For those of you who have asked, or have just wondered, I'm not dead. I've just been busy getting our pigs settled in, finishing up farmers market/bakery stuff for the year, and doing a lot of end-of-the-dry-season farm chores. Once things get too wet outside to do more than our daily essential work I'll probably be more active on here again.
I need more of my attention focused on those and it's too easy to get sucked into my dash here. It's been easier for me to stay on task if I just toss a pic or clip up on our Instagram while taking a work break, though, so in the meantime I'll probably just keep doing that. If you're curious about what we're up to it's here. (link)

There are only so many essential farm tasks that I can do while letting our poultry flock enjoy their daily outdoor time, so I'm teaching myself wood carving. My experience with decorative sheet metal work and with shaping/trimming filler compounds leads me to believe that smooth curves and relief cutting are probably going to be the challenges so I'm practicing those first.
The ducks don't care about it in the least. The chickens were especially fascinated by it, especially The Vern and Shirley. I suspect it's because I'm the one that gives them all their daily scratch grains and mealworms. They saw the little wood chips falling around "the snack throwing ape" and hope drove them from there.

My internet situation is even less reliable than before. If you're waiting on a response from me I apologize. We moved this weekend and I have to be this far from the house (out here in the bee yard) to get good enough phone service to connect. The best internet connection we'll be able to get will still depend on weather conditions. We might work on improving that, but it may be a while.

Our internet connection and phone service are improved inside the house, but still not entirely reliable. The company we go through bought out another and they’re giving out the latter’s old equipment (both previously used and unused) until they use all of it up so our modem/router is giving us trouble. We still don’t get either service very well outside of the house but I spent the first 20-ish years of my life saying “Sorry I missed your call. I was outside” so I’m sure I’ll adapt to that quickly enough. It’s kind of nice living without being constantly tethered to the rest of the world that way, to be honest.
I’ll try getting to my inbox soon, but I have to ask for a bit more patience in the meantime. We spotted some black bear scat in the garden site yesterday so I’ve got to finish getting our bee yard secure from them, including having to see if I can splice the fence energizer into the barn’s existing wiring without setting the entire county on fire.
We’re still unpacking here, too, and also still getting our old place ready to sell. Hopefully we’ll break even on it but I’m willing to take a little bit of a loss if it gets it out of my hair sooner. We’re probably going to just sell it to professional buyers. We got suckered in the sale and it needs the kind of work that they can afford to do. My conscience wouldn’t let me drop that kind of additional expense on some other couple or family.
I promise I’ll get to my inbox as soon as I can, even though I’m sure the pattern will hold true and it’ll mostly be the most boring anons ever just saying all the same things reactionary turds love to leave there for me. I know you diamonds are there in the dunghill, too, but digging you out might take some time.

I really hope that we finally get some spring weather here before it's too late to plant our gardens and field.

While going out to get fresh bedding for the coop I paused on the front porch to get a little high first. My partner took the opportunity to snap a pic of me. The entire time I was a grunt I was never allowed to wear my boonie hats "Nam style" so now I do so with my rain hat from time to time.

If all you need it for is scratch grains, grit, oyster shell, and mealworms why spend good money on an LBE when you've got a couple of spare dump pouches and two gym bag shoulder straps?

I roasted some broccoli from our garden to go with tonight's rice. I found plenty of worms for our two ducks who actually like eating them while doing prep, so 4 of us got a meal out of it. For some reason only Wesley and Dove will eat them, but they race each other frantically to snatch them off our hands. The eleven other ducks (the Family and the Debbies) won't even give them a second look but the Republicans just love eating the worms we find on our brassicas.

I got tired of being retired so now I’m a farmer. We only sell duck and chicken eggs, produce, and plant starts for now, but we’ve got beehives ready for occupancy. Once we have a little more land available we’re going to add a few dairy goats just for ourselves and see if that’s something we’ll want to expand on. Maybe we’ll hire out the herd for brush removal/control as the kids come if we do.
I set up a side blog for it a little while back if you’re interested. honeyfeatherfarm.tumblr.com/
