Unintended "Features" - Sometimes when we design components, they dont' always work as planned. In this case, the dropped brake mount for our aero gravel prototype that wasn't designed quite right. It went together beautifully and still works buuuuut when you need to change a wheel, you will need to dismount the caliper to get the wheel out. Inconvenient, yes, but we learned something and our new versions are rotated to let the wheel drop out freely during wheel changes. Well those transfer mugs are done! 🎉The transfers for the most part were fine. There were a lot of problems with clay/glaze fit (Super hubs and I opened the kiln in time to witness mugs just imploding 💥😱 I’m not gonna lie that was kinda cool!) Also one of the clear glazes I used caused the transfers to run like cra-cra! And some of my more reliable glazes just blistered on the new white clay🤷‍♀️.... def somethings I’m gonna need more testing on. Why I write about ‘how not to travel’

At 18 years old I was a university dropout, no real-life experiences outside my sheltered high school life and without a doubt I embodied the cliche “lost”. Battling an eating disorder after hopelessly injuring myself that I could no longer pursue my dream career, I hoped that travelling the world would help me find something I wanted to do with my life. These are unequivocally weak foundations for a young woman embarking on solo adventures into the unknown. Hence, my travels were full of near-death experience, loneliness and bad luck. Within the space of a year I had placed myself into to debt to fund travelling, been kidnapped by a ladyboy in Bangkok, nearly arrested in Cambodia and assaulted in the Maldives. As a young traveler I would look to travel influencers and bloggers for guidance, but in reality, they did not prepare me as a first-time traveler, rather depict an unrealistic portrayal of travel. My first solo trip I arrived in Malé (Maldives) expecting a tropical oasis as those I had seen in photos on the internet; endless white sand beaches and an abundance of tropical fruit. That is the first lesson I learnt what not to do while travelling; anticipating your expectations to be filled, in reality capital cities in third world countries are always bustling, dirty and dangerous. But once escaping the main island to a smaller atoll, I found myself in a place so perfectly placed between the ocean and the sky, a place that even if I let my mind wonder to its farthest reaches, would not have produced such wonderful sights. Not only were the landscapes something out of a dream, the people were equally as lovely. That was another mistake I made, I did not thoroughly research the culture of the countries before arriving, I had no idea I was being offensive when I wore my bikini on a beach where the majority of the beach goers were Muslim.  

That first trip not only uncovered a love for travel but also another import lesson; not to borrow money for travelling. Looking back now I would have given 18-year-old me the advice not to be so stupid to take out a personal loan for travel. A mistake not uncommon with younger travellers, it took me a nearly a year to pay back the money with extra fees and interest. As solo travel has become increasingly popular, especially with women. I want to share more of these lessons on ‘how not to travel’ to help other young solo travellers to not part take in the same mistakes I have.
