I wanted to walk around Scala. I wanted to admire all the little canon worldbuilding details. I wanted to see all the different beautiful pieces of architecture they had set up, like the big gates, the towers, the arches, the plazas, all from different camera angles. I wanted to talk to the npcs and learn about the culture and what daily life is like in this era, how their systems work, what they complain about, what kinds of questions they might ask you. This is the first time we’ve seen Scala with other people living in it. The beta was already so beautiful and rich with lore just waiting to be explored, and it still might be, but it won’t be the same if it isn’t your own character and your own eyes experiencing the city

Crossing fingers so badly for Missing Link to showcase the transition from Daybreak Town's thoughtless interventionism to Dark Road's Preserving World Order mindset.

In this chapter, Sora goes off to feel more useful, while Donald and Goofy accompany him for the exact same reason.

us: scala is a beautifully diverse world that cannot be easily compared to any region in this world, especially when you take its immense cultural differences through the ages into account
also us: lol Scalans Are British (actively ignoring the ones with other accents)

Just found out about Missing Link. At least I got to find out via memes, so there was at least a little humor in it for me. I am mourning the story we never got to see, like, there is so much I was looking forward to. Confirmation/denial of the theory that the player character is a reincarnation of the one from Union X, world building with the Keyblade wielders and Scala Ad Calum, what part Brain had to play in all this. I'm gonna go insane thinking about it all, there's so much we just lost with this. Man. I really hope they work out some way to get the story out at least, so we at least have some ideas of what happened in that time period.

there’s an interesting trend in kh of worlds and the way they change mirroring characters and the way they change that i really love - destiny islands which tends to be in and out of danger depending on how sora, riku, and kairi are doing, hollow bastion’s revival happening as riku gets away from ansem’s influence and starts slowly doing better, castle oblivion being a blank slate until aqua comes home (which there’s a mechanical reason for, sure, but the land of departure returning alongside the wayfinder trio also has a real thematic resonance), aquas exploration of the castle of dreams in 0.2 mirroring her view of the things that just happened to her, daybreak town not destroyed when its group is scattered but instead becoming the invisible scaffolding that the future is built on…etc etc! there’s a lot of cool examples of this! and the thing i’ve been thinking of all morning is that it makes the vision of scala in kh3 kind of devastatingly sad.
it’s…unclear at best if the scala we visit in kh3 is the real city, or some sort of dream or memory projection from xehanort (being literally inside the generally-not-well-understood kingdom hearts makes it a bit complicated) but it’s so strikingly empty and quiet. again this is partially mechanical - it’s a boss arena - but still. all the little details of life in the environment design, the little market you visit in remind, the chairs and cafes and posters make it feel lived in, but there’s no one there. it’s just xehanort. this final, terrible reflection of his childhood home, preserved perfectly, and he is the solitary person in it. it’s so fucking sad!
i think the end of kh3 does a decent job of humanizing xehanort even before we know him in dark road and even while he’s at his most villainous, and i think scala is a big part of that. like that intro cutscene of him just walking slowly through the streets…..gah. peepaw :(

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone in the community talking about this. (Or maybe they have been, and I've somehow just missed it. ^_^')
All the kudos to OP for figuring this out.

expanding on my tags here a lil bit, I do think ml Scala is meant to take inspiration from multiple different european places but it really is very very italian to me. Like there’s the battle theme and architecture and potential symbolism yeah, but…hmm. Maybe I’m partly pulling from personal experience. I’ve visited Rome before so when I look at some of the shots in ml, mostly the nighttime ones, I just remember walking around the streets the first night I was there and how soft and warm the lighting was. It just feels the same to me somehow, which, if anything, is a testament to the amount of care and attention that was put into developing this version of Scala (from the devs themselves and in-universe ;) )
