Leon's Nightmare 2, Part 3- Gifts come in all shapes.

Tw- Violence and gore. Demonic stuff happening. I'm disappointed by the horror aspects of Leon's nightmare 1 so I'm trying my best to improve it here. Wish me luck.

Drew frowns at the kids as they make a mess. "I hope your planning to clean that up" drew frowns as athena moves to him. She just grabs his arm and he can't help but suddenly feel cold. "Athena?" Drew asks. "What did you do?" She asks. "What?" "Why did you hurt him?! WHAT DID YOU DO!" Athena screeches. Drews head snaps towards Leon who's suddenly has multiple stab wounds forming. Drews eyes widen in fear as the skeleton blade appears. A long dark body hand with sharp nails appear holding it. Drews breathing picks up as another hand appears by Leon's neck, squeezing, causing the neck to beging to crack and crunch.

Drew stares at the dark eyes staring back at him over Leon's shoulder. A wicked grin and grey skin, long curly horns. That's when a cruel laugh leaves the creature.

Drew screams as he jolts forward, he gasps and glances around his bedroom. Empty. Empty bedroom. "Leon? Leon!" He yells as he climbs out of bed. He's quick to run downstairs. "Morning dad" athena smiles from the dining room where the kids are eating. "Wheres your father?" Drew asks, sounding breathless. "Uh the study I believe he's painting." Athena tries recalling. "Yeah, asked if I could leave so he could focus. Said he had a dream or something." Ophelia shrugs around a mouth of cereal.

Drew rushes into the study. It wasn't really a study anymore, more of a art studio. The kids all liked drawing in it but the only people who got proper use from it was Ophelia and Leon. He pushes the door open to see Leon sat at a canvas painting. "Leon" he sighs. "Hey baby, didn't wanna wake you but I couldn't help it. Needed to paint this thing I saw in a dream last night. Thought this might help get it off my mind." Leon explains. Drew walks over and his heart stops.

The demon from his nightmare. "Um what was your dream?" Drew asks. "Its weird. We just spent the day together as if it was normal. As if we were friends." Leon chuckles. Leon puts the brush down, turning on his stool to face Drew. "Im sorry I left the bed. I know I normally don't I just needed this baby." Leon hums placing his hands on drews hips. Drew frowns as he cups Leon's face. "Thats alright..baby.." Drew mutters. "I love you" Leon whispers resting his head against drews chest. "I love you too." Drew promises as he hugs Leon close. He feels deep in his gut that this might be the last time for awhile. Drew squeezes his eyes shut as tears build and just rubs his thumb against the back of Leon's head.

"I love you.. "

Sheamus watches drew as he laces his boots. "You alright man? You seem..off..." sheamus asks. "Just been a long few weeks. With Leon's seizure, pressure from hunter about the tag belts and don't even get me started on H and Caspians school reports" drew sighs standing up. "How has he been?" Sheamus asks. Drew frowns and looks at their mutual friend.

Before he can answer, Leon strolls in. "Hey baby" Leon smiles as he walks over. Sheamus frowns as Leon kisses drews cheek. "Im going to be late home tonight. I've gotta talk business with hunter." Leon states. "Okay" drew nods. "Ill let the kids know" drew adds. "Good. Good" Leon nods. He looks at sheamus. "Looking good man" Leon smiles at him before walking off.

Drew sighs. What is he to do? No one wants to listen. He phoned taker this morning and taker stated he took a look and Leon is fine. Kane even looked. Drew needs so- "that's not Leon." Sheamus suddenly speaks up. Drews head snaps towards him. "What did you just say?" Drew questions facing him fully. "Thats not Leon. Leon would never call you baby for one, he hates that nickname unless it's towards an actual child or small animal. He would never stay late to speak to hunter. He never did for vince. If they needed to speak to him, they had to do it during the show or speak to him the next day. And finally, he's never nice to me. He never compliments me because he believes it will fill my weird obsession with him, but you and I both know it makes me try harder to try get him to be nice." Sheamus rambles.

Drews eyes widen. "Thank you" drew whispers hugging sheamus. "Thank you Sheamus" he pulls back. "It was him last night. But now? Now I'm not too sure" drew admits. "Ministry?" Sheamus asks. "Thats the issue...ministry would know these things. Its how he managed to hide last time. We never knew because he knows how Leon thinks and act." Drew admits. "Oh god..something new? No..that..that can't be good." Sheamus groans. "No. No it can't." Drew mutters looking back at the door.

Drew watches as Leon pulls his jacket and vest off. Drews eyebrows raise as he notices Athenas Cross is gone.

He glances at sheamus who also has noticed it.

Yeah. This isnt Leon.

Athena frowns as she walks into her bedroom. Her eyes immediately land on the cross dangling from her desk lamp. The cross that should be around her Papas neck.

She reaches forward and grabs it only for her breathe to be knocked out of her.

She gasps and stumbles back, her back hitting something..or someone.

She turns and stumbles back again at the sight.

"Its alright baby girl...I'm not here to hurt you" the raspy voice tries to soothe. Athena watches as the red haired woman kneels. Her skin burnt and ruined, but her hair? Her hair and her piercing green eyes are perfect. "W-who are you!" Athena barks holding out the cross. It doesn't do anything which throws her off. "Im Athena. Your great grandmother." She smiles. Athenas eyes widen. "Grandad takers mama?" Athena asks. "Yes sweetie. I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here to help you."

"Help me?"

"Help you."

"Help you save your Father."

Drew runs a hand over his face as he walks into the house. He pauses after the door shuts. For a house full of four children, it's awfully quiet. "Kids? Kids! I'm home!" Drew calls. "Shush!" Caspian barks from the kitchen. Drew furrows his brows as he walks towards the youngest. He stops in the doorway as he sees the kids sat around the table with candles, holding hands. Two of the kids holding hands to a empty space.

"What the hell?!" Drew barks flipping the lights on. The kids groan and protest at their dad. "We were trying to save papa! You've scared her off now!" Athena barks. "Im sorry what?!" Drew demands. "Great grandma! Athena can see her! She's like grandad taker, uncle kane and papa! She was helping us contact papa!" Ophelia explains as if it's obvious. Drews eyes widen.

No. No.

Athena was supposed to be normal. She wasn't supposed to be like Leon and taker.

Takers mother is like them?

Of course she is.

"Jesus" drew whispers. "You know that isn't papa! Why won't you help us?" Athena asks. "Its not that simple! That's why!" Drew snaps grabbing his phone. He pulls up takers number but pauses.

He glances at athena, she's staring at him with pleading eyes.

He quickly swaps to shawns number.

"Oh hey drew"

"Shawn..we have a problem. A purple problem."

"I know. I'm glad you finally called. I'll be over as soon as I can."

Drew looks at his phone as the man hangs up. "Of course. Can always rely on you Shawn." Drew whispers with a small smile. "Grandpa?" H asks. "Yeah-" "Grandpa sees things. He has done ever since he moved into the valley. Dad's also started seeing things since marrying papa. He believes there nightmares. There not." Athena explains to the youngers.

Drew pauses. How does she know that? "Grandma athena told me." Athena hums. Drew frowns. "Clean up kids. Grandpa is coming." Drew orders, moving to the table and blowing a candle out.

The lost and conflicted man cups his hands around the back of his head, arms covering his ears. He rocks back and forth trying to block the stupid song out.

A cold hand cups the back of his neck. "You must not give up now. We cannot let him win. Not anymore. Not now." The glitchy voice states. "Why? Why should I trust you?" "Because he betrayed me. He tricked and betrayed me. Its time to stop hiding in the shadows. It's time for me to seek revenge.-" "to stop being his bitch?"

"Exactly. Now get up."

Possible Triggers Ahead

BE WARNED

OK, they initially started college fresh out of high school and aimed for an Arts/Performing Arts degree. Taking Robotics/Eingineering as a minor.

Sadly they never finished their Arts major due to an incident resulting in an unwanted pregnancy. Having been female at birth and only about 6months into transition. However, they were allowed to take and submit their robotics course purely online.

Despite their initial thoughts, they followed through with the child and began raising them as they further their technological knowledge. Mostly working from home. Or the shabby place they called home.

Until they found and struck a deal with some practical special effects being needed. However they needed to venture for only a few days for a proper interview review.

While gone, this resulted in the death of their child. Marred by the building fire that took many away.

They devolved and drowned themselves in more work. Deeper knowledge. They obsessed with learning until they couldn't make heads or tales of all the contradictions. They became ill, frail. And they hated it.

Gradually turning to self inflicted chemical treatments and minor augmenting surguries to improve their rapidly deteriorating state. That is until they're found in the little studio office, pronounced dead, and had fully underwent the embalming procedure.

The odd concoction festering in their cells alongside the experimental bio-conducive circuitry running under their skin seemingly revived them while they were stuck waiting in cold storage.

Knowing full well they could not claim anything from their past legally, they began with a major appearance change and started somewhat anew.

Letting their starved curiosity and creativity eat away at themselves in their attempts at a business venture. And the growing longing for the hold of a child, corrupted by those ravenous ideas, has lead them out of self experiments and into psychological, general populous, anonymous, and the ever heinous human experiments. All in a way where they see it as "protecting the children"

After all, it wasn't JUST a fire... it was an uncaught Arsonist. And it seems this is a convoluted and very flawed view of self gratifying revenge.

Overall this guy is

A traumatized dad

Full of terrible jokes

Actually talented at stage acting

Knows how to live worse than a rat

Loves making kids smile

An innovator for biological integration in robotics (and vice versa)

Has odd Quirks pertaining to the results of his chemical experiments including "smelling the color of stories held in bones." No, he's not entirely sure what that means exactly either. It's an ongoing study.

An Aroace for the most part but has an odd atraction/obsession with gore, sadism, masochism, viscera, disection/vivisection, and primal/ferral violence.

Maybe still a bit mary-sue, but oh boy is this toned down.

Maybe they get hired to work on movie animatronics or sfx in costumes or staging. You could pull this in a fnaf au route. Heck I wouldn't mind seeing them go happy bonkers by trying to study/disect Cryptids. They truly believe that Magic is just unintentional interdimensional bridging experiments. And that dragons can be a modern or near future reality.

To Love Herself - Chapter 1: Appear

Synopsis: Following ACOSF until Nesta’s confrontation with Amren. Rather than going to hike and soul search with Cassian in the wild, Nesta uses her powers to disappear.

Hey! So I am going to write this fic. I have never posted anything I have written before so please let me know what you think or if you have any advice. Also let me know if you want to be tagged.

Prologue: Disappear

Chapter 1: Appear

Do you plan on coming home soon Feyre darling? 

Feyre sent a huff of a laugh back at Rhys. Why? Does somebody miss me? 

Two somebodies actually, Rhys replied. Nyx wants to show you how he has improved his flying with Uncle Azriel today. 

Feyre smiled at the image of her son jumping off couches to fly around the room played in her mind. She currently sat in her studio, working on a painting of Nyx flying with his father. She planned on saving it for his eighth birthday present in a couple months.

Feyre glanced out the window, where the streets were only illuminated by starlight on the moonless night. She hadn’t realized how late it had become.

I’ll be home soon, I just have to clean up. 

Don’t keep me waiting too long, Rhys rumbled back. A shiver went down Feyre’s spine as she cut off the connection with her mate to concentrate on cleaning. 

She walked around the room, turning off most of the lights before going to the back to wash her brushes and pallet. As she stood at the sink, she suddenly felt a cold breeze at the back of her neck. 

Feyre froze. She raised her head to look at the paint-splattered mirror above the sinks. Through the smudged glass, she could see a dark cloaked figure standing behind her. 

Slowly, Feyre turned. “Who are you?” She demanded. “It’s not wise to sneak up on a High Lady.”

The figure stood perfectly still. As they stared at each other the temperature in the room seemed to drop. Finally, the figure tilted their head to the side slightly. “Well? What do you want?” 

An indignant huff came from beneath the cloak before reaching up to pull back the hood. 

Feyre’s mind went blank as she took in her sister, whom she hadn’t seen or heard from in over 8 years. 

“Hello Feyre.” That was all Nesta said. 

Feyre stared at her older sister. Not a day had gone by since that terrible day in Amren’s apartment that Feyre hadn’t thought of Nesta. Not a day she hadn’t wondered, worried. They had searched for her. Had even reached out to the other courts when they became desperate for answers. But there had been no trace of her since Cassian had seen her consumed by silver flames. 

Now standing before her, the first thing Feyre noticed was how healthy she looked. Nesta had slowly begun to look better after living in the House and training with Cassian for a few weeks. She had been gaining a little weight and some color back then. 

But stepping into the light cast from lanterns on the back counter, Nesta seemed to glow with health. Her hair was braided in its classic crown, but her face was full and tanned from being in the sun. Her eyes still held the same stormy intensity they always had, but the haunted look she had had was now replaced with a silver gleam. 

Although most of her body was covered in a dark cloak, Feyre could see she was wearing fighting leathers— not Illyarian leathers. And peaking out over her right shoulder was the pommel of a great sword. The Great Sword, the one she had accidentally Made. The sword that, along with the two other Made weapons, had been stolen from where they had been locked in the river house. The same night several priestesses disappeared from the Library as well.

That had been nearly a year after Nesta. They had all suspected Neata, as later it was found that the last time Emerie had been seen in Windhaven was that day. But they had never been sure. All that was left of the priestesses was a note to Clotho not to worry, that they had left by choice. 

“Nyx is growing up fast."

Nesta was still staring back at Feyre, but as she continued to blink at Nesta, Nesta nodded towards the painting on the easel. Her face was impassive as she said “He looks like he is a handful.” 

Nesta’s words caused Feyre to snap her mouth shut, which had been hanging open. “What? Nesta… where…how...why...” Silence filled the room as Feyre trailed off. Nesta continued to stand with that preternatural Fae stillness, but she seemed to be considering Feyre now. 

“I came here with a warning for you and your court”, Nesta finally said. 

Again, Feyre felt her mouth fall open as she stammered “Excuse me?”

Nesta let out a bored sigh as she moved to the cart next to Feyre’s easel and picked up a paintbrush to examine.

“I am sure you have many questions, but I only came here because there are some things you as the High Lady of the Night Court should know. There is a movement growing on the continent threatening Prynthia. I don’t believe the ruling powers of Montesere and Vallahan are involved, especially with the peace treaties you have established with them, but there may be some within those territories that support it. The majority of this group has been operating in the Wild Lands of the Faerie Realms on the continent. What I do know is that those involved with this movement believe there is a way to steal the power of Prynthia’s courts. They say the ruling High Fae power’s here come from a physical source in this land, and if found, they can take it for themselves.” Nesta twirled the paintbrush in her hand as she turned to face Feyre again. “This group has been trying to subtly infiltrate Prynthia’s courts, and we believe they have gained a source within the the Illyarians.” Nesta said all this deadpanned, returning to staring at Feyre with a blank face as she finished speaking. 

Feyre’s anger came hot and fast. “Are you kidding me Nesta? What are in the Cauldron are you talking about!” 

Nesta simply raised an eyebrow at Feyre’s outburst. “Which part of what I said was unclear? You and your court need to look into dissent among the Illyarians.” 

Feyre let out a disbelieving laugh, “It’s been 8 years, Nesta!” 

“Yes.”

“Eight years since you disappeared without a trace and now you come back and the first thing you tell me is this? With no explanation as to where you have been? What you have been doing? Seriously? That’s all you have to say after you ran away, never contacted your family, but apparently returned to steal weapons?” Feyre gestured to the sword on Nesta’s back. 

Nesta examined the paintbrush in her hand, but said cooly “Since I created the weapons, it wasn’t stealing.” She looked up to Feyre, eyes chips of ice. “The what and where I have been are a long story. I only came to warn you.”

Silence once again filled the dim room.

“Why should I believe you?” Feyre asked, defeated. 

It was Nesta’s turn to ask “What?”

“Why should I believe you,” Feyre repeated, “when you have done nothing to show that I can trust you?” 

Nesta’s infuriating nonchalantness finally slipped a little, and Feyre felt a flash of anger. However, her voice was calm as she responded. “For all our history Feyre, did I ever lie to you, or do anything to make you think I wished harm on you?”

Feyre opened her mouth to respond “no”, but stopped herself. Looking at the Nesta before her, she didn’t know who this person was. 

After a moment she said, “I don’t know.” 

It was quick, but Feyre saw something flash in Nesta’s stormy eyes before her face was once again a mask of cool indifference. 

“Okay then.” Nesta turned to return the paintbrush she still held to its proper place. “As I am sure the rest of your court will also need convincing, I can show you proof if you can meet me on the Obsidian Isles in the East Sea of the Night Court in two days. Noon, on the Northernmost island. 

Feyre was really tired of saying this, but “What?”

Nesta let out an annoyed sigh as she clasped her hands together in front of her and said plainly “Bring your mate and court and meet me in two days to prove to you all I told you was the truth. Is that acceptable to you?” 

Feyre nodded. 

“Good. See you in two days.” With that, Nesta turned on her heels and stalked to the door.

Yet Nesta paused with her hand on the doorknob. For the first time since being in the room, Nesta seemed to waiver. She didn’t move, staring straight at the door. 

“How is he?” She finally asked. It was barely audible, barely more than a whisper as if she was afraid to say it too loud. But it was the one thing Feyre didn’t need to ask what she meant. 

“He searched for you,” There was too much, and not enough to be said.

Nesta turned her head, hand still on the knob, not to look back at Feyre but to stare at the wall to her left. 

“He will come with you to the island.” Feyre couldn’t tell if that was a question or order. 

Either way, Feyre said “Yes.” Even though she didn’t know if he actually would. Feyre didn’t know how he would react to any of this. 

Nesta stood still for a second, before nodding and pushing open the door. She didn’t say another word as she pulled up her hood, stepped out, and vanished into the night. 

Feyre didn’t know how long she stood there, staring out the open door into the dark. It was only when she felt an invisible weight lift off her shoulders, that she realized that the entire time she had been talking to Nesta, she hadn’t been able to feel her bond with Rhys.

A/N: requested by @bandart101 – thank you! As we all know, JYP’s dating ban would literally make this scene very difficult in real life so thank goodness for fiction, right? Heh. I had a lot of fun writing this piece and so I hope you all enjoy the playful vibe of it as well!

Word count: 3217

As a JYP trainee, you were so close to debut, you could smell it. And the preparation for your debut was well under way. You were in an endless cycle of dance, vocal and variety training every day, and you had seen more of the practice room than you had of any other place in the past three years. You had worked hard and knew you were ready for your big moment.

Yet you hadn’t been prepared for starting out this way exactly.

“We’ll be introducing each member every Tuesday and Thursday and then when individual teasers are completed, we’ll roll out with the group teasers. We’ve decided to introduce you in a way that will draw further attention to your impending debut and prepare you for your first proper stage at JYP Nation.”

“Oh my god, really?!” Mei exclaimed beside you and squealed with glee. “We’re going to JYP Nation!”

Your project manager shared a wistful smile before continuing. “To get there though, it’s not going to be easy. We don’t have a lot of time and your partners for your teasers are even busier than you all are with your constant training. You will have limited time to practice with your partners and it will be your final challenge. Those who cannot keep up with the workload will be held back from debuting so put your everything into it.”

You nodded determinedly, curious of who your partner would be. It obviously wasn’t someone in this room due to the wording your team leader had used. Could it be a talented choreographer? Although you weren’t the strongest in dancing, as rapping was your forte, you had been working really hard at improving. Or would you all be paired with someone to bring out your strengths? You grew excited then, the mere idea that you would be introduced to the public through this unit was giddying.

“Who are our partners?” Chaerin asked and you waited in anticipation. The project manager was trying not to let her smile grow. She gestured to a container she had brought into the practice room with her.

“You will be given a private practice room number and inside that room, you’ll find out all about your project unit. Understood?” Everyone nodded in unison and waited for her to hand them a small tag with a number on it. You took yours and found you were in room seven. It was one of your favourite numbers and you grinned as you went over to collect your things and head out of the room. The whole way to your allocated studio you thought over how clever this idea was. You would be pushed to show more of yourself, and that suited you just fine. Working with someone who wasn’t already a part of your trainee team would definitely be a challenge. You would need to learn how to collaborate well with whoever you were assigned to which would only make you a better performer in the end.

When you arrived at the studio, the lights were out. You frowned at the empty space, turning on the lights and placed your things down before stretching. You figured you would be dancing again soon and wanted your limbs to be warm. You were letting your upper body hang towards your toes, feeling a slight burn with the stretch when you heard the door open behind you. Looking between your legs, you notice a set of familiar boots had walked into the room and then a chuckle left the person wearing them.

“Well, this isn’t the greeting I expected,” he mused and you snapped upright, wincing when your head spun from moving too fast. Your eyes widened as he approached you, looking a little shocked. “Are you alright? You shouldn’t move that fast.”

Oh yes, this concept was too perfect in theory. But as BamBam from GOT7 stood in front of you, his eyes wide with concern and a hand half reaching towards you, you realised just how dangerous this mission would be for you now.

BamBam’s hand fell to his side awkwardly yet he smiled warmly at you. “Y/N, right?”

You tried to talk but your mouth wouldn’t cooperate so you nodded your head.

“You know, I’ve heard your rapping skills before and yet you haven’t said a word to me. Cat got your tongue?” he teased and your cheeks flared crimson. He chuckled. “This shy act isn’t going to work if you want to become an idol, Y/N. Especially to another idol as we need to be able to communicate. I get it though; I’ve had some moments in my career where I’ve been stunned by another person too. But I’m honestly just like you. There’s nothing to be too overwhelmed by, I promise. Today I’ll let you away with it but tomorrow I expect you to be able to talk to me. After all, we’re going to do a rap together. Here is the song. I’ve sectioned off the part that will be for the teaser video so practice that part first.”

You took the lyrics sheet from him shakily and BamBam smirked before he went over to the computer in the corner and opened up a track. He turned to face you and smiled brightly. “Practice for as long as you need to. I’ll see you tomorrow, and with your voice in tow, okay?”

You had barely slept the night before; restless with the knowledge that today you would be spending several hours with BamBam. The thought of working with established JYP idols hadn’t once crossed your mind yesterday and even if it had, you would have never believed yourself as lucky enough to end up with BamBam. Not only was he from your favourite idol group as GOT7 was the reason you had auditioned for JYP in the first place, but he was also someone you had hung posters over your walls back at home of. You were embarrassed to think you had once suffered from an intense fangirl stage before training to become an idol, and now you would be working alongside him intimately.

Just thinking that it’ll be you and BamBam in the room alone today had you hyperventilating on the car ride into practice. Your other members were ecstatic with their partners; some were working with Twice or Stray Kids members and others had also landed a duet with another GOT7 member. As soon as you announced who you had been paired up with, the whole group fell silent.

“Will you be okay?”

“This will be a test of strength for you. If you can overcome working with your bias, then you can do anything!”

“Guys it’s really not that big of a deal. Y/N is a professional.”

“A clumsy one though.”

“You’re right, what if you fall over in front of him?! You’re doomed.”

And so you went into practice room number seven with dread filling you completely. You had never felt this concerned before within a practice room and you had faced a lot of obstacles along your trainee journey so far.

Entering the room, you flinched when you found BamBam already in there. He wasn’t as dressed up today, which you couldn’t decide if it was a blessing or a curse. You quickly diverted your eyes and hurried to place down your things. BamBam was watching you curiously when you finally glanced up into the mirrored wall. You blinked rapidly and then bowed in greeting. “Good morning.”

“Ah, you have a voice after all,” he teased with a laugh and then handed you a microphone. “It’s not plugged in but I want to see what you turn into when you’re performing.”

“What I turn into?” you asked softly and BamBam didn’t respond, instead he went over to the sound system and turned it on. He then took a seat on the couch along the wall, watching you from the mirrors. You turned to face them and closed your eyes.

It didn’t matter if BamBam was a weakness of yours or not. With your hand firmly wrapped around the microphone, you listened for your cue in the song and immediately began to perform. After a few lines, you even opened your eyes, staring at your reflection confidently. Your energy increased and you delivered your rap strongly.

You wanted to debut no matter what.

Tempo’s Microsoft Kinect-esque motion sensors scan you 30 times per second and notify you if your form is wrong. It’s all housed in a sleekly designed free-standing cabinet that neatly stores the included barbells, dumbbells, attachable weights, workout mat, recovery foam roller, and heartrate monitor.

Tempo opens for pre-orders today for $1995, requiring a $250 deposit and $39 monthly content subscription before shipping this summer.

“Every single product in the market took a piece of equipment out of a gym and slapped a screen on it” says Tempo CEO and co-founder Moawia Eldeeb. “You need to be able to see a user to actually be able to give them guidance so they can work out safely. We wanted to build a fitness experience from the ground up with training and form feedback at the core of it.”

I demo’d Tempo this week and found the in-home convenience, motivational on-screen personal trainers, and the real-time posture corrections gave me the confidence to lift weights without the fear of injury. It might not feel quite as fun and addictive as Peloton, but it offers a facsimile of personal training that’s more affordable than in-person classes that cost $100 or more.

The idea of democratizing access to trainers is what convinced Eldeeb and the Tempo team to stretch its initial $1.8 million in seed funding for four years. While collecting data from its SmartSpot in-gym weight lifting assessment device, Tempo survived long enough to build this prototype.

“Most investors had given up on us. We built this product and had just $700,000 left” Eldeeb recalls. But once people could try Tempo, “we pitched 10 investors and got 9 term sheets. It got very competitive.” The startup recently walked away with a $17.5 million Series A round from Founders Fund, DCM, and Khosla Ventures. Now Tempo will pour that cash into marketing, retail distribution, R&D, and content production.

A founder’s journey out of homelessness

Tempo’s mission is to change people’s lives for the better like personal training did for Eldeeb. “Training is what took me out of a homeless shelter and got me to where I am I today” he reflects.

Eldeeb’s family immigrated to the US from Egypt when he was nine. But after an explosion leveled their building, they wound up in a homeless shelter. Eldeeb eventually dropped out of middle school to work in a pizza parlor and help pay the bills. But personal trainers at a local YMCA took him under their wing. He eventually paid his way through a computer science degree at Columbia University by working as a personal trainer to his eventual co-founder and CTO Josh Augustin. “Having trainers say you’re getting stronger taught me I could do something for myself.”

While at school, Eldeeb was developing an idea for a physical therapy wearable while Augustin was building 3D sensors for guiding robot perception. They soon realized that a combination of these ideas “offered us the possibility to deliver on the promise of guiding your form and tracking your progress accurately.”

In 2015, they started a company called Pivot to build SmartSpot — a similar looking upright screen that was designed for gyms. It could track users, but only output raw data about their form, like how bent a user’s knees were during a squat. It then worked with trainers to annotate the data to determine what movement patterns were safe and which were dangerous.

Gym owners bought in because it let them track which trainers were actually helping customers improve. “It held trainers accountable. If you weren’t delivering results, it’d be obvious” Eldeeb tells me. The company built up a dataset of over from over 1 million 3D tagged workouts, from hundreds of gyms, overseen by thousands of trainers. That formed the basis of the artificial intelligence that would let Pivot pivot into Tempo.

Pumping Iron With Tempo

At first, Tempo’s giant screen and black or white armoire can feel a bit daunting. The thing is about six feet tall, though it only takes up as much room as a large chair. It makes efficient use of space, with the barbell and dumbbells racked on the back, an internal shelf for the foam roller and mat, and a soft-closing cabinet on the front with the rubber-coated weight set. Keeping everything together means you won’t have to go digging in your closet to start a work out.

Tempo walks users through an initial computer-vision fitness assessment to understand your strength and flexibility so it can set base levels for its exercises. If you have an injury it needs to nurse, Tempo connects you to a human personal trainer that helps customize your workout plan. Otherwise, it uses your goals and data to set out a progressive regimen that gets a little tougher each day. It even blocks you from jumping into later classes so you don’t strain yourself.

Your workout plan begins with tutorial sessions that teach you to do the exercises with safe and proper form. When I was hunching forward during my squats, Tempo’s computer vision would ding me with instant feedback to keep my knees back and chest up. Then once I’d corrected the issue, it congratulated me with little green checkmarks. “Any product that doesn’t offer that is no better than a DVD or YouTube videos” Eldeeb remarks.

From there I could choose between a variety of class styles and lengths, ranging from high intensity interval training circuits to isolated sessions focused on particular muscle groups. In each, you watch a near life-size personal trainer doing the routines right in front of you while they demonstrate form and drop inspirational quotes.

Tempo is producing seven live classes per day from its San Francisco studio which you can also watch on-demand. You can compete against friends or strangers, and Tempo compares you rep for rep so it’s more about perfect form than reckless speed or weight. The live trainers can actually see all your data and your mistakes on a dashboard as they lead classes, and can call you out for screwing up (though you can deactivate this shame mode). Eldeeb says “knowing the trainer can possibly see your numbers will motivate you to actually do this right.”

The class selection interface is suspiciously similar to Peloton’s, though that at least will make it familiar for some. Over time, you build up an immense collection of data on your performance in each work out, excercise, and muscle. Unlike hitting the gym by yourself, you’ll never struggle to remember how much weight to use or whether you’re improving. Classes are soundtracked with dancey remixes sourced from a partnership with Feed.fm to avoid the royalty issues with original songs that slapped Peloton.

Tempo gives feedback when you’re doing exercises wrong, and when you correct yourself

For a 14-person startup, Tempo is trying to do a ton and that can leave some rough edges. The bluetooth armband heartrate monitor can have connectivity issues and the computer vision doesn’t always register every rep, especially if your posture is off. Classes also fail to include enough stretching to prevent strains, instead devoting the start of classes to warmups that ease you in but might not protect your muscles well enough. My quads were destroyed after my demo.

Tempo still achieves its primary objective: it makes weight lifting accessible. No need to drag yourself to the gym or be beholden to a trainer’s schedule, where I’d always end up arriving late and wasting 25% of my session. The form feedback fixes my core complaint about remote personal training app Future I’ve been using for nine months, which can’t see you. That’s led to minor injuries from bad sit-up posture and other incorrect movements. Tempo can’t catch everything, but it can nip some of the most common mistakes in the bud.

Eldeeb was blunt when asked why Tempo is better than well-funded competitors like $3000 Tonal’s wall-mounted resistance cable-based training system or the $1500 Mirror’s massive screen.

“The biggest problem with Tonal is two-fold. Cables and motors do not last. I want this product to be in your house for 10-plus years. [Tempo] is in gyms running 24/7 in for 3 years and it’s still working. The second biggest thing is just feedback.” While Tonal does include a camera and microphone it might employ in the future, it’s not scanning you to detect when you’re lifting weights crooked like Tempo.

As for Mirror, “What is the difference between ClassPass Live and Mirror? It doesn’t come with any equipment, and there’s no training. It’s just a two-way mirror and a Samsung LED panel behind it with an arduino board” Eldeeb rails. He claims it can’t actually monitor your workouts and that his team’s tests found Mirror would say they’d burned 500 calories when they were literally just sitting on their couch in front of it.

If the software proves to have high retention so people actually recommend Tempo to friends, the biggest hurdle will be its price. You can buy a couple dumbbells for $50 or get a barbell weight bench for a few hundred. Even if Tempo’s $55 per month financing option plus $39 subscription makes it cheaper than a single personal training session or on-par with a gym membership, it could still seem like a serious commitment.

That feeling is magnified by how all of its equipment and classes and data can feel a bit overwhelming. The startup might have to spend a fortune on retail establishments that can guide users through their first Tempo experience. There’s also no mobile version yet, so you can’t bring the work outs on the road with you.

Eldeeb seems guinely motivated to keep improving the product so it’s better than commuting to work out. “Getting to the gym or class is often half the battle. By bringing the gym to you and structuring the classes to be as efficient as possible, Tempo not only makes improving your health more convenient, but it gives you back your most precious resource: time.”

For those comfortable lifting the cheap weights they have at home or hitting up a budget gym, Tempo might seem needlessly overwrought and expensive. But for anyone who needs more instruction or wants to get a Barry’s Bootcamp-worthy workout at home, Tempo might be just their speed.
