Hi, do you have any fantasy recommendations? I've been in a slump and want to get back into reading. I don't mind if it's an ongoing or completed series or even if there's any standalones I don't think I've read a fantasy standalone
i don’t read that much fantasy so i’m sorry this list won’t be super comprehensive but here you go <3
strange the dreamer and muse of nightmares - just finished this duology and gave them both 5/5 stars! it’s not really your classic war packed / action fantasy if that’s what you’re looking for but i think they’re really beautifully written books with such clever plotting. also understandable but enjoyable prose and just the right level of romance
these violent delights - this is very low grade fantasy, like i don’t even think i would normally count it but since it’s technically labeled that way it’s too good to not include. another duology and 8 billion / 10 rating (especially if you like romance, knives, and action)
six of crows - i feel like i just assume everyone has read it but if you haven’t? you must.
the gilded wolves - actually fantastic? like way too complex for my pea brain to understand but just sensical enough to know it’s incredible. this is a great pick if you want found family / amazing characters. warning for a questionable ending to the last book, although as a whole it was still a great book so i can’t complain (much)
a curse so dark and lonely - god i wish more people read this series!! set in a high fantasy world with great plots and characters but still very easy to understand. will keep you on the very edge of your seat
crier’s war - super quick read(s) with such brilliant world/character building, plus it’s wlw. there’s nothing more i could ask
the folk of the air - again i kind of just assume everyone has read it. but if you haven’t, do it. now. i meant literally right this second what’s not clicking.
the bridge kingdom - needs more recognition literally cant recommend enough. fantastic and engaging world building, incredible characters, knife wife, incorporates so many amazing tropes, literally cant speak highly enough to do justice to how amazing this duology (with an imminent spinoff) is
sorcery of thornes - a standalone! although there is a companion novel set in the same world they just don’t need to be read together or share characters (as far as i know, i haven’t read it yet). this one is so so so creative and has a great main character trio with just the right hint of romance. author’s writing style is amazing
the shadows between us - another standalone for you! i didn’t like this one as much as other people but it is very popular. much more emphasis on romance on not the world or fantasy elements so i would keep that in mind depending on what you’re looking for
to kill a kingdom - standalone! this one is super interesting, definitely on the lower half of my list but a very good book in its own right. emphasis on killer mermaids and romance if that’s your kind of thing. little mermaid vibes if ariel was a killer siren
the darkest part of the forest - my last standalone for you! it’s been so long since i’ve read this book that i don’t remember a lot to say about it besides that it’s very low grade fantasy for the most part, but you can never go wrong with holly black
caraval - forever crying that this series doesn’t get more love. circus / mysterious vibes with such a gorgeous world and magic and literally the perfect amount of romantic drama
renegades - oh i’m already foaming at the mouth. this is the dystopian superhero / villain star crossed romance spy series that you never knew you needed in your life. but you do. this series will fix you
books i haven’t read yet / want to read:
we hunt the flame - my cr!! absolutely incredible so far. such a beautiful and intriguing world was created with just the right hint of star crossed romance
the poppy war - my next read, if all sticks to plan lol. i hear wildly amazing things about the plots, characters, and romances for these books so i’m so glad i can finally start reading them after getting them for christmas
an ember in the ashes - another long awaited series to get too but i fear this one has the power to crush me
kingdom of the wicked - i love sjtr so i can’t wait to read this currently ongoing series! it’s new adult with dark romance vibes
