I went snorkeling today! I saw lots of fish, including the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a! (AKA the reef triggerfish!) the picture isn’t mine, by the way.

I also saw lots of yellow tangs…

Sergeant fish…

Parrotfish…

And lots of other fish!

This was definitely a successful adventure in my opinion!

My family goes to Hawaii almost every year, and we like to snorkel, so this was kind of inspired by that. It’s a turtle with a coral reef and some Hawaiian fish. 

This is one of the pieces where I actually tried to pick patterns that fit what they were making up, and for the coral, the patterns actually were the things, which I really really like!!

 Probably my only regret with this piece was that I used two greens on the turtle instead of leaving some parts of it white...the patterns in the hexagons on his shell, and his legs are actually all different, and very intricate, but you can’t tell because they blend together...

The lagoon triggerfish is also known as the Picasso fish – an apt name for its bright colors. 

These beautiful reef-dwellers are found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including in Hawai‘i. This one was spotted in Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

The Hagley Library is going tropical this Travel Tuesday with these postcards from the Waikiki Aquarium, which were acquired by Pierre S. du Pont and his wife Alice during a 1920 trip to Honolulu, Hawaii.

The humuhumu fish at the lower left is the state fish of the Hawaiian islands. It is also known as a reef triggerfish, but its full name in Hawaiian is humuhumunukunukuapua'a, which translates to “ “trigger fish, nose, nose like a pig”. It also shares this name with a modern gin-based tiki-style cocktail, for those of you that are ready for some pau hana time. These images come from the Hagley Library’s P.S. du Pont photographs (Longwood) collection (Acc. 1969.002).
