#Older sibling and younger sibling dynamic

Early Batman as an angry young kid honestly works so well, in my opinion.

And honestly? It's the kind of rash decision a frustrated kid who doesn't know better and has all the money and privilege in the world might make. Plus for all that he's methodical, contingencies within contingencies, I also have trouble seeing Bruce quietly stewing in his rage and impotence over his parents' deaths for twenty or thirty years before actually acting.

Its also kind of necessary at this point to make the Bat Family timeline even kind of work- you need time for him to take in Dick, for Dick to grow up and become a hero in his own right, to take in Jason, lose him, get him back, to take in Tim, then Steph and Cass, Duke, for him to have Damian and have Damian grow to adolescence, etc, and for Bruce to still be just a middle aged man at most, and still fit enough to be out Batmanning (the comics timeline is... not that well thought-out).

The one tweak I would make is if you want Bruce adopting Dick, then you have to up his age when he goes to Haley's circus by a year, depending on how realistic you want it to be. I actually researched this a while back when trying to work out a possible timeline for Bruce and:

Gotham City is canonically in New Jersey.

New Jersey requires you to be at least eighteen to adopt, and at least 10 years older than the person you're adopting.

Ergo, Bruce would have to be at least 18, and Dick no older than 8, for Bruce to adopt him (I personally prefer a slightly older Dick, especially if he's going to be out crimefighting right away, but that's another issue).

(The other option, which I saw a good post on recently, is to make Alfred technically the one who adopts Dick, at Bruce's behest, shifting their dynamic to more of an older/younger siblings one rather than a father/son or mentor/student one.)

The one big issue I see with this is if it makes Bruce a minor when he meets Selina or Talia, unless you de-age them as well or have them meet Bruce a bit later. And given Selina's in some continuities a sex worker before becoming Catwoman, de-aging her creates a whole other set of creepy issues to address.

But as long as Bruce isn't underage when they hook up, I actually kind of like the idea of a younger Bruce with an older Selina or Talia (especially Talia honestly, she could be centuries old with access to a Lazarus pit). It reverses the usual dynamic of older man/younger woman, and any power imbalance the age difference might normally create is (in my opinion at least) kind of cancelled out by Bruce being fuckoff rich.

Edit: If you shift it a year and have him start Batmanning at 16, then that also explains how he'd know how to drive, among other things. So, incorporating some of the classic stories into this timeline, he's Batman at 16, Year One is 16-17, The Long Halloween and the rise of the rogues is 18, and just after that is when he takes Dick. He's just shy of 30 when Dick leaves and Jason dies.

Bruce Wayne is 15 when he debuts Batman. The boots add a couple of inches, the voice modifier hides the squeaks and cracks of puberty, and the shadows conceal the limitations of his tech. No one expects the Dark Knight to be a teenage boy.

Bruce Wayne is 17 when he goes to Haly's Circus. Alfred reminds him that he is still a kid and should therefore be doing kid activites. The pain of losing his parents is still raw. He emerges with a new responsibility no teenager should have and a shadow that flies with him through Gotham.

Bruce Wayne is 19 when he starts the Justice League with six other heroes. He refuses to unmask for Robin's sake, his encounter with Harvey still fresh in his nightmares. The League respects his decision and he wonders if they would still respect him if they knew his true age.

Bruce Wayne is 21 when Robin starts his own team. He allows himself a wry simle when he realizes he is closer in age to Robin's team than to his own peers.

Bruce Wayne is 26 when he gets into a fight with his son. They both say things they regret and Bruce isn't strong enough to apologize. At the age where many are first starting their families, Bruce is losing his.

That dynamic is some real younger brother older sister stuff, everyone knows it, but they pulled their punches because the older brother younger sister set up is the default in media, and now we're stuck with Nya as the family baby somehow-

Like. Idk how to articulate it but it’s so insane to me that people will with their full chest say “I’m a tsukasa fan I #gethim” and not gaf about saki or ever talk about her or read any of her events or even her card stories with tsukasa. Everything in Tsukasa’s life has been touched by saki. You could, if necessary, take tsukasa out of saki’s story (it would make it worse! But you could). But you cannot take Saki out of Tsukasa’s story. He lives and breathes love for his sister there is no one on earth he values or loves more she is the catalyst for his dreams and his motivation. Before he was anything at all he was a big brother. even in the present he defines his ultimate goal of stardom & how to act like a star by the bench marks of being a good big brother. Don’t even get me started on seeing ppl make tsukasa say an ill word abt saki… they fought in dollfes and he wanted to be taken out back and shot like a lame horse. he 100% was like “well I remember what you’re talking about but you’re upset so clearly I’m wrong” he loves! His sister!! So much!!!! If you like tsukasa you have to love saki those are the rules. His starter vocaloid is the Ideal Big Brother his sister’s favorite stuffed animal is a constant figure in his sekai. His fragment sekai is about being a good big brother.
