Since Hetalia is trending due to the new season+manga being announced? Um word of warning/advice to any new/returning fans:

1. You will see people saying that it's Nazi worship. It's not, it mostly just makes fun of different cultures across the world and is like "And at this point in history, in this country, this happened" but funny. A lot of the humor is very tongue in cheek... It's like a mix of the Office and Culture Clash tbh, but from what I've seen (and as a middle schooler I saw most episodes and most of the manga) There isn't much about the politics of the N@zis, just the war strategy styles/how they rationed food. It's also a light hearted show about history, culture, and sometimes war, so it doesn't really talk about the dark sides of war.

2. On the subject of war, It pretty much showcases wars that are Wwii or before, so nothing "recent." Also for the most part, guns aren't shown in the series, and when they are, they aren't shown being used (usually strapped to someone's back). The wars show usually play out as "narration about why two countries are fighting" and then Hannah Montana Style Catfighting.

3. If you do like the show, good! Don't let anyone get you down about it, however be warned that the fandom itself has pretty dark fic, and some people who were in the fandom were not very nice. Not to others within the fandom, or outside of it. The fic can also be classified as "crack fic"

4. The main characters are all stereotypes of countries based on the author's experiences in America and Japan. I.e. America is basically the guys from Buzzfeed Unsolved+ Sanders' Sides' Roman, England is a posh prick, France is Flirty+"cultured?" , Japan is reserved, Sweden is stoic, China and South Korea are both loud, etc. Its all stereotypes, that's the joke. It also talks about where these stereotypes stem from wothin the culture.

5. There isn't a coherent story being told. Most of the episode consist of 5-15 minute snapshots into history. Some of them are cute, some are sad, some are informative, and some are .. a bit weird.

6. There is a movie. It makes no sense, and I'm pretty sure its a ripoff of the Movie Alien.

7. Just... don't look at the old fanfic... don't look at the old fan games. Like, Heta Oni is ok? Dreamtalia is really pretty but really messed up? But other than that it's not worth it. A lot of it is racist/fetishizing, and the other half is so deep in Fan Wars (i.e. "wars" people had over ships, characters, and portrayals. To the point where the author had to clarify whether or not one of the main characters was a girl or not)

A lot of the old fans were misogynistic, homophobic/internalised homophobic, yaoi fangirls, and a little sexist. There were some fans who thirsted so hard over characters that if an adult female character was so much as in their fave's space they were jealous over her and led cancel campaigns towards said character. Those who didn't cancel female characters... sexualised them.

There's a 12 yearold (micronation,Wy) for some reason (said 12 yearold would canonically be about 17 now, but I'm sure she's still portrayed as 12.) who several fans had sexualised just because she wears a bikini top and shorts. They also shipped her, often in a dirty manner, with another nation who is presented as like 12.

Just dont look at the fanworks. The fanart is... ok i guess? But dont go there, its gross. The fandom was prominent during 2012, the same time that Attack on Titan and Yuri on Ice were prominent- and that should tell you all you need to know about the fandom, that it was very gross and immature.

8. All of the characters, as stated by the author, represent the attitudes and stereotypes of the people of a nation, not necessarily their government. That being said, I'm not sure why some of the characters seem to get along and some don't, as their relationships seem to represent political relationships more than how different peoples view each other.

9. IF YOU SHIP, please do not ship characters where the nations hate eachother irl, where the nations have historically opressed one another in whatever way (i.e. England x India, Austria x Hungary), or where the nations, in the show, have some form of Familial ties (England x America, France x Canada, Netherlands x Belgium, n.c etc.)... tbh it's best not to ship, most of the characters hate eachother anyways. But if you do ship, try to avoid ships with those problematic dynamics.

10. Try to enjoy it with a grain of salt. Its a very fun, childish show, that is meant to teach Japanese Children about history and culture across the world. It wasn't really meant for an older audience until about season 4, when it took off in Western Nations as Funimation was adapting and dubbing it.

11. Do check out cosplay culture within the fandom! It's generally the nicest side of the fandom and the most beautiful part of any anime fandom.

12. I have long left the fandom due to personal growth as well as the fandom dying out. It died because of lack of content and internal conflict, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the good parts of it... just seriously don't engage with most fanworks.

I really like what you said in your answer " they helped wtfock create hype without really knowing what s4 was about and they were equally blindsided by the narratives" so I don't know exactly if you meant what I think you did and I don't want to put words in your mouth, but I do feel bad for the blogs that tried to stay on wtfock's side in the beginning, I speak for myself when I say no one was expecting Kato to end up being racist, I didn't expect at least. And I think it's valid to hold people accountable for defending it, but all I see was blogs that love wtfock waiting to see what the season was about and as soon as the clip with Kato saying "this people" aired, that's when I felt this "fan love" started to fade. But it is still unfair to blame people for engaging with the show until that certain point and I hate to see it, because tbh I feel like it wasn't just the show "fading away" but also the fandom with attacks coming from both sides: the fans that never liked the season since the revelation of Kato and the fans that blindly listened to wtfock and waited. It's kinda sad what this fandom has become and it sucks that it was right before Yasmina's season, if only her season came before this one, I wouldn't mind them doing whatever they wanted with the show, as long as Nora and Yasmina would get the right support, I do understand why fans are gonna feel bad for consuming s5, afraid of being called out for still engaging with a show that promoted racism. It's a very delicate topic, I hope the best for Nora but the producers really messed this up for her.

This anon speaks so many truths that are hard to swallow down but I think as a fandom specifically focusing on wtfock its incredibly sad the position big players in the fandom were put in. I don’t think its a secret amongst larger blogs that wtfock has ways of influencing or reaching out for support via differing networks and I couldn’t imagine how hard it would be to quell loyalty if you have meet or have any bonds with the interns, show runners, producers and or actors. Its only natural to want to believe in these loose connections and when they ask for more time and guaranteeing it to them. However I feel that the creation of Kato sorta of created a crisis of fandom faith because this wasn’t about some silly issue like a break up, or who cheated on who? or why is this boy mean to this girl? or why is this boy mean to this boy? Racism is an incredibly delicate topic plaguing society and societal racism is even more delicate because even the most “woke” member of a society will engage in societal racism as it is truly systemic. wtFOCK takes places in a predominately white country that is currently ongoing some serious issues concerning political ideology, hate crimes and hijab bans. I understand in wtFOCK’s mind why they wanted to depict a character that had all these predisposed notions on race and religion but they did not take into consideration that a lot of their fans are white young females and that in away creating Kato they in-turn did two things. They created a character that embodies some of the worse character traits in white society(that they are trying to correct) and gave that character a platform and even worse of all they didn’t even depict the characters struggles well. No one thinks racism isn’t alive and that young adults dont embody aspects of it but wtfock chose to represent it in the laziest way possible they made a white female reductive in every way possible. 

Kato could have had texture I always said I would have love to see your typical hippie loving hyper woke progressive white instagramer who also happens to have micro racist tendencies that she wasnt even aware of but wtFOCK reduced kato to this insanely offensive portrayal in which this white protagonist gets off on purposefully hurting/profiling her black boyfriend and worse of all they tried to make their fans try justify it and change the tide and in-turn challenge their morality. That’s when they crossed the line and I think thats when a lot of fandom influencers stop supporting the show in any monetary way. So what I mean by that is larger blogs publicly denouncing the show stating they should avoid watching the show on their website to plummet the views, engaging in their instagram, or clips that were blatant sponsored content. Basically the notion of your gonna try to use us then we will use you because remember we knew early on that s5 is 100% promised because Nora like that tweet about her season being pushed back. I do wonder what wtFOCK will do for s5. Are they going to reach back out to these fandom movers and shakers to try to create hype? Or is wtFOCK themselves stepping back from being so entrenched with the fandom? I sorta of know the answer to this. I think wtFOCK recognizes the strain they put on fandom influencers(and the fandom because this season caused so much turmoil) and I think they are going to put a new face forward to mitigate fandom/production discourse particularly around how wtFOCK should listen and leverage the fandom social media request but I will say this I know for a fact that after s4 wtFOCK lost some big hitters in the fandom space and I don’t think those relationships can be mended anymore. I think those people washed their hands of their production associations and are merely just here to support the actors from afar now.

Thanks for such a detailed answer!!! I'm really torn between Celene/Briala and Gaspard/Briala because I know Celene/Briala would be better in the long run but at the same time their relationship was messed up and I feel bad convincing them to get back together. I feel like my Inquisitor wouldn't be able to overlook Celene burning the alienage either. But I don't generally like Gaspard either! I'm just gonna have to keep thinking about it lol... one of those options where I'll never be 100% happy

yeah basically that’s the thing. 

I try to think about the fact my Inquisitor doesn’t know the details of what Celene had done/how bad the relationship was with Brialla to give me better conscience doing that tbh, bc yeah, my Inquisitor cannot know those stuff, no one BRIEFED US about that. 

And my characters are inclined to pragmatism with Orlais and especially i’m just… very disgusted about Gaspard’s glorification of expensionism and i really don’t want him going in power and giving for message to anyone in Orlais “even if he doesn’t carry through with his expensionist ideals, it is A-OK to think so”

Politically speaking I really think Celene’s stability would at least stop people who agree with Gaspard from acting up. Bc Celene would remain undefeated for 10 years, so you don’t want to challenge her. While Gaspard being a new leader would bring instability of anyone going “well we recently overthrew the regime let’s do it again”.

I think i’m just… uncomfortable with the thing Gaspard would inspire with people in Orlais in general, even more than his actions.

Celene had done horrible things and i dont condone anything she’s done but she had been more stealthy about it, so her publically recognizing the elven would just send the message “the Empress wants to support the elven and no one had been able to defeat her”, without people to know eventually of her crimes.

And it’s horrible!!! like i hate that. I really really hate that.

But pragmatically speaking I also think that Celene would have had a hard time backing out of her open support to the elven after the affirmed this situation y’know? She would be a bit trapped by the obligations and manoeuvre she took. 

I don’t think Gaspard would care as much for public image so nothing would stop him to go back on his word. 

Ultimately Gaspard is too unstable and dangerous and is openly encouraging bad ideology. Celene is still dangerous, but the message she’d send would be far more calculated and there would be less risks of it backfiring. 

And it kills me for Briala to encourage her back in this, on a personal level, but it’s Orlais, one of the greatest Powerhouse of Thedas, house of the Chantry (which is pretty much anti elves), which is planning unification with Ferelden. As much as it kills me i think pragmatism is the better option because of how important Orlais is. It would have been Kirkwall i would have considered the feelings of its participants a bit more, but here it’s too big. 

Bc like, Orlais being pro elves during the time the Chantry is unstable to start with could really help changing the ties. And imo it would work better with a publically present Briala, than with her manipulating from the shadows. I mean, if the Chantry learns Briala is manipulating Gaspard it would add to anti-elf propaganda in a way her situation with Celene would do it less. (btw your decision of a leader would also change the outcome for the way the Chantry will be handled in the future too so i think it’s worth considering) 

And on an international matter outside of the Chantry, there’s intra politics with Nevarra and Ferelden, again two countries known for being often at war with Orlais. Gaspard wants war on them and had been pretty vocal about it. Celene wants peace and back in DAO (Return to Ostagar) we know she wanted to actually unify Orlais and Ferelden with a wedding to make sure this bad blood wouldn’t settle in. Celene is actively trying to undo the expensionist past of her predecessor while Gaspard wants to bring it back. And it is recent history enough for Ferelden (see Loghain) that a leader who had talked length about wanting Ferelden back would be like a war declaration in itself, compared to the leader who had done everything to appease the relationship between the two countries ever since she came to power.

(and it’s not to mention Celene is opened to magic in a way we don’t know Gaspard’s intention. That said considering the Circles were originally created in order to use Mages as weapons during war times, I’d say it’s pretty likely Gaspard would want the system to be restored in order to have his war’s ideals fullified, in a way Celene would probably give it more of a leeway)

I care a lot for the Elves and I would do as much as possible for them, it’s just that Orlais’s and its leader situation is Too Big Of An Issue for me to nippick on personal details. 

*shrugs* then i play my Inquisitors with generally a very stressed out sense of responsability (My Trevelyan Mage was basically characterized by “how to find ways for things to do the least damage as possible while changing things for the best” from her Circle days, and my Lavellan Mage being older and first to the Keeper had a high sense of responsability and was formed to take harsh decision in order to take over as a Keeper, so it puts them in a better situation to try to “just avoid breaking things further and what is the best situation we can get”), so this is what i’d see them priviligize. And again neither had been really briefed about how bad Celene had been.

If your inquisitor has a personality that would priviligize something else for whatever reasons (we all roleplay differently) i still think it’s important to take that into account in your decision: it’s your character who picks after all so it should reflect that.

so @cawolters​ had created her own tag game for international women’s day, which is all sorts of amazing and i’m so glad to have been tagged!!! <3 <3 (edit: also have been tagged by @aslanwrites, so thanks!!) Guide: answer these seven Qs in the voice of your female character(s), and then tag somebody!  of course, the three female characters in my wip is Zhen, Yu(f) -- but for this, since it’s pretty obvious it’s the female Yu, i’ll just call her Yu -- and Jia, so i’ll be doing this for them! (btw i found this really difficult to answer because... spoilers??? abound????? but also they might change so i dont really know what to write at some parts?? but okay you know what fine, let’s have some spoilers here) (also note that all of their answers pertain to their pasts / backstories) 1. Who was your mother and what did she teach you?

Zhen: i don’t have a mother. For real, though. Yu: My mother’s harsh, and she’s made me stronger. Jia: my mother’s a strong, tough woman. she’s got to be, to raise a kid on her own.

2. Do you have any sisters (related or not)?

Zhen: yeah, i have a few. they’re all major pains in the asses though Yu: No. Jia: I’ve got a younger sister. We’re pretty independent of one another

3. How has your gender shaped your path in life?

Zhen: I don’t know. the woman who raised me was pretty great, and i never really cared about the other sex too much anyway. like, people tried to bully me sometimes i guess but i never really cared too much about it, they never really affected me. i’ve faced worse anyway. gender doesn’t matter when it comes to that. Yu: i’ve been raised by a very strong, fierce mother, and it has followed me throughout my life. i am not affected by discrimination, or by prejudice. there’s no point in caring about such lesser things in life when there are other more important things to look towards. Jia: yeah. i mean, women aren’t regarded as highly as men are. i’m only in my early-20s and people already nag at me to get married and settle down and like, then what do you want me to do for the rest of my life? take care of kids and clean up after the house? i have loftier aspirations than that. it’s so annoying. they keep yammering on and on , but when it comes to the men, it’s all about getting somewhere with their career. i know it’s stressful either way, but still. maybe i don’t want to get hitched so young, yknow? ah, whatever. you can do something about it only if you actually do something about it.

4. What does the woman you admire look like? Who is she?

Zhen: she is the kindest, most patient woman i’ve ever known. she has a bunch of rowdy kids and -- okay, i can’t say she has never lost her patience, she has a pretty bad temper despite how i’ve described her -- but she’s never lost hope in us, yknow? she’s strong and fierce and full of fight. i couldn’t have asked for a better person in my life.

Yu: she’s strong and capable. no one can ever doubt her capabilities, and around her, i just want to get better myself. i need to match up to her standards, to reach her expectations. i just... can’t.

Jia: well the woman i admire is myself. i mean, why admire someone else when you can just look up to yourself right? who can you be better inspired by than your own creativity and your own mind and your own capabilities? i strive to make myself better and to achieve my goals , and i am constantly inspired by my own improvement and growth. say what you want, but that’s just the truth.

5. Why do you think women are considered the gentler sex?

Zhen: honestly??? i have no clue. haven’t seen that much gentle women in my life. they’re all pretty fierce and kick-ass. i guess it could be through history, yknow, in imperial china the empress just manages the harem and takes care of household duties and makes sure the house is all pretty and in place and presentable while the emperor does all the bigger political and military stuff. you won’t ever see the emperor touching a needle pin, will you, and all the women are the handmaidens and servants and weavers while the men are guards and military officials. i mean, it’s not like men don’t go near all these supposedly dainty stuff, it’s just that it’s made to be the official job of women. personally i’d love to just handle things at home because it’d be too troublesome managing a country’s affairs, but i don’t think that’s because i’m gentle. it’s because i’m lazy as hell and i’m owning it.

Yu: What Zhen said. surprisingly she hasn’t really spouted that much crap in this interview. she’s actually being decent, for once.

Jia: sometimes women are still regarded the gentler sex because we’re still perpetuating it ourselves! you hear women on the streets saying things like, ‘i want to find a rich husband who can take care of me for the rest of my life’ or that ‘i’ll settle down and stop working when i get married’ or having aspirations like ‘having a baby and making a family is my only dream in life’. not that it’s wrong, but it just perpetuates that idea of a woman not taking any action for herself! women are strong, alright? look at zhen’s example of the imperial palace. the concubines and the empress’ entire purpose of being in the harem is to gain the emperor’s affections in order to give him a baby, and that might seem like it’s all, but do you know how difficult life in the palace can be? do you know how strong these women are, emotionally, mentally, physically, to take the toil and stress of constantly being pitted against one another-- even if they’re just fighting for the emperor’s affections? and those shoes!! Have you seen the shoes they have to walk in? and they have to kneel and bow and walk delicately and gracefully in those??? and that hair! do you know how heavy their hair can get --

Zhen: you know, i kinda think you’d make a great concubine or empress in those days Jia: i probably wouldn’t even get past the first stage, i’m too rowdy

Zhen: yea, but if you were born in those times you’d learn to be a little more disciplined and dignified and you’d have kicked so many of those asses there

Yu: ... i thought we were trying to fight for women, not encourage fighting among women

Zhen: i’m just saying, yknow, none of those scheming people would have a chance against jia because she’s the fiercest, most scheming person there is! i don’t know if she’d be able to handle the responsibility of empress though... all that dignity and grace and needing to upkeep appearances... 

Jia: yea. i would not want to lead that empress life. that kind of being poised and proper and dignified to upkeep appearances sorta thing is probably more for Yu

Zhen: but Yu won’t be able to take all the scheming. she’d just lock herself in the room to do her work in silence and she won’t even catch a glimpse of the emperor

Yu: ... you know i’m right here, right?

6. What is a piece of your personality that you are proud of?

Zhen: ehhhh.... i don’t know. i can take pretty good care of people, i think. sometimes, when i feel like it. unless it’s too exhausting, then maybe not.

Yu: i think i’m pretty resilient, but i can do better.

Jia: i’m a go-getter. i’m determined, and i’m strong, and i’m hella capable. if i strive for something, you know eventually i’m going to get it.

7. When did you accept your own body and its strengths/weaknesses?

Zhen: well. you just gotta accept that your own body is what helps you breathe and eat and sleep and basically carry you around, yknow? i’ve never really had much problems with my own body, tbh. it serves me well

Yu: sometimes i still think i’m too weak, that my body can withstand more. but sometimes you need more rest in order to go on.

Jia: if i can’t count on myself and my own physical body to do things, then who else can i count on? once you’ve figured that out, it’s pretty easy to accept your own body for what it is.

I wanna say that i feel like i am saturated because i felt thoroughly soaked with those unwanted things —hoax, depressions, toxic people and their influences, and moreover, misbehavior and broken trusts— until i can’t even absorb anything anymore, not even lights and kindness.

Yes. I’m at this very phase of fed-up where i believe that i would really love to give up everything just to be happy, drama-free, and get the hell out of this place, pls. I’m weary of my current conditions, internally, externally, politically, mentally, and physically. Call me weak, but that’s what i really feel right now, where my cats can’t even amuse me anymore.

Internally, i’m on the edge of breaking down because of my anxiety of job-seeking, being unemployed, and my current regret of “dammit why did i took this major in the first place?!”. Tbh, i really wanna be who i always dream of, a diplomat or career woman, worked in the big ass company, got tons of respects from my friends, family, colleagues, etc. Yet, it’s not that simple, dear. Life is not that easy, it’s not as simple as studying, get a scholarship, get an offer on the job you want. No. Big no. Life is depressing enough till you can cry almost every night caused by the same reason you cried over the night before.

Externally—plenty of stuffs actually, yet i’ll start with my nuclear family. My biological mom has been ignoring me since the beginning of this year because of drama between her and my dad where i was dragged on to their stage, congratulated her on her birthday last April, no answer, asked her for apology earlier this month due to the Eid Mubarak, still no answer. My dad and stepmom got into a financial crises, not merely crises, yet they have gotten themselves in financial difficulties due to the economical and digital development, thus i lived with my aunt since i was in high school so at least i can save them a burden. Nevertheless, my aunt who has taken care of me, she decided to resign due to some internal problems, quite a few moments after her husband passed away, and so now she’s unemployed with a limited cash and a slight of assets. My other aunt and uncle, as usual, stingy and selfish, don’t care about the need of their nieces and nephews whilst they have a lot of money and assets, yet still, no feelings or pities. Other uncle, unemployed, spoiled brat, selfish, freak, and doesn’t care bout anything but himself. Those aunts and uncles are not very fond of my stepmom, idk why, well actually i know why, she talks too much, she complains too much, well tbh i don’t really like it too tho, but she’s my mom what can i do?! Dad? not helping, he forbid my stepmom to work and yet that’s triggered her bad habit of talking and complaining too much. And there’s one very close friend of my aunt that’s stupid and annoying, she always bring bad influences to my aunt where it’ll also spread to the whole family. Messed up? I know, that’s the reason why i really want to flee from this house and city.

Friends? Nope. No one but three that i can trust and i accounted for. Peer groups? Nope. I don’t like those spoiled brats who never listen and just go for what they actually need. Yes, i can say that i might be an extrovert but i don’t think that i really have friends since i’m that complicated person and i am that picky and i can’t simply hang out somewhere just to do...nothing???? I might be a fan of shopping, sight seeing, and hang around the malls for hours, but that’s all, without any of those not-so-friends, ok? And frankly, with their existence, i can always say that they actually the ones who make me depressed even more ever since i think i was always be in the dark, never get accounted for, and they never care about me. Not even a chance. :)

Politically. My family was exposed by hoaxes due to the presidential election last April, and the started to become the die-hard fans of the opposition, where they can’t even stop talking and spreading the black campaigns and rumors even after the election finished, and they keep saying that the election was corrupted, there was a big foul in the game. They refused to accept the lost, and keep hoping for an uprising. Shaking my head, i’ve tried so much, to make them understand, to tell them the facts that i had as a neutral citizen and an IR student, yet they-just-dont-wanna-listen. Why? They believe that this country was messed up enough and almost gone to the leftist wings a.k.a. communism. I really wanted to say, you stupid brat, no, it’s your brain and those quasi-religious people you look up to that gone way too far. Politics are just full of game. You know that, you should know that those quasi-religious people are just full of shit and they have no brain.

Those rants above are the reasons why i have this very problem with my very own self. The toxic condition around me drives me insane. It also exhausts me mentally whereas that exhaustion also affects me physically. I know that everybody might says “keep the positive vibes”, “don’t give up”, and those “love yourself”. But, haha, hun? You know what, keeping the positive vibes and loving myself is not that simple. If you were in this condition that you hate, you might wanna flee, i bet, and i guess, fleeing itself is the implementation of loving yourself that i never could’ve done due to my very own condition.

So, you might say that i’m giving up? Yes, i’m about to give up. I’m very weary.

The (very troublesome) unification of Vere/Akielos

@exy-king @time-limit what is politics LOL,,, Im just going to answer this relatively paragraph by paragraph to keep it simple and I’ll also point out im not familiar with Australian history so if anything I say clashes then my bad lol

Delpha would definitely have to go under independent rule for several main reasons: 

Like you said, Vere and Akielos need to compromise and hold Delpha equally so there isn’t an underlying power struggle of “well THIS country has more land” blah blah blah 

Delpha is an area that has already dealt with forced intermixing (if im remembering correctly) So the people of Delpha would probably accede to the idea of independence rather than secede back and forth between the two countries. 

^^This means the people of Delpha appreciate their King’s independence which leads to one less civil war having to be worried about

I see Delpha as the beginning of city-states in Akielos and Vere especially if it will still be under rule of the King’s just advised by a council

(^^Nikandros will probably be put in charge of this council. Not only would it make sense because he is definitely one of the more higher ranked men in the kingdom, has served at Kingsmeet and as a Kyroi, and showed substantial loyalty to the King of Akielos it is the only fair political move that I can see being made for Nikandros? Like, yes Nikandros loves Damen but realistically after all the bullshit he was put through to have someone else be given that power.....BIG YIKES. Because we gotta remember Nikandros is a born bred noble/politician, loyalty to a king can really only be pushed so far)

The more public intermixing of cultures would be very healthy for other areas of the two countries to see, plus the fact that Delpha is a more wealthy land would show strong trade and power. With the right address, Laurent/Damen could make it seem like Delpha is so powerful because the kingdoms/people are combined

Avoiding Mutiny 101

Laurent and Damen would both have to immediately address the insurrection of both The Regent and Kastor:

The Regent: Pretty simple honestly? He has done a lot of damage but many veretian (and akielon) soldiers/nobles and the council witnessed the evidence against The Regent’s betrayal. Laurent would just have to have it written in the books (history/veretian newsletter??) What happened and the evidence behind it. Once it is made absolutely public that The Regent is the reason King Aleron died, and his mutiny against Crown Prince Laurent, like almost anything he has said will be put to deep shame along with anyone who still agrees to it. “Did you hear prince Laurent did this-” “That’s just what The Regent wanted us to believe. He also said Akielos was the cause of our King’s Death.” So now not only is Laurent in the clear (for the most part, it will always be a gradual step-by-step) but Akielos is no longer being held responsible for the death of their king. So basically what Laurent is gonna need to do is exactly what The Regent was gonna do to Laurent: shit talk the fuck out of him. (Honestly?? Yaaaaaass) 

Kastor: A lot of people are gonna be like “damen would never crap-talk his brother bc Kastor was family!!” like....thats great and true and all but politically that’s not going to work in Damen’s favor and knowing Laurent he is gonna wanna get this done asap. It will need to be made public that Kastor attempted to kill Damen (The originally plan seemed to be: Damen is framed for Laurent’s murder (if he doesn’t actually attempt to kill the surly fucker), and is then put on trial and killed for treason). That’s definitely murder/treason by proxy. More people sway to Damen side, let everyone know he killed King Theomedes (who everyone seemed to respect) and Kastor’s supporters diminish by quite a bit. 

Running a country is all about keeping the lower/working class people in a desired group mindset and you usually do that by having a hero, a victim, and a villian (having the reg ppl be the victims earns brownie points)

In the beginning both countries are going to to have people who dislike their own rulers, and then have the other monarch to top it off. So while the real work is slowly getting done, the first few months would have to be complete slander towards those who opposed Laurent/Damen (think of an Ad Hominem type of politics) 

Delpha flourishes and Marlas...gains a Palace??

YES Laurent and Damen are canonly building a palace in Marlas (see: The Summer Palace). I’m gonna shoot for the stars and say that it will be similar to what King Louis XIII did when he built Versailles (WHICH WAS VERY EXPENSIVE so that’s why I’m confused because it seemed that maybe a year at most had went by and Damen/Laurent were already building a new palace that would have to include both Veretian and Akielan style/aesthetic, I can’t imagine that being cheap and so I assume the people if Vere/Akielos could become angry at this. Seeing new Kings, one of them you probs dont trust, spend a bunch on a palace?? YIKES) BUT, it has been done before in history.

Training soldiers together is a great way to intermix the people. I think building multiple training grounds across Akielos/Vere and forcing the soldiers to interact and work together. 

What’s really good for an economy, forces soldiers to fight for each other, and also could destroy nasty internal nationalism? A WAR!!

Laurent and Damen are gonna have to pick fights with other countries outside Patras/Vask (and do this after they stabilize alliances with Patras/Vask

Let me tell you about M.A.I.N.

To unite their people and start and win a war they will need to:

Glorify the military as a way to draft more soldiers (Akielos already seems to have a glorified military so wee)

Showcase Alliances: “Vere and Akielos will protect each other!” “Our alliances with Patras/Vask are stronger bc of Vere/Akielos uniting!” Obligation to fight if allied nation does, shit like that

Imperialism: steal land for trade?? idk this one isnt that important unless you can think of how it can be useful

Nationalism!!: THIS IS A BIG DEAL!!! Nationalism is and always will be a current issue. Nationalism and Religion are the two main big reasons a war happens. Vere/Akielos both suffer from obvious nationalism. (Please keep in mind that Nationalism in M.A.I.N. is not friendly competition. Its a very unhealthy and intense devotion to a country and leads to xenophobia). By having a war, Vere/Akielos can be like “Look at this other country we are fighting. We are much better than that stupid, pathetic, country. Let’s unite and fight and take!! (there’s the imperialism!). 

Language of the people!

Marriage and Heirs!

I know you said this was a whole other bag of cats but its a VERY IMPORTANT bag of cats

Uniting in marriage is a very common way of uniting/creating alliances. 

It doesn’t always bring the people together BUT if the marriage works and the politics move swimmingly and the heir becomes beloved (in our world, if it was a male heir it was like FUUUUUCKK YAAAASS QUEEN) it can create a really strong bond!

If you have an heir

Smudge that idea away all you want it is the main reason for marriage alliances.

So Damen and Laurent get married. Now they have united their kingdom through marriage, yay! Step one complete

Damen has an heir. It can be from Jokaste or a Vaskian woman doesn’t matter 

It has to be Damen. Maybe Akielos won’t care who the mother is bc that’s their culture but we need to worry about Vere’s culture too now. 

If Damen chooses an heir that’s Akielon or a Vaskian, it will probably be more of an insult to the Veretian people if anything. 

There’s...no Veretian bloodline...where is Vere’s stability?? 

This means, going by history that if Damen doesn’t have an heir that’s half Veretian........the marriage is honestly kind of moot 

Damen will have to eventually have a child with a Veretian woman (noble, most likely). That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll have to marry her. I think They could get around that by claiming the baby as “not a bastard bc the mother is a surrogate” 

BUT YEAH heirs are super important so that’s honestly how I see it needing to go

Sure i live in Canada and my dad and some of our relatives live in the states right now, but we are probably gonna be fine, for now, as Chinese immigrants--Well, we might be inconvenient??? at best??? My dad is living in U.S with a working visa and it seems that immigration in general is tying up so he probably can’t stay in the states for long. He didn’t come up to Canada to spend Chinese new year with me, one of the reasons is that i didn’t ask him to and i dont think we should spend a lot of time together anyways, but also it’s probably not so convenient for him to leave the country right now. Also, i know he doesnt wanna work in Canada--the country where both of us hold our citizenship in, and the possibility of working in China is another can of worm that i dont wanna open right now; so that’s kinda bad for our family’s long term future. But this is all manageable, compare to a lot of other people right now. 

U.S--the neighbouring country next door, the most influential global power in this time and day is undergoing a real and terrifying transition into a fascist state. Trump makes it abundantly clear that he is a fucking nazi. Muslim immigrants can’t even get out of the country anymore if they aren’t prepare of returning to the country ever again, and Muslim refugees can’t get in even though they have no other place to turn to. This is terrible that this is making a horrific and devastating impact on so many innocent lives and January isn’t even fucking over yet. But also, this is what he’s fucking capable of, he is capable of turning the country into actual Nazi state right now. 

I know this may not be any imminent threat but Trump’s attitude with China isn’t friendly, at all. In fact, China’s military officials say it’s a real possibility to enter a into a war with US right now. NOW, first, im fucking sick and tired of hearing antagonistic language towards China. I get it, you all see China as this looming shadow from the east, threatening to its smaller neighbouring countries that are desperately trying to US’s fucking dick to counter it. While I’m a little alarmed by China’s general military mobilizations, i honest to god don’t think PRC is up for annexing countries--face it, that’s what you all fucking fear. lol. Geopolitical control eh, well, The country gains geopolitical power by solidifying control over territories that we historically owned, not through expansion and annexation of other countries. So let me tell you, fucking relaxed.  Not only do we never have the historical tradition of annexing countries, the governing party’s got 1.3 billion people to manage and control, it doesnt have the fucking energy to manage and control more people with MUCH higher chance of causing heavy political and social unrests. They already tighten up on control over speech and access to information outside of Chinese sites, from what i heard, not only can you not access websites like fucking moodle or onq to do your homework, it’s technically illegal to fucking use VPN to gain access. If US-China relationship collapses--and it has the real possibility to, there would be an international conflict and that shit is gonna have devastating impact on me, my family, Chinese immigrants like me in North America and especially U.S, and billions of others in China. 

On the other hand, Chinese and Asian populations aren’t actively engaging in political protests, we are nOT there, so how do we expect others to do our works for us and fight for our rights???? Even worse, some of us are actively showing our lack of regard towards the interests of other minority groups. I dont know how the fuck some middle age economically privileged Chinese uncles and aunts voted for Trump, but they fucking existed and they made a difference. What do they think they are??? ethnic white people???? They went to fucking universities for commerce but they are dumb enough to legit thought Trump's interesting statements about US-China relation are signals of positive changes????? I also know these moms living in economic comfort are terrified for their children’s future, because they feared a lower number of their children are getting into ivy leagues in the future under Affirmative Action. LMAO!!! AS IF LATINO AND BLACK MOTHERS AREN’T ALEADY AFRAID???? TBH THEIR FEARS ARE PROBABLY MORE VALID THAN YOURS???? RE the Obama post: I see what you're saying but... he's not president of the world/MENA, he was president of the US? Under social contract theory don't individual governments have mostly a responsibility to their own country? So I think it would make sense that's what he cares about (and make sense for that to be how he's evaluated). And if U.S. interests conflict with best interest of people in other countries, Obama looks after his people and foreign governments look after their citizenry. No?

i mean yes from a political science/realist paradigm of international conflict theory perspective that is in fact his job, but the question is whether you accept or reject that whole concept.... especially when the man (and political party) in question posits himself as the Defender of Freedom For All regardless of religion/race/class/nationality/gender/orientation/etc and then turns around and indiscriminately drones civilians who are guilty of the crime of existing in the wrong fucking country

the point of the original post (which wasn’t eloquently worded or anything bc it was more of a thinking-out-loud type of post that i never expected to get more than like 15 notes) was that you cannot pretend that you are against racism, against homophobia, against misogyny, against classism, etc etc etc if the only inequality and/or injustice you care about is within your own society, and that society’s power is built on the exploitation and oppression of those very same marginalized groups, but on a global scale instead of a national scale. 

(for the record this is why fascists are invariably very nationalistic, and why leftists see nationalism as one of their largest stumbling blocks, because nationalism as a concept binds people together according to their culture/citizenship and makes those people most harmed by these oppressive forces sympathize with their oppressors instead of the oppressed people in other countries, because it makes them think of the world in terms of whatever is good for America [insert any other country] as a political state being good for them as Americans [insert any other nationality]. but thats not necessarily true because such a small group of very powerful elites ever really see much of that benefit. if anything, the most good that comes from american dominance on the international stage, in terms of the average person’s benefit, is the level of security [from the aggression of other nations, at least, bc y’know police brutality and poverty are very much threats to security] in our day-to-day lives we are able to enjoy. but that security comes at the expense of real, observable suffering across the world)

i feel like thats still not very clear/kinda rambly/im not even reading what im writing bc nobodys paying me for this shit so i Just Dont Care Enough about it to put a tremendous amount of effort to write this argument tbh, so maybe an illustrative example will help!

during the general election season a few months ago, i saw some story floating around facebook about how hillary clinton met with this young girl from yemen who had lived through tremendous political and social upheaval, and had escaped her life as a child bride. clinton wanted to know if they could get her to the united states, pay for her education here, etc. that’s a feel-good story, right? a larger-than-life political figure going out of her way to try to improve the life of a girl who has endured tremendous hardship in a country most westerners don’t even stop to think about, if they even know it exists at all? well, not really. why not?  because hillary clinton, as barack obama’s secretary of state, was instrumental in the conflict in yemen that created such horrendous circumstances for this young girl, through the US government’s alliance with the government of Saudi Arabia. yes, lets get her to the united states or some other western country so that she can receive a quality education without living every day of her life in fear. how noble a suggestion! but that completely ignores WHY her home country is in such a terrible state, WHY she is unsafe there, WHY she was deprived of the right to grow up and have a healthy childhood because she was born within the wrong borders by no fault of her own. 

ask yourself why this girl’s life would have mattered more to the american government if her parents were american. ask yourself if that’s fair. ask yourself why it’s okay for thousands of other girls to be left in those very same circumstances, except they were never lucky enough to claw their way out, because they never had the good fortune of catching a powerful politician’s attention on an individual level and making that politician aware of the direct, immediate suffering their actions caused. 

if your answer is “it’s okay because the US government has something to gain from it, and not everybody can win” then i can understand the rationale behind that (intellectually, at least), but don’t you EVER make yourself out to be some sort of “great defender of disadvantaged peoples,” because if your empathy ends at your country’s borders, you either have a pretty fundamental misunderstanding of the “privilege politics” you’re so invested in, or an extremely fucking twisted understanding of justice

What was your best experience on drugs or alcohol? alcohol: the night i just moved out of home 2 weeks ago. my roommate invited a friend over, and we all had fun and played never have i ever and i flirted with this really cute guy and had so much fun. i hadn’t really had any experiences like that before because i was - anyway. it was nice to feel like a normal 19 year old just for a second weed: either the time i was drunk and high at our housewarming party and went to the park and felt like i was on a fucking rollercoaster, or the time i got super cooked after work and had a shower which felt amazing and then went back to my room and listened to beautiful people beautiful problems. i didn’t hallucinate per se, but i closed my eyes and could like see the lyrics “blue is the colour of the planet from the view above”. it was like i was in outer space and could see the earth and i was so relaxed and it was so magical mdma: my halloween party! there were so many people and no one knew i was high and we had a mad dance party and i met some of our neighbours and i just had so much fun talking to everyone and Living.

What was your worst experience on drugs or alcohol? alcohol: being around boring people when drunk is boring. especially because when i’m drinking i really want to have a good and fun time.  weed: ahh i have anxiety so i used to get a few panic attacks when i was smoking mdma: eugh it was my friends 21st at the time and we took mdma and i thought it wasnt kicking in because all we did was sit in bed and talk. literally so boring. im so mad that i wasted my first time like that

As your walking down the street you find a suitcase full of money sitting next to a parked car, would you take it? nah, i’d probably hand it in to the police. actually, i dont trust the police so i’d probably google what to do with it. but probably police because i cant have stolen money or give it to someone else. 

51. If you found that a close friend has AIDS, would you still hang out with them? not hanging out with someone because of that has literally never even crossed my mind

52. In front of you are 10 pistols, 5 of which are loaded. If you survive you’d receive 100 million dollars. Would you be willing to place 1 to your head and pull the trigger? nah. i’m actually going places now days

55. If you could live forever, would you want to? yeah probably. i’d like to give it a trial run though. i’m very anxious, so being lonely and immortal might make it worse. but at the same time, being immortal might make it easier to not give a shit and to be less anxious

Whatever You Need, There’s An App For That

With technology as the ruling force in our lives, we’re always in-the-know about all the coolest trends and the latest apps. As women who have to multi-task day in and day out to run households, handle office affairs and maintain the semblance of a social life, any technological advancement that aids and assists in making our lives simpler is automatically a Godsend. Luckily for us, there’s a plethora of new apps out there that are created specifically to make going on with our daily lives a cinch.

Here are my favourite apps/websites that I browse use practically every single day:

1.       Uber – Combine the difficulty in getting a kaali peeli at rush hour (or any hour for that matter) in Mumbai and my inability to drive and any app that transports me comfortably and inexpensively from one place to another goes right up on my list. Enter Uber. TBH, I prefer the UX of the app, their cars and their drivers (haven’t had a bad experience yet) to any other taxi service and though they don’t have any exceptional distinguishing feature, I’m an Uber loyalist.

2.       Swiggy – From ordering lunch at work on the days I don’t have (or particularly like) my dabba to my midnight cravings, Swiggy is my go-to. I’ve had terrible experiences with other food delivery apps including last-minute cancellations, ridiculously long delivery times and just downright bad service. However, it’s been so far so good with Swiggy. And now they’ve added Swiggy Pop with its assorted range of cheaper than menu price dishes. Sold!

3.       Nykaa – It’s got over 1500 brands, including some of the best international ones, and an incomparable range of products across categories like makeup, skincare, hair care, appliances, fragrances and even stuff for men. And they deliver pretty much anywhere in the country in about 3 days tops. For those of you who like to read and learn about the world of beauty, they have a YouTube channel, an online beauty magazine and even their very own social network.

4.       StyleNook – While I would have generally picked a more known ecommerce website, I’ve been hooked on StyleNook ever since I discovered it a year and a half ago. Fill out a style profile with your preferences, your sizes and your budget, and get a curated box with 5 specially handpicked items to suit your taste delivered to your doorstep. Try it all on in the comfort of your own home, pay ONLY for what you choose to keep and return the rest. It’s like ordering yourself a fun surprise every now and then – exciting and remarkably simple.

5.       Flipboard – It’s important to keep up with all the latest goings-on in the world, be it in the fields of entertainment, science, politics or economics. However, with so many different means of consuming the abundance of information out there, it becomes quite the task to keep up. That’s where Flipboard comes in. Simply choose the topics you’re interested in and Flipboard creates a curate magazine for each. Flip through these stories, read them in detail or even curate your own magazine – this award-winning app has an easy-to-use interface that really manages to keep you on top of your game.

Apps/websites that came close but didn’t quit make the cut

1.       Period Tracker, My Calendar – It’s a fun way to keep a track on your menstrual cycle but if you’re like clockwork and don’t need an app to know your dates, this one doesn’t make the cut.

2.       Evernote – I used to love this app to make notes and often used it as my own personal diary, but it’s started to hang and keeps prompting me to get the paid premium version. Umm, no thanks.

3.       Duolingo – A language learning app that is great to pick up on the spoken basics of a multitude of languages. However, it’s not too strong on grammar so I left this out of the list.

4.       Audible – An Amazon company, this app sells quite the assortment of digital audiobooks and audio versions of magazines and newspapers. Perfect for those hours spent travelling.

5.       Elevate – This is a great way to sharpen the mind by solving language- and number-based problems. But you need to pay to get access to its Pro levels.
