Rainbow make-up

Hi, here’s a lil oneshot where Bex does TJ’s make-up and Cyrus is like ‘omg’

I hope it’s okay!!

It was an average Friday afternoon in Shadyside; the sun was beginning to lower in the sky, stores were beginning to close for the day and kids were meeting up at their local parks to hang out late into the night, no longer stopped by school the following day. 

 The streets were bustling with anticipation of the weekend ahead as TJ skateboarded down the sidewalk, narrowly avoiding a few disgruntled passers-by. He had a helmet on of course, he wasn’t that much of a rule-breaker, and said helmet just happened to be a rainbow one that Cyrus had brought him. Who on earth wouldn’t want to wear that anyway?

 He continued to make his way towards cloud 10, where he knew Bex was likely beginning to close up for the night. TJ wasn’t entirely how he had gotten so close to her, all he knew was that she had been there for him during the costume day ordeal and from there he had started dropping by cloud 10 a few afternoons a week to talk to her. 

 He came to a halt in front of the familiar glass doors, planting his feet firmly on the ground and picking up his skateboard, which also happened to be rainbow-themed. Sue him. 

 “Hey Bex,” he singsonged, stepping inside casually and taking off his helmet. 

 “TJ!” came a voice from the back of the studio. Her head appeared around the corner then, and he couldn’t help but smile. 

 “How’s my second favourite skateboarder doing?” she asked him, walking over to the front counter. 

 “Ever since I started teaching Andi how to skateboard I’m not your favourite anymore,” he complained, secretly not annoyed by it in the slightest. He enjoyed his afternoons spent with Andi, and he wouldn’t trade them for the world.

 “But she’s my daughter, I have a legal obligation to make her my favourite,” came Bex’s equally whiny response, and TJ couldn’t help but laugh. 

 He left his skateboard and helmet by the front entrance and wandered over to one of the swivel stools, sitting down and spinning around to face Bex.

 “So what have you done this time?” she asked him knowingly, beginning to flit between various power sockets to turn them off. 

 TJ raised a hand to his chest in mock offence. “Hey - why are we assuming I’ve done something here?” 

 “Because you’re TJ,” Bex supplied as though it was obvious. 

 TJ let out an annoyed huff. “Now I don’t wanna admit that I’ve done something.” 

 “Oh come on,” Bex laughed. “Tell me! I’m curious now.” 

 TJ raised his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay. It may or may not have to do with Cyrus.” 

 “Ohhh, Cyrus huh?” Bex teased, moving over to the mirror behind him and organising a few makeup brushes. “Do tell.” 

 TJ could feel himself blushing already, which was pretty unfair considering he hadn’t even started talking yet. 

 “Okay so...god this is embarrassing.” 

 Bex shook her head. “Oh no. What have you done?” 

 “It’s not bad! It’s just...ugh.” 

 “Ugh. A very descriptive word,” Bex said, nodding wisely. 

 TJ just laughed. “Okay, okay. Basically, Cyrus was admiring one of the drawings I did, right? He was being all like ‘this is beautiful’, and you wanna know what I said?” 

 Bex smiled. “What did you say?” 

 “I said ‘you’re beautiful.’”

 Bex moved onto the next mirror with a laugh. “Are you kidding me? That’s adorable!” 

 “Yeah, but you know what’s not adorable? Running away right after.” 

 “You didn’t,” Bex gasped, bringing a dramatic hand up to her mouth. 

 “I did,” TJ told her, nodding solemnly. 

 She shook her head at that, a wide smile on her lips as he walked back over to the front counter. “So the problem here is that...you told Cyrus he was beautiful...then proceeded to run away.” 

 “Yup!” 

 “I see. Well, lucky for you, I have a solution!”

 “Really?” 

 “Talk to him,” she said simply, smiling again when TJ just let out a dramatic groan.

 “That’s your response to all of my problems,” he complained. 

 “And tell me - has it ever failed?” 

 “No,” he admitted begrudgingly, spinning absent-mindlessly in his chair. 

 Communication really was key, as he learnt over the past few months of being friends with Cyrus. A lot of their smaller conflicts had resulted from miscommunication, and they always seemed ridiculous and insignificant once they were over. 

 Bex paused in front of him for a moment, tilting her head as though an idea had struck her. 

 “Can I do your make-up?” she asked.

 TJ pulled out his phone to check the time, before looking back up with a shrug. 

 “Sure.”

 “Great!” she smiled, clapping her hands together.

 It was the first time she had asked to do his makeup, but TJ honestly wasn’t surprised. Bex was always doing Andi, Buffy and Cyrus’ makeup, so it had seemed somewhat inevitable that she’d ask him at some point.

 “How would you feel about rainbow-themed makeup?” she asked him casually, bringing another swivel stool over and positioning it in front of him. 

 “Great,” he responded with a smile. 

 Bex opened her mouth, presumably to ask something else, when the bell above the glass door chimed. 

 They both looked towards it, and without seeming dramatic TJ very nearly had a heart attack when he saw who was standing there nervously. 

 “Cyrus! You’re here for the DVD, right?” 

 The boy nodded timidly, his gaze focused solely on TJ. For a few moments they just looked at one another, and Bex had an amused smile on her face as she got up from the stool.

 “TJ’s getting his makeup done,” she explained as he headed over to the back room. 

 “Oh cool! I’m sure it’ll look nice,” Cyrus said, his cheeks visibly tinged red.

 TJ averted his gaze, feeling uncharacteristically shy all of a sudden. Cyrus tended to have that effect on him, and it was honestly kind of scary how strong it was sometimes. 

 “Thanks,” he mumbled, watching gratefully as Bex walked back over with a DVD in hand. 

 “You know, you could stay here and watch TJ get his make-up done if you wanted,” Bex mentioned casually, handing over the DVD with a smile. 

 TJ’s widened at that. Cyrus seemed to be blushing even harder now, clearly taken aback as he looked between him and Bex.

 “I - um - yeah, sure!” 

 TJ narrowed his eyes at Bex as she went to grab another stool, a smug smile on her face. She definitely knew what she was doing, and TJ honestly couldn’t find it within himself to be that mad about it. 

 TJ ended up with Bex in front of him, holding a makeup bag, and Cyrus right beside her, glancing down at his phone distractedly. 

 “Okay, I’ll start with primer!” she announced, immediately gaining Cyrus’ attention. She grabbed a small bottle from her bag before setting it aside. 

 TJ was grateful that there was going to be makeup covering his face, because the way he was blushing at that moment was quite frankly ridiculous. 

 Cyrus watched intently as she applied the primer, then dots of concealer, before moving onto some light foundation. 

 “Has anyone ever told you that you have really great skin?” Bex asked him as she blended some of the foundation. 

 “No, actually,” said TJ with a small shrug. 

 “He does, doesn’t he?” Bex asked, clearly directing the question at Cyrus. 

 The boy smiled and nodded eagerly in agreement. “He does!” 

 If TJ thought the butterflies in his stomach were bad before, nothing could compare to the havoc those words caused. 

 Ever since they had made-up after costume day, TJ couldn’t help but think they were rapidly beginning to blur the line between ‘friends’ and ‘boyfriends.’ Soft smiles and touches and laughs we’re all adding up and leaving him confused about where exactly they stood. 

 Bex moved onto lipstick, mascara and eyeshadow after that, saying true to her word and making everything as rainbow-themed as possible. Cyrus was still watching intently, which proved to be particularly distracting for TJ when Bex was applying lipstick because oh my god, is he looking at my lips right now?

 “You actually already have pretty long eyelashes, but the mascara definitely makes them stand out more. Don’t you think, Cyrus?” 

 TJ looked to the boy bashfully, who was staring at him in total awe. His eyes were roaming TJ’s face now, a faint smile on his lips that had TJ’s heart fluttering in his chest.

 “Yeah. Yeah, it does,” he agreed. 

 Bex smiled knowingly and moved onto some finishing touches, keeping up the compliments and sending TJ pointed glances whenever Cyrus would agree with her. 

 “Your makeup is officially done!” she announced with a wide smile. “Wanna see it?” 

 “Hell yeah!” 

 She stood up and slowly spun his stool around to face the mirror, placing a hand on his shoulder as he observed his reflection. 

 It was most definitely rainbow-themed, and TJ genuinely didn’t think he had ever been more in love with a make-up look. He had everything from glittery rainbow eyeshadow to matte rainbow lips and glittery contour. 

 “It’s awesome!”

 “I’m glad you like it,” she responded with a smile, directing her attention towards Cyrus. “What do you think?” 

 The boy had his hands shoved in his pockets, a bashful smile gracing his lips as he looked at TJ’s reflection. 

 “It’s great! You look really beautiful. I mean - you always do, but...especially right now.” 

 TJ’s heart skipped a beat at that. He spun back around in his chair, looking up at Cyrus with a soft smile. 

 “Thanks, Cy.” 

 Bex looked between the two knowingly. “You know what this means?” she asked them excitedly. 

 They both looked over at her with matching puzzled expressions. 

 “You both think the other is beautiful!” 

 TJ bit his lip. He had honestly forgotten why he had come here in the first place - to complain about his total lack of composure around Cyrus - but now that he thought about it...

 “I guess you’re right,” Cyrus said with a shrug, smiling playfully at TJ. 

 Bex looked between them for a moment longer, before clapping her hands together. “You two should talk. I’ll be in the backroom, okay?” 

 TJ couldn’t help but snort at that - he knew Bex would eavesdrop, but he honestly couldn’t find it within himself to care. 

 Cyrus hesitantly sat down on the stool in front of TJ. “So...you think I’m beautiful.” 

 “And you think I’m beautiful,” TJ responded, feeling very grateful for the makeup that was currently covering his blush. 

 “So...where does that leave us?” Cyrus asked him, reaching over to take his hand. 

 TJ tried desperately to focus on speaking and not on the fact that Cyrus was currently holding his hand, but it was proving to be a pretty difficult task.

 “I - um - I guess...if you wanted...we could maybe be boyfriends?” 

 Cyrus beamed at him and nodded eagerly. “I’d like that.” 

 “Great!” said TJ, honestly surprised that he had managed to get this far. 

 Bex poked her head around the corner then, a wide smile on her face. “Can I come out now?” 

 “Yes,” TJ told her, sighing playfully.

 She walked in the room and stopped in front of them, raising an amused eyebrow. “So...boyfriends, huh?” 

 “Okay thanks, Bex, we’re leaving now!” announced TJ, standing up from his stool and helping a giggling Cyrus to his feet. 

 Bex looked after the pair with a fond smile as they laughingly walked out of the studio, holding hands and exchanging soft smiles. She closed the door after them, shaking her head as she looked down at the skateboard and helmet TJ had left behind.

 “Kids,” she mused, picking both items up and storing them away for the next time TJ came along with boy issues.
