one thing i really love about the mountain goats is that their lyrics can really be interpreted in whatever way is most relatable to your own life regardless of the original meaning of the lyrics, and that's because mr. goats himself is so gifted at writing about the human condition in such a timeless and near-universally applicable way. i know realistically this man was not writing about queer tragedy or the strife of disabled youths or even, more personally, my own parents' lack of a desperately needed divorce and my family's turmoil, but it's so easy to take these beautifully crafted lyrics and apply them to personal struggles and experiences as if they were originally written for that sole purpose. i can listen to a song written 30 years ago about some random person i will never know and immediately think of someone or something from my own life today, as can millions of other people who might listen to the same song. i love this band so, so dearly.

Okay, everyone knows Tallahassee by the Mountain Goats is the ultimate Ed/Izzy album, but why is no one talking about how Transcendental Youth is Ed/Jack???
I mean:
Do every stupid thing that makes you feel alive
Do every stupid thing to try to drive the dark away
Let people call you crazy for the choices that you make
Climb limits past the limits, jump in front of trains all day
Or:
Mistreat your altar boys long enough
And this is what you get
Sad and angry, can't learn how to behave
Still won't know how in the darkness of the grave
Or:
Room full of ambitious young policemen
Everybody trying to make his mark
I was a red dot blinking on a screen up overhead.
Live like an outlaw
Clutching gold coins in his claw
Or:
Hear my rivals on the western wind
Hard to know who might or might not be your friend
Beam of the flash-light
All night in the woods
Hunt us like dogs
And then string us up for good
Lead us to the beach by our hands
And bury us there in the sand
Or:
So many so-called friends
Working for the government
(I MEAN. This song is even called ‘Counterfeit Florida Plates’!)
Or:
Something sacred, something blue
Cannons in the harbor dawn
I crawled down here to dig for bones
One more season then I'm gone
Black drapes over the crosses
Call in a favor from an old friend

Didn’t see any taxidermied or jarred mountain goats at the museum yesterday, but I did see four of them in concert. And it ruled as they always do.

I have absolutely no idea what that Scottish idiot said but if 53 year old David Tennant can climb a tree, snap a branch and then keep climbing, only to jump back down when it was time and compare himself to a mountain goat, I feel like I can do anything.
