Observation: NASA targets kids with latest MARS Rover announcement.

Why: Space for the millennial generation was a distant imaginary dream dominated by movies and other science fiction outlets, now there is a far different attitude towards space travel and how realistic it is. Using imagery and tone that kids are open to will increase the passion for science and broaden the imaginations of the kids who will grow up with space travel being more of a reality than a dream. Doing this will increase the NASA brand and possibly the diminished budget that they receive from the US government.

Future: Many more scientists vying for seats in space travel. Space ethics will opening up a whole new world of thought that we have yet to understand. - BR

Ethical Veganism Ruled a Philosophical belief

Observation: Ethical veganism is a "philosophical belief" and so is protected in law, a tribunal has ruled for the first time.

The landmark legal case was brought by vegan Jordi Casamitjana, who claims he was sacked by the League Against Cruel Sports because of his ethical veganism.

Why: Ethical veganism qualifies as a philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010 by satisfying several tests - including that it is worthy of respect in a democratic society, not incompatible with human dignity and not conflicting with the fundamental rights of others.

Cadbury’s goes vegan.

Observation:

Known for its Dairy Milk Chocolate bar, Cadbury is the second-largest confectionary brand in the world. Cadbury announced that they have been working on a plant-based milk chocolate for the part two years and they finally confirmed they will be doing a vegan Cadbury Dairy Milk bar.

Why:

Brands are acknowledging the move towards health conscious plant-based diets amongst consumers. Cadbury’s is a 200 year old company whose roots lie in the traditional confectionary and dairy industry but their is a growing trend towards veganism and in order to stay relevant, innovation with plant-based alternatives is key.

Future:

More mainstream and traditional companies developing a health conscious approach to their products. Whether this be more meat and dairy alternatives, companies will need to start acknowledging the growing consumer base who don’t eat animal products.

Global Tennis exhibition and historical impact

Future: The more we progress and look to the future we will constantly look to the past for inspiration and motivation.

Observation: For the first time in Africa, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer faced each other for a friendly exhibition match in Cape Town. Apart from breaking the world record for most attended tennis match, the friendly exhibition match also started a historical conversation about the history of the sport in South Africa among people of colour.  

Why: When historical sporting events happen in South Africa, we tend to look at how far we have come as a nation and those who have been marginalised by the sport. Another example is when Siya Kolisi lifted the Webb Ellis Cup, the history of rugby in the Western and Eastern Cape was the topic of conversation. This was also evident when Themba Bavuma became the first African to score a century in a test match, which sparked a lot of conversation around the history of cricket in the township of Langa.

Money is staying in the hood.

Observation:  More and more night joint is coming up all over South Africa’s locations. Taverns are becoming less relevant because of the rise of top-notch night joints. 

Why: With VIP areas, sky lounge areas, strick security, and affordable drinks. These establishments allow the middle class to splurge in luxury with the joy of getting more for less. Places like Ace, Rands, and Umzolies attract tourists with the a cultural unique vibe comfort of your hood. People who live in the hood  don’t have to go out of their way to have a good time. These establishments support local artists and bring them closer to potential black investors.

Future: These establishment help develop the community by having the infrastructure done.

I Love You - Man!

Observation: There is a growing number of people in society that are encouraging cis men to be in touch with their feelings and emotions. Subsequent to that, these men are able to  work through and voice their experiences. This has been extremely empowering, especially for communities that are deeply rooted in traditions and cultures that rule with an iron fist. Unfortunately, where toxic masculinity is the order of the day!

Why: Our increasing accessibility to information through various digital platforms has been the vehicle for this. It has had enormous influence in exposing most communities to healthier ideologies on how to raise the boy child. This not only creates a ‘new normal’ but also promotes a heightened level of freedom through expression.

Future: The traditional perceptions of what masculinity might transform into normalising gender fluidity. Especially with the growing influence spearheaded by the LGBTQ community. Their mere existence and tenacious ability to embrace who they are might continue to liberate others.

EFF misreads sentiment

Observation: Unusual for them, the EFF have grossly misread nations emotions. After the World Cup final The Peoples Bae Mbuyiseni Ndlozi insulted the team and suggested they are all colonialists. The clapback on twitter was intense and angry, including followers of the EFF.

Following on from this Julius Malema himself came out in vocal support of Burna Boy, after he agreed to come perform in SA saying that he was welcome here.

Twitter again came for the EFF leaders furious that someone “of the people” would support someone who had said such antagonistic things about “our country”

Why: The EFF are no fools, and maintaining an anti colonial rhetoric fits in with their communication, however it can’t be ignored that despite what we are constantly told by politicians and media South Africans really like each other and want to celebrate together. Having one of our leaders talk sour grapes during a moment of celebration was never going to go down well, especially considering the leaders, and heroes of the event were black men.

Future: Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is a very astute politician and he’ll have learnt from this lesson and will most likely be seen with the Springboks in a photo op sometime soon. Julius will continue being and doing Julius, doubling down he’ll most likely do the photo session with Burna Boy to continue antagonising his own supporters/

The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air Is Back

Observation:  Will Smith launches a new clothing line that capitalizes on his roots as the Fresh Prince.

Nineties fashion is back in style, with brands ranging from Reebok to Champion bringing back looks from that decade.

The limited-edition collection, which is available exclusively on Will Smith’s website, is only available until October 14

There are also some designs that scream maximalist ’90s fashion, full of cartoon drawings and clashing fonts.

Why: Nostalgia continues to be a strong theme within pop culture as society looks back on times, experiences or content that make them feel safe and happy.

Welcome to Vape Town

Observation: Despite almost universal derision and shaming, (shhhh, maybe it was big tobacco who decided to make vaping lame?) multiple vape shops emerge on a weekly basis in Cape Town. Many within a few shops of each other, Long street for instance has 4 shops within a 200 metre walk.

Why: Vaping is a gateway activity seen as relatively harmless, there is literature coming out that its not good for you. But that has rarely stopped people from engaging in dangerous activities in the past. Its something a non-smoker can get into for the flavour, CBD and THC vapers are emerging from the hemp and marijuana communities who no longer wish to inhale burning things.

Vaping is far more appealing to the health conscious millennial audience, and a growing trend in the USA for young people starting to vape. Vaping also creates a community around the activity, people sharing flavour profiles and artistic smoke blowing skills.

Depending on which vape store you go to, but many are high quality, the experience is flawless. Elegant counters, passionate shop assistants  and a wide range of flavours.

Future: Vaping is only going to grow, especially if health concerns are alleviated. Regardless, its an activity with a growing market and with the change in marijuana laws, Vape shops will be prime locations to start selling THC oil as soon as its legal. - BR

SA’s first 100% biodegradable takeaway cup and lid.

Observation:  Vida has rolled out the first 100% biodegradable takeaway coffee cup across all stores in South Africa. The takeaway coffee cup’s lining is manufactured from corn starch instead of plastic, making it biodegradable and compostable. The waste from these cups and newspaper is then used to make the takeaway holder. The sip lid is manufactured from moulded fibre.

The drinking experience is also better as the cups are double walled, meaning the cup sleeve is no longer needed.

Why: The conscious consumer movement is gaining traction and consumers’ purchase choices are becoming more considered. Vida wants to provide more sustainable, greener options. Let’s hope that other companies follow suit.

WFH from Mauritius

Observation: The island of Mauritius is offering a new visa that will allow South Africans to live and work there long-term. This VISA is free and contains no obligations. South Africans may enter Mauritius on a tourist visa and apply for the Premium Long-Stay Visa once they are there, or they can apply through the economic development board before departure. Some of the requirements for this long-stay visa include not being able to enter the Mauritian labour market, and applicants will need to prove that they have enough income from a source outside of Mauritius to remain there.

Why: Mauritius has managed the virus very well and it enables people who do not have it to live a more normal existence. Mauritius has favourable personal tax rates and ... its Mauritius. For Mauritius it means that people with money are coming to their island, and spending foreign currency without affecting the labour market.  Future: With WFH becoming more realistic, island living might appeal to many people who work remotely. Tax havens might start becoming more and more appealing to those who can WFH.

Using Viral to go Viral

Observation: To promote their new features regarding being interrupted or having your thread hijacked, Twitter recently tasked BBCDad with creating a tongue in cheek ad showing him being interrupted again.  Why: Using viral stars to promote your product offers brands the opportunity to take advantage of their virality. In this case the use of BBCDad is a perfect usage of the tactic, with the advert aligning perfectly with Twitters new features. Future: We see brands doing this more and more in South Africa, but not at the rate or quality that we’d expect. Hopefully this will provide a new train of thought for marketing and advertising.

New Belief Systems

This is less an observation and more of a prediction. During times of great uncertainty and upheaval, people seek out something to hold onto and to believe in, 2020 is just such a time. Even with the success of the Biden Harris campaign bringing some good cheer, this will not stop the tide of polarising views, fake news vitriol, pandemic confusion, killer hornets and more.  In the 70′s there were a raft of alternative religions and cults that cropped up in amongst the Vietnam war, cold war, civil rights movement and assassinations. Then as now, the earths population were intrigued and horrified by political shenanigans on a global scale.  Whilst we go through our global panic, in the West we have seen the decline of religion, the vacuum created by that dearth of belief has resulted in a growth in alternative beliefs. Not all of them are new, Crystals, the Moon, Yoga, Tarot decks, etc. But what is new is the sheer number of people who are not only passive believers but active participants who believe in their own or someone else's spiritual power. T There are growing numbers of personal Shamans, and people seeking to know “the truth”, sometimes it’s the “truth” of Qanon, and sometimes it’s the truth of the value of Mindfulness another growing “cult” belief. I suspect we will start to see the emergence of the cult of spiritual personalities, much like we saw in the 80′s. Some will be “all-loving” kind people, and others will not be, as people seek out the “god” that they choose for themselves. - BR

Observation: L’oreal has create Snap Camera filters which allow you to attend online meetings with varying styles of make up. Why: Creating creative opportunities for online meetings is much the same as in regular “selfie” spaces. We are looking for ways to be creative with our faces and our looks, and in this case perhaps you can actually use them for more sober purposes like your meetings where you don’t feel like “putting on your face”  Future: More stable plugins for all online video platforms. At this stage Snap Camera is slightly sluggish.

2020: 59% Natural Causes Death Increase - South Africa

Observation: “In the past weeks, the numbers have shown a relentless increase – by the second week of July, there were 59% more deaths in South Africa from natural causes than would have been expected based on historical data,” the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).

Researchers at SAMRC, calculated that there had been 17,000 excess deaths in South Africa between the first week of May and mid-July, but they emphasised that these included those from conditions that might normally have been diagnosed and treated if it were not for the pandemic as well as those caused directly by Covid-19.

With 60% more natural deaths in the same time period as last year and the year before, it seems that this is clear evidence of the severity of C19. The emphasis on “conditions that might normally have been diagnosed and treated if it were not for the pandemic” is especially worrying as people are now also dying from the inability to get the treatment they need. There is a deep concern within the medical community that these numbers of deaths that are NOT associated with C19 indicates that our infection rate is far higher than we expect, and that testing is way behind the infection rate

With thousands of people doubt the voracity of the infection, not wearing masks and ignoring actively or casually the guidelines set by the WHO, there is every chance that the virus will keep getting worse, as we have seen in the USA. There also might be a growing number of people dying from Non-Corona based reasons as they are not able to get the care they need. Worsening both of those issues and feeling the flames of conspiracy theorists.
