Hunter x Hunter Chapter 391: Clash Pt 2; The Return of The King.

Intro/Disclaimer:

I know most people who follow this blog either know me from twitter or just have seen my Jujutsu Kaisen Metas, so you may or may not know about my passion for Hunter x Hunter (not to mention my love for Togashi in general), so I just want to fully disclaim that it is my favorite manga of all time and probably my favorite fictional story in any media. The thing about Hunter x Hunter for me that makes it so amazing (to be brief lol) is the structure of the storytelling combined with the world and characters that drive it. So for these metas, you’ll be seeing me talk about all types of random or maybe even irrelevant details to you, but to me- is necessary to my understanding of the story. So with that being said, bare with me... I hope you enjoy. 

Straight back to it..

It was obvious from the title of chapter 390 that this chapter would be a direct follow up from where we picked up last with the succession war and it did not disappoint. The three new characters we were introduced to in 390 (Zakuro, Lynch and Hinrigh) were brought into the story in a very cool way and seeing a follow up to their bold introductions was cool but more so because of Hinrigh’s badass ability. However, seeing Zakuro’s blood splatter on the wall crawl away to do recon for him was incredibly creepy yet satisfying to see. Its an interesting way to show the versatility of his ability outside of it hanging out of his neck as an extension of himself. I love how Lynch messing with one of the drops was Togashi’s way of showing what the ability could do, leading Zakuro to mention their span of 30 to 40 minutes. Its those key details and points given through the characters to expand on abilities without narration thats really cool. I love that stuff. 

In terms of Hinrigh, I knew he would be very dangerous but the use of his ability is fantastic. First and foremost, he is a very smart guy. Seeing him come to his own (correct) conclusions about the situation with Morena and the rebellion was great. Love how smart HxH characters are, and I love how its flows with the dialogue. On top of that, he uses the cameras to track down the woman that works for Morena, then takes the camera and turns it into a damn cat. A cute ass cat. Then presses record. His ability is so practical, and I am truly curious about the conditions of his ability. Before we saw him use money with New Script on it to turn their guns into snakes, but with the cat he just used his hands. I wonder if the animal/organic object is based on the size of the item he is transforming. The idea of handcuffs being turned into pigeons while flying around like sentinels is very cool. So to me it shows he can control the pigeons’ flight in the direction he chooses, meaning he can control the function of both the organic and inorganic part of the object. A very nasty ability (that I would love to see Chrollo using hehe). 

Hinrigh vs Morena’s Soldiers

The fight between Hinrigh and the three Morena soldiers was a one sided battle but it showed multiple things; 1. As established in the previous section, a glimpse to how powerful Hinrigh is, 2. How lackluster and hotheaded Morena’s soldiers can be and 3. There will be an all out war on Tier 3. 

I already talked about the first point above, and I want to see more of what Hinrigh can do before breaking down his ability any more. So onto the second point: How lackluster Morena’s soldiers were. Hinrigh pointed out he believed that the killings on the tiers were some sort of training for these new nen users through moron’s power. 23 of them exist so far, and we just formally met 6 of them total. The first guy’s ability was a very weak willed conjurer ability.

Henrigh even pointed in out when the guy initially attacked, and I love that because it reflects how ignorant these people are to nen. No proper teaching, no principles Their levels reflected this as well, but I still found it astonishing to see. It makes me wonder how many are in the higher levels and just how strong they are. Will we run into some naturally talented people who have really crazy abilities? I do hope so, because I would like to see how dangerous Moron’s people can get. 

The third point is the war on Tier 3. If you have forgotten, this is the Tier Morena is on and also the Tier where Leorio and the doctors are stationed at. Since the Heil-ly family vs Xi-yu is the surface of this conflict with the spiders following right behind, I can guarantee Tier 3 is about to become a pure battlefield. The way Hinrigh was attacked in front of regular civilians is the proof that the Heil-ly do not care about their surroundings. They want blood and they are going for it, but since Morena is backed by the fourth prince, I am sure he will hear about whats going on and might try to enter the fray to test out his newly learned Nen skills. Not to mention if Hisoka IS on this Tier.. will Hinrigh find him first? I honestly hope so because I would LOVE to see that fight. My money is on Hinrigh (lol). OR maybe Zakuro and Lynch will find him first, but I feel like Hinrigh will be the one to do so, if he doesn't have his hands full chasing down “that woman”.

About Hinrigh’s ability specifically, I need to see just how crazy and technical he is going to get with his ability. Thats another reason why I would like to see him fight Hisoka, or even Chrollo honestly. Hinrigh’s boss (Onior Longboa) is trying to keep the spiders in check by making them wait until Hinrigh can find Hisoka first and I hope that backfires and we see Hinrigh fight Chrollo and get his ability stolen. Thats one of the things we never seen Chrollo do while in battle so if he finds a way to steal Hinrigh’s technique while fighting I would be on top of the world. 

(I could go into a break down about the guy Hinrigh killed but I honestly don't want to give him my energy lol, I believe his purpose was to show how mentally screwed Morena’s men are, simple as that.)

Waiting for more...

This chapter was a nice action chapter with a little dialogue to remind readers where we are in this part of the arc. It was perfect because it did not bombard people with information and people could enjoy the action. I think the rest of this “mafia war” will be just like this, but with certain chapters holding more relevant plot/lore info than others. 

I hope we get a lot of action in this batch of chapters. This is just the beginning of some crazy plot points about to unfold on the boat and I am more than ready for it. Lets see what crazy plot pieces Togashi will bring to us!

Last Time on Hunter x Hunter

New HxH chapter is out but it’s been quiet at least among the fans I know... it seems because no one remembers what happened last time.  :P

Probably this would be a good time to go back to the HxH subreddit because I bet the redditors are loving this chapter dedicated to mafia flunkies fighting each other using absurd powers and are digging up their old reference charts and theories and putting them up on the wall like Pepe Silvia as we speak. 

(It’s Zhang Lei, BTW.  Zhang Lei will win the succession war.  And Sakata is the Silent Majorty nen user, working directly for Zhang Lei or possibly for Onior on his behalf.  Although if 8th prince Lazurus won the succession war with the help of the Spiders that would be a pretty good plot twist.  You heard it here first!  )

Ahem.  Anyway here’s your recap of what’s going on in the manga currently... spolers ahead!!!!

There are three mafia groups based on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th tier of the boat:

Hei-ly Group (Tier 3, under 3rd prince Tserreidnich but gone rogue(???))

The Hei-ly group on Tier 3 are going around murdering people with the nen abilities Morena gave them, with a goal of causing chaos and overturning the entire hierarchical system.    @aspoonofsugar wrote a really great essay for hxhladieszine about Morena’s nen ability and goals BTW, which you can read here:

Morena’s on the cover of the next HxH volume set to release in November, so the next set of chapters might be all about her attempted revolution! 

Xu-Yu Group (Tier 4, under 4th prince Zhang Lei (the buddha-looking one)  

The Xu-Yu group on Tier 4 are lead by Onior, who we found out previously is Zhang Lei’s real father!!!  They’re the largest mafia group and as such, dedicated to the preservation of the status quo.   Currently they’re teamed up with the Cha-R mafia group to find Hisoka and stop Morena. 

  Cha-R Group (Tier 5, under 8th prince Lazurus (the pot smoking one))

The Cha-R group on Tier 5 are the weakest mafia group, but they’ve made an alliance with the Phantom Troupe (specifically Phinks, Feitan and Nobunaga) in exchange for helping to locate Hisoka, and with the Xu-Yu mafia group to stop Morena.

Anyway as the currently conflict is between the Xu-Yu mafia underboss and some of Morena’s lower-level flunkies, the Spiders don’t make an appearance in this chapter. 

I liked it though, the nen abilities were interesting, there’s a lot of detail in the panel backgrounds showing how crowded it is in the lower decks, and like @hxhhasmysoul​ pointed out it’s kinda funny how the chapter opens with graphic murder and that creepy blood-manipulation ability (and a nod toward the need to recap the plot, EXPLICITLY DENIED) before pivoting to a kitty camera and some pigeon handcuffs.  That’s the kind of absurdity we like to see in our manga.

Look all I have to say is that I think turning doves into hand cuffs is nuts of a symbolic statement. It haunts me like a dream I can remember. I want to comission art about this.

Also I called it: a new character will introduce a new nen dope ass nen power and then immidiately die. I would even argue the power is a masterwork of characterization. It cleanly explains his world view: he can only view his hands as tools for extended or specific violence, his only will could be harm. It's this limitiation of perception that makes him both the first to engage and the first to die.

Meanwhile Hinriegh personifies tools: cameras are patient and observant, guns are fickle and deadly, but doves and handcuffs? It makes my head swirl.

NEW CHAPTER

I am.. I cant EVEN OH MY GOD ANYWAYS

If you dont even want to hear or see anything of the new chapter i dont reccomend looking as I’m gonna talk about some things during this chapter, things that could happen after this chapter and things from clash pt 1 (ch 390).

But anyways...

This was probably my favorite part. Lynch and Zakuro have such a good dynamic im crying I cant have yet another duo in my head but yet here they are.

Seeing them again in general in a new chapter was just magical in and of itself. like dude. THEYRE BACK  . AND ITS REAL AND WOW...

“HOW CAN I GET IT TO DIE?” I LOVE LYNCH SO MUCH HELP SHE IS JUST SO BLUNT AND AND ANWYAYS.

I also love the introduction to another aspect of Zakuros ability and just the sheer amount of personality both of them have been given in the short amount of time they’ve been introduced. 

And like how does Zakuro know who Hisoka is? Do they even know??? I’m guessing that their funky little blood pellets won’t find Hisoka, but will instead find a phantom troupe member.

Give me a minute to see where everybody was the last time Togashi showed the map. (I’m hoping they’ll find machi bc... machi fan reasons)

Theyre all on teir 3 (Zakuro, Lynch, Hinrigh) in a food/shopping court, then Zakuro and Lynch go into a hallway somewhere, but other than that I dont know.

Ok, so if Machi stays in teirs 4/5, then it’s unlikely that she’ll come across Zakuro and Lynch.

I think there could be 3 things that could happen:

1. They may run into more Heil-Ly associates such as Luini or Cashew, but Hinrigh is already kind of dealing with those people. 

Maybe Hinrigh will run into Luini and Zakuro and Lynch will run into Cashew or vice versa. Depending on how their ability works and the descriptions they were given, Zakuros ability could very well mistake somebody else for being Hisoka, as they’re just looking for anybody ‘suspicious’.

2. It would be interesting to see if the Illumi = Hisoka theory could come into play. Zakuro and Lynch are hunting down Hisoka, but what if they run into Illumi instead because Zakuros ability spotted him and recognized him as being Hisoka... Though I think Mizai and Botobai intervined this in previous chapters. The lockdown was lifted, so there’s a possibility that Kalluto and Illumi could have been released, but iirc we haven’t gone back to their perspective since.

3. Chrollo, Bonolenov, and Shizuku are at the bottom of the fourth teir, but aside from Illumi and Kalluto, they are the closest members of the troupe. Since they’re both hunting down Hisoka, a matter of things could happen. I doubt that they would want to team up, and instead, I feel like tensions would be made, as the troupe’s (specifically Chrollo’s) interaction with the Cha-R group (I think) at the dining hall wasn’t very amicable, and the associates even noted that they were trouble. Chrollo seems to REALLY want to be the one to kill Hisoka as well, so I can imagine he would have mixed feelings on two people he has no idea about looking for him, and possibly looking to kill him before he does.

Any way it goes, I can’t wait for the loose threads in the storyline to be actually tied.

Anyways, enough of going into that part of the chapter, I want to talk about Hinrigh’s ability now.

At first, tbh I didn’t think that I would be very invested in Hinrigh, but this chapter saved my opinion because like.

HIS ABILITY IS SO FREAKING GOOFY LIKE. HE JUST MAKES A CAMERA INTO A CAT AND THEN PUTS ‘EM ON “RECORD MODE”. It’s so silly but in all seriousness what an amazing ability. It’s so convenient, and the fact that he can make full on animals out of everyday animals is pretty astonishing. Imagine the type of training and how much of it you’d have to do to master that ability. 

+ The cat is so scrunkly i love it so much I would die for the RECORD MODE cat. It reminds me of those videos on youtube where the people put the cameras on the cats collar. I wonder if that was the inspiration for this, because a cat isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of recording or having another pair of eyes or whatever, and I wouldn’t put it past Togashi. Our man full on made an ability (Silent Majority) out of a song name, and put in facts about the weight of bowling balls just because he likes to watch bowling.

I also like to think that he just makes companions for when he’s alone on the job. Like he makes a dog out of a machine gun and bonds with it and if somebody tries to attack him because they think he’s distracted he’s like “aha!!!” and shoots them with his machine gun dog.

I cant wait to see the next chapters, even though I doubt they’ll be for free on viz, I’ll find another way to see them. I’m so excited to be experiencing the comeback of my favorite series!

First time Togashi posted on twitter, he was on chapter 397, page 6. It took five months from that post (May 24 - Oct 23, 2022) for chapter 391 to be published.

Today, he posted chapter 405, page 5.

He has mentioned several times that he is continuously working to find the best system to make his manga. The system for 391-400 was not as efficient as he wanted, but seemed optimistic in his 401 post. This, combined with his Sailor Moon reference about healing means he may be feeling better and/or has figured a better system.

If we just add two chapters to his previous rate, we can guess that we see Chapter 401 this November (~six months). However, depending on his current system, back pain levels, and other possible events, it could be before or after that who knows.

Other facts for the timeline I guess:

Chapter 400 was completed on November 22, 2022

Chapter 401 was completed on March 9, 2022.

In between 401 and now, he posted this "Start Over" tweet on October 1, 2023, "Start Over" being a reference to the song by Sakurazaka46, used in this official video

His father passed away in November 2023

Hey there! I just found these preview pages from volume 38, though I'm not sure what they say and if they're legit. Wondering if you've seen them as well?

These first pages usually show the characters that are going to be in the volume. What stood out to me is that Gon is there as well! Now, from a quick translation from the internet, it basically says that he's unable to see aura and he's on a homecoming (?) trip. Then on the bottom there is a synopsis on what has happened so far in the manga. Does this mean we'll see Gon in the upcoming chapters? I'm trying to not get my hopes up but...

So, you may already know this, but I want to make it clear first that Volume 38 will only contain chapters that have already been released (391-400)--so Gon definitely won't be appearing in the chapters collected in Volume 38. These are the chapters we got back in the end of 2022, before Togashi went on the hiatus that will be ending in October. Typically the previous 10 chapters are only collected into a volume and released around the same time more chapters are about to come out, so that's why this volume is only being released now.

Also, Gon has been listed in the character summary page throughout the Succession War arc as far as I recall, so, it's nice that he's still included but it unfortunately isn't a change from previous volumes, where he also never appeared.

While Gon being on the cover was a welcome surprise that I'm very happy about, I don't think either it or the character introduction page are strong signs of his impending return. However, Togashi clearly doesn't want us to forget about him, and is reminding us that he's still one of the main characters of the series, so I think it's a great sign for the series going back to him over the longer term!!

HxH is very unpredictable, so Gon could technically return at any time, whenever Togashi deems the story has come to that point. However, with how many characters and plot points are being juggled in Succession War, I personally am not anticipating his return particularly soon. We could get a cameo or small scene or something, but I don't think there's a lot of space to go back into his character arc quite yet. I think we may still need to wait a while before he's part of the story again, but I do think it's coming at some point--perhaps at the end of this arc, or when the story does a major shift.

Gon does have ties to the Dark Continent, with Ging and his presumed ancester Don Freecss being both being connected to it, and Killua does as well, via Nanika, so I think when the Dark Continent itself becomes more prominent in the series, it's possible we'll see them return to the story. But as usual, it's hard to predict what Togashi has up his sleeve. I am confident we'll see them again, though, and all the focus Togashi has put on especially Gon this year (with all his tweets of art of him, this cover, etc.), I'm sure Gon will be back when the time is right!

A Possible Future Based On Hisoka's Fortune - HxH Predictions

Hunter x Hunter Chapter 105 (Raw)

"A red-eyed customer will visit your store. Half of them is angel, and the other is the god of death. Presumably they are hoping that you will sell the moon's secrets to them. They ought to be especially pleased about that of the frost moon.

On a hot day, with the mediation of the said customer, the two of you, the man of a reversed cross and you, are probably to be left alone together. The false fourth moon will be torn away from the calendar. With this, those that remain will become 6."

I'm gonna put it here to remind us all of Hisoka's real fortune.

We all know how Shalnark ended up dead according to the fortune he received back in Yorknew arc. Now everyone is paying attention at Shizuku's fortune and making predictions. One of the most popular of these theories is how Shizuku will die around merchandise covered in black, which are brought by the Kakin mafia or one of the princes, if I remember correctly.

So now, I shall make my own predictions on what will happen in the future HxH chapters. But this time it will be based on Hisoka's real fortune.

WARNING: IF YOU HAVEN'T READ HUNTER x HUNTER CHAPTERS 349 TO 400, ESPECIALLY 391 TO 400, DO NOT INTERACT OR READ FURTHER. Keep in mind that this is unedited, and you are bound to read some cringey parts at some point.

First Stanza:

As Hisoka accepted Hinrigh's offer of going to VVIP room at tier 1, he's currently on his way there. The only one there who is described as a "red-eyed customer will visit your store. Half of them is angel, and the other is the god of death" is Kurapika, who is, at present, the bodyguard of 14th Prince Woble and Queen Oito.

At some point, they will meet again. They have to. There is no way that Hisoka will not go to the next banquet nor snoop around and find out what's up in the said tier. He will be there and his encounter with Kurapika for the first time since Yorknew arc is inevitable.

"Presumably they are hoping that you will sell the moon's secrets to them."

With Hisoka's presence in tier 1, Kurapika won't be able to help but wonder what happened to the Phantom Troupe, especially Chrollo, after Kurapika and the main gang left Chrollo, Hisoka and Pakunoda on top of the cliff/mountain (pls my brain isn't cooperating right now, somebody remind me), in the middle of nowhere.

Kurapika will definitely ask Hisoka about the Phantom Troupe. Presently, he wants to know about them and, obviously, he will get curious whether they are in the Black Whale or not. Remember, the Phantom Troupe is also his target, but obviously more secondary as 4th Prince Tserriednich is his first and foremost target as of this arc.

Kurapika will definitely find out that they are onboard the ship, and in all probability, Hisoka will let him know about it. After all, wouldn't Hisoka want to form an alliance again with Kurapika?

"They ought to be especially pleased about that of the frost moon."

I believe Hisoka will reveal something about the frost moon with Kurapika.

As you know, the frost moon refers to #11 of the Phantom Troupe. Back in Yorknew arc, they were referring to Uvogin. But he died. He even got a tombstone-less tomb and a requiem on the night of the underground auction. So, how is frost moon still relevant to this arc?

Well, sucks for you, but the one who replaced Uvogin is none other than this man:

Illumi Zoldyck.

With the way he is acting at the moment and how he divulged his assassination deal with Hisoka is making him super suspicious. There has been so many theories about him being Hisoka and so on because of how sus he is at the moment.

Though the theory about him being Hisoka has been debunked as of the current available chapters, you cannot deny that this is not merely just a "kill me and my engagement ring to or prenup with you is that you get paid". There's something more going on here.

I predict that he and Hisoka are on cahoots with each other. Surely, Hisoka had a deal with him, but I think it's more of helping him destroy the Spiders from the inside and so Illumi can save Kalluto from Hisoka's murder plan.

If it is true that Hisoka and Illumi are working together because Hisoka asked him to just like in Yorknew and Illumi can save his younger sibling, then Kurapika will be pleased. Because that's less spiders he has to worry with, considering that he also has to get closer to Prince Tserriednich to take back the remaining scarlet eyes, while also helping Queen Oito and Prince Woble survive the succession war.

Second Stanza:

I am mostly onboard with the prediction that Kurapika and Hisoka will come up with some sort of agreement regarding the Troupe. Kurapika already has too many things in his plate regarding the succession war with the remaining princes and how he will get close in contact with Prince Tserriednich. It won't come into surprise if Kurapika asks Hisoka for a helping hand or accept Hisoka's offer of his own kind of alliance, which I think he would do just like in Yorknew. But I think this time Hisoka will warn him not to remove Chrollo's nen. xD

Hisoka will perhaps help him take out some of the members. I feel that he will go for Shizuku and/or Bonolenov first. They are currently with Chrollo, so perhaps with Kurapika's help or someone's help, Chrollo can get separated from them, and then he can kill Shizuku and Bonolenov right then and there.

But we can also take into account that the closes Spiders to Hisoka right now are Nobunaga, Phinks, Feitan, and most likely Franklin and Machi. He can go for one of them first, as well. But I really feel like Shizuku and Bonolenov will die and I'll explain why in a short bit.

And of course, the one I'm most excited about is the showdown between Hisoka and Machi. I'm so ready to witness the best tragic romance of all times

Later on, Kurapika will maybe help him get another chance to be alone with Chrollo in return of him getting rid of some of the Troupe members. The ship is on the way to the false Dark Continent right now, so maybe he can set up a place there where Hisoka and Chrollo can face off. And it will be hot on that place on that day.

But it can also be that because of Kurapika, Hisoka and Chrollo will be alone together in the Black Whale ship, whether intentional or not. But how can it be a hot day in a ship, especially later when they can no longer go out of the premises due to the unpredictable travel conditions?

When the whole ship is in chaos and on fire. Now that will be wild, but not impossible.

"The false fourth moon will be torn away from the calendar."

In Yorknew arc, the false fourth moon was Hisoka, the former #4 of the Spiders. His allegiance to the spider was never true and he was willing for the existence of the Spider to perish.

But the one to replace him was Kalluto Zoldyck, the youngest member of the famous Zoldyck family.

As of now, it looks like he is getting along with them, and based on chapter 377 and 380, he has found some sort of comfort with them.

I mean look at Kalluto sitting near Machi, whom I previously analyzed based off of her speech language as someone considerate to kids.

And how she is reacting when Illumi revealed to Mizai about everyone in the Phantom Troupe onboard the ship.

Even so, how can Kalluto be a false fourth moon?

Because he is a Zoldyck.

At some point in the current arc, he will have to choose between the Zoldyck family and the Spiders, considering the fact that Illumi is most likely in cahoots with Hisoka, who is trying to kill the Spiders and have a rematch with Chrollo, perhaps.

And he will definitely choose the family. Because before he is a Phantom Troupe member, he is a Zoldyck. Knowing the dynamics of the family and all of that, I think he will have no choice but to choose his own biological family over the one he found some comfort with. Thus, he has always been a false fourth moon, just like Hisoka.

I really think that if this will be the case, then we have a big potential or two when it comes to exploring the dynamics and relationships between the founding members. We have already witnessed the tension and conflict between the founding members when Chrollo was kidnapped by Kurapika back in Yorknew.

So this time it'll be interesting if we see it once again. And it'll be better if six of them are alive, but Chrollo is alone with Hisoka and they are far away from the other five. It'll be another dilemma for them once again. Do you save Chrollo or do you live on and keep the Spider alive?

And it'll be more interesting if the other people's predictions that the Hei-Ly family had something to do with Sarasa's death and the six founding members finds out about this and ends up being face to face with the benefactor.

These two events can tie into the Spiders' backstory a lot with the former possibly igniting or making them recollect the strong bonds that existed back on that day in the forest and the latter resolving the grudge and guilt they have been carrying since childhood.

Also, having the six founding members dying at the same time or together can be melancholic and sorrowful. A tragic and sad ending, but which provided them resolution and catharsis.
