Last week was National Moth Week. According to @vtecostudies and @inaturalistorg the Vermont Moth Blitz 2020 yielded 2922 observations, and recorded 560 species in one week! Over 260 people participated, #citizenscience at work! This Hummingbird Clearwing showed up in the Museum's pollinator garden just in time to be counted. #moth #letsworktogether #hummingbirdclearwing #hemaristhysbe (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDMF-pCBPyd/?igshid=10n2z3axfngmy

Ok so, this something that we saw a few days ago in the Logophilia Garden. Take a close look. Is it a bird? A bee? A lobster?! Introducing, the Hummingbird Clearwing, This extremely intriguing insect is a kind of moth, sometimes called "hummingbird moth" or "flying lobster". We were so thrilled when we heard "flying lobster" for that is exactly what we thought at first impression. This moth should not be confused with the hummingbird hawk-moth of Europe. The one we saw is most probably the hemaris thysbe, although there is a small chance that it may also be the hemaris diffinis. The Hummingbird Clearwing is meant to be found in Canada and the United States, and we are pleased to know that others have spotted this moth in India (one sighting reported in 2013 in Bangalore). It is a migratory species, capable of traveling long distances. Typically the moth is olive green and burgundy on its back, and white or yellow and burgundy on the underside. Its wings are transparent with a reddish-brown border. 2017 © Logophilia Education Pvt.
