Fandom Gripe #23: I know that fandom is in some deep denial about its treatment of female characters that are canonically involved with fan favorite m/m ships, but do y’all realize that when you disappear female characters from the narrative wholesale to push the idea that your canonically straight fav was “secretly gay all along!” you’re making several bad implications? That 1) bi men don’t exist, 2) bi men do exist, but those who have genuinely loved a woman before cannot genuinely love a man after that (therefore bi men don’t exist in practice), 3) women cannot inspire genuine love and devotion in men, therefore any relationship with a woman is “lesser” than the one they later have a man (see previous parenthesis), or 4) to acknowledge the existence of a lovable woman who isn’t a terrible person, where if a relationship previously existed, it did not end because of “incompatibility,” is enough to destabilize the present relationship between two queer men?

Because why is the tgcf fandom allergic to acknowledging that He Xuan had a whole ass fiancée that he loved? Why does no one ever seem to remember that the kidnappings and murders of He Xuan’s sister and fiancée were the final straws that sent him on his rampage, and he still keeps a shrine to them in the present-day of the story? Why is her entire existence and significance to He Xuan as a man, character, and to his character arc disappeared in favor of pushing Shi Qingxuan—the brother of the man responsible for his fiancée’s death—into that same role, as if to say that her impact on He Xuan is significant... just not when it's from her? Why does He Xuan’s life in fandom essentially begin not just after her death but because of it?

“Especially if the male character treated the female character like shit and wished death on her multiple times,” everyone cheers again.

“If the only way you can make your ship work is by completely desecrating one or both of the character’s personalities, maybe it’s not that good of a ship” everyone cheers and claps.

Nina and Toby are one of my fav ships rn so have a headcanon dump :3

Nina and Toby are both very energetic around each other. Nina is energetic in general, and Toby is too, but whenever they're together the energy just multiplies.

Their favorite places to go on dates are arcades, roller rinks, and carnivals, usually taking place at night. When they're tired or feeling more relaxed they'll go to a comfy small coffee shop on the edge of town and just talk :3

Nina is very touch starved and is constantly clinging to Toby's arm, wrapping her arm around his shoulder/waist, etc. whenever they're together. Toby isn't as touchy but thinks its cute !!

Toby likes to draw a lot, and he'll doodle Nina all the time. He would do this before they became killers too, doodling her on the edges of his schoolwork while sneaking glances at her every few minutes.

Nina gets Toby little gifts all the time. It's one of her love languages. She'll get him small trinkets and pretty objects that she thinks he'd like. She spoils him all the time- if Toby makes just one comment about something he wanted it'll be in his hands by the end of the week.

Toby's love language is more quality time. He will take Nina out to all her favorite places, and he plans the most amazing romantic dinners as well. Anything he can do to spend time with her and make her smile, he'll do it.

I think this line is the summary of El’s character arc: “You speak about monsters, superheroes. That’s the stuff of myth and fairytales. Reality, truth is rarely so simple. People are not so easily defined. Only by facing all of ourselves, the good and the bad can we become whole.” 

She had to become whole accepting that she isn’t a monster but neither a superhero. 

At the end of the season we have this powerful line:

“I came here to try to understand who I was. To see if I was the monster. And now I know the truth. It is not me. It is you. You are the monster.” 

Eleven embraces the truth that she isn’t a monster, but she hasn’t accepted that she isn’t a superhero either. She doesn’t have to be one to be worthy. She doesn’t have to save the world. Her character arc is halfway there, but it isn’t complete yet. 

And I noticed there were many parallels between her conversations with Dr. Brenner and Mike. To me, this is leading that she accepting she isn’t a superhero is related to Mike, because this boy sees her as one, and even if he said that he loves her for who she is, he only keeps talking about her powers. He refers to her as Superman, he talks with Dustin about how his girlfriend saved the world. He says “you are my superhero”. He also says that she was born special. Mike is ALWAYS talking about her powers. It seems like he is in love with the idealized version he created of her. 

So when Eleven embraces this other truth, there’s two options, she will leave Mike or Mike has to learn as well that she’s much more than just her powers and stop idealizing her.
