sneepy cozy time....
#cats#longing to one day hopefully feel sleepy cozy like this again...#There was a pretty cool week here so I thought we had progressed closer to cool fall weather but... NO#..wrong!! It's like 80F in my room right now and was 98F outside yesterday. We get two more 'cooler' days and then#it starts going up again and will be in the high 90s possibly 100 something later this week#in my mind september should be COOOOOLLLL!!!!! or at least STARTING to get there.. Like mid 80s at the highest.#I am going to explode the world with evil wizard powers aaRGHaaHHHHHHHH#OR at least it should get down really low at night. I think thats the main thing is if it's 95 in the day and only 62 for like 3 hours in#the middle of the night then even leaving a fan in windows all night is not enough to fully cool down the house because its just not#enough cold air or cool for long enough. If it were 98 in the day but 15F outside at night then you could probably bring cool air inside al#night and your house would be at a relatively low starting point for the next days heat.#Like for example - in my apartment on a hot and sunny day. Even with every window#closed and blocked off with thick layers of reflective stuff and also not using the stove or doing anything to generate heat - the apartmen#will still go up on average about 6 - 8 degrees in one day. Peaking around 8 - 10pm night time. If I start off with the house cooled down#to 60F. then the highest it would get is 66 - 68 which is tolerable#.But if the lowest I can cool the apartment all night is still only 75F#then it's going to be 81 - 83F by the end of the day. So really it would be bearable (ISH)#for it to be warm as long as it was colder at night.#Though still the IDEAL is to not have to structure my life around envrionmental management and constantly be checking the#outdoor temperature so I can put the fans in the second that it's colder outside than it is inside and putting elaborate curtain systems#up and down at the exact right times and meal prepping 4 days in advance so I dont have to use the stove for 3 days and blah blah blah#Life in the colder weather months is so effortless and breezy in that sense. I can just have the window open all day and get natural light.#I can cook whatever I want. I can wear what I like. I can move around the house freely without needing to always#carry a fan around with me or douse myself in water.#ANYWAY.... oh if only that were me.... snuggled in a warm blanket ... a comforting wintery image...

went into work at 5am to deep clean the salad bar. not my favorite thing but it needs doing and it's only once every few months. Three hours later I'm finished and pulling out the lettuce to start my job proper--STOP says the manager there is no hot water and policy is that if there's no hot water to wash our hands with our hands are not considered clean enough to handle food. All production is shut down until further notice.
but they are, however, clean enough to clean things
and so. for eight hours today. I cleaned things. Salad bar. Shelves. Tables. Walls. Whatever. I got none of my actual work done. Five minutes before it was time for me to leave? THE HOT WATER WAS BACK ON D:<

Trying to figure out how to digitize sketches ft. Doodles of Victor Freeze. I was thinking about how weird it is that “rule of cool” means he usually gets a much wider range of acceptable temperatures than an actual human. I don’t know, I find the idea of him having a human range but slightly lower is charming.

I am this 🤏 close to giving up medicine and my dream to practice neurology, just so I can go into IT, get a remote job and move somewhere in the mountains where a 4 bedroom house with a big ass yard costs just about as much as a one bedroom apartment in the city I currently live in. Fuck it. Give me 5 dogs, clean air and no fucking traffic. No neighbours?? Fuck it, I want it NOW 😠

every so often im struck by the memory of one of my college professors getting very angry with our class (art history of pompeii 250) because when she excitedly detailed the ingenious roman invention of heated floors in bathhouses via hearths in small crawlspaces, we asked who was tending the fires. she said "oh, slaves i suppose. but that isnt the point". and we said that it actually very much was the point. she had just told us that in roman society there were dozens of people, maybe hundreds, who spent every day of their enslaved lives crawling in cramped, hot, smoky tunnels to light fires to warm pools of water (which they were not allowed to swim in). how could that not be the point?
she wanted us to focus on the art, on the innovation of heated plumbing, on the tiles and decorations of the bathhouses, and all we wanted to do was learn more about the people under the floors. and she didn't know anything more about that. in fact, she said she thought we were focusing too much on superfluous details.
it feels almost hokey to put too fine a point on the idea im getting at here but i will anyway: There are a lot of people who are still under the floors. all these beautiful, convenient, brilliant innovations of modern society (think fast fashion, chatgpt, uber, doordash) are still powered by people working in inhumane, untenable conditions.
the people who run these systems want you to focus on the good - who doesnt love warm water? - but if anything is going to improve or change in our lifetimes, you need to examine these things with an attentive, critical, and empathetic eye. and for fucks sake stop ordering from amazon

Estimating the Cost and Energy Efficiency of Solar Water Heaters
Solar water heaters present an effective and eco-friendly way to reduce energy bills and carbon footprints. By harnessing the sun's energy, these systems offer substantial savings and enhanced energy efficiency. In this comprehensive guide, we explore the intricacies of estimating the cost and energy efficiency of solar water heaters.
Estimating the cost and energy efficiency of solar water heaters involves several factors, including the amount of hot water used, system performance, geographic location, available financing and incentives, and the cost of conventional fuels. Here are some key points to consider:
Cost Estimates:
The cost of solar water heaters varies by collector type and system configuration, ranging from $50 to $424 per square foot (sf) or $1000 per square meter (m2.
A typical household-sized solar water heater system might cost around $4,000, with a simple payback period of 15.3 years compared to natural gas and 14.5 years compared to electricity.
Energy Efficiency:
Solar water heaters are more efficient than traditional water heaters, with solar energy factors (SEF) ranging from 1.0 to 11. Systems with SEF of 2 or 3 are common.
The solar fraction (SF) measures the portion of the total conventional hot water heating load that is covered by solar energy, typically ranging from 0.5 to 0.75.
Annual Operating Costs:
To estimate annual operating costs, you need to know the system's SEF and the cost of the auxiliary tank fuel (gas or electric).
For example, with a gas auxiliary tank system and an SEF of 1.1, the estimated annual operating cost would be $149.83.
Comparing Costs and Determining Payback:
Compare the costs of solar water heaters with those of conventional systems to determine the payback period.
The payback period is the time it takes for the solar system to break even by saving money on fuel bills.
System Selection:
When selecting a solar water heater, consider factors such as system size, cost, and performance metrics like SEF and SF.
Evaluate your site's solar resource and local codes, covenants, and regulations before installation.
Maintenance:
Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the system runs smoothly. For active systems, maintenance requirements include replacing parts after 10 years.

Understanding Solar Water Heating Systems
Solar water heating systems use solar collectors to absorb sunlight and convert it into heat. This heat is then transferred to a storage tank, providing hot water for residential or commercial use. There are two main types of solar water heating systems:
Active Systems: These use pumps and controls to circulate water or a heat-transfer fluid through the solar collectors.
Passive Systems: These rely on natural convection or gravity to move water through the system.
Key Components and Their Costs
Solar Collectors
Solar collectors are the heart of the solar water heating system. There are two primary types:
Flat-Plate Collectors: These are the most common and consist of a flat, insulated box with a transparent cover and a dark-colored absorber plate.
Evacuated Tube Collectors: These consist of rows of parallel glass tubes, each containing an absorber tube that captures sunlight more efficiently than flat-plate collectors.
Estimated Costs:
Flat-Plate Collectors: $2,000 - $4,000
Evacuated Tube Collectors: $4,000 - $8,000
Storage Tanks
Storage tanks are essential for holding the heated water. Depending on the system type, these tanks can vary in size and insulation quality.
Estimated Costs:
Standard Tanks: $1,000 - $2,500
High-Efficiency Tanks: $2,500 - $4,000
Heat Transfer Fluid
In active systems, a heat transfer fluid is used to convey heat from the collectors to the storage tank. This fluid can be water or a non-freezing liquid.
Estimated Costs:
Initial Cost: $100 - $300
Annual Maintenance: $50 - $150
Pump and Controller
Active systems require a pump and a controller to manage the flow of the heat transfer fluid.
Estimated Costs:
Pump: $500 - $1,000
Controller: $300 - $800
Installation Costs
Professional installation is crucial for ensuring the efficiency and longevity of the system. Installation costs can vary based on system complexity and local labor rates.
Estimated Costs:
Basic Installation: $2,000 - $4,000
Complex Installation: $4,000 - $8,000
Total Cost Estimate
The total cost of a solar water heating system can vary widely depending on the specific components and installation requirements. On average, homeowners can expect to spend between $7,000 and $15,000.
Energy Efficiency and Savings
Energy Savings
Solar water heaters can significantly reduce energy consumption for water heating, which typically accounts for 14-18% of a household's energy use. Depending on the system and local solar resources, solar water heaters can provide 50-80% of the hot water needs.
Environmental Benefits
By using solar energy, solar water heaters reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. A typical solar water heater can prevent over 1,000 pounds of CO2 emissions annually.
Payback Period
The payback period for a solar water heater depends on various factors, including local energy costs, system efficiency, and available incentives. Generally, the payback period ranges from 5 to 10 years.
Incentives and Rebates
Several federal, state, and local incentives can significantly reduce the initial cost of a solar water heating system. These include tax credits, rebates, and grants. Homeowners should explore available incentives to maximize their savings.
