What is a Search Engine and How Do They Work?
Search engines are essential tools in the digital age, enabling users to quickly find relevant information online by entering keywords or phrases. They have transformed how we access content, making it easier to conduct research and answer everyday queries. Understanding what search engines are and how they function is crucial for users and businesses seeking to enhance their online presence. This article will explore the definition of search engines, explain their workings, discuss different types, and present the top 50 search engines in 2024, concluding with insights into their significance in our daily lives.
What is a Search Engine?
A search engine is an online tool designed to facilitate the retrieval of information from the internet. Users input keywords or phrases, and the search engine scours its indexed database to present relevant results. Popular examples include Google, Bing, and Yahoo, each offering unique features and capabilities to enhance the search experience.
How Do Search Engines Work?
Tumblr media
Search engines operate through a three-step process: crawling, indexing, and ranking.
Crawling: This is the initial phase where automated programs known as web crawlers or spiders scan the internet for new and updated content. They follow links from one page to another, gathering data to discover new web pages and content.
Indexing: Once crawlers gather information, the next step is to organize and store it in a massive database known as an index. This index acts like a library catalog, making it easier for the search engine to retrieve relevant information quickly when users input search queries.
Ranking: When a user conducts a search, the search engine analyzes its index to find the most relevant results. Complex algorithms determine the ranking of these results based on factors such as keyword relevance, website authority, and user engagement metrics. The result is a list of pages ranked by their relevance to the user’s query.
Types of Search Engines
Search engines can be categorized into several types, each serving different purposes:
General Search Engines: These are the most commonly used search engines, such as Google and Bing, which provide a wide array of results across various topics.
Vertical Search Engines: These focus on specific niches or sectors, such as shopping (e.g., Amazon), travel (e.g., Kayak), or job searches (e.g., Indeed). They cater to users looking for specialized information within a particular area.
Meta Search Engines: Meta search engines aggregate results from multiple search engines, allowing users to access a broader range of information from various sources. Examples include Dogpile and MetaCrawler.

How Do I Fix AOL mail disappeared Problem?
I understand your concern about missing emails in your AOL Mail. If you're experiencing issues with AOL old email disappeared, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:
Check Spam/Junk Folder: Sometimes, emails can end up in the spam or junk folder by mistake. Make sure to check these folders regularly to see if your missing emails are there. If you find them there, mark them as "Not Spam" or move them to your inbox.
Filters and Rules: Check if you have set up any filters or rules that may be directing incoming emails to specific folders or labels. Adjust or delete any rules that might be causing emails to be missed.
Storage Limit: AOL Mail has a storage limit, so if your mailbox is full, you may not receive new emails. Delete unnecessary emails or archive them to free up space.
Blocked Senders: Ensure that you haven't accidentally blocked the email addresses of senders whose emails you're missing. Go to your settings and review your blocked senders list.
Email Forwarding: If you have set up email forwarding, ensure that it is configured correctly. Emails might be getting forwarded to another address, and that's why you're not seeing them in your AOL inbox.
Check Other Folders: AOL Mail may automatically categorize emails into folders like "Social," "Promotions," or "Updates." Check these folders to see if your missing emails are there.
Check on Multiple Devices: If you access your AOL Mail on multiple devices (e.g., computer, smartphone, tablet), make sure that the issue is consistent across all devices. This will help you determine if the problem is specific to one device or platform.
AOL Server Status: Occasionally, AOL may experience server issues that can affect email delivery. Check the AOL Server Status page or their official social media accounts for any known outages or service disruptions.
Clear Browser Cache: If you're accessing AOL Mail through a web browser, try clearing your browser's cache and cookies. Sometimes, cached data can cause display issues.
Contact AOL Support: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's a good idea to reach out to AOL Mail support for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance and investigate the problem if it's related to their servers or systems.
Remember to keep your AOL Mail account secure and avoid sharing your password with anyone. Additionally, regularly updating your password is a good practice to maintain account security.

How to Use AOL For Your Business?
Tumblr media
While AOL (America Online) was once a popular internet service provider and email provider, its usage has significantly declined in recent years. However, if you still wish to use AOL for your business email, you can do so. Here's a basic guide on how to use AOL for your business:
Create an AOL Account: If you don't already have an AOL account, you can visit the AOL website (https://www.aol.com) and click on "Sign Up." Follow the instructions to create an account with a unique username and password.
Set Up Your AOL Email: Once you have an AOL account, you will automatically have access to an AOL email address ([email protected]). If you prefer a custom domain email address (e.g., [email protected]), you may need to use a different email provider that offers custom domain services.
Customize Your AOL Account: Access the settings of your AOL account to customize preferences, such as changing your display name, updating your signature, and managing other account-related options.
Organize Your Inbox with Folders: AOL uses folders to organize your emails. You can create folders for different categories, projects, or clients, allowing you to sort your emails effectively.
Enable Spam and Virus Protection: AOL provides built-in spam and virus protection features. Ensure these settings are enabled to reduce the risk of receiving spam emails or opening potentially harmful attachments.
Set Up Filters: AOL allows you to create filters to automatically sort incoming emails into specific folders based on various criteria. This can help you manage your inbox more efficiently.
Use AOL Calendar (Optional): AOL offers a calendar feature that you can use to schedule and organize your business appointments and events.
Integrate with Other Apps (Optional): AOL provides integrations with other AOL-owned properties and services. However, keep in mind that AOL's ecosystem is not as extensive as other providers like Google Workspace or Microsoft Office 365.
Maintain Security: Ensure your AOL account is protected with a strong password and consider enabling two-factor authentication for an extra layer of security.
Regularly Check for Updates: Keep an eye out for AOL updates and new features that may improve your experience using the platform.
It's important to note that while AOL can be used for basic email communication, its features and functionalities may be limited compared to more modern and widely-used email providers like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo Mail. If you are looking for a more robust and professional email solution for your business, you might want to consider Google Workspace, Microsoft Office 365, or other email hosting services that offer custom domain support and a broader range of productivity tools.
Additionally, before committing to any email service for your business, review the terms of service and make sure it complies with your organization's needs and any applicable legal requirements.

Tumblr media
Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Mara
Mara's first X-Files story on Gossamer was posted in 1996. From around then through the original run of the show and beyond, Mara (aka MaraKara) was actively involved with the online fandom and fic. As an example, she was one of the Primal Screamers, a group of X-Files fic fans who originally rallied around the ficĀ Primal Sympathy by Lydia Bower after the season 4 finale. They "screamed," if you will, for "Primal." They continued rallying for other fics, even posting an X-Files fanfic primer of to-read classics that I've talked about before. Big thanks to Mara for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
I was much more of a reader but I'm thrilled when I see young fans finding great stories for the first time. Ā Like to engage a little in the "back in my day" stuff about checking atxc for story updates instead of finding a complete story archived on a website.
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
It was fun. Ā It was a lot of smart people with different backgrounds and points of view all sharing in their love of Mulder and Scully. Ā With all the awful around (especially lately), chatting up the latest episode or the new story from your favorite author was fun.
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
All of the above. Ā Message boards got spammy, so did atxc but the mailing lists were the best. Ā Great conversations there about everything from episodes and stories to real life milestones – all good.
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
There were a lot of smart, talented people who enjoyed the show to the point of talking about it, writing about it and when the show sort of fell apart, the smart, talented people kept being smart and talented. Ā They wrote their own episodes, they recommended other good television programs, movies, books. Ā The community grew past the show. Ā That's what I took away – what started as an interest in sci-fi series on the (then) upstart FOX network, became a fandom of great people.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
I worked weekends during the show's first season so I was home on Fridays. Ā Once Mulder and Scully went to Alaska with Felicity Huffman, Jeff Kober and Xander Berkley, I had my show.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
I was looking around for some reaction to "Pusher" and found a story called "Mercy". Ā I was all in after that.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
I made wonderful friends during that time so I will always have a positive relationship with the fandom. Ā The two reboot seasons brought some people back and it was great to see. Ā Again, it was a fandom with smart, talented people. Ā Who wouldn't want to hang with that?
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
I've dabbled in a couple of obscure fandoms (no "Battlestar" or Marvel-verse for me). Ā With so many different entertainment choices and so many different ways to watch, everything just seems smaller. Ā The Wall Street Journal wrote an article about Mulder's dead for the summer turn in season four a few days after the season finale. Ā I just can't see any season finale on any series getting that kind of attention anymore.
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
Of course after our heroes, I liked Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle on "CSI", I'm a fan of all things NCIS. Ā I'm a cop show fan – Mulder and Scully's FBI hook got me more than the sci-fi feel of the show.
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
In my office, (back when I use to go to my office), I have a piece of paper behind my desk with a photo of Gillian Anderson shooting a basketball in the "Pusher" episode (it was a behind the scenes photo). Ā Under the photo there is a quote about "a very short heroine" and all she accomplished in a world of superheroes and bulked-up movie stars. Ā Scully is with me every day.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
Dabble in my smaller fandom reads. Ā While there are talented and gifted writers, there just is not the volume of great stories – especially novel-length reads. Ā "The X-Files" had a whole group of authors who wrote nothing but 15-chapter mysteries. Ā Not as much of that anymore.
I do still read "the classics". Ā When I travel (back when I use to travel), a flight delay and decent wifi at the airport might mean revisiting an oldie but a goodie.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
I don't want to list anything here because I'll remember six other great stories as soon as I send them. Ā I will say I loved any Mulder as profiling wonder-boy story and I am pro-"Iolokus".
Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
The joys of being adult mean less time for fun, more time for the people keeping me employed and living indoors.
What's the story behind your pen name?
None. Ā AOL needed something and it was easy to type.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
No. Ā They were into the joys of being an adult much earlier than I was.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
Follow your bliss. Ā Read what you like, re-read what's good and be like our friend Lilydale who helps younger/new to the fandom/back to the fandom readers find the best of what's out there.

ā€œWhy GetResponse is the best -All In One Solutionā€Ā  Newsletter Tool
GetResponse claim to be the easiest newsletter tool available, with a tonne of pro features. This is a big claim, especially as their prices are so competitive. The Polish-based company’s global reach extends to 182 countries, and claim to engage over 1 billion subscribers every month! That’s a lot of emails.
Tumblr media
Feature-wise, they do boast a lot more than most other email marketing services. From simple A/B testing, to custom landing pages; comprehensive design testing to video email marketing.
The landing pages are especially interesting as they are part of
Conversion Funnel, a new feature that takes care of traffic generation and can even act as an online store including payment processing. Another feature that’s worth mentioning is their automation, allowing for advanced automated campaigns based on triggers/conditions such as sales or even location. Other tools offer automation, but most are not as powerful or user-friendly.
On higher-tier plans, you also get access to their webinar feature, as well as an inbuilt CRM — extras you don’t commonly see in email marketing platforms. It was certainly enough to capture our interest — and, eventually, our business (we now use GetResponse for many of our automated campaigns). So let’s take a deeper dive into this tool.
Is GetResponse the right newsletter service for you?
Recommended if:
You want to capture customer leads:
GetResponse is one of the few newsletter tools we’ve tested that’s truly built for inbound. It offers flexible forms, a landing page editor, Google Analytics integration and sophisticated automation for segmentation and emails, allowing you to both capture and nurture new leads. On top of that, it’s even possible to host live and on-demand webinars with them.
Their new Conversion Funnel feature allows you to do all of this in an organized manner and easily track where’s converting best.
You’re an ecommerce:
If you’re an online store owner, GetResponse is packed with features to help you drive more sales — integrations with platforms like Magento and Shopify, abandoned cart campaigns, dynamic email content (e.g. based on purchases), and sales tracking. These are available from the PROFESSIONAL plan and upwards.
If you opt for the cheaper ESSENTIAL plan, as an ecommerce, you’ll benefit from GetResponse’s Autofunnel feature. Here you can set up or connect your ecommerce site and start building your sales funnel with landing and thank you pages, social media campaigns and much more. Autofunnel is ideal for small businesses selling products and services online.
You need sophisticated automation:
We were impressed with GetResponse’s workflow builder, which enables you to set up automations for a whole range of actions, including sending emails, assigning lead scores, contact tagging, segmentation and data updates. (Available on higher-tier plans only.)
Not recommended if:
You need solid deliverability rates:
Deliverability should be an important consideration for any email marketer. GetResponse had some room for improvement in our deliverability tests. Of course, deliverability rates can always change, so we’re hoping this will improve in the future.
You’re after a free plan:
GetResponse don’t offer a free (or even freemium) plan — just a free trial of 30 days. If you want a free newsletter service, check out these providers instead.
Rating details
Ease of Use
Mostly easy to navigate. The design is clean and intuitive and there is a handy Quick actions section that lists the most commonly performed tasks. Widgets can be added to or removed from the dashboard, giving you full control to manage your dashboard views. One small thing they could improve is to make it a little easier to navigate out of the email editor.
Newsletter Creation
Editor
The drag and drop editor is user-friendly, allowing for a wide range of email types. In fact, the editor is perhaps more flexible than most other tools — the range of options for editing might take a bit of practice though. Bonus points for including undo/redo buttons and a revision history. Our main gripe is the lack of a central style editor. It would be handy to set fonts and colors for the entire newsletter.
Personalization
You can personalize subject lines and email text using contact field data (and specify fallbacks if this data doesn’t exist for a particular contact), but it requires a tiny bit of if/then/else coding.
Email types
Classic newsletters, autoresponders, RSS to newsletter, easy A/B testing, also surveys. A good range.
Choice and Flexibility of Template Designs
There is a lot of choice and all of the designs are responsive. It’s easy to use and edit the templates. We couldn’t find an easy way to add columns to templates, though.
Email Automation
With GetResponse’s powerful and flexible workflow editor, you can build some pretty complex automated sequences. Unfortunately, you’ll need at least the expensive Professional plan to use this feature. Aside from being able to send series of emails based on specified conditions and triggers, there are also rules to move subscribers from one list to another. Automations for lead scoring, abandoned cart campaigns, and web event tracking are also available. More on email automation.
List Management
GetResponse’s list management capabilities are superb. You can use custom filters to save segments of contacts with similar characteristics (e.g. based on contact field data, email engagement, or lead scores). Through automations, you’ve got the ability to add tags, and even automate list management rules. There’s also a section dedicated to list hygiene, allowing you to create rules for deleting and blacklisting contacts.
Registration Forms/ Opt-in & Opt-out- Process
Fairly easy to use, with many templates available, or the ability to create your own. There are several types of integration available: you can embed on your site or host the form on GetResponse. Options to edit thank you pages and the backend (e.g. which lists to add subscribers to) are a little hidden, though.
Deliverability
GetResponse’s deliverability leaves room for improvement. If you are looking for a solid tool and a better performer, ActiveCampaign would be a better choice.
Reports and Analysis
Thorough reports, with geo-tracking available and desktop vs. mobile. You can also see which clients were used, as well as when people clicked and opened emails in a chart view. You can get all the details of the openers and clickers, as well as Google Analytics integration, and conversion/ecommerce tracking. There’s even an option to compare the performance of different campaigns; however, there is no heatmap available.
Languages
Available in up to 25 languages.
Further Features
Spam- and Design-Testing
Inbox testing is available on the site, allowing you to see the design in many different browsers and devices. You can also view the email’s SpamScore, which is a rating from 0–5 of how likely your email will be recognized as spam.
Bounce Management
Located within their ā€˜list hygiene’ section. Hard bounces are removed immediately from your lists, while soft bounces are removed after four unsuccessful attempts.
Blacklist
Both a blacklist and suppression lists are available. Manual import, but no export options available.
Storage available for data and images
1 Gigabyte
Apart from being able to add your own files, you also have over 1,000 stock photos available for use.
Pro Features
Authentication
SPF and DKIM are supported. They are apparently whitelisted by major clients (AOL, Yahoo, Outlook etc.)
Own Domain
This is only available on the ā€˜Enterprise’ plan. You can assign your own domains/subdomains to landing page URLs.
Different levels of account access
The ā€˜Essential’ plan allows up to 3 users, while the ā€˜Professional’ plan allows up to 5. On top of this, you can buy multi-user add-ons for $20 per month, adding another 5 users. There’s no specific access levels, but you can define specific access areas for each user.
Integrations
Quite a few available, including all the big tools from ecommerce, CRM, social and CMS (Shopify, Magento, Salesforce, Facebook, WordPress etc).
Landing Page Editor
The landing page editor is part of the Conversion Funnel feature, where you can also set up your advertising and social media campaigns, web forms, webinars, and ecommerce, and track your conversions.
There are over 180 landing page templates, and A/B testing and responsive design are also available. Unlimited landing pages are available on all of the plans, though other funnel features are limited to the Plus plan and above.
Support
Via e-mail and live chat, support was very quick, friendly and helpful. The knowledge base is thorough and easy to navigate.
GetResponse is a very powerful, versatile and user-friendly newsletter tool. It’s also good value for the amount of features available. Deliverability could be better, though.
Conclusion
GetResponse really came through with the goods, managing to provide both the features and ease-of-use that most other newsletter tools fall short of. We also noted the great automation mechanisms for list management, as well as its flexible and intuitive automation workflows..
While the editor can be a little fiddly when performing certain tasks, their templates are responsive and good enough to create something useful. There’s even an app for iOS and Android that allows you not only to track, but also to send newsletters on the go.
With its long list of powerful features like landing pages and even webinars, and now with their new Autofunnel feature, GetResponse is certainly doing quite a few things right. While it would be great to see an uplift in deliverability rates, GetResponse scores extremely well in most other areas. As an email marketing tool, it’s definitely versatile enough to perform almost everything you’d need. We certainly found this to be true in our case for EmailToolTester’s own email campaigns, and it’s a tool we’d have few reservations about recommending to others.

A while back I made a post about a Good Omens You’ve Got Mail AU that was a little... unconventional. And I still stand behind that version 100%, but my brain decided it was time to circle back around to this particular AU. And the end result I have here is still a little unconventional, but much less so.
To start with we’re going to go ahead and update the setting to present day. Well, not *present* day but like 2018/2019 present day. So obviously meeting in an AOL chat room is a nonstarter. Instead they meet on Goodreads. Crowley leaves a long and scathing review of Hamlet because those are his genuine feelings on the play and because he likes stirring up shit. Aziraphale sees this review and is appalled, so sends Crowley a message in response debating his points. From there they get to talking and keep talking and next thing they know they’re virtual pen pals. At one point Crowley tries to look Aziraphale up on social media, but fails to find anything. He instead just asks him if he has an Instagram or Twitter or something. Once Aziraphale understands the question, it is established that Goodreads is as social as his media gets. They decide maybe they’ll just keep it to emails and keep it all anonymous; that that could be fun.
Now here’s where we start to veer into a little unconventional. Crowley is the small business owner. He owns a plant shop/nursery. He got kicked out of the house at 16 and had to scrape and do some things he’s not proud of to get by, but now he’s got himself his own shop and is doing pretty well. Anathema and Newt are his employees and he oscillates between acting annoyed at their couple-y behavior and being super smug claiming he’s the one who got them together since they met at his shop.
Aziraphale owns a one-third share of a chain of general merchandise big-box stores he, along with his older siblings Gabriel and Michael, inherited from his mother. Gabriel and Michael spout a lot of the rhetoric about how their stores are a good thing because they offer one stop shopping at discounted prices and other such things. Aziraphale echoes the same sentiments, but it’s clear he has some private doubts about the way they run business. His job in the company is head of PR, which he doesn’t necessarily enjoy but his siblings want him there because he comes off as very likable. Sandalphon is the VP working under Aziraphale, and he is very through about filtering information so Aziraphale only has to see and deal with the things he needs to know — the standards as to what Aziraphale does and more importantly doesn’t need to know are set by Gabriel. Aziraphale also has a friend, Madame Tracy, who he met because they go to the same manicurist.
Our story proper starts with a new superstore about to be opened up not far from Crowley’s shop. This is a problem for Crowley because the store is going to have a garden center, which will be direct competition for him. Not every store in the chain has a garden center but this one, located in the same neighborhood as a local plant shop, will. Funny how things turn out like that.
Aziraphale is out walking, getting a feel for this neighborhood where their new store is going to be, when it starts to rain. He planned ahead and brought an umbrella, but Crowley, who was making a quick trip to grab some coffee, did not. Aziraphale finds him hiding out under an awning and offers to share his umbrella and walk Crowley back to his shop. They do, and Aziraphale fawns over Crowley’s plants, they talk and flirt a little, then Aziraphale leaves. Newt and Anathema tease Crowley a bit, pointing out he should have asked for Aziraphale’s number and Anathema suggests Aziraphale is Crowley’s email boyfriend. Crowley tells them both to shut up and it’s all good banter. (Side note, neither Crowley nor Aziraphale have any sort of preexisting significant other in this version.)
Jump ahead to the next time Aziraphale and Crowley meet in person at a charity event or whatever. Crowley is understandably pretty upset when he finds out who Aziraphale really is and gets very accusatory. Aziraphale gets defensive and the conversation does not go well. From there we get the back and forth with Crowley attacking the superstore to protect his and other small businesses, and Aziraphale trying to defend his company and their actions.
Eventually Crowley starts getting really weighed down with all this and decides fuck anonymity, he wants to meet his virtual not-boyfriend and get in-person support (and, look okay, he’s not saying he wants or expects cuddles, but it they’re on the table, he’s not going to say no). Aziraphale agrees and they arrange for a place to meet. Aziraphale gets there first, and when Crowley arrives he does a sneak peek in the window and sees Aziraphale sitting there, wearing the tartan bow tie he chose as an identifier. Crowley freaks out and basically turns tail and runs.
He wanders aimlessly for a long while, continuing to have a mental breakdown over everything. Eventually he makes his way back to the meeting spot with the vague idea that he needs to tell Aziraphale what’s going on. But when Crowley gets there Aziraphale is walking out the door, bow tie nowhere in sight and trying very hard to pretend he’s not crying. So Crowley feels like shit and certainly can’t tell Aziraphale the truth *now*. Instead he offers Aziraphale some comfort over, you know, whatever it is Aziraphale is upset about, obviously Crowley wouldn’t know anything about it. Aziraphale is surprised and touched and in return offers a semi-apology for everything going on between their two companies, throwing out that line that it’s not personal, it’s just business. Crowley refutes that, sharing some of his backstory to highlight how it’s very personal to him. He then follows up with some pointed questions about the things Aziraphale’s business is doing, but for once makes it clear that he’s not trying to attack Aziraphale personally and genuinely believes that Aziraphale might be innocent and ignorant of it all. They part ways fairly amicably.
Crowley goes home, freaks out some more, goes to work the next day still freaking out — not helped by Anathema pointing out that she did try to tell him way back in the beginning that Aziraphale was his mystery guy — and continues to freak out for the rest of the day and the next. Finally he manages to mostly sort through it all in his head and decides he forgives Aziraphale. And now that he’s not fueled by spite he acknowledges that while he does have a good chunk of money saved up to keep the business afloat for a while, it’s not sustainable, and he’s better off quitting while he’s ahead. He sends Aziraphale an email apologizing for missing their meeting, blaming work stuff that came up. He goes on to say, without getting into too much detail, that he’s having to close his business down. He says he’s still processing and doesn’t want to talk about it right now, but he’ll reach back out later. At this point he has no intention of doing that; he’s forgiven Aziraphale but he doesn’t want any part of the unethical business Aziraphale is helping to run.
Meanwhile, after their conversation Aziraphale goes home and frets, then ends up looking further into some of the claims Crowley made. He finds out they’re true and frets about that and what it means. Then he gets the email that his friend is shutting down his business and frets about that too. Then the next day he’s in a meeting with Gabriel and Michael and a lot of the other company heads fretting and is told that Crowley’s announced his business is closing down. Which is now really just too much at once; his friend and Crowley — who’s actually not that bad at all — both having to shut down their businesses at the same time and— Wait a second. The lightbulb comes on and Aziraphale realizes Crowley is his virtual pen pal. He stands up, right in the middle of the meeting, quits, and just walks out.
Without even really thinking about where he’s going he ends up in front of Crowley’s shop. At which point he realizes what a terrible idea this is; in the email Crowley had said he didn’t want to talk and even if he did want to, he certainly wouldn’t want to talk to Aziraphale. But Newt sees him standing out there and tells him to come in. There’s a few awkward exchanges between Aziraphale and Crowley, and then Aziraphale suddenly erupts into word vomit. Crowley was totally right about everything, his company was up to shady stuff, and Aziraphale didn’t know, not that that’s any kind of excuse, but he did quit as soon as he heard and—
Crowley’s brain shuts off for a minute there after that, and boots back up when he realizes Aziraphale has stopped talking and is just standing there super anxious. Crowley asks to confirm that Aziraphale quit his job and Aziraphale says yes he did. So then Crowley suggests, hey we’re both unemployed now, tempt you to lunch? Which is not in the least what Aziraphale was expecting, but he agrees, and they go off for a lunch date at like 10:45 in the morning.
For those keeping score at home, yes at this point both Aziraphale and Crowley know the other is their virtual pen pal, but neither of them know the other knows and they’re not telling. Because they’re idiots. So during this courtship time we establish that Crowley is planning on going to school to get certified for landscape design — something he’s actually been interested in for a while but never had time to do. Aziraphale comes to a deal with his siblings for them to buy out his portion of the company. He plans to use a small chunk of the money to support a comfortable but modest lifestyle, and the rest is going to fund activism against unethical practices in large corporations. Fortunately Aziraphale has a lot of experience in handling public relations which will come in handy for that kind of thing.
Eventually, with a couple of kicks in the butt by Anathema and Madame Tracy, Aziraphale and Crowley ā€œconfessā€ to each other that they are the other’s email buddy. Cue friendly laughter over them both being idiots, and they live happily ever after. The end.

Yugioh S4 Ep 4: Pegasus and His Unlimited Moxie
So, I’m finally back after that long--time--when I was sick, then busy, etc etc. Long story, I peaced out from social media for the large part, and my method for finding solace mostly involved watching so muchĀ  ā€œbig living in a tiny house.ā€
Those houses are so damn tiny.
And now I feel better, so lets get back to business.
Just FYI, this is a midweek post because this weekend I’ll be exploring a part of California I didn’t know existed before my friend was like ā€œNapa’s booked, so we’re going South to do our wedding in the other wine countryā€ and it’s like ā€œthe hell are you talking about other wine country?????ā€
So I might be driving to a large cardboard cutout of a winery, and me and 400 guests are going to just stand in front of it and pretend that it’s real for a couple days. This means that I will probably make only like maybe three updates this month and I’m just going to have to come to terms with that.
And in case you are wondering (you’re not) the bye bye bye mashup dance we’re doing for the wedding is going great. It’s really freakin great that the Seahawks decided to choose this week to steal our thunder, so now everyone at this wedding will think we’re just all really into Football. (I’m just telling you that because I feel a need to complain so thank you for listening.)
But anyway, it was a nice surprise amongst all this *stuff* I didn’t really want to do, that this particular episode of Yugioh is pretty great. Like...guys we get Pegasus, we get Kaiba having a meltdown, we get PEGASUS. Like I forgot how much I like Pegasus.
So first off, Yugi and friends decided to watch the news about the whole shpeal from last episode, probably because each and every one of them was certain they all shared the same collective fever dream.
Tumblr media
Something to note about Yugioh is they use a lot of near future tech, and I don’t know how much of that sci-fi goes completely over the heads of kids nowadays since this has become so normal. But yo, people in 2002 were still using AOL.
A lot has changed in 10 years. Just let that sink in, babies in the back.
(read more under the cut)
Also, please turn your entire attention over to this
Tumblr media
Man.
the weird orange cookie on this painting is what really gets to me. It looks like a handmade soap. Because in order to soothe my soul during this stressful month I also watched a lot of cold-process soap making videos.
*quickly looks up to see if there’s Yugioh Soap*
Yeah that doesn’t exist. Hey do you think that if I sent in a Yugioh soap design into Royalty Soaps she’d actually make it? I mean, she did Studio Ghibli. This is just Studio Ghibli but on fire and with terrible hair and actually very different.
(And yes, I did, just now, in fact, make a soap design that I’m absolutely mailing to Royalty Soaps. I’ll put it at the end. No idea what it should smell like, mostly because the last thing I want to do when watching Yugioh is think about how ANY of this smells.)
See, tangents like this are why I don’t have more time.
Anyway, Yugi recalls that he was supposed to *do a thing* but also recalls that he was given really no instructions at all.
Tumblr media
When something absolutely wonderful happens.
Tumblr media
Y’all I was like shouting at the screen ā€œBE A TAPE BE A TAPE BE A TAPEā€ and lo and behold:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dude. Pegasus is such freakin mastermind. Remember that this show started out with them streaming video on a computer, and what did he decide to do? He sent them a tape. Pegasus knows FULL WELL how much they want to see this tape but at the same time...don’t want to watch this tape, and what follows is everyone deciding if they should or should not open Pandora’s box. A Pandora’s box they opened once before and then murdered Grandpa entirely by accident.
I can’t believe they sat on this joke for four seasons. It’s such a freakin good joke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So of course it’s the same kid who once decided it would be a great idea to put together a puzzle that came in a box that said ā€œWARNING THIS GODAWFUL THING KILLS PEOPLEā€ who decided to just stick this in the VCR when everyone else was fighting and no one was looking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, this is not a joke, this is literally how Pegasus decided to open this tape by scolding him for not keeping in touch when Pegasus tried to kill them not once but multiple times back on murder island. Pegasus thinks this deserves him at least a Christmas card.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something that’s also very Pegasus is that he um--doesn’t even bother wearing an eyepatch nowadays. He’s just got...one eye now...just an empty socket that he covers with bangs and is like ā€œya I dare you not look at it.ā€
And then on, this kid’s show, they basically go through the checklist of things that are ā€œthings a child abductor would ask you to doā€
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s it. That’s the whole tape. It’s the end of the world and Pegasus wants to get one last good prank in before it all goes belly up.
And it worked really good on Joey. But unfortunately, did not seem to phase Yugi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then after this, the show gets very sidetracked by some side characters that are...they still exist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all, how much did Weevil spend on a bug drone? Like...what’s this guy’s day job?
Second of all, Rex and Weevil live on some weird brain plane, where they’re pretty sure that the upper echelon of card people are all in love with eachother (which, I don’t blame them, I’ve seen tumblr, it does give that impression if you’ve never watched this show). What they don’t realize is how badly each of the upper echelon of card people want to murder the Hell out of eachother, wipe eachother’s brains, and blow eachother up on a 6000 ft tower on an abandoned island.
Tumblr media
so I guess...Unfortunately...Rex and Weevil are...still with us. Their reasoning is kind of weird--they want super good cards--but like...what’s the point of having super good cards if you’re still Rex and Weevil? Rex is so bad at cards we didn’t even get to see him lose in S2.
Also, the biker gang is back, and I still don't know their font color because they’re in dim lighting in this scene so I’ll just use these temporary font colors for now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, having done his one last good Joke (and maybe the only good joke that Pegasus has ever made) Pegasus decided to sit and wait for someone to do a murder on him. I mean he’s not psychic anymore, but he’s figured he’s screwed enough people that this was how he was going to go out anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mai....Valentine....
So I guess she’s back for another season? It’s weird, she made one cameo and then that was it for this episode, but it was very clearly Mai Valentine. Bro brought up that they had to make her a villain again, because she’s literally their only girl villain and I was like ā€œno that’s, not right they’ve got...ā€ and then I kinda sat there for a couple of seconds and I realized ā€œoh dude there’s only been one girl villain so far in all of Yugioh!ā€ and he was like ā€œYEP.ā€
Because both of us completely forgot about Rebecca until I wrote this in this post and he was double checking it just now. My apologies to the Rebecca stans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Yugi decided to let us know something extremely disturbing about his curse. The showed played it off like this was a cute thing you would want to have happen. But no. No one would ever want this.
Tumblr media
Ho boy! They share FEELINGS?
So like...
...bear with me here--when Yugi is scared, Pharaoh gets scared. When Yugi is tired, Pharaoh feels tired. When Yugi has a complete meltdown basically every single day, Pharaoh reaches for his Tums. So um...I have to ask the question...
So who’s dating Tea? Yes, I know the real answer is neither of them, but who is the one that keeps bringing forth this ship that this show is supposed to be shipping? Both of them??? I mean they have the same feelings, and before I was like, well, I’m sure Pharaoh just kinda turns around and watches brain TV when Yugi and Tea talk about...deadlifting, or whatever she’s into, but nah he’s like...he’s got the same feelings as Yugi.
Does that just...never bother them? Like...they never get jealous? Ever?
It’s so freakin weird.
This whole sequence was Yugi being like ā€œYou can’t keep a secret from me Pharaoh, I will instantly know since I can feel you lying to meā€ and it’s like hot damn that’s a big lore drop that they just hop and skip away from.
Tumblr media
So the next day they go to the airport and just go unsupervised to a foreign country.
This makes complete sense on Gramps’ part, because he was exploring Egyptian caves most of his life, so in comparison, California is baby town and Yugi would be fine. Clearly Gramps doesn’t know enough about Oakland.
Then again, Grandpa spent a very long and mysterious time in the Middle East raiding so many tombs and stealing an entire artifact that contains the whole history of a lost age of Egypt and an actual Pharaoh’s soul so like...probably wouldn’t get you past TSA in 2002. He’d send off like every red flag warning in the airport.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Give me an Air Joey spinoff this instant, Yugioh, you cowards.
It’ll be just like Wings, except all the pilots are very bad at their job and haunted by multiple ghosts.
Tumblr media
There’s a very long pissing segment where there was no piss, but Rex begging Weevil to let him piss in the airplane. It’s about as much as you can expect out of a Rex and Weevil segment. And like, basically at this point, Rex and Weevil are married, yet this ship is never, not once, ever surfaced in my feed of fanart I see out of y’all.
And I don't blame you.
Now, when we get to California, we find out that Croquet either went completely gray or was replaced with an identical twin and also...
Tumblr media
GUYS IT’S MY HOMESLICE.
Which doesn’t really look like this, PS.
Tumblr media
So bro has already told me that they’re going to San Fransisco next episode or so (OMG I’m so excited to talk about it), so this is absolutely supposed to be SFO in the show. (maaaybe Oakland Airport? But I super doubt it)
Most people outside of CA don’t know the vast scale of Bay Area and that the San Fransisco Airport is not very well named since it is...not close to San Fransisco at all.
So, I’m going to guess that the show thinks they landed directly in the heart of SF. With the way this vista looks, I think they basically just painted the view from north of Downtown. Which is especially fun because that is a pretty bougie community and the thought of having just a major airport smack in the middle of it makes my heart warm and fuzzy because they have voted out an affordable housing community SO many more times than is morally acceptable. Serves you right, here’s your international airport across the street.
But Bro has warned me ahead of time that this season makes absolutely no sense geography wise...and I’m pretty stoked for that.
And then, as if reading my mind, Tea removes Rex and Weevil from the show, yet again.
Tumblr media
Incredible that they got through customs like that, but they did arrive on a private plane, and maybe customs are different for them? I...don’t think it would be, even for a private plane, everyone has to go through customs. But, it’s a kids show, so Rex and Weevil snuck into America in a luggage bag, just like how Fox News warned us about.
Then again, I imagine that the customs agent was like ā€œyo there’s two human bodies stuffed in here!????ā€ and was like ā€œohhhhh wait, it’s a Pegasus’ plane. That adds up. Ya.ā€ and just let it through.
Tumblr media
Time for a classic Kaiba meltdown sequence, where he puts on a show of being really competent but is in reality acting like a stack of screaming cats in a purple trench coat.
Mokuba just working overtime to keep this ship afloat because man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then this next part isn’t a joke I made up--Kaiba only took as long as it took to monologue for five seconds about his reputation before doing this:
Tumblr media
It’s more than possible that the translators have no idea who Roland is, and unlike me, isn’t keeping tabs on Roland every second that green haired fourthKaiba is on screen.
Tumblr media
So Pegasus decides to give Kaiba a call on his video phone--because again he only saves the Panasonic Camcorder for spooking Yugi.
Pegasus could have just *called* Yugi the entire time, lol.
Anyway, without the camcorder, Pegasus now has room to stretch out his legs and stick his feet directly in the screen like the end of the world wasn’t less than 2 days ago.
Tumblr media
And the show isn’t telling us why or how this is happening after the whole Mai thing that happened. But it’s nice to know that even when Pegasus may be absolutely held up against his will, he still freakin slays.
Tumblr media
Youknow, Pegasus does more in this one episode to remind me that ā€œoh yeah, Pegasus was my favorite character this whole timeā€ than anyone else and he did in like two calls, sitting in a chair behind his desk, just screwing with people to screw with them.
Tumblr media
And what I enjoy about Pegasus is that, although he had his eyeball removed--he’s still a freakin asshole. He still super sucks. I had a lot of questions about ā€œhow much of Pegasus being the worst was the eyeball?ā€ And apparently the answer was ā€œVERY little, this guy is just the freakin worst. Didn’t need to be cursed at all.ā€
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so, Yugioh doesn’t really do transformation sequences--unless you count when Yugi sometimes goes ā€œyugiohhhhhhā€ and then to everyone else looks virtually the same. Instead Yugioh does gear up sequences.
Tumblr media
Where we find out that Seto promised Mokuba he wouldn’t play cards anymore until he was done building all those theme parks.
I guess it’s unfortunate for Mokuba that this whole Pegasus end of the world thing happened out of nowhere and also unfortunate for Mokuba that Kaiba can build card-themed theme parks Really Quickly. I think Mokuba was banking on it taking an entire lifetime to build a park but youknow, looking at how many sequels of Yugioh there are...eh, Mokuba should have instead dared Seto to give up dueling until he finished a single semester of public school. Then those cards would have stayed buried.
Tumblr media
Hey um...did Kaiba add hip spikes on this purple coat since Season 2? I don’t remember him having those.
Good thing I write a blog and I can check. Time for some time travel to Season 2.
Tumblr media
Ah, yes, the hip spikes were not there in Season 2. So, at some point in between then and now, Kaiba looked at this old ass coat hanging in his closet and was like ā€œNot Enough Butt Spikes!ā€ and just glued em on there.
But anyway, back to Season 4...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure this is one of the doors from Evangelion.
Tumblr media
And so, off they go, straight to their death, in the world’s most un-aerodynamic vehicle.
Really glad that Dragon Plane seems to have become a permanent character, as it would if you spent 10 million dollars building a dragon plane that can’t possibly fly using real world physics.
Tumblr media
So, Yugi and Co are going to California, and Seto is going to Season One.
And I guess Bakura was like ā€œOi! Loves! Is every body ready for me to murder them?ā€ and Gramps was like ā€œsorry, they’re getting murdered by Pegasus todayā€ and he was like ā€œbloody hell, every time.ā€
Anyway, if you just got here, this is a link to read all these recaps from the beginning, in chrono order--it’s a lot of content, and I can’t believe I spent this much time doing this.
And because you’re curious, here’s the soap design that will get absolutely rejected by Royalty Soaps because they say they like to watch anime but they also pronounced ā€œGhibliā€ wrong like over 20 times on that one video so I have a strong feeling this is not their brand.

Gallery: Delta Green
Most of my RPG illustration work has been for Call of Cthulhu related projects. That’s the result of intention and good luck and accident.
The Intention part happened in the year 2000. I submitted some illustrations to the Delta Green website. Delta Green was a Call of Cthulhu RPG set in modern times – the late 199os. Most CoC games are set in the 1920s/1930s, the time the original stories were written and set. I discovered Delta Green in 1999 when I working at Half Price Books. I was the buyer when a customer sold us his collection of RPG manuals. In the buy was Delta Green and its sequel Delta Green: Countdown. I bought those books for myself. I loved the ideas behind the setting. It updated the Cthulhu Mythos for the late Twentieth Century in ways that surprised and delighted me. It created a means and a reason for investigators to, well, investigate the horrors from beyond.
I’d wanted to illustrate RPGs but didn’t have much of a portfolio of examples to show. I found the Delta Green site early the next year. I don’t think it had a way to send submissions and I don’t think they were asking for any. What it did have was a way to submit fan art and writing. So I worked up three illustrations (see the follow gallery) and submitted them. They got posted. No one from Delta Green contacted me.
Oh well.
Two years later those illustrations got me work at The Black Seal. But that’s another post.
#gallery-0-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The original photoshop files of these illustrations are, possibly, residing on an old back up drive. It’s formated for Mac and I currently use a PC so I haven’t tried plugging it in. A lot of the work I did in the first ten years of this century was done on a Mac. The art always started as graphite and ink on paper and then had photoshop magic applied to it. I’ve got the original drawings in big metal flat files but the art that got published looks different.
Earlier this year I realized that I’d sent most of those illustrations to the editors and publishers via email and I’ve never deleted any personal emails. So I’ve tracked down a lot of that older art and will be showing it in future galleries. I found the two black and white illustrations in the above gallery in my emails.
The first three images, however, I couldn’t locate in my gmail archive. AOL has long since deleted all my old emals. At first they didn’t appear to be on the current Delta Green site but, after doing some obsessive google searching and some sort of back door poking around on DG I found them in an archive. Huzzah!
Story Seed #54 The Time Line AntiDefense League
There are a lot of stories that feature some sort of organization whose mission is to defend the ā€œcorrectā€ timeline, to make sure that history works itself out the way that it is ā€œsupposed toā€. Bleah. How about an organization whose mission is to create timelines where history works itself out in the best ways for the most people?
Recommendation
Beeple. This person’s art started showing up in my tumblr feed, shared by other folks I followed. It was weird and creepy so I subscribed to his feed. He posts an image a day, every day.
Also, the Growing Up / Overnight Kickstarter concludes on the 30th. If you’ve been putting off backing it. please jump in.
Local News
Last week, in one of our stand up meetings at USPS, we were reminded that we, the letter carriers were not supposed to talk to the press. That if a member of the press attempted to engage us in conversation we were to refer him/her to management. Also, while we were in uniform, we were not to engage in political discussions with anyone lest they assume that our views represented those of the USPS. We were also to be careful not to express politcal opinions on social media in such a way as to lead people to believe that our views represented those of the USPS.
Sigh.
To be clear, anything I write here about my job at USPS is just my experience and my opinion. I like to assume that those of you who read these newsletters recognize this but, on the off chance you don’t, I AM NOT A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE POST OFFICE. I’m just a guy who works there. In my opinion, the USPS can’t actually have an opinion since it’s an organization. Organizations are not people. The people in charge of organizations may claim that their opinion represents the opinion of the organization but that’s just a fiction.
Anyway.
The most interesting part about the day job right now is that I have a new T6. USPS delivers mail six days a week. Regular carriers work and deliver theri route five days a week. A T6 is the person who delivers the route on the regular carrier’s day off. My last T6 had medical issues that prevented them from delivering my route on a regular basis. My new T6 is healthy and detail oriented. More detail oriented than I am, actually. And that’s good. It means I’m updating labels in mailboxes and doing maintenance on my route that I’d let slide. I keep most of my customer changes in my head. Having another person who has to regularly work my route reminds me that I should communicate customer changes in clear, written methods. It’s only polite.
We’ve also moved our start time from 7 am to 7:30 am. I’m not a fan but I’m adjusting.
I’ve left my alarm at 4 am. I get up. Drink coffee Write. Do computer art or make products in either my Zazzle or my Redbubble stores. I’ve updated my various websites to include a ā€œstoreā€ page with links to each. This week I spent most of my store time working on an Oz Squad collection for Zazzle. Oz Squad is Steve Ahlquist’s creature but, as a fan and sometime collaborator, I try to find ways to keep the brand active.

In the evenings, once we’ve finished dinner and our spot of television, I work on physical art. Right now I’m doing pirate sketches. More about that when the project can be talked about publically.
Thank you for dropping by. Remember that life has always been insane. Look out for yourself and your friends. That’s where sanity and security dwells.
See you next week!

I never realized how much I rely on seeing those ā€œYou’ve got kudosā€ emails from AO3 in my inbox every day until I stopped getting them. I can see the numbers on my stats page increase, but because Verizon/Yahoo/AOL (whichever one of those is the parent company) has decided to reject all mail sent from AO3 after AO3 updated their email servers, I can’t get any notifications/emails of any kind and it’s rather annoying. It’s even more annoying that AO3′sĀ ā€œsolutionā€ to this problem is for me to switch email providers.
