what puts yttd miles above dgr for me is the character relationships . i know its part of the plot but i do think dgr having all the characters being young adults means they're restricted on the diversity of the type of relationships shown. two characters can be like , friends, enemies, strangers or lovers ( they could've done something interesting with family members or people who knew each other before the killing game but that never really came up ? closest we got was enoshima and ikusaba and we never saw them interact ingame ) .
yttd is like . heres a 17 year old highschool girl and her 17 year old highschool boy best friend . and heres the 14 year old high school girl who sees sara as a replacement for her older sister . and heres reko and alice who are 20-something siblings who havent had contact for years and a strained relationship . and heres a 19 year old art student and her wacky 30 year old professor who cares about her so much he sacrifices himself just in case there was a threat . and heres the 22 year old job-hopper who is the other side of the coin to sara and is unknowingly the older brother of kanna . and heres the 30 year old ex-cop who starts off probably being pretty manipulative but grows to see sara like a daughter/younger sister figure . etc etc etc .
theres just SO MUCH. you can draw a line between most characters and find some evidence for how they feel about each other , even if their relationship isn't incredibly defined . and i think the character work is SO GOOD, it really really makes you care abt everyone . there isnt a single yttd character i can say i dislike ( though qtaro is probably my least favourite )
