I think for a lot of people it has to do with the fact that James appears to be the leader of the Marauders, at least from the snippets that we get from their childhood. The rivalry is shown to be primarily between James and Snape from the get go. In their initial interaction on the train to Hogwarts, James is the first to harp on Snape and make fun of him. In “Snape’s Worst Memory” Sirius points Snape out, but the bullying mainly comes from James. In both of those interactions, even though Sirius is an active participant, James takes charge, making Sirius very much a follower, less so an instigator. The same goes for the so called “prank.” There, even though Sirius is the one who sets Snape up and almost gets him killed, what really gets to Snape is the fact that James, the person he point blank hates the most (justifyably so, in my opinion), gets to be hailed a hero, even by Lily who tells Snape he should be grateful. Again, whether it’s because Harry is focusing primarily on his father when viewing those memories or not, the interactions and the hate that we see as readers is mainly between James and Snape, taking the focus away from Sirius’s wrongdoing.

Another thing is that, however immature and selfish Sirius may act, we are made to feel bad for him. Whether he was physically abused by his parents or not (and we get no actual canonical evidence that he was anything other than neglected and yelled at by a crazy mother), Sirius always seems to get the short straw. He is imprisoned for 12 years for a crime he didn’t commit, with Dementors chipping away at his sanity. Even though he didn’t sell out the Potters, he bears all the guilt and responsibility because he feels as if it is all his fault for suggesting they switch Secret Keepers. Once he does get out, he misses his chance at freedom by Wormtail escaping so then he has to be on the run, feeding off of rats and scraps for over a year until the Order is reformed. And then still, he is confined to his most hated place in the world, listening to his mother scream at him constantly, left to stew in his guilt and helplessness until he dies, killing Harry’s last hope of escaping the Dursleys and having a parental figure that truly loves him. Amidst all of this, we do get brief flashes showcasing the animosity between him and Snape, but it fades compared to the hardship Sirius is experiencing. We are presented with all of this, shifting our focus away from his flaws or at least justifying why he is the way that he is, which is something Snape doesn’t get until Deathly Hallows.

I do agree with your friend, however, that Sirius is an equally flawed character who does deserve criticism. The reason we don’t descuss him as much as we do James is that anti-Snape people mainly use James to argue their points and since they do have Lily in common, and she is central to the books, the discussions mainly revolve around Snape, Lily, and James.

So I have a question.

My friend and I were having a conversation, and she isn’t a fan of Snape, she hates him. But she doesn’t like James either, her point is they’re both outright abusers and she is more a fan of the Weasley’s. Anyway, she brought up a very valuable point - why do Snape supporters have such a hate for James but not Sirius?

When I asked what she meant she said, “Well, whenever I see Snape support blogs, they always say that the torment he endured from the Marauders is what made him go dark, which I get. And then they all shit on James for being an abuser, but they’re all still doting over Remus and Sirius? Hell, even I do it. I can understand Remus love, he wasn’t that bad and he was suffering. But Sirius, he carried on the torment until the day he died. And he never gets shit for it. James didn’t get to prove that he would actually grow up and stop the bullying unlike Sirius. So my question is, why do people shit on James for bullying Snape, when Sirius was arguably worse?”

I simply don’t know the answer, when I supplied it was because Sirius had a rough home life she said, “He was emotionally deprived. He wasn’t abused. People milk it. Sirius was rebellious. In canon he was never crucioed, he might of been slapped on the cheek a couple times, but as far as I’m aware there’s no proof of it. So sure, mummy and daddy didn’t give him lots of cuddles and kisses, and they expected him to be a perfect heir. Its the same with all pureblood families, but I don’t see you accusing Lucius and Narcissa of being abusive and Draco would’ve grown up in similar circumstances.”

So, why does everyone love Sirius Black?

Life is too short to work in an environment that is mentally exhausting, emotionally draining, and sucks the life out of you on a daily basis. Quitting without something else lined up is not always the best way to do things, but sometimes, you just have to walk away. It’s the people who work at horrible jobs (for them and their personalities) because the job ‘pays so good’ and then, after spending years and years of their lives under all that stress and gawd-awful conditions, finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and then keel over just before they get to it. Quitting isn’t necessarily weakness. Apparently they were spotted in their matching robes by some fans at Universal Studios Hollywood in California on Sunday.

I dead ass just saw Pete Davidson in a Hogwarts robe at Universal Studios. I think he was with Ariana Grande.

Ariana hinted at the couple's Harry Potter date on Tuesday, posting a photo of her Slytherin sweatshirt on Instagram. According to a report from People, the two 24-year-olds "just started" a "very casual" relationship. Who could forget when Ariana hosted Saturday Night Live in 2016 and Pete asked her onstage if she wanted to "smoke some pot or something?"

According to People, they stayed in touch. They even seem to have matching tattoos!

Although Pete's post is the first to show the pair together, the couple has been commenting on each other's Instagram posts in the most adorable, supportive ways.

Snape is the one that overheard the prophecy and shared it with Voldemort in the first place. I don’t think to him the prophecy meant anything other than a way to be useful to Voldemort and to prove that he belongs. So, and this is inference on my end, I genuinely think that he didn’t really think about the prophecy applying to a concrete person/family. The prophecy mentioned a child born in July to people who have opposed Voldemort thrice. If Snape had really thought about it, he would have surely realized that it could have referred to Lily and pushed Voldemort to consider the Longbottoms as being the ones mentioned in the prophecy, as an act of desperation to save Lily. We know that he was willing to do anything to save her, so he would have absolutely thrown the Longbottoms in Voldemort’s face if he had known that they are feasible tagets. Either way, he would have still switched sides because Lily would have come close to being killed regardless leading him to realize the error in his ways, but it I digress.

These details about his reaction also directly contradict his being “obsessed” with Lily. How is it that he did not know that Lily would be a target if he was so obsesssd and knew everything about her? The only explanation is that he didn’t keep track of her since Hogwarts which makes it kind of impossible for him to have been obsessed.

My problem with the argument that Voldemort went after both families is that it contradicts the text. Voldemort targeted the Potters as a response to the prophecy, which is what made it entirely self-fulfilling. I wish I had the books on hand to pull some quotes. He didn’t send the DEs to kill the Longbottoms as a response to the prophecy, they were Aurors and a part of the Order, so of course they were targets, but not in the way the Potters were once Voldemort decided that Harry was the one the prophecy referred to.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember the Longbottoms being attacked after Voldemort vanished as a last act of desperation/rebellion on the part of the DEs. I feel like somewhere in the book it mentioned Bellatrix and the other being caught later due to them torturing the Longbottoms.

I think Snape was nasty to Neville because from the very beginning we see Neville is clumsy and Snape has absolutely no respect for him. This is inexcusable, of course, but there are a couple of ways that I tend to interpret it. He sees Neville as a liability and wants to scare him into doing either better, or at least less damage, which is a very real tactic used by teachers, even now in 2019, like the teacher in the classroom next to mine. Not to the extent of name-calling, but still, I don’t agree with the method.

The other interpretation is that Snape is a depressed and angry man with a shitty life who has no control of his life or future and he sees Neville as weak-willed and pathetic so it makes him feel incrementally better to be able to take out his anger and depression on someone who cannot fight back, or he just can’t help lashing out to someone he considers weak. Either way, I don’t agree with his treatment of students, but I certainly understand, as it is very well explained in the books what brings him to this point.

I feel like canon has become diluted by headcanons and fanfiction. The entire argument by @poetry-by-a-slytherin is all suppositions and some details, like the things I discussed above, are directly contradicted in canon. I do, however, enjoy the respectful tone of the discussion rather than the name calling that usually takes place when Snape is brought up.

Do you think Snape knew about the prophecy and therefore knew that Voldemort could have choosen to go after Neville and if he had, Lilly would still be alive, and that’s why Snape tortured Neville so much?
