James Earl Jones by Susan King
Here are some facts you may not know about James Earl Jones:
Tumblr media
His father Robert Earl Jones played Luther in the Oscar-winning best film, THE STING (’73).
He appeared in the X-rated movie, END OF THE ROAD (’70), with Stacy Keach.
He once dated Oscar-nominated actress Carrie Snodgress (DIARY OF A MAD HOUSEWIFE, ‘70).
He was a pre-med student in college.
He made his Broadway debut more than 60 years ago in the multi-Tony Award-winning drama Sunrise at Campobello.
From 1961-64 he was a cast member of the award-winning off-Broadway production of The Blacks: A Clown Show, which also featured Cicely Tyson, Roscoe Lee Brown, Maya Angelou, Louis Gossett Jr. and Godfrey Cambridge.
From the time he was five, he was raised by his grandparents on their farm in Jackson, MI.
For eight years, he was mute. Jones’ stutter was so bad when he was young, that he didn’t speak. “I was a stutterer. So, my first year of school was my first mute year, and then those mute years continued until I got to high school.”
His English teacher Donald Crouch helped him gain his voice through his love of poetry, public speaking and acting, though he did have stuttering issues into adulthood.
Of course, it’s hard to believe that Jones’ powerful baritone voice—which has terrified audiences as Darth Vader in the STAR WARS franchise captivated fans as the strong but loving father Mufasa in the animated film THE LION KING (’94) and the current photo-realistic blockbuster remake, in addition to being the authoritative voice of CNN—was silenced for nearly a decade.
Over the decades, the 88-year-old Jones has earned Emmys, Tony Awards, a Grammy and an honorary Oscar. Nevertheless, concerns were raised when his picture wasn’t included in the promotional material for the new THE LION KING and when he didn’t appear at the world premiere in Los Angeles. But director Jon Favreau told USA Today that the actor is in good health, but he lives in New York and chose not to attend.
“This is something that takes a lot out of you to do,” Favreau explained. “So, his participation was geared more toward his performance.”
Tumblr media
As remarkable as his performances have been on screen and television, Jones is really in his element on stage. I’ve had the great fortune of seeing him twice on stage, including in 1988 when he appeared in Los Angeles in his Tony Award-winning performance in August Wilson’s Fences. As soon as he walked out on stage, he grabbed the audience and never let go for nearly three hours. During a scene in which he raged at his wife, Jones was so intense I thought he was going to collapse. He didn’t, but I thought I was going to collapse from exhaustion when the play was over.
When I interviewed him two years later for the L.A. Times, he confessed how upset he was when audiences laughed at the dramatic moments.
“Do you know what laughter is?’” asked Jones, who is a formidable presence in person. “For American audiences, laughter is rejection. If you sat a person in a seat by themselves without a group, they would deal with a play. But in a group, their instinct is to reject it with derisive laughter. It means you lost them.”
He continued: “Give me a genuine response and I can absorb that. I can incorporate that in my performance. I want to say to them, OK, I’ll take a break, and you can make your sounds and when you’re finished, I’ll resume the play.”
Jones didn’t return to Broadway until 2005 when he and Leslie Uggams starred in a revival of Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond, earning a Tony nomination for his performance.
The actor made his film debut in Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 masterpiece DR. STRANGELOVE, as B-52 bombardier St. Lothar Zogg, and three years later he joined Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Alec Guinness in THE COMEDIANS.
Tumblr media
But it was THE GREAT WHITE HOPE (’70) that changed his movie career. Jones was the toast of Broadway in 1968 with the play version for which Jones and his leading lady Jane Alexander both earned Tony Awards. Jones portrayed Jack Jefferson, a boxer at the turn of the 20th century, based on the legendary Jack Johnson. Directed by Martin Ritt, the film version didn’t do very well at the box office and received mixed critical response.
In his New York Times review, Vincent Canby criticized the movie adding “the film contains a performance that makes the windy, otherwise empty movie seem inhabited, if not by life, at least by art. James Earl Jones, who re-creates the role of Jack Jefferson, he played on Broadway, is marvelous to watch, combining heroic physical presence, technique and (to me) a completely mysterious way of projecting intelligence, so that the character commands attention even when the drama doesn’t.”
Jones became the second African-American to be nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his towering performance. Sidney Poitier was first nominated for THE DEFIANT ONES (’58) and then made history when he won for LILLIES OF THE FIELD (’63).
Though Jones is best known for his dramatic work, he demonstrated his romantic comedy chops in CLAUDINE (’74), in which he turns on the charm as a carefree bachelor garbage collector who begins dating 36-year-old welfare mother (Diahann Carroll) of six. Diana Sands was originally cast as Claudine, but learned she was dying of cancer and insisted her good friend Carroll get the role. She ended up earning an Oscar nomination for lead actress and she and Jones received Golden Globe nominations.
Tumblr media
Judith Crist in New York magazine wrote that she thought Jones gave the “performance of his career as the bright, charming chap who chose to be a garbage man so that nobody would envy or dislike him.“
Jones received his honorary Oscar in November 2011 while he as appearing on the London stage with Vanessa Redgrave and Boyd Gaines in Driving Miss Daisy. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ has a clip of the event on YouTube. At the curtain call, Redgrave announces Jones is receiving the Oscar on stage and introduces Sir Ben Kingsley who has Jones’ Oscar. Jones looks like a little boy filled with joy and surprise.
Clutching his Oscar, Jones says beaming: “I just want to ask you a question, if an actor’s nightmare is being on stage buck naked and not knowing his lines, what the heck do you call this? I’ve been on stage, a great audience and thank you. I had my clothes on. I knew my words and then out from the wings steps Sir Ben Kingsley and he hands me an Oscar. Frankly, what else would you call this but an actor’s wet dream!”

continuted hxh thotz
we watched more so i continue my ramblings
so we finished the trick tower stuff and started on the stuff on the island where theyre all hunting each other....wow finally some hunting in hunter x hunter
can i just say....fuck hisoka i hate that guyyyy oh my goddddd hes the worst. i just feel incandescent rage whenever hes on screen vhbjdshfjhbsd smarmy horny clown bitch. looooord. he invokes a similar emotion to part 1 dio tbh....like i lose my domestication when i see both those bitches
oh god that part where hisoka had just spent like hours de-hornifying himself or w/e and he looks all crusty and dehydrated and then he spots that old guy who looks kinda ghibli and he just goes AFTER ghibli man....like hisoka literally had one of those wack ass super detailed faces and just started screaming and running at that guy...like man i wouldve died instantly on the spot. jesus
gon remains best best perfect baby boy. every time he does something so cute and pure that my heart starts palpating, i get even more nervous for the shit hes gonna go thru someday
gon and killua are literally soooo precious theyre just two lil boys!!! two lads!!! lad boys! augh i love how much theyre vibing all the time...like on the boat to the island when theyre like refusing to tell each other who their target is and then they both start laughing and then show each other....so precious
honestly im really enjoying how they dont really have a rivalry (yet?) - theyre not like ‘yes we are friends but we’re also COMPETING! so we cant be That nice to each other bc that wouldnt be fair! or w/e you know that typical shounen stuff. i only enjoy that sometimes and im glad its not a thing rn, and if it does become like that later i probs wont mind bc i feel like itd be done well
so ruth and i caught on to the fact that that weird guy with the pins stuck all over himself was illuminati or w/e his name is (illumi? illumini? i forget already) but HOLY FUCK we both thought he was wearing a mask....god i wish that were the case, that face transformation shit was the WORST. sir why can you do that
also when hisoka just watched this and was like ‘i always like seeing you do that’ or whatever god gross nasty i hate them
my take on the little we’ve seen of hisoka and illumitations relationship: theyre like the catty mean girls-types but Super Fucking Weird. idk if theyre gay togther (probably) but theyd be the epitome of a ‘is this allowed? [gestures at All That]’ couple. i had more thoughts on them but i forgt
i find it funny that they havent shown killua like at all during this island hunting thing hvbhsdhfbjdk he probably has like 10 randos badges already. i feel like he would give gon a badge or 2 if gon needed them but that doesnt seem to be the case
when hisoka spotted leorio and kurapika and went after them i was like [guy yelling NOOOOOOOOOOO meme] freal
thank goodness kurapika could recognize that they would Fucking Die trying to fight hisoka, and bargained w/him instead. also seeing the flashback of leorio trying to fight hisoka was so funny. my man WHAT! were you thinking
this is probably the stage that tonpa is getting out on and can i just say thank god i hate that guy. good riddance
that sniper lady looked cool and im bummed illuminty took her out offscreen :( i also thought the black guy with the beehive stick thing was gonna do more but guess not
i find it funny that so many characters have these loud character designs but end up not having a lot of screentime...i feel like ive been conditioned by one piece to see an eye-catching character and mentally prepare to see a wholeass backstory lol
also. illunikn is clearly a huge freak which is probably why hisoka is willing to work w/him, but his design is weirdly cute sometimes (when hes not doing absolutely freaky shit, which....admittedly isnt often)
like the part where he transforms into his True Cat Man Form and then, without changing expression, digs a giant hole with his bare hands (with the body language of a feral person) and then gets into it to nap.....like.....bro.
also ik illiminini is killuas brother (i think brother?) and wow that family has some strong Cat genes
i find it interesting that hisoka has been working with illiimini this whole time, hisoka strikes me as a solo type of guy who would be all like ‘teamwork is beneath me’ and only have minions (a la dio, espec p1 dio) but he seems to have a fairly even relationship w/illuimian which is wild. i rlly wonder if thatll last or if hisoka is gonna like, murder/abandon ilubimi later bc he ‘gets in hisokas way’ or st
i like that kurapika and leorio teamed up....married
i generally really like how the relationships between the main characters are handled, its sweet how theyre just like....generally nice to each other and stuff lol
also oh my god i forgot that last time i hadnt seen the end of trick tower i need to talk abt that
KILLUA MY BOY OH MY GOD....ive been waiting for this ngl. ily smug murderous catboy
i love so much how killua casually kills this ~*~scary guy~*~ and everyones like :0 but gon is just like yep thats killua! hes from a family of assassins! like the way he says it so casually and kinda cheery aw i love him. he doesnt even care that killua can murder people in 2 seconds flat, he thinks killua is AWESOME
and oh my god i love how hard killua is trying like, all the time. he is trying his HARDEST to be AS COOL AS POSSIBLE for gon and thats adorable. its working too gon clearly thinks killua is SUPER cool
the eternally hilarious part where kurapika asked what killuas secret tactic are re: ripping that guys heart out, and killua is just like ‘uh i just ripped it out. yknow...as one does..’ and kurapika is like wow im glad this murder catboy is on our side..
the psychology stuff in the trick tower was interesting as hell (catch me brushing off my psych minor like, oh yeah i know abt this stuff lol)...i like the stuff abt leorio getting discouraged/disgruntled when the majority ended up being against him a lot bc thats true!! thats how it works!! it leads to learned helplessness and stuff like that...also that animation of kurapika and leorio playing cards to explain the tough candle choice was sooo cute
i really loved the solution to the final majority rule things....ingeniously following the rules while still managing to circumvent them in ways...love it
also gon is so perfect have i mentioned that already
im so curious whos gonna pass the hunter exam, i legit have no idea and i would find it so funny if gon becomes a hunter in the first goddamn arc hjhbdfhsdjbgk as ruth said, itd kinda be like luffy becoming pirate king in like chapter 70
i mean tbf if i had to guess id say gon passes, simply bc i cant see the story taking the time to have him do the hunter exam again in a year. also his motivation is to become a hunter in order to see what its all about bc of his dad - not JUST to become a hunter
gons fishing rod is so cute. perfect item for a perfect boy
his training was adorable. hes a smart lad! formidable baby
the blooderflies were so cool and OH MY GOD how could i forget the part where gon had two blooderflies with little leashes on and had the leashes tied to one of his fingers....OOOUGHHHHGBSJFHSJBFUHEJKSDD bro my heart literally palpated like it does when my cat does something rlly cute, gon is seriously That cute and pure and good
every time hisoka is anywhere near gon i just wanna call the FBI on that clowns ass oh y god. pls leave ladboy alone....
anyways i love the main characters (HISOKA DONT INTERACT) and i cant wait to see what happens next. i might have more thoughts but coherency is not one of my strengths so bye

Bart Chat 10/1/19 Greetings all,   Docufest is coming and last week in Bart Chat I went over the Thursday and Friday night programs. Today I will go over the rest of the festival. If you missed last week here is the summary-- link here. We begin Saturday morning at noon with  White Right: Meeting the Enemy, where Emmy award-winning Muslim filmmaker, Deeyah Khan, interviews Leaders of US Neo-Nazis and white supremacists. She bluntly asks them why they hate her and the results are surprising and powerful. After that, perhaps the craziest film in the lot is Mr. Toilet: The Words No.2 Man about Jack Sim who has dedicated his life to global sanitation in the form of getting the third world to buy toilets. This film is a memorable, fun and insightful journey into the life of this endearing character who goes to India and China from his World Toilet Organization to spread the word.  Then at 3:00 PM, we are excited to show Ernie and Joe, a film I have been excited about for a long time.  We keep hearing about mental health as it relates to gun violence, but often police escalate violence with the mentally ill. The City of San Antonio’s Police department started a unit to approach these mental health issues differently. We get to know officers Ernie and Joe and see how they interact with citizens to descalate violence. Dallas has a unit of their own and we hope to have a representative at the screening. Then, we have our one and only documentary short compilations include, Mr. Zoot Suit and a documentary called Lilly, about a woman who escaped the Nazis in Vienna, was a pioneer of the Golden Age of Comics and is a great storyteller. There are many others including a film called, A Film Crew Censors Itself.   After that, we have Karen Kramer’s, Renegade Voices, a look at political activism on the streets of New York now and in the ’60s, following poet and folk musicians who follow in the footsteps of Dylan and Ginsberg who use their guitars and words to bring about change. (Great archival footage and great characters.)   Ahhhh, we end Saturday evening with an evening with the great Chuck Workman. For those who were at last year’s Docufest, you might remember his short film called Moments in Truth, which is a short history of documentary film. If you have seen montages on The Oscars that were inspiring and blew your mind, it was created by Chuck Workman. Chuck is the master of montage: he finds the soul of his subject, matches the soundtrack to drive it and helps us feel these genre or filmmakers or film movements. We will be showing four of his montages, the one about documentaries that I mentioned, one about tubings bunny named Bug, one about Politics in Film and his Oscar award-winning Precise Images. AND THEN, we are showing his film about Andy Warhol called Superstar: The Life and Time of Andy Warhol.  This is an evening NOT TO BE MISSED. On Sunday, we start the day with Alternative Facts: The Lives of Executive Order 9066. It’s about the WW2 incarceration of Japanese Americans living here in the United States.  This is a story I have heard about, but only briefly. Next, we have Letter to the Editor, a new film by Alan Berliner.  I have been a big fan of his since 1996. His films Nobody’s Business, The Sweetest Sound, Wide Awake, and  First Cousin Once Removed is intricately crafted portraits of his family and of himself. Berliner is a hoarder of images, sound, and video and he has a way of putting them together, just as brilliantly as Chuck Workman, but in a different way. Any chance to see a Berliner film is a treat.  This is followed by Citizen Blue, a film about a great filmmaker who very few people know about that will no doubt inspire. James Blue is most known for making The March, a film about the Civil Rights demonstration on Washington. If you have seen footage of this event, it is probably from this film, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. He made inspiring narrative films and then came to Texas to start The Rice Media Center and The Southwest Alternative Media Project, known as SWAMP.  Both organizations are still in effect in Houston and do similar work to VideoFest. After this, we have Beyond the Bolex. If you have never heard of the Bolex, it is a small, spring-wound 16MM camera that was the staple of independent and experimental filmmakers in the ’60s and 70’s and heck, people still use them.  When Alyssa  Bolex was in film school, she discovered that her great-grandfather was the inventor of the Bolex, so she goes on a hunt to discover what happened in his life from Russia to Switzerland, how he finally landed in the USA, invented the Bolex and what happened after that. In between, we hear from and see work from important filmmakers who used the Bolex and how it influenced their work. (There is even a sequence with Barbra Hammer---see above )  Later on Sunday, we are showing After Munich. In the 1972 Olympics in Munich, the Black September moment updated 11 Israeli hostages which the world watched live on TV. In this powerful documentary, we hear from four women, an athlete, a widow, and two undercover agents. We wrap up docufest with Tattoo Uprising by Dallas renaissance man, Alan Govenar.   This film is playing to large crowds right now in New York and elsewhere and we finally get to screen it here in Dallas. Alan started on his film journey with Stony Knows How about a crusty tattoo artist in 1980. (It is great to see a young Govenar). In the film,  we get to meet the great Tatoo Artist Ed Hardy, the aforementioned Stony St. Clair, Cynthia  Witkin, and Calamity Jane. But perhaps the best moments in the film is when filmmaker Les Blank and Werner Hertzog compare tattoos. Also this week, we have a great episode of Frame of Mind. To go along with DocuFest we have a selection of Texas short films. Paul Steckler who is a great documentary filmmaker and professor at UT in Austin made this compelling short about Molly and Ann, that would be Molly Ivins and Ann Richards--Molly the journalist/columnist, who made covering the Texas fun and insightful and Ann Richards our former governor. Then Rania Elmalky’s 489 Day presents Mohamed Soltan’s life through animation  Unbound is about human trafficking and Kolache, Texas is about the famous Czech Stop in the town of West, Texas. I know you have passed it on I35 and wanted to stop in, and after seeing this, you definitely will need to experience the pastries there. Reel Texas: Real Characters at 10:00 PM, Thursday on KERA.   And that is it. So much to see in four days Truth being told in 30 frames a second in 4 days in Dallas, Texas--be there! If any of you want more info on any of these films,  email me at [email protected].  Bart Weiss Artistic Director Dallas VideoFest

Three reasons: tarot cards are older than anyone realizes. So you’re going to hear about how old Tarot possibly really is.
Some pretty solid evidence provided from several different angles, including an Egyptian mummy, which is possibly about 2700 years old – reason number one. Tarot cards are attached to the wrappings of an ancient Egyptian mummy dating from maybe 700 or so BC in Poland at the excellent Archaeological Museum in Poznan near the city square.
This Egyptian mummy is with what can only be described as two tarot cards lying on top.. Are they two other tarot cards protecting the Mummy’s spirit? Are they keeping the mummy dead?
She dates from the 8th to the 4th century BC, so between the site and persian periods. The top two images are basically what a tarot enthusiast would recognize immediately as the tower, which means death and change in our tarot cards today tower is the worst card. It means death, but it means it even more strongly than the actual death card, because it seems to be the picture of a tomb.
If you look at it literally, it is almost like pre-christian image, imagery that the Virgin that the woman, pointing up at the mansions in heaven the woman might be the Empress or the priestess tarot card reason number two, the bimbo and tablet. Firstly, the been buying tablet is an artifact you may or may not have heard of it is said to be Egyptian izing rather than pure Egyptian, probably Roman, made in the 1st century AD.
That’s the official idea of what this thing is: perhaps made in Egypt. Now it is cast on a type of what is called Corinthian bronze. This is an hour an alloy used in antiquity between and it’s it’s, sir.
It’S a mixture of copper, gold and silver, and then they mix it with a metal. That’s been dunked in an organic acid to create a black patina and voila Corinthian bronze. Now with an unknown history, the tablet was purchased by certain Cardinal Bembo of Rome. He was a renaissance scholar and I think he resembled John D in appearance. He held the post of official historian of the Republic of Venice and was a member of the Knights of st John of Jerusalem, like the Templars before them, these men dealt in precious antiquities in 1547.
The tablet was mysteriously passed to Machiavelli, like aristocratic rulers of the tiny but wealthy Italian state of Mantua at been Beau’s death. It remained in their collection until seized by the troops of ferdinand ii, the Habsburg king of Germany. In fact, I have a copy of this on my wall. Let’S take a closer look. I think this is the secret of Tarot.

This is the heart of terror. Do you notice how this can be divided up into lots of different cards, and some people say well, this is where terror comes from, but thing is this is ancient Egypt. This is seems to be an ancient Egyptian artifact and this appeared in the 1600s. I think it’s from Roman times the problem is, apparently the Egyptian letters are just gobbledygook. No one has been able to interpret them.
No one knows what it’s all about in this video we’re gonna have a look at possibly how far back it goes now. People say it can’t be terror, it’s too old, its Roman and others say well, Tarot is very old and the counter-argument is no Tarot was invented in Italy in the 1400s. Now it looks to me like a a sheet of uncut tarot cards, but it isn’t. I think, it’s more like a hierarchy of the important cards, a key. Let me explain: Tarot people might not be aware of this, but in chipton hieroglyphs you read into the direction of that.
The faces are pointing that’s the direction you read hieroglyphs, therefore, these gods, which point in different directions. I think that’s that’s a clue to what’s going on here and that would show you possibly which cards outweigh the other cards in this way it could be a list of odds like a like a poker like like a like in a game of poker. It’S like hierarchy, a hierarchy of cards, that’s how I would read it, but we don’t know how its read now. Is it terror? I think yes and this this smashes any of everything in the official history of terror.
So if you look up Tarot anywhere, you will, but you will you’ll, rarely see the mention of the Bembo tablet. Now, let’s have a look Osiris down there. The death card obviously note he is also in a tower two of the worst modern cards in one. Now. Look at the goddess in the middle that could be the Empress of the world.
The Empress s she is known. Several of the cards have a cartouche in the upper right or the upper left. Now that reminds me of the full card, where there is a butterfly in this position. In fact, I believe the butterfly in the full card being four wings, comes from the B in hieroglyphics making the fool the king of the terror, the fall of the universe. The tragicomic outcome that some say underlies all events.
Now, of course, this hieroglyph means king. Now there are animals in the cards. We also see cups, Pentacles stays just like in the real terror, but we do not see suits of numbers which would make this suitable as playing cards. Therefore, these are not tarot cards for playing, but some kind of instruction manual for the sacred cards reason number three: the symbolism in Tarot goes back to very ancient mythology. Now, in various old Tarot’s, the Falls leg is being bitten by a cat or another animal, and I’ve noticed it’s often the thigh that’s being bitten:
Of course, who has the wounded thigh? Well, let’s shows up in grey legends. The wounded king guardian of the Holy Grail he’s also called the Fisher King, and there is something wrong with the wounded King because he can’t stand up. He can only fish from a small pool nearby. Now the angle of the Falls Carey pack to me looks like a fishing rod, so I bet there was another forgotten deck in which in which this possibly was a fishing rod.
Now, tarot cards evolved from playing cards. Supposedly playing cards have been used in Italy since the late 14th century. It is known they actually arrived from Egypt in the 13 70s tarot cards were supposedly invented in North Italy in subsequent decades. From what I’ve been able to ascertain, Tarot was simply a fancier version of regular playing cards. Decks like the Venetian Tripoli cards, for instance, which only had 36 cards or the trench on deck which had 40 or 50 now, it must be said that mystics who study terror have an alternate history and they tell us that the Tarot is an ancient Egyptian book.
This idea is rejected by Wikipedia, but playing cards obviously do come from Egypt in the official history, not tarot cards, and we, but we know tarot cards – are a favorite of gypsies who are also associated with Egypt. The problem is very few: Egyptian playing cards survive, so we can’t really tell but look, for instance, at these surviving mammal cards from Turkey, the seven of cups, the nine of coins, it’s more terror alike, than the regular playing cards of Europe. So this alone proves that terror does come from somewhere in North Africa. Now, just as today, all our Tarot is based on the 1910s reyda wait back in the olden days. We had various terrors and they all seemed to have been based in the 19th century.
The 18th century on the Marseille Tarot, which was a pretty standard deck back then now before this Tarot before this Tarot, is different. Again, I want to show I want you to have a look at this fool from the oldest Italian terror. We have it’s. The oldest Tarot we have The mysterious the Conte Sforza pack now he is basically an ancient god called Dagda. This is a you know in ancient Irish mythology, the dugs that carries a huge club which, in one sweep, can kill nine men.
Now that club has, in rate of weight under Victorian influence, somehow morphed into a darn carry pack now it’s interesting that the Kerner burst giant in England is some kind of original fool or one of them. He is known in Irish mythology as dag dag. There is the foolish god similar to Cyclops he’s one I’d like the one-eyed giant buffoon in the Odyssey dagger can sweep away nine men with one blow of his club, and you will notice that the club is knotted. I think each not corresponding to to a club. You can take out one man with each knot now there is another thing all the fools carry two starves, basically stuff in each hand.
What do we know this from so here’s somehow like the staff, god of Tiahuanaco or the slopes of southern England or or everywhere else he is found a symbol of the ancient traveler ancient God confirmed, I would say so. The ruler of the Tarot is is the staff God of the ancient world, and if we look into the ancient Egyptian, the BEM Botero, they are all carrying starves anyway in the old Vacanti Sforza pack. Instead of presenting the fall like a like a Roman Priapus with a big penis, he never dies does look like Roman Priapus and they show him partly undressed. Now these are ancient gods and therefore the Tarot is, I can say at least based on this from a chat Rome this to me. This confirms it now, since the Tarot does seem to go back 200 times.
What is the conclusion? Is there some lost knowledge here? Now it’s a popular idea in the in the world that the cards represent the expansion of the universe. So you start from a foolish set of laws and the universe exceeds from number one from the first card from the fall. It’s foolish laws that occur at some creation event and then the law continues to manifest in in the tragicomic actions of an intelligent universe.
I like that explanation, is that what the ancients were trying to tell us is represented by the tarot deck. Also, the force dicks imply a 4-fold universe, swords cups, Pentacles staves, the four corners of the world in ancient mythology, but also in space and time good and evil, with swords & Pentacles as evil and the other two good guys.

Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 1948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “”Mr Television”” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. ❍❍❍ Formats and Genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically rA nagy visszatérőkined static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intendevd five-season run.[citvatio””&n needed] In 2007, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2007, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “”I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. ❍❍❍ Thank’s For All And Happy Watching❍❍❍ Find all the movies that you can stream online, including those that were screened this week. Definition and Definition of Film / Movie While the players who play a role in the film are referred to as actors (men) or actresses (women). There is also the term extras that are used as supporting characters with few roles in the film. This is different from the main actors who have bigger and more roles. Being an actor and an actress must be demanded to have good acting talent, which is in accordance with the theme of the film he is starring in. In certain scenes, the actor’s role can be replaced by a stuntman or a stuntman. The existence of a stuntman is important to replace the actors doing scenes that are difficult and extreme, which are usually found in action action films. There are many other popular genre films, ranging from action films, horror films, comedy films, romantic films, fantasy films, thriller films, drama films, science fiction films, crime films, documentaries and others. That’s a little information about the definition of film or movie. The information was quoted from various sources and references. Hope it can be useful.
❍❍❍ TV FILM ❍❍❍ The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 1930s. Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 2020 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war.
Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end.

Bernese Mountain Dog
Bernese Mountain Dogs, or also called Berners, are large-sized dogs initially used as an all-around farm dog. They make excellent watchdogs on farms, and their sturdy build is surely something farmers can rely on.
They have thick, long, and silky coats that protect them from cold weather conditions in Switzerland. It also comes in three colors, jet black, white, and rust, with distinctive markings on their coat and face that will immediately allow you to recognize them. Their eyes scream with intelligence that gives that look of nobility in them.

Bernese Mountain Dog Ratings

Bernese Mountain Dog History
Bernese Mountain Dogs are believed to have been working on the farmlands of Switzerland for more than two centuries. They are one of the four mountain-dog breeds in the Bern Canton, which originated from crossbreeding farm dogs from the Alps and the Molosser.
Bernese Mountain Dogs have spent their time driving cattle and guarding farmlands. But after a long day of work, they become the farmers’ companions. They are also exceptionally known for their strength and ability to pull an object 10x their weight.
They were really useful in ranching and farming. However, despite this, their number still started to decline in the late 1800s. By 1899, some Swiss farmers decided to preserve the native breeds, and the dog club Berna was founded.
When 1902 came, the same dog club sponsored a show to introduce the Swiss mountain breeds, and in 1904, the dogs were finally recognized as the Bernese Mountain Dogs.
After World War I, they finally brought the first Bernese Mountain Dog to the United States. And it was only in 1937 when the American Kennel Club finally recognized the dog as a breed.
Now, Bernese Mountains Dogs remain to be gentle family companions. Their noble stature and tricolor coat is extremely popular, giving them the 22nd ranking in the most popular dog breed in the US.
Bernese Mountain Dog Temperament
Bernese Mountain Dogs are good-natured, calm, and strong. But they are also affectionate, intelligent, and alert. Basically, they are even-tempered dogs.
Though a working dog, Bernese doesn’t need a lot of exercise. There will be days when he’ll laze around and wouldn’t care if you do something for the day or not.
If you’re living in a hot country, the Bernese may struggle with the climate. Their thick coat is designed to warm them up on cold weather conditions, and they won’t be able to handle too much heat. They will be excellent dogs in snowy areas, and you can even ask them to pull you on a sled as they have incredible strength.
The Bernese Mountain Dog makes an excellent family dog, and they are very gentle with children. However, there are times where they might only be attached to one person. They will also make excellent dogs even if you’re a first-time owner, as long as you provide them with their needs.
They can also get very protective of their family, but they are rarely aggressive. They can also be extremely shy when it comes to strangers or other animals. But there are also a few Bernese that tend to become aggressive with male dogs.
Early socialization is needed to prevent unlikeable behaviors. Let him interact with new people, new animal friends, new sights, and new surroundings daily. This is extremely important while he’s a pup.
Obedience training is also something that you can do. This way, he’ll be able to maintain his good nature. Of course, don’t forget to give him praise and always acknowledge an excellent job.
Bernese Mountain Dog Care Requirements
Nutrition: The most important thing to remember when feeding a Bernese Mountain Dog is to provide a well-balanced diet. This must contain high-quality ingredients so he can get all the nutrients he needs. A Bernese Mountain Dog Diet should comprise the following: Low Protein Level (18-26%) and Moderate Fat (16%). Too much fat and protein will not be great on your Bernese, especially if he’s not the active type. You can add fresh foods as well, such as yogurt, cooked or raw meat, fish, eggs, fruits, and vegetables. You can also add a few supplements to supply his other nutritional needs, such as vitamins and b-complex. Watch out for any food allergies too. You can consult a vet to ask for more guidance regarding the food intake of your Bernese Mountain Dog. The calorie intake would usually depend on his activities and age, so it varies from one dog to another.
Grooming: The Bernese Mountain Dog has a thick, shiny, long coat that sheds a lot. Shedding is even more frequent during the shedding season. To minimize this problem, weekly brushing, two to three times, is highly recommended. You can do it daily if it’s shedding season. This will help remove loose hair, and of course, decrease your problems of having to clean up your furniture. As you brush the hair, make sure to get rid of tangles too. Bernese Mountain Dogs also don’t need a lot of baths, mainly because their coat easily sheds off the dirt. Plus, since they mostly live in a cold climate, they rarely get dirty from mud or dust. Remember to trim the coat if it’s too long, but it’s best if you let the experts do it. Trim the nails also if it’s too long as this can be painful for your dog.
Exercise: Bernese dogs don’t need a heavy exercise, but to keep them happy and healthy, at least 30 minutes of walking will do. Yes, they enjoy lazing around with your inside the house all day, but they also enjoy outdoor activities, so you should give him that. If you love to travel, take him camping, hiking, or backpacking with you. You can also let him join some canine sports where he can showcase his herding, obedience, agility, and tracking skills.
Health: Bernese Mountains Dogs are sadly one of the dog breeds with the shortest lifespan. Knowing about the health problems which they are prone to will surely help you as an owner prevent them, and perhaps prolong his life more. Minor diseases they are prone to are cataract, subaortic stenosis (SAS), entropion, and ectropion, while the serious ones are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion, and cancer. Remember to keep him in cold areas because too much heat will lead to heatstroke. There are screening tests that can be cone for early detection of some diseases. However, for some, you would need to do extra observation and take him immediately to a vet if you notice some symptoms.
Lifespan: The life expectancy of Bernese Mountain Dogs is 7-10 years.

Types of Wildlife to Spot During an Antarctica Cruise – I am Aileen
Due to the cold and harsh environment in Antarctica, it’s expected that it is NOT a hospitable place for ‘life‘ to survive in. In fact, as 98% of the continent remains covered in ice, things get extremely grim in the winter with temperatures that are able to fall down to -70°C  (it even reached -94.7°C back in 2010 and -89.2 in 1983) — and that comes together with 24 hours of darkness too. Nevertheless, the good news is that the tip of the continent (which is called as the Antarctic Peninsula) as well as the surrounding sub-Antarctic islands are more hospitable; so, they become ideal spots for witnessing some of the amazing Antarctic animals!
TRIVIA: Antarctic life forms are typically called as ‘extremophiles’ given that they can thrive in physically extreme habitats that would typically be detrimental to most life on Earth.
This term though is usually only used for microbes but penguins are sometimes referred to as such given that they can live in this place in which most other normal animals cannot.
With that said, if you are ever a part of an Antarctica expedition, below are some of the incredible Antarctic animals that you can see during your cruise through the surrounding islands and the Peninsula itself! .

» Penguins (Birds) «
Naturally, penguins are the first type of animals that people think of when Antarctica comes to mind. (And in case you’re confused — nope, there are no polar bears here in the south, those are found way up north!)
Apart from the various other birds that one can find in the region (such as skuas, albatrosses, snowy sheathbills, geese, etc. which you can see nesting along the shores of Antarctica in the summer or that you could witness from your ship as you make your way into the continent), I’ll rather be focusing on the penguins for this section.
So, to date, there are 17 species of penguins in the world but only 7 of them live on and around Antarctica:
Four (4) live and nest in and around the Antarctic continent: Adélie, Emperor, Chinstrap, and Gentoo
The first 2 are found way further in the icy continent and the rest prefer to be at the northern tip
Three (3) breed in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands: King, Macaroni and Rockhopper .
#1 – Adélie Adélie penguins are commonly found along the coast of Antarctica and you can easily identify them by their small height (around 18 to 28 inches), the white ring surrounding their eyes, and the feathers at the base of their bill. As one of the Antarctic animals, they mostly feed on sea creatures such as krill, little fishes and the occasional squid. If you come around early to mid-December, you can witness baby Adélies because they are usually born around that time.
Adelie Penguins from Shutterstock.com Where to find them: Inside the Antarctica continent, Antarctic Islands (e.g. Half Moon Island) and sub-Antarctic islands
TRIVIA: There’s a reason behind the cute walk or waddling of penguins. Aside from the fact that it’s the only way they can move given their short legs, it’s also a way for them to save and conserve energy. You can think of their motion as an inverted pendulum wherein swinging back and forth makes them continue to move more efficiently.
.
#2 – Chinstrap It’s clear to see they’re called this way, after all, chinstrap penguins have distinctive black feathers that run under their chin which makes them look like they have a teeny tiny helmet, right?
As for the chinstrap penguins’ chicks, they are typically born between late February and early March; so if you come sometime before those months, you can possibly see them incubating their eggs (they often lay two eggs).
Where to find them: Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic Islands and sub-Antarctic islands
Chinstrap penguins typically have two chicks per mating season, and they are born between late February and early March.
TRIVIA: The breeding practices of chinstrap penguins are quite dramatic. Males would race to find the very best nests, and then wait for their mates to arrive. If a male can’t find a nest to his liking, he may even force couples out of the nest that he has chosen (talk about forceful!) But once he has a nest, he will give his mate 5 days to show up— if she won’t, he’ll be moving on. Though, if his original mate catches him with another lady, these female penguins will fight over his affections!
.
#3 – Emperor Emperor penguins are the most southerly of the Antarctic animals and they are also the largest, bulkiest, and heaviest of all penguin species — given that they can stand from 43 to 51 inches and weigh from 22 to 45 kilos. Apart from their height, you can easily identify emperor penguins from their pale yellow breast and bright yellow and orange patches near their ears (this is apart from the typical ‘penguin tuxedo’ look).
And of course,  the emperor penguins’ chicks who have silver grey down (or layer of fine feathers) are easy to spot too. If I say so myself, they are the most adorable baby penguins of all!
Emperor Penguins from Shutterstock.com Where to find them: They can be quite difficult to find as they’re found further in the Antarctic continent (e.g. Snow Hill Island, Dion Islands). However, there have been times where they are spotted in the Antarctic Peninsula or even in South Georgia.
TRIVIA: Emperor penguins are the only penguin species that breeds during the harsh Antarctic winter. After laying a single egg, the female returns to the sea to feed and replenish her energy while the male incubates it. If you’ve watched documentaries of this before, you would know how they have excellent camaraderie when all the males huddle together in the winter for warmth while taking turns standing outside of the said huddle.
.
#4 – Gentoo Gentoo penguins are the 3rd largest penguin species; yet, they’re still fairly small. With a height that can span from 20 to 35 inches, you can recognize them instantly from the wide white stripe across the top of their head as well as their bright red orange bill.
Baby gentoo penguins are usually hatched in October; so, since Antarctic cruise expeditions start in November, you won’t be able to see them with their eggs but of course you can see the baby chicks waddling about since it takes them 3 months before they can become independent.
Where to find them: Falkland Islands, sub-Antarctic islands, and Antarctic Peninsula (e.g. Cuverville Island)
TRIVIA: The penguins may be slow on land but they’re fast in the water! Most penguins swim underwater at around 6 to 11 kilometers per hour (kph), but the fastest penguin — the gentoo — can reach up to 35 kph. Imagine that!
.
#5 – King King penguins are the 2nd largest of the penguin species and I have come to witness almost a MILLION of them when I landed in South Georgia‘s St. Andrews Bay —it was phenomenal!
Their look is similar to that of the emperor penguins with slight differences on the cheek or ear patches. One could even say that unlike the emperor penguins who have a jet black color, king penguins rather have dark grey. When it comes to baby chicks though, king penguins don a brown fluffy fur. They shed this for months through a process called moulting until they finally achieve the ‘signature look’ of adult king penguins. (NOTE: When early explorers first saw the baby king penguins, they thought they were an entirely different animal!)
King Penguins from Shutterstock.com
Wanna see almost a MILLION of them? Read about my experience in South Georgia for this!
Where to find them: Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and sub-Antarctic islands
TRIVIA: King penguins have a long breeding timeframe that lasts for about 14 months. Meanwhile, their diet rely on small fish (e.g. lanternfish) and squid. They rely less on krill and other crustaceans which is what other penguins mostly feed on.
.
#6 – Macaroni Macaroni penguins may be small but they are flashy given their big orange bills and bright and spiky orange eyebrows (which are called as ‘crests’). Crests are actually common in all penguin species but they’re in a lighter color and not as predominant as that of the macaroni penguins.
When I first saw this kind of penguin, I immediately remembered Lovelace of Happy Feet!
Macaroni Penguins from Shutterstock.com Where to find them: Sub-Antarctic islands (e.g. South Georgia, Heard Island)
TRIVIA: Penguins seem to look like they’re wearing tuxedos, right? Well, this is helpful for camouflaging them while out hunting in the waters (against their predators like the leopard seals).
.
#7 – Rockhopper If macaroni penguins are flashy, rockhopper penguins are too — BUT, in a more subdued way since their crests or eyebrow markings are less striking but are still spiky and bright yellow that extend all the way to the crown of their heads.
As for their name, this came about because they typically hop around their rocky environment. You won’t find them in Antarctica itself but they are found in the northern Antarctic islands.
Where to find them: Falkland Islands and sub-Antarctic islands .
BONUS: Magellanic These are named after the famous Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, who first spotted them in 1520. You won’t find these cute penguins in Antarctica as they’re mainly a South American penguin as they breed in coastal Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands — however, since your Antarctica trip may stop by the Falkland Islands, they’re worth mentioning here!
.
» Whales «
In the Antarctic summer, there are various types of whales who go around to feed on the nutrient-rich waters and there are about 15 whale species that can be found there. Sure enough, spotting them from your ship or from a zodiac boat is one of the most exciting experiences you can have in an Antarctic expedition!
Some of the types of whales that you can see (if you’re lucky) are:
Sperm whales: the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator that mainly feed on squid (medium-sized ones, even giant squid, colossal squid), octopus, and fish. Fun trivia: they have the largest brain of any animal on Earth and can live for more than 60 years.
Orcas or Killer whales: they’re technically NOT a part of the whale species but rather belong to the oceanic dolphin family. They have a diverse diet: some feed only on fish while others will hunt seals and dolphins. It’s helpful to note that other than the Antarctic regions, they’re found in a lot of other places like the tropical seas and the Arctic regions.
Fin or finback whales: they are the 2nd-largest mammalian on Earth after the blue whale, and with their long and slender bodies, they’re a sight to be seen in the waters!
Humpback whales: known for frequent breaching (or coming to the water’s surface to breathe) as well as doing other amazing surface behaviors, humpback whales surely are popular with whale watchers!
Blue whales: the largest animals ever known to exist that can grow as long as 100 feet and weigh more than 120 tons! They used to be abundant on all oceans (numbering at about 239,000) until the 20th century when they were hunted almost to extinction. As of 2002, it is estimated that there are approximately 5,000 to 12,000 of them worldwide.
…and others: you can spot minke, sei, southern bottlenose whales, etc.
Humpback Whale from Shutterstock.com During my Antarctica expedition, I was able to see fin, humpback and killer whales!
TRIVIA: You need NOT to be afraid of these gentle Antarctic animals. Even if they are aggressive toward their prey, they don’t really attack humans. Sure, you may have heard of killer whales who attack their trainers but that’s because they have been raised in captivity.
Anyhow, many of these Antarctic whales have been hunted in the past resulting to endangered status on some of the species. This is as evidenced by some of the whaling stations that you will pass by during your cruise; nowadays though, there are international regulations on these whaling activities and the entire ocean surrounding Antarctica is regarded as a whale sanctuary.
.
» Seals «
In Antarctica, there will be 4 types of seals that you will likely find, namely:
Elephant seals: they are the largest Antarctic animals and the ones found here in the southerly part of the world are bigger than the elephant seals that you will find in the north (such as in USA, Canada, etc.). Truth be told, elephant seals can be as heavy as 3,000kg!!! Also, as what you might be thinking, they acquired their name due to their snout that looks like an elephant’s trunk. (Diet: fish and squid).
Leopard seals: the infamous spotted predators of the adorable penguins (and even their fellow seals), fur seals are the 2nd largest species of the Antarctic seals. They’re also known to be fierce in nature to just about anyone and although they don’t attack humans often, it’s advisable to keep a distance from them. During my expedition, we spotted some of them in the waters from our ship but they weren’t so visible.
Weddell seals: these seals gather around cracks in the ice and are also often seen lying on their sides when on land. They’re very docile so they’re said to be the most approachable and the best-studied of the Antarctic seals. In terms of appearance, they’re often compared to cats due to their somewhat similar facades, not to mention that their upturned mouths make them look like they’re smiling. (Diet: fish, krill, squid, prawns and crustaceans.)
Crabeater seals: contrary to what you might think, these seals don’t eat crabs (they actually mainly eat Antarctic krill). You can quickly identify them in the ice due to their pale color — that is if you’re lucky to spot one as they’re customarily found on free-floating icea from the Antarctic coast. Nevertheless, your chances are high since they’re the most abundant seal species in the world.
Around the Antarctic waters though, and mostly in South Georgia Island, you will see the Antarctic fur seal which is a less aggressive seal than the leopard seal. When we landed in South Georgia we had to take caution of “attacking” fur seals who sporadically do so due to concerns that we’re out steal their girls or harem — nope, I’m not kidding! Competition is fierce for space and females that’s why they may even charge at penguins. Rest assured, it’s safe since they only run after you if they feel like it and then give up easily if you either make noise or point a stick towards them (it makes them stop running for some reason).
Weddell Seals from Shutterstock.com
TRIVIA: Being as they are, seals are actually slow predators and they hunt by waiting in places where prey might appear. For example, leopard seals usually patrol in the edges of the ice in the water and they lie there waiting for any penguins who might enter the ocean.
Moreover, much like the whales, seals also used to be hunted heavily for their skin and oil. Now that they’re protected, their numbers have grown to millions!

As Grand Canyon National Park turns 100, one man hikes the entire length to save it
https://embed-prod.vemba.io/vemba-embed.js
Pete McBride is worried about the Grand Canyon, so he decided to hike it — all of it.
A few years ago, the adventure filmmaker, photographer and writer filmed the path of the Colorado River and was amazed to see that the river doesn’t reach the ocean anymore.
The river “flooded the sea for six million years, and it stopped two decades ago,” says McBride, who has traveled to 75 countries for a host of publications and projects over 20 years.
The trip “made me shift my focus, so now I do a lot of photography around conservation, around fresh water and around public lands.”
Having hiked Mount Everest and documented nature in Antarctica, he didn’t think the Grand Canyon needed his images to survive.
“I figured the Grand Canyon was one of the most protected pieces of landscape on the planet, so it didn’t require another photographer to go photograph there.”
Learning about current threats to the canyon changed his mind.
One of the seven natural wonders
One of the seven natural wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Grand Canyon is one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.
The Grand Canyon is about five or six million years old, but rocks at the canyon bottom date back about 2 billion years. Human artifacts have been found dating back nearly 12,000 years to the Paleo-Indian period, and it’s been continuously occupied into the present day.
The land now known as Grand Canyon National Park, which celebrates its centennial anniversary in February, was first protected by the US government in 1893. When Congress resisted US President Theodore Roosevelt’s effort to make it a national park, which required Congressional approval, he protected it as a national monument in 1908, which he could do without their help. It became Grand Canyon National Park on February 26, 1919.
“In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world,” said Roosevelt at the time. “I hope you will not have a building of any kind, not a summer cottage, a hotel or anything else, to mar the wonderful grandeur, the sublimity, the great loneliness and beauty of the canyon. Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it.”

Given that illustrious history, McBride was surprised to hear from people working inside and around Grand Canyon National Park that the canyon faces multiple threats.
They come from increased helicopter flights, a proposed tram to the canyon floor, proposed tourist developments and possible uranium drilling. (The threat of uranium isn’t a hypothetical issue: Three buckets of uranium ore were stored at the park museum for nearly two decades, according to a park employee who went public in February. Federal officials are investigating his report.)
While some of the developers who want to make money off the park aren’t from the area, some are Native American tribes who have watched others profit for decades.
A park under threat of development
Most visitors spend only a few minutes at the South Rim, experiencing just that famous view of Grand Canyon National Park, unaware of the canyon’s role as home to ancient peoples, animals and plant life or the threats and economic pressures placed on it.
So McBride decided to hike the length of the canyon, a 750-mile journey (give or take a few miles).
There wasn’t any thru-trail for him to follow. And the hike would include an elevation gain and loss of around 100,000 vertical feet, unstable rock and temperatures fluctuating from 8 degrees to 116 degrees Fahrenheit.
“I don’t know why I got the idea to walk it,” since there’s no trail for much of the distance, he says. “I figured it’d be challenging, but I’ve done a lot in the back country and wilderness and I figured it couldn’t be that hard. And oh, how wrong I was.”
When McBride and his friend, writer Kevin Fedarko, first started planning their hike, they convinced experienced Grand Canyon hiker Rich Rudow to let them join his September 2015 hike.
It didn’t go well.
Loaded up with way too much camera gear and not prepared for the impact of the extreme heat on their bodies, the canyon made them sick and disoriented, forcing them out on their sixth day, as Fedarko later wrote in National Geographic.

Back in Flagstaff, Arizona, McBride was diagnosed with hyponatremia, a heat-induced imbalance of salts and minerals, which could have killed him.
There would be no thru-hike.
In fact, McBride and Fedarko thought about quitting as they got medical attention and recovered from their first attempt. But the local hiking community and Native American conservationists convinced them to complete the trip in order to draw attention to the magnificent natural wonder.
Hiking in two-week stints
During five weeks in October, they planned a hiking trip that involved hiking the canyon in two- to three-week stints starting in November 2015 going through March 2016, often bringing more experienced Grand Canyon hikers along, traveling about 15 miles per day and 150-200 miles per trip, completing about 600 miles before summer.
They skipped hiking during the deadly hot summer months — but still photographed the park — and finished up their last two-week stint in late October of 2016.
“There’s no trail for 70 to 80 percent of it, so you have to find your way and you have to learn how to find water. You have to make sure you don’t get pinned up on a cliff, just kinda figure out how to stay alive,” McBride said. “it’s a great lesson in humility and self-sufficiency and getting back in tune with our natural world.”
He carried just one camera, a Sony A7 with a wide angle lens 16-35, to shoot the video that became “Into the Grand Canyon,” a movie airing on National Geographic and streaming on NationalGeographic.com, and the pictures that became his book, “The Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim.”
McBride went through eight pairs of shoes over 13 months, hiked through four sprained ankles, two broken fingers, that case of hyponatremia, lost two girlfriends and even threw his heart out of rhythm, requiring heart surgery.
The lessons he learned, the wisdom he gained, the humility he earned — all of that, plus a careful selection of his images, were more than enough to fill his book.
Here are some of his discoveries on the journey, in his own words and adapted from his book:
It can be viewed from space
“Despite my fatigue, I often lay awake at night: sometimes too wired and worried about finding water and sometimes too spellbound by the spray of stars above us. Kevin (Fedarko) describes this celestial sweep as a second river — one that mirrors the main Colorado below us.
An aerial picture taken on January 3, 2019, shows the Grand Canyon covered with snow in Arizona. (Photo by DANIEL SLIM/AFP/Getty Images)
“Being inside the only canyon on the planet that can be seen from space makes you feel miniscule. And when you stare skyward, you realize one of this landscape’s unspoken marvels is the clarity of its night sky — one of the few landscapes in America without a blanket of light pollution. I lose myself in the space above and the idea that Mother Nature is still queen in some parts.
“As I doze, I overhear Kevin taking audio notes (easier than writing when he is tired), remarkably 100 yards from me. It is so quiet I think he is five feet away. He describes these moments ‘below the river of stars’ as if ‘the canyon is holding us in the palm of its hand.’”
A silence so profound
“When you get beyond the roar of the river inside the canyon, the silence is so profound and so ancient that it escapes description. At times it makes my ears ring because I’m trying to listen so hard to something that isn’t there. At other times the void of noise is so profound I wonder if it belongs to another world — a world we have long forgotten.
“In the evenings or early mornings, Kevin and I can converse in relaxed, tired voices even though we are the length of a football field apart.
“The same occurs when we hike, but if a single rib of rock separates us, we can’t hear each other holler at the top of our lungs, as if, at times, our voices can’t pierce the blanket of quiet that envelops us.”
The unfiltered night sky
“The clarity of Kevin’s ‘river of stars’ is hemmed on the edges by the distant glow of Las Vegas and St. George, Utah. Otherwise, looking across the sweep of erosion, rock, and time, there is no sign of civilization before us. Of course, we do see jets blinking above, mostly headed to Los Angeles, but they die down after midnight.
“It’s so silent (that) you can be laying in the morning, and you can hear just the distant brush of the bat wings as they’re going out and looking for bugs, and you could hear the little clatter of sheep hooves on a rock layer that might be 1,000 feet below you.
“We just don’t have a silence that’s that deep … it made me realize just how magical that is and what a noisy world we live in.
“I think that was part of the magic where it changed me to a degree, and I now am very aware of noise and silence. It’s not silence without sounds. It’s a silence without the chaotic noise of human sounds. It’s a silence layered with these rich wildlife sounds that we’ve forgotten or our senses are not used to hearing.”
You, too, can go deeper into the canyon
While many visitors only visit the South Rim or take a short (and noisy) helicopter ride to view the canyon, McBride says there’s a better way to appreciate this magnificent national park without risking one’s life on a year-long adventure.
Pack a hat, good hiking shoes and lots of water and choose to spend the day at the canyon beyond a few minutes at the South Rim. “Experience it away from vehicles. You can do that in a variety of ways.”

Visitors can hike into the canyon, just remembering that the hike back up is twice as hard. Visitors can also ride a mule down into the canyon and back up, or ride one way and hike the other way.
Bicycle lovers can rent bicycles and ride the bike path along the South Rim or mountain bike on the trail on the North Rim (open seasonally). Guests using wheelchairs will find some wheelchair-accessible trails, including the Trail of Time and parts of the Rim Trail.
Hardier types can hike two-thirds of the way into the canyon (with all of your gear) and camp at Indian Garden Campground, where there is drinking water. There are also rafting trips for every skill level.
Listen to the sounds
If you take some time to listen to the sounds of the canyon, quietly, McBride says it may change you.
“The silence of this natural wonder starkly contrasts with the noise we make everywhere else, even as the canyon invites us to carry some of that silence within ourselves as we return to the world beyond the rims,” writes McBride.
“As I wonder if any of my images have captured that, I find myself pondering an even deeper question: Is it possible that this journey by foot, along with the photographic record that it has yielded, might help illuminate and underscore what we all share — as well as what we all risk losing — if we fail to protect this vast abyss by foregoing the urge to transform its beauty into cash and simply leaving it as it is?
“While the answer to that question is for others to decide, I do know one thing. After spending so many months drenched in the silence and magic of the seventh natural wonder of the world, I know there is only one place that looks and sounds like this.”

Soraya Roberts | Longreads | January 2019 | 8 minutes (1,974 words)
Covington Catholic High School, St. Michael’s College School, Georgetown Preparatory School. All three are Catholic, mostly white, mostly rich, all-boys, and all three have recently made the news. At Covington, student Nick Sandmann went viral after a video emerged showing him, surrounded by a bunch of white classmates in the same glaring MAGA hats fresh off the same anti-abortion rally, mocking Native American Indigenous Peoples March attendee Nathan Phillips. At St. Mike’s school — Canadian, suggesting we may be less nice than we are similar — several students were charged after a video appeared on social media in which their fellow classmates were assaulted, one with a broomstick. Eight boys were eventually expelled after several incidents were investigated, all, according to reports, involving football and basketball players. Georgetown Prep, meanwhile, made the news when Christine Blasey Ford accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of assaulting her when they were teenagers while fellow Georgetown student Mark Judge watched. “Indelible in the hippocampus is the laughter,” she said. The quote reverberated across social media once again after the Covington video went viral.
“I’d think it important to consider the presence of the peer group, since for boys and young men that’s often the crucial public in shaping the enactment of masculinities,” says University of Sydney Professor Emerita Raewyn Connell, an Australian sociologist and one of the first to carve out men’s studies as discipline in the 1970s. She is referring to the Covington video but could just as well be talking about any of the other schools, or any other all-boys school in America, really. She says that “collective bullying behaviour” can target anything from gender to sexuality to race. Same-sex environments can be particularly noxious, Connell explained in a 2003 report: “Some institutions designed for boys, such as sporting clubs and boys’ schools, define a strongly-marked, even exaggerated, masculinity in their organizational culture.” These days we would call that toxic masculinity, but back in the ‘80s, Connell, who wrote the seminal 1995 book Masculinities, called it something else.
“Hegemonic masculinity” was first coined in 1982 by Connell and co-authors Dean Ashenden, Sandra Kessler, and Gary Dowsett in Making the Difference: Schools, Families and Social Division. The Australian government had released a report in 1975 — “Girls, School and Society” — which prompted the 1982 study, in which students, teachers, and parents in local schools were interviewed in order to explore social inequality. They did their field work in the late ‘70s, an era in which questions of sex were in vogue following the women’s liberation movement and subsequent feminist critiques of the patriarchy. “It wasn’t that gender hierarchies had become more pronounced,” Connell tells me, “but that debate about them had become more intense.”
Though certain elements of “hegemonic masculinity” were later heavily critiqued, the fundamental concept persists, which is that of a dominant masculinity in any given situation that supersedes all other masculinities around it. “Because the concept of hegemonic masculinity is based on practice that permits men’s collective dominance over women, it is not surprising that in some contexts, hegemonic masculinity actually does refer to men’s engaging in toxic practices — including physical violence — that stabilize gender dominance in a particular setting,” Connell and James W. Messerschmidt wrote in their 2005 reevaluation of the original theory. That same year, these “toxic practices” were dubbed elsewhere by another academic as “toxic masculinity,” marking the term that 14 years later has become so pervasive its origins have been almost entirely lost.
* * *
One of the first appearances of toxic masculinity in the mainstream press was in a 1990 New Republic article by Daniel Gross. “The Gender Rap: ‘Toxic Masculinity’ and Other Male Troubles” focused on a new-age movement that appeared to resonate with a healthy number of American men (the first annual Men’s Studies Conference had launched the year before). Gross credited Shepherd Bliss — who preferred the term “mythopoetic” to “new age” — with coining toxic masculinity as a phrase “to describe that part of the male psyche that is abusive.” Bliss comes from a military family and says his authoritarian father embodied the term he defines to me as “behavior that diminishes women, children, other men.” He still has a men’s group, which he separates from “negative” men’s rights groups, and he emphasizes that the expression he invented is “not meant to condemn all males.”
The California-based retiree is surprised his ‘80s neologism has gotten so much attention lately, considering no one really seemed to notice it before. Bliss couldn’t recall exactly when or where he first uttered “toxic masculinity,” but claims it was around the time he named his men’s group. That would have been in 1986, when he was a contributing editor of Yoga Journal and wrote about how the mythopoetic movement “seeks to learn from ancestors and retrieve wisdom from the past that can be applied to the lives of men today.” The man he proposed was the opposite of the urban industrial model; he lived more primally, with stronger father-son connections, male bonding, and a close relationship with the land. Bliss held $200 healing retreats that were attended by about 50,000 men looking to get back to literal nature, but also the figurative nature of man. “I use[d] a medical term because I believe that like every sickness, toxic masculinity has an antidote,” he told TNR. (In practice, this antidote, according to one attendee, involved “farting, crawling around on all fours, wrestling, crafting animal masks, and butting heads.”)
So, yes, technically toxic masculinity was coined in the mid-’80’s, but Connell had already recognized the concept. And there are reasons Bliss’ version didn’t really take off outside of that side-eyeing TNR article. This was the era of the feminist backlash, so there wasn’t much room for a backlash against men outside the minutiae of academia. And Yoga Journal hadn’t exactly cracked the mainstream — the ‘80’s were, ironically, not a very radical time — and even if it had, toxic masculinity would have still been bathed in a vague fanciful hippie-ish light. Not to mention that Bliss’ definition of his own term was itself a little airy-fairy. No, masculinity was too impervious for yoga — we needed science.
Scholars point to psychiatrist Dr. Terry A. Kupers as the source of “toxic masculinity” as we now know it, particularly his definition in a 2005 prison study: “Toxic masculinity is the constellation of socially regressive male traits that serve to foster domination, the devaluation of women, homophobia, and wanton violence.” Kupers has been studying incarcerated masculinity for most of his career (his most recent book is Solitary), but in the ‘80’s he was involved in the pro-feminist men’s movement and realized he could integrate his knowledge of gender with his knowledge of prisons. Kupers found that Connell’s hegemonic masculinity, when applied to prisons, was in fact toxic masculinity — which is to say prison is toxic masculinity in its “pure form.” He points specifically to black men who are disproportionately (along with Hispanic men) incarcerated by America’s “justice” system. These are men for whom institutionalized racism has shut them off from “positive ways” of expressing masculinity — excelling at school or at work, for instance — causing them to resort to “negative ways” like crime. In prison the lack of authority is complete, so the toxicity is equally complete. “I don’t think it’s a matter of them being inclined to fight with each other and gain dominance; they’re not,” Kupers says. “Rather they’ve been deprived of all the more positive avenues to get ahead so they choose to maintain their manhood in the prison yard.”
What does this have to do with a bunch of white upper crust school boys? “My sense was that what we see in prison, the sort of tough guy on the yard kind of thing, where prisoners buff up and fight each other for dominance and where sexual assault is the ultimate humiliation,” Kupers explains, “my sense was that that’s not that different from what men do out in the world.”
* * *
“[Y]oung men use crime as a means of constructing the kind of stereotypic masculinity that helps them traverse their adolescence and win the acceptance of peers, as well as fathers, coaches, and other hypermasculine role models,” writes Kupers. This is where stealing a car, joining a gang, bragging about rape — or confronting a Native American, groping a girl, assaulting a boy — becomes a way of being a man. This is also where privileged white boys are divided from other boys. While the kids at Covington and St. Mike’s and Georgetown Prep are acting out in their adolescence, they have the opportunity to graduate to a more socially acceptable adulthood of building a career (a Supreme Court position, maybe?) and a family. Without the same opportunity, the boys who are not white, who are not privileged, sidestep from the school yard to the prison yard.
Without his friends around him, sitting in front of NBC interviewer Savannah Guthrie, Nick Sandmann, the Covington teen from the viral video, looks like he’s soiling himself. Unblinking, speaking in a slow monotone, he is the opposite of how he looked in the video — smug, shameless, full of power. He is emasculated, as ineffectual as Brett Kavanaugh’s red-faced temper tantrum as he testified after Christine Blasey Ford. Yet both have arrived: Sandmann’s voice in the media has drowned out that of Nathan Phillips, and Kavanaugh is comfortably installed in the Supreme Court. And St. Mike’s, though none of its students have spoken publicly, has reinstated a Varsity team in which police say members participated in the assaults. These young men have successfully used crime as a means of constructing the kind of stereotypic masculinity that helps them traverse their adolescence and win the acceptance of peers, as well as fathers, coaches, and other hypermasculine role models.
This is the reason Gillette’s latest ad shows, among other aggressive male behaviors, a group of boys chasing another, and asks, “Is this the best a man can get?” Men who thought the ad was portraying them — yikes — believed they were being made to feel toxic just for existing. They responded with the hashtag #gilletteboycott and dumped Gillette’s products en masse. A week after the ad went up, Toronto writer Audra Williams posted a vintage image of Kris Kristofferson comforting Sinead O’Connor on stage at Madison Square Garden in 1992. It was two weeks after she had ripped up a picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live to protest abuse in the Catholic Church, and the audience would not quiet down. Kristofferson had been tasked with removing the 25-year-old singer from the stage, but instead he held her until she was ready to perform. “The recent Gillette ad has started/furthered a lot of conversations about what alternatives to toxic masculinity look like,” Williams tweeted. “This is it.”

“There’s a very strong confrontation between the two ends of the spectrum right now and in it I think there’s the potential to form a new idea about masculinity,” says Kupers. On the right side there is the President and his hatred of the other, whether it be a woman or literally anyone else who is not like him. That is to say, the loudest voice in America “is giving permission to the most reactionary, the most racist, the most homophobic tendencies in people to be expressed.” On the left side, however, there are a growing number of others — women, women of color, LGBTQ people — in politics, there are campaigns like Gillette’s, there are fourth-wave feminists calling out oppression. So even though hatred may be freely expressed, it will no longer go without being challenged, and therein lies the option to change. “Masculinity is not a fixed entity embedded in the body or personality traits of individuals,” writes Connell. “Masculinities are configurations of practice that are accomplished in social action…” To paraphrase Kupers, they’re not bad kids, but it’s up to their parents, their role models, society as a whole, to ensure that they don’t grow up to be worse.

Remember Me Thursday 2018
Barks, meows, and whimpers bounce off of the walls.  Furry paws frantically scratch at wire cage doors.  Tears stream from their eyes staining their fallen faces.  Hope begins to fade as time marches on bringing these orphaned pets ever closer to their grim demise.
Sadly, over 2.7 million shelter animals are euthanized every year before they are able to find their forever homes. (Source:  Animal 24-7 published by Merritt Clifton).  What’s even more heartbreaking is that just 30% of pets in the United States are adopted from rescue facilities. (Source: The Humane Society of the United States 2013).  This means that a staggering 70% of pets are still being purchased from breeders.
As a pet parent of five rescue dogs and three cats, I’ve never understood why people looking to adopt often immediately seek out a breeder.  They pay thousands of dollars for a custom canine or cat when their perfect match could be just around the corner at their local animal shelter.
Some of the reasons I’ve heard from such adopters are:
The shelter won’t have the specific breed I’m looking for.
Shelter animals have behavioral issues.
I want to know my pet’s linage.
If I buy from a breeder, my pet’s temperament will be perfect.
 In reality:
There are hundreds of rescue groups and organizations across the country that are dedicated to specific dog and cat breeds.  I even know of several that only deal with differently-abled animals (blind, deaf, etc.).
Many shelter programs incorporate training into the animals’ daily routines.  If the prospective pet does have any issues, the shelter staff or foster parents will be able to inform potential adopters so that there won’t be any surprises post adoption.
Unless you plan on breeding or showing your new dog or cat, there is no real value in knowing your pet’s linage or having official papers.  Also, it has been proven that mixed breed animals have less inherited genetic health problems than purebreds.
Shelter animals have the added benefit of gaining socialization skills.  From group walks to day trips with their foster families, shelter animals get to experience the world around them.  However, animals coming from breeders are often kept in isolation to ensure that the bloodlines will remain pure.
I would like to share the adoption stories of four of my dogs:  Theo, Penny, Adriel, and Hope.  Theo and Penny were almost euthanized while Adriel and Hope were rescued from backyard breeders.  Here are their stories.
Theo:  While not much is known about Theo’s past, one thing is for certain:  He was abused by children.  Whenever Theo saw a child, he would fly into a barking and snarling frenzy while hiding behind our legs.  This is probably why he was dumped at the local humane society and labeled as vicious.
None of the staff could get close to Theo.  He was tired of being abused.  He was shut down.  The date for his euthanasia was set.
Two hours before Theo was to be killed, a woman specializing in Pug rescues came into the shelter.  She was immediately drawn to Theo.  The staff warned her that his time was up and he couldn’t be rehabilitated.  The woman decided to try anyway.
There she sat on the cold, hard concrete for two hours straight.  Theo had stopped snarling.  He sat next to the steel bars of the door and allowed the woman to pet him.  The staff was amazed when the woman left the building with Theo in tow, smiling.
Theo is now 15 years young.  If it wasn’t for the kindness and patience of this woman, his life would have been cut drastically short.
Theo is now 15 years old!
Penny:  Penny was found roaming the streets of California.  She was immediately taken to a high-kill shelter.  While Penny was a sweet and loving pooch, her unique looks made her undesirable in the eyes of would-be adopters.  She was born with a deformed front paw and a severe overbite.
One day, a woman entered the shelter and discovered Penny.  She immediately made a call to her veterinarian friend, Cynthia Lee, who just happened to own Second Chance Animal Rescue in Springfield, Illinois.  Lee wasted no time in getting Penny out of the shelter.  In fact, she paid an animal transporter to drive Penny from California to the rescue in Illinois.
Penny’s adoption profile was posted on Petfinder.com.  Still, no one wanted to adopt a seemingly “broken” dog.  Then I came across her biography and fell in love the moment I saw her picture.
While she may look different, nothing holds her back from living her best life.  Penny recently celebrated her seventh birthday.  She also has an award-winning children’s book that tells the tale of her adoption journey to inspire others to adopt differently-abled animals.  Penny is also a volunteer with the Animal Protection Association of Missouri where she helps co-teach the humane education class. Adriel:  Adriel was rescued from a backyard breeder.  She had been kept in a wire crate for most of her young life.  Her leg muscles did not develop properly because of this and she is unable to jump.  Adriel was also born with a very distinctive birth defect:  Her tongue is longer than her head so it always sticks out.
From the moment I saw Adriel’s picture on the St. Louis Senior Dog Project website, I knew she should be a part of our furry family.  When the adoption application was approved, we were overjoyed.  I couldn’t wait to bring her home.
Several weeks later, I picked her up at the local Petsmart.  While I was excited, Adriel was terrified.  Her dark brown eyes darted back and forth.  She actually held her legs stiffly out in front of her so that she wouldn’t get close to my face or chest.  I feared that she didn’t like me.
Bringing her home was also difficult.  She ran and hid from me and my husband…but fell in love with our resident dog, Theo.  While they bonded quickly, it took several months before Adriel felt she could trust us.
My husband and I worked diligently on training and studied up on dogs that had been rescued from breeders.  We soon learned that her terror was associated with the human interaction she received while at the breeder’s facility.
Thankfully, with love and patience, Adriel soon blossomed into the world’s best lap dog.  She now eagerly soaks up attention from everyone that she meets and will paw at the person if they stop petting her.  Adriel is also a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International where she provides touch therapy to kids’ clubs, nursing home residents, Autism groups, etc.
Adriel has been a therapy dog for 7 years!
Hope:  Hope is the product of a backyard breeder.  She is a mini double dapple Dachshund that was born without eyes and is completely deaf.  Her breeder bred two dapple Dachshunds together knowing that doing so can result in double dapples, which often have health issues such as being born blind, deaf, or both.
The exotic white coloring of the Dachshund pups in double dapple litters is highly sought after by adopters.  Often times, they have no idea what a cruel practice this is.  Upon finding out that Hope was both blind and deaf, he wanted to kill her.  She was useless to him because he couldn’t breed her.
Thankfully, the man’s wife stepped in and claimed Hope as her own.  Hope was protected for several years until the woman died.  The breeder than took Hope with a choke chain around her neck and surrendered her to Dachshund Rescue North America.
Hope was immediately placed into a loving foster home where she even had other doxies to play with.  I knew when I saw her on the rescue’s website that she would need lots of extra care and attention.  My heart kept saying, “If you don’t adopt her, no one will.”
The first week post adoption was daunting.  My husband and I watched helplessly as she excitedly raced around the house running head first into the walls.  But, she never made a sound.  Hope simply backed up and went in another direction.
By the end of the week, she had learned the entire layout of the house.  Two months later, she taught herself to bark at the back door when she wanted to go out and potty and knew to come back to the door and bark to be let in.
She might be differently-abled but never disabled!  Hope has been featured on The Dodo where her video went viral with over 5.5 million views.  She has also been featured on numerous Facebook and Instagram pages.  Hope has over 7,000 followers on Instagram and receives messages daily about what an inspiration she is.  One person in particular sent a private message to her Facebook page stating that seeing Hope living such a wonderful life helps the person cope with his/her depression.
Most recently, she was selected as an Honorary Inner Beauty Ambassador by Instagram sensation, @a_gecko_and_his_pjs.  She now has custom stickers and magnets that are being sold with 100% of the profits benefiting Wayside Waifs, a no-kill shelter in Kansas City, Missouri. (www.havinghopealways.com)

I hope that these stories inspire you to adopt from your local animal shelter or rescue group.  Together, we can end the needless killing of animals; be a voice for the voiceless; and ensure that all creatures find a loving forever home.
Please take a moment today to remember those animals whose time ran out before they could be united with their forever families.
