Genre: fluff, slight angst, slice of life
Word count: 4.5k
BEWARE OF: a valentines special, a lot hand holding, quiet glances, some intense yearning, sweetheart!chan, what a little gentleman, lonely!reader, friends to lovers
Summary: As someone who’s never fallen in love or had the chance to fall in love, for valentines you were going to things differently by proposing spending valentines with your one and only lovely coworker Lee Chan and intrigued with nothing else to do, he accepts.
AUTHOR NOTE: supriseee, as a birthday celebrate for our lovely’s Dino birthday, I wrote a valentines special with him as your date, now we can enjoy this on the day of Chan and on valentines day. i struggled so hard writing thing because all i’ve been writing is smut and the thought of fluff right now is so warped in my head and I keep wanting to write them to bang, what does this say about me?
“Be my valentine?” You asked with a note in hand.
“I thought people ask that on Valentine’s Day?” Chan inquired, “Or have I been doing that wrong?”
You took his hand and placed it in his empty palms, now occupied with a carefully written note that had just a spritz of your favorite perfume. “It’s both! I would like to ask you, my dear friend and coworker, to be my date for Valentine's day. And don’t say you’re working, I know we’re both off that day, remember I handle our schedules.”
He chuckled, opening the folded note, impressed by your craftsmanship, “Wow, no one’s ever made me a card like this before. And is that,” he sniffed the card stock, “Marc Jacobs?”
“The Philosophy actually.” You scoffed. “Like I have money for high end with my salary. “
“Oh, so you don’t—oh, well, I thought you got the pay raise too, just me.”
You playfully shoved his shoulder, “Shut up, no, you did—wait, did you actually—Nevermind that. So what do you say?”
You pushed his favorite banana and blueberry muffin in front of him to essentially sweeten the deal. His eyes perked up at the treat’s appearance and his hand reached out towards it. He mused at your offer, already taking apart the pastry to put in his mouth. “Just one question. Why me?”
“Why not you?” You flailed back.
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
You took a moment to let his mind wander. Chan patiently anticipated your answer patiently as he enjoyed his dessert. His smile grew twice its normal size hearing your sincere answer.
“You were the first person that came to mind.”
His eyes softened, clutching his chest as if swarmed by an abrupt abundance of warmth, “Aw. Okay. I’ll do it. What’s the plan?”
“Well, I will do that planning, but you can go off and suggest places or activities we can do for that day and I can bounce off them.”
Chan simply nodded, finding your idea to be easy enough to handle.
In turn, you leaned against the counter to stare back at Chan amused. “To be honest, I’m surprised you didn’t put up a fight. I wasn’t sure if you had anything to do that day, but I guess it’s just my luck you’re single and lonely.”
“Don’t make me change my mind.”
“You've already accepted and ate the muffin.”
Chan admired the letter you made him during his lunch break, while you left your shift for the day, waving your short, but animated, arms from the parking lot shouting, “See you tomorrow for work, Valentine!”
To which the young man reciprocated with a smile and a less chaotic wave of his own. Still feeling immensely flattered that he was the one you asked, Chan took his time appreciating the love letter he received. It was noticeably filled with love and your personality, he could only imagine all the paper cuts you’ve likely endured crafting such a thing. It was wrapped around with destination stickers, hearts, and in calligraphy, making it the sweetest sentiment. He could barely make out what he was reading, given that he always sucked at cursive, but was able to decipher eventually.
To my dearest Chan,
It would do me great honor to be the one you spend your day with on the loveliest of days with the loveliest of people. If you could be so kind as to accept my proposal of being my beloved valentine, I promise I will treat you no less than when you deserve for being the most wonderful Valentine’s date to walk the Earth.
Sincerely an admirer,
Y/n L/n
Chan blushed, ingraining the works in a wrinkle of his brain, enraptured by your beautifully cliche language. “What a sap.”
Meanwhile, you were ecstatic to have something to do once for that holiday and even more happy that your closest work friend accepted. Chan was the type to occasionally butt heads with you about who should provide the team with lunch since you both insisted you had full pockets to do so, but often found common ground when it came to methods of working, and although you rarely ate out with any of the people you worked with, Chan became the exception. During off hours, when there are days filled with nothing and you two would just end up doing nothing together but just talk, and boy, did he love to talk. In that way, you found him to be very like minded to you, yet it felt like you still only knew him at a surface level. The reason being he was friends with everybody.
He was a pretty picture in a pretty frame with no apparent flaws. Maybe that’s why he became the perfect candidate for your valentine. He seems to be a considerably nice guy that offers genuine interactions and that makes him a likeable person. Likable people just carry themselves in a way that makes others feel like they’re special with how they treat them. Their behavior may seem ordinary in their mind, but it sways people in their vicinity, collecting admirers like Pokémon. As of lately, you’ve only ever seen Chan in a platonic manner, but what’s to say that won’t change. You had no doubt in your mind Chan could probably do everything you ask of him since he’s just the type of guy to do so and maybe in this experience you could learn something about yourself too.
After a week of exchanging messages of planning the day, Valentine’s day finally arrived with a hitch and you become excited beyond belief. Chan had you really hyped, letting you know how completely compliant he was to your plans and promised he would do things accordingly. Without a worry in your mind, you got ready for the day. Dressed in red and pink, you clutched your heart-shaped purse to your side, waiting for Chan to arrive at your doorstep like he said he would. And as if he read your mind, he arrived promptly at your planned time, dressed mighty handsome might you add, and stepped out of his car with a bouquet of daffodils.
“Chan, you didn’t have to,” you extended your arms to accept them with a wide grin.
“Of course I did. It was on top of your list,” he pulled his phone out of his pocket, “and specifically daffodils. I would think you’d like roses like everyone else.”
“I’ve developed a recent liking for them.” You accepted the bountiful gift and inhaled their scent, “For a lot of people, they mean new beginnings and rebirth, but I learned it also means a deep love that is unrivaled…I thought that was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. It makes me want to have that someday, and if not with someone else, maybe myself.”
Chan was silent for a moment, taking the time to deeply appreciate the thoughtful answer you gave him. For as long as you’ve worked with each other, Chan has always admired the little things you’ve put the most heart in. Had it not been the pleasing color-coded display of clothes, folded without a single crease, it would be the perfect tower of perfume that you’d stack, attracting the eyes of all customers that entered. You played off as this happy, cheerful person, but he knew what it like was pretend to be fine when you’re not. It’s okay to act the way your feel or hide them however you wished. There was just a tinge of sadness in your tone that he could not ignore, reminding him of himself once in your shoes
“Love is by however you want to see it. If it’s with someone else so be it, but loving yourself knowing yourself is the strongest love you can have. You’ll get there, y/n.”
“Damn, Chan. Starting off strong today I see.” You let out a light chuckle, embracing your flowers in one arm and taking his hand with the other. Chan, almost startled, stared down at the physical contact and then back at you. Your eyes beamed just as bright as the sun, nudging him along in the direction of his car. “Let’s go, valentine.”
The first stop was a cute little cafe that was of course as busy as it can be during a corporate holiday. The line ran for blocks as everyone was eager to get inside to take advantage of the Valentine special, yourself included. Chan only knew about the event through you, but hope to get in nonetheless. It was so-called a deal of the year, where the couples that take advantage can order a 3-course meal; appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink included, for half the price of what it would be normally. You only ever admired walking past this cafe, never being able to go because of how ridiculously priced it was, but this special was the chance to see if it really lived up to its rumors.
“Carey has been talking about taking Soojin here and I’ve wanted to go so bad. I’m genuinely so excited.” you grinned like a toddler on candy, pulling on his arm hooked around yours.
“I have to admit, this place does look really cute, but do you think we’ll actually get in and eat in time for the opening of the butterfly exhibit?” Chan questioned dubiously.
You sighed, trying to keep a happy composure. “Then there’s plan b: Jiji’s Pizza Parlor.”
“If it makes you feel any better, I know the owner and he makes a mean pie; pizza and apple. So I don’t mind if we end up going there.” He reassured, patting your shoulder.
You nodded, keeping that in mind. You were really depending on this Valentine's special to happen, but if you were to be smart about it, you probably should’ve planned ahead and made a reservation. In the meantime, Chan would just squeeze your hand reassuringly as he watched you grip your flowers in hand and hoped to subdue some of that stress of planning the day out and having it already start poorly. When another hour of waiting came, you took your business elsewhere, continuing your conversation on the trail of baked dough and aromatic tomato sauce.
“And that’s why I never learned to ride a bike. Clowns terrify me and getting run over by one on a bicycle made me fear bikes too.”
Chan doubled over laughing, imagining a miniature version of yourself screaming and crying at the sight of either a clown, a bike, or both coming into your view. “Why would you tell me that? Now I’m gonna surprise you with a picture of a bike every time I see you.”
You clutched his arm. “Don’t you dare, I’m still going through therapy, jerk.”
He rolled his eyes playfully, softly nudging you, “Fine, fine. Don’t get all ‘angy’ with me. I’ll stop.”
“Why are you saying ‘angry’ like that when you’re referring to me? You always do that.”
He shrugged. “Because when you get mad or pouty, I can’t take you seriously.”
“What the heck? Why not?”
“You’re kind of…too cute when you’re angry. It’s like watching Tinkerbell stomp her little feet.” He responded, reenacting little fairy stoops.
You lightly shoved him, “Fine, I get it.”
Chan was not unfamiliar with giving compliments. The standard compliment calling you cute and nice was just seem to come from a place of honestly and you played typically it off like it was nothing, but maybe it’s was the love in the air, the decorations on the streets, or the sickly sweet scent of chocolate being passed off to people of all kinds invading your nostrils that you actually felt your heart flutter for a second by Chan’s words. It was Chan after all. Handsome, friendly local, Lee Chan.
And being that same Lee Chan, he was your work friend that you enjoyed the occasional movie rant with. No more, no less, even with your arms intertwined like they are now. You were going to follow your head and not these faux love-struck thoughts corrupting your thoughts.
“Well, aren’t you guys a good-looking couple? How can I help you guys both today?”
Not even bothering to fix Mingyu's statement, Chan ordered a medium meat lover's pie and a slice of pie of your choice, splitting the meal between the two of you. Chan did all the boyfriend things you had in your list, including pulling your chair out for you and wiping food stains you don’t notice at the corner of your lips. He made it come off so naturally, with no signs of force, that it made you wonder if he was mentally crossing things off your list or he was just doing it without thinking about the list in mind.
“So how do you know Mingyu? He’s the owner right?”
“Co-owner actually,” Chan corrected, wiping a grease stain from his lips, “Jihoon bought the place with his money and manages the utilities and some of the big man stuff, while Mingyu cooks, manages his stations, mans the registers, and all the profits go to them evenly. They hired me part-time for one summer. Nice guys, won’t lie.”
“So the ‘Jiji’ in Jiji’s Pizza Parlor is—”
“Jihoon, yes. He’s the brains after all. Not that Mingyu minded, he’s the one that came up with the name.” He answered, sipping his sprite.
You let out a hearty laugh, one that differed from many of the other ones you’ve had to force out of your system to seem polite. “That’s so cute. Oh my gosh.”
Chan nodded with a grin. “That’s Jihoon hyung, cute but scary. Speaking of,” he turned his attention back to the man at the register, “Where is he, Mingyu hyung?”
The taller man chuckled, “Where do you think? He’s on a date with his girl.”
“And you?” Your curiosity piqued.
“My one and only love is my job, of course,” He answered nonchalantly, dragging his rag down over the counter, “I have yet to meet someone that makes me feel the same way when I’m cooking.”
You and Chan gave each other matching expressions of doubt, continuing your meal, silently amused at the man’s answer. All while this happened, Chan’s hand never left your side and you never failed to notice. You were barely able to eat your meal, thinking about how comforting he felt. He was doing barely more than the bare minimum at this point, but constantly swaying your impression of him. Either he was being a better friend than you thought, or you were actually enjoying his company more than platonically.
“There was no rain in the forecast!”
Even now when Chan clutched your hand in the pouring rain, his coat hovering over the both of you as you sought shade, you could help but think, wow, this guy was so good at helping out his friends. By chance of luck, you managed to find a gazebo and sought comfort there. You popped a squat on the bench inside, while Chan laid his damp jacket out to dry beside him. He sat firmly next to you, eyes glued on you observing the droplets of the rain falling to the ground.
“We probably can’t make it to the exhibit either, right? The nearest bus stop is too far from here,” You pointed out. “Man, I lost my flowers too.”
“Sorry,” Chan responded, trickling with guilt, “I probably shouldn’t have ordered another slice of pie, even if it was coconut cream.”
You shook your head reassuringly at the pouting man, “even if you didn’t, it still would’ve rained.”
“Yeah, but we probably could’ve gotten there before the rain.”
“You couldn’t have predicted when or if it'd rain. No one could.” You shrugged, tantalized by the furrow of his brows.
“Still, I should’ve done better…I’m supposed to be the best valentine to walk the Earth.”
There was that weird feeling again.
It was your turn to take his hand, patting it the same way he did for you. “Well, you’re doing a great job so far. You’ve been an amazing valentine, just like I hoped you’d be.”
He had a warm glint in his eyes, accepting of your warm gesture by claiming your comforting hand in his palms. “You better mean that, my reputation depends on this.”
“What reputation, dummy?”
“Your beloved valentine.”
You threw fists lightly at his frame. “Stop throwing my words back at my face.”
“But they were so sweet. I love that letter.” He playfully gushed, only barely avoiding your punches.
“Stop it.” You exclaimed, hands still flailing at his chest.
He then placed his hooked hands on your shoulders to stop you, drawing his face closer to yours. Your eyes locked in an instant and then the beat in your chest started to resonate in your ears, getting louder as he kept a still stare to your eyes. “Make me.”
Chan realized a little too late the proximity for your faces when sees you only stare back. You stared off at him like caught in a daydream, salvia running down your throat in a speedy gulp, and could not let out a refute. Chan felt himself do the same, his hands growing clammy under your intense gaze. It feels forever how you both stare, believing there is nothing but you, Chan, and the rain surrounding you, and that’s when you noticed his gaze shift. He lingered on the inviting image of your lips opened slightly agape, making you match him unconsciously.
He couldn’t help but feel himself seamlessly dip his head forward, letting the gap shorten every millisecond until the shock of thunder caused violent vibrations to your bodies, jumping your brakes. He looked back at you frantically as if he had just woken up before looking down at his lap in utter guilt, thinking about how he nearly did something so inappropriate without your permission. You, on the other hand, were also shocked, but no longer by the clap of thunder.
“S-sorry.” Chan managed to mutter. “I almost—”
“That’s part of being a good valentine,” you interrupted, “you got caught up in the moment and got lost in your role. Don’t apologize.”
You simply took his cold, sweaty hand and looked towards the rain, following the pattern of its sound by ear. “You know, if you treat your future girlfriend half as nice as you've treated me so far, she’d never let you go.”
Chan was stuck in how naturally your hand fit in his. He had been making skin contact with you all day because it was what you asked of him, but for once he’s thinking about how soft it was or how perfect our nails were trimmed. Now his head was spinning, the fragrance that you sprayed on your body slowly fading, but pleasantly loitered in his nose. He noticed how your smile radiated within the gloominess of the crying sky, and you stayed fixated on the beautiful but frightening state of nature, which seemingly had a layer of mystery unseen by the naked eye, just like you were for him.
“What about you?”
You looked back at Chan in confusion, tilting your head to the side. “What about me?”
“You think you could let me go after this?” he questioned with a cheeky grin, lightly nudging your shoulder.
You matched his grin, squeezing his hand in yours. “For the sake of the holiday, I guess that answer is up in the air.”
No other words were exchanged after and you both simply basked in the comfort of the rain. The silence persisted and you both waited until the rain let up enough to leave. Even though you both had missed the butterfly exhibit, the rose garden, and had the boating trip canceled due to bad weather, you tried being okay with it. You opted for all those pre-planned events for dancing in the rain in the direction of your dry and safe apartment, avoiding puddles effortlessly with Chan’s light feet, making the journey more tolerable. You both finally entered your apartment in a frantic mess and beelined directly for your closet, shivering and damp beyond repair.
Shuffling through bundles of random clothing, you handed him off clothes that you were sure would fit him and told him to go ahead first in taking advantage of the bathroom.
“That’s not right, it’s your place. You should be the one to shower first,” he urged, his once done hair now falling to his eyes in a wet mess.
“And I said I would treat you no less than you deserve.” You playfully kicked his shin. “Go in there, you.”
Grinning, Chan obliged and disappeared behind the door. Meanwhile, you found some clothes that you could drape over you to shield yourself away from the cold. This gave you some to swipe clean some considerably untidy spots that looked like they needed some tending to.
Once he was done, Chan came out in only the pair of pants you provided him, holding the shirt that came with it in his hand. “The shirt was a bit small. Got anything else?”
His hair was slicked back in to bring his cleansed, fresh face into view. The sweatpants you gave him were a snug fit, hanging low at his hips, exposing his pelvic structure. And you knew he did a lot of heavy lifting, so you shouldn’t have been as surprised as you were at the toned arms, nor the deep valleys of his muscular build that glistened in the fluorescent lighting, but your vision was making him out to be a walking temptation. It was a sight unlike anything you’ve ever seen him in before and maybe you could get used to it. “I-I’ll find another.”
You stormed to your room, counting in the back of your mind the beats per minute, right now hitting at 120, and returned to the shirtless man with a sweatshirt just big enough to goodbye to his stupid perfect body. “One sweater with the name of a college I didn’t even go to.”
“Thanks,” he handed off the shirt back to you, graciously accepting your new offer and pulling it over his body, now fully clothed, “oh yeah, fits me much better.”
“So, it’s still raining. I’ll put your clothes in the dryer, take a quick shower, and you pick out a movie.” You suggested.
He nodded, “Sure. Your Netflix is already set up on the TV, right?”
“You got it.”
You helped yourself to your restroom after setting the wet clothes in the dryer, slipping out of your wet clothes, and inhaling the scent of a fresh cleanse. Chan was just in here, naked like you were now, taking advantage of the warm water that’s now making contact with you, clashing against your cold skin. That thought nearly stopped you in your tracks, an image of his hands lathering soap into perfect individual bubbles and coating his perfect form. You shook your head to bring yourself back to reality, trying to forget the man in your head was just a door away for a moment. You were learning a lot of new things about yourself today.
You exited the bathroom in an oversized shirt and sweats and had your wet clothes put away in a hamper. You met Chan’s eyes from across the room, who was already filling up a bowl with popcorn and already helped himself to the soft drinks in the fridge. “I hope you don’t mind, I dug in your pantry. You get a lot of stuff from Costco.”
“My mom tends to overbuy. So, what movie are we watching?” You approached beside him, taking some frozen empanadas out of the freezer.
“I thought you’d, especially since nothing today had been going right today.”
You contemplated for a moment before suggesting any random rom-com that came to mind, not expecting to take it seriously anyway. Chan agreed, but only in exchange that he could put up a marvel movie afterward, which you had no objections to. You had set an array of snacks at your table with Chan and then joined him on the couch, taking a bite of a hot snack fresh from your conventional oven.
“So, how are we doing this?”
You looked at him from the corner of your eye, “Do what?”
“You know,” he shrugged, gesturing towards both your bodies, “did you want to just watch  or did you want to…cuddle?”
You were a bit speechless. That wasn't something that either of you thought to discuss this kind of affection when you planned this out together, but then again, no one really planned a full day of rain and coming back to your place to watch a movie either. “You don’t have to do that, we didn't really plan for this.”
“Well, as your valentine,” He huddled closer and placed an arm over your shoulder boldly and pulled you to his side with a cute smile, “I’ll do as I see fit if you don’t mind.”
You raised no objection, hesitatingly succumbing to the warmth in his chest and staring back at his hot chocolate excuse for eyes. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
“Don’t pretend like you aren’t. Play the movie already, I’m ready to be entertained.”
Netflix’s opening screen blasted out from your speakers and the movie started introducing their characters. Chan carried the bowl of popcorn in his hand and supported it in his lap, feeding you a piece or two every minute. Involuntarily, he began making glances at your face immersed in the caricature versions of normal people on screen. A ridiculed smile of amusement appeared every time someone said a bad one-liner. Ignoring the movie entirely, Chan quietly admired you, more interested in the expressions you made than what could possibly be happening in the plot. He wondered what had possibly happened in a day to make him feel things he didn’t feel in the year knowing you or did he always feel this way and suppressed it involuntarily for reasons unknown to him?
His thoughts were interrupted by a sudden blackout that occurred, likely due to the furious storm that brewed outside knocking an electric line. You sighed out of frustration. As if things couldn’t have gotten any worse, somehow there was always a way. “Great, there’s a blackout.”
Solely depending on the lights illuminating from the windows, you looked back to see Chan’s face that focused on yours. The sight of his hyper-fixated eyes hitched your breathing in the most unhealthy manner, actually taking your breath away.
“What now?” He asked expectantly.
You watched as his adam’s apple bobbed down, letting his saliva run down his throat. He pulled his hand away from your back and rested it on the side of your cheek. Your eyes fluttered at his delicate gesture, wondering if he could hear how nervous you were. Before he could initiate words of consent, your lips met his hurriedly, feeling his pair perfectly cushion against yours. Chan, although a little disappointed he couldn’t make the first move, melted against you almost instantly. A smile formed on his lips as you matched pace. His full form directed to you, embracing you against him and you took your arms to loop around his neck, pulling him deeper in the kiss. He adored your flush skin under his touch, showing off the same excitement and adrenaline that ran through his body. He parted briefly, drowning in your longing eyes before meeting them once again, having never had a kiss felt as perfect as this one.
You took your turn to pull away this time, wanting to give your two cents. “T-that’s what you were about to ask, right? To kiss me?”
Chan’s precious face lit up like Christmas lights, pressing your lips to his in another moment of bliss before softly answering. “Yes.”
“Is this about being the best valentine ever?”
His eyes creased as he let out a loving chuckle, pushing strands of stray hair away from your face, “Safe answer: yes. Honest answer: I just really wanted to kiss you.”
