the way Hotch interacted with Madam Bouvier is literally all the evidence i need for him being queer like

ok ok theres been so much talk about hotch and his relationship with his dad/his relationship to fatherhood itself and like, this is so silly but i thought about the scene where he borrows the halloween costume from madame bouvier and she says he deserves a break and that “the world could use more good fathers” and its said with SO much intent like. i have to wonder what something like that makes hotch feel, when someone who doesnt know him or his story looks at him and right away sees a good man a good father, someone who is TRYING, when im sure hotch never felt any of that when looking at his own father!!!

god im so torn between making hotch emo boy baby forever or having actually accept that he is a good father

part of me thinks that he never thinks he's good enough. he strives for perfection and when he inevitably fails to attain it, he uses that as proof that he's inadequate. he constantly pushes himself, working himself to the bone at his job and not letting himself relax when he's home because he has to be there 100% for jack. when something goes wrong, he always blames himself. and in their line of work, that's a dangerous line of thought. the consequences are so much steeper and if he really thinks something is his fault (via negligence, insufficiency, etc) then the weight of that guilt just adds to the pressure he puts on himself

but there's another part of me that thinks he may be a little more logical than i give him credit for about this. he doesn't think he's a great father by any means (he's gone far too long for that), but he's seen enough bad fathers by now, through his job and personal experience, to know that he's not the worst. but even then, he can only believe that because of how much effort he puts into being a good father. when he's home, he tries his hardest to be the best father he can be: supportive, kind, caring, understanding. every action is carefully calculated. and i think he's done a good enough job that he could allow himself to be somewhat content.

it's a hard thing for him to admit because i do think he spent so long thinking he wasn't good enough. but he's seen enough and matured enough to recognize that maybe he should get his head out of his ass a little and give himself a little credit.

so back to your actual fucking question: how does he react to madam b's comment? early seasons hotch wouldve disregarded it and not thought much about it at all. clearly she's mistaken or just being kind or whatever other excuse he uses to justify ignoring the compliment. but later seasons hotch? its still difficult but i think he really tries to accept it. allows himself to be a little proud. jack's turned out fine so far. jack still loves him. maybe he can try to let himself to be... content
