Reflection 11
It’s been a crazy few weeks! I missed my weekly update due to the holiday weekend, but I accomplished quite a bit in that time. I decided to omit the Voice module due to time constraints. I chose this module because the concepts within this module can be found in all three of the other modules. The idea behind “Voice” is to encourage students to educate visitors and kamaʻaina alike with aloha (which can be found in the Hawaiian Culture module). This concept in combination with the ways to “tread lightly” and care for our land (which can also be found in the Natural Resources module). Through their class discussions, the concepts of “Voice” are already integrated into the lessons, therefore I felt it might also be seen as repetitive.
Since my last update, I was able to complete the resources, about, and contact pages. I also created a footer. My biggest hurdle these last few days were the adjusting for responsiveness. I didn’t realize that the images weren’t translating to different screen sizes until I tested my website on another computer. While I did account for bugs I didn’t anticipate allocating this much time to it. Another big issue I ran into was when my site had a “fatal error.” Wordpress alerted me of this error and I had to troubleshoot to figure out how to get it up and running again. There were several steps I had to go through to resolve this by changing my site settings and in the end I have to revamp my main Modules page. The table I was using caused the main issue so I had to delete it and find a new layout. Even the footer gave me issues. For some reason the global themes page wasn’t working and I had to create a second footer from scratch.
The other issue I ran into was creating my illustrations. While I did mockups of my website, I didn’t anticipate the fine tuning I would need to do and the multiple revisions I would have to make. Overall, each page took hours of fine tuning, especially the modules. Even now, I’m still testing and tweaking here and there. I probably should have documented more of the issues, but I didn’t think about it until later. Instead, I've attached one of my Illustrator WIP screenshots and a video of the mobile version. There is also a tablet version that I will try to upload later on as well.

My colleague James just wrote a massive piece detailing everything we did to drive a ton of sales from a recent webinar.Unfortunately, James is a big-time lurker, and doesn't have the karma to share it with you. But I do!I've read through this a few times myself and I think he's done a really impressive job in giving you a look behind the scenes when it comes to our webinar strategy.I hope you find this useful! There a quite a few (useful!) images in this article. If you don't already have RES, I'd recommend you go get it. :-)So this is the closest thing I've ever had to something worthwhile to put in this community.I'm head of inbound marketing for a tech startup in Vancouver, Canada, and 4 weeks ago our team met to discuss how we planned to meet our growth goals for Q4.One of the main things we talked about was webinars.I've always enjoyed the sound of my own voice, so I thought I'd give it a go.The webinar we ran, after a lot of trial and error, has driven more than 11k in sales, and I wanted to share how we did it. Not sure if /r/Entrepreneur will take the whole piece, so I may have to link at the bottom.Basically, this covers everything we did in the 4 weeks before going live with my webinar, "How to Increase Sales This Black Friday & Cyber Monday."4 weeks before the webinarWe started with a brainstorming session. Here's the questions we asked:1. What will our target market be interested in learning more about?- A webinar on Justin Bieber may get people to register, but those people wouldn't be particularly interested in buying your email software after the fact.2. What subject is related enough to your business that an offer related to it would be desirable?- Your target market may care about sales optimization, but if your business sells Wordpress themes, your post-webinar offer won't get a lot of interest.3. What do I know about? What am I a genuine expert in?- This one goes without saying. You are the primary reason people register. You need to have a demonstrable expertise in your webinar's subject matter to get them in the door.4. Can this topic be visually-represented? Does it have visual elements?- You talking without a slidedeck or screen capture gets boring fast. Choose a topic which engages your attendees visually.5. Will this topic stand out from the crowd in some way?- You're not the only business or marketer running webinars. Tie your topic into a current event, or put a spin on it (original research, perhaps) which helps you stand out from competitors.After throwing a bunch of ideas up on the board, we landed on one which we felt ticked all these boxes: Black Friday sales strategies: timely, interesting to our target market, and delivering strategies which attendees wouldn't have seen before.And, as important as any of those, this topic gives Wishpond the opportunity to show off the value of our software to prospective customers.The next step was planning:For project management, we use Asana. It allows us to see exactly who's responsible for each task, when that task is due, and (most importantly) to leave little notes for each other - some of which are even relevant to the task!Here's what the Black Friday webinar plan looked like:https://www.wishpond.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2018/10/Asana-plan.pngThis calendar dictated our responsibilities for the next few weeks.At this point the Wishpond marketing team separated to divide and conquer.Takeaway:Dividing and conquering is the only way to create a complete webinar campaign. Get your team together and assign responsibilities, and use Asana (or a similar project management tool) to organize it all.3 Weeks Before Going LiveHere's what we needed to accomplish three weeks out:Step 1: Complete the webinar landing page (needs to be done before we can start sending traffic)Step 2: Send a mailout to existing contactsStep 3: Research and decide on a webinar platformStep 4: Complete the website additions to direct visitors to the webinar landing pageStep 5: Complete and launch Facebook AdsStep 1: Create the webinar landing pageWishpond makes the creation of landing pages easy, and we're lucky enough to work for Wishpond. More fields will reduce conversion rate. Fewer fields, and you won't be able to personalize your follow-up emails.The countdown timer: Countdown timers increase urgency, and have shown to increase webinar landing page registration rates significantly. Wishpond's editor enables you to drag-and-drop a countdown timer just like this one.The "About your Host" section: You need to prove that you, or whoever is hosting your webinar, is an expert on their subject. "Why should I listen to this person for 40 minutes?" is a pretty serious question you need to answer.The "What you'll learn" section: After all, people need to know exactly what they stand to benefit from your webinar. Don't hide this.Step 2: Send a mailout to existing contactsThis was pretty standard. It came up several timesSo we looked into it, and absolutely love the platform.It's clean, affordable and the UX is awesome. I won't wax on about it, but yeah, it's a really solid tool. Check them out.Takeaway:You're not alone. If you have a question about anything to do with setting up a webinar (or marketing in general) there are thousands of marketers willing to answer. Check out Quora and Facebook communities.Step 4: Create website additions to drive people to your landing pageThis, like the landing page, is Carlo's wheelhouse.Website additions, like popups and welcome mats, are an awesome way to drive your website traffic to register for your webinar.He created a popup for the Wishpond blog as well as a welcome mat.However, we didn't end up using the welcome mat, as we determined it could hurt our website conversion rates).TakeawayDon't be afraid to kill your darlings. Creating these website additions took Carlo about half an hour. Having a tool like Wishpond makes it super simple, which means it's okay when plans change. If he'd committed a full day to creating and coding a custom welcome mat, we would have had a harder time throwing it in the trash.Step 5: Create and launch Facebook AdsThis was a mistake.We created the ad designs and messaging, created tests and launched nine Facebook ads.Then we sat back and watched. And the cost per registrant just kept going up.We paused the campaign, created new designs and re-launched. But we couldn't make it work. When we couldn't get below $35/registrant, we had to stop.We'd driven 11 registrants for $400.At our customer value, this wasn't profitable.If we're paying $35/registrant, and only 10% of registrants book a demo after the webinar, and our demos have a 25% subscription rate, we'd need a customer value of $1,400 to make it break even. And we don't have that quite yet.TakeawayIt could be our target market (marketers are notoriously expensive), but my thoughts are that you'll get more bang for your buck if you ignore ads and, instead, get webinar registrants from your website traffic or past customers (i.e. popups and newsletter mailouts).Have you made Facebook ads work for webinars in the past? How?2 Weeks Before Going LiveTwo weeks before going live, we needed to wrap up a couple things:Step 1: Compete the slidedeckStep 2: Write the post-webinar email seriesStep 3: Write the reminder emailsStep 1: Complete the slidedeckI use Google Presentation for every presentation I do. The platform is super simple, and I love the ability to share, co-edit, and add seamless transitions.TakeawayThere are a few things to remember when building your webinar slidedeck:- Include less text than you think. Honestly, go back over your slidedeck a few times and remove text. If you need text prompts, write out notes. Don't ask your webinar attendees to read while you talk.- Add transitions. This is especially relevant between paragraphs and lists. Show only one idea at a time.- Make your images as large as possible. You never know what resolution or screen your attendees are going to be on. Don't bank on them being able to see what you're talking about. Err on the side of massive.Step 2: Write the post-webinar email seriesOnce your webinar is over, you'll need to have a strategy in place to turn registrants into customers.We've found (in other campaigns) that a 3 or 4-email series is the best way to do that.Sent automatically, a real person will get involved as soon as someone replies to the email. Other than that it's completely automatic.Here are templates similar to the three emails we wrote:Email 1: Post-webinar essential infoThank you so much for a successful webinar!Even if you didn't attend, I wanted to send you the recording/slidedeck.Exclusive to webinar registrants, I'd like to give you a [X%] discount to [Your Business] until the end of the month.If you have any questions about anything in the webinar, let me know!Email #2: Webinar follow-upWanted to make sure you received my last email?We're offering a [X%] discount exclusively to webinar attendees until the end of the month, and I didn't want you to miss out!Let me know if you have any questions! Email #3: Won't keep bothering you I won't keep bothering you, as I haven't received a response and I don't want to clutter up your inbox.I did want to send you one last thing. By adding a single line of code to the wp-config.php file, you can proceed to increase your PHP memory limit. Here is what you need to script:

> php.ini: Access the root directory of your site by login in through a reliable FTP client and create (or open if it already exists) a php.ini file. You may be required to add the suPHP directive in the .htaccess file for these configurations to work. Simply access the file from the root directory and add the following line of code:

6. Folder Permissions:
Sometimes WordPress folder permission errors keep you from writing into the directory. Moreover, your WordPress site can be exposed to threats like hacking, malware, plugin issues, etc., that are messing with the permissions to accessibility.
To resolve this, simply navigate to the “/wp-content/uploads” file. Access the folder permission via an FTP client. You could also reach out to your WordPress host to ask them to check if everything is set up properly.
7. Latest Version Of PHP:

Content Management System
For my Content Management System assignment, I chose to use the Twenty Twenty-One theme created by WordPress. I created my child theme by following the instructional videos on Moodle, with the help of Atom and FileZilla along the way. First off, I changed the background colour of my WordPress site to a light pink colour, hex code #e2baba. I was able to do this customization in the Colors & Dark Mode tab in the child theme customizer section on WordPress. I decided not to add a background image as it would take over the entire background, and I personally liked the clean style of the site. I customised the menu section in my header to have four primary menus. These are Home, About, Blog, Contact. I will discuss these further below.
At the footer of my site, I have 3 widgets. These are Pages; i.e. the primary menu links, Latest Posts; with my 4 latest posts, and finally Socials; with a link to my Tumblr Blog, my LinkedIn and my email. I have one plugin running on my site, that is called Happy Forms and is located on my contact page.
I added additional CSS to have all h2 text white. I liked how this broke up the titles of the blog with the blog text. Additionally, I added CSS in the Additional CSS tab to have no text decoration, except for when the mouse is hovering over or it’s active. Unvisited and visited links are white, while hovering the mouse over a link will make it grey and selecting it will turn it black. I did not choose to change the font as I personally liked the Helvetica font that came with the twenty twenty-one theme.
In the home section, it is a static page. At the top sits my Name and Student number, which is also the title of my site and subtitle. To the right I have my custom menus situated to the right of the header. Beneath this I have the introduction to my site, “A Space for Web Authoring” in a white colour. Beneath this block I have placed a photo of myself with my name, student number and my location. This is enclosed by a black box.
Then, I have my latest blog posts in order from newest to oldest. Each blog is inside a black border box and they go from left to right, 3 across, from newest to oldest. I have cut them short, giving snippets of 50 words. If the blog post is over 50 words a white “Continue Reading” clickable link appears and this allows the reader to read the full blog post. I did not add feature images to the blocks as not all blog posts have images and I did not like the inconsistency of the feed if only some boxes had images.
In the about section, I have 2 short paragraphs about me in a white Helvetica typeface. Underneath, I have my favourite quote by B.J. Neblett. One difficulty I ran into was that although the block is a quote block, the block does not close the quote. It only has opening quotation marks, but does not add the closing quotation marks. Adding my own quotation marks does not match the opening quotation marks.
Moving onto the blog section, the blogs go from newest to oldest. The blogs have a h2 heading in white, with a short snippet of the blog post, followed by a “Continue Reading” link in white. Underneath, each blog post has a published date, as well as Categories, which are clickable and help in filtering content for readers of the blog. I did not add feature images as I did not like how some blog posts had images and some did not. I wanted a consistent feel to my blog section. In each blog post, readers can leave a comment on the blog article. Additionally, they can navigate to the next or previous blog post. I put all of my images in the blog posts in a black box to frame the images nicely. Finally, in the contact section, I have my HappyForms plug-in that asks the user for their name, email and what they would to send me.
In terms of challenges I encountered during this assignment, I had some difficulty in uploading images to my media library. I was continually receiving the following error message: “Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2021/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”
After some research, altering permissions and creating new folders in FileZilla, I finally was able to upload the images for my WordPress website. Other challenges were having
the correct password for my site, as my password was changed by Griffith College and I had to reach out to retrieve a new one. Overall, it was an extremely enjoyable assignment.

What is a script?
So, we have said that the memory limit is a per-script based setting. Now, what is a script?
A script is simply a written command or a written computer language that says the program what and how to execute. That is, the script sets the boundaries and is also the executioner. You need not compile a program every time you want to run it. Instead, you ask the script to do so. Since scripts are written codes, they are also easily editable. Scripts are run in 2 ways. One is on the server side, while the other on the client side. Most websites now a days uses both to optimize performance and also increase dynamism and functionality.
PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python, etc., are server-side scripting languages. This means that when you access a website, it runs the script on the hosted server and then displays the result to you. There is also client-side scripting language like JavaScript. Actually, JavaScript is used on both the server side and the client side. You may ask why is the website eating your resource by running it on your computer? Well, this is also to increase efficiency.
JavaScript is used to show interstitial objects on the screen, also to play web-based games. Running the script and sending the result back and forth would eat away a lot of time. Typically, scripts are open-sourced, and so users can view them and edit them! Pro tip: Right-click on any webpage and click on Inspect. Not a Storage Space

Why Keep this limit?
You might ask why to keep such limits after all! It’s not like the server has only that little RAM or memory! Why not straight up fix it to the extent of the memory the servers have. You must not forget that the website’s objective is to allow visitors a seamless experience.
If your code is too bulky, even the visitors will also face issues. They will have a hard time loading it on their pc, which will also affect their performance. So, WordPress typically sets the limit to 32M. Then, if that memory catches up, WordPress automatically increases the limit to 40MB if you have one site or 64MB if you have more than one. PHP has made drastic improvements with its new releases. While the PHP 7.3 is 3 times more efficient than 5.6, the options to view the Memory limit has haven there from the old version 5.2. Simply head over to the WordPress dashboard. Then from the “Tools” menu, find “Site Health.” From thereon, scroll down to the Info section. There you will find the “PHP Memory Limit” line. Next to the line is the numerical limit.
How to Fix it
Option 1: Increase through the PHP.ini file
You can straightforwardly increase the PHP Memory Limit when you are given access to edit the PHP.ini file. Most modest Shared hosting servers don’t usually give you such entry to the PHP.ini file. However, some servers let you build a copy of PHP.ini in your own site Directories. Then, the data/values will take the place of the default PHP.ini values.
For this, simply create a “php.ini” file in your directory where the WordPress site is. In your created script, just add the line, “memory_limit = 128M,” increasing the limit to 128MB. Now, do not worry if you fear that the main file will lose all the data. The newly created one can only change values that are in the original one. It can’t affect the command lines.
Option 2: Change the Limit through wp-config.php
This is another easy method and a risk-free at that. It is understandable if you do not have access to edit the .ini file or if you do not want to edit such sensitive files. In such cases, you can increase the limit by editing the wp-config.php file. Add the line ‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT,’ ‘128M’, and thus, your limit is 128 MB.
Option 3: Modifying the .htaccess file
You usually won’t find the .htaccess file in WordPress, even though it is a must for raw coded sites. However, if you have activated the .htaccess file for a reason, maybe for a “301 Redirection,” you can use it to increase the memory limit. Just edit the file and add the command line “php_value memory_limit 128M” in the .htaccess file to increase the limit to 128 MB.
Option 5: Talk to the Hosting Service Provider
There is a good chance that your web host has limited the memory usage to a point, and no matter how you change the limit from WordPress, the sites can’t just access the needed memory. So, you should contact the service provider and ask them if they have done so. Work out a deal that might benefit you with the increased memory, or look for a better web host and opt for a private server.
