Kenwood TH-D74 and Linux (w bluetooth) packet radio

This article describes how to use Kenwood TH-D74 handheld with Linux PC to run packet radio (ax.25), D-Star data mode etc.

To run packet radio with this handheld you need to do three things: 1. Connect the handheld to the PC (which is simple using usb cable, bud hard to do using bluetooth) 2. Set the appropriate USB or Bluetooth io in the handy's menu 3. Run TNC emulator (or connect virtual bluetooth/usb serial port to the linux kernel)

The first step looks simple. Simply pair the radio with your PC using bluetooth utilities and...you will see that something goes terribly wrong. Device is not paired, you are unable to see any virtual serial ports. But if you know something about rfcomm (virtual bluetooth serial port - I hope your kernel is compiled with bluetooth and rfcomm turned on).

Then you need obtain BDADDRESS of your handy. There are two ways to do that. Put your handheld into pairing mode (<MENU>934<ENT>), then

hciconfig hci0 piscan sdptool add SP hcitool scan

and you will see your handy's BD address, or simply use <MENU>935 and you will see your BD address on the display of your handy (and you cannot use copy&paste :3 :3)

And. When you have your BD address type

rfcomm connect /dev/rfcomm0 <your BD address> 2

e.g. rfcomm connect /dev/rfcomm0 24:71:89:84:D4:CF 2

If everything goes ok, then you will see, that /dev/rfcomm0 is connected to your handheld and the bluetooth icon on your handheld will turn from grey to blue and creating connection is reported. You can test it now, but better close it using CTRL+C. There is better (nonblocking) way to do the same:

rfcomm bind /dev/rfcomm0 <your BD address> 2

which will bind the rfcomm0 device to your handheld, but does not create connection. The connection is created in the moment you open /dev/rfcomm0.

BTW you can unbind device using rfcomm release /dev/rfcomm0

The second step is setting up your handheld. This is done using <MENU>98. Simply assign KISS connection to Bluetooth. (you can do the same for the DV data etc.)

The third and final step is to install virtual TNC or connect your "kiss tnc" at /dev/rfcomm0 to your ax25 kernel, jnos, whatever. Using ax.25 kernel is complex thing and is well documented in the ax25howto, same situation with jnos, but I hope all you need is to connect to your local node or bbs. And the most simple way to do that is using TNT (WA8DED hostmode terminal software) with TFKISS TheFirmware TNC2 software emulator. Simply edit the configuration file located in <prefix>/share/tfkiss/conf/tfkiss.ini and modify following lines to look like:

device /dev/rfcomm0 tfkiss_lockfile /var/lock/LCK..rfcomm0 kisstype 0 kiss_active 1

The kisstype is important. Default value is 1, which means SMACK, but your handy have only KISS TNC!!

Then put your handy into KISS mode (<F><5><F><5>, you should see KISS12 od KISS96 on your display), run tfkiss -t and try your first ax.25 contact with TH-D74.

Then you should configure TNT, which has self-explaining configuration script (I recomend you to use it) and...that's all. It is good idea to write some script to bind/release rfcomm0 to your radio, and to run TNT with tfkiss.
