I actually love SNW and I think some criticisms of it are unfair or look at the show very shallowly. For many aspects of the show you can see that TOS did the same things this show is criticised for (make Spock have relationships with women, inconsistent portrayal of Vulcans, reimagine other races later in the show(s). These are not the TOS characters we know yet - "they're acting out of character!!!" - yes because people grow and change throughout their lives! They're supposed to grow into the characters we know in TOS and there are many ways you can get to that point B. This is just their interpretation. And idk giving female characters some agency and motivations is not a bad thing? It's actually nice as long as they approximately lead to TOS! And T'Pring actually had lots of agency in TOS. That was kinda the point of Amok Time. I also see remarks that the social commentary isn't poignant enough - TOS wasn't always the paragon of progressiveness, and they weren't always subtle. idk I think the snw episode where we're invited to judge another culture being cruel and barbaric which then is twisted to show our own hypocrisy is pretty poignant and very TOS! Lest we forget TOS had many episodes from great through meh to straight up awful. SNW is pretty consistently good plot wise, even though I don't love all the reimaginations there too. You don't have to like it but the offended scoffs when you even mention SNW are a little much. The episodes are interesting, whimsical and fun and Enterprise feels so real and alive. I love it!

When Sprite and Tun were teasing each other in the locker room, Tun jokingly said that he wasn't important to Sprite now that Sprite has new friends, and Sprite jokingly told Tun he was old news.

Sprite told Tun he was being replaced as a best friend, but later when Sprite saw how upset First was in the locker room, there was no teasing.

First wouldn't even maintain eye contact with Sprite.

But the second Sprite confirmed that he sees the relationship he has with First differently than the rest, First looked at him.

The doubt that First holds in is clearly on display throughout this scene. Sprite has been nothing but nice to First for the past few weeks, but Zee was mean to him for years. First can't trust his feelings because he can't trust Zee.

So when Sprite questions First's behavior, First admits he is jealous, but every look First gives during the confession is him questioning his own feelings.

Is he allowed to feel this way? Is it okay to admit to it? Is he misreading Zee? Is he messing everything up?

Then, Sprite simply says his name and his face changes.

And that confirms every doubt First had.

I thought you were nice to me because you had feelings for me too.

He misunderstood. Zee was just being nice. He doesn't have a right to feel the way he does.

He is the problem.

But then, Sprite reaches out to him.

He brings First back. That touch makes First look at him again.

Who said I don't?

Another questioning look from First.

But this time, Sprite pulls him in for a kiss as an answer.

And that's why I'll be living in this episode all week.

Kim has a chipped tooth , but the chipping is inside , and very very small. It can't be seen and he won't get it fixed.

It's a souvenir from the very first time he defeated Chan on hand to hand combat. Even Chan doesn't know that, THAT hit, did so much damage.

Chay on the other hand , knows.

After their first kiss on his shaggy old couch , and the many more that followed that night , he could wax poetry about all the edges and softness of every single crevice on Kim's mouth. He had whimpered when it accidentally grazed his lips , and had grabbed onto Kim's shoulders at the time.

But after that one night Chay never got to kiss Kim again. He never saw the warmth in his eyes that melted and re-moulded his entire world. Not even when he begged in front of Kim to tell him some part of whatever they had , was true.

Afterwards when he tried to move on , when he tried to fall into the arms of strangers who creeped all over him lustfully , the kisses never made him * feel*.

They were just a way to distract the minds of these poor replacements , so they wouldn't notice how empty Chay's ministrations were. They always closed their eyes when they kissed , and so Chay's unsatisfied frown went by unnoticed. His anger at the reminder , the lack of friction when they tried to dominate him, only made him pull back to lead their attention elsewhere, which they mistook for throes of passion. Hopefully.

When Chay finally was picked up by Kim at Yok's bar one night , Kim was shocked seeing how very much Chay had to drink , and how lax the security around him had been , especially considering their ward had been inebriated. Chay could barely recognise it was Kim half-carrying him out of the bar. Porsche had mentioned to "Make sure Porchay is being safe , Yok called and said he's drinking now. I know , shocking!" , Kim hadn't expected to end up with whole armful of drunk lanky Chay with flushed face and pouty lips.

Kim decided then and there to take him to his penthouse to sleep it off, so he could lie to Porsche about how drunk he had been and maybe so noone else could see his Chay like that.

Once a slightly sobered up Chay took in the piano that stood against the backdrop of a starlit Bangkok skyline , he tearfully broke down and tried to push Kim's aid away.

Only for them both to end up on the rug overlooking the balcony , holding each other , Kim trying to bask in the aroma that was simply his Porchay , and Chay trying to claw his way into Kim's leather jacket.

Finally , finally; Chay got to taste him again , and his whimpers got louder each time Kim grazed his plump lips with that one chipped tooth.

Some vague part of Chay's consciousness revelled that it couldn't get better than this , for Kim to choose that moment bite his lips with full force and draw blood. Chay started to shake like a scared fawn when Kim's fingers climbed underneath his shirt and headed to his chest.

This broke my heart. The blame can't be placed on the usual skepticism about romances, like we often see with characters on screen. Because it's the truth. If Tharn acts on his love, the consequence is death for that person.

Chalothon's words made it clear that he is willing to do anything, including killing someone or even Tharn himself, to ensure that no one takes Tharn away from him. Although Tharn is unaware of the doctor's involvement, he knows something is after him. He has known that his whole life. And he knows that something has been trying to kill Phaya, too.

I absolutely adored the parallels they established between the artist and his lover with Phaya and Tharn. Tharn was forced to look at love throughout the investigation and not push it away like he usually tries to do. And Phaya brought him to his house at precisely the right time. He got to be surrounded by more love and warmth, making him waver more. Because undeniably Phaya stirs up intense feelings in him. Tharn's love for Phaya is incredibly deep, even though he doesn't realize it, spanning lifetimes, deepening his fear of losing him. He also knows that he doesn't have enough strength to keep resisting the pull they feel towards each other. Which is why this sentence hit me hard. You can see he wants it, just as bad as Phaya, but he can't love.

The passing of objects from character to character worked so well in this pair of episodes. The homework: Joon-hee does it for Yoon-jae, Yoon-jae would have done it twice for Shi-won, Dad does it for Shi-won in the end. The tickets: Yoo-jung to Hak-chan, revealing her crush on Yoon-jae, then giving them to Yoon-jae who can only think selfishly of Shi-won, and Hak-chan reusing the Next tickets to ask Yoo-jung out. The scarf: Yoon-jae giving it Shi-won, Shi-won thoughtlessly giving it to Joon-hee… all of it just tells us so much about the relationships, without needing to spell it out. We know exactly who loves whom, and whose heart is getting ripped out in the process.

Folks act like "maybe the author isn't the final authority about what their work means" is some wanky post-modern nonsense and not a simple recognition that a lot of authors are perfectly prepared to bullshit about their own work. Like, leaving big-name popular media aside, I have personally encountered authors being actively disingenuous about their own work for all of the following reasons:

A true answer wouldn't fit the image they've cultivated.

They've decided they like the explanation the readers/viewers have come up with better than what they actually had in mind.

Something that was originally intended as a standalone work ended up growing into a franchise or series, and now they're pretending that was the plan all along for some reason.

They don't want to admit that the bit you're asking about is genuinely just a plot hole.

The real answer gets into some shit they don't care to discuss, so they've prepared a cover story to explain away the parts they don't want to talk about.

Their politics have changed since they wrote it, but they don't want to acknowledge that, so they're constantly trying to re-interpret everything they've ever written to be perfectly consistent with whatever their positions are this week.

They wrote it decades ago and they honestly don't remember what they were thinking at the time, so they're just making shit up; sometimes they also don't remember what shit they made up the last time, so the answer is different every time they're asked.

The work in question is at least partly autobiographical and they can't tell the truth without confessing to a crime in the process.

Most of the good bits are plagiarised and they don't really understand it themselves.

They're lying to you on purpose, for evil reasons.
