"you find god in pain" is such a crazy insane cuckoo line. there's the interpretation that when youre in pain, you find divine understanding -- like how people turn to religion after trauma, or how artists are cliched as being at their best when theyre tortured. the line is then directly followed by commentary on martyrs being canonized when they submit to that pain. there's a bit of recontextualization: you find god (the being you idolize) in pain ("if by his own hand his spirit flies")
