Bricktober day 14- Time Travel/Modern
@lesmis-prompts
People do you understand how much I love R & Jehan. They are amazing. Also when I discovered this fandom (in June my gods has it only been that long I've got 300 bookmarks of these idiots already) I thought '' hell nah I can't write les mis the fics are all so good and I'm not that good". Cut to-me on day 14 of a Les Mis Writing Challenge, with a hp crossover planned, the beginnings of an afterlife au, and So. Many. Documents. About. Them. ANYYYWAY ENJOY!
---------------------------------
Jehan sighs. Honestly, he is rather surprised something like this hadn’t happened sooner. With such friends as Les Amis and such roommates as Courfeyrac and Grantaire, you take your life into your hands daily. That being said, he really hadn’t expected to come back to Eponine, Gavroche, R, and Courf standing outside next to two slightly singed canvases, looking sheepish as their building burned.
Maybe a little bit of context might help. See, Eponine and Gavroche have been friends with R for years. He doesn’t know the whole story, but from what he’s seen and heard and the fact that more often than not the siblings are sleeping in R’s bed while he’s on the sofa, he can make a few guesses. So that explains their presence.
Jehan had had to leave early that morning for a lecture but neither R nor Courf nor Eponine had any classes, the lucky sods. So that left the three of them in close proximity with the chaos demon that is Gavroche. Obviously, something was going to go wrong. He just hadn't expected it to be this wrong.
He pulled out his phone and texted the Les Amis group chat. 'Hey guys, R, Courf, Gavroche, and Eponine have burnt down our place, we'll need somewhere to sleep tonight. Xxx'
Sending it, he walks over to his friends. “Care to explain what happened here?”
Courf winces. “Jehan! Dear heart! It- is really R’s story to tell!”
“You fucker.” R mutters, before beaming very widely. “Jehan! Fancy seeing you here, dear friend of mine!”
Jehan says nothing but raises an eyebrow.
R gulps. “Well- You see- Er-” He decides being deliberately obtuse is the best idea. “The building’s on fire.”
Jehan internally rolls his eyes, but keeps a stoic expression. His other eyebrow joins the first.
R casts around for something helpful. “I- well, you see- Ah! I rescued your notebooks!” He reaches behind him and produces a large stack of notebooks, varying in shapes and sizes. “And you keep your books at Ferre’s anyway! So everything’s fine!”
“Yes, R, but why did my notebooks need rescuing in the first place?”
R pauses, as if he hadn’t quite thought of that. In all fairness, he probably hadn’t.
“Ah. Well.. Eponine?”
“No. No, I am not being dragged into this.”
“Well, you were there when it happened, and you didn’t stop us, which is- er- makes you an accessory to the crime! Quod Erat Demonstratum and that?” Courf says. Eponine gives him the most deadpan look possible.
"Courfeyrac, I know you aren't quoting law at me. Because that would be a very bad idea, wouldn't it?” She asks dangerously. Eponine doesn't take well to anyone other than Cosette using laws to attempt to coerce her. After all, she knew the criminal justice system of Paris inside out by the time she was ten. Few in their friend group know law better than her.
“Erm-yes. What you said. Anyway, I agree with R, you should tell Jehan what happened.”
“I can do it!” Gavroche interjects, mischief clear in his eyes.
Instantly, three hands shoot over his mouth. “No, really, Gav, that won’t be necessary.”
“Actually, I think I would like to hear Gavroche’s version of events.” Jehan says. He knows that out of the four of them, Gavroche is most likely to tell him the truth, or at least something close to it.
“Are you quite sure?” R asks hopefully.
“Entirely. Gavroche?”
“Now, just out of curiosity, and bear in mind that I'm being generous here, how much would you consider a fair price for this information?" Gavroche enquires, business mode on. Jehan, unfortunately for him, is having none of it.
"Gavroche, the building is on fire. I have little doubt that you contributed largely to the fire in question. There are three people here who would, I am sure, happily let you take the blame."
R looks affronted. Courf mutters to Eponine "Damn, busted." She promptly kicks him in the shin.
Ignoring their antics, Jehan continues. "So why don't you tell me precisely what happened, hmm?"
Never let it be said that Jehan, finding his friend in possession of an Inspector for her step-father, turns down the chance to learn such skills as negotiating with criminals, par example.
"All right, but you owe me. See, R was painting and Ep was reading, so I was bored. So I nicked Courf and we went up onto the roof and experimented with the fire escapes. Then we decided that it was a night for marshmallow toasting, so we went back down and stole R's candles and mini marshmallows, as you do. Things were going well until R came out to join us. See, by this point Ep was asleep. So someone had the genius idea to paint something on her face."
"And that someone would have been.."
Gavroche points at Courf, who was currently fighting Eponine. She was winning.
"I see. Go on."
"So, basically, R went and got his paints. Only he tripped on-er-something that might have been left on the floor. Then-"
"Something that might have been left on the floor." Jehan says flatly, staring at Gavroche.
"Well- OK, something I might have left on the floor despite Ep telling me to move it. Does it matter?"
"Please, continue." Jehan states in lieu of an answer.
"Right, so R tripped and the paints hit the candles, which fell over onto the newspaper, which-"
"Hold up a second, there was newspaper?"
Gavroche looks at him like he was an idiot. "Yeah, else the wax would have gotten everywhere."
"Right. Of course."
"Anyway, the newspaper went up in flames, so the cupboard door caught on fire, the one with R's wine in it. So then there was a bang and everything went fiery so Courf grabbed the cat, R got your notebooks and his sketchbooks, Ep got R's current commission and I got his painting of Enj. Then we called the firefighters then you arrived."
Jehan thought through the explanation. In summary, it was everyone's fault but mostly Gavroche and Courf's. So technically he should be a bit mad. Although R had got his notebooks, which was nice. (he already kept his books at Ferre's in case of a scenario like this). "Why did you get the painting of Enjolras?"
Gavroche looked over at the painting in question. "Ah, well, because R's hopelessly in love with Enj and I have it on good authority that Enj feels the same, only neither of them will say anything, so when Enj and Les Amis comes he'll see the painting and maybe realise. Also it's really pretty and R would have been sad if it burned, even if he didn't say so."
"Whatever he's been saying, Jehan, it's all rumour, scandal, and lies!" R shouted across.
"Gavroche, if that works I will buy you a bag of sweets so big the sugar high will last for days." Jehan whispered.
Just then, there was a screech of wheels and Bahorel's van hurtled around the corner. It skidded to a halt, the rear doors opened, and Feuilly, Joly, Bossuet, Musichetta, Cosette, Combeferre, and Enjolras tumbled out.
Bahorel leaped out of the driver's seat and the horde rushed over. While they were all surrounding R, Eponine and Courf, Jehan noticed Enjolras staring at the painting. R noticed and went pink.
"So, last for days you said?"
"Uh-uh, it's not happened yet."
Before Jehan's very eyes, however, Enjolras practically dived across, pounced on R, and kissed him. There was silence.
R said something too quiet for anyone but Enjolras to hear, but whatever it was it made said leader kiss him again.
Only Courf wolf-whistling broke them apart.
Jehan laughed. "Alright, I'll take you to the sweet shop. Bear in mind that if you casually mention this to Ferre, he'd probably buy you a mansion if he had the money. After all, he's been dealing with a lovesick Enjolras for years."
"You reckon? Nice."

@purlty23 tagged me in This game and I'm super excited about it! (I tried to reblog the original post and just tack on but tumblr hates me)
Thanks Blue, this was so fun!
I'm tagging: @amara-among-the-stars, @mac-and-thefox, @littlemoon-beam, @divine-misfortune and whoever else also wants to expose their sins to the internet. Under the cut, because LONG.
Xena Warrior Princess - Passive Enjoyer Only passive because I was too young to be anything else. Barely counts, except that this show was my first real obsession so I have to include it. I dressed up as Xena for halloween when I was like…5. The pictures are incredible.
Good Charlotte - Mostly passive As is a trend with a lot of these, I wrote a little fan fic, and daydreamed a thousand scenarios, but never shared any of it. I was mildy obsessed with Benji Martin, but I didn't really get involved beyond that.
LOTR - Creative Enjoyer The first fan-fic I ever posted on the internet (I was twelve, people were mean). I didn't make any friends within the fandom. But I was so determined to write for it that I had an entire novel planned out--that eventually became an original book idea instead.
Harry Potter- Mostly Passive I read a lot of HP fanfic, but not as much as others. I didn't get involved in online conversations. I did dabble in writing some fics that I hid from the world and never finished.
The Boston Red Sox - Creative Enjoyer Ok. Now you know why I said I was exposing myself. Look I was like 12-14. My best friend and I filled entire notebooks with our MANY chaptered fic that spanned the entire 2004 Red Sox Season, that we started the day they won the world series that year. We hand wrote it all, I transcribed it into my computer where it still exists somewhere. It was our EVERYTHING. And it has never (and will never) see the light of day. I may have posted some Red Sox fic on the internet in my Live Journal days, and I made a bunch of online friends within that community, but they never saw THE fic.
Rammstein - Creative Enjoyer Again, my best friend and I had a notebook with a long form rammstein fic in. We didn't go as far with this one. And I didn't get involved in any online communities. Though, our love for Rammstein lived a lot longer than our fic writing did.
Twilight - Creative Enjoyer In that I wrote and posted a single fic about Alice.
Lost - Passive Enjoyer. I read a billion Skate fics. Probably thought about writing my own, but I don't think I ever actually did. Was obsessed with this show until the last season. I still have never seen the last episode.
Vampire Academy (THE BOOKS) - Passive Enjoyer. Not a lot online. Read some fic. Was so obsessed with this book that I started to write a fanfic where we got to see some of the story from Dimitri's persepective and accidentally created and entire new plot and new characters and accidentally created my own CHILD of an original novel because of it.
Grishaverse (Shadow and Bone/Six of Crows/Rule of Wolves) - Passive Enjoyer Loved these books. Loved every single character. Read as much fanfic as I could find. Accidentally spoiled a death in one of the books with fanfiction.
Avenged Sevenfold - Creative Enjoyer Short lived. Read some INCREDIBLE fics on the basically defunct site Mibba and thought "I can do that" and was fighting for my life in college. Wrote a few chapters of a fic. Got decent feedback. Got bored immediately.
Supernatural - passive enjoyer Read some fic. Took me like 15 tries to actually get through the whole show. Adored it, never went very far with it.
Marvel (Specifically The Winter Soldier) - Passive Enjoyer. I should have been a creative enjoyer, but was too afraid to write anything or put myself out there. (I spent all of my time after high school/college thinking that fanfic was a waste of time and I should never write it because I needed to be serious. What a waste). Still mildly obsessed with BuckyNat. I adore Bucky and Black Widow. If they put out another good movie I could see myself falling down that rabbit hole and actually letting myself land. The trailer for The Winter Soldier changed my brain chemistry (nevermind the whole move).
Fallout 4 - Passive Enjoyer I could read Sole Survivor/Paladin Danse fics every day forever. I know that's insane. Stop looking at me like that.
Ghost - Creative Enjoyer. Finally allowed myself to write whatever the fuck I want and have fun with it and it has changed my entire fucking life. Wish I'd done it sooner. So glad I got to do it now and with all of you. ♥

20 questions for fic writers
Tagged by @bbcphile 🥰🥰🥰
1. How many works do you have on AO3? site says 21! (I also have 50+ on ff.net from when I was younger, and uhhh idk how many that I shoved into my dreamwidth/livejournal never to see the light of day again.)
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 619,848
3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently Mysterious Lotus Casebook! (Although I might sneak something for Love and Redemption or Scum Villain.) I am mostly a writer in the Final Fantasy XIII fandom, although I have spent years in Code Geass and Merlin fandoms. Before that, it was Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, Harry Potter, and Star Wars.... loads more.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Leave Me Your Starlight, Code Geass fic Nunnally-centric time-travel fix-it
Five Minutes, FFXIII fluff oneshot featuring Noel and Hope
World Enough and Time, Code Geass AU post-apocalyptic rewrite
First (and Second) Impressions, FFXIII modern babysitting AU Noel/Hope
Lost in a Moment (lost in a song), Mysterious Lotus Casebook post-canon fix-it casefic
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I try to! I'm, um. I'm really bad at it. In that I will attempt to respond to everyone in the first few days, but then I get distracted doing/writing something else and I am so tunnel-visioned that you won't hear from me until a week later and then I feel bad about taking so long to respond. Also I am very, very bad at responding because while I love love love seeing comments, it's just happy reactions and incoherent noises from me. How do I words to translate my appreciation???
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? ...probably everything I wrote as a kid? I have very different ideas on angst nowadays, but I guess while I was writing it... between Gedächtnisse (FMA fic) and Sound of Silence (HP fic), I guess!
Newer stuff might be between The Other (FFXIII fic) and Test Subjects (FFXIII fic).
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I write a lot of fluff pieces nowadays! But overall, probably Something About December (FFXIII fic), since it's a Christmas fic or Family (FFXIII), which was written to give Sazh more support in the third game.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Once, someone pointed out my join date on the website and asked me why I was still writing fanfiction.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I have, but generally don't. Even most of my ships are closer to gen than not. I'm closer to the repulsed spectrum of ace, but I do like attempting to write all sorts of things.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? Yes! Love them! I've written a good handful-- but the craziest one was when I was... 10? 11? and I wrote Orions'Ka on a notebook and when I typed it up, it was well over 60,000 words. It had absolutely everything I loved back then.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not by a person, no. By website bots, yes.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I have had... people ask me if they could translate my fics? My answer is always yes, but I don't recall seeing it anywhere.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? I had an entire online journal with my best friend back in middle school.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship? ...MXTX ships, maybe? I don't feel particularly strongly about ships most of the time, only about characters, who I will ship around for the fun of it. But for MXTX pairings, that just doesn't feel right. They just belong together.
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? ....my old Harry Potter stuff, I'm sorry. Not a fandom I got back into again.
16. What are your writing strengths? I've been told it's characterizations! And descriptions.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Everything else. Confidence, I guess. Also energy and interest. And once I overcome those, plot.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? ...me, or fics that do that? Because I've seen fics do that, full on paragraphs of dialogue in the original language but descriptions in English, and I don't understand. But if it's just... an important word, a statement, something the fandom would normally understand kept in its original language because there's just no good translation in English for it, then it absolutely works. Some things don't translate well, and fans usually like learning more about their canons. I personally try to keep things mostly in English nowadays, though, but I slip time to time.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Star Wars. I was in the single digits age, and wrote an introspective ficlet on Luke and Leia's feelings about how the original trilogy's ending, sitting together on Endor to watch it all burn.
20. Favorite fic you've written? ...I don't know if I have one. I either tend to be proud or hate what I've written, depending on the day, my mood, wind speeds, and cats. Currently I want to say Lost in a Moment, because I finished that recently and I had so many doubts about it so I'm proud I got through it.
Tagging... omg, anyone who still follows me all the way from FFXIII days and writes, or all the way from the Gundam Wing days gosh.
but also @seventhstrife, @rhystheceo, @teekettle, @adriannasharp @tunnelofdusk 🤭 ya'll suffer through my random selection because I know you guys are writerssss

Top 5 favorite hyper fixations you've survived.
Jesus Christ, did I actually survive them though is the real question.
1. Harry Potter.
I know. Just, I know. I left the fandom a long time ago but boy oh boy was I neck deep. I had so many notebooks full of unpublished fanfic. I brought American wizards into HP before JK was doing it 😤. Also, not enough people wrote Ron Weasley right and maybe that’s what I’m trying to rectify with Eddie, who knows.
2. The 10th Kingdom.
I used to watch this mini series, all 9 hours of it, every single night during a summer in HS. The third disk would end and I would immediately put the first disk right back in. I think this may have been a first foray into reader insert fanfic for me but I didn’t have a name for it yet so it was maybe an OC, who knows 😂. Wolf is still my go to guy though. You know this, we’ve had this convo before.
3. Fight Club.
Both the book and the movie but the book came first for me. I got it handed to me in 2004 during home room and then that and Choke were my whole personality at 14. Woof. But yeah, I was so into this shit but weirdly not in a dude bro ‘no man, Tyler Durden makes a lot of sense’ kind of way. Just more of that like, be free do your own thing.
Okay these next two I haven’t left the fixations, they come and go pretty frequently, but I’ve come out of them unscathed (so far).
4. Star Trek.
I don’t talk about it much but Star Trek is like so near and dear to me. All its iterations, all its characters. It’s never let me down (I won’t let it) and it’s got like, endless possibilities. Like I finally started watching Strange New Worlds and it’s just so good?
5. Star Wars.
I don’t need to say much about this. It’s Star Wars. I love villains, I love Jedi, I love random clone troopers trying their best. Has this fandom helped me realize my dream of turning a basement into a cantina? Yeah, it has. Has it taken just so much of my god damned money? Again, yeah. Am I mad? Actually yeah, a lot of the time, have you seen this fucking fandom? Whatever I’m having fun making my Barbies kiss and that’s all that matters.

Backmarket has *excellent* computers- I bought my hp laptop from them for a little under 400- 16gb ram, i5 with a 256 SSD hard drive. Here’s one that’s a year newer for, I kid you not, a couple hundred bucks. Runs zoom like a dream, and the browsers are all great. Has a fingerprint scanner if that’s your thing, and it has a backlit keyboard. I bought this guy last year and it still runs like a dream! They have some other excellent picks as well if you have the money to get something newer. Do also look at the GHz for the processor- anything below a 1.5 ish should be a no-go.
So You Need To Buy A Computer But You Don't Know What Specs Are Good These Days
Hi.
This is literally my job.
Lots of people are buying computers for school right now or are replacing computers as their five-year-old college laptop craps out so here's the standard specs you should be looking for in a (windows) computer purchase in August 2023.
PROCESSOR
Intel i5 (no older than 10th Gen)
Ryzen 7
You can get away with a Ryzen 5 but an intel i3 should be an absolute last resort. You want at least an intel i5 or a Ryzen 7 processor. The current generation of intel processors is 13, but anything 10 or newer is perfectly fine. DO NOT get a higher performance line with an older generation; a 13th gen i5 is better than an 8th gen i7. (Unfortunately I don't know enough about ryzens to tell you which generation is the earliest you should get, but staying within 3 generations is a good rule of thumb)
RAM
8GB absolute minimum
If you don't have at least 8GB RAM on a modern computer it's going to be very, very slow. Ideally you want a computer with at least 16GB, and it's a good idea to get a computer that will let you add or swap RAM down the line (nearly all desktops will let you do this, for laptops you need to check the specs for Memory and see how many slots there are and how many slots are available; laptops with soldered RAM cannot have the memory upgraded - this is common in very slim laptops)
STORAGE
256GB SSD
Computers mostly come with SSDs these days; SSDs are faster than HDDs but typically have lower storage for the same price. That being said: SSDs are coming down in price and if you're installing your own drive you can easily upgrade the size for a low cost. Unfortunately that doesn't do anything for you for the initial purchase.
A lot of cheaper laptops will have a 128GB SSD and, because a lot of stuff is stored in the cloud these days, that can be functional. I still recommend getting a bit more storage than that because it's nice if you can store your music and documents and photos on your device instead of on the cloud. You want to be able to access your files even if you don't have internet access.
But don't get a computer with a big HDD instead of getting a computer with a small SSD. The difference in speed is noticeable.
SCREEN (laptop specific)
Personally I find that touchscreens have a negative impact on battery life and are easier to fuck up than standard screens. They are also harder to replace if they get broken. I do not recommend getting a touch screen unless you absolutely have to.
A lot of college students especially tend to look for the biggest laptop screen possible; don't do that. It's a pain in the ass to carry a 17" laptop around campus and with the way that everything is so thin these days it's easier to damage a 17" screen than a 14" screen.
On the other end of that: laptops with 13" screens tend to be very slim devices that are glued shut and impossible to work on or upgrade.
Your best bet (for both functionality and price) is either a 14" or a 15.6" screen. If you absolutely positively need to have a 10-key keyboard on your laptop, get the 15.6". If you need something portable more than you need 10-key, get a 14"
FORM FACTOR (desktop specific)
If you purchase an all-in-one desktop computer I will begin manifesting in your house physically. All-in-ones take away every advantage desktops have in terms of upgradeability and maintenance; they are expensive and difficult to repair and usually not worth the cost of disassembling to upgrade.
There are about four standard sizes of desktop PC: All-in-One (the size of a monitor with no other footprint), Tower (Big! probably at least two feet long in two directions), Small Form Factor Tower (Very moderate - about the size of a large shoebox), and Mini/Micro/Tiny (Small! about the size of a small hardcover book).
If you are concerned about space you are much better off getting a MicroPC and a bracket to put it on your monitor than you are getting an all-in-one. This will be about a million percent easier to work on than an all-in-one and this way if your monitor dies your computer is still functional.
Small form factor towers and towers are the easiest to work on and upgrade; if you need a burly graphics card you need to get a full size tower, but for everything else a small form factor tower will be fine. Most of our business sales are SFF towers and MicroPCs, the only time we get something larger is if we have to put a $700 graphics card in it. SFF towers will accept small graphics cards and can handle upgrades to the power supply; MicroPCs can only have the RAM and SSD upgraded and don't have room for any other components or their own internal power supply.
WARRANTY
Most desktops come with either a 1 or 3 year warranty; either of these is fine and if you want to upgrade a 1 year to a 3 year that is also fine. I've generally found that if something is going to do a warranty failure on desktop it's going to do it the first year, so you don't get a hell of a lot of added mileage out of an extended warranty but it doesn't hurt and sometimes pays off to do a 3-year.
Laptops are a different story. Laptops mostly come with a 1-year warranty and what I recommend everyone does for every laptop that will allow it is to upgrade that to the longest warranty you can get with added drop/damage protection. The most common question our customers have about laptops is if we can replace a screen and the answer is usually "yes, but it's going to be expensive." If you're purchasing a low-end laptop, the parts and labor for replacing a screen can easily cost more than half the price of a new laptop. HOWEVER, the way that most screens get broken is by getting dropped. So if you have a warranty with drop protection, you just send that sucker back to the factory and they fix it for you.
So, if it is at all possible, check if the manufacturer of a laptop you're looking at has a warranty option with drop protection. Then, within 30 days (though ideally on the first day you get it) of owning your laptop, go to the manufacturer site, register your serial number, and upgrade the warranty. If you can't afford a 3-year upgrade at once set a reminder for yourself to annually renew. But get that drop protection, especially if you are a college student or if you've got kids.
And never, ever put pens or pencils on your laptop keyboard. I've seen people ruin thousand dollar, brand-new laptops that they can't afford to fix because they closed the screen on a ten cent pencil. Keep liquids away from them too.
LIFESPAN
There's a reasonable chance that any computer you buy today will still be able to turn on and run a program or two in ten years. That does not mean that it is "functional."
At my office we estimate that the functional lifespan of desktops is 5-7 years and the functional lifespan of laptops is 3-5 years. Laptops get more wear and tear than desktops and desktops are easier to upgrade to keep them running. At 5 years for desktops and 3 years for laptops you should look at upgrading the RAM in the device and possibly consider replacing the SSD with a new (possibly larger) model, because SSDs and HDDs don't last forever.
COST
This means that you should think of your computers as an annual investment rather than as a one-time purchase. It is more worthwhile to pay $700 for a laptop that will work well for five years than it is to pay $300 for a laptop that will be outdated and slow in one year (which is what will happen if you get an 8th gen i3 with 8GB RAM). If you are going to get a $300 laptop try to get specs as close as possible to the minimums I've laid out here.
If you have to compromise on these specs, the one that is least fixable is the processor. If you get a laptop with an i3 processor you aren't going to be able to upgrade it even if you can add more RAM or a bigger SSD. If you have to get lower specs in order to afford the device put your money into the processor and make sure that the computer has available slots for upgrade and that neither the RAM nor the SSD is soldered to the motherboard. (one easy way to check this is to search "[computer model] RAM upgrade" on youtube and see if anyone has made a video showing what the inside of the laptop looks like and how much effort it takes to replace parts)
Computers are expensive right now. This is frustrating, because historically consumer computer prices have been on a downward trend but since 2020 that trend has been all over the place. Desktop computers are quite expensive at the moment (August 2023) and decent laptops are extremely variably priced.
If you are looking for a decent, upgradeable laptop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:
14" Lenovo - $670 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD
15.6" HP - $540 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD
14" Dell - $710 - 12th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD
If you are looking for a decent, affordable desktop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:
SFF HP - $620 - 10th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD
SFF Lenovo - $560 - Ryzen 7 5000 series, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
Dell Tower - $800 - 10th-gen i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
If I were going to buy any of these I'd probably get the HP laptop or the Dell Tower. The HP Laptop is actually a really good price for what it is.
Anyway happy computering.

Dell Inspiron 14 Plus (7441) Test

Laptop for Students, Freelancers & Content Creators There are different types of Laptops available to buy in the market. Whether you are a student, freelancer, content creator, or video editor, you can get a laptop from Star Tech for your demand. The most common types of laptops are listed below.
Notebook Notebook is another name for a full-sized laptop. They are well-balanced in portability & functionality. They range from low-budget laptops to high-budget gaming laptops & Business series laptops.
Ultrabook Laptop The main difference between a Notebook and an Ultrabook is in its size. Ultrabooks are smaller versions of Ultraportable laptops. The name Ultrabook is given by Intel. These laptops have a high level of security like hardware-level Anti-theft protection. Ultrabooks offer the best portability and robust performance in an extremely thin, ultra-light form. These are perfect for users constantly on the move.
MacBook Apple’s Macbook laptops have two main variants. The ultra-thin Macbook Air & the high-performance Macbook Pro. They both use MacOS. Recently all Macbook Air & Mac mini PCs use Apple’s M2, M1 Max, or Pro silicons. MacBooks are exceptionally convenient for graphics-demanding tasks like designing and rendering. Apple’s Operating System offers the easiest user interface that never lags, and is super secure.
Chromebook Chromebooks are cloud-storage-based Laptops that run on Linux based Chrome OS operating system. They are popular for being cheap laptops for students. Some corporate groups also use these budget laptops.
Gaming Laptop Gaming laptops usually pack a high-clock speed CPU, gaming motherboard, dedicated Graphics Card & hi-powered air or liquid Coolers. They support a variety of gaming accessories like RGB lighting, Gaming keyboard & mouse.
Buying a Laptop in 2024 When purchasing a laptop, consider some factors for the best performance. While most of these factors are technical and related to performance, personal preferences also come forward. Technical specs like the CPU, GPU, RAM, & Display are most important. Personal preferences can be the portability, casing material, ports, and cooling solution. These factors can bring the best value for your money, so check before making a purchase.
Processor The processor or CPU is the first thing to pay attention to when purchasing a laptop. The number of cores and clock speed indicates how fast and efficient a processor is. Besides Intel and AMD laptops, MacBooks use Apple’s M1, M2, and A16 Bionic silicon chips. Core i7, i9, Core Ultra 7, Ultra 9 and Ryzen 7 & 9 processors are ideal for tasks like video editing, & intense programming. Core i5, Core Ultra 5, or Ryzen 5 are highly popular for the best value for money. Laptops with Core i3 and Ryzen 3 serve as the best laptop CPU for everyday workloads in the office or classroom.
Display Students will benefit most from a small, 13 or 14-inch laptop. Business professionals and executives need a laptop that can display documents and presentations perfectly while being lightweight. For them, a 15-inch size is best. Gamers and users with creative demands should get large-screen laptops for a perfect experience. Most laptops offer a minimum HD (720p) resolution, but we recommend a minimum Full HD (1080p) screen for all types of work.
Material All the components of a laptop stack together in a thigh shell called a laptop casing. Commonly a laptop casing is made of metal or plastic. Plastic casings are very light and easily carryable. An aluminum finish laptop, on the other hand, offers both portability and sturdiness. Metal finish is also considered to offer relatively better cooling for the heating parts.
RAM Random Access Memory (RAM) processes the data for the CPU to use. With more RAM you can keep more programs running. Memory-hungry, large programs, and games need more RAM for easy data transfer. Consider at least 4 GB RAM even on a budget laptop. For intensive tasks like video editing, graphics designing, or 3D modeling, you need at least 16GB RAM. But a minimum of 8 GB of RAM is a must-have for a good laptop. Most RAMs use DDR4 and DDR5 technology.
Storage You can either get a cheaper Hard Disc Drive or HDD which supports from 120GB up to 18TB. You can also use a faster solid-state drive or SSD that supports 120GB up to 100TB. An SSD can be plugged in by either a SATA interface or the typical 2.5” HDD. Also, there are M.2 SSDs with NVMe technology. An NVMe SSD is unimaginably faster than a typical SSD. Regardless of the type, any SSD will give a significantly faster boot time and operations. A great way to cut the cost is to have an HDD for larger storage, and a small SSD dedicatedly to the Operating System.
Battery Any laptop should carry your productivity for a full day of use. For this, you need a laptop with enough battery backup. Expect at least 3-4 hours of browsing and heavy working time on a single charge. For light work, this will extend to up to 6 hours. More cells in the battery will give more backup but will add to the weight. Ultrabooks are a great solution for impressive configuration, and very lengthy battery backup despite being thin and lightweight.
Connectivity WiFi 6E is the latest WiFi standard that gives faster internet over WiFi. For secondary display, HDMI is a must. USB Type C and Thunderbolt are also important for connecting mobile devices and Smartphones. For speedy transfers, look for more USB 3.1 ports. Besides, an SD card slot is a treat to move files fast from your DSLR, Drone, Action Cam or other devices without a card reader.
Upgrading Laptop RAM, Storage, and Graphics Card To upgrade your laptop RAM, HDD/SSD, or Graphics Unit in the future, you have to know if those parts are upgradable. Most laptops can be upgraded with faster RAM and SSD. A 2.5-inch SSD or HDD plugs into the regular SATA III port. If you want an even faster NVMe SSD, your laptop should have an M.2 port. When upgrading laptop RAM, check for free RAM slots and the specified BUS speed. A Laptop’s GPU is usually soldered on the motherboard and can not be upgraded.
