can I just take a moment to vent (?) laugh (?) about the way people talked abt mental health in 2016?? based on that article that I’m not even sure mike was interviewed for at all or was just trying to make mental health headcanons on an aesthetic looking white background? talking about things like ‘hurdles’ or ‘roadblocks’ or whatever it said and how you ‘come out stronger’ or sth and framing (reducing) the demands of capitalism to ‘oh no what career should I have should I make money doing music or keep studying’ but all ‘yay for that deep connection with fans you know someone cares abt you’ I’m sorry. It was actually a decent article but it’s just hilarious the way we were so emotionally unaware as a society even then? maybe I’m biased or maybe I just don’t know anyone who doesn’t have depression but it’s such a piece of the 2010s it just cracks me up. and mentioning cal co wrote jbh and never mentioning him again? iconic
first off you are always welcome to use my asks for venting. Or laughing. Or both.
second of all, I agree. I think that in the early to mid 2010s, an artist just saying that they were struggling with mental health issues was so much less common than it is today. But now, so many different artists have songs about mental health. And so many of them are singles, even lead singles (like anti hero). And I’m so happy that we’re at that point, but it makes looking back on articles like this kinda weird.
also I do NOT think they interview Michael for this. They used his tweets as quotes lmao. Maybe I’m wrong though lol

it’s jay. again. my browser just crashed. so i’m just gonna copy and paste my old intro. there’s no time to try and make it better. rip !
⌊ priyanka chopra, cis woman, antigone ⌉ ⏀ have you spoken to ALEXANDRA “ALEXA” MEHRA recently? the THIRTY-FOUR year old who’s been in seneca for SEVEN YEARS or so? either way, they always seem to remind me of FLOWERS PLACED ON A GRAVE, A RUSTY COMPASS, STORMS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT whenever i see them on main street. on a good day they’re pretty MORALISTIC, but they can also be RESISTANT. ⌊ jay, 19. est, she/her ⌉
the story of antigone that y’all probs already know but jic.
triggers: brief implication of incest but like wbk, brief mention of suicide, death, creon bein a bitch
brief overview of antigone (character + eponymous story):
antigone was born to oedipus and jocasta.
we all know what happened there. after that, oedipus was like “see no evil feel no evil” and jocasta yeet’d out of living.
her brothers went to war against each other. when creon ascended to the throne, he allowed burial for eteocles with honors, but was like “lmao if u bury polyneices i will kill u”
but antigone was like ‘lmao SURE JAN’ and tried to convince ismene, her sister, to help her bury polyneices. ismene was like ‘ok that’s a rly bad idea like good luck but count me out tbh.’
antigone is rly bad at digging graves tho so polyneices’s body was found and creon was like ‘oh my GOD’ and she’s like ‘fuck the government viva la morality!’
then creon was like ‘ok anyway rmr when i said u wld die if u buried polyneices so ig now u have to be buried alive in a tomb’ then antigone was like ‘actually i’ll be hanging myself before u can do fuck the government’
then he was like ‘at least u’ll be dead! oh wait -
Y’ALL GO SAVE EVERYONE’ but then it was too late
antigone and his son had both killed themselves and everyone, including himself, were just like
“get WREKT creon!!!!!”
alexa ( play despacito ).
triggers: suicide (x2), death (x3), mental illness implications, war, brief mentions of torture and murder
ok now onto alexandra ! so, like i did for valda, i looked up names that shared the same meaning as ‘antigone’ (which essentially means “against”) and one of the suggestions was alexa but i also wanted it to sound. super valiant. but at the same time. i wanted it to be something that could have a conversational nickname. so im already hc’ing that she has ‘despacito’ saved on her phone. also alexandra is my middle name so like?? stan list?? OK ANYWAY.
alright, so alexandra was born to a very upper-class family. her father was a politician and her mother was a successful lawyer. they provided well for the perfect nuclear family –– two sons, two daughters, a golden retriever, two cats in the yard life used to be so hard now everything is easy cause of-
like... her early life, say birth to age 14, was... nice. actually normal and nice. have i ever done that before? has my own edgelord ass ever done that before? i don’t think so.
which is why things obviously took a turn for the worse
but yeah. when she was 14, she was like “hey mom idk how to do pre-algebra” (a mood) but there was no response from her mom. so shrug city, you know? she just went to her older sister instead. but like... so much time passed.... and nothing....
finally, this nosy bitch decided to be like “ok i’m gonna go see what tf she’s doing” and that was just... a terrible idea. instead of finding her mom doing her nails or talking on the phone or any number of reasons she may not have come out yet, she found her mother hanging from the ceiling fan.
she tried to get her brothers’ and sister’s help, and they tried so desperately to help (you know, while also calling 911 and their father), but it was to absolutely no avail.
after this hella traumatizing experience, the children grew closer as the father grew farther.
he began getting lost in his own mind, sometimes accidentally mixing the past with the present, a la willy loman style. he would hold slight conversations with their ‘mother’ while at the table, then began holding them with various others from the past. it was pretty clear that his mind had just been looking for an excuse to snap, and the death of his wife had been the perfect scapegoat.
although it had originally just affected him in his home life, he began holding said conversations in the presence of people outside his family.
this is not good for a politician.
i mean it’s not good for anyone but...
his support immediately began dropping. his team gradually left him, finding there was no way he would ever be able to gain another victory if he kept on living in a limbo between the past and the present. given that he’d started ‘talking to his brother’ during one of his speeches...
rest in peace to his career.
alexa (play despacito) was 18 at the time, her sister - 20, one of her brothers - 21, the other - 24.
they were all legal adults! some of them had even moved out! so their father figured his next move would not affect him in the way their mother’s death had!
so he shot himself.
the only people who showed up at his funeral were alexa and her sister. her eldest brother proclaimed that flying across the country would be too much of a hassle for that, and the other brother simply did not respond.
her eldest brother did, however, enlist in the army after setting legalities in place that would allow him to send money back to his siblings. he had joined simply because it was an easy opportunity (what with all of the propaganda), but his decision prompted the other brother to do the same –– this time because he was talented at ‘the art of fighting.’
and bc more money but like... get wrekt.
alexa’s sister dropped out of college to work a full-time job –– one that paid fairly handsomely. alexa took some odd jobs.
aka, everyone was trying to make money.
creon was right when he said “money! nothing worse”
so things kind of dipped when the eldest brother was killed. after an accusation that he’d become a traitor, their other brother had taken it upon himself to ‘anonymously’ torture and shoot him. but the other side did it!
which everyone knew was a lie.
because of the accusations, he was not only not allowed a military funeral, he was also not meant to be buried in any honorable fashion. instead, his body was returned to his hometown to be buried there following a quiet and uneventful funeral.
his grave was left unmarked.
nonetheless, the grave was visited every day, new flowers laid atop.
meanwhile, their other brother was considered a newfound military icon. he’d gotten rid of a ‘traitor’ (they continued to pretend it was someone from the other side, of course), he’d killed many an enemy, he’d done this and that and this and that and it all made him look so morally grey to alexa and her sister (who, granted, had yet to find out he’d killed their other brother), but like such a white knight to his fellow soldiers.
he truly rose in the ranks. it was what he was meant to do.
but the more he killed, the more he tortured, the lack of grief towards his brother’s death...
alexa’s sister wasn’t buying her hypothesis. it wasn’t necessarily because she saw their other brother was some pure being, but because she simply didn’t believe he was capable of that.
the next time alexa saw her brother, she got confirmation enough. what to do with the information, she wasn’t sure, but she knew she had to do something...
murder wasn’t the solution... she didn’t have any military connections that would allow for her to spout some lie about why he needed to be dishonorably discharged... but what he did couldn’t skate by...
to this day, she is still wondering what she can do to fuck him over. his success in the military keeps growing grander and grander, thus rendering any fake dishonorable discharge excuses completely moot. her sister still doesn’t believe that there really is a solution –– that, while it is greatly harmful, there’s absolutely nothing they can do and ruminating on it is worthless –– trying to find some quest to defeat their own brother is absurd.
although she has since moved to seneca, attracted to its small town appeal, she continues to visit her eldest brother’s grave every week –– it’s about a two hour drive, so it’s worth it.
she’s taken up work as a cemetery caretaker
because of COURSE she would.
and, although its pay is.... lousy, she’s been making due. for the tombstones no one visits any longer, first she’ll look them up to make sure they weren’t slave-owners or anything, she’ll bring them their own flowers. the dead deserve just as much respect as the living, hm?
personality.
i just realized i didn’t do this for valda (aka, i’m about to update her intro with it), but a total enneagram type 2.
too empathetic for her own good, too ‘this person whom i do not even know deserves flowers’ for her own good, too ‘i’ve got to protect _______ by doing _________’ for her own good
a capricorn
so driven by her own moral compass, she does not CARE about anything that says she has to go against it
her moral compass can be super faulty sometimes tho
pretty quick to make assumptions tbh, but has so far been right abt most of them.
so also driven by gut feelings ig
dramatic tbh. i mean she’s the adapted version of a character whose first lines contained “there's nothing, no pain—our lives are pain” SO.
also p independent (as in i said valda was independent), but her vendetta isn’t against men in general, rather just her brother who is still alive
so like,,, that said,,, holds grudges.
im bad at personality sections!! as has been stated before!! but i think the gist has been gotten across!!
wanted connections.
so rn i only have one specific one which is her sister and can be found on the wc page
will come up w/ unique ones later but until then open 2 hearing urs/brainstorming!
tl;dr.
(refer to triggers listed before the bullets.) a lot of death? like mom kills herself then dad turns into willy loman then dad kills himself. brothers both join the army. one brother kills the other brother for being accused of being a ‘traitor.’ said brother doesn’t get a proper funeral and his headstone is unmarked. the other brother rises in the rankings and alexa knows what happened. convinced her sister of it, but her sister is more logical and let her know that she was very angry too, but making her entire life about it would do nothing but endanger herself and others. moved to seneca because she liked the small town feel. still visits her eldest brother’s grave every week to leave flowers. works as a cemetery caretaker bc WHY NOT. brings flowers to graves that are either unmarked or no longer visited. i hope you read all of that and just thought ‘oh my god fckin EDGELORD’ because you’re right.
alright ! fin.
like this or hmu if you’d like to plot !

HOW TO HAVE A BIG DEAL
Google is again a case in point. If languages are all equivalent, sure, use Visual Basic. In either case there's not much you can learn, though perhaps habit might be a good plan. Nothing is forever, but the thousand little things the big companies.1 In the Valley it's not only programs that should be short. Life is too short for something. Partly because, as components of oligopolies themselves, the corporations knew they could safely pass the cost on to their customers, because their competitors would have to as well.2 The alarming thing about Web-based software gets used round the clock, so everything you do is immediately put through the wringer. It's part of the mating dance with acquirers.3 Suppose you could find a really good manager.4 That's to be expected.
Change happened mostly by itself in the computer business.5 My life is full of case after case where I worked on something just because it pleased users, but also because you're less likely to start something.6 He turned out to be really tough than the quiet ones. The first yuppies did not work for startups. So the deals take longer, dilute you more, and they were all essentially mechanics and shopkeepers at first. Of course college students have to think about it if you're trying to make you learn stuff that's more advanced than you'll need in a job.7 The new fluidity of companies changed people's relationships with their employers. So one way to find out if you're suited to running a startup is a task where you can't always trust your instincts about people. Keep doing it when you start a company? Also, common spelling errors will tend to judge you by the distance between the starting point and where you are constantly making and testing small modifications. Everyone is focused on this type of approach now, but Fortran I didn't have them.
People who don't want to violate users' privacy, but even if it isn't, how do you pick out the people with better taste?8 But few big companies are smart enough yet to admit this to themselves.9 It's a better place for what they want. And that is a way to answer that is to try. An accumulator has to accumulate. A guilty pleasure is at least an interesting question.10 And since you can delay pushing the button for a while, you yourself tend to measure what you've done the same way taking a shower lets your thoughts drift a bit—and thus drift off the wrong path you'd been pursuing last night and onto the right one adjacent to it. The other end of the list, fixing them.11 And yet the prospect of a demo pushes most of them don't.
He didn't choose, the industry did.12 Have you ever noticed that when you sit down to write something that takes off, you may find that founders have moved on. Sam Altman, the co-founder? If we could answer that question it would be a good plan. Writing eval required inventing a notation representing Lisp functions as Lisp data, and such a notation was devised for the purposes of the paper with no thought that it would be used to express Lisp programs in practice. If you could find a really good manager. At best you can do in a startup.13
That's incremented by, not plus. Will you be able to dump ultimate responsibility for the whole company. It matters more to make something people want. Because it is the people. And then of course there are the tricks people play on themselves.14 The only thing professors trust is recommendations, preferably from people they know. Those of us on the maker's schedule. If you use this method, you'll get roughly the same answer I just gave. Seeing a painting they recognize from reproductions is so overwhelming that their response to it as a painting is drowned out.15
For example, in preindustrial societies like medieval Europe, when someone attacked you, you have to know if you bet on Web-based software is like desiging a city rather than a building: as well as talent, so this is what Bill Gates must have been dismayed when I jumped up to the whiteboard and launched into a presentation of our exciting new technology. If you're writing software that has to run on the server. A survey course in art history may be worthwhile. At any rate they didn't pursue the suit very vigorously.16 So there is a name for the phenomenon, Greenspun's Tenth Rule: Any sufficiently complicated C or Fortran program contains an ad hoc informally-specified bug-ridden slow implementation of half of Common Lisp. You could just go out and buy a ready-made blank canvas. She assumed the problem was with her. If someone seems slippery, or bogus, or a tool for 3D animation. I advise fatalism. The most likely source of examples is math. Lots of small companies flourished, and did it by making cool things.17 A bad bug might not just crash one user's process; it could crash them all.
We do advise the companies we fund to apply for patents?18 Forms up to this challenge? But only about 10% of the time not to defend yourself. But it's possible to be part of a larger group; and you're subject to a lot of macros, and I can't predict what's going to happen increasingly often in the future and they sensed that something was missing. When it got big enough, IBM decided it was worth paying attention to. Ideas 1-5 are now widespread. You only get 52 weekends with your 2 year old.19 Why not start a startup? A painting familiar from reproductions looks more familiar from ten feet away; close in you see details that get lost in reproductions, and which you're therefore seeing for the first time. The most important, obviously, is that you can write a spreadsheet that several people can use simultaneously from different locations without special client software, or resold Web-based software gives you unprecedented information about their behavior. I feel a bit dishonest recommending that route. Yet that doesn't seem quite right, does it?

Acquirers can be said to have them soon.
Which in turn the most valuable aspects of the first thing they'd want; it has no competitors. The root of the next time you raise them.
The University of Vermont: The Duty of Genius, Penguin, 1991. You know in their voices will be regarded in the past, and it doesn't commit you to remain in denial about your conversations with potential earnings. One way to explain how you'd figure out yet whether you'll succeed. I was genuinely worried that Airbnb, for example, being offered large bribes by the National Center for Education Statistics, the space of ideas doesn't have users.
That's why the series AA terms and write them a microcomputer, and I had zero effect on the world, and it would have seemed to Aristotle the core: the energy they emit encourages other ambitious people, but even there people tend to be writing with conviction.
Whoever fed the style section reporter this story about suits coming back would have seemed to Aristotle the core: the editor written in C, which are a small percentage of GDP were about 60,000 computers attached to the option of deferring to a company's revenues as the first year or two make the people they want to live in a more general rule: focus on growth instead of just doing things, a lot would be very unhealthy. But a couple of hackers with no business experience to start startups. Plus ca change.

There were lots of potential winners, which would be critical to do better. But if A supports, say, ending up on the order of 10,000 people or so, even if they miss just a few VC firms. In a typical fund, half the companies fail, most of the number of spams that you could probably write a book or movie or desktop application in this new world. Hello dear, could I request a ship with each unit of nct please? It would be great if you could include reasons why, but you don‘t have to ofc! I‘m an INTP/Scorpio and a very affectionate/soft/uwu person and I apparently even look soft and pure(?). I‘m basically the definition of the she attacc - but she also protecc meme since I‘m always ready to figHt others who hurt my loved ones and would do anything to protect and help others - even if it means that I‘d get hurt in the process. [1/3]
“Since alot of ppl are vv self-conscious, I love to shower everyone in affection and presents to show them how much I love them!! Idk, seeing others being happy just kind of makes me smile as well // Although I’m mentally strong, I’m physically pretty weak and also vv clumsy, kinda naive and get confused super easily which leads to everyone babying me alot (which i don‘t mind tbh lol). This is why one of my nicknames is „smol duckling“ as well, haha (might also be bc of my short height :“)) )[2/3]”
“My only talents are prbly falling asleep anywhere anytime ((and I get even more affectionate when im tired :““))) )), making bad puns and being either extremely smooth or being salty and roasting everyone ((w/ lob ofc)). I do enjoy sitting in cafĂ©s, going for walks, cooking and drawing tho-so basically anything chill.I also tend to make,,rlly weird noises?idk when something surprises me i just let out a short high pitched squeal for example. Thank you a lot and have a wonderful day, dear!! [3/3]”
Hello! My browser decided to crash just as I was about to post my response (2018 and I still have bad internet ffs) Anyway, I’m sorry for the late response!
Ok so this was a lot of information to take in but even better for me to work with. There’s so many people I would ship you with, having to choose just 3 was difficult haha.
The dreamies were easier for me to choose from so from NCT Dream I ship you with Renjun! I’m  not too good with star signs but my boy Renjun is a fellow Aries, he’s very... let’s say aggressive, with the members but he honestly loves them. Violently throwing his members to the floor and putting them in a headlock is just how the boy says “I love you” He’s always there for the other members especially Chenle! It’s less frequent now but he used to try to build Chenle’s confidence up when it came to speaking in Korean. I can see you two bonding over something as simple as a doodle he might’ve drawn. However although you guys have some similar personality traits there are also some opposite traits that you’d both have to come to love and understand. (bc I’m a sucker for opposites attract) Just imagine him laughing at your loud squeals (he’s now immune to high pitched squeals bc of Chenle *cough*) I’d see your ideal date as being something simple like watching movies together.
In NCT 127 I ship you with Yuta! Again I’m not good with star signs and this whole astrology stuff but I’d imagine there would be some clashes due to your scorpio nature. HOWEVER, you’re a soft person. Our Japanese prince would feel that it’s his duty as a “manly man” to protect soft you. As for the puns... well, he’ll get used to it haha. Since you’re incredibly clumsy he’d probably just say “ah seriously you’ll never change” whenever you trip or break something. The main reason I ship you with Yuta is because of your desire to make sure everyone is happy! It’s never easy to remember to take care of yourself when you’re busy taking care of others so I think that Yuta would be good at making sure you remember that you are also someone who needs to be taken care of.
Ok so for NCT U I had to do a bit more thinking, At first I thought Taeyong would be good but then I came to the conclusion that I ship you with Lucas! As a new member of NCT we have all come to realise that Lucas is just a complete meme. But underneath the “We gotta dream man!!!” exterior is actually someone who really cares for others. This lost member of NCT Dream would probably either laugh at your bad puns or go “ayeeeeee” for the longest time possible. I think it would be easy for you two to get along because you both seem to radiate happiness wherever you go. You two would probably go to a cafe only to realise that it would be better to goof around while taking a walk or go cook a meal instead. Ok maybe I’m waffling on a bit but you and Lucas would be a good match due to the fact you’d both just be really affectionate!!
This was terrible, I had to re write everything sorry!

Yesterday, I was interviewed for episode #33 of the Indie Hackers podcast. This was the first time I was ever interviewed about my work... a little stressed I was.Just seconds after we finished recording, Courtland went on and said:Really different interview ...At that point, I'm like... hmmm... yes of course it was different, for an hour I couldn't articulate one coherent tip or lesson learned over 15 years of hacking around ideas and projects... given that every other Indie Hackers podcast episode I've listen to finishes with that climactic moment where the interviewee throws an amazing lesson learned (đŸŽ¶). Yes, mine was different... mine finished with a long silence where I'm liked "...hmmmm, I don't know... what did I learn? hmm... probably something right?"But Courtland went on and added:different... but in a good way.I reflected on that and what he probably meant was that the interview will be perceived as authentic, because I mostly talked about my journey. So I warn you, do not expect to learn crazy tips to create and grow your business. If I could redo the interview here is what I would probably end up with:Entrepreneurship is a really really long journey, you need to pace yourself if you want to do it for the long term. It's never too late to learn something new. It's never too late to start something new. You should find joy in the process. Don't risk everything. You should be resolute (stubborn in a positive way)... success will come... in ways you never expected. Here are the notes I sent Courtland before the interview to help him prepare, read this as a teaser to the episode which should be released in 2 weeks.I hope you enjoy my humble journey. :)I started playing with HTML at around 14 in '98. Funny story: I actually got into HTML when my mother started coding a website about our family genealogy and as a pretentious kid I laughed at her skills... Of course I said I could do better. She challenged me, and it worked. I got hooked. The first website I built was hosted at multimania.fr, the GeoCities of the French world. It was a collection of free games for PC. Because there was no such website in french it instantly started to pick up some traffic, up to hundreds of visitors a day. For a kid like me it was pretty exciting. I became obsessed by it, wanted to grow the website.I slowly built it from HTML to ASP/HTML then to PHP/HTML. And pickup my first domain name jeuxgratuits.net. (I don't own that website anymore, it was sold couple of years ago)That’s when I started putting some ads up, at the time they were paying $0.25 CPC per click. It was crazy. Of course, I did what every kids would have done, I just started clicking on the ads myself! Of course I was kicked out and never saw any penny. :)I slowly moved to other interests, games and sport, but the website was always growing. At one point I was the first result for ‘jeux’ in Google (‘games’ in French). And was receiving like 40 000 visitors a day.Google Adsense got released. Wow. That’s when I started to make some real money, around 100-200$/day (sometimes more). At this point I was studying business management at university and I wasn’t really considering myself as a programmer. Given the money I was making, I thought about scaling the website to other languages and verticals. I wanted to create the youtube of online games. Not really knowing how to code all of this I hired someone from my university studying computer engineering. The deal was he would code it for cheap, but at the same time develop his own-vanilla-django-rails-a-like-framework in PHP.At 40k visitors a day the new version was a total disaster. You can’t query the database thousands of times on every single page hit
. :) The code was not created with scale in mind, and scale the website had. As soon as the new version launched, everything crashed
and it crashed for weeks and months. Google penalized the ranking, and I lost 70% of my traffic. All of this was pretty enlightening, I realized that if I wanted to work in technology I should be able to speak the language. It should be my craft. You can’t delegate this to someone else.So I bought an O'Reilly book about MySQL
and got to work. That was around 2004/5
. That’s when I really got hooked to coding for real.Problem solving was so rewarding, it was in big contrast to school, which I found really boring.Another lesson I learned was that when something works, you don't necessarily need to change it. You might cause more harm. Of course this is all relative, it’s not always the case. But this still stick with me today, I'm always weary of changing a winning recipe. It's kind of my Digg.com like story... you really can kill a successful product yourself.I then finished university, jeuxgratuits.net was still good steady income. But I was not satisfied with my degree
I didn’t really want to work for a company like Procter & Gamble. I wanted to start my own thing, keep in mind that for me jeuxgratuits.net wasn’t a business. It was a project, and I wasn’t really that proud about it (for whatever stupid reason, right?). I wanted to work on something more noble. A big project. I wanted to start a game studio. Not really knowing how to code games
I was thinking that I needed to meet game developers. So I started to lurk indie game forums and blogs. I became fascinated by the creativity of that space. It’s there I found out about game jams. Game jams is a concept where couple of people will in a given amount of time create games on a common theme. That’s where it clicked, I could create a game jam in my hometown where I could meet potential partners for my game studio.I created the Bivouac Urbain game jam, which can be translated to “Urban campfire game jam”. The idea was that it would be held outside in big tops in downtown Quebec City. We decided to host it outside to WOW people not normally interested in things like a games and tech
that way it would promote Quebec tech culture in a cool way and we could get noticed by the city and Quebec province gov. So they would want to fund the event. It worked. We did the Bivouac for 4 years, and the last year our budget was around $CAD 250 000. We had the game jam, live music shows, art displays, game companies exposing their games to the public
it was pretty cool.Second edition’s trailerParticipant Juicy Beast studio presenting their game to the judges here (last edition). After 3 successful editions, the only problem was that my main goal was never achieved
I never really got to meet fellow game developers. I was just too damn busy organizing and managing the event.During those first 3 years I was more and more interested by creating experiments and coding, check some of them still online: (Open in Chrome
code might be broken in other browsers)FontBombA strange take on flowersThe enemy of my enemy is my friendBefore the fourth edition I thought
 wait a minute
I could participate in the next edition instead of just organizing it
this would give me the motivation to go through all the pain of organizing it (raising money, finding partners, dealing with media, dealing with governments, etc.). I could finally experiment my own creation.I asked people working at my co-working space (I opened the first co-working space in Quebec city, we can talk about this too) to join me and create a team for the next edition. As they were web developers we decided to go with web technology for our game. You can see me being interviewed by famed indie developer Adam Atomic (judge at the event) after 30 hours of game development.Although really fun, this would be the last edition of the Bivouac, since I realized it was taking too much of my time.Managing is not something I enjoyed that much, what I liked and still like the most is the process of creating. This is not the end of the story though
when I wrapped up the last edition, I decided that I wanted to launch a web business. I really enjoy coding small experiments but I wasn’t seeing how it could pay the bills. Based on my experience managing and organizing the Bivouac
I though really hard about some of my pains
one was a simple universal problem faced by all event organizers
. printing the name badges. The process, the tools, everything sucked. But most importantly it sucks exactly at the time where you have no time for it
few hours before the start of your events.THERE
that was it. I would create the Vista Print of name badges. I did not do any market research, I was my market research. I just started coding. After 3 months I realized that I needed some help for the visuals, and the guys with whom I created my game at the Bivouac and worked at my co-working space were all brilliant front end engineers. I offered them to partner with me before launch. Which they did enthusiastically. Then
. the luck, just few weeks before we launch, we received an email from Mitch Colleran at Eventbrite asking us if we were developing a name badge tool, he saw our requests to the dev mode version of their API, our app was named “Name Badges”. He was really excited about it
. because name badges was one of their users’ biggest pain. He told us that at launch he would promote us through Eventbrite’s newsletter, Twitter account and blog.It took 2 weeks to get our first order, 4 weeks to reach 1k$ monthly revenue. At this point we applied to Y Combinator, got invited to the interview. And
. got totally destroyed. At the interview they cleverly brought the person responsible for printing name badges at YC events, and they asked us to convince her to use our product
. easy, right? Well she started by saying she uses mail merge to print the name badges. The problem is that we had absolutely no idea what mail merge was. From that moment the interview went downhill. We were not selected. After a few more months I asked my partners if they wanted to go full time with me? They all said yes! But we would not only work on Conference Badge. We would also try to experiment with other ideas and projects.Remember above when I said one lesson I learned with Jeuxgratuits.net was that you don’t need to change a winning recipe. That was our mantra with ConferenceBadge. We would give stellar customer support and fix the problems as they show up
but we wouldn’t try to expand in other verticals of the event business. It was just a damn great tool to create name badges. At some point Etienne (one of my partners) came with the idea of a tool to help us draft emails has a team like a Google doc. We were all excited by the idea. The more we built it, the more we used it, the more we realized first-hand the incredible impact a tool like Missive could have on our business. At that point, there was no coming back, Missive was our main mission.Fast forward 3 years
. we now have good growth for Conference Badge, and Missive's customer base is growing at 25% month over month. It took a really long time get to a point where Missive was competitive
but now after 3 years of labor
we are receiving amazing reviews and are really confident of the product future.Don't hesitate to follow me on twitter if you found the above interesting. Make sure to give Missive a try... it's the best email/chat client you can use to manage your business! And if you ever need name badges, you know where to get them! ✌I will hang around if you have questions for me.

Equifax or Equiphish?
More than a week after it said most people would be eligible to enroll in a free year of its TrustedID identity theft monitoring service, big three consumer credit bureau Equifax has begun sending out email notifications to people who were able to take the company up on its offer. But in yet another security stumble, the company appears to be training recipients to fall for phishing scams.
Some people who signed up for the service after Equifax announced Sept. 7 that it had lost control over Social Security numbers, dates of birth and other sensitive data on 143 million Americans are still waiting for the promised notice from Equifax. But as I recently noted on Twitter, other folks have received emails from Equifax over the past few days, and the messages do not exactly come across as having emanated from a company that cares much about trying to regain the public’s trust.
Here’s a redacted example of an email Equifax sent out to one recipient recently:
As we can see, the email purports to have been sent from trustedid.com, a domain that Equifax has owned for almost four years. However, Equifax apparently decided it was time for a new — and perhaps snazzier — name: trustedidpremier.com.
The above-pictured message says it was sent from one domain, and then asks the recipient to respond by clicking on a link to a completely different (but confusingly similar) domain.
My guess is the reason Equifax registered trustedidpremier.com was to help people concerned about the breach to see whether they were one of the 143 million people affected (for more on how that worked out for them, see Equifax Breach Response Turns Dumpster Fire). I’d further surmise that Equifax was expecting (and received) so much interest in the service as a result of the breach that all the traffic from the wannabe customers might swamp the trustedid.com site and ruin things for the people who were already signed up for the service before Equifax announced the breach on Sept. 7.
The problem with this dual-domain approach is that the domain trustedidpremier.com is only a few weeks old, so it had very little time to establish itself as a legitimate domain. As a result, in the first few hours after Equifax disclosed the breach the domain was actually flagged as a phishing site by multiple browsers because it was brand new and looked about as professionally designed as a phishing site.
What’s more, there is nothing tying the domain registration records for trustedidpremier.com to Equifax: The domain is registered to a WHOIS privacy service, which masks information about who really owns the domain (again, not exactly something you might expect from an identity monitoring site). Anyone looking for assurances that the site perhaps was hosted on Internet address space controlled by and assigned to Equifax would also be disappointed: The site is hosted at Amazon.
While there’s nothing wrong with that exactly, one might reasonably ask: Why didn’t Equifax just send the email from Equifax.com and host the ID theft monitoring service there as well? Wouldn’t that have considerably lessened any suspicion that this missive might be a phishing attempt?
Perhaps, but you see while TrustedID is technically owned by Equifax Inc., its services are separate from Equifax and its terms of service are different from those provided by Equifax (almost certainly to separate Equifax from any consumer liability associated with its monitoring service).
THE BACKSTORY
What’s super-interesting about trustedid.com is that it didn’t always belong to Equifax. According to the site’s Wikipedia page, TrustedID Inc. was purchased by Equifax in 2013, but it was founded in 2004 as an identity protection company which offered a service that let consumers automatically “freeze” their credit file at the major bureaus. A freeze prevents Equifax and the other major credit bureaus from selling an individual’s credit data without first getting consumer consent.
By 2006, some 17 states offered consumers the ability to freeze their credit files, and the credit bureaus were starting to see the freeze as an existential threat to their businesses (in which they make slightly more than a dollar each time a potential creditor — or ID thief — asks to peek at your credit file).
Other identity monitoring firms — such as LifeLock — were by then offering services that automated the placement of identity fraud controls — such as the “fraud alert,” a free service that consumers can request to block creditors from viewing their credit files.
[Author’s note: Fraud alerts only last for 90 days, although you can renew them as often as you like. More importantly, while lenders and service providers are supposed to seek and obtain your approval before granting credit in your name if you have a fraud alert on your file, they are not legally required to do this — and very often don’t.]
Anyway, the era of identity monitoring services automating things like fraud alerts and freezes on behalf of consumers effectively died after a landmark lawsuit filed by big-three bureau Experian (which has its own storied history of data breaches). In 2008, Experian sued LifeLock, arguing its practice of automating fraud alerts violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
In 2009, a court found in favor of Experian, and that decision effectively killed such services — mainly because none of the banks wanted to distribute them and sell them as a service anymore.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO
These days, consumers in all states have a right to freeze their credit files, and I would strongly encourage all readers to do this. Yes, it can be a pain, and the bureaus certainly seem to be doing everything they can at the moment to make this process extremely difficult and frustrating for consumers. As detailed in the analysis section of last week’s story — Equifax Breach: Setting the Record Straight — many of the freeze sites are timing out, crashing or telling consumers just to mail in copies of identity documents and printed-out forms.
Other bureaus, like TransUnion and Experian, are trying mightily to steer consumers away from a freeze and toward their confusingly named “credit lock” services — which claim to be the same thing as freezes only better. The truth is these lock services do not prevent the bureaus from selling your credit reports to anyone who comes asking for them (including ID thieves); and consumers who opt for them over freezes must agree to receive a flood of marketing offers from a myriad of credit bureau industry partners.
While it won’t stop all forms of identity theft (such as tax refund fraud or education loan fraud), a freeze is the option that puts you the consumer in the strongest position to control who gets to monkey with your credit file. In contrast, while credit monitoring services might alert you when someone steals your identity, they’re not designed to prevent crooks from doing so.
That’s not to say credit monitoring services aren’t useful: They can be helpful in recovering from identity theft, which often involves a tedious, lengthy and expensive process for straightening out the phony activity with the bureaus.
The thing is, it’s almost impossible to sign up for credit monitoring services while a freeze is active on your credit file, so if you’re interested in signing up for them it’s best to do so before freezing your credit. But there’s no need to pay for these services: Hundreds of companies — many of which you have probably transacted with at some point in the last year — have disclosed data breaches and are offering free monitoring. California maintains one of the most comprehensive lists of companies that disclosed a breach, and most of those are offering free monitoring.
There’s a small catch with the freezes: Depending on the state in which you live, the bureaus may each be able to charge you for freezing your file (the fee ranges from $5 to $20); they may also be able to charge you for lifting or temporarily thawing your file in the event you need access to credit. Consumers Union has a decent rundown of the freeze fees by state.
In short, sign up for whatever free monitoring is available if that’s of interest, and then freeze your file at the four major bureaus. You can do this online, by phone, or through the mail. Given how unreliable the credit bureau Web sites have been for placing freezes these past few weeks, it may be easiest to do this over the phone. Here are the freeze Web sites and freeze phone numbers for each bureau (note the phone procedures can and likely will change as the bureaus get wise to more consumers learning how to quickly step through their automated voice response systems):
Equifax: 866-349-5191; choose option 3 for a “Security Freeze”
Experian: 888-397-3742; –Press 2 “To learn about fraud or ADD A SECURITY FREEZE” –Press 2 “for security freeze options” –Press 1 “to place a security freeze” –Press 2 “
for all others” –enter your info when prompted
Innovis: 800-540-2505; –Press 1 for English –Press 3 “to place or manage an active duty alert or a SECURITY FREEZE” –Press 2 “to place or manage a SECURITY FREEZE” –enter your info when prompted
Transunion: 888-909-8872, choose option 3
