Author’s Notes: Sorry, I’ve been real busy, but here’s another installment of my series.

Luna strolled into Ina’s office at a quarter past seven. It’d been a long day for both of them. Ina had a full day of lectures and quizzes while Luna had midterms approaching. 

“Professor,” Luna said, putting down her bags.

“Good evening, Luna. How are you?”

The two made small talk while Ina pulled the stack of quizzes she needed graded. But as well as Ina could hide her emotions, Luna felt there was something off about Ina.

“Here’s the answer key,” Ina began. “It’s all multiple choice so it shouldn’t take too long.” 

Ina handed Luna a red pen. But Luna wasn’t paying attention to Ina. Instead, she scoured through the stack of papers, pulling one out and comparing the answers.

“Whose is that?” Ina peered over Luna’s shoulder. “Oh, that’s right. You took this quiz today.”

Luna hummed in reply. “Aww man. I got one wrong.”

This time, it was Ina’s turn to tease Luna. “Nerd,” she scoffed.

“Shut up.”

The two worked in silence, except for Ina going ham on her keyboard. That research paper wasn’t going to write itself.

“Why are you typing so vigorously?” Luna commented absent-mindedly.

“Hmm...I don’t know, maybe because this paper’s due at midnight,” Ina said quite uncharacteristically. Ina, the polite and beloved anthropology professor, was not one to be so brash.

Rude! For no reason! Luna thought. While Luna was pondering the true reason for Ina’s disrespect, Ina stood up and began pacing back and forth. Finally, she stopped, slumping onto the couch that sat at the corner of the room.

“Ina?” Luna questioned, getting off of her chair. Like usual, her initial intuition was spot-on, something was, in fact, off. 

Ina laid on the couch, her head resting on the couch’s arm. When Luna finally approached it, she took a look at Ina. Her face was slightly glossy, tear-stained.

“Scoot over,” Luna said firmly.

Ina huffed a little, but she moved further into the couch. Luna faced Ina, acting as a handkerchief, wiping away Ina’s tears.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” Luna finally broke the silence.

“No.” 

“Okay. We can just lie here together. It’s okay.” Luna wrapped her arms around Ina. Ina subsequently buried her face in her shoulder, her tears falling slowly, wetting Luna’s shirt.

The two stayed like this for a few more moments, until Ina sat up, wiping the lasts of her tears. “I apologize, Luna. I owe you an explanation.”

“You don’t need to-”

“Please, I want to. I feel like you should know.”

“Only if you’re sure.”

“I am.” Ina had gained her confidence back. “I know we haven’t known each other for long, but I trust you. Maybe it’s naive or too early, but well...I feel like I could tell you anything, and you wouldn’t judge me. So here goes.” 

And boy, did Ina open up. It was unlike anything Luna had ever witnessed from the mysterious professor. But she wasn’t complaining. This was arguably what she loved most about Ina. 

“It was my freshman year of high school and I was sitting in my US history class. I was such a little nerd,” Ina recalled fondly. “Anyway, this girl walked into my class and god, I was smitten. What she made me feel...I’d never felt before. I mean, I hadn’t been with any guy, but this was different. Sure I’d thought some guys were attractive, but every time I looked at her, I got butterflies.”

“Aww! I’m imagining a little nerdy Ina staring at a pretty high schooler now.”

“Mhm. Well, we got assigned each other for a project. And we hit it off. She was brilliant, passionate, caring...I really liked her, but I thought it was just as friends. One afternoon, we went to the library together to prepare for the presentation of the project. She asked me if I liked girls, and I hadn’t really considered it. Some sort of internalized homophobia, I guess. I went home that day just deep in thought. But God, she made me feel so alive. It was something I’d never experienced before. And then I just started thinking of kissing her and I never wanted to stop. I think I knew then and there that I liked women.”

“Well? What happened after?” Luna asked, invested in Ina’s anecdote.

“A few days later, some teacher was berating her for not knowing an answer to something rather trivial and I found myself defending her. I guess my protective side came out.”

“Not the only thing that came out then...” Luna smirked.

Ina scoffed but had a huge grin on her face. But just as quickly as it appeared, her smile faded.

“When we left school that day, she uh thanked me with a kiss. And that’s how I knew for sure that I liked her. A lot. I asked her out a few weeks later and we were together for a little over a year. At the time, she meant the world to me. We’d do everything together and she was my first for a lot of things, my first kiss, my first love...”

“A year? That is...surprisingly long for a relationship at that time. Why’d it end?”

“Her parents were incredibly supportive. They knew about us since the beginning of the relationship. Mine...did not know. I had told Lilian, and she listened and supported me a lot. We were always pretty close. Well, after a year together, Emma asked to meet my conservative parents. I was both giddy and nervous, but I thought I was ready. I truly thought love was unconditional. Maybe I was naive to think acceptance was guaranteed. And well, I told my parents that I had someone special for them to meet. In retrospect, I should’ve told them more details. Maybe they were expecting a dashing young man that could escort me to Prom in the following year or whatnot. And well, Emma came over for dinner and I told my parents about us. They...were shocked. Their perfect little nerdy daughter was gay. They didn’t handle themselves well that night. They said some unforgivable things to Emma. We tried to work through it, but we were young and broke up a few weeks after that.”

“Ina, I’m so sorry.”

 “I...it’s okay. It’s been a while now. They didn’t throw me out of the house, but they didn’t talk about my sexuality at all. Emma was always my ‘friend.’ No one in the extended family knew. It was like they were ashamed of me. Lilian was the wild child and I was the apple of my parents’ eyes, but they never looked at me the same after that dinner. It was a tough time. Lilian and my friends at school supported me. If it weren’t for them...I don’t know where I’d be now.”

Luna caressed Ina’s check, wiping away the flowing tears.

“I just existed in their house for a while. I had a brief period of dating guys who were’t too good for me, probably out of my parents lack of support. Trying to be straight. But there was never any feelings between the two of us. They just...weren’t Emma. The last guy I dated was sweet, but I felt nothing for him romantically. And then Lilian was pregnant. And that was the last straw for my parents. They kicked out Lilian and I left with her. After all those years of her supporting me, I needed to support her. They said some inexcusable things to her and I’m glad we left. But it was incredibly difficult. Lilian and I struggled a lot. We had to work odd jobs just to pay rent whilst still going to school. Today’s the anniversary of them kicking us out. Today I have to be strong for Lilian’s sake, but I lost my parents that day too. I guess it all just hit me now.”

“You don’t need to apologize. Come here.”

Luna wrapped Ina in her arms once more. Then, she held Ina’s face, staring intensely into her eyes.

“You are the strongest woman I know. Strongest person I know. But it’s okay to not be strong too. You don’t need to pretend to be strong 24/7. Strength and weakness...that’s what makes us human.”

Ina smiled at Luna, tears falling freely. For a moment, they just stared at each other. Ina then leaned in, closing the gap between them. She captured Luna’s lips slowly, but as the kiss prolonged, the passion increased. When they finally pulled away, both women were out of breath.

Ina cleared her throat, standing up and beckoning Luna to get on her feet.

“Dance with me.”

Luna took a second to play a song on her phone, but she then gratefully accepted, leaning into Ina’s arms as they moved slowly.

Ina smiled again at Luna, a hand rising from Luna’s waist to cup her cheek.

“I hope your coming out story is better than mine,” she jested.

“Well, yeah I guess. When my family moved to the States from Venezuela, my mom always emphasized the importance of getting a good education, being prudent, all of that. I was very involved in high school, and I was a part of a lot of science extracurriculars. My freshman year of high school, my mom forced me to join mock trial to improve my public speaking. I thought it was useless since I knew I wanted to do neuroscience. She drove me to every practice, every conference...I fell in love with it. The more I did research for trials, the more passionate I became about public policy, law, and civil rights. And of course, gay rights. I guess that’s how I knew. Mind you, I was one of those kids who cuffed their jeans and got called out for not sitting in chairs properly.”

“It makes so much sense now. And you are...extremely well-spoken. Anyway, how’d you tell your parents?”

“We were at a mock trial competition. I had just used Obergefell v. Hodges as legal precedent to win the trial. My parents picked me up and I told them all about the case. My dad kinda stopped me mid-sentence and asked me if I had anything to tell them.”

“And?”

“I told them, but they said they already knew. They didn’t care who I’d be with, as long as they’re someone decent, kind, protective...the whole nine yards. The only problem is that they’re just very nosy about my love life. If I texted someone and smiled they’d look to see who it is. They also acted as if each person I’d bring home to meet them was the love of my life.”

Unreasonable jealousy flashed through Ina’s eyes, but her voice remained steady. “Did you bring a lot of people home to meet your parents?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Luna smiled smugly.

Follow the Beacon Ozpin—Truth

Ozpin watched on the monitor as Ms. Rose and Mr. Branwen stepped from the elevator into the waiting room on the floor below. Both of them looked ill—he was probably still recovering from the day before, and she was afraid of this meeting going badly.

Maybe we should have spoken to the twins sooner. Qrow sagged in his chair, face buried in his hands, pale and withdrawn. It looked like he'd slept in his clothes. If they were sent here as spies, it was clearly under duress.

We still don't know what his Semblance is, he countered. If it's anything like his sister's, the two of them could vanish at any moment. We'll have to be very, very careful.

Speaking of which— Ozpin sealed the balcony door with a thought and a wave of his hand. ... just in case.

Just in case, he agreed with a twinge of pain in his chest. The intercom clicked as he switched it on. "Thank you both for coming. May I speak to Mister Taupe first?"

Qrow didn't respond, but shuffled to his feet as the secure elevator slid open. Summer watched his back as he entered, arms folded tightly around her stomach, and only looking away when he turned to face the doors. He was preoccupied, however, staring at the controls.

It wasn't uncommon for the Vault button to catch a student's eye—there were only three, and it was mysteriously unmarked. Though, it was rare for anyone to reach out and deliberately press it. Nothing happened, of course, it only worked with the correct password entered into the emergency phone.

Was he told to do that?

He may just be looking for a way out…

He stepped carefully from the elevator, eyes darting around the room before returning to a spot somewhere over Ozpin's shoulder. Finding no one else there seemed to calm him slightly.

"Yes, quite the view, isn't it?" Ozpin stared out the window for a moment, allowing a longer search while his back was turned. "You'll notice I have my desk turned away from the window. Hot cocoa?"

"Uh…thanks," Qrow said, accepting the mug.

"There's no need to be nervous." Ozpin smiled. "I was looking over your course records earlier. I must say—for someone of your background, your marks have been exemplary. Your parents must be very proud."

"No parents, sir."

It was incredibly rare for bandits to claim their children. The misdirect did its job, and Qrow relaxed a tiny bit more. "Ah. My apologies. Have you enjoyed it here in Vale so far?"

"It's…" he glanced to the left, down at the hazy skyscrapers. "Different."

Ozpin chuckled. "Yes, I'd imagine it can be a bit much after growing up in pastoral Anima. I was born in the city, myself," he said wistfully, "though it didn't take me long to leave it." He leaned back in his chair, settled in, unthreatening. "Tell me, what made you want to become a Huntsman?"

Qrow buried his face in the mug, taking a long sip. "I…liked the comics," he stammered, turning ever so slightly pink. That was difficult to fake. "As a kid. What can I say, they made an impression on a dumb farmhand from Anima."

"That is why the kingdoms keep printing them. Though, it doesn't explain your current dedication."

He scowled into the cocoa, hands tightening on the mug. "...I wanted to do some good in the world."

"An admirable goal." Ozpin took a sip from his own cup. "And I must say, I've been impressed with your efforts with that scythe of yours. You seem to be making great strides despite your lack of a proper teacher."

"Professor Carmine's been a lot of help," Qrow said quickly. "Professor Mesánychta, too."

"And all of it on top of your normal coursework, and your practice with the broadsword form of your weapon. Even without taking your lack of prior education into account, you are one of the top students in your class." He leaned back, opening a drawer in his desk. "Which is why I was so surprised to hear that you had brought alcohol onto the school grounds."

Qrow sagged with relief as he set the flask on the desk.

"I'm aware the legal drinking age in Mistral is eighteen. And outside the kingdoms…well. But you understand, while you are in Vale you must abide by the kingdom's laws."

He tensed, eyes widening, with a half-glance at the elevator doors. "Summer didn't have anything to do with it. It-it's mine, I smuggled it from home, she didn't—"

"Please, Mister Taupe, it is all right," Ozpin said, holding up a hand. "Seeing as this is your first offence—and Miss Rose made me swear that you wouldn't get in any trouble—I see no reason to involve the police."

"...Summer… told you?" He sounded confused, but not hurt. A good sign.

"She confessed to me that she was concerned. That you've been isolating yourself, losing interest in your work. Have you been drinking more as well?"

He swallowed, averting his gaze. "Maybe…maybe a little."

"Please don't be angry with Miss Rose. She agonized over the decision to come to me for help, I assure you. But Beacon has a number of health services available to students if you are feeling stressed." He got to his feet, circling the desk to offer his hand. "My door is always open, as well."

Hesitantly, Qrow accepted it. "Um… thanks… I-I'm fine, really."

"Mister Tau—" Ozpin stopped himself. The boy needed to hear his own name. "Qrow. Please. I can help you."

A shadow fell over his face, and he remained silent.

"No matter what it is," he pressed, squeezing his hand lightly. It was shaking.

"...I'm fine."

Magic welled in his fingertips, ready to channel if Qrow ran or tried to open a portal.

Don't hurt him.

Of course not. But we can't allow a possible lead to slip away, and he needs help. Gently, they ran their thumb over Qrow's palm. "You have remarkably smooth hands for a farmer."

He jerked his arm back, shaking even harder than before. "I… I was kinda lazy." After a moment of hesitation he shoved his hands into his pockets.

"Mister Taupe, this is exactly the kind of behavior that has your team leader so worried."

Qrow sagged, his hands slipping down to hang limp at his sides, head bowed so low Ozpin couldn't see his face. "...Stop it."

"I beg your pardon?"

"Stop pretending."

Carefully, gently, Ozpin took his hand again. "Mister Branwen, why did you come to Beacon?"

He flinched at the sound of his name, and voice cracking as he answered. "I wanted to be a Huntsman."

It was not the answer they expected, but certainly a welcome surprise. "What is holding you back?"

"I— I— I couldn't—" He wiped at his face angrily, trying to hide the tears, and Ozpin quickly passed over his handkerchief. "I didn't want to keep hurting people and they all hated me but if I ran they'd beat me to death— R-Raven's Semblance— T-there— I— she—"

"Shh," he soothed, rubbing Qrow's back but staying an arm's length away, giving him space to escape. He still flinched. "Deep breaths."

He half-turned, trying to hide his face, wiping his eyes again. "I couldn't run away because Raven c-could bring them right to me."

"Do you really think she would have helped them find you?"

"I-if she didn't then they would have just killed her first."

"So you convinced her to run with you."

"Our—our l-leader just died and everyone was scared. He was the one who… who protected us."

Ah. Yes. Bones Branwen's death had been toasted at more than one gathering of Huntsmen in the past year, and that was only in Vale.

"I convinced Raven and V—the new leader we should sneak into an Academy so we could take his place and protect the tribe," he said dully. "I thought if we had four years away from home then maybe I could convince her to… that we didn't…" his voice petered off, and when he spoke again it was nearly too soft to hear. "It doesn't matter."

"Let me help with your sister," Ozpin said, and Qrow slowly raised his head to stare, open-mouthed. "I'm sure a little extra responsibility around the school and a few careful nudges in the right direction couldn't hurt, but it's important that you know this kind of healing takes time. It will—"

"You're not…throwing us out?" his voice rang with disbelieving hope.

"Good heavens, no. Banditry would be a terrible waste of your talents." Ozpin chuckled as if the idea were absurd and squeezed his hand again. "Why don't you get some rest. Tomorrow is Saturday—come back in the morning and we can discuss your sister with clearer heads. And I hope you will allow me to refer you to one of the campus counselors."

Qrow nodded absently, staring at one of the desk legs.

"Then I'll see you at ten o' clock." Ozpin smiled. "It's all right if you're a little late. Eat something and get some rest."

He hesitated. "...Are you going to tell Summer and Tai?"

Ah. That was a tricky question. Now that the air had been cleared—with one twin, at least—Ozpin wasn't sure if Claret would continue allowing Summer to remain ignorant of her teammates' past.

"Not at present," he said. "And I would certainly consult you before doing so. ...But I believe you should tell them, before too long."

Qrow's eyes widened in something approaching horror. "What?"

"The truth has a way of coming out eventually. And it would be better to hear it from you."

"...I don't…" he wiped at his face again. "...They'll hate me."

"I very much doubt it," Ozpin replied. They had left Anima at a young age and were unlikely to have inherited their parents' prejudices. "Though it will probably be something of a shock, and they may not understand immediately."

Qrow didn't seem very reassured by that answer. Slowly, his eyes wandered toward the flask still sitting in the center of the desk. "…I know you have to pour out the moonshine, but…can I have my flask back?"

Brothers above.

"I'll give it back as a twenty-first birthday present," he said firmly.

Should we?

They knew all too well where that road could lead, and bandits did not have good habits to begin with. "Though... Mister Branwen, I do wish to warn you…Hunting and drinking do not tend to mix well."

"Uh…Thank you, Professor Ozpin."

He squeezed Qrow's hand once more before letting go. "I'll see you tomorrow."

Qrow slumped against the elevator wall as soon as the doors were shut, almost ducking out of the camera's view. Well, it's reasonable to assume that she didn't send them.

Yes, he agreed, only slightly disappointed that this hadn't turned out to be a lead. Much better for the twins that she wasn't involved. Though I'm not sure that will entirely soothe anyone's fears.

"Qrow!" Summer squeaked, leaping to her feet as the doors slid open and hastily drying her eyes on her cape. He stepped out, back into the next camera's view, still slouching and withdrawn in posture. "Qrow, I'm so sorry, I— I didn't know what to do, I—"

"Thank you, Summer." The camera barely picked up his words.

She sobbed and yanked him into a hug. After a moment he reciprocated, leaning his cheek on the top of her head.

Despite their earlier concerns, it seemed nudging team STRQ together had been the right call. Ozpin shuddered to think what might have happened if Mister Branwen had a team leader less capable than the one Miss Rose was growing into.

I've already said Masaru's the muse that is least like me (and Bleach's Ichigo is so much like me, in my project I may end up just giving him my career)

But I do get enough to want to play him.

Of course, uh, well, anyone who knows me can tell you all about my difficulty with modern technology. Although I'm really handy with analogue tech, to the point I still mostly use it and can do basic repair on most of it (though, like me, it's all ageing and showing problems it didn't used to, at which point, I seem to become Tim Taylor...)

One of the things I do get is the basic feeling of anger. Mine is related to racism and queerphobia to the point of being an abuse survivor because of it. This is why my triggers are rage triggers, and they're things like "dressing up my human default English in exotic Japanese" and other "racism against certain groups is empowering uwu" kinda stuff.

Masaru's is maybe not as easy to point out, although his seems to be directed towards things that either endanger loved ones (Masaru v. Piyomon), hurt feelings into anger (Masaru v. Touma the second time, after he gave Touma his trust) or things that just violate his ethics code/are cruel (Kurata)

Also, feeling looked down on (Touma at first, ostensibly the motivation for the people he regularly fights with, who mostly look older than him), but I think that's probably most people.

And of course, violence is the first resort and something he regards as a moral imperative rather than something he does only if he must (conversely, Ichigo seems to fight regretfully when feeling forced into it, and Ken, well, the moment he realised he was being violent to living beings, that was horrifying enough to break him of control, and probably scar him for life. Will be upset if he's totally well-adjusted in Kizuna)

But I still get the anger, even if mine's through 23 years of acquiring CPTSD (and my understanding of trauma is why I said the last thing in brackets) and his is more just kinda how he's wired.

Will it ever calm down? I kinda picture there having to be an event to really bring home that he's gotta stop defaulting to violence. The anger, you know, that might even end up getting worse.

I used to solve the problems I could with fighting because I just didn't see another way. In high school, once the Japanese side of my family was all deceased, and it was the racist side and a bunch of racist Southerners, I quickly realised I had no school staff or any authority figures on my side, and all I was left with was my fists.

But when I turned legal age, I didn't wanna end up in prison, and I already knew the law only accepts self-defence if you're white. And you have to be monoracial white to be white. Those both being obvious, I became afraid to fight for myself.

I have even in recent years, rushed headlong into fights to protect others, but I'm trying to get the victim to safety, not take on the attacker. Honestly, joint degradation at this point means the latter wouldn't work, anyway.

One thing I can so easily see Masaru sharing with me is, even after all these years, I never figured out how to protect myself without violence.

I recently got pepper spray. Literally three days ago. I'll see what happens. The problem is I've been taught so hard to fear consequences of protecting myself.

But Masaru would still have two things I do, even if for different reasons.

1. He would not know how to effectively stand up for himself or his loved ones in the absence of violence being a viable route. Being ineffective would further fuel anger.

2. I think he'd be prone to worse buildup of anger once he can't let any of it out in violence. As he ages, things like insomnia, stress-related vomiting, and high blood pressure might be very real problems for him.

When you use your fists to solve problems, but you aren't an abusive person, you eventually submit to that not being a reasonable answer, and you end up with a "what now?"

And even a couple of decades after losing the option of violence, I still don't have an answer. People say "don't let it get to you" or "let it roll of your back," and that doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not that type of person. I'm not capable of that. And I don't think Masaru is, either.

Breathing excersises, walking meditation (you focus on chanting, not emptying your mind), knowing the one kind of person who actually is beneath me (I see all people as just that, people) is a bully, I dunno. I just think it's very hard for someone who once relied on violence to find something else that works. Bottling it all up keeps you from dealing with cops, which dealing with cops is never a good idea in America, but actually getting rid of the anger, if I haven't found that by 2020, someone so much younger than me is unlikely to have.

Sure, he has living family and people that are good fighters themselves, and let's be real, Touma deals with bigoted family hating his guts. He also duelled Masaru early on. He gets the satisfaction of violence.

So he has more possibility to be taught various ways to maybe somewhat mitigate the stress at one point, but his gut reaction will probably always be rage, and frankly, probably Touma is the only one who has a chance of knowing a way to help diffuse the rage after it's there.

That being said, Touma has other failsafes. He does look down on other people. He's got access to an ivory tower of loftiness, if you will. He's the one most likely to understand how Masaru feels, but he has his own background and viewpoint that Masaru doesn't have an equivalent. And let's be honest, Sayuri, and what we know of him, Suguru, don't really have that anger.

A lot of people I work with don't have that anger, either. They can let people calling them monkeys or "joking" about the Holocaust or calling ICE on them roll of their back. And they tell me to, and I just can't. So I don't feel like Sayuri or Suguru have the rage necessary to help Masaru cope once violence is no longer a viable route. I've come to realise that feeling rage is a fundamental type of person, just as Sayuri's apparent lack of an anger drive.

I think Touma comes closest to it. But I think he'd have to have a better answer than "know you're better than them." Masaru doesn't have that kind of high horse. In fact, he seems to at first, readily agree with and be angered by Touma being of upper class and accomplishment as well as his arrogance.

But as much as there's just got to be a solution to deal with the rage, which Masaru has in spades, I am currently unable to even concieve it myself. So as Masaru gets older, yeah, I think he'd have not-insignificant health problems related to just all that anger sitting in him.

Notes: I just realized that there was a six year time jump in this story from when Violet left New York to when Simon tracks her down in San Diego. And there was a six year time jump on The Walking Dead. Did I predict the six year time jump? I think I did. /sarcasm. It had been a little over a month and a half since Violet had introduced Dodger to Simon. So far things were going great. Dodger was calling Simon ‘dad’ and he always gets very excited when he hears that his dad is coming over. Simon had been spending nearly every night at Violet’s house. One Saturday the three of them did go to a nearby park and Violet sat on a bench while Simon and Dodger played on the jungle gym and swing set. Violet had brought a book with her but she barely read it since she was so busy watching Simon and Dodger. Simon really was a good father. Not that Violet had any doubts the he wouldn’t be. She knew how badly he’d wanted this. Violet had even let Simon and Dodger go out alone. It was good that they did as Violet needed time to explain to her family what was going on. They knew that Dodger’s father was Simon, that was old news. But she had to explain that Simon had found her and showed up randomly and that he was getting to know his son. Her father wanted to confront Simon about how he’d treated Violet all those years ago but Violet was able to talk some sense into him.

Violet was currently sitting at her kitchen table across from Dodger while he was eating a snack. She was so happy that he was getting on with Simon. He really seemed to be opening up a lot more. Not that he was closed off before. But he just seemed so much happier than he already had been having Simon around. Violet smiled softly to herself and bit her bottom lip. “Hey, listen, munchkin. Uncle Chris is gonna come over and hang out with you tonight, ok?” Dodger nodded enthusiastically. “Ok! Is my dad coming over too?” “Not tonight, sweetheart. Your dad and I are going out because we have some things that we need to talk about.” “Grown up things?” Violet nodded. “Yes, sweetie, grown up things. So once your Uncle Chris gets here mommy is gonna get ready and then go meet your dad at his hotel. But if you’re good for Uncle Chris tonight then maybe your dad will come over for breakfast tomorrow. How does that sound?” Dodger grinned. “Awesome!” Violet laughed as Dodger slid off his chair and ran to his playroom.

A few minutes later Violet heard her front door open. “Vi?” It was her brother Chris. “I’m in the kitchen.” She replied. Chris walked into the kitchen and sat where Dodger had been sitting a few minutes earlier. “Hey, how are you?” Violet shrugged a bit. “I’m ok. Kinda nervous about tonight.” “Why?” He asked. “It’s been a long time since I’ve spent any time alone with Simon. Things have been going great with him and Dodger and I’m worried that we’ll get in a fight and it’ll mess things up.”  “Well you said he’s a good guy and good father. Even if you guys get in a fight I doubt he’d let it come between him and his son. And I know that you’re not a vindictive person. You’d never keep him from seeing Dodger.” Violet nodded. “I know. I just…it’s gonna be weird seeing him one on one again.” “You’ll be alright, kiddo. You’re a lot stronger than you give yourself credit for.” Chris said reassuringly. Violet smiled and nodded. “I know. I should go get ready. Dodger’s in his playroom.” Violet stood and headed upstairs, smiling to herself when she heard Dodger yell “Uncle Chris!”

Violet opened her closet door and stared at everything for a moment. Her and Simon were getting dinner and drinks, nothing fancy. She didn’t want to overdress or dress provocatively and send the wrong message. She decided on a long sleeved burgundy colored blouse that didn’t show too much cleavage, black jeans, and nude colored flats. She put on a pair of simple gold stud earrings and quickly put on mauve eyeshadow, mascara, and lipgloss. She looked herself over in the mirror as she pulled her wavy hair into a ponytail, biting her bottom lip. She decided that her look was toned down enough and grabbed a black clutch purse from her closet. She put her ID, credit card, cash, phone, and lip gloss inside before heading downstairs. She walked to the playroom and leaned against the doorway. “Hey, munchkin, I’m heading out now.” Dodger stood and ran over to Violet, wrapped his arms around her. “Bye, mommy. I love you.” Violet held him close and leaned down to kiss his forehead. “I love you too. I’ll see you in the morning, ok?” Dodger nodded as he hurried back to his pile of legos and matchbox cars. Chris waved at her. “Have fun. Do you know what time you’ll be home?” Violet shook her head. “I’ll text you and let you know.” She said before heading out.

Violet texted Simon that she was on her way to the hotel and drove towards the highway. She wasn’t too far from where Simon was staying but was far enough that she had time to think on the drive. What if this was a bad idea? In the days leading up to this, Violet could feel herself letting her guard down more and more around Simon. As much as she wanted them to have a normal relationship, it was hard for her. They’d meant so much to each other at one point. She still cared about Simon and she was pretty sure that Simon still cared about her. But their relationship had taken such an emotional toll on her that she hadn’t been able to have a real relationship since. She’d only been with one other person in the six years since she left New York. Sure she had hookups here and there. But it just wasn’t the same. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, Violet could see herself being with Simon again. She tried to shake that thought from her mind as she pulled up in front of Simon’s hotel. She texted him that she was there and moment later he came outside and lightly jogged to her car before climbing in and buckling up. He smiled that bright, warm smile of his. “Hey, how are you?” He asked. Violet smiled and nodded. “I’m good, how are you?” Simon nodded as well. “Not too bad.”

The exchanged small talk as Violet drove to the restaurant. They had decided on a simple Italian place not too far from the hotel. Violet pulled into the parking lot and found a fairly close spot. They climbed out of the car and made their way inside. The hostess seated them at a cozy booth near the back of the restaurant and handed them each a menu. While Violet was looking over the menu, she could feel Simon looking at her. She flicked her eyes upward and saw Simon staring at her over his menu. “What?” She asked softly. Simon smiled and shook his head. “Nothing, just…you look nice. It’s nice seeing you again.” “You’ve seen me pretty much everyday for the last six weeks.” “I know but not like this. All dressed up and what not.” Violet looked over herself. “I’m not that dressed up.” Simon shrugged. “You just look really nice.” Violet blushed a bit and smiled. “Thanks. You look nice too.” A few moments later their waitress came over and took their orders. She returned quickly with a glass of wine for Violet and a beer for Simon.

The conversation started off a little strained at first but they quickly fell into a comfortable rhythm. Simon told Violet about what was going on with his business. He’d added some pretty famous clients to his roster over the years. Violet felt proud hearing him talk about it. She knew how important the business was to him and how hard he worked to build it into what it had become. Simon also told Violet about his brother and sister-in-law having twins and his mother having surgery after taking a bad fall. Violet never got a chance to meet any of Simon’s family but he’d told her a lot about them so she felt like she knew them. He got visibly upset when he talked about his mom. Violet reached over and placed her hand comfortingly over Simon’s. He looked down at her hand before looking up at her. He turned his hand and wrapped his fingers around hers, giving her hand a slight squeeze. Violet blushed a bit and pulled her hand back. Simon smirked a bit and took a sip of his beer. “So, besides having a secret baby, what else have you been up to?” Simon asked Violet.

Violet laughed softly. “Well I’ve been working at a local newspaper for the last couple of years.” “Oh are you a reporter now?” Violet shook her head. “Oh god no. I’m an associate editor.” Simon quirked an eyebrow. “What does an associate editor do?” “I’m a jack of all trades really. I do research and fact checking for stories, I do first draft edits, sometimes come up with headlines. An editor position is opening up soon so I’m hoping to get a promotion.” Simon nodded. “That sounds cool. Do you like it?” Violet smiled a bit. “I do. I really enjoy doing all the research especially when it’s like a really deep investigative piece about a legal issue. I like going to court hearings and reading all the legal briefs.” “Really? That’s awesome. You sound really passionate about it. I’m glad you’re happy.” A moment later the waitress brought their food. They continued talking as they ate and soon enough it felt as if no time had passed at all. Once they were done eating Simon paid the bill against Violet’s wishes. She wanted to split the bill but he insisted on paying.

They left the restaurant and stepped outside. Violet looked up at Simon. “There’s an ice cream shop right down the block. Wanna get dessert?” Simon smiled and nodded. “Yeah that sounds good.” They walked down the block to the crowded ice cream parlor and got in line. Violet got a cone with double chocolate ice cream and Simon got a dish with vanilla topped with rainbow jimmies. They walked outside and sat on a bench so they could eat. The pair were talking about less serious things now like TV and movies. At one point Simon stared at Violet licking her ice cream and let his thoughts drift to a not so clean place. He quickly shook himself out of that thought and blushed a bit once he realized what he was doing. It did not go unnoticed by Violet but she decided it was best not to say anything. After they finished their treats they walked back to the car. Violet drove back to the hotel and pulled up out front a few moments later. Simon looked at the time. “It’s still kinda early. Did you wanna come in a get a drink at the bar?” Violet thought for a moment. She wondered if this would be a good idea. She wanted to keep talking to Simon, she was having a really nice time. But there was part of her that knew that if she went into that hotel with Simon then there was a chance that she’d wind up back in his room. “Fuck it.” Violet thought to herself. She smiled and nodded. “Yeah, ok, sure.”

Simon pointed to where Violet could go to get her car valet parked. She pulled up and the valet opened her door for her. She thanked him as he handed her a ticket for her car. She slipped the ticket into her jean pocket and followed Simon into the hotel and to the bar. They sat on stools at the counter and the bartender walked over to them. “Good evening, folks. What can I get for you?” Simon motioned for Violet to order first. “Umm, I’ll take an apple martini.” The bartender nodded and looked to Simon. “I’ll have Crown Royal, neat, please.” The bartender walked away to prepare their drinks. He set their glasses down in front of them a moment later. “Would you like to open up a tab?” He asked. Simon nodded. “Yes, under room 705, please.” “You got it, sir. Enjoy.” Simon and Violet picked up their glasses and held them up. “Let’s make a toast.” Simon said. Violet smiled. “Ok, to what?” She asked. “To us. To new beginnings, to being friends, to being parents.” Violet laughed softly and clinked her glass against Simon’s before taking a drink.

As the night progressed, Simon and Violet laughed and talked and drank and just enjoyed being around each other. Violet had worried that things would be awkward between them but was relieved that things seemed almost like normal. At one point an older woman, probably in her late 60s, walked up to them while they were mid conversation. “Excuse me, I’m sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I’ve been watching you two and I just had to say that you two remind me of myself and my husband.” Violet furrowed her eyebrows as the woman spoke. “What do you mean?” “My husband and I were very much in love. Even though we were married for almost fifty years it was as if we were still in the honeymoon phase. You two are obviously very in love. It’s very sweet and I wish you both all the happiness in the world.” Violet’s jaw was hanging open a bit as she watched the woman walk away. Once she was out of the bar she and Simon looked at each other for a moment before they started giggling. “That was very strange.” Violet said. Simon finished his whiskey and put his glass on the counter. “Was it?” He asked.

“Um, yeah, it was.” Violet responded. Simon licked his lips. “You think someone seeing the way we’ve been acting and thinking we’re together is weird?” “What do you mean ‘the way we’ve been acting?’” “I mean we’ve been talking and laughing and maybe flirting a little for the last couple of hours.” Violet set her glass down. “Umm, I have not been flirting.” Simon laughed a bit. “Ok, if you say so.” “I haven’t.” She insisted. “Maybe you don’t even realize you’ve been doing it. I mean I don’t blame you because I have been to and I certainly haven’t been rebuffing you. I’ve been enjoying it, if I’m being honest.” Violet finished her drink and reached into her purse to get cash so she could tip the bartender. “This was a bad idea.” She said as she started to get off the stool. Simon stopped her by placing a hand on her side before quickly leaning in to press a soft kiss to her lips. Violet was caught off guard and initially responded by returning the kiss. A flood of emotion overwhelmed Violet at first and the kiss was so familiar. After a few seconds she realized what was going on and quickly pulled away. She stared up at Simon for a moment before quickly sliding off her stool and heading out of the hotel.

Violet walked outside and handed her ticket to the valet. He picked up a walkie talkie and gave someone on the other end the number on her ticket. Violet just stood there and kept replaying what had just happened. She was feeling confused. She told herself over and over again that she didn’t want to get back into it with Simon. But she definitely felt something when he kissed her. Something she hadn’t felt in years. She started questioning herself. Why didn’t she want to get back into it with Simon? Yes, she’d been hurt before. But so many years had passed and Violet knew that Simon was sorry for what had happened between them. Was she punishing herself? Violet had felt so bad about not telling Simon about Dodger that part of her felt like she didn’t deserve love or happiness. A voice in Violet’s head kept yelling at her, “What are you doing? Go get him!” Violet turned to the valet and smiled. “I’m so sorry but can you cancel? I’ve had a little too much to drink and I’m realizing that I probably shouldn’t drive right now.” The valet nodded and handed her back her ticket. “Of course, ma’am. Would you like me to call you a cab?” Violet shook her head. “No thank you. I’m just gonna go back inside.” But Violet wasn’t drunk. She’d never felt more sober in her life. She walked back inside the hotel and headed to the bar. Simon was gone. “Shit.” She was going to text him but then remembered he gave the bartender his room number to set up the tab. “705.” She mumbled to herself before heading to the elevators. She quickly texted her brother to let him know she was getting a room at the hotel because she drank too much and to see if he could spend the night with Dodger at her place. He quickly responded that he could and told her to be safe and feel better.

Violet got on an elevator and hit the button to head to the seventh floor. She started to feel nervous as the elevator approached the correct floor. Once the doors opened she stepped off and followed the sign on the wall to the end of the hall where room 705 was. Violet stood there and just stared at the door for a moment. What was she doing? She immediately turned and started back towards the elevator before stopping. No. She’d come up here for a reason. Even though it felt scary to open herself up again, she knew this was the right thing for her right now. She turned back and walked up Simon’s room, knocking on the door and stepping back a bit. A moment later Simon opened the door and furrowed his eyebrows. “Hey, is everythi-“ Violet cut him off by grabbing his shirt collar and pulling him down into a passionate kiss. Simon immediately wrapped his arms around Violet’s waist and pulled her close. She walked Simon back into his room and kicked the door closed behind her. After a minute Simon pulled back. “Wait, what’s happening?” He asked breathlessly. “I’ve decided to stop punishing myself and let myself be happy again.” “What about before? Downstairs?” Violet shrugged. “You made the first move. It caught me off guard, that’s all.” Simon brought a hand up to cup Violet’s cheek. She could feel herself tear up a little. It’d been so long since he touched her like that. She leaned into the touch. “Are you sure about this?” He asked. Violet smiled and nodded. “I’m positive.” She said before leaning up to kiss Simon sweetly.

As they continued kissing, Violet started to unbutton Simon’s shirt. She ran her hands down his chest and sighed softly when her fingers ran over his still chiseled abs. Simon quickly slipped his shirt off before wrapping his arms around Violet and holding her tightly. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she stood on the tips of her toes to kiss him. After a moment Simon pulled back and pulled Violet’s blouse over her head. She suddenly felt very self conscious and covered her belly with her arms. Simon looked down at her. “Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked. She shook her head. “You’re still in such good shape and I’m so not. This was a horrible idea.” Violet reached for her shirt. Simon sat on the edge of the bed and pulled Violet into his lap. “Hey, listen to me.” He turned her face towards him and pecked her lips a few times. “I told you before that you are the most beautiful woman in the world. I meant it then and I still mean it now. And your body…” He said with a smile as he ran his fingers over her belly. “You carried a child. Our child. Your body is amazing.” Violet’s lips slowly curled into a smile. “You’re still so cheesy.” Simon laughed softly and shrugged. “Some things never change.” Violet adjusted herself so she was straddling Simon’s waist and wrapped her arms around his neck as she kissed him deeply.

As Simon ran his hands over Violet’s exposed skin, she reached down and unbuttoned Simon’s jeans. It was something she’d done dozens of times. It felt so familiar and brought a little smile to her face. Once she had his jeans unbuttoned and unzipped Simon stood and gently placed Violet down on the bed. He kicked off his shoes and socks before pushing his jeans down. Seeing Simon like this again was unreal. He still looked so good. She couldn’t quite figure out why before but now she knew. It’s because none of them were him. No matter how much she may not have wanted to admit it, Simon was her one true soulmate. Now that he was here she couldn’t let him go again. Almost as if he read her mind, Simon kissed Violet’s forehead and smiled. “You know that I’m yours, right? You have me forever.” Violet smiled and nodded. “I know.” As they cuddled and slowly drifted off to sleep, Violet had one last thought. She wasn’t entirely sure how all of this was going to work out, but she did know that this time she wasn’t going to give up without a fight.

          his life flipped on its head when jonghyun went to tour what could someday be the college he’d attend. call it wishful thinking, but jonghyun hoped to attend seoul national university -- it’d help with his lack of experience and he’d be able to make a better life for himself & for his parents, but when he went out to explore around seoul with the group of friends he’d made, jonghyun was approached by someone claiming to be a model scout. jonghyun was attractive, sure, but he didn’t ever think he was modeling attractive. so, he talks to his parents about it & after he does some digging ( and finding out that the scout was real ), he decided that he’d give it a try and defer college by one year. if it didn’t take off, he’d go to college & forget about modelling.

          after going through the motions & getting a portfolio together, jonghyun was soon going on go-sees & it didn’t take long for him to start booking shows and photo shoots. of course, he started with fashion houses in seoul & after making quite an impression in his home country ( even getting a deal with samsung ), jonghyun’s portfolio was growing more & more. when the year passed & he found himself making good money & the way that his parents were proud of him, jonghyun decided to pursue modeling full time. soon, he found himself leaving korea behind & settled in new york for the time being at the age of 19 to get bigger & better jobs. jonghyun spent about four years ( from 19 to 23 ) living in new york & during this time he became the face of a lot of companies ranging from, but not limited to: saint laurent, gucci, dior homme, louis vuitton & alexander wang. 

          he was also getting commercials & various endorsements. during this time, he was also participating in fashion week & was one of the few male models that actually had a walk & didn’t look like he was just clunking down the runway. on top of that, we’re all pretty aware of how fashion lacked diversity a few short years ago, so jonghyun was one of the models during the time where diversity started becoming more prominent ( even though there’s still a long way to go ). since he was still something of a ‘fresh face’, jonghyun getting these deals was wild & was soon on covers for gq, w, v, i-d, dazed, l’officiel hommes & he’s one of the few men featured on the cover of american vogue.

          during this time, though, while he was on top of the world with his career, jonghyun met & married the worst man to ever exist. jonghyun met his husband at a fashion event & he belonged to a prominent family ( hm, let’s say like the duponts or the rockefellers ). his husband sucks, so we’ll give him a shitty name: allen. allen & jonghyun had something of a whirlwind relationship, secretly getting married after only eight months of dating. jonghyun was roughly 24 at the time & was still pretty wide-eyed to everything that was happening around him. he was still booking shows, photo shoots & everything in between; he had even started becoming a prominent figure on the front row.

          now, here’s why his relationship was so bad: allen was not a good man in general. on the outside, he was suave & charismatic, when in reality he was mean & knew how to hide it in public. jonghyun’s attractive, there’s no doubt about it, so whenever they went to events & jonghyun was socializing, allen would get huffy puffy because he’s thinking that jonghyun is flirting with them ( jonghyun is flirtatious as hell so that doesn’t really help ). jonghyun would always brush allen off whenever he’d get huffy puffy because honestly, he was working, but allen liked to blow things out of proportion. it’s safe to say, in light terms, that jonghyun would get an ear full during their drive home, once they were home & sometimes even the next morning.

          allen, while accusing jonghyun of being with other people, was actually with other people. jonghyun’s slight naivety when it came to relationships ( considering that allen was his first ‘real’ relationship ), caused him to sometimes turn a blind eye to allen’s cheating & overall mistreatment. i don’t wanna say he was passive, but he had passive tendencies, which allowed allen to continue his mistreatment because when he’d be upset it wouldn’t last long because allen would kiss him just right & he wouldn’t be mad anymore. 

          anyways, fast forward a year into the marriage & things get worse when allen’s sexual desire towards jonghyun fades into nothing. the marriage is all for show at this point ( so any public displays of affection was fake as hell ) & allen is still going for his jabs at jonghyun whenever they’re out. everything comes to a head one night when they’re stuck in yet another argument about jonghyun’s flirting. jonghyun’s upset & wants to leave, allen has had one too many & the situation ends with jonghyun being treated for a few minor injuries.

          now, jonghyun is out of the relationship & made the move to los angeles in an attempt to put space between himself & the tumultuous life he lived in new york. legally speaking, jonghyun & allen are still married, but it’s only because allen ( for whatever reason ) refuses to sign the divorce papers & it’s been a little over three years. he’s started going by his maiden name again & his career has remained on top, but he truly hasn’t let himself fully be released from the clutches of allen. 

          jonghyun is bisexual as fuck & won’t let you think otherwise. since ending it with allen, he’s been kinda ho’in’ it up around town without so much as a care about who sees him. looks like he might bite you & he probably will if you make him mad enough. this is slightly unnecessary information, but he’s power bottom as hell & it shows :/ but is vers as well & a little kinky boi. he’s really nice though & love to talk fashion when given the chance ! he’s never the type to discourage people so whenever someone tells him they wanna model or work in fashion, he’s always down for it ! he’s very cutthroat, though & just because he could be considered something of a ‘veteran model’ since he’s been in the game for almost ten years, he treats everything like it’s his first time all over again. tl;dr : nice but will kill you if he needs to & prefers to not talk about his ex-husband.

⁃ anyhaps he doesn’t stay in valdez b/c he’s like nah .. not my scene lmao , but goes to school a couple states over in arizona , so he can be close to his momther and father … aw , but closer to mom cos she’s more Valid but he keeps in regular contact with his father and tries to see him at least once a year

⁃ he studies psychology and loves it , loves school , becomes a counselling psychologist specifically for those with ptsd ( but also has the right requisites for like psychiatry cos he took bio or whatever life sci requisite u need idk ) 

⁃ ok bare with me cos im not even sure on the details, but in the span of him first meeting his pops and now , dad ends up in jail ( he owed money to the savages, so did a job to pay it off which included a home invasion with several other ppl in which one person died, even tho he wasn’t the one who shot him , he took the fall cos he was pretty expendable considering he wasn’t actually part of the gang ) , ethan offers to help with costs of legal advice and his sentence is reduced to like ten years

Day #9: A song that makes you happy

Secret Weapons, Comeback Season (2017)

I couldn’t have discovered this song at a better time. I first heard this on my Discover Weekly at a time when I was looking for a way out of a job that has become toxic and when I seriously considered applying to grad schools.

Before that point, I was just going through the motions. It was three years since I dropped out of law school and left the group of people I was talking about on Day 4 of this challenge. I withdrew into my little corner of the world. I never reached out to my friends. I watched videos by Cracked and Wisecrack and read think pieces on The Atlantic and The New Yorker. I was unemployed for four months, working the night shift at our small store and listening to podcasts to pass the time. I did a complete 180 on my eating habits. I binged constantly. I loved the comfort. It felt like a slumber party with all of my best friends.

I had my first paying job in September of 2016, just a day after I turned twenty-three and several pounds heavier. I learned so much about our planet and I got to know my country a little more, even though for the most part I felt like I wasn’t making a difference. Three years later, I was miserable. I dreaded the two-hour commute each way that I used to love. I kept getting work that had legal aspects to it, which I loathed since I wanted to put my law school past behind me. I represented our office in so many meetings and conferences. At that point, I was given more autonomy and responsibility and my bosses put more trust in me. I guess people saw me as becoming more capable, but I felt that I was losing control. 

The upside was that, finally - after some courage and some prodding by my mom - I applied for grad school. I have this vision of me in academia since I was seventeen, and at that point where I had the university brochure in my hands I felt like a turnaroud swing was coming. Like, I was broken and crestfallen for years after forcing myself to do what people expected of me and failing. Like I was hiding and shielding myself from the big scary world for so long, and suddenly here I was taking a chance on myself, doing what I wanted and becoming who I wanted to be for a change. I had no doubt that I will be accepted to that program - I graduated with honors from a top university and the graduate degree I was pursuing was related with my work back then - but I went overboard with the admissions exam lol. I wrote about consumer protection and I wrote at the back of the sheet. I almost had to ask for another sheet to try and throw in everything I know about the topic. I got something to prove here.

Good day! This is to inform you of your admission to the Master of Public Administration effective this First Semester 2019-2020. 

They sent it on a Monday, July 17, 2019.

I remember that day when I didn’t show up for work to submit my resume in other offices that were hiring. It was the beginning of summer, and I was listening to this song. I was so scared. Not just because my family couldn’t afford me being unemployed for a few months. I was leaving what was familiar to me. However difficult my job was or how many times I was too much of an emotional wreck to even just send an email, it was still familiar to me. And I knew at that point that if everything went to the gutter I had no one to blame but myself.

But I also felt hopeful. And powerful. That I had something to look forward to and that I finally realized that if I can push myself, I can make something happen for me instead of waiting around and relying on milktea and Planet Money for company. This is why I love this song so much, and why I choose to have this for a “happy” song. This is not happy as in drink and dance the night away. This is happy as in second chances.

I’m pretty much the same person I was when I first listened to this song last year. I’m still having troubles with my comprehension and in following instructions. I’m still lazy and emotional. But I have a new job where I’m actually nicer to people now than I was in my old job, if you could believe it. I just submitted my introductory chapter to my research professor. Honestly, I kinda missed scouring the internet for articles to build a literature review. And talking about populist movements and legislative agendas are getting my confidence back, even if it’s just baby steps for now.  I struggled and fumbled and now I’m on my comeback season.

Looking back, I’m so thankful that I got another shot. That I had the chance to turn my life around. Then, I had nothing. Now I’m on my way to have it all.

born to a politician and a marketing executive, willow was always offered everything in life. she grew up in a penthouse, always had the prettiest bows , so on so on you guy get my point. her life was very big little lies pre-murder plot line. her parents were fairly cold, though she tells herself it’s just because they worked so hard all the time. unlike some kids, it was never something she could accept and got used to, she’s a feelsy person somehow and it was always in the back of her head.

she definitely sought the attention she didn’t get at home in her social life, she’s been the same way since she was a child until present day.   always seeking approval from her peers, always trying too hard to get every single kid to love her. but it also went the other way, going out of her way to include kids whenever she could because she knew how it felt. she was very well loved by many people, and with her fierce attitude and smart mouth was/is usually the one protecting all her friends and even non friends.

defintely a very large brat, but more of the rebellious type in comparisons to the ones who think they deserve everything handed to them. she’s always been impossible to control and yes she’s always done it to gain her parents attention. she went as far to do stuff that got her in big trouble with the law, if her dad wasn’t a politician she definitely would’ve been on Scared Straight. This is what got her sent to a boarding school, her parents realized she wouldn’t grow out of it  and of course they didn’t want to just talk to her about it. so yeah, she got to see them every holiday.

here she continued to cause problems but it was in very different ways. it was still in trouble making devil child ways but she also started to cause trouble in the sense that she was always challenging authority and speaking out and it’s really where she came into her label as the activist. before she didn’t really pay too much attention to the world around her because she’s clearly super privelleged and not just because of her money but she could just throw money around to fix things. she couldn’t at boarding school, and it really made her find her voice and open her eyes and she decided she really, really, wanted to do something to fix the world. of course she dives completely into anything she does so don’t be surprised when she accomplishes this.

boarding school is how she also came to develop phat intimacy and trust issues! she dates this older guy: completely enamored with him off the bat, he’s the guy everyone has a crush on, typical fuck boy, doesn’t even treat her right but hey he’s supposed to be a prize right? honestly there were so many problems that i don’t even want to list bc unneeded trigger warnings and too long. back to the point, one day… she happened to just happen to idk happen to kiss her best friend. thought nothing of it at first like, she’s 17 right? normal. —– nope she’s a big fat lesbian she realized a fat chunk of time later. of course, she’s not cocky but she definitely is sure of herself and after working up some courage broke up with the boyfriend and told him why. he didn’t like it! got very angry, physically in the moment, later angry enough to leak very personal things and it was all just very bad for someone so young from someone she did love in a certain way yeah

she’s headed off to law school since then though, i was kind of inspired by legally blonde so this part (and others) were kind of based off of her. no one actually believed her when she talked about changing the world and helping people so when she went to law school everyone was completely shocked. and she’s very very smart, so she’s completely kicking everyone’s ass.

her parents have recently kicked her out of their lives because she was just not agreeing w her father’s politics like over twitter nd stuff hgjfhgjk lmao but a huge fight occurred nd they gave her either u be quiet or ur out of this family ultimatum so ya now she’s broke nd has only friends for fam! she’s been working as a receptionist mostly, tho she works occasionally as like a lounge singer kinda thing where it’s like live entertainment nd she’s always thought singing was cool nd she has a good voice so hey! 

her personality kind of reminds me of amy santiago to be completely truthful, just maybe a little bit of a hardass. she’s very excitable with whatever sparks attention which is a lot and is very girl next door once you speak with her as much as she seems like a rich brat

she’s a complete nerd — knows about so many things and will rave about them all if given the chance (the ocean is her weak point)

she doesn’t half ass things, she has a lot of passion in her and it transfers into whatever she’s focusing on at the time... but she does give off the impression that she treats everything like a joke like other than school 

very goofy, although she’s kind of in her shell at the same time. she is a little bit more introverted, not so much shy but definitely isn’t the first to initiate the “hey i’m wil and here are my two truths….” she’s somewhere in the middle  

has very deep issues with trust because of what happened to her. honestly she wishes she could just go back to trusting blindly because she misses intimacy with new people and because it happened so young it’s always stopped her from having intimacy romantically. she has pretty much a legit fear of it all. even with old friends sometimes.

can get very wrapped up and serious, definitely needs people to make her chill and go back to herself

Gov. Gary Herbert says he doesn't like to kill babies, so he signed a measure into law that makes abortion illegal after 18 weeks. Some women may not even know they're pregnant after 18 weeks, but so what. Ohio has done one better, banning abortion when a fetal heartbeat can be detected — about six weeks. Those new laws come on the heels of a federal court ruling striking down as unconstitutional North Carolina’s ban on abortions after the 20 weeks. But so what. We now have Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court and its a whole, new ball game. There are some 20 such cases wending their way through the courts that could change the rights laid out in the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling. The law was refined in a 1992 case to allow states to place restrictions on abortion as long as it “does not create an undue burden” on a woman’s right to abortion. But what's an “undue burden,” anyway? And who do these women think they are, demanding rights over their own bodies? They should feel lucky they aren't locked up, like Margaret Sanger was in 1916 for distributing information on birth control. That was before safe abortions were legal and so women didn't get them — except the tens of thousands who did by hook or by crook. Ah, the good old days.

Doesn't Donny sound a lot like pops? Who can forget “Lock her up. ”Wouldn't it be great if Don Jr. ran for president after The Donald finishes his historic presidency — if they both don't get indicted. And Junior knows it's important to identify enemies for people to really hate, like the Fake News, Hillary Clinton and AOC. The newcomer from the Bronx is one of those elitist former waitresses behind the Green New Deal, who foment environmental sustainability along with economic and social justice — if that isn't socialism, what is? The call to save the planet for everyone isn't fooling Republicans. No way. They know “This Land Is Your Land”-crap is just a sneaky way to redistribute wealth. And that's not the America we know.

Mike Lee To The Rescue

Our beloved Sen. Mike Lee has shown the world that Ronald Reagan really did ride a velociraptor. Yes, he's our man Mike on the national stage, demonstrating how to poo-poo the Green New Deal and environmentalism with giant posters of weird shit on the floor of the United States Senate. It makes you proud that we've sent a man of his capacity to the capital to take on tough challenges. And he's got the answer: have more offspring. “Fall in love, get married and have babies,” he told the nation and the world — and all those babies will grow up and solve all our problems. A hundred years ago, there were less than100 million Americans. Today, the U.S. has 327 million of the world's 7.7 billion people. A century ago, the planet Earth was home to just 2 billion. If we keep growing like this, just think of all the environmental problems we can solve. We can find ways to feed everyone. We can solve global water shortages. And we can graduate even more BYU big thinkers, like Mike Lee, to save the world for unbridled capitalism. It kinda makes you warm and fuzzy, don't it?

Post Script — President Donald Trump is cutting off financial aid to what Fox & Friends call “the three Mexican countries” (otherwise known as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador) from which thousands of immigrants are seeking asylum in the United States. After all, if you've seen one of them brown immigrants, you've seen them all. Some might argue that cutting $550 million from programs aimed at making life better for people in Central America isn't all that smart, if you want to dampen immigration. And compared to the $4.5 billion we spend annually on border security, it doesn't seem like much. But man, it feels good to lash out at all those Mexicans or whoever those little brown people are.

their pops is a cop which is 10/10 lit apart from the fact that big brother hated how sheltered their father was determined to keep the two and he basically just complained 24/7 about all the kids he’d have to take to the station and what a disgrace it was and warned his kids to never wound up like them.

basically flashforward her brother just wasn’t having any of that shit and rebelled against their pops.

and it just became a thing where her brother was so determined to wind up their dad bc he knew he could by going completely against him and his pops would never let him get arrested or in any legal trouble because it would damage their ‘picture perfect’ family image. 

while all this was going down sunny was legit scared shitless of disappointing her father? like to the point it’s actually crippling and she spent hours upon hours trying to do everything to be the image of perfection; she’d study for the perfect grades, she attended tennis lessons at the local country club with family friends, she went to church, she volunteered her time. 

back to when shit rly rly rly hit the fan. basically, their dad realized that his son was only going to keep acting out, and resulted to punishing him physically as he had found no other method would work. this happened a couple of times on and off until her brother fled from their home one night to never return. 

which should’ve been a good thing really, it would mean there wouldn’t be so much tension in the home. bUT NAAAAAH. 

because of this the pressure on sunny was amplified by an excessive amount; her father paying such close detail to everything she did to ensure she wouldn’t screw up their image or reputation or fall out of line like his son had. 

and basically she started getting the physical abuse directed at her? but it was for super petty reasons like, if she came home even a minute late from curfew, or her grade dropped from an A to a B, or if she mixed up her plans and was unable to attend an event; basically it just was really fucking out of hand and as i said before, very petty? 

but pops didn’t think he was doing anything wrong?? it was just his way of keeping his kids kid in line?? aND beCAuse hE’s A coP he’s super high n mighty n cherished by everyone and it kinda makes sunny sick because none of them understand what goes on behind closed doors smh.

oh also she’s currently a law student despite the fact that’s not at all what she wanted to do because again....... daddy issues didn’t wanna disappoint pops because even though she’s twenty-two she’s still very much under his control and can’t imagine ever standing up to him.

Lanamia is v cute and I support it I can imagine little Mia being totally head over heels for super cool put together upperclassman Lana Skye but then once they get together it’s revealed that Lana is actually a MASSIVE NERD and tries to be cool and put together but is also a super dork and Mia finds it precious and once Mia starts to come out of her shell she’s like really playful always teasing Lana to watch her get flustered and to try to get her lighten up bc she’s always such Serious Law Student and she needs to have more fun like they both have so much fun together I love them and then SL-9 happens and Lana feels like she has to distance herself from everyone emotionally and it gets really sad after that shit tho idk what else you want me to know? Character dev for Jack!Derek and Bitty!Stiles (and some of the others) -- a bit different from OMGCP!

Warning/Disclaimer: I know nothing about Hockey FYI. I have never even seen a game. All my knowledge comes from OMGCP, wikipedia, the NCAA, NHL, and various other HL websites/resources. OMGCP belongs to ngoziu you can read it omgcheckplease it is a brilliant story (I love it so much!).

Jack!Derek - Son of Talia & Jerome Hale (The Hockey Power Couple); Brother of Laura Hale (2016 Olympic Figure Skating Gold Medalist)

Talia Maheegan was of the few non-Goalie women Hockey Players in Professional Men’s Hockey. She was part of the Women’s Hockey team at Beacon Hills University before she was recruited by Leksands IF (Elitserien, now the Swedish Hockey League). A few years later she was offered a contract by the Bakersfield Condors. She was ready to be closer to home, so she came back although she was a woman, when a few of the guys in the NHL team got badly injured, she was moved up to the Oilers roster. 

She met her future husband, Jerome Hale, when the Oilers played the Bruins in her rookie game and she gave him a nosebleed. She was the first female Alternate Captain for the Oilers when they won the Stanley Cup in 1984. And the first female Captain when they won in 1985. She retired in 1986 when she was pregnant, had twins Laura and Derek. 

Jerome Hale played for the Bruins but was traded in 1985-86 he was the Captain of the Oilers from 1987-1993 - Derek pooped in the Stanley cup twice during that time - in 1987 & 1988. 

Derek and Laura started skating young, Laura wasn’t into Hockey, but she started enjoying figure skating, and took that route.

Derek looked up to both his parents and wanted to follow in their footsteps. He went into the Juniors where he met Kate Argent (maybe Kate’s dad hated her and Talia for being women in a Men’s sport or something, so there was a lot of sexism and prejudice there, and internalized misogyny maybe? If werewolves exist in this verse then she’s from a werewolf hunter family as is canon and she is using him to get info as is canon). She was beautiful and ambitious, and Derek and Kate became good friends, best friends even... then more. There was a lot of pressure to do well in the juniors as it would lead into the draft which would lead to the NHL. He worked hard and honed his skills for two years before he could enter the draft.

Kate’s brother was also in the Juniors, but he was reaching the maximum age for both the draft and the league. There was a lot of talk about how Derek was top pick. Kate would keep getting in his head, Derek was on anxiety meds since he joined the juniors, Kate knew and she kept telling him to take more so that he wasn’t off his game. Just before the draft picks his parents, younger sister, aunt and uncle got into a fatal car accident with no survivors (a drunk driver drove them off the road If werewolves exist -- Gerard put a hit on the family and got them killed -- but obvs. can’t get Derek and Laura now it would be too suspicious). Laura was at a Figure Skating meet in Europe. 

Derek took his anxiety meds, alcohol and something that Kate slipped him and had a reaction that sent him to the hospital. He wakes up to Laura slumped at his bedside still in her leotard. He pulls out of the draft, the media calls it an overdose, he doesn’t correct them. He goes to a rehab center after his family’s memorial service. Laura sorts out everything with the legal team while he is in rehab. 

When he gets out he supports her while she continues working on her figure skating and he tries to figure out his life without hockey. And he can’t. One day Laura comes in throws down a Beacon Hills University Pamphlet on the counter, and when Derek looks at her questioningly, she says “Ma went there. It’s where she truly fell in love with Hockey. They would want you to be happy, Der! I want you to be happy. You’re miserable, please. Think about it. You can major in History and play Hockey. I already called the coaches, they’ve already said they’d give you a Scholarship if you wanted it.” 

Derek gets on the ice for the first time in one and a half years. He’s rusty, but it’s in his blood. He trains hard for 3 months before he thinks he’s fit enough to go to college. He applies anyways. He gets in -- even without the Scholarship -- he was good enough to. 

Bitty!Stiles - Son of Claudia (former Figure Skater) and Sheriff Noah Stilinski

Stiles’ mother dies when he is eight, and Stiles is kinda lost after that. When he’s 10 he finds his mom’s cooks books and he feels a connection to her again so he starts baking. He bakes more than he or his dad can eat, so he takes the excess to the Sheriff’s station (where his dad works) or to the farmer’s market where he makes money off of his pies. 

There is this huge rift between him and his dad, and he can’t seem to figure out how to mend it. He loves his dad, and he knows his dad loves him. But his dad started drinking after his mom died, and his mom was the glue in the family. Sometimes his dad looks at him and gets this pained look in his eyes and Stiles thinks it’s because he looks so much like her. 

Stiles started ice skating with his mom because she used to be a figure skater. She taught him all sorts of neat tricks and even tried to get him to enter a few competitions, but after she died it became another thing that became harder to do. He still went skating every weekend, but he didn’t really feel like figure skating anymore. 

His dad coached peewee football, so in an effort to bond with his dad, Stiles joined the football team but when he gets tackled within the first thirty seconds, and ends up with a compound fracture, it instills the fear of God in him, and he refuses to ever go back, regardless of what his dad says. 

How he ends up playing Hockey is a mystery to him because Hockey is a high-contact sport just like football. But he’s in a co-ed no-contact Hockey team and he meets some amazing people. He starts enjoying being on the ice again, and he starts feeling another connection to his mother -- so he starts figure skating again as well -- just a little bit -- nothing like the fancy stuff his mother made him learn. 

Stiles’ was always the underdog, he was bullied in high-school because his mother died. He was bullied because his dad was a policeman, he was bullied because he came to school in a cruiser, he was bullied because he looked weird, or talked weird, or had ADHD. He didn’t have friends (not for lack of trying). He was called homophobic slurs because he did figure skating and couldn’t take a hit (he’s bi, thanks a lot for bi-erasure assholes! at least call him the bi-phobic slurs!) He can’t find a place for himself so he starts a v-log his Junior year of high school. For some reason people enjoy his sarcasm coupled with the sweet baked goods he tutors them on. So he keeps making the videos. 

His dad can’t afford to send him to College, but he has a few options though -- a merit Scholarship (but his ADHD make it hard for him to keep his grades up), a Federal Load (does he want the government hounding him for years after he graduates), a Sports Scholarship (can he get into the NCAA?). He applies to BHU because Beacon Hills is still in California (so he’s still close to his dad, but far enough away that it’s a few hours away by road or at least a short flight away). He send a tape of him playing Hockey as well as figure skating to the Coaches along with his Scholarship Application. He didn’t expect to -- but he gets in! His dad is so proud. He comes out to his dad, but his dad doesn’t believe him. Stiles doesn’t let that bum him out though -- he’s going to college. 

BHMH 

Isaac, Boyd (Sophomores) - Live in the Attic the Haus - best friends. Boyd is quiet and constant. Isaac is sassy and loud. Together they are constantly coming up with all kinds of shenanigans. They are the ones who handle all the parties and know pretty much everyone there is to know on campus. 

Jordan (Junior like Derek) - Lives at the Haus - is everyone’s best friend. But isn’t wild/crazy. Is wildly popular. He is beautiful and used to be a model. He is a women’s and gender studies major, but he’s also studying pre-law and criminology. 

Greenburg as suggested by Nonnie (Senior) - The metaphysical Goalie - LOL - I couldn’t think of who else to put here - I guess I could have added Peter (but I really don’t like him, maybe he can be a lax bro) - gives his dibs to Stiles. 

Erica, Allison (Sophomores) - Non-Goalie team-mates who initially faced sexism from the senior teammates (not from Derek or Jordan) but proved themselves after their preseason when they took down the biggest player skate circles around all the other players, not giving up the puck even once (but also refusing to score because the guys on their team are assholes). They live in an apartment near the Haus together. They were not surprised when Jordan got the dibs instead of one of them (Derek got dibs from the outgoing captain his freshman year, when Derek was voted incoming Captain). 

Scott (Freshman like Stiles) - Stiles’ Roommate, becomes Stiles’ best friend. Wants to be a vet. Is a Derek Hale fan, but doesn’t like Derek in RL. Is a cuddle monster. Is smitten with both Kira and Allison.

Kira is the Manager (Sophomore) - Doing a semester in Japan (Studying Art and Mythology). Cannot ice-skate. 

Lydia is a girl who Stiles crushes on in one of his classes, and he invites her to Epikegster and she says yes (but as a friend). She is into Jordan. When Jordan finds out he tries to dissuade her even though he is hella into her brains and beauty combo. Stiles is bummed, but he can’t deny his friend someone awesome like Lydia. So he totally gives Jordan a thumbs up, and tells him to pursue it. Lydia and Stiles get to know each other over time and realize how great they are as friends, anything else would have been Chaos. This is also around the time Stiles starts to realize he has major feelings for Derek. Feelings that make his stomach swoop, and his breath catch, and blood rush to his cheeks, even though Derek doesn’t really do anything (other than buy him his favourite coffee, or bake a perfect lattice crust for their American Food and Culture Class, or take his cold finger into his warm hands and rub them, just to hopefully bring some warmth because he knows how cold Stiles gets (Mt. Shasta gets really cold compared to San Diego). 

Jackson and Peter can be the dreaded Lax bros. idk. Peter isn’t related to Derek.

[Orin Kerr] Taking the Bar Exam as a 46-Year-Old Law Professor

A lot of recent law school graduates are going to be taking the bar exam in less than two weeks. I can relate. I took the bar exam just last summer, twenty years after I took it the first time. Here's what happened, together with some possible lessons about the experience.

I. Why Take the Bar Exam?

I'll start with the obvious question: Why? I took the exam because of a job change. I accepted a teaching job last June to start teaching at the University of Southern California in January 2018. You don't need to be a bar member to teach law. But I do occasional part-time legal work in addition to teaching. I wanted to keep that up when I moved to California, so I wanted to join the California bar.

But there was a complication: California rejects bar reciprocity with other states. I passed the New Jersey bar exam in 1997, after I graduated from law school. I later waived in to the District of Columbia. But California doesn't let out-of-state lawyers waive in. If you want to practice law in California, you have to take and pass the California bar exam.

One way out of taking the bar would have been to rely on the federal practice exception. Technically, state bars can't really regulate purely federal law practice in their states. If you're a member of the United States Supreme Court bar, for example, in theory you could go to any state and maintain a U.S. Supreme Court practice there without needing a state bar membership. But the federal practice exception is surprisngly murky in scope when you get down to the details. And I didn't want to rely on it given even just the theoretical risk that it might expose me to unauthorized practice of law claims. So I decided to sit for the California bar, which was coming up in less than two months after I signed up to join USC.

II. What's On The California Bar Exam?

The California Bar exam is known to be pretty difficult. Part of that is because it has a lot of topics. The topics include:

California has in the past had a three-day bar exam, but that has recently changed: The exam is now two days. The sort-of good news is that I was able to take an additionally shortened exam, the Attorney's Exam, that California permits for lawyers who have been practicing elsewhere for a few years. The Attorney's Exam is just one (very long) day. It's the regular written essay exam minus the multiple choice Multistate Bar Exam. You show up for the first day and take the essays, and you don't have to take the second day that is the multiple choice part.

At first blush it seemed like a blessing to be able to take the Attorney's Exam. I didn't have to suffer through a second day of testing. And I was flying out to California to take the exam, so I could get back home to DC more quickly. Over time, though, I came to think the Attorney's Exam is actually harder to study for than the regular exam. The multiple choice Multistate Bar Exam only covers seven topics that are 1L and core subjects. Knowing that lets you focus your efforts; you know you'll be tested on those subjects. In contrast, the essay exam draws from all of the topics, and the only subject that always appears is something on Professional Responsibility. That meant you had to spread your efforts out widely, as you mostly had no idea which of the many topics might be tested.

III. How Did I Study?

I didn't need help with Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. Constitutional Law wasn't going to be too hard for me, either, and I had taught federal Evidence Law a few years back and could dust that off pretty easily. But I had never studied a bunch of the topics on the bar exam. Subjects like Trusts, Partnership, Wills, California Community Property Law, California Civil Procedure, and California Evidence were all new to me. And although I had once studied 1L subjects like Property and Contracts, that was over twenty years ago. I didn't remember very much. I needed some bar prep help.

So I took Bar/Bri. Yup, just like old times. I had taken it in 1997, and I became a repeat customer last summer. Fortunately all the lectures were online through the Bar/Bri website, so I didn't have to show up in person and see my former students in bar prep class. I found myself watching Bar/Bri videos, sometimes taught by professors I knew or knew of, while filling in the big lecture notes books they give you. It was a strange experience.

I found Bar/Bri pretty effective in 1997. But I confess I found it underwhelming in 2017. Part of that may have been that I was a nontraditional student the second time around. For understandable reasons, they don't pitch bar prep classes to professors. Recent law grads usually have been exposed to most of the topics on the bar relatively recently; they often need mostly refreshers of stuff they have more or less seen within the last two years. Professors twenty years out are in a different place. We know an insane amount about a few topics, but next to nothing about others. So I needed to learn a bunch of subjects from scratch and to do it quickly.

I found the Bar/Bri materials an inefficient way to do that because the rules were presented without context. For me, at least, the fastest way to learn a new area of law is to first learn what the law is trying to do. Most fields of law are trying to achieve some goals or balance some interests in a way that you can state in a sentence or two. Once you know the goals of the law, you can understand the rules in that field as an effort to achieve the goals. It becomes a lot easier to learn the rules because they tend to fit the goals. My frustration with Bar/Bri is that the rules were not given any purpose. The rules were just rules, hundreds or thousands of rules to memorize, presented rule after rule after rule. It was something like memorizing Pi to a thousand places. It may have been a good fit for students who have recently taken classes in related subjects. But from my odd perspective, at least, it was frustrating.

IV: How Stressful Was It?

I was interested to see, when I signed up to take the bar, if it would be as stressful as it had been the first time. When I was a student, way back when, I didn't test lightly. I would go all out, being super-stressed for weeks. So I wondered if taking the bar exam a second time would be a lot easier and less intense twenty years later.

I wish I could say I was pretty chill about the whole thing. But nope, I wasn't. Yup, it was just as stressful in 2017 as it had been in 1997. I had more or less set aside about four weeks to study for the exam, and that meant about two days for each subject. I tried to spend roughly one day learning the basics of each subject, and then one day just memorizing the rules for that subject. But it was hard, and stressful, just as it had been right after law school.

Part of the problem was that intense memorization seemed so foreign. I wasn't worried about writing a nice lawyerly answer if I knew the rules. But studying meant trying to memorize a few hundred rules about random subjects I would never need. My middle-aged brain didn't take kindly to that. In my world, you pretty much never need to memorize anything. You can always consult your notes. Getting back into the memorization mindset after two decades off was harder than I expected.

Granted, I had the luxury that I didn't actually need to pass for my job. Most professors are not members of the state bars where they teach. So no worry if I failed, right? Well, yes and no. A lot of people were quick to remind me that former Stanford Law Dean Kathleen Sullivan had failed the California bar the first time. Many remembered that about her despite her brilliant academic and professional career. (I could see how it happened, too; if you don't spend enough time memorizing the silly rules you know you won't need IRL, you're unlikely to pass.) I could just imagine showing up at a new law school known among students only for an Above the Law headline, This Law Professor Can't Even Pass the Bar! So while I didn't need to pass the bar, I also kinda did.

V. Taking The Exam Itself

The actual process of taken exam was pretty similar to what it had been in 1997. The biggest difference was that in 1997, you either wrote your essays by hand (as I did) or you used a typewiter. By 2017, the standard was to use laptops, and that meant getting used to the ExamSoft software. As luck would have it, my laptop froze about 10 minutes into the exam. I was able to get back up and running without losing much time, though, and fortunately it didn't freeze up again.

The exam itself went fine. It was strange to be back in the position of legal exam taker instead of legal exam writer and legal exam grader. But I figured that was sort of an advantage, too. When I wasn't sure about a rule, I knew from experience how to write an answer that best obfuscated my lack of knowledge by burying it in a sea of otherwise-seemingly informed and intelligent words.

It didn't hurt that the last question, worth 25% of the exam grade, was a Fourth Amendment question. In the problem, you are a defense attorney and you are writing a letter to an AUSA about why he shouldn't bring a case in light of a Fourth Amendment violation you articulate your letter. They give you a fake Fourth Amendment opinion to rely on as precedent in your letter. I had to laugh when I saw the opinion, as I remembered reading the circuit court decision on which the fake opinion was loosely based.

VI. Reflections on the Experience

Happily, I passed. So the story has a happy ending. But we law professors like to make everything a learning experience, so here are some possible lessons I take from the experience.

(a) The California Bar Authorities Should Allow Reciprocity. It seems silly to not permit any reciprocity with lawyers who are practicing in other states. It would be fair to require experienced lawyers from other states to take a CLE course on a few specific areas of California law that may be particularly important. But not allowing any reciprocity with other states seems like pure protectionism. It's just trying to help California lawyers by making it hard for other lawyers to move here. I get that everything is overregulated in California. But it's still lame.

(b) There Are Too Many Topics on the California Bar Exam. I think the primary role of a bar exam is to require a certain amount of lawyerly competence. If that's right, I don't see why the bar exam requires learning so many topics. You just memorize some rules in case they show up, and then you forget all of them immediately after. I don't see the point in having so many different topics on the exam. It's not like you can test lawyerly competence among twenty topics any better than with ten topics. It just requires more time memorizing, and it's not obvious what that has to do with lawyerly ability.

(c) The Exam Should Be Better Run. The administration of the test on exam day left a lot to be desired. We were required to show up at 8am, but it took about two hours after that for the exam to actually start. There was only a 45-minute break for lunch, and then we had to come back to the exam room where we waited another hour or so to start the afternoon part. We didn't finish until 7pm. Maybe I'm just impatient in my old age, but I don't see why a 6.5 hour exam has to take 11 hours to administer.

(d) On Test Day, Don't Wear School-Related Clothing. The bar exam brings together people from all walks of life. Some people attended schools where the bar passage rates are very high, and others went to schools where it is not. Given the stress of exam day, don't wear clothing from your school, especially if you went to a school with a high bar-passage rate. It's just obnoxious.

(e) Yes, You Can Learn the Rule Against Perpetuities. My Property professor didn't cover it my 1L year, and I only learned a little bit of it when I took the exam after law school. But this time around I got into it, and I think I finally figured it out. It's a pretty interesting common law doctrine! Of course I have forgotten it now, see (b) supra, but at least there was a brief time when I understood it.

(f) Just Get It Done. Finally, a note to those reading who are taking the exam in less than two weeks. I know it's crazy stressful now. But it will be over soon, and when it is over you can forget everything you just learned. It's just a strange rite of passage, and when the exam is over and you pass you never have to take it again. At least unless you move to California someday.

i was driving my 95 civic coupe, and was waiting for the green light, so it turned green and i started going, and was rear-ended by a 2008 ford f-150 with a brush guard, his truck wasn't damaged except for a dent on the brush guard. my car had the trunk smashed in a little, and the bumper was smashed in too, but after the crash, i tried to move my car, and it wouldn't go into gear, and there was oil all over the road, so i suspected my manual transmission was damaged as well, my friend confirmed this when he looked under and said the transmission was cracked. we both got whiplash from the accident, and the police officer determined that the guy in the ford was at fault. i have nationwide liability insurance and the other guy had nationwide as well""

Okay so I got into some accidents messing around along with some tickets a few years ago and about 2 in a half years ago a DUI. The car insurance should get lowered a little I think by next July 2014 because of good record for almost 3 years knock on wood so my question is should I attempt to find a different insurance by now or what? Or should I just sell car and find a ride with friends to work somehow? This is really taking every penny I have. I pay what I can while my family pays the rest.
