Data Dashboards Everywhere!

These days, nearly every business technology platform offers some type of performance report or dashboard capability. We now expect one-click access to data from tools we use for email campaigns, social media and web content management. And we expect no less from more sophisticated systems that drive marketing automation and customer relationship management.

Although these dashboards offer easy access to information, it’s important to remember their limits. For example, charts typically reflect only the data collected with each platform. But our goals are usually more expansive. We want to understand how marketing activities work together to impact business outcomes such as category ownership or comparative growth rates.

Does Your Dashboard Separate Signal From Noise?

The most effective dashboards focus on highly relevant information that demonstrates business impact and facilitates strategic decision-making. This requires us to gather and integrate data from multiple sources.

Sounds straightforward enough. But the trick in building and leveraging this type of dashboard is the ability to identify the most meaningful data and make sense of it. And that depends on how well you separate the signal from the noise.

This signal-to-noise (SNR) concept is a ratio used in science and engineering to measure the strength of a relevant signal to irrelevant background noise. When SNR is low, the signal (in this case, salient performance information) gets lost in the noise (all the background data). Conversely, as SNR increases, the signal becomes more clear.

Why Does Signal-to-Noise Ratio Matter?

Because I’ve spent a great deal of my career among engineers, I learned the importance of separating relevant versus irrelevant data. And when we apply this signal-to-noise ratio idea to marketing dashboards, they become more useful.

Think of it this way: When your dashboard is overloaded with data, your ability to find and focus on meaningful insights can be obscured by random superfluous or irrelevant information. Learning how to distinguish important data can help you measure performance more effectively and help your organization make actionable decisions with greater confidence.

Before we explore how to construct a meaningful marketing dashboard, let’s explore how to increase your SNR ratio.

Why Quality Data Leads to Terrific Dashboards

Too much data is one of the primary culprits of noise. But simply reducing the total volume of underlying data doesn’t necessarily produce a higher-quality dashboard.

No matter how much data you process, you need to make sure you have the right data.

This is why it is important to remember that any dashboard – for marketing or any other function – must answer the proverbial question, “So what?”

If it doesn’t facilitate an action or a decision, what is its purpose?

An Everyday Example: Your Car

Think about the dashboard of your car. Those visual analytics are based on a lot of data, but each widget is a key performance indicator (KPI) that serves a specific, important purpose:

The speedometer helps you decide if you’re driving within the legal limit.

The fuel gauge helps you decide if you have enough fuel to reach your destination.

The average-miles-per-gallon tracker helps you decide if your car is operating as efficiently as you’d like.

An effective marketing dashboard plays a similar role. It should include indicators that help decision-makers address key performance questions. For example:

Which business processes are affected by marketing, and to what degree?

Are you meeting specific performance targets?

What is or isn’t working? What tactical adjustments are recommended (if any)?

What strategic decisions should be made regarding customers, products and competitors?

Where risks are emerging, and what’s the severity of those risks?

This is the first step in creating a high signal-to-noise dashboard. Determine the decisions and actions that matter most to your business. Then select ONLY relevant dashboard indicators.

How to Improve Dashboard Data

We’re bombarded with so many real-time dashboard metrics, it’s easy to be sucked-in by the sheer volume and flow of dynamic activity data. Perhaps that’s why professionals spend a tremendous amount of time and energy monitoring website traffic and social media activity as it occurs.

However, real-time dashboards can be harmful because they tend to increase the overall noise level, and cause knee-jerk reactions to data that hasn’t been contextualized. To minimize these issues, try these techniques:

1) Expand Time Intervals

Tracking and reporting time series data over longer periods (months instead of days, for example) can help you avoid short-term noise dynamics, so you can identify the most salient data patterns.

This can also help you identify acceptable measurement parameters and define appropriate “exception alert” thresholds – the same way your car dashboard is designed to alert you when fuel dips below a specific level.

2) Smooth Your Data

Data smoothing is particularly important. This makes it easier to identify core patterns, so you can begin to isolate issues and analyze underlying drivers.

A variety of sophisticated statistical techniques can help you with data smoothing. However, simply calculating a moving average over multiple equivalent intervals is fairly easy and usually reasonably effective.

For example, it may be helpful to track growth in customers and purchase volume with a one-year monthly trailing moving average. This kind of time series analysis provides more meaningful information than actual monthly values, especially when activity is characterized by frequent peaks and valleys that reflect seasonal fluctuations or other factors.

Averaging data over time also helps reduce noise when your data involves win/loss ratios, net new opportunities and other pipeline metrics that can change dramatically from week-to-week or month-to-month.

3) Combine Indicators

Another way to reduce noise is by combining multiple indicators. This can be effective even when measures represent somewhat different concepts. For instance, you may want to combine measures of actual spend with cost-per-unit (such as cost-per-lead, cost-per-acquisition, cost-to-serve and so forth).

Because these indicators are conceptually different, they will track differently, even if they’re measured perfectly. But by combining them, you can build a more complete picture of the fundamental “value for money” trend.

In addition, combining different measures of the same concept can help improve the accuracy of your estimate.

I Finished the Entire freeCodeCamp Curriculum in 1 Month (and Recorded Everything)

One month ago I embarked on a challenge that many people told me was insane. I set out to conquer the entire freeCodeCamp curriculum. All while live streaming everything on my YouTube channel.

29 days, 56 Live Streams and 72 hours of live streams later... I did it! 🤩

First a Disclaimer

I'm a professional software engineer. I've been coding since 2013. And I had previous experience working with all of the technologies covered in freeCodeCamp's curriculum.

So this was way easier for me than it would be for most people. Most people spend years earning these certifications.

Remember: It's not about how much time it takes you to complete freeCodeCamp's curriculum – it's about what you are learning along the way.

I created this series as a guide for anyone who gets stuck during the curriculum, and wants to watch how a relatively experienced software engineer would solve challenges and build projects.

How did this crazy month of my life get started?

I've been planning to do this challenge for a while now. But it always seemed to be a HUGE one, which would take a lot of time to complete.

Apparently it didn't take months, as I initially thought. (And I'll tell you why in a moment.)

Before I started this challenge I ran this idea by freeCodeCamp founder Quincy Larson to see whether he thought that this was something that could benefit the developer community. He was very encouraging.

freeCodeCamp has a "learn in public" culture, and a lot of people post their projects on the forum and on GitHub for feedback. And an increasing number of people live-stream themselves building these projects, too.

Quincy said not to worry about "spoiling" any of the challenges or projects. These are all the equivalent of "open notes tests." Students must write their own code, but they can look at other people's solutions for inspiration if they want.

Why Did I Choose freeCodeCamp's Certifications for This Challenge?

I have always recommended freeCodeCamp's curriculum to people who want to start learning web development.

Why? Well, the answer is very simple: it's the best free resource to get up and running with web development, in my opinion.

Now, even though it's a very good resource, people tend to quit along the way because they start to hit different roadblocks... and that's sad. 😔

We want more people to finish the curriculum!

And here is where the Conquering freeCodeCamp's Curriculum challenge starts to shine. It gives everyone a follow-along playlist of videos in which I personally go through the entire curriculum, explaining what I'm thinking with each step I take. I also added my own comments and "bonus" explanations.

Every section on freeCodeCamp is covered in a single video. There are a total of 56 videos. (See below a list of all)

My background and experience

I started to learn how to code in 2013. Since then I've been a freelancer, I had multiple jobs and last year I started to write articles on my blog and started to create YouTube coding tutorials (feel free to subscribe if you like these type of videos - shameless plug 😄).

It is safe to say that I already knew most part of what is to learn on the platform, which gave me an advantage on conquering the curriculum in a month, BUT, don't let this intimidate you...

No matter your experience, no matter if it takes you 2-3-6 months or 1 year to complete the curriculum, just do it. I promise that you won't regret doing it.

I also worked A LOT to put out these Live Streams. Some days I even recorded more than 5 hours and I had a day in which I did 8 Live Streams completing one entire certification in that day... 😅

Why did I do that?

Well... most people would say that I'm either crazy or either a robot.

I'm not a robot, but maybe a bit crazy... yes. 😂

The reason why I pushed so hard was because I had plans to go in a vacation and I wanted to have this all out before going. (Well... the vacation got canceled, but I'm still happy that I had this done.)

And also, to be honest, my craziness to do challenges fast also played a role in this. For some reason I wanted to finish this in a month, but don't ask me why because I don't really know 😅.

Probably because I thought that this would be a new world record or something, although I haven't checked for that so... I don't really know if it is or not. Quincy should tell me, haha.

Conquering freeCodeCamp - All the Recordings

Keep in mind that all of these were recorded in a series of Live Streams, so you might hear me talk with the chat, I will take some breaks sometimes to analyse and even struggle to find some solutions 😅 - which is perfectly fine!

I did Live Streams instead of "planned recordings" because I wanted it to be as close to real life as possible. This is probably what you'll have to deal with too, so I think it's of a greater value this way than it would have been to just show you the solutions.

Also note that it's perfectly fine to take a break once you are stuck in a challenge. Just leave it for a couple of hours, even a day, and you'll see a great progress when you come back later to the challenge.

The First 90 Days Have Given Me Confidence That I Can Do This—and More!

It’s Monday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here. When did I first see it? It was in November 2017. I stepped on my scale and proceeded to log my information into my fitness tracker and there it was staring back at me. The tracker already knows my age and height and it spit out a calculation that never really caught my attention before. Under the heading for BMI (Body Mass Index) the word Overweight was highlighted with a color meant to get my attention. It did.

I’ve never had what you would call a weight problem. In fact at first glance most people would call me tall (at 6’2″) and skinny. But with a BMI at 25.8% I now was in the “overweight” bucket. I realize that a BMI calculation that is done this way doesn’t factor in a lot of things and someone that is muscular will have a higher BMI and that shouldn’t be a good indicator of a healthy weight. But that’s not me, I don’t have a muscular build so that excuse doesn’t hold water. The fact was that I let my weight and body fat creep up, I had let myself go. Most importantly, when I looked at my naked self in the mirror I wasn’t happy with what was there and wanted to change.

Now I had already loosely followed Mark’s Daily Apple and was very well aware of the new Keto Reset Diet book that had recently been released and caught my attention. So I made a quick decision to order the book and get ready to start my reset experiment before the big holiday season. My goal was to begin November 1 2017 and go through until at least the new year. Most importantly tracking my body fat percentage and along with it my weight of course.

I did just that, and here are my results. (These body fat and weight details are from my home scale so they are not exact figures, but they show my steady and consistent downward track overall.) These results DID NOT include a new workout routine. In fact I did no exercise program at all for the first 45 days then started to add in 20-40 minute fast walks 3-4 days a week in mid December which I continue to this day.

Started 11/1/2017 – 24.2% fat / Weight 201.2 lbs / 25.8 BMI

12/1/2017 – 19.0% fat / Weight 183.6 lbs / 23.6 BMI (Month totals -5.2% fat / -17.6 lbs)

1/1/2018 – 19.6% fat / Weight 177.4 lbs / 22.8 BMI (Month totals +0.6% fat / -6.2 lbs)

2/1/2018 – 16.5% fat / Weight 170.6 lbs / 21.9 BMI (Month totals -3.1% fat / -6.8 lbs)

In those 3 months I reduced my body fat by 7.7%. My weight reduced by 30.6 lbs. And my BMI now set comfortably in the “normal” category going from 25.8 down to 21.9.

Was it easy? Yes and No.

The plan itself was easy and I had no problem with the transition and knowing what I should and shouldn’t be doing to get the results I wanted.

The hard part was keeping myself on track during those holiday gatherings filled with sugary treats and that bachelor party weekend of booze and more treats. Was I perfect? Far from it! But I made a lot of good choices too. When I did allow myself to “cheat” I did it in moderation. For example, I did have a piece of my mom’s pecan pie on Thanksgiving, but it was a small piece and I passed on the ice cream. During the bachelor party weekend I drank more alcohol than I should have (go figure) but I tried to stay away from the beer and kept it at straight liquor and some wine.

I continue on this journey with a desire to keep reducing my body fat percentage. The first 90 days of success have given me confidence that I can do this and more. I am now going to add in some resistance training and see what kind of muscle I can add to this 48-year-old body. Something I’ve never been able to achieve in my life. The Keto Reset Diet book gave me the tools to take better control of my body and overall health.

As of the writing of this, Valentine’s Day 2018, I am at 16.1% fat, weight 169.8 lbs with a 21.8 BMI.

I also have additional health benefit that should be more than a side note here. I ordered a lipid test when I completed my first 90 days just to see how this new routine may have affected my overall health. My triglycerides as of 2/2/18 were at 64 with a HDL/Tri ratio of 1.08. The most recent test before that was 10/18/2014 and I was at 168 for my triglycerides and my HDL/Tri ratio was 3.7. What a huge improvement, a drop of 104 for my triglycerides! I wish I had a closer baseline test, but I know very little changed for me in my diet and actively since that previous test, if anything it got worse. I doubt my numbers were any better when I started this just over 3 months ago but I’m very happy with where I am now.

Sauerkraut Benefits (with an Easy Homemade Sauerkraut Recipe)

Although fermented cabbage has been around in some form or another since ancient times – Roman author Pliny the Elder wrote of the stuff in the first century A.D. – modern methods for making sauerkraut were developed sometime between the 16th and 18th centuries. It’s primarily known as a German staple, but most other European countries use it in their traditional dishes. It’s pretty easy to understand why it was so popular: it keeps for a long time without refrigeration. Dutch, German, and English sailors found that the vitamin C-rich kraut prevented scurvy on the open seas, and the fact that it was salted and fermented made it ideal for long voyages without other preservation methods.

As the name would suggest, sauerkraut is quite literally sour cabbage. The sour flavor comes from the process of lacto-fermentation, similar to the pickling of cucumbers. But instead of soaking the cabbage in a vinegary brine solution, sauerkraut preparation requires only salt and the lactic acid bacteria already present on raw cabbage.

Is sauerkraut good for you?

You may have heard before that sauerkraut, or fermented foods in general, have a number of health benefits and you should eat more of them. Here’s what we know.

Health Benefits of Sauerkraut

More than just a delicious, tangy flavor, the beauty of sauerkraut also lies in its considerable health benefits:

Rich in vitamin C

Contains lactobacilli, a class of friendly bacteria that may aid digestion and immunity

Isothiocyanates, compounds shown to prevent cancer growth1

Manganese, vitamin B6, folate, and fiber from the cabbage itself

But most of us get our kraut at the grocery store. Going that route means you’re probably losing all the good stuff through pasteurization which involves heating to high temperatures. There are refrigerated brands that have not been pasteurized, but I personally like to control the process and ingredients to get the quality I want.

So, why not make your own? It’s incredibly easy. All it takes is some cabbage, some other vegetables if you’d like to include them (carrots, different colored cabbage, garlic, onions, beets, even apples), a storage vessel, a bit of sea salt, and patience. If you can chop and sprinkle salt, you can ferment your own homemade sauerkraut.

Is Sauerkraut Keto?

Coming in at 3g of carbs per 1/2 cup serving, sauerkraut is a keto food. Eat it on its own, or use it to add zing to other foods like soups and stews, pork chops, burgers, and more.

How to Make Homemade Sauerkraut: the Recipe

Servings: 16

Time in the kitchen: 15 minutes

Ingredients

1 head organic green cabbage

1-2 organic carrots (optional)

5-8 organic cloves of garlic, chopped (optional)

2 Tbsp. fine sea salt

Equipment

Cutting board

Knife

Fermentation jar: ceramic fermentation crock or a large wide-mouth mason jar (no plastic or metal)

Smaller mason jar to use as a weight

Mixing bowl

Wooden spoon

Before You Start, Sanitize Everything

Even if your cutting board, knife, mixing bowl, wooden spoon, and mason jars are clean, clean them again with soap and hot water. The fermentation process encourages microbes to breed, and you want to grow the ones you want, and not the ones you don’t. Allow your equipment to cool before starting.

Making Sauerkraut at Home

Begin by chopping your cabbage. I used green, but you can throw in some red cabbage to make the batch pink. You can include the heart, as the fermentation process will soften it. Tip: shred your cabbage as finely as you can. We’re going for is high surface area, because more surface area means more fermentation and exposure to the juices. Dump it into the mixing bowl and add salt as you go.

I like to include carrots and garlic here, but it’s not required. I like intense flavors, so I’m going to peel and grate the carrots and dice the garlic to get the most out of both vegetables. Drop these into the bowl and sprinkle in the salt as well.

Mix the ingredients together in the mixing bowl. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, and allow the salt to draw out the juices. You want to stimulate the natural juices of the vegetables, because they’re going to be your brine. You can help the process along by smashing the cabbage with the wooden spoon.

Start packing your mix into your fermentation jar. Just make sure you can cover whatever vessel you use. Pack it down hard, going slowly to make sure each addition is completely compressed in the jar. This will extract water and ensure the fermentation process goes smoothly.

Continue to press the mixture down with the wooden spoon until all of the cabbage is under the brine. Fit the smaller mason jar into the larger one to keep all of the vegetable submerged. Cover the whole thing loosely with a cloth or towel to keep bugs out.

For the next day or so, press down on the top several times a day to make sure the mix is submerged in brine. If it seems dry, you might have old cabbage. That’s fine. Just add a bit of water to cover everything, along with 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

Check your kraut every day. The volume will reduce as fermentation begins, and that’s exactly what you want.

That’s basically it. So really, it’s all about waiting. The actual preparation takes just a few minutes.

How Much Salt Should You Use?

To achieve a finished product with the perfect balance of tangy and salty, aim for a 2% brine.

For the most accurate calculation of how much salt to use, you’ll need a food scale. Set it to grams, and weigh your cabbage. For every 100 grams of cabbage, you’ll need 2 grams of salt.

You don’t have to have a food scale to make sauerkraut – the ingredients list above will come pretty close to the correct concentration.

How to Know When Your Sauerkraut is Ready

Start tasting your kraut after the third day. It should be tangy by now, and you can begin to gauge just how pungent you want it. The taste will get stronger as time increases. Every time you eat some, make sure you pack the rest of it in just like before: tightly packed, submerged, and with a weight pressing down.

How to Store Sauerkraut

Though sauerkraut is usually ready to eat in 3-7 days, if it’s cool enough, sauerkraut can improve for months. If you live in warmer climates, you might want to move your kraut into the fridge after a few weeks. If you store it, remember, it’s alive. Cover it with a loose lid or a banded cloth. Your ferment could release enough gas to pop the top and leave you with a mess.

How to Make Sauerkraut in a Crock

Making sauerkraut in a crock is exactly the same as making sauerkraut in a mason jar. Using the same methods, pour your mixing bowl of salted vegetables into your fermentation crock. Put the weights on top, add the lid, and your kraut should be ready in a few days.

Mold vs. Kahm Yeast

In most cases, your sauerkraut is totally protected by the brine, but things can go wrong. Mold should be discarded, but kahm yeast won’t ruin your ferment. Here’s how to tell the difference:

Mold. If you see fuzz, dark circles, colors, a raised texture, a funky smell, or any other indications of mold on the top, toss the whole batch and start over. It happens to the best of us.

Kahm yeast. Kahm yeast is white or slightly off-white, and looks almost like a thin layer of plastic wrap is sitting on top of your ferment. There can be bubbles, or it may have a stringy appearance. You can skim it off if you wish.

Cabbage is cheap, so even if yours goes moldy, you only lose a few dollars. Don’t let fermentation intimidate you. Once you try it, you’ll be hooked, and you’ll probably start experimenting with lacto-fermenting other vegetables. Have fun with it.
