B-PROJECT
I am honored to announce that I was part of the fantastic localization team that's bringing Ryusei*Fantasia to the west!
With Ryusei*Fantasia announced, I thought I could write a little bit about my experiences with B-PRO and the interesting coincidences that led me to this fantastic franchise. Since I wasn't sure what I was going to do with this blog, and I'm deadly sick still, I might as well do a bit of random writing and talk a bit about the project! Weird rambling under the cut.
Tumblr media
So, I actually knew about B-PRO when it was first announced years ago. My sister and I are huge fans of TMR (TM Revolution, aka Takanori Nishikawa) which stemmed from our love for the Sengoku Basara franchise. (I can go on forever about that one... We did cosplays, photoshoots, nightly gaming sessions [we had all the games in Japanese], I wrote fanfics... um yeah. It was...*a time* :P ) We caught wind that TMR was producing a new virtual idol group...and that's when I learned about B-PRO.
Tumblr media
I didn't know the boys, but I did know that the music was going to be FIRE... And after seeing images of the characters, they didn't really have a lasting impression (except for Korekuni... At the time, I recognized him as "Kishio Daisuke's character" :'D I'm also a seiyuu fanatic, so...).
Tumblr media
(Ahhh...the Daisuke team for KITAKADO...)
Fast forward to a few years later, B-PRO was still in its infancy, and, being the huge seiyuu fan that I am, I listened to a lot of seiyuu music. (I-CHU, Actors franchise, i7, etc. etc...) When just playing a random song list, I ran into some B-PRO music. That's really the extent of what I knew about it... It had a great voice cast and the music is FIRE.
I also found out that Kato Kazuki is voicing in it :O (And then I was certain the music was going to be SOOOO GOOOOD). I'm also a huuuge tenipuri fan (POT head here :'D. Cosplays, fanfics, fanart, dream novels [do people even remember those?] I've done it all.) and naturally, I became a huge Tenimyu fan as well (Prince of Tennis Musicals... I even got a group of friends together to cosplay + reenact some dances from Tenimyu for cosplay contests...and won quite a few of them too ;) ). My favorite Tenimyu cast was the Dream Live 3 group. (I guess they're considered season 2 Seigaku?) with the D-boys and Yanagi Kotaro/Endou Yuya as their Ryouma. (People who don't know Tenimyu, sorry for all the terminology that probably doesn't make sense to you lol... *sweat*) And my favorite school happened to be Hyoutei.
Tumblr media
Now, for those who don't know, Kato Kazuki (voice of Aizome) played the captain of Hyoutei's tennis club in the musicals (Atobe Keigo) and he EMBODIED that smug, ore-sama sonuvabitch <3 aura. If you don't know PoT, Atobe is basically Aizome but younger and filthy rich. And naturally, Tenimyu being a musical, meant Kato Kazuki had to sing live... and I fell in LOVE with his voice. He is such an amazing singer! And actor! (I also started watching Kamen Rider Kabuto because of him... he plays one of the Kamen Riders and he is, again, a smug, ore-sama sonuvabitch... I guess he gets typecasted a lot...)
Tumblr media
All this is to say, I really really really like Kato Kazuki...as an actor, singer, performer... he excudes sexy and he has so. much. presence. Seeing him working in an idol franchise was pretty refreshing and exciting!
(Side note, Goshi's voice actor- Toyonaga Toshiyuki is also in the Prince of Tennis musical... and he shared the stage with Aizome's voice actor, Kato Kazuki, quite a lot. They also interacted a lot in the backstage behind-the-scenes videos. They're really good friends so... queue my utter surprise when I found out how Goshi and Aizome interact in the stories >>;;;; )
Tumblr media
So that was really the extent of my knowledge of B-PRO. Great music, great cast, great character designs. So when I was approached about joining the team, I was very eager to throw my hat into the ring. (PLUS my absolute favorite voice actor, Kakihara Tetsuya is in it... I HAD TO!!!) But boy, oh boy, was I hit with UTTER SURPRISE when I found out how much DRAMA and INTENSITY and STORY the franchise actually has!!!
What I thought might've been "just another idol game" turned out to be so full of drama... It was such a nice, pleasant surprise. I won't go too much into the process and the stories, since you'll all have to play the game to find out! But wow, all the boys were *nothing* like I thought they were at first.
Just for fun, here's what I thought at first vs what I think of them now. (Opinions are my own... and I'm sorry that some of my earlier opinions were...for lack of a better word, *dumb* )
THRIVE:
Tumblr media
Goshi Typical bad boy chara -> I would love to have this character as a bigger brother. He's caring and really looks out for his kouhai... How can anyone NOT like him??? He's my second favorite...!
Tumblr media
Aizome It's Kato Kazuki...so the typical Ore-sama kei, smug, flirty -> Ore-sama kei, smug, (playfully) flirty, and someone with so, so much depth. I want to be his friend...just to be there for him. He needs Goshi and Ashu more than he thinks. And you'll never convince me that he and Goshi aren't an old married couple that gets into fights literally every two seconds.
Tumblr media
Ashu Genki boi #1 -> I remember his scenes very strongly, oddly enough. THRIVE needs him. Aizome and Goshi need him. He may act like a happy-go-lucky boyo with too much energy, but he's the water that helps keep the other Aizome and Goshi flowers alive, whether they realize that or not. He's also a really, really good senpai :')
KITAKORE
Tumblr media
Kitakado Prince-kei. It's Ono Daisuke so...guessing we're gonna get something like his Starry Sky counterpart. -> Pretty much that... but he's also sooo silly whenever Korekuni is involved. Has a silly side to him, and a very loving and charming side too. He's a good guy XD and no one can convince me that he's NOT a married couple with Korekuni ._.
Tumblr media
Korekuni Kishio Daisuke!!!! The Daisuke combo! Pretty boy. Guess he's snobby? -> I see a lot of myself in him. He's highly professional and demands the same level of professionalism from his peers, though that can come off as strict. He's so much more than his appearance, and he's not afraid to show that.
MooNs
Tumblr media
Masunaga (I'M SO SORRY FOR SAYING THIS)I thought he looked...kinda boring...? -> He was one of the characters that I did the most research on because I wanted to grasp his character and who he really is...and when I did, boy... the tears were everywhere. I just want him to be happy. His side story is one that I remember MOST vividly. He's a good leader and a good person and I just really really really want him to be happy.
Tumblr media
Onzai KAKKIIIIIII *screams and flails my arms around* I thought I would love him the most because of his voice actor. (I am obsessed with Kakihara Tetsuya) -> *pats his head* You're a good boy. I wish you will love yourself and realize how much everyone loves you ;~; He's more than his pretty looks... and he's very insightful. He really understands his teammates and cares for them deeply.
Tumblr media
Osari The last time I heard Morikubo Shotaro voice a genki boy was GET BACKERS. [I KNOW I'M SHOWING MY AGE BY SAYING THAT...] Genki Boi #2. -> The mood-maker and a ray of sunshine. His crazy nicknames almost drove me nuts 8'D but he's such a lovable character. It's impossible to dislike him. I know one of the TLers on the team REALLY likes him and I can understand why!
Tumblr media
Nome I love this character design SO MUCH!!! He's so good-looking! -> He's still really good-looking...I love his hair color...his build...his everything. Character-design wise, he's still my favorite. Was funny when I found out he's a gym buff :'D makes sense... He would also make a good big brother to the boys ;u; Though I THINK he has a big brother?? If I remember one of the special events I translated right...
Tumblr media
Sekimura I'm usually not a fan of megane-types. He's okay. (I'M SO SORRY FOR SAYING THAT...AND I HATE MYSELF FOR NOT APPRECIATING HIM MORE BEFORE) -> WOW where to start. I want him to be successful. I want him to be happy. He has SO, SO, SO much depth. He deserves SO, SO, SO much. He breaks the usual megane-type trope and he's his own self that stands out SO MUCH. I appreciate him so much for his faithful, loyal support of his friends and I just REALLY want him to be happy. And no one can convince me that he's NOT madly obsessed with Onzai. He'd date him if he got the chance. :P
KiLLER KiNG
First off, before diving into characters, can I say that THESE BOYS ARE THE FURTHEST THING FROM SOMETHING AS EDGY AS "KILLER KING" I expected super edgy boys in this band... ._.;;
Tumblr media
Haruhi Genki Boy #3. Ah, I think this will be my favorite genki boy. -> He is not my favorite genki boy :'D He's still great of course!!! But it's funny how that didn't turn out the way I thought it would. He's also a giant ray of sunshine, though a bit selfish, but that's part of his charm. The side story for him though... *Haaah* Haruhi... just...whyyyy... But I really really really liked his backstory. He admits his faults and grows to overcome them and I truly, really respect that.
Tumblr media
Yuduki The gloomier of the twins. Lack self-esteem? -> He does lack self-esteem, but he grows from it too. I actually really like Yuduki...I was surprised because I didn't expect that. Again, he's another boy that had way more depth than I imagined. He takes good care of Haruhi, but he's not limited to being Haruhi's shadow. His individual stories away from Haruhi are where he really shines, I think. Go for it, Yuduki! Ganbare!!!
Tumblr media
Akane Genki boy #4. -> MUST. PROTECC. AKANEEEE. *HISSSSS* The BIGGEST surprise for me is that Akane became my TOP. FAVORITE. BOY. His background story and his interactions in the special event stories made me empathize with him A LOT. He has INTENSE imposter syndrome and he doesn't know when to stand up for himself...so he needs his friends to help him. And in response, he LOVES his friends and will do anything to help them. He's selfless for his friends but tends to forget to care for himself. I can go ON AND ON but please, please PLEASE check out his backstory when the game comes out!!! That hit me really hard... and it resonated with me a lot. It might not with others, but it really did with me. Akane love. *sob sob sob*
Tumblr media
Shingari Ah, it's Egu... Egu? With that kinda character design? I guess he's the silent type then? -> There's more depth than I imagined. I remember his backstory quite well, too, because it showed a more vulnerable side to him, and I came to understand Shingari really well after it. *pats his head* He's a good boy. I hope him success. Don't worry, you'll have your friends and your senpai with you! It's okay to be a bit vulnerable sometimes!
Tumblr media
So...that was my evaluation of the characters before and after working on the series. It's okay if you don't agree with my views on the boys, I'm not saying they're the only view and the right view...it's just *my* view, after working on the select parts of the game that I did. It was *amazing* how much my opinions changed. No one was really entirely what I thought they were like...that just shows how much depth the characters really have. They're not bound to just their trope, but there's so much more about them... and I came to appreciate them and the franchise EVEN MORE than ever.
I am so genuinely blessed to have gotten the chance to work on this series and I am so genuinely grateful to PQube and the team that was put together for this title. I can't wait for all of you to play the game and experience this yourself, whether you're new to B-PRO or a veteran fan.

rewatching hyoutei vs rikkai and it’s oshigaku heaven:
gakuto recognising that yuushi isn’t cool/hasn’t shut off his emotions despite the fact that his face and voice are barely any different than usual lol
oshitari leg fetish yuushi cool spraying gakuto’s ankle
the fact that they both have the same Spot(tm) (a la golden pair’s shipping container, such a married couple thing)
gakuto reaching out to the grouchy new transfer student
the moment when chibi yuushi falls in love
Tumblr media
yuushi putting aside his cool/strategic tennis for the sake of gakuto’s dream
(and you all know how i feel about the impulsive/emotional dreamer and the cool-headed partner who puts aside reason to spoil/indulge them combination)
yuushi/their combination literally boosting gakuto to new heights that he can’t reach alone
the way he yells “gakutoooooooo” as if that isn’t the least collected, most heated/passionate we’ve ever heard/seen yuushi be in his entire life
and how gakuto just knows what to do, meaning they’ve either practised this before (unlikely?) or they’re basically on the same wavelength
the absolute faith they have in each other doing this manoeuver
yuushi dropping his racket and running over to catch gakuto as he faints like something out of a romance movie
the way he looks so concerned when gakuto falls but then relaxes/is relieved when gakuto opens his eyes and speaks
yuushi doesn’t say “we won”, he says “you and i won”
also bonus jabun feels:
marui and jackal always being the parents of their underclassman
jackal gave up his spot playing doubles with marui for the sake of rikkai despite really wanting to play with bunta ;~~~;
also think of how long he’s had to wait for this opportunity/how hard it must have been to give up considering everything that happened at U-17 camp!!
the way that they share the same values of being selfless (jackal giving up his doubles spot, marui giving jackal’s grip tape [the last token he had of his partner] to choutarou)
marui being angry at tamagawa for wasting jackal’s time and sacrifice
he probably got his “just try to get in my way” philosophy from jackal covering for him while he was trying out his volley techniques in matches (◡‿◡✿)
which reminds me that marui only really lets himself be spoilt when it’s by jackal, i.e. jackal is the only person he trusts to cover for him (in and out of tennis, which is why he’s always foisting things off onto him lmao)

No way you not only ship obikin but also iwaoi, shizaya AND aokise, i was once obsessed with them all😭😭 saw you talking about not wanting to get into hot and new sports anime so if i may give a recommendation, try prince of tennis if you haven't yet, it's old and so good, it was my first sport anime many years ago and i was obsessed!
First of all, that's just because we have quality taste, obviously we'd like all the same "bickering like two cats in a sack while having some kind of real feelings about each other" pairings. Second, I'm crying and laughing and crying some more because you don't even know. You don't even know how off the deep end I was about Prince of Tennis. The extent of my investment in Prince of Tennis cannot be overstated. You guys think I'm nuts about Star Wars, you didn't fucking see me in Prince of Tennis fandom, and now I'm having war flashbacks to that fandom, because it was great, but also woof was it awful at times, I still have nemeses that I'll never let go of my grudges from that era, and I'm pretty sure they'll never let go of their grudges against me, either. Anyway, high five for another Tenipuri friend, I almost don't even dare ask what part of the fandom you were in because we're having a nice time right now! (I'm teasing about this whole post, but also kind of serious, like I was big into that fandom for a very long time, I watched that anime back when I was wee, I think probably I started on the show when the Fudomine arc was airing? Possibly St. Rudolph. But it was pretty early on and I lasted until somewhere just before the OAVs were released, so it was a solid five years of my life I dedicated, and to this day I am still SEIGAKU RIDE OR DIE, but I totally read a ton of Hyoutei and Rikkaidai fic, too.)

I feel like I don't know how to be a niche fan on Web 2.0. Like seriously, where would I go to find Prince of Tennis musicals later than Rokkakumyu? Where are the torrent sites that somehow never gave me a virus or called the FBI down on me? Does that kind of thing still exist or are they gone forever?
Thankfully I found the DVDs I'd burned years ago and they're mostly not corrupted, so I have Dream Live 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, Fudomine, St. Rudolph, side Yamabuki, Hyoutei, and Rokkaku (in a baffling mix of raws and different languages' subs), so that's a pretty good collection. Still, it's a little sad to think that my proficiency has decreased so much I wouldn't have any idea where to go for that.

A quick update; some more thoughts on Shaman King 2021 — and this time, it's Episodes 33-37!
Episode 33
The last instalment of Mt Osore La Voile and wow... I was just on the verge of weeping the whole time. It's so sweet to see the reciprocated feelings between Yoh and Anna (and the fact that Yoh was the one who doki'd first? 2001 made their relationship feel a bit one-sided, somehow) and this flashback makes it pretty clear that no, Yoh loves his bride-to-be a looot.
The revelation that Anna can read minds is one that I have to come to grips with because it raises questions about everything that's gone before; I think the lack of foreshadowing makes it a bit iffy but whatever, it just really illustrates how much of a powerhouse Anna is.
But damn — the origins of the 1080 beads and Yoh's necklace? My heart...
I love Matamune. I am so sad about what passed between him and Hao and how he holds it in his heart even now... I'm trying not to scroll through the Shaman King tag too much in order to avoid spoilers but sheesh, it's hard when I wanna reblog fanart! But yeah, I definitely love Matamune... sobs...
The ending poem really got to me. I loved the way it was sang.
Episode 34
HOROHORO REMAINS THE COOLEST
And that just makes it seem like I'm making a lousy joke but for reaaaalll, he's such a cool character — "I suck at math!" — and a good person, guh!
And his dad just being right there?? What??
(Glad to see Pirica finally getting some screen time; she was so much more prominent in 2001.)
And poor Ren being traumatised at the thought of being Sleeping Beauty'd good grief HIS EXPRESSIONS ARE TOO FUNNY
Ren: As far as I'm concerned, I owe you another one
Yoh: But if you died, how would I call in those favours?
SCREAMNS. YELLS. WHAT AN EXCELLENT DYNAMIC.
Episode 35
KOORI NO SEKAIIIII. Hyoutei intensifies!
Love the way Horohoro (the coolest) pulled off that combination attack — and I think it says a lot about his power that he flawlessly worked with strangers' spirits. Once again, he is just a top-notch kid.
Marco has issues, man. Why is he always hitting Lyserg fjgkfk MARCO STOP
And my first intro to Gandhara! They definitely have a presence! I can't wait to see more of them!
Ooft. I did wonder if the babies' dad might've been killed by Joco.
Mikihisa is still adopting everyone.
Episode 36
I saw a post that reflected that all of the past few episodes have taken place on the SAME DAY and wow, what a wild day it's turning out to be!!
I literally cannot believe my job is keeping me from watching more Shaman King right now SOBS
But bloody hell!!! Muntzer possessing Seyrarm the whole time? MY JAW DROPPED
Team Bleeding / Dying / Throwing Up showing up to save the day at the end OH MY HEART
Episode 37
Hao just. Hopped away. Just like that. We didn't even see him leave. He was just gone.
Wow... so everyone is gonna die and be reborn again to boost their mana, huh? Gandhara are pretty kind to be freaking healing everyone every 5 seconds (though! It wasn't explicitly stated that Yoh was healed by them so huh, maybe our boy did manage to heal himself after all).
Man, Joco losing his eyesight... his upgrade was seriously cool.
The Golem arc wrapped up a bit toooo quickly, but it was still good stuff! There was a lot of drama and it was nice (?) to see Lyserg work with the team... but I have to say that the X-Laws are freaking lenient to be letting him run off all the time, lol
And it's nice to have clarification that Anna can't read minds anymore!
Phew... Manta. It's hard to take the depth of his and Yoh's friendship that seriously because he spends so much time getting overwhelmed by the situation, complaining ("Why didn't Yoh tell ME about his past?") and just plain running away. The friendship has probably been one of the victims of the intense pace but... I know Manta is Yoh's first human friend, but the poignancy just doesn't feel like it's there, which is really sad.
And even Yoh is a bit of a funny one. I love him a lot but it feels like his values flip-flop depending on who he's talking to; his ideals seem to change according to what works for the narrative in that very moment. And then you have Anna (and occasionally Ryu or Ren or someone) giving a speech about why Yoh is so powerful, and sometimes it lands, but other times... boyo's values feel they lack conviction (probably because, "Everything will work out in the end."). And while that is SUPER understandable for a 14-year-old, it is a bit distracting for a protagonist...
So while I loved the Yoh of the flashback, I wish that I could really love the Yoh of the actual Shaman Fight...
I still have 10+ episodes left, so I hope I get hit with a wave of emotion!
Oh, and Lyserg has very Lelouch-like features. The chin!

summer
while digging through boxes of old stuff, I found folders of old writing. this is one of the few things I'm willing to admit exists. it's something like 12 years old, probably.
tenipuri, second-person yanagi POV, was planned eventual yanagi/kirihara. incomplete/discontinued. unedited from what I had handwritten.
He is the sun, the sweat, the impression of tennis in the harshness of the blazing heat, and you want to catch that summer and keep it close.
“Summer,” he says, and his eyes are bright, dark eyes lit up from inside, so much a contradiction like the rest of him, “is for tennis.”
You feel the corners of your mouth quirking upward, and you feel the question he wants you to ask, and so you oblige him. “What about the rest of the seasons?”
He grins, and his teeth flash brightly white in the sun. “Spring is for tennis too,” he explains, though you know and he knows you know what he'll say, “and so is fall.”
“And winter?” you ask, amusement bubbling within you, amusement to match that dawning in his eyes.
“Winter is for snowball fights,” he answers, and then, almost as an afterthought but not quite because he was planning to add it all along, “and tennis.”
Everything is tennis with him. Sometimes you even believe that. Sometimes you wonder if you're tennis too, and that one day “Tennis-senpai” will slip from his mouth as easily as your name.
The world is more complicated than that. People are more complicated than that. They are not so easily classified, most of them, except for him, and that is because he is purely, simply summer.
*
When you first met him, it was spring and he was out of place, a raging blaze of heat among the newly budding leaves.
(Spring, you thought, was Seiichi's season, and maybe that was why he lost so easily. But Seiichi wasn't spring, not like he was summer.)
He came in like a storm, a summer monsoon, and you stood calm against him, a dam that weathered the storm until it wore itself out. You were the one who picked him up afterwards, even as those green eyes the color of hydrangea leaves looked at you distrustfully.
You instilled the basics of control in him. You taught him the law of Rikkai Dai. He was vicious, pure energy, innocence, single-minded dedication. He was raw, he was wild, he was childlike, and slowly he came to trust you, like a feral beast trusts someone he will sometimes consider not biting.
That was the first time anyone noticed him. Seiichi said he was interesting. Gen'ichirou grunted and looked vaguely disapproving. It fell upon you to make sure he...
You weren't sure what you were supposed to do with him. No one did, really. Masaharu suggested once that you were trying to make him a productive member of society, and then laughed, like it was impossible, and maybe it was.
He truly came into his own that summer, and if nothing else, that is how you will remember him, fierce grin on his face and curls wet with sweat. He met all of Gen'ichirou's standards, though the vice captain would never tell him, and he exceeded all your expectations, and maybe even Seiichi was satisfied by his progress.
He always was that summer, even when the season passed and faded into autumn reds and browns, and even when that was eclipsed by a cold dead winter, colder than usual when Seiichi collapsed and the world started falling apart. Even then, in the sterile white rooms of the hospital, you couldn't help but think that the warm spark of him still burned brightly. The place subdued him—it subdued you all—but the look in his eyes and the scent of summer remained.
He was quiet when you made the promise to win, through Prefecturals and Regionals and all the way up through Nationals, without losing even once, any of you. It was more than possible, your data said; it was even probable. Hyoutei Gakuen and Shitenhouji Chuu would probably give you some trouble along the way, but you could handle them, given the right preparation. You would win, and win, and win, until you came out on top, undefeated.
At the sound of the word “Nationals,” his head lifted like a dog that had caught a scent on the wind. A grin broke across his face, and you knew it was because that was his goal, had been his goal all along. Nationals in the summer, under the harsh beating sun and with the roar of the crowd in his ears.
That was all right. You could use that drive, that relentless determination. Gen'ichirou saw it, too, and approved.
He would be useful, the Second-Year Ace, the Devil. He had so much potential, but he was careless. It fell on you to teach him self-control, to hone his skills, so that he would be at his best.
He never thanked you. There was no room for thanks, not in this mad drive to be the best.
*
You were the first to lose, to break the promise made far, far away from green courts and white lines, in rooms that stifled and smothered and smelled of medicine and sterility. You were the first to lose, in a game you had expected to win, but Sadaharu surprised you. Sadaharu did like to surprise you, and sometimes it worked, and this was one of those times.
No one was more disappointed in the outcome than you. No one was more satisfied than you. It was a disappointment tinged with pride, and a satisfaction tinged with sadness, because after all, this was not your fight alone, and you had let down more than just yourself.
You knew the moment the referee called “game and set” that Gen'ichirou would be angry with you. You were already steeling yourself for the blow, as you walked up to him, looked him straight in the eye, and said, “I'm sorry. I broke the promise with Seiichi.”
He rose to his feet, and though he was shorter than you, he always did have such a presence about him that made him seem to tower. He drew back his hand, and you waited, knowing that you deserved the slap—welcoming, almost.
What you did not expect was the racket that stopped the hand before it got close, and the pair of bright green eyes that regarded Gen'ichirou with just a hint of challenge. Perhaps it was his way of getting revenge, and through the cocky words and the confident grin, you thought you detected something else. It might have been your imagination, or it might have been his payment to you, for everything up to now. Nevertheless, it surprised you.
You knew from the beginning that against Fuji Shuusuke he did not stand a chance of winning. You knew, but you did not tell him. And if his protection was his way of thanking you, then your silence was your way of showing your gratitude.
It paid off. You had not been expecting him to reach that level of play, at least not so soon, and you supposed you had Fuji Shuusuke to thank for acting as the catalyst.
