Now this next one is definitely a scene that's been on my wips for ages but I figured the screenshots were good too. It's a discussion between Sam and Rhodey about what happened to Rhodey during Civil War and we ALL have read fic addressing it, and while I hated this was in a deleted scene, the fact it's actually a canon thing is kind of nice.

After a commercial break, Miro/Kip have a tag match (squash) against Lee Johnson/Sean Maluta and then do a promo about the broken arcade cabinet.

He asks for an apology from Orange and then immediately slaps him anyway. Best Friends get mad on his behalf but Orange casually says everythings cool and walks with the two of them offscreen. Over the course of 2022 you’ll occasionally see a guy in the crowd with a cardboard box on his head. That’s Kip Sabian, out of kayfabe he was dealing with recovering from a shoulder injury? It lasted a while and when he recovered he came back as a my chemical romance lookin’ dude who may or may not have thought the cardboard box was controlling him? The gimmick didn’t get over so it got dropped pretty fast. He also had a short feud again against Orange Cassidy in 2023 when Orange had the All-Atlantic Championship– he got under Orange’s skin so bad! Anyway thats neither here nor there. Howdy! I'm a big fan of your Newsies fics and you've inspired me to write for em :D I know your doing 911 fics rn (which, keep it up, I'm loving em) BUT I wanted some advice regarding modern Newsie fics !

You always do a really good job of making modern adaptations still feel like the Newsies, and make the characters fit their new environments really well. I was just wondering how you chose if/when to use their nicknames? Like, in some fics you use Tony, and in some you use Racetrack. Both work well within their respective fics, I was just wondering how you chose, or if it was more a vibes thing.

Honestly, when and if I use the newsie's nicknames really depends on the situation. For newsies specifically, I like to use the use of their actual names as a way of indicating how close a relationship is.

There's a trust in telling someone their actual name--one that goes deeper than a general friendship/brotherhood of newsies. And there's the flip side of not abusing that trust by overusing the given name.

That foundation Like, for the domestic au, since Jack is raising Tony and Charlie, he mostly uses their actual names, with the nicknames sprinkled in. On the flip side, for a more general high school/college au, the nicknames might be more common since, while they're all good friends, they didn't necessarily grow up together.

There are also other things to consider, like the context of how characters know each other in the au. In 'with your hair falling into place like dominos,' Jack calls Spot 'Spot' but Davey calls him 'Sean,' because they met him at different times. Davey's known Spot since middle/high school and has only ever known him as Sean, but Jack didn't meet him until college, after he started going by Spot.

Additionally, Davey refers to himself as 'David' that entire fic because Jack hasn't given him the nickname yet.

So, yeah! It's mostly vibes based, but there's an internal logic to the vibes, if that makes sense? Hope that helped!!! Please drop by with a fic link whenever you post!

Mike finds himself looking through the schematics he took from Afton Robotics for the fifth time that week.

Not because he can’t understand them, but because he can’t help feeling like he’s missing something. Despite the mechanical voice that’s now a permanent part of his consciousness answering all of his questions, elaborating on what ‘storage tank’ and ‘parental voice sync and replay’ meant, even with a big if he can trust the information given, it’s still not making much sense.

Sure, Mike can get behind the fact William Afton designed animatronics specifically to lure people in for nefarious reasons. But there’s no answer as to why.

And while there might be people out there who don’t really need a reason, William wasn’t one of them. Not a person who wouldn’t do something like this oh no this has William written all over it, but the man needs a motive.

On top of all of that, there’s a very distinct lack of anything concerning spaghetti wires. Aka, the robot acting as his organs was either a top secret project, a random creation that’s the equivalent to a doodle made by an artist, or a fully sentient machine that went rouge and/or built itself.

Option 1 seems most likely, but Mike really likes option 3.

Started reading a biography of Marie Curie and im immediately put off on the first page because they spelled her name Sklodowska instead of what it really is, Skłodowska. I feel like if you are going to write a book about a Polish woman you could at least spell her name correctly and include a little footnote with a pronunciation for the reader. Its not like you're transliterating from a language with a different alphabet, L is already a letter in the polish alphabet. And even if you did transliterate it--it would be like "Skwodovska." Why do this??

Nana, Émile Zola

Finally getting some French lit in. To be completely honest, I've had this book for almost a decade, and I never read it. Well, actually, apparently I tried at some point, because I found some underlined bits very early on -- but it's clear that I gave up. I remember struggling with it back then. I didn't, this time. It's nice to see proof of my improvement, although I'm not sure what specific skill is concerned.

For a quick & anachronistic summary, it's the story of a 19th century escort girl who makes it big in paris.

I was actually surprised by how easy to read this was. I kind of expected very difficult language. It is poetic, but not actually difficult. The text is easy to follow, almost journalistic. Poetic journalism.

I really, really enjoyed Nana. It's a long ride, and what a ride. It reads, at times, like a soap opera, with how she has a roster of desperate men orbiting around her. She really is the sun of her novel -- and it is her novel. I entered this book ignorantly (despite being French and a ~lit student, I'm not actually well-versed in my country's literature) and it kept surprising me. Where I expected a moralizing tale, or at least a pessimistic outlook on the arrogant seductress, I got the unstoppable, inescapable success of Nana. It's almost a power fantasy, although I doubt Zola saw it through this angle. I mean, it does end badly. Spoilers, but she fully dies in a disfiguring manner. And there is this underlying theme of Nana, the beautiful Venus from the lower classes, bringing the rot of the sewers to the silk sheets of the aristocracy. She all but ruins the entire upper class with the raw power of her sex-appeal, and I thought that there was something cosmic about it. By the time she's at her apex, she herself does not have control of her situation. She becomes like an empire, constantly conquering further reaches to maintain peace and prosperity throughout her imperial reign. She devours. And yet she's so incredibly human. She felt to me like a deity unaware of its power, and, in that sense, her death (especially because it's in the full bloom of her youth and legendary status) felt more like a shedding of the mortal form. Admittedly, I also just find it more fun to interpret it that way. I'm reading for fun, after all. Ah, the specter of academic seriousness hangs over me.

I think Nana is an easy entry point into that sort of literature. Yes, it's part of some long-ass series, but no, you don't need to read the previous books (I didn't). It's very self-contained. It's a long, very eventful ride, through Nana's chaotic and glamorous world. It's long but it feels like going downhill on a bike, and like everything's going too fast still. And it's fucking funny.

And for you, tumblr, my beloved, yes, you will find some messy queers in there. I only talked about Nana herself here, but Nana holds a whole ensemble cast of secondary characters, many interesting women (a wealth of them, really), that are really a whole other serving of delights that I just didn't have time to talk about here. But seriously, just about every character, especially the women, is interesting.

Suddenly they’re stopping. And then the ground starts to tremble. 

“What the fuck is that?” Eggs demands, his head whipping around in the attempt to find anything that could be making the ground shake. It’s not continuous, either. No, it starts and stops rhythmically. Almost like- 

Holy shit those are footsteps. 

“I’m pretty sure that’s James,” Fritz says. 

“I think so too,” Caleb agrees before gently tugging on Eggs’ hand for attention. “Would it be okay if we told James first?” 

James. Partner in crimes James. Doctor James. Giant James. 

Between all of his coworkers, James might actually be the best option. Because Mike will guarantee pick him up to make sure he didn’t manage to break something, and Jeremy will be impossible to say no to no matter what is asked. Scott would be a death sentence. Which leaves James as the winner by default, and Eggs either getting thoroughly inspected or immediately being pocketed. 

...on second thought maybe he would prefer Mike. 

“Sure,” Eggs forcibly smiles. He is doing a terrible job of hiding his nerves if both Caleb and Fritz squeezing his hands in reassurance gives any indication. “Just, uh, question. How do you it’s not, say, Mike?” 

“Mike’s footsteps are a lot slower.” 

“Though it might be Scott, sometimes it’s hard to tell him and James apart.” 

Eggs’ eyes grow wide. “What are my footsteps like?” 

“Very bouncy,” Fritz says, and he can hear a smile in the teenager’s voice. “We can always tell when you’re walking down the hall.” 

“Hey!” 

“It’s a good thing,” Caleb giggles, distracting him as Fritz lets go of his hand. “It means we don’t hesitate to always find the nearest exit to say hi.”
