ZY - This guy ranks pretty high on the technology smarts. I believe he would make his own computers and I know he programs his own little robots. How well they work is another question, but that’s still saying a lot.

Dano - He's literally a little computer nerd. I hc that he also acted as an IT guy at his job, pre-riddling. He needs that kind of knowledge to hack into and sift through emails detailing dirty dealings.

YJ - He thinks he's such a tech guy, but in reality, he thinks resetting his password is a great example of his skill. Don't get me wrong, he is tech savvy, but if you asked him to build a computer, he'd look at you like a lost puppy.

Gotham - Not a computer guy. He knows bodies, not technology. Of everyone in the house, I'd say he's the most incapable. So, how do I create a...folder?

BTAA - Hack master. Girl, you don't know about his skills. Rivals Dano in his ability to hack into places he's not supposed to be. Loves to know everyone's dirty secrets for no good reason.

Arkham - So, we know he's good with heavy machinery, but he also shows himself to be pretty good at jamming signals. He didn't become the GCPD's data guy for nothing. Also likes to dig up secrets for no reason.

BTAS - Less malicious hacking for this guy and more creation. He loves putting pieces together and having them work in harmony to make something work, especially coding for a game. Honestly, his favorite part is when people get the chance to put his creation to the test.

Telltale - Okay, he could be good with computers. However, as funny as it might be, he was born a little too early to get a natural affinity for computers. If he put his mind to it, he could be just as good as any of them, but, honestly? He likes building the little puzzles and things. That's what does it for him.

6/26/23 Cold War: Part 2

Background

A couple months ago, I entered another cold war (perhaps inappropriately named) with mama. This post attempts to document the context, e.g. my justification, for posteriority; I find that I'm not actually able to remember quite why the first one occurred years ago. I only remember the arguing loudly with her and strong feelings of frustration in Portland, after an already infuriating conversation with my dad.

What Happened

My mom cracked her phone a few months ago in early April 2023. She ended up going to the Apple store to get it repaired on April 7. She called me twice around 12:12 pm because the Apple employee needs access to the iPhone/her Apple ID account. However, I don't pick up because I'm napping.

I call her back when I do see the two missed called at 1:20 pm. However, this call goes straight to voicemail. I text her "Sorry I had a meeting" to excuse my missed calls. But I'm not too worried about her situation. I received emails that her Apple ID password is reset, so I surmise that the employee was able to resolve the issue and that the phone is likely under repair at the moment. I also received an email containing information about the repair appointment and estimated pick up time of 2:15 pm. Consequently, I decide that everything is fine and I will just call her afterward to apologize for missing her calls.

I call her at 4:10 pm and received no answer. I called her again at 6:55 pm and still no answer. I call her the next day on April 8, Saturday at 5:08 pm and still no answer. I believe I also asked my sister to try calling her and that that was unsuccessful as well. I call her again on April 9 at 3:18 pm and still no answer. Finally, I text her at 3:19 pm asking her if she's receiving my calls but receive no response. I suspect she is intentionally ignoring me, but I want to be absolutely certain before instigating an argument. I ask Uncle Kenny to call her to confirm she's OK. He gets back to me indicating that he was able to successfully call her and talk to her and that she's fine. I have my confirmation.

Finally, at 9:52 pm on Sunday April 9, she texts me "Call me". I call her at 10:12 pm and we have a 10 minute argument. It turns out that my suspicions were correct; she has been intentionally ignoring my calls as some form of retribution for me missing her two calls on Friday. During the phone call, I had the impression she was ready to move on (after all, she did ignore me for 2 days), but I wasn't. I told her that missing two phone calls did not justify her behavior toward me and that I wanted an apology. She didn't understand that I had been privy to the repair information via emails e.g. it's success despite my inaction and its specific times. She did not understand why I was so upset or why I felt that she was wrong and that I deserved an apology. Ultimately, I told her I wasn't going home that Friday April 14 as originally planned. She said "Fine!". And we hung up.

Fallout

We haven't talked since that phone call on April 9. It's been around 2 and half months since. My dad texted me recently (while I was flying back from NYC for AddeConf) on June 23 about how my sister and I shouldn't mistreat/ignore my mom and that we're all she has. And I understand that. But I texted back "It's her choice. She never called me".

The intentional rejection of my phone calls as retribution for the accidental rejection of her phone calls is childish and abusive. I was worried the whole weekend and considered the possibility that something had happened to her. And I'm not being malicious or difficult in my reaction. I simply ask for an apology. And she can't even be bothered to provide that. Despite her devotion to raising me and my sister, I won't tolerate disrespect, even from her. Rather than lift us up and inspire us as a parent, she chooses to play these psychologically manipulative, exhausting games.

Additionally, the fact that this is the second cold war fuels my resolution to continue this standoff. It has soured my opinion of my mom and what I think our relationship. She clearly is immature, stubborn, and short-sighted. There are also clear limitations to her compassion/love if she is willing to ignore me and enter into cold wars so easily rather simply reflect apologize.

I do feel guilty when I reflect on how my mom is living her life without her children visiting as often. However, as I told my dad, it's her choice and she can resolve things easily. For now, I will continue forward on this path.

A lot of people write up a phone contract with their tweens.  Here’s mine:

Congratulations!  You are the recipient of a new iPhone.  It has ruined my life and it will ruin yours.  There will be moments of joy, however.  

I didn’t mean to start off negatively.  It’s just…hard.  This is a contract to help you understand the rules that will hopefully keep you a happy and healthy digital citizen!  

IT IS MY PHONE.  I mean, I have my own phone, so I won't ask for yours back.  I bought it for you, so in that sense it is *your* phone.  I also bought the clothes you wear and the food you eat and I never ask for any of that back.  Yes, sometimes I eat whatever you leave on your plate because I can't help myself.  It's a problem outside of the scope of our current phone contract, but I'll try to do better.  

ALWAYS ANSWER WHEN YOUR MOTHER OR I CALL.  Yes, I know that I nearly always send Nana and Papa’s calls to voicemail.  But that is because I am often busy when they call.  I still love them a lot, it's just that I can’t always talk when they call.  We have a different relationship though, right?

TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT.  And just like I don’t expect to buy a new bed for you each year, I won’t be buying you a new phone each year.  Oh sure, bed companies would have you believe that every year you need the newest bed technology; but I’m not going to pad Big Bed’s pockets every time they introduce some new bell or whistle or some kind of down pillow top.  Of course, at some point these new beds stop working suddenly, suspiciously around the time new bed operating systems come out.  You really can’t win.

I HAVE ACCESS TO IT.  I must have the password to your phone so I can access it at any time.  Make it something easy to remember so I don’t have to reset it all the time like I always have to do on mine.  Eventually, I will want you to have a hard-to-hack password - maybe I’ll even have to buy you a password manager.  I mean, that’s how they get you - could be that the people selling password manager apps are the same people hacking those who don’t use them!  Wouldn’t that be a thing?  These are just the sorts of things that you were blissfully unaware of, pre-phone.

SOMETIMES WE'LL HAVE TECHNOLOGY FREE ACTIVITIES.  Now that you're going on the grid, it's important to make sure you have time off the grid.  Yes, I'm putting you on the grid and asking you to get off the grid.  You'll see!

NO USING YOUR PHONE AFTER 9PM.  Hoo boy, do I wish I had someone to tell me that rule.  I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve worked myself into a lather by checking Twitter right before bed.  I tell myself to read a book, but do I listen?  No.  And in the morning, what’s the first thing I do?  Check Twitter and see what kind of madness is erupting in the news.  All this before coffee!  Why do I do it?  And the weekend - want a guaranteed way to ruin your weekend?  Go ahead and check your phone - there's bound to be some work drama you need to deal with on your "day off."

NO SOCIAL MEDIA.  Speaking of Twitter, we’re not letting you join any social networks without our approval.  That includes Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and any others they come up with.  Trust me, once you get on these things you’ll wonder why the hell your great joke was only “liked” once and meanwhile some friend who isn’t nearly as funny has over 10,000 followers.  It’s maddening.  And Facebook?  Do you like having strong political opinions get nitpicked until you don’t care anymore?  Do you like Game of Thrones spoilers?  Do you like finding out someone you went to high school with is now a total racist?  Okay, I know you’re only going into middle school - but take a look at your current friends and you’ll be pretty surprised which ones of them become lunatics later in life.

IF IT BREAKS, WE MIGHT NOT REPLACE IT RIGHT AWAY.  But honestly we’d be doing you a favor.

woke up [EDIT: woke up from a nightmare about a past abuser!!!] to a missed voicemail telling me that my top surgery consult was canceled, only i could not access said message because my voice messaging was not set up on the new phone

went to appointment and on the way exchanged phone case for a better one at the Verizon place, then went to the ATT place to check if they could help with anything, and got increasingly frustrated when nothing worked!!! NOTHING!!! including a 30+ minute consultation including a call to a supposedly advanced customer service line that only reset my voicemail password and not my entire voicemail service like it was supposed to and only a text to the internet version of customer service for the software issue, which wouldn’t have helped me anyways since apparently the error i keep getting needs to be fixed by samsung and there is no way i’m going to go through that!!! no!!! NO.

And rolled over just in time for the ringtone to stop. Then the text message beep telling me I’ve got voicemail, so I thought, ‘nah man, fuck that noise.’ and rolled back over for some ZZZs.

After sleeps and resetting my voicemail password because nobody calls me unless it’s work and they don’t leave voicemails...I get a fake woman’s robot voice masquerading as an automated message which apparently called me? claiming to be the Customs Department and beginning today I will be fined for GST arrears and it was implied the enforcement squad was gonna come after, PRESS 0 TO CONNECT TO A CUSTOMS OFFICER.

Like, for real?

1) The government is too cheap to have fancy automated robot programs that can call up people.

2) The government is so cheap they usually send letters to your sorry ass.

3) For me to incur GST issues would mean I own a business, WHICH I DO NOT.

Okay folks, I posted my MacBook for sale a month ago on kijiji and it sold right away. I was unable to get the add down till today (cause kijiji wouldn't allow me to reset my password?!). I have received hundreds of texts and emails about this email within the month but today I got a call from someone. After I told him it wasn't available I hung up immediately. He proceeded to call 3 more times but I sent the calls to voicemail each time. He actually left me a message calling me a stupid cunt bitch slut and that I should call him back after I'm done being a bitch? What is wrong with people? Even if I had it why the hell would I call him back and discuss doing business with him!? Why!? He honestly sounded way to dumb to work the laptop anyways. Honestly I tried multiple times to get kijiji to email me to change my password cause I couldn't log in. It was obviously the right email as I was still receiving emails hourly.
