Abandoned WIP

Warstan (but John got killed off before the story starts) and purely platonic Sherlock & Mary. Quite AU... John and Mary get together before Sherlock jumped off of Bart’s. Maybe a little bit of hinted unrequited Johnlock, I honestly can’t remember if I was going there with this fic. A “Mary is the new Watson” retelling of “The Adventure of the Empty House,” rated T. This was written before S3 happened and I fell in love with BBC Mary and she actually made me view BBC John as an interesting character in his own right and I rejiggered my alignments.

I’m going to rant here, just briefly, about how ACD’s Mary Morstan is probably one of the most wronged-by-their-author characters that I can think of, which is why I started writing this fic where she takes the lead.

She appears for the first time in the second-ever (authorially, not chronologically) Sherlock Holmes story, “The Sign of the Four,” and is delightful. Watson falls hard in love right away and acts like a huge dweeb about her, she’s courageous, clever, and kind. Maybe without all the panache of the later Irene Adler, but a more traditionally Victorian heroine for our more traditionally Victorian junior protagonist. Her next appearance, “The Adventure of the Crooked Man,” is significantly more tangential, but she sets the action of the story in play and is shown to be a helpful, kind figure.

And then all of a sudden Conan Doyle ships her off to visit her mother (she was established as an orphan), stops using her at all, and finally kills her off.

Not even on the page. Between books. And it’s mentioned so tangentially in two lines of “The Adventure of the Empty House” that you can easily miss it if you aren’t looking for it.

(Incidentally this sort of shit is why ACD fandom can’t agree on how many wives Watson had or who the subject of his “sad bereavement” is. The number ranges from 1-13.)

Why, Artie? Why did you do that? I mean I get if you want to park Watson back at Baker Street you probably do have to off her but you were a fairly good hack and doing it this way made you give up the opportunity to have some sort of emotional payoff in your stories. Especially since you later introduce another wife character who is in no way distinct from Mary (a niche component of ACD fandom thinks that Mary didn’t die at all and Watson “abandoning (Holmes) for a wife,” was him and Mary reconciling after an estrangement.)

Anyway. Don’t create cool characters and then kill them for no good reason. That’s my point.

The Empty Flat (Mary)

I had been widowed for three months and was rather surprised at how badly I was doing with it. The snug three-bedroom garden flat in Maida Vale had been the perfect size for a not-quite-young couple planning on children. Now it seemed vast and empty and utterly, utterly silent. When I slept, which wasn’t all that much, I did it on the sofa. Our bed still smelled faintly of his aftershave, and I couldn’t stand either to sleep there or to wash the sheets. Arthur, the blue point Siamese cat who I had bought into the marriage, would curl up on my feet and awaken me with his yowls in the morning.

To some extent I had been able to occupy my mind with work, and the requirements of my job had kept me more or less a functional adult. But the summer holidays had begun a week previous, and I was thus thrown entirely on my own resources, which were scant. What family I had left were all back in America, and the friends I had made in England seemed to have melted away since John’s death. Some days, I thought that this was due to the universal impulse to avoid reminders of mortality. Other days I decided it was more likely due to the fact that I deleted their emails and declined to answer their phone calls.

The truth, as always, was probably somewhere in the middle.

Whatever the cause, my life was empty. I ate when I remembered that I was meant to. I wore pajamas all day. I left the flat when I ran out of cat food, and at night I would turn on the tv and stare at it without paying attention until I finally sank into oblivion.

Presumably it was on one of those descents into the maelstrom of crap British late-night TV that I first took note of the murder of Ronald Adair. The dead man was vaguely familiar to me, though I had never watched any of his shows personally. He was a scion of one of those impoverished but very old-and-noble families that the English keep on out of sentiment. Showing unusual initiative for one of his class, he’d made a success of himself by appearing on a famous reality show, then on the “celebrity” version of that show, and parlaying that into one of those mysterious but apparently quite lucrative careers that consist mostly of having your picture taken.

And now, he was dead, shot in the back of the head in his own bedroom on Park Lane.

The story struck me, for some reason. John, when he’d been alive, used to take four daily papers and half a dozen weeklies, and I had not cancelled them yet. I plucked a week’s worth out of the recycling where I had tossed them, unread, and scanned through them for articles about the murder.

Ronald Adair had been alone in his bedroom, drinking neat whiskey and updating twitter, when he died. His last tweet (@JustLukeyA, “LOL C U @ Ibiza”) had been sent at 10:11 in the evening. His personal assistant had heard the sound of breaking glass, broken down the locked door that led into the bedroom, seen his body, and dialed 999 by 10:17. The bullet had been a large caliber hollow point round that had done severe damage to the back of his skull, and he had most likely died almost instantly.

The entire affair was mysterious. While the police hadn’t released any real statements, the personal assistant had been the only other person in the house at the time of the shooting, and had been released after questioning. This would suggest the shot had been fired from outside, but the window in Adair’s bedroom, while open, was on the fourth floor. There was no evidence to suggest anyone had climbed to the window, meaning that the shot had come from somewhere outside.

This made no sense at all to the gossip rags. The window faced directly over Hyde Park, and any level shot would have had to come from over a mile away. And shooting from ground level would have been impossible: the Park was open, reasonably crowded given the warmth of the summer evening, and no one had heard a thing. The American embassy was less than two hundred yards away, and even its overblown security hadn’t noted any unusual activity. Essentially, it was impossible that he could have been shot, and yet there he was.

As I read through the papers, I thought how John would have gone through them at the breakfast table to try and figure out what had happened. Although his professional interest in solving mysteries had died with Sherlock, he never lost his fascination with the more arcane sorts of crime. He would have loved this one, and I could imagine the crinkles that would form around his eyes as he would describe the possible motives, mechanisms, and solutions. It was a Sunday, and I suspected that he would have wheedled me into taking our normal long walk in the direction of the crime scene. I’d have teased him, said he was morbid, but I’d have gone, and he’d have hypothesized happily for a while.

I could so clearly imagine it, and it made me smile, despite myself. It had been difficult to like Sherlock Holmes, and very difficult to deal with the fact that their association put John into danger on a regular basis. Yet, now that they were both gone, I found myself forgiving every thoughtless insult and sleepless lonely night the detective ever gave me, since he had made John so happy.

Wishing to hang on to my happy memory, I decided, abruptly, to take the walk over to Park Lane myself, just as John and I would have done. It was past time I actually started doing things again. I would go and see where Ronald Adair had died, and I would try and solve the mystery, and I would remember John. Quickly, before I could change my mind, I showered, dressed, and left the flat.

July, in London, is one of the few times of the year when it approaches being warm enough, and it was a beautiful day. I took the long route around Kensington Park, since a straight shot would have taken me directly past St. Mary’s Hospital, where John had worked - and where his body had been taken. The trees were brilliant green, and it seemed everyone in London was sunbathing or playing football or falling in love around me.

Ronald Adair’s flat was adjacent to the Mariott, in one of the converted brick Georgian edifices that infest all of Park Lane. I had forgotten to take note of the number, but it was easily identifiable by the flowers and stuffed animals heaped up on the low fence that surrounded it. There were a fair number of gawkers, and by asking, I found which window Adair had been shot through. I was stumped, for the moment, but thinking logically, decided the best route was to see from where I could have made the shot. The busy street and the shrubbery borders of the park being ruled out, necessarily, I confined my attention to the sidewalks. I took pictures on my phone, and paced around, and tried to work out the trigonometry involved.

Then I stopped. There were half a dozen locations from which the shot could have come. It would be the hell of a task: the window was small and high, but if it were dark out and the shooter were aiming into a lit room, it would be possible. I had hunted a lot as a kid, and might have been able to make it with a rifle. John, who had been an excellent marksman, might have been able to do it with a handgun. But to do it quickly enough to avoid notice in a busy neighborhood, to do it silently? That was impossible.

All facts that were undoubtedly obvious to the police. If John had been with me, it would have been a fun little mathematical exercise. We’d have followed it with a walk home, dinner at the pub on the end of our street, and making tipsy love in the light of a summer sunset in our flat. But he wasn’t with me, and he never would be again, and the day would end as all days did, alone with the cat and the television and the dark. The whole thing was a pointless, futile exercise - a little girl’s attempt to play make-believe.

I knew, suddenly, that I was going to cry. It happened a lot, and it wasn’t an experience I wanted to share with all London, so I spun around to depart and slammed full-force into a souvenir hawker who had been just behind me. Grace has always eluded me. The pole she carried, hung with ballcaps and other tat, fell to the ground, and she gave an indignant Cockney squawk of “Oi! Watch it!” I bent to retrieve her pole and handed it back to her, mumbling, “Sorry, sorry,” and fled outright into the park, keeping my eyes firmly on the ground.

Leaving the path, I hurried through the park, not really aware of where I was going as long as it was quieter and emptier. I reached a dim copse free of children, tourists, and lovers, where I sat down, and let the tears flow.

It’s easy to see why the ancient Egyptians thought that the heart, and not the brain, was the source of love. True sadness isn’t felt in the head, it’s felt in the chest, and I could feel every choked beat of my heart as I sobbed and gasped and tried to catch my breath for what seemed like ages. But from a pragmatic point of view, I’m sure I didn’t go for long. Crying is too tiring to keep up for much time. Of course, I had come out without any tissues, so I wiped my aching eyes and puffy face on the corner of my cardigan.

At that moment, the hawker walked into the copse.

“There you are!” she called out, “Wondered where you’d got to!”

I sighed. “Look,” I said, “I’m sorry about knocking into you. It was an accident. If I’ve damaged anything I will be happy to pay-“

“Na, na, love. Just a load of rubbish. Can’t hurt it if it isn’t worth anything to start with. But I saw your face and thought you might be in some trouble.” The woman was elderly, with a mop of dyed auburn hair and a thick Docklands accent which I would love to render in text, if it didn’t look so silly. But her blue eyes were kind, and she handed me a miniature water bottle marked with “Souvenir of Hyde Park.”

“I’m – fine. I just got a little upset. Thank you.” The water was lukewarm and tasted faintly of plasticizers, but it soothed my irritated throat.

The woman seemed to take this remark as an invitation, and placing her wares on the grass, sat next to me. I have lived in London since I was twenty-five years old and I could tell what was coming. There are two main personality types among the English: the type that is intensely uncomfortable with any sort of emotion, and the type that delights in every possible expression of sentiment and wishes to hear all about it. They’re like New Yorkers in that respect.

Apparently I had found one of the latter variant.

“You get to see a bit of everything, my line of work,” she said, digging a battered packet of Silk Cut out of her pocket, “Care for one?”

I had officially quit smoking years ago, when I finished my doctorate, and stopped even having the occasional one when I started dating John, since he loathed the things. Just at that moment, though, it sounded like heaven. “Yes, thank you.”

She shook two out of the packet, and passed one to me before getting out a transparent plastic lighter. She lit hers, and then handed over the lighter. A brief breeze kicked up, and I bowed my head over the tiny flame, trying to make the cigarette catch, as she said, quietly, “Now, Mary, you need to remain calm.”

The cigarette caught, and I took that first delicious, poisonous drag, before the fact that this stranger knew my name really filtered into my mind.

I looked over, and where the woman had been, sat Sherlock Holmes.

The Sign of Four (Sherlock)

The art of disguise, as I have often remarked, is in context far more than it is in costume. Truly approximating the appearance of someone else is only possible from a distance: in ordinary situations major alterations to the face appear theatrical and attract more attention than not. If, instead, you select a character who would be entirely appropriate in the context in which he appears, you need make only minor changes to your own appearance. The observer’s mind will then do ninety per cent of your work and you will be de facto invisible. I intend to write a monograph on the topic when I have the time.

Mary Morstan may have had some subconscious understanding of this. On the occasion of our first meeting, I observed that she was wearing a carefully calibrated disguise, although I doubt she would have referred to it as such. Very high heels, but an intentionally prim and boxy suit, severe makeup and hairstyle, heavy-framed glasses. She introduced herself with a flat, middle-American accent, only slightly sharpened by years of living in London.

Just after she arrived, John walked into the flat, his arms filled with carrier bags of groceries, which he set down with great rapidity in order to shake her hand.

“Mary Morstan, my associate, John Watson. Miss Morstan,” I said, “Teaches maths at Westminster School.”

She stared at me when I said that. John, I noted, didn’t let go of her hand when her attention was distracted.

“How do you know that?” she asked.

I sighed, though in truth I always enjoy it when they ask for the reasoning.

“You’ve obviously come straight from work, meaning that you work Saturday mornings. Chalk dust on the right cuff, which is worn in a way that you only ever see with people who spend a great deal of time writing on blackboards. There are traces of red ink on the heel of your hand and a splotch near the tip of your index finger. Thus, teacher.”

As I’d expected, she dropped John’s hand to examine her own.

“You took the tube to get here, and in those shoes you probably didn’t walk far before you boarded at Westminster station: there’s construction digging up the street there and the fresh splashes of yellowish mud on your left stocking are quite distinctive. Half a dozen schools in that area, but your ensemble suggests older students and moneyed parents. Hence, Westminster School.”

The last was a gloss, as her ensemble suggested nothing of the sort. It said quite plainly “I teach older boys.” Her skirt was unfashionably long, her blouse was buttoned up to the neck, and her jacket was boxy in order to conceal her rather large breasts. Having attended an all-boys senior school, I recognized the style, and the motivation behind it. But since I was undoubtedly going to receive the ”abrasive” and “show-off” lectures after her departure, I saw no reason to add the “inappropriate” one, and simplified the matter.

“And… maths?”

I sighed again, this time sincerely. The easy ones are never any fun.

“There’s a graphics calculator in the right pocket of your overcoat.”

At that, she laughed. Giggled, really. But almost instantly, she caught herself, cleared her throat, and dropped back into the lower vocal register that she had previously affected. Everything I could ever have wished to know about Mary Morstan’s character was thus revealed in the first five minutes of our interview. Nature had given her a respectable brain and deposited it in a body that was small, blonde, and rather fluffy. Her disguise did a reasonable job of concealing this, but she would spend the rest of her life trying to make people take her seriously.

“That’s amazing,” she said, “I read in your blog, Doctor Watson-“

“John, please,” he interrupted. Oh dear.

“John. I read about this kind of analysis but it’s remarkable to see it in real life.”

“Can be a bit creepy if you’re not used to it, though,” John replied, which I thought extremely unfair, given that I had been very polite and not mentioned that her teeth demonstrated her adolescent bulimia or that her fingers and eyebrows strongly implied a mild obsessive-compulsive condition. I maintained my dignity, and said only,

“Thank you, John. State your case, Miss Morstan.”

“Right. Well. I suppose I have to go back to the beginning. My father, Thomas Morstan, was English. I was actually born in Sussex, but when I was two my parents divorced and my mother and I moved back to America. I never got to see him much, growing up, but he always kept in touch, by phone and letters, and then by email when that came around. Sent birthday gifts and that sort of thing. Ten years ago I finished grad school, and he offered to buy me a ticket to come and meet him in London. I hadn’t seen him for several years at that point and I didn’t have a job so, obviously, I said yes.”

“Mmm. Continue.”

“He’d booked us rooms at the Langham, which I thought was much too expensive for him, but he said it was a treat for my graduation.”

“What was his profession, then?”

“He started off in the Army, but he resigned his commission after the first Gulf War and joined the diplomatic service.”

“As?”

“An attaché. Just an office job, basically. Visas and helping distressed tourists and so on.”

“And his rank in the army?”

“Ah, he ended as a Lieutenant Colonel, I believe.

“Go on.”

“I flew to London, expecting him to pick me up at Heathrow, but he wasn’t there. No answer when I tried to call him. I took a cab to the Langham and asked if he’d checked in, and he had, but there was no answer when they called up to his room. Eventually they agreed to open the door – he’d had a heart attack a few years before, and I was getting very upset - and all of his things were in there, but no sign of him. I never saw him again.”

“Interesting. Did the police investigate?” John was patting her shoulder, sympathetically, which seemed excessive given that the death (and yes, it was death, almost certainly) was ten years in the past. She should have been well beyond it by this point. But upon closer observation, I could see that he was right: a slight swimminess around the eyes and the set of the jawbone indicating gritted teeth. Oedipal complex. She replied, calmly enough.

“Yes. They didn’t find anything.”

“Of course they didn’t. They never do. Did your father have any acquaintances in London?”

“Only one that they could find: a Major Sholto. He had no idea Dad was even in town.”

“Mmm. I doubt a disappearance ten years ago would incline you to seek the services of a consulting detective today. What has changed?”

Morstan cleared her throat and opened the battered leather attache case that had been sitting at her feet. From a manila folder, she removed a broadsheet page of yellowing newsprint, with a quarter-page sized advertisement in the upper right hand corner circled in red ink. The paper was the Omaha World-Herald, the date was May 4, 2004, and the advertisement simply stated:

“If Mary Morstan, daughter of Captain Thomas Morstan, will contact the address below, it will be to her advantage” followed by an email address.

“Half a dozen of my friends from high school saw this and forwarded it on to me.”

“And what did you do?”

“I sent them an email. I said I was Thomas Morstan’s daughter, that I’d relocated to London, and asked what they wanted.”

“Any reply?”

“No. And when I sent on a follow-up a few days later, it bounced. It was just Hotmail… could have been anyone. But then a few days after that, I received this in the mail.”

Reaching back into the attaché case, she pulled out a small pouch made of black jeweler’s felt. Loosening the drawstring, she tipped something small and square into her palm, and passed it over to me.

I could hear John inhale sharply through is teeth as I reached for my lens. Mary said, wryly, “Yes, that’s pretty much how I felt. It’s a three carat, blue-white, flawless diamond. Probably dug up in India, if that’s any help. It’s worth around $150,000, retail.”

“Unusual cut,” I murmured, looking at the magnified lump of crystallized charcoal, “It’s called the-“

“The old mine cut,” interrupted Mary, “Meaning it was most likely faceted sometime between 1700 and 1900. I know. After the police gave it back to me, I had it appraised at Sotheby’s.”

“You went to the police again?”

“I did.”

“Any good?”

“Not really. They hung onto it a while, but nobody reported any similar gems lost or stolen, and then they gave it back. Apparently it’s “not illegal to be given things.” So after that I was on my own. But I still didn’t feel right about it, so I had the appraisal to see if a real professional could find anything more useful.”

“Well done,” said John, heartily. He was in a fair way to make an idiot of himself over this woman, although she seemed flattered by the compliment.

“Thank you,” Mary replied, “And then, the thing is, Mr. Holmes, that it didn’t stop with this. Every year since then, on May 14, I get another one of these in my mail. I’ve changed addresses and it didn’t make a difference. Perfectly matched, very expensive diamonds. I left the rest of them in my safe deposit box: even carrying one of them around makes me edgy. And then, yesterday, there was this.”

She passed over a letter. Fine, high linen content paper, no watermark, 10-point… Trebuchet font, printed on an HP laserjet printer. It read, “Be at the third pillar from the left outside the Lyceum Theatre on Saturday, July 9 at seven o'clock. If you are distrustful, bring two friends. You are a wronged woman, and shall have justice. Do not bring police. If you do, all will be in vain. Your unknown friend.”

There was no signature or address.

“Did you keep the envelope?”

“Yes, here. And here,” she said, passing over a small heap of padded mailers sealed into plastic zip-topped bags, “Are the envelopes the diamonds came in.”

“Well, you do have the right instincts. Not much to see here, though… the letter and the last three packages had their labels off the same printer. The first four were from another. It stretches credulity to think that there are separate groups doing this so we’ll assume for the moment it was simply a matter of replacing an outdated device. The mailers can be bought anywhere. Various London postmarks… thumbprint on this one, Miss Morstan, may I see your right hand please? Thank you. Your thumbprint. I’ll put them under the microscope later but I doubt there’ll be that much to learn.”

“And you’ve no idea at all who may have sent these? No… admirers, things like that?” John asked.

She laughed at that. “Generally, when men are interested in me they go more for things like asking me to dinner rather than anonymously sending me a million dollars in gems over the course of seven years. I’m not that unapproachable.” I rolled my eyes at their stale flirtation, although I don’t believe either of them noticed it.

“But…” she continued, more hesitantly, “Mr. Holmes, do you think that there’s any possibility that these are from my father?”

John was glaring at me, and so instead of saying “Of course not. He’s been dead for ten years,” replied “I’m afraid it’s very unlikely.”

“I see,” Mary replied, quietly. She drew a deep breath and continued, “Well, regardless, I had planned to go… unless you can give me a real reason not to. If whoever it is wants to hurt me it seems like they’ve chosen a really baroque way of going about it. I mean, they already know where I live so it’s not like there’s much point in avoiding them. And I’m getting sick of this mystery.”

“There are, however, a few points of interest in it. As you are allowed to bring two friends and John is already planning on accompanying you, I believe I shall join him.”

She darted her gaze back and forth between us, smiling, “Really? You will? Both of you? Oh, thank you, thank you so much! This whole saga has just been so shady and I didn’t know anyone who’d be any help with this kind of thing. It’s such a weight off my mind. Thank you.”

She was gushing, and her voice had inevitably pitched up again. I responded calmly with, “Yes, well. Can you be here by five thirty on Saturday? And leave us your contact information.”

“Of course!”

And, writing an email address and a phone number on a sheet of scrap paper, she disappeared in a whirl of gratitude.

John rose to escort her to the door. I remained seated, and began texting.

“That, he said, picking up his carrier bags and taking them into the kitchen, “Was a very attractive woman.”

“Hadn’t noticed.”

“Really. I knew you were a human adding machine but I never thought you were actually dead. Sherlock, it’s an objective fact! She’s got a beautiful smile.”

“Very short.”

“Oh, come on. She’s an inch or two shorter than I am.”

While this statement would not actually exclude “short” from consideration, I simply raised my eyebrows and replied, “Women have developed this remarkable technology called shoes which they use when they wish to increase their height, John. She’s no more than five feet tall.”

“Yes, well, shortness is not a handicap, Sherlock. And she’s clever.”

“She’s adequate.”

“And brave. She was going to walk by herself into a threatening situation just because she wanted to find out the truth.”

“So are you. So am I, for that matter. I fail to see why it’s so much more meritorious when it’s her doing it.”

“I’m a combat-trained military reservist, and you are England’s only consulting detective. It’s our job. She’s a very small maths teacher.”

I set down the mobile and glared at him, “Mary Morstan, John, is in no need of your protection. This affair of the diamonds is a mere personal intrigue. She’ll meet with the woman and resolve it without the benefit of your attention.”

He paused from putting the potatoes in the bin and inquired, “It’s a woman sending the diamonds? You’re sure?”

In general, I don’t admit which of my deductions I’m certain of and which are (very good) guesses. Maintaining a reputation as infallible isn’t a trivial exercise. But John had repeatedly earned the truth from me, and so I said, “No, I’m not. I’m reasonably confident, given the font choice, the computer used, and the wording, that it’s a woman, and a rather melodramatic one. But there’s more – uncertainty in these things than I would like.”

John chuckled. “I should take a picture of you right now and call it ‘Sherlock Holmes admitting he might be wrong’. They’d love to have it down at the Yard. So why take the case if you don’t think there’s any mystery?”

“Oh, there is one, just not the “why is someone sending me expensive gemstones” one she came in with. Can you log on to the GRO database and look something up for me? My email address and password will get you in.”

“Sure,” he said, walking back into the sitting room and picking up his laptop, “What?”

“Deaths. Start by looking for “Sholto” in late April, early May of 2005. If that doesn’t bring up anything, look for ex-military, older, in London, same time frame.”

“Right. What are you going to do?”

I held up my mobile. “I’ve done it. I’ve sent a text to brother Mycroft.”

“Why?”

“Watson, when a man leaves a high rank role in the army to become a low-end functionary in the diplomatic service, what does that suggest?”

“Er, PTSD?”

“No. It suggests spy. I want to find out exactly what Thomas Morstan did for a living.”

A week after that, Mary Morstan arrived punctually back at Baker Street. She’d replaced the dowdy suit with trousers and a blue blouse cut low in the front, left off her glasses, and undone her severe bun to let her hair hang over her shoulders. She had chosen flat shoes this time, which was a relief, as it showed the target of all this display was John rather than me.

Six hours after that, I saw that the display had been successful. I had to physically restrain John from going to her as she was handcuffed and loaded into a black maria for the murder of Barbara Sholto. As typical of Americans, she was explaining loudly and slowly to the arresting officer that there had been a terrible misunderstanding, clearly expecting this to rectify the situation.

“John, look,” I said, sotto voce, as I pinned him to the wall of the alley, “If you go over there you’ll only be arrested too. Athelney Jones has already picked up the entire domestic staff and Theresa Sholto and would be only too happy to increase his bag. The man’s an idiot, even by the standards of the metropolitan police. We’ll text Lestrade to let him know, and the worst she’ll have is a few uncomfortable hours, but we need to be on our way if we’re going to actually catch the killer which is the only thing that will do her any good.”

Even that early, I suspected that Mary would not be as swiftly forgotten as the rest of the girlfriends.

Three days later, Mary was a free woman again. The lost crown jewels of the Russian Tsars, of which she had been offered a one-third share, were scattered along six miles of the bottom of the Thames. She had accepted this development with equanimity. As she said to John, “Even if they hadn’t been lost, it’s not like I was expecting to keep them. I’m sure there’s still some Romanovs somewhere who’d like to have them back. The whole time Teresa was telling me the story of how she got them I kept thinking “Yeah, this kind of stuff doesn’t happen in real life.””

I heard, while they were falling in love, enough of “The Things Mary Says” to gag a cat. I heard about Mary’s feelings on politics, the arts, and current events. I heard about Mary’s emotional turmoil on the discovery that her father was an intelligence agent who had taken the pay of so many competing nations and organizations that even now nobody could say who he had really worked for. And that was apart from his being a jewel thief. I heard enough recitations of her personal charm, intelligence, and integrity to gag a dog.

Not being enamored of her, I was able to observe her far more clearly. I saw that she omitted to mention during the investigation that she was already in receipt of seven perfectly-matched flawless three carat blue-white diamonds, pulled from a coronet made for some forgotten Tsarina. I saw no reason to bring it up to anyone, if she had overcome her scruples about receiving stolen property. I would rather the money have gone to John than to anyone else, and it was clear by that point that it would.

Over the next months, Mary incorporated herself into John’s life, and thus, into mine. I grew accustomed to the scent of her cosmetics in the flat’s shared w.c. (she was a disgustingly early riser and had usually gone before I woke up), and the sounds of their post-sex conversation from the upstairs bedroom (they kept the actual lovemaking quiet, out of politeness, but the after-chat was quite distinct). I drew the line, however, at allowing her to tidy the place. She didn’t understand the system and would have made a hash of it.

Ultimately, just over six months after the day she rang the bell at Baker Street, I found myself ordering a round of tequila shots at the bar of the White Lion and slipping chloral hydrate into three of them. Earlier, Mary had balanced on tiptoe to kiss my cheek and whisper in my ear “Can you please try not to let them get him too drunk?” I carried the round back to the table where a flushed and grinning but not yet weaving Watson listened as a dozen of his Army and medical school friends speculated on whether Mary would qualify him as “Four-Continents Watson” or if the actual location of the coitus mattered more than the origin of the lady in question. I passed the shot glasses around, judging that the administration of three Mickey Finns to three particular members of the party would bring the night to a graceful but early end in about an hour.

I judged, as usual, correctly. After decanting the three dazed ringleaders into a cab, the party broke up, and John and I made it back to Baker Street with only slightly more difficulty than usual. The stairs did give him some trouble, but ultimately I was able to successfully deposit him on the couch. I shook two aspirin from the bottle and handed them to him along with a glass of water. He took both uncomplainingly.

“Sherlock?”

“Yes?”

“Thanks. For whatever you did back there. I’d hate to be a mess tomorrow.”

“I looked up the duties of the best man and apparently making sure the groom is present and presentable are tops on the list.”

“And you even agreed to wear a tie!” This non sequitur amused him, and he chuckled at his own joke for a moment, before sobering (comparatively), and staring around the flat. “I’m going to miss all this.”

“No, you won’t,” I predicted, climbing the stairs to fetch the blankets off his bed.

“I will!” he insisted, “I’m happy, really happy, about Mary. She’s wonnerful. But I’ll miss this life. And you.”

“It’s not as though I’ll be dead. You’ll be ten minutes away. I’ll be sure to call you whenever I need my cases blogged.”

“I love you, mate, you know that? Even though you are- just such a prick.”

I smiled and pitched the blankets at his head. “I do. Tosser. Now go to sleep. You have a busy day ahead of you.”

He was out and snoring, wearing everything but his shoes, five minutes later. I refilled his water glass and left it on the end table.

At noon the next day I (wearing not only a tie but my entire morning suit) stood at John’s left shoulder and watched Mary Morstan walk down the aisle. I doubt she saw me: her eyes were fixed on John, who was sober, alert, and in full dress uniform, as requested. The expression of love and joy on her face obliged me to concede that, at the moment, she was in fact a very attractive woman.

I don’t think I could have given him up to anyone who loved him even a bit less.

At the reception I gave a speech which everyone said was very interesting, and drank one and a half glasses of inferior Prosecco. I watched them cut the cake, noting that the new Mrs. Watson was far more comfortable with John’s ceremonial saber than he was. She’d lost the callosities of the dedicated fencer, but the skill remained. Then, as Molly Hooper was prowling around with an eye towards dancing and my actual duties were complete, I slipped out of the hall and walked back to Baker Street.

I stopped in at the chemists and bought a packet of cigarettes, then let myself into the flat. There was a peculiar sensory illusion that it was larger and emptier than normal: nonsense, of course. John was routinely absent when I was there. The fact that the absence would now be permanent didn’t alter the actual physical size of the place.

There was always work, and heedless of my dress clothes, I went to it. Three months later, I “died.” And three years after that, I returned to a London which seemed larger and emptier than I recalled. Sensory illusion again. The softer emotions have a very negative impact upon accurate observation, and the world in general doesn’t change at all when a single person drops out of it. On an individual level, though, a single death can rip the bottom out of everything. Such was the case with Mary Watson, who I encountered on a bright August day in Park Lane. She’d lost a stone in weight, which was significant at her height, and was wearing an oversized camel-colored cardigan which I recognized with a pang as being one of Watson’s. She had, in general, the appearance of a child’s toy where the stuffing had been pulled out. I approached her, unseen, as her attention was on Ronald Adair’s flat. When she lost her composure and fled, I hesitated. Then I followed. There were two reasons for this. The first, as always, was John. I couldn’t envision a situation where he would not have come to the aid of a crying woman. In the particular case of Mary, he’d have sprinted to it.

As for the second, well… On the occasion of the case of Neville St. Claire, John had said to me that, “People in trouble come to my wife like birds to a light-house.”

And I truly had nowhere else to go. Chapter 3: The Death of Ronald Adair (Mary)

In general, I am not a fainter, and I didn’t faint then. But a grey mist swirled in front of my eyes, and when it subsided I noticed I had dropped the cigarette onto the well-clipped Hyde Park grass. I picked it up with numb, nerveless fingers. With my other hand I reached out to Sherlock and pushed on the flesh of his bicep. He was reassuringly solid.

“So I haven’t gone mad.”

“No.”

“Not dead, then?”

“Yes.”

I took a drag from the Silk Cut and asked, “Does anyone else know besides me?”

“Mycroft.”

“Of course.”

“And Molly Hooper.”

“That bitch!” I exclaimed, before I could stop myself. I wouldn’t quite have called Molly a friend. We didn’t see much of one another, but her quiet competence had gotten me through the hellscape of the funeral. I found it startlingly painful to believe that she had been concealing a secret like this- especially from John.

Sherlock quirked an eyebrow at me and said, “You’re harsher on her than on Mycroft?”

“There is nothing that I would put past one of the Holmes boys.”

He sighed, and drew on his own cigarette. The sun dipped below the treetops and set us into shadows.

“Sherlock,” I asked, eventually, “What do you want?”

“I need a gun.”

“Oh, Jesus Christ. Of course you do.”

“Mary, please-“ and he hesitated. He and I had never been more than “friendly”, and he certainly had never been inclined to ask any favors of me.

“You’re still in trouble, aren’t you?” I accused.

He hesitated again.

“Yes.”

“Right,” I said, brushing off my pants and rising, “We’ll talk. Baker Street, or our place? My place.”

“Baker Street is being watched.”

“Can we take a cab?”

“Probably.”

It was actually very impressive, how he collapsed his face into that of the Cockney souvenir hawker. He even seemed to lose several inches in height. The stage lost an excellent actor when he decided to go into detective work.

We walked in silence back to Park Lane, and took a cab (after he’d dismissed the first one that tried to stop). He sat next to me in silence, until a horrible thought overtook me, and I said, “Oh, God, has anyone told you? About-“

“Your… bereavement? Yes. I was… very sorry to hear of it.”

It was a relief. It had already happened several times: some colleague or acquaintance who I hadn’t seen in a while would, in the course of ordinary chit-chat, drop, “Oh, and how’s John doing?” into the conversation. And then I would have to watch their faces change from polite disinterest to horror and pity as I gave them the news. I would say it was the worst thing I had to do, but I had developed an entire new suite of worst things in recent months and was somewhat spoiled for choice.

We didn’t speak any further until I let us into the flat.

“Have a seat. I’ll just go get it.”

John, given that he was occasionally prone to physically violent nightmares, had always kept the Sig Sauer semi-automatic securely locked away in a box in the master bedroom closet. I retrieved it, and returned to the living room. Sherlock had installed himself in his old favorite spot on the sofa, and Arthur had climbed onto the arm next to him. They were watching each other with matching expressions of flat-eyed distaste.

“I don’t know where the key is,” I said, passing the box over.

“It’s fine,” he replied. And indeed, he materialized a lockpick from somewhere and opened it within ten seconds.

He’d removed his auburn wig, although he still had on an excellent shade of lipstick for his complexion: a glossy transparent berry-stain. It was almost the only color on his face. Whatever he’d been up to, it was doing no favors for his health. I wouldn’t have thought he could have gotten thinner or paler, barring his contracting tuberculosis or vampirism. And yet, he had managed. At some point, he’d cut his hair off close to the scalp, and it was faintly peppered with grey. Sherlock was a year or two younger than I, but at the moment I could see what he would be like as an old man.

“You know that thing’s illegal, right?” I said.

“It’s not something that’s a real concern just at the moment,” he returned, calmly.

“It should probably be cleaned. It’s not been touched since… well, I’m not sure of the last time John cleaned it.”

“It will be fine. They’re very simple instruments and Watson was always over-cautious. I didn’t clean my old one for years and it never had any problems.”

“That’s because John would secretly do it for you every few months.”

One of the small pleasures in life that everyone should get to experience at least once is to watch Sherlock Holmes’ face when he is informed that one of the normals has gotten something past him. I had to suppress a flicker of a smile at how thunderous he looked.

“Look,” I said, “Give it here and I’ll do it. The cleaning kit’s on the top shelf above the stove in the kitchen, if you’ll reach it down for me.”

I could hear him rummaging around in the cabinet as I released the clip, disconnected the slide, and popped out the spring. I laid everything down on the coffee table and accepted the kit when he returned and gave it to me. When I sighted down the barrel, I could see ample dust, and a fair bit of corrosion from the soggy English atmosphere. It only made sense, really. When Sherlock had died, John had lost any professional reason to carry a gun, and gained a strong personal reason to lock it away and leave it to rust. Dipping the cleaning swab into the wide-mouthed jar of solvent, I began passing it through the barrel.

“’In a self-defense situation, there will be many things you can’t control. The condition of your weapon is not one of them,’” I quoted.

“Did Watson say that?”

“No, though he’d have agreed with the sentiment. That was my stepfather. He was the one who taught me about shooting.”

Sherlock blinked at me. “I didn’t know you had a stepfather.”

“Like everyone else, I do actually have an objective existence apart from the parts you find interesting, Sherlock.”

I sounded bitter, but I didn’t care. I had been the one to put John back together after Sherlock’s quote-unquote death, and having him sitting calmly on my sofa irked.

“I only meant,” he replied, “That he wasn’t at your wedding.”

“He has congestive heart failure and travel is very difficult for him!” I snapped,

“Sherlock, why the hell did you do this?”

“Well, I had in fact been exposed as a fraud and-“

“Bullshit. You have been more or less cleared for two years and I’m sure your brother told you that. D.I. Lestrade had to demonstrate that you weren’t, in general, a criminal, because he wanted to keep his job. Fifty people, including me, by the by, came forward to tell stories of how you had solved cases that you couldn’t possibly have faked. The only real mystery remaining is this whole affair with Richard Brook, and frankly the best person to justify that would have been you.”

He scrubbed his hands through the bristles of his hair. “There was more.”

“So tell me.”

Sherlock sighed, and stared off into the space over my left shoulder. “When the head of an organization is removed, the organization generally remains. John Kennedy is shot, the United States persists. The death of Jim Moriarty left a thriving multinational criminal organization with a vacancy at the top for which there were numerous keen candidates. I have spent the last three years attempting to take advantage of this situation and dismantle its operations entirely.”

Something about the cold way he said “dismantle” made me think I really didn’t want to hear much about this process. I asked, “And you couldn’t have done that in your own persona?”

“No. Because- Moriarty was in many ways a remarkable man.”

The tone of this statement was pure admiration, and I rubbed my forehead where I could feel the old familiar “Sherlock” headache coming on. “How’s that?” I asked.

“I don’t want to say he founded a cult of personality, but in his immediate circle were several men who genuinely did admire him and support him in his goals, as opposed to the ordinary hangers-on who simply were in it for the profit.”

“So, his friends.”

“What?”

I sighed. “Never mind. Continue.”

Title: Under Fire Word Count: 6K Rating: M Genre: Gang AU, Drama Warnings: Violence Pairings : Hyung Line x Reader (Primarily Namjoon x Reader), very slight OT7 x Reader. Pairings (in this chapter): Namjoon x Reader, Jin x Reader, Jimin x Reader, Hobi x Reader.

Summary: As a child you lived among the most wealthy and powerful, after the death of your mother you were shipped off to stay with her sister. Even after finishing your education you continue to live apart from the elite, but a visit home creates an unexpected disaster. You are suddenly roped into a darker world, and who better to be your guide than the infamous gang known as BTS.

Chapter 3 - Collateral Damage

POV (Y/N)

Namjoon is followed in by two others, one who you vaguely remember from the manor, and another you have yet to meet. But, after hearing you shout Namjoon’s name in anger, they both make a u-turn heading back to the door.

“V, Jimin, you don’t have to leave,” pleads Namjoon.

“I think it would be better if we did Namjoon, this conversation sounds too arduous for my taste.” The member called V places an odd emphasis on Namjoon’s name. “Jin let us know when she is finished with him, I would like to introduce myself properly.

Jin nods looking very intently at my shoulder, probably uncomfortable by the fact that he has to stay by default.

You shake your head in disbelief, “How... how is this possible? I checked the database the day you introduced yourself. You have no record! Are you telling me that my father intentionally sent a lone gang member to my apartment, without so much as a warning?

Jin speaks up without even raising his head, “He actually sent the gang leader.” Namjoon glares at him, Jin continues to stitch the wound, ignoring Namjoon.

“Why? Why would he send you? My father has more than enough money to hire a whole security team.”

“People are easily bought, loyalty is not. I was glad Park trusted me enough to protect you, to keep you hidden. I felt sorry for your situation. After the attack I was worried to leave you alone. I tried to convey to Park what you revealed to me...”

You cut him off, “Oh god, I told you that I was lonely, I told you that I was scared, and then you ki...” Your hands went to you face and you groan unable to finish the sentence it’s so embarrassing. If the kiss had been based on attraction, like you originally hoped, it would have been fine, but no, you had unknowingly taken comfort in his pity. Jin thinking that you can’t see him, looks over at Namjoon mouthing the words, what did you do?

“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have made contact your father advised against it.”

“Did he?” You whisper, you can't decide if you are more upset about the kiss or your father’s determination to keep you in the dark. The room falls quiet. Jin takes this time to finish stitching the wound together. You close your eyes focusing on the pain.

“Your father and I... we were very close, I could tell that you meant the world to him.” Namjoon murmurs.

Your eyes flash open again to pierce him with your gaze as you scoff, “You just contradicted yourself. Either my father didn’t care about you and your line of work, or he didn’t trust me enough to handle the truth. I am beginning to think the latter.”

“He wanted to keep you safe.” He defends, his voice rising with mine.

I sat up making the move to stand, Jin trying to hold me in place. “Bullshit! How did he think that this was going to end? Did he think that he was just going to pass on peacefully with no pending vendettas against him, did he think I wouldn’t find out? If he really cared about my safety he would have told me, he could have trained me. If I had been prepared he might not be dead right now,” You lash out with tears.

“(Y/N), I need you to calm down. RM maybe you should leave.” Jin urges.

Instead he comes closer and helps Jin lay you back down on the table. He looks you straight in the eye, “Seven against one are odds that even someone with training can’t beat. This was not your fault. He never want you to face any of this, he didn’t tell you so that you could live your life without fear.”

Your anger continues to grow, “Do you know why I hacked into the criminal documents at the police department?”

He shakes his head.

“I was constantly surrounded by anomalies, people who knew my name before I told them, people who didn’t seem to have a past, people who threw around their money that they earned doing “freelance work.” I went to the police to tell them that I felt like I was being followed, but to them I was just a paranoid and delusional girl. I did my own research. They all had records drug dealing, assault, ect. I would try to distance myself but then along would come someone else. I was inexplicably happy the day you arrived in my store. Your actions proved to me that I wasn’t crazy. There had to be some other driving force luring these people to me, something more than my family name, if someone else knew that I need protection. I was never safe, just uninformed and afraid.”

Namjoon doesn’t respond.

You look over at Jin who has finished stitching. He stammers realizing that he is staring, “How does it feel? I have to disinfect it one last time. Brace yourself, it’s going to hurt.” Namjoon looks like he is going to reach out for your hand, but you pull it away. The pain is so excruciating you grip the table instead, knuckles turning white.

You could feel Jin’s warm hands through the bandage as he presses it to your shoulder. “I need you to stay in this room for a day or two so we can monitor your vitals. I had to give you a blood transfusion, and I want to observe how you respond to the medication. I’ll go fetch you some fresh clothes. Namjoon could you move her over to the bed?” He nods as Jin leaves the room. Sitting you up and lifting you in his arms he’s careful not to touch your skin. He rests you down so that you are sitting on the sheets. Crouching before you he takes you hands in his.

He pulls something out of his pocket and places it in your clasped hand, it’s your father’s ring, your families ring. You know his intention in giving it is to comfort you, but feels like just another slap in the face. Your anger dissolves into sadness, tears finally streaming down your face. He hesitates before reaching up and wiping one away with his thumb. You feel bad for taking out your anger on Namjoon, it wasn’t his fault that your father had wanted to keep this hidden.

Jin returns. “RM I leave you for one moment and here you are driving my patient to tears, OUT!”

Namjoon protests.

“Unless (Y/N) doesn’t mind you staying here while she changes?” Jin askes.

He turns bright red, dropping your hand he apologizes, and leaves without another word.

“Works every time.” Jin smiles and laughs to himself, “Put him in an awkward situation and he freezes right up. I hope these fit we don’t have to many clothes that’ll suite you. We never thought we would need to keep a stock of women’s clothes in our safehouse.” In addition to the clothes he also brought a basin of warm water and a few towels. “I’ll just be cleaning up my instruments if you need help.” He drew a curtain to give me some privacy.

The sweat pants weren’t a problem, the shirt on the on the other hand. “Jin?”

“Yes?”

“I might need another pair of hands.”

The shirt is stuck to you, dried blood gluing it to your skin, a difficult task even if both your arms were working. “I think we’ll have to cut it off.” He looks a little uncomfortable but proceeds anyway.

“It’s a good thing you don’t freeze up during awkward situations too.”

He smiles, “I can’t afford to, someone has to be the mature one of the group.”

You hold a sheet to your chest as he cuts the last of the shirt off. You unhooked your bra at the same time and slip it off. “Let me wash your back for you, you’re not going to be able to reach all the blood,” Jin offers.

“Thank you I’ll be honest I didn’t expect...”

“Gang members to act this way? Not all do obviously. I don’t have the typical upbringing that most gang members have had. I was part of a political family, always in the spotlight, I have tried to hold on to the manners and social graces passed down to me.”

You had often interacted with other political families as a child. The memory of a childhood crush comes to the forefront of your mind, one that you hadn’t thought about it years. You understand why Jin looks so familiar now. You turn around to face him, a bloody cloth resides in his hand, a confused expression appears on his face. Looking into his eyes, you question his name, “Seokjin?”

His smile is so great that it crinkles his eyes, “I thought that you would never recognize this handsome face.” An air of laughter in his voice.

You smile back reaching slowly up to his face. “How long has it been?”

He cups your hand to his cheek, “18 years, not since the funeral...”

When your mom died..when you moved to the countryside to be with her sister, that was when your whole life changed. You can’t help but regret your father’s decision to ship you off now.

While you are lost in your thoughts, he abruptly pulls your hand away. Clearing his throat he changes his tone back to that of an acquaintance, becoming uncomfortably professional. “If you could please call me Jin... I have left that other name behind. It would probably be best to call Namjoon RM as well, some of the guys get uneasy when we use real names.”

“Of course Jin but why are you here now. What happened?”

“I’ll have to save that story for another time.” He pulls out a zip up sweater and tries stretching out your weak arm slowly pulling the sleeve up the length of it. After pulling your other arm through he comes around and front and zips it up. You pull the sheet out from underneath.

“I never thought that I would see you again. Thank you Jin for everything.” He beams at you but you can’t help but feel that he is hiding more than he lets on.

“I’m going to give you some painkillers, and take first watch. Jimin will be in later while I get some rest. If you need to reach me, please use that button.” He points to a remote on the bedside table. He settles into the chair beside your bed. After plugging in your IV he holds you hand until you fall asleep... just like he used to.

POV Jin

You fall asleep quicker than I anticipate. I run my hands through my hair. I still can’t believe that you remember me, I’m not sure if I should be happy that you can recall my name after 18 years apart, or upset that you know me from my previous life. You are the only good period in a past that I want to forget so much. While you sleep I sit in the chair next to you, my head resting in my hands, while I monitor your vitals.

RM returns an hour later. I let a sigh escapes me, now it is my turn to fess up. I look at RM through my fingers, elbows’ still on my knees to support my heavy head.

“I knew Park had a daughter.”

“I figured as much.”

“How?..”

“When I let then news drop you were the only one who stayed quiet, you Jin, you have an opinion on everything.”

I chuckle. “We used to play together as kids in my other life. Our fathers were close before... well, you know... They were more than friends, more than colleagues, they were like brothers. After the incident she moved away and I haven’t seen her since. Almost 20 years later she still remembers me. Park told me not to say anything, he said that it was for the best. I question it now though, was he right to make that decision? It seems like she has dealt with more hardships than we were aware of.”

RM looks over at you.

“She’s out cold there was a light sedative with her pain medication, she won’t wake for at least a few hours.” I inform him.

RM takes a deep breath, “I think it was wrong of him to make that decision for her. I want to bring her into the fold, but in order to do that I am going to need your help. Now that her father has pass and without his approval she will be understandably cautious. ”

I open my mouth to argue, but RM continues.

“I know, I’m sorry there are going to be things that you aren’t going to want to discuss but she is from your world originally. Not only that but she has worked alone to survive for so many years, she may not want to rely on us for help. You and Hope need to show her your kindness, and Suga will show her the outside threat. If you succeed, we can all show her how sweet revenge is.”

POV (Y/N)

You wake with the sun beaming onto your face. Lifting your hand to cover your eyes you grimace in pain.

“Morning sleepy head.”

“What time is it?”

“Almost noon.”

You open your eyes, the bare white walls instantly reminding you of your situation. You rolled over in tears hoping that sleep would claim you again, so you didn’t have to face the truth yet. You hadn’t completely processed the situation last night, but that doesn’t change the facts, you are the last remaining member of the Park line, no more father, no mother, no siblings. You are alone...

You feel a finger poke your back. “Is there anything I can get you?” As your breathing hitches noisily, you hear Jimin take a step back.

“I just need some privacy.”

“You missed breakfast, what do you want to eat?”

“I’m not hungry.”

“Jin’s not going to like...”

“Please Jimin,” you beg cutting hit off. “I just want to be alone.”

He gives in, “I’ll be outside the door if you need me.”

You cover your face and let out a wail of sadness which dissolves into more tears. Alone again, you will have to get used to this. Although you did not see you father very much having him there occasionally was better than not at all. His secrets hurt you deeply, the same questions running through your head over and over. What exactly was he using this team for that he couldn’t tell you? Had he not realized the pain he was putting you through? Is it okay to be angry with him even though he paid the ultimate price for it all? Your mind teeters between grief and anger only to be distracted hours later by the sound of a row outside.

“She wants privacy!” Exclaimes Jimin.

“I want to make sure that she is okay.” You hear Namjoon respond.

“Did she push the button?”

There is a pause before Namjoon answers, “No.”

“Then I’m not letting you in, she will come out when she wants to. Give her time.”

Namjoon swears loudly but the sound of his footsteps leading away reaches your ears. You feel a surge of gratefulness toward Jimin as you don’t want anyone to see you like this especially Namjoon. You want to be strong in front of him and knowing that he was your father’s right hand man would make you crumble again instantly.

You partially unzip your sweater to take a look at the wound, the pain has returned, and the bandage is somewhat bloody. You look around the room. Two doors, one the exit, the other must be the bathroom. You thank the gods that you won’t have to leave the room to use the toilet. You push yourself to the edge of the bed, testing your legs on the floor before making the trek.

Looking in the mirror was a mistake. Your hair the consistency of a mop, eyes extremely puffy. You hadn’t noticed last night that Jin had placed a bandage on your neck as well. You tie your hair back with the elastic on your wrist.

After relieving yourself, you are heading back to bed when pain overwhelms you, hitting with a wave of dizziness to top it off. You reach out to grab the table next to you to steady yourself, but your blurry vision prevents you from seeing Jin’s surgery tray resting near the edge. There is a large clatter as both you and the tray fall to the floor . You swear loudly.

Jimin came barging through the door. “Are you okay?” He kneels down to you assessing your condition. You look to the floor taking a moment to pull yourself together. He craned his head under yours looking up at your face. “You should have called for help, I was just outside if you needed me remember?”

“I’m used to getting by on my own, I just got dizzy.”

“Getting by with a gunshot wound?” He asks skeptically. “You’re probably in a lot of pain aren’t you?”

You look away embarrassed by his proximity.

“Let me help you.” You begin to shake your head.

“It wasn’t a question.” He lifts you up, taking you back over to the bed. “You need more pain medicine. I’ll call Jin, he’ll want to know you’re up,” he pulls out his phone before you could protest. He takes a few steps away from your bed pacing as he talks to Jin.

You try not to listen in on their conversation, disliking the act of having to listening to people talk about you. Jimin comes back over to you but now he was the one who looks embarrassed.

“Thank you for earlier with RM, I know that it probably wasn’t easy going against your leader like that.”

“Oh you heard that?” He says growing more flustered, “I just know that if it was me I would need time to collect my thoughts.”

You agree nodding, “And sorry about the height joke yesterday.”

That earns a full laugh from him. “I’m surprised you even remember that, it’s fine really, not like I haven’t heard them all before.

Jin walks in the door with a tray, “I brought food I thought you might be hungry, Jimin I brought yours too. How are you feeling?”

He puts a hand to your forehead. “No fever that’s good, let’s check your...wound” He hesitates on your sweater, still partially unzipped, solving the mystery of Jimin’s abashedness.

After his examination Jin makes sure to zip your sweater back up to the top. “Stitches seem to be holding, take this.” He hands you more pain medication and a glass of water.

You watch Jin out of the corner of your eye as he walks back to the food tray. He slaps the back of Jimin’s head along the way, whispering and gesturing to you. You try to look absorbed in your own thoughts while drinking your water but a snort of laughter sneaks through. Jin carries your food over to you. “Hope you like black bean noodles.” You nod eyes wide, unable to remember the last time that someone made food for you like this.

In the distance you could hear the smoke detector. “Never should have left RM in charge of the stove.” Jin muttered under his breath leaving swiftly.

Jimin had just picked up his dinner and looked as if a dilemma was raging inside of him. Defeat showing in his slumped shoulders he turns towards the door bowl in hand.

“Jimin could you stay and eat with me?”

He turns his head to give you a beautiful smile. “Of course.”

You both ate in silence for the most part, but it was nice to have someone else there. You run one question over and over in your head try to figure out the best way to phrase the query. “Jimin if you don’t mind me asking how did you meet my father?”

“You mean how did I come to be in a gang?” He smirks, seeing right through you. He then hesitates and lowers his head.

“I’m sorry it was rude of me to ask, I’m sure it’s personal.”

“Your right it is personal. Not many people join gangs out of desire, for most of us membership was the only path to survival. I used to work in films as a stunt double, I specialized in sword fighting. My work was my life I loved the beauty of the movements and the complexity they reached. I still look back in on that time fondly, however I reached a dry spell with my career, no one was creating films with old style fighting scenes. I tried to broaden my horizon with other stunts but ended up injuring myself during a car chase scene. Unable to work I quickly fell into debt and stared owing money to the wrong kind of people. I never should have listened to the other actors when they said that they had connections to borrow money, by connections they meant drug dealers.”

He pauses, a pained look appears on his face as he begins to speak again. “They came for me one night when I was late on a payment. As they beat me to a pulp, they debated if they were going to sell me on the market, thinking that my looks might make them a profit. I fought off most of them but they hit back hard. They left me for dead in the alley when they realized that I wasn’t such and easy target.”

I shivered as I thought of my own experience, imagining the fear and pain he must have felt. “RM found me, and Jin fixed me up. They told your father I would be an asset to the team with the experience I had. Your father paid off my debts and placed me under his protection. I was proud to be on his team. I never felt like I was going against my conscience with the jobs he gave us. He was a good man.”

“What kind of work do you guys do?”

“Not sure that I am the best one to explain it, RM will have to fill you in.”

I look at my watch, it was approaching 6pm. I don’t want to put this off any longer, “ Could I meet the rest of the team, I wouldn’t mind getting out of this room.”

“I can always call them up here but if you’re really determined Jin said that they will be in downstairs in the kitchen.”

“I think I can handle that, stairs will be the easiest obstacle I’ve had all week.”

“Before talking to them you should know, some of the other members are a bit more private about their life before joining. I would let them approach the subject first rather than asking.” You nod, his concern for his fellow members is admirable.

With food inside you and feeling a bit more stable, making it to the stairs under your own power. You grip the railing as you go down, Jimin holding on to your side ready to catch you if you end up going head first. You examine your surroundings as you descend. “I thought Jin said this was a safe house, this place is huge.”

“It‘s more like our city residence. Park wanted us to be comfortable, and the location is more convenient than the manor for running ops,” Jimin explains.

Just to the side of the kitchen there it a long table with eight chairs. Namjoon is seated at the head, Jin to his right, JHope next to Jin, with an empty seat beside Hope.

The three seats on the other side of namjoon are occupied by those who you have not yet met officially although you think you might have had a brief glance at the boy in the middle last night. Jimin pulls out the chair at the end for you.

“Sorry to interrupt.”

“No need to apologize this is perfect timing, let me introduce Suga, V, and JK.” Namjoon responds kindly.

You bow your head to them, silence creeps into the room. Everyone’s eyes are down cast no one looking directly at you, a truly somber meeting. How much did your father mean to them? It seems like he might have been more than just a patron.

“I would like to thank you all for last night, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now if it wasn’t for your help.”

“We had our orders, “Get her out, and keep her safe.” Suga mutters. He earns an elbow to the side from V.

“I apologize if they seem rude.” Jin glares at Suga. “Only RM and I knew of your existence until yesterday.”

“I can relate. You are not going to disrespect me by being honest. I wish I could have saved him, I know that you would rather have him sitting here instead of me”

J-Hope responds, “Your father treated all of us like a family. He saved us all and brought us together. His last request was for us to save you. I am thankful that we were able to fulfill that wish.” You give him a small smile which he returns. You can’t help but feel that he might have been more of a father to them than he was to you.

Your fingers fumble on the ring in your pocket. You reassure yourself that this is the right decision before placing it on the table. You look Namjoon dead in the eye trying to show confidence in your choice. “I will leave this in your care, it was always intended to symbolize the passing of familial duties. I don’t think I can live up to that task anymore,” you smile sadly. “I’m sorry to intrude on your space, I’ll be out of your hair by Monday, I have my ticket already booked.”

V’s eyes widen looking at you,“ Your father’s will specified that you were the single heir, you know what you are to inherrate right? A multi billion dollar fortune.”

You nod your head. “I never wanted to live like this lifestyle thought, why do you think I work at a bookstore? The thought of being an heiress with political ties...” You shiver with anxiety, “I wanted to have a normal life away from the spotlight, and I still dot.”

V opens his mouth again only uttering one word, “but...”

Namjoon continues when V’s words fail. “What V is trying to say is that it is no longer safe for you to return to your old life. GOT7 is already aware of your status, and news will spread fast. Not only was Park a rich political advocate but he was also the patron and founder of BTS. Other gangs will see you as a commodity and a threat with Park gone. The original plan, if anything like this happened, was to disband, but there is too much at stake right now. In addition we now have a debt to collect from GOT7.”

“What do you expect me to do, take on my father’s role? Be your financial backer no questions asked? I don’t need to stay here. I have my own life, I can take care of myself.”

“You could barely take care of yourself before.” He retorts.

“What is that supposed to mean?” As you ask it occurs to you that last week might not have been his first trip to Busan. “How long have you been watching me RM?!” You snap back.

He flinches, you are unsure if it was the change of name or you calling him out.

“There were several targets that I monitored over the years. I took them out before they could get too close. Imagine what it will be like now, with the secret out.”

“How many?!” You yell your patience growing thin.

The other members look to Namjoon as if they are also interested in that information.

“11 maybe 12.” Namjoon mutters.

“Aissh, this is why I don’t like to be kept in the dark! I need transparency not a protector, then maybe I can be ready for what will come. Monday morning I will be on that train.”

“I am telling you it’s not safe.”

The other members heads swiveled back and forth as if watching a tennis match.

“Well then I guess lucky 13 will finish me off, but at least I’ll die on my own terms, my own risk.”

“Is that what your father would have wanted?”

Your heart stops, unable to believe harshness of the words he just delivered. “Don't you fucking dare, how dare you turn this on me?! How the hell should I know, the man lied to me my whole life, how would I know what he wanted?” You storm out of the room. You make it halfway up the stairs before collapsing in sobs while clutching your shoulder.

POV RM

Jin looks at me, “Well that went well.”

I place my hand on my face pinching my brow.

“JK I need you to hack into the street cams around her work and apartment in Busan I’ll give you the addresses, we need to prove to her that her past life has been compromised.”

Jk nods, and retreats to his computer den.

“What is your plan for her RM?” asks Jimin.

“She has potential you all have seen that, she could be more than just a backer. I tried to explain this to Park a week ago but now we have to bring her in. J-Hope you got what I asked?”

“Right here,” He smiles lifting the bags.

“She’s going to need a hand if you could help her.” I ask of him.

“You are to be a perfect gentleman, do you hear me?.” Jin adds.

“I always am.” He laughs, running off.

“Suga I’ll need you to take her out after like we discussed.”

He nods, “I never thought I would see the day that someone could shut you down so easily RM. That is a skill set worth keeping close.” A smirk clearly displayed on his face at my expense.

“As her acting physician, I really must advise against this. She needs rest.” Jin warns

“Either we do this now, or we find her sneaking out in the middle of the night. I’m sure you can see how determined she is, she will completely underestimate the amount of danger she’s in.

“We’ll maybe if you didn’t insult her...” V starts but then tapers off.

I scowl at him and give him a task to focus on, “V I need you to take her to the bank tomorrow. With the news out about her father, she should claim her inheritance as soon as possible.” I issue one last order,“Jin you and I will need to prepare the funeral arrangements.”

POV J-Hope

I find you seated on the steps halfway up, you body trembling, and breathing ragged, but no tears. “Are you okay?” You respond by shaking your head. “Let’s move you off the stairs then.”

Hoisting you up I take you to your new room. I was confident that you would find it far more comfortable than Jin’s sterile office . I sit you down at the foot of the bed and couch in front of you. Resting a hand on you pale forearm I wait for your anxiety to lessen before speaking again.

“How does your arm feel?”

“Numb, I can’t feel much right now.”

I couldn't be sure if you were referring to the pain or your circumstances. I nod, not pushing the issue, instead I start pulling off the bags that a had kept on my arm. Pushing a smile on my face trying to stay positive, “I bought you some clothes, just went off the sizes of what you were wearing, I hope everything fits okay.” You pull out an oversize white hoodie, a black shirt and black leggings in addition to some undergarments.

“Wow you pick these out too?” You ask holding up the green underwear.

If you are expecting to get a rise out of me it definitely works. Blushing I stammer, “No! The sales women chose those.” I fail to mention that the associate did ask what my favourite colour was. “There is a shower in there if you want to freshen up, Jin suggested keeping the bandage on.”

The second you start unzipping your hoodie I jump back in further embarrassment. “Could you hand me that towel to cover myself. I am going to need help taking this off.” You shove the towel up your shirt. I hold the sleeve as you retract your good arm. I pull the sweater around exposing your back, you attempt to straighten your other arm, only to be followed by a gasp of pain.

“Easy there take it slow.” I help you by moving the fabric around so no further movement is needed from your arm. After you head to the bathroom I lay back on the bed trying to cool my heated face.

Parks daughter, I could definitely see similarities in there determination, but they are very different when it comes to emotions, you wear yours on your sleeve, whereas Park buried his beneath. Will you be able to handle the pressure? You will have to rely on us far more than Park did, not that I would mind.

The water stops after 10 minutes or so, I hear another yep of pain not long after, I rush to the door. “Need help?”

“Unless you can put my bra on for me I’m good.”

I panic, “Should I get Jin?”

“No I’ve almost got it.”

A few minutes later you came out in leggings and a t-shirt, holding the hoodie, “Could you?”

You don’t have to finish the sentence before I start helping you again. “Let me get your hair.”

“Oh, you don’t have to.”

“Yes I do, come on.” I sit behind you on the bed running the brush through the soft strands. You seems very much on edge, with a far away look in your eye. After the conversation downstairs I can only assume you want to get out of here as fast as possible, “I know what you’re thinking, please don’t do anything rash. RM is just concerned for your safety, he has JK surveying your home in Busan right now to see if it has been compromised. If it’s all clear you can go without a worry.”

“They are?” You sound surprised and hopeful.

There was no need to dash your dreams right now. It was far more likely than not that our rivals were making their way to your home now to learn more about you.

“Please let us take care of this. It is what we are trained to do.”

“I can’t be watched over forever, I need my freedom.”

“Then let me train you, I’m one of the best fighters in the group. We will have to wait a while until your shoulder heals, but let me suggest it to RM.”

“You’ll train me in Busan?” You ask skeptically. I can tell that you are trying to gauge if my offer is just a ruse to convince you to stay.

Seeing the trap you’ve planted I step over it. “Wherever you end up I will train you.”

“Clever Hope.”

“Just staying honest.”

There’s a knock at the door followed by Suga’s voice, “Hey Spitfire, you ready?”

Does Jeff Bezos Have Huge Feet? An Investigation

Everyone in New York has a story about a close-call with a celebrity. In a city that's home to one million millionaires and almost 80 billionaires, a run-in with the rich and famous is bound to happen eventually. I don't frequent the right ticketed sex parties and don't have the foresight to book tables 10 months in advance, so this is a rare occasion for me. But one time, I showed up to an indie zine fair allegedly 10 minutes after Jeff Bezos, his body-double, and a bodyguard detail, left.

My only regret in my entire six years as a Brooklyn resident is not leaving my apartment for this event even 11 minutes earlier. Not because I need to get a glimpse of that shiny head perusing anti-capitalist art, but to get a peekie-see at his feetsies.

Months later, I found myself standing at the entrance of the Liberty Ferry in Battery Park on a 30-degree day, gazing at a spot where Bezos walked last spring, closely examining the stones where his shoes once tread. How big were those shoes, I would ask myself on this unholy pilgrimage.

To the general public, the size of Bezos' feet is a mystery no one seems to have the answer to except the man himself. I sought to discover it.

THE CURRENT CLAIMS

There are dozens of websites devoted to celebrities' bodily measurements, including statistics about their height, weight, eye color, age, and astrological signs. Most of these sites include an entry for Bezos and on average, they agree on the basics: He's five feet, seven inches tall, weighs around 154lbs, is 57 years old, and has brown eyes.

Some sites go further than others, but most conflict on the feet. Several attempts have been made to try to guess the size of his feet. Gossipgist.com says they're a 14, a size so large and uncommon, most shoe size charts don't list it, and that sometimes require a special order. Celebrityboss.com says 10. Celebrityinside.com cites his "distinctive features" as being his cleft chin, asymmetrical eyes (the right one is always a little bit more closed than the left), and his "style of laughing." This last note is haunting, but it's not what I'm here for.

WikiFeet Men—"the collaborative celebrity feet website"—also lists Bezos' foot size as "unknown." And if the good folks of wikiFeet don't know, it's safe to say that no one really knows the truth, except the man himself.

In 2004, Amazon's top reviewer Joanna Daneman crossed paths with Bezos at an Amazon-sponsored event, and noticed that "he has really large feet." So large that, six years later, these flippers stand out in her memory. Then again, she also characterizes him as "really tall," which he objectively is not.

He is 5'7. His feet can't be that huge.

There's scant data available on any sort of foot-to-height average, but anthropometric data from the University of Rhode Island cites an average ratio of 6.6:1—for every 6.6 inches of height, average males have one inch of foot length. For Jeff's 67 inches, we could assume his feet are 10.15 inches long, approximately a size 8.5. But Bezos, one of the richest and arguably most powerful men to ever flap his footsie-wootsies across this humble planet, is no average man. Perhaps his body defies norms as well.

My working hypothesis at this point is that as a short-to-average height man, and a billionaire, he carries himself as if he's a much taller dude, but maybe his feet are disproportionately large compared to the rest of him, making them seem enormous in photos and eyewitness accounts.

We have to confirm via forensic photo analysis.

EXHIBIT A: THE SHOE THAT FITS

Bezos' wikiFeet entry contains a handful of paparazzi photos, mostly of him barefoot or in sandals on vacation. In some, his feet seem very large. In other photos, the perspective changes, and his feet seem impossibly petite.

One thing is for certain: the man fills out a pair of strappy sandals. I thought these were Birkenstocks, due to their iconic two-strap slide design, so I emailed a handful of Bezos feet pics to the Birkenstock company, hoping for some enlightenment.

A spokesperson replied within 20 minutes: "Hey Sam, they are not Birkenstock."

I asked Zappos, which is owned by Amazon and therefore Bezos, if it could help ID the size or shoe. A spokesperson there, while apologetic, was unable to give me any information.

But the UK tabloid Daily Mail had the answer all along: They're a $531 pair of Prada slides. Reinvigorated with hatred for the rich, I turned to the foot fetishists of Reddit.

I messaged the mods of r/CelebrityFeet, a forum devoted to celebrity feet, my very earnest request for help. Do they know anything about these elusive sweeties? If they do, they aren't telling. I was promptly silenced for even asking:

When I asked a mod for r/jeffbezos if they knew anything about their #1 guy's feet, they told me to "learn to code." On to the next.

I messaged u/jokes_on_you, who helped me debunk the faked Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez foot pic last year, if he'd be willing to lend his trained eyes to the investigation of Bezos' feet. He asked me to send my own foot pics in exchange for information, which in a non-journalistic context might be a fair price to ask. But according to Motherboard editor-in-chief Jason Koebler, trading quid-pro-quo foot pics with a source would "set bad precedent."

Fine.

EXHIBIT B: THE SUPERYACHT TENDER

In the wikiFeet photos, Bezos strolled his $531 Pradas through a December 2019 vacation, set aboard fellow bald billionaire David Geffen's yacht in St. Barth's. This big boat, I learned, is named the Rising Sun, and is manufactured by ship builder and navy contractor Lürssen, which also manufactures naval ships armed for warfare.

(The photos, it turns out, are owned by a firm called The Mega Agency. We know this because we bought one of these photos from the company for the very reasonable price of $250.)

Rising Sun is a 453-foot long superyacht, and has capacity for at least one "tender," the name for the little day-excursion sized boats that come with ships that big. One of the wikiFeet photos from the St. Barth's trip is a group picture on a tender, seemingly exploring some sea cave, with Bezos front and center, barefoot.

His feet look humongous in this photo. Most usefully for our investigation, his left foot is placed right next to a straight line of paint on the floor. If we knew the square footage of the floor area of this tender, we could potentially deduce the length of this piece of floor paint—and therefore, the foot.

I emailed Lürssen, maker of $200 million yachts and war vessels, and definitely did not mention any feet. But they still wouldn't give me anything helpful.

"We do not comment on our yachts (or their tenders) to the press as a matter of confidentiality," Timothy Hamilton, director of Lürssen Americas, replied. "Best of luck with your article; it sounds interesting!"

Timothy, you have no idea.

EXHIBIT C: CLINTON CASTLE FLAGSTONES

At this point, powerless and frustrated at our inability to learn a simple fact about a multi-billionaire whose unprecedented empire is in part fueled by the wholesale and dangerous collection of data on millions of innocent civilians, we reached out to a true professional for help.

Motherboard managing editor Emanuel Maiberg contacted Eastern Europe/Eurasia lead researcher and trainer Aric Toler at Bellingcat, the award-winning open source investigations team that previously used images posted to social media to discover key information about the downing of flight MH17 in Ukraine and unmask Russian government assassins.

Toler generously agreed to aid our investigation. We were heartened to hear from him that we were on the right track. "If anyone can figure it out, it's wikiFeet," he said, before we explained that it was not responding. Then he, too, suggested we find a photo of Bezos' feet next to an object we can measure. But while we were fixated on the photo of the Big Foot on the superyacht tender, Toler provided this crucial image of a Bezos photo opp in Battery Park. More specifically, according to the Getty Images caption, "Statue Cruises Terminal in Battery Park in New York."

Here, again, we have more straight lines next to his feet, in the form of large, identical flagstones. This we could work with; if we could get down there and measure the stones, we could theoretically calculate a rough foot length.

Before I headed out to wander Battery Park on a very cold February afternoon, Koebler, Maiberg, and I did some Google Street View exploring to find the exact location the photo was taken.

In the Getty photo, everything in the background is slightly compressed—a result of using a telephoto lens, as photojournalists capturing Bezos often use. But I had my landmarks: a distinctive bush, some columns, this gray monument building, and Castle Clinton.

With the coordinates dialed in (40°42'11.7"N 74°00'59.4"W) I headed to Manhattan's southernmost tip to walk in Bezos' footsteps. As I got closer to the spot we'd seen in photos, I saw the flagstones.

I moved slightly out of view of a park ranger and got to work taking measurements. Each stone is about 55 inches by 52.5 inches.

I sent this data back to Maiberg's forensic photo lab (Microsoft Paint) and he set to work:

If a little more than four and a half of Bezos' shoes fit in one of these stones lengthwise, that's around 11.9 inches of shoe.

If you account for the shoe being a little bit bigger than the foot inside, and reference various shoe and foot size charts, one can assume his feet are around 11 inches long.

These measurements are obviously not accurate to the nanometer, but even by the widest margin, the length of Bezos' shoe is between 10 to 12 inches long. It is likely somewhere closer to the middle of those two extremes, and while we don't know for sure, we are confident that his feet are not notably large, and certainly not a daunting size 14.

At least in this respect, Bezos is just an average man.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

If I'm being honest with myself, I don't feel better with this information. Maybe some things should remain mysterious.

Throughout this investigation, however, when I ranted and raved in dark hours to friends and loved ones about my week-long quest, several people asked, "Why?"

The pursuit of knowledge is always worthwhile. If the tagline of the newspaper Bezos himself purchased is to be believed, "Democracy Dies in Darkness." Information wants to be free. Etc. The feet of a billionaire should be no less subject to scrutiny than, say, the feet of a congresswoman. When the boot is on your neck, measure it.

Amazon did not respond to a request for comment on the size of Jeff Bezos' feet.

Prologue

Like every other Half-Elf, I wasn’t born in Serhya. I came over on a damn boat as their only cabin boy. My mother tried to receive safe passage for me and her after our home became too dangerous for us to stay in. The asshole High Elf Quartermaster killed her and tossed her overboard while I was looking over a book she told me to read. Before I could look up, he had me in shackles and tossed me in a jail cell in the brig. When the ship’s Dwarven captain came back, he didn’t enjoy the Quartermaster’s company and attitude anymore so he smashed his head to pieces against my cell door. He unshackled me and had me working to pay for my passage from Tyriok to Zealor. Honestly, it was probably the best thing to happen to me. It was about a three month trip across the Solemn Sea. Within the first week, I had my first taste of rum. By the end of the first month, I out drank everybody on the ship while the captain pat me on the back with a proud laugh. By the end of the second month, the captain made me his First Mate, but it didn’t change anything important. Once the third month came to an end and the dock was in sight, the captain offered to make me the new Quartermaster, despite me only being eleven years old at that point. I probably would have said yes if I hadn’t seen how beautiful the women were in Serhya. Seeing my interest in the soft bodies which always seemed to be on display in Zealor, the captain took me to his brother, who ran a pretty decent brothel at the time. He dropped me off with him and I went through the same thing I did on the boat. When I wasn’t working, I was travelling the streets of Zealor, surrounded by so much color and life that I couldn’t help but be in awe from it. Each day I was there, something new came from nowhere it seemed like. What I loved the most was that I never felt alone, despite having no real family. At least, I felt like I didn’t have any real family until a few days after my fifteenth birthday when I met a red-headed smooth talker named Ronan who was about half my age and double as confident. He was part of a nomad tribe so he wasn’t always around, but, when he was, we’d turn the entire city into a playground. My ass got in more trouble than I ever thought I would be able to get into with Ronan around, and we both had huge smiles on our faces whenever we did. I was even sent to travel with his family a few times to transport goods between the city and some neighboring villages or trading posts. We were practically brothers by the time he told me about his tribe’s “Nightingale Trial” for something called “The Solovey”. It almost broke my heart when he told me that he might not live through it and that I shouldn’t come looking for him if it turns out that way. I didn’t see him for a good number of years because of it. During those years he was gone, I became owner of the brothel once the old man passed away. Before you get any ideas, he officially signed it over to me in his will. His son was pissed that his father felt like I had been more of a son than he had, so he ran his own brothel out of spite. Believe it or not, I was about nineteen at the time and I still hadn’t been with anyone. In a few years, I turned the brothel into the greatest sin bin in Zealor history and I never partook in my own merchandise. It wasn’t until my boy, Ronan, came back that I mustered up the courage for some strange.

The Old Serhyan Adage

There’s an old saying in Serhya; “There is nothing we do which we don’t want to.” I heard that for the first time during the first year as the brothel’s owner. A female Dragonborn who came to me, wanting to be part of my house, told me that when I asked why she would leave a comfortable home in the marshlands to pleasure the highest bidder in Zealor almost every night. I had her working the next night and caught a smile on her face that grew wider with each client. When my brother, Ronan, came back and let all of my workers know that I still hadn’t got laid, I shouldn’t have been surprised when she was the most eager to show me a good time. I’ll be honest, I never saw myself getting with a Dragonborn, but I got to say that that was the best damn night of my life. Well...maybe a very close second. After a little over six long years, I had my brother back. Despite being older, stronger, missing an eye and carrying a massive hammer which should have broke his back in two, it was still the same Ronan as before. He told me that he was in some sort of magical coma that somehow kept his body alive, well, and healthy. So healthy, in fact, that he wanted to make up for as much lost time as possible. His jaw dropped when he heard about my rise to fame as the brothel’s new owner and I was more than happy to help my boy out. Unfortunately, I forgot to tell him about the importance of pulling out. For almost an entire week, he went from girl to girl in my house, tasting everything I had available. I told all of my workers not to ask for payment, and they were more than happy with not getting paid. Laying with the wielder of the Solovey was more than enough payment for all of them. The fact that he was more handsome than half the guys in the city helped pay for it as well. However, he always paid up front, despite many insisting that he didn’t need to. Just from that, he gained the respect of my entire house quicker than snake venom. Unfortunately, one of them decided that she wanted the fame of mothering the child of the Solovey’s wielder instead of just laying with him for a single night. It’s been nine years since Najka was born and none of us know if she’s actually Ronan’s or not. Ronan would give up the world for her either way. After giving birth to Najka, Selise, her mother, decided to keep her from him for about a year or so. As a whore in a brothel, she knew she didn’t want to raise her in a place like this, so she told Ronan about her and he jumped at the chance of being a father. He raised her as best as any father could for almost a decade. I had the great honor of being her “Uncle Pho” and godfather. Whenever he had business in town, I’d turn my house into a sort of a daycare for her. She didn’t fully grasp what was actually happening here until she got older anyway. She just thought that everyone liked to wrestle and scream with each other for no reason. When she turned nine, Ronan did something I would have never expected. We were walking around Zealor together when he told me his plans.

“Wait, you’re leaving?” I asked, dumbfounded.

With a sigh, Ronan responded, “Yup, grabbing a boat to Kalldor in a few minutes. I have to. There’s something I need to do and I can’t bring her along.”

I placed my hand on his shoulder and said, “Well, I’ll check in on her whenever she comes to the city. I got work on my Oasis soon, which is near your tribe’s walking pattern so I could join them for a mile or two. She ain’t staying in the house, though.”

“I know,” he stated, “I already told her about everything. Well, everything I felt she needed to hear, at least.”

“What should I do if she asks about when you’ll be back?” I asked, worried about what she’d want to do.

“I bought a pair of Sending Stones and I’m leaving one with her,” he told me, still staring at the docks, “If she ever gets too lonely, she can send me a message on that.”

I chuckled a bit before saying, “Look at you, Ro! Pining for that ‘Responsible Father’ title, I see!”

He chuckled before taking a deep breath. He continued, “Pho, I know you got other plans, but-”

“Say no more,” I interrupted, “I’ll keep track of her as if she was the most precious emerald in Serhya.”

“She is, Pho,” he responded, sternly, “She is.”

I glanced over and saw him with a look serious enough to make a war general back down. I smirked a bit, seeing my best friend more responsible and concerned than I ever thought he was capable of.

I put him in a headlock as I teased him, saying, “Hey, you get any more serious, I’m going to have to tell the girls at the brothel to hide their smiles whenever you come around.”

Cracking up, he responded with, “You better tell the guys, too. I pretended to flirt with a Half-Orc and I swear he blushed at me.”

Putting up my fingers, I playfully said, “ ‘Pretended?’ I could’ve sworn you were serious with half the guys in my house! Even me, that one time.”

“Who said that I wasn’t?” he said with a straight voice.

I released his head as we both erupted into laughter. We laughed so hard that my eyes started to water. I wiped away a tear as I said, “You stay safe, you hear me? I’d rather not cross the Solemn Sea to collect your handsome corpse, ‘Nightingale’.”

“You have some courage while I’m gone, alright?” he spouted back, stone faced.

I nervously chuckled as I asked, “Courage with what?”

“With that Halfling woman you fast-tracked up the ladder,” he said with full confidence. “She joined your house less than a few months ago and you already have her pined as your replacement while you start that...uh...”

“Oasis,” I reminded him.

“Oasis! That’s what it was,” he shot back at me, “But, seriously, I gave you a niece. I’d like to have one as well, brother.”

“Pfft! Me and that Haifling? Whaaaaaaat? Nothing’s happening there,” I shakily retorted.

“You truly are a shit liar, Pho,” he said, laughing a bit.

I paused and looked down at my hands for a second. I sighed as I said, “Yeah, you always could see through my bullshit, Ro. Unfortunately, what ain’t bullshit is that ship of yours that’s taking off in about ten minutes.”

We both stood up and took a deep breath before drawing each other in for a hug.

He whispered to me, “Thanks for being my brother.”

I whispered back, “Thanks for not dying to that thing on your back.”

I slapped him on the back of his neck as I said, “Now, move, fool! The ship’s dropping its sails.”

He rushed off and caught the ship just before the wind carried it off, shaking hands with a purple-skinned Tiefling. Najka, who had been searching for us for a little bit, caught up and dashed right past me. She ran all the way to the end of the dock and almost fell off into the water as she waved goodbye to her father. I walked her back and asked about where she got a stuffed doll of an odd-looking mastiff that seemed to be wrinkly with a slightly squished face. She told me that some old lady said that it’s a special breed of dog which hasn’t been seen in decades. We continued to talk about it until I returned her to her grandparents.

Epilogue

It’s been a few months since Ronan left for Kalldor and life’s been pretty good. My Oasis is damn near ready to be home to a sizable village’s worth of people. I kept its name simple because I wanted it to be known not just as an oasis, but as “The Oasis”. Damn near all of Serhya lives under a government that chooses its highest according to wealth. As the previous owner of the greatest brothel in Zealor history, I had become a Lord of the Sands and I felt the need to make my own town since Zealor’s technically ruled by a kid. I should have told Zita that before leaving her the brothel. I made the right move placing my Halfling girl in charge of the brothel. She’s made more money keeping everyone happy, healthy, and safe than she ever did telling guys to either get it up or shut up when some clients only wanted a shoulder to cry on. I visit her whenever I return to the city. I check in on the brothel and she always finds a way to make me stay an extra night or two. Najka’s been happy and Selise is starting to try to develop a relationship with her, now that she’s a barmaid instead of a member of my house. Najka wants to see her dad again and she always asks if I’ve seen him when I check in on her. She seems to always get sadder when I tell her that I haven’t. I always change the subject to keep her spirits high, and she told me that she met “Auntie” when she and her grandfather went to the brothel asking for me once. She said that she was sweet to her and that it was fun talking to someone the same height as her. I smiled wider than I thought when I heard that. The only thing that worries me is that there seems to be some scary reports coming from all across Serhya. I’ve heard some travelers speak of a monster in the bogs on the west coast that spit acid. Others have talked about seeing activity at ruins we all thought were uninhabited for years. The worse I’ve heard of is the pyramids. Of all the awful legends I’ve heard of in regards to the history of Serhya, the absolute worst have been surrounded the pyramids. I’m sure it’s nothing, but paranoia stems from caution according to my old ship captain and, right now, I’m more paranoid than a Drow running from the Underdark. Even if some issues do come, it doesn’t matter too much. I’m not the same Scarab that crawled off of a ship. I’m a Sand Lord now and I’ll be damned if anyone’s taking that from me. The only thing that does matter is if I can keep my family from being caught in the crossfire.

the only Human in their coven

the only one that actually Went to School and Functions in Human Society

I mean MJ’s also a human that underwent Blood Ritual training but

Jinjin likes to remember that he’s the only one who Suffered School

Sometimes he gets annoyed that everyone else gets to have shortcuts for things while he has to do things manually sometimes

But also sometimes stupid things happen that make him glad he’s a regular human

And it’s hilarious sometimes seeing the other magic users flounder at simple tasks that normal people do without magic anyway

A confused Bin @ the microwave because he’s never had to use a microwave to heat up his food before

He kind of just scatters crystals around whatever needs to be heated up and mutters a quick Heating spell and waits for it to work

So when Jinjin bungs a bowl of ramyeon in the microwave and takes it out after three minutes and his noodles are cooked Bin is pretty shocked

Cue Bin spending the rest of the day prodding the microwave and suspiciously putting different things in

Rocky muttering angrily at the air conditioning whenever it breaks down because back at the Bangtan coven he usually got Jimin or Taehyung to help him ~magic~ it better

Jinjin grabbing a ladder and prodding around the air conditioning unit until it starts blasting cold air again and Rocky is shookt

came for Rocky…

has been Rocky’s best friend since forever

ok not forever but it’s pretty close

literally knows everything about Rocky, from Rocky’s first crush to what can make Rocky laugh until his stomach hurts

can tell from Rocky’s eyes when he’s annoyed, happy, flustered etc even if his face is covered

it alarms the rest of Astro how accurate it is sometimes because Rocky’d come in looking stormy and everyone’d freeze up but Jinjin would just reach behind him for a sandwich and toss it over to Rocky and the Park Minhyuk™ Beam would come out immediately

the cutest!!!!

I love the Park Minhyuk™ Beam

used to get into all sorts of shit with Rocky

which was literally all the time since Rocky didn’t go to school

that one time Rocky stole a Luck potion from Yoongi’s stash to split with Jinjin the day before Jinjin’s final exam

and replaced the potion with green soda

obviously got caught since soda looks nothing close to the bubbling, glittery (and might I add, opaque) lime green potion

rip my poor boy

when Yoongi found out Jin was 80% sure shit was about to go down so he slipped like 10 Calming crystals around Yoongi’s potions room and sent his boyfriend in to reason with Yoongi

because I mean, Rocky didn’t steal it for his own personal gain or anything he truly genuinely wanted to help his best friend

and for some reason it never crossed his mind that he could have just asked Yoongi or bought it from Yoongi lmao

cue a fumbling Namjoon trying to explain to a calm but annoyed Yoongi what a young teen with access to a potions stash’s thought process might have been

and a thirteen-year-old Rocky sliding back in through the fence and into the potions room only to meet with a very unimpressed Namjoon and a very unamused Yoongi and a very worried Jin hovering by the door

I mean, sure he was grounded and stuff but what stuck with both Jinjin and Rocky after the whole encounter was

1) Yoongi: “if you wanted a Luck potion that badly, you should have asked, bought it or learned how to make it.”

2) Yoongi: “if you needed a Luck potion that urgently, you should have stolen it better.”

Cue a very excited Taehyung teaching Rocky and Jinjin how to steal things without people noticing

Also cue a frazzled Bangtan coven house when they start realising things have been going missing & a cackling Taehyung & a very innocent-looking Rocky

Because what???? Park Minhyuk stealing things????? Unheard of in this house !!

Also cue a very frustrated Jungkook when he woke up to all his underwear gone rip

but that wasn’t so much stealing as Taehyung and Rocky pulling pranks

3) that Yoongi’s Luck potions were A+ and they really did work, as shown by Jinjin’s 99% on the final

anyways yes they got up to a lot of different shenanigans

moved into the Astro coven so he could make sure his best friend wasn’t being kidnapped by a serial murderer

has anyone watched Eunwoo on crime scene 3 he was very good he was beautiful I 10000% recommend watching it

I recommend the series in general but anyway

I mean with someone so handsome can you ever trust them

Jinjin thinks not

The only handsome person you can ever trust, in Jinjin’s opinion is Jinjin

And so he meets Eunwoo and is introduced to Bin and gets along with Bin like a house on fire

…stayed for MJ

hooooo boy are you ready for this

the first time MJ comes over it’s with a gigantic batch of slightly burnt brownies

and this was before Sanha came in so the house was still relatively quiet

and so Rocky’s in his room in the basement and Eunwoo and Bin are upstairs on the second floor doing who-knows-what

and Jinjin’s the only one free to open the door

and so he does

MJ (gigantic beam): “HI HELLO I’M MJ I LIVE NEXT DOOR & I THOUGHT YOU GUYS LOOKED REALLY FRIENDLY SO I’M HERE TO DELIVER BROWNIES”

Jinjin: (loading screen)

MJ: “trust me thEY’RE REALLY GOOD BROWNIES”

Jinjin, muffled behind a tray full of brownie: “oh my god are you usually this loud”

MJ: “whAT??”

Jinjin, scrambling: “WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME INTO OUR HOUSE”

MJ: (beaming intensifies)

And so this is how Rocky finds Myungjin sitting around the kitchen, brownie crumbs all over the counter and MJ talking a mile a minute about the weather and Jinjin trying to form a sentence in his head without it being blasted to pieces by MJ’s smile

And this is how Binu finds them in the kitchen, with much less brownie than MJ came with and 3stro standing against the kitchen wall trying to determine who was the tallest

(spoilers, it was Rocky)

reminder that at this point MJ all thought they were human and 3stro thought MJ didn’t know about magic so

I mean, all in all they’re pretty good at pretending they’re non-magical

But MJ’s grown up with KNK and their portion of the supernatural community

And so when he sees small (anti-Burning) crystals tucked into different corners of the kitchen, courtesy of That Time Jinjin Fell Asleep While Cooking, he smiles to himself

At least he doesn't have to explain to Jinjin why his in-laws-to-be don’t eat dinner

Cue MJ casually pointing out the crystals: “oh where did u get those we usually order them from the VIXX coven”

Bin: falls out of his chair

Jinjin, turns pale and stammers a bit before Eunwoo sensibly whacks the back of his head and proudly pats Bin’s empty chair

Eunwoo: “yeah we have our own Charmer here”

Rocky: “pls don't say charmer ever again he’s nowhere near charming”

Eunwoo, opening his mouth to rebut but blushing and closing it on second thought

Wow way to go vivi sneaking a little binu in again

runs a flower store as a front for the Astro coven house

I mean he literally has a garden in their backyard full of weird-ass flowers and herbs that he has to tend to because Rocky needs them for his potions

He might as well plant a few more and make it a “family” business

I mean the extra income is always welcome

And so he set up an online store for people to order flowers and arrangements and bouquets with

Isn’t a botany witch but !! still ahs green fingers so his plants all grow very well without magic thank you very much

*without that much magic

Got Bin to enchant his entire garden to be anti-pest so he can label himself “organic” and “pesticide-free” for those who looked for stuff like that

Gets Rocky to brew a couple potions for the cut flowers that keep them fresher longer so he can provide fresh flowers all year round regardless of the season

Also gets Bin to charm some of them once in a while to sparkle a little extra or seem less dead

So really, without that much magic,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Sells mostly to magic users, although there are a few clueless humans who place orders on his online store

Once got called in to decorate a house by a mysterious online customer with the name Michael Jackson ‘to make the house seem less… dead!’

It was KNK’s house

Jinjin was not amused

Inseong was very pleased though so there was that

also manages their finances and other household things, the resident Dad™

with the help of MJ of course

so they basically do things like balance Bin’s, Eunwoo’s and Rocky’s books in addition to their own

and take a little money out of each account to pay for stuff like electricity and food and soap and random stuff

Jinjin places orders for whatever they need (like vials or ladles or bandages) along with his own orders to save on shipping and stuff

It’s like a very well-run set-up, if Jinjin says so himself

Takes care of their general food situation as well with MJ

Ok listen it’s so domestic alright

MJ chopping vegetables and singing & Jinjin standing at a pot stirring and humming along and staring at MJ being loud and silly

Jinjin’s face softening into a smile and just

Wow

Wow he’s so soft for this beautiful man who beamed his way into his life

MJ meeting Jinjin’s eyes and seeing this wonderfully soft look on his face and

“FRICKITY FRACK IT’S BURNING”

cue a mad scramble to get the pot off the stove

but Mj doesn’t forget that look, no, he keeps it in his mind like a kid keeps candy tucked away in his pocket, to be pulled out on a bad day and to ponder over and savour

part of the Needs to Be Protected Squad (1/2)

we all know MJ’s 2/2

squeaks whenever someone rings the doorbell

at first they had a very serious meeting as to who was allowed to answer the doorbell and who wasn’t

Rocky was very against Jinjin answering the doorbell because I mean you’re never sure who’s ringing it – it might be someone magical looking to kidnap Jinjin or something

But Eunwoo pointed out Jinjin, being the only Human, was also the only one who could actually properly appear Human in case it really was a Human knocking on their door

Given that Bin changes hair colour nearly every week or so and usually has blue energy trailing after him

And that Rocky’s stuck in the basement nearly all the time and can never hear the doorbell anyway

And Eunwoo can’t really get up in the middle of treating a patient

And so it was Jinjin

But usually whoever rings the doorbell turns out to be human after all

Like that one kid who accidentally kicked a ball into KNK’s garden and was too afraid of ‘the tall, scary uncles’ to go and rummage in their garden for it

And so Jinjin had to go do it for him

Or that one grandma who fussed over ‘all those handsome boys in the house’ and really she’s concerned if they’re all eating well because they look like they live alone poor dears

And so now she makes them kimchi and tofu on a regular basis in exchange for MJ and Jinjin coming over sometimes to repair things in her house or to help her with things

So really MJ and Jinjin are the neighbourhood sweethearts fight me on this

And so this is more or less how Jinjin’s made a couple friends up and down the street

But they all turn out to be human mostly because those who ring the doorbell looking for Eunwoo or Bin or Rocky or MJ ring a separate doorbell, hidden under layers of spells and only visible to magic users

but also after those couple times Bin fell asleep and didn’t unlock the door to let the client up, all of Bin’s clients all kind of learnt to ring the main doorbell in addition to Bin’s to let everyone else in the house know

i should probably introduce the fantagio girls at some point too idk

“You forgot about my birthday!” “In my defence, I forget about a lot of things”

Smalls/Specs (ok my ship for smalls is smalls/specs/romeo but this prompt doesn’t really lend itself to OT3 so! specs/smalls and kinda ro/specs)

It is Specs’ birthday. The very special one day of the year when he walks with a little extra bounce in his step and gets noticed by the other boys just a little more. Newsies have been wishing him happy birthday all day, and Mr. Jacobi gave him a free glass of seltzer. Kloppman told him he didn’t have to pay for staying tonight, and some of the guys gave him a few extra pennies. It wasn’t much, but it was wonderful. All he needed now to make the day complete is to see Smalls. So he starts the trek over to the Bronx. It’s quite a hike but Smalls meets him halfway, in Washington heights, which is technically on Bronx turf, but pretty damn close to the edge. All day he had been excited about getting to spend time alone with her. Lately Romeo had been tagging along, which was fine, but he pulled rank today and got Ro to stay home.

Smalls was sitting on a stoop eating an apple when he walked up and she smiled at him and tossed him an extra apple from her coat pocket. He looked at her,

“Hey now, don’t look at me like that, I bought it fair an square this time,” she said and he laughed,

“Sure ya did,”

“Would I lie to ya?”

“Yeah. You have,” he points out and she frowns,

“That there's ugly talk for such a beautiful day,” she comments and he smiles,

“And what makes it such a beautiful day?” he asks and she laughs,

“Didn’t ya hear? We finally settled that crap wit’ Brooklyn. Spot sent a bunch of guys through Queens to get to us, and Queens was not too happy about that, so we ganged up on ‘em. Beat the crap outta six of them personally,” she brags,

“Well crap Smalls, are you ok?” he asks and she shoves his shoulder,

“I’m fine, you know as well as I do that those so called tough Brooklyn kids ain’t ever stood a chance against Bronx kids in a fight. The toughest kid they got is Spot, and he ain’t so scary,” she comments,

“Don’t let Racer hear ya saying that,” he jokes and she smiles at him, grabbing his hand and lacing her fingers through it. They walk for a bit along the river and keep a steady banter going, talking about everything and anything, but Smalls never says anything about his birthday. Finally they walk to the boundary of Bronx and Manhattan, and she pauses. He can cross lines all he wants, but Smalls is a leader and the rules are different for her. She leans up and kisses his cheek and he frowns,

“What day is it?” he asks carefully,

“Aw hell if I know,” she says and he pulls back,

“You forgot about my birthday!” he says accusingly and her mouth drops open,

“In my defence, I forget about a lot of things,” she says quickly,

“Yeah sure,” he says, turning and walking away, crossing into Manhattan,

“Hey! Specs I’m sorry, come back,” she shouts after him, but he just keeps walking. He walks until he gets to the lodging house and pauses. He doesn’t really want to go inside but there isn’t really anywhere else he can go. He walks two more blocks to an abandoned apartment building and climbs up the fire escape to the roof and sits on the edge, dangling his legs over the street below. He hears someone clattering up the escape behind him and half hopes it’s Smalls. It isn’t, of course, just Romeo.

“Hey Specs,” he greets, walking over and sitting next to him,

“What do you want?”

“Just to sit. Maybe talk a little, but you don’t seem to be in a talking mood,” Romeo states, and Specs snorts,

“No, not really,”

Romeo is quiet for a bit,

“…Smalls forget your birthday?” he asks quietly and Specs nods,

“How did ya know?” he asks and Romeo smiles sadly,

“Bronx is run awfully different than Manhattan is Specs,”

“How do ya mean?”

“They don’t do anything for birthdays. Hell, I don’t even think half of ‘em know when their birthdays are,” he says

“Why not?”

“Hell if I know, you’d half to ask Smalls about that,” he replies and Specs frowns. They sit for a while longer, enjoying the view and Romeo turns to look at Specs,

“Happy birthday Specs,” he says softly,

“Thanks.”

I watched it now and I don't it. Remember in your last review you said u dislike how spn always does the same with the ambiguity; but /this/ is the thing I dislike having s/t major happen like Crowley saving Cas and it not changing/having no longlasting impact on any or their dynamic as seen with Sam/Dean/Crowley. With Crowley but also with Cas who has had one of his biggest moments in his story, is just tossed aside doing his day job and giving off screen plot updates.

Look, on good days I tell myself it just about works, right, because both Sam and Dean basically have the emotional range of a teaspoon and they don’t want to talk to each other for various reasons and also we’ve got this weird show, yeah, where sometimes weeks and weeks pass between two episodes, so while we’re still sitting here crying and giffing things, for them - they haven’t moved on, exactly, but they’ve been on three other hunts and they’ve killed stuff and they’ve been slammed into walls and stabbed and cursed, so, who even knows.

So, yes, if you squint, it sort of makes sense.

But also: it really doesn’t. Those are narrative choices, aren’t they? Because I’m still convinced Dean did say something about his mom to that social worker, Beth, and they didn’t show us that. And it’s possible Sam had some awkward exchange with a librarian or a waitress or, hell, someone at Asa’s funeral - they never showed us that either. And what about nurses and doctors? I don’t know how believable it is that they never need a professional to patch them up, and moments like those - you’re in shock, perhaps, and your adrenaline is still up and your heart is beating boom boom BOOM - I’m not saying they’d tell people about monsters, but we know they do confide in other people sometimes. Look at Dean and that priest, or Dean and werewolf widow Michelle - I’m sure there were a lot of other cases. They’re only human, after all. And, well, the same goes for everything else: those dead people they carry on their backs like heavy chains and never talk about, new monsters and new freakishness that’s never mentioned again, heavy trauma seemingly unremembered, and, yes, momentous events that apparently change nothing, like Cas being afraid to leave the Bunker and Crowley’s suddenly selflessness.

Ultimately, I think it all comes down to the usual doublespeak. They’ve got a show about monsters and gore, so that’s what they keep filming. When I first joined the fandom, I asked around about this, and someone told me it was a CW problem - that all their shows are aimed at women - think Jane the Virgin, The Vampire Diaries and Supergirl - and with this one muscle cars and blazing guns extravaganza, they wanted a piece of the male demographics, so by God, they’re fighting to keep it. I really don’t know enough about any of it to have an opinion, but it’s certainly true that Supernatural is only one step removed from those old Clint Eastwood movies: cowboy stuff with a few tears thrown in. And since they know - and we know - that Sam and Dean are not like that, they’re probably afraid that any conversation about anything will stray into chick-flick territory -

- and that will be it, goodbye male viewers and goodbye Republicans and goodbye anyone who likes to pretend men don’t have feelings and never talk about anything because being worried and guilty and anxious and overwhelmed - my God, so gay - pull yourself together and walk it off.

So I understand where you’re coming from - I feel the same way. But this show is mostly subtextual, and that’s it - love it or leave it. We spend a lot of time on those clues about Dean’s bisexuality and his love for Cas, but we could spend even more time in mapping out what goes down in all those moments we don’t see. Because we know they keep in contact with people, for instance, we know they worry (look at Dean casually mentioning to Jody he’d been wondering about how the girls were). We know they probably don’t eat fast food day in day out, if only because they look the way they do and they’re not getting any younger, so someone - probably Dean - buys groceries and cooks. We’ve seen Dean ironing clothes (and that was, like, the first time in 12 season?) but we know that must be a common occurence, as is buying those clothes, which are costumes, really, so there must be some debate between them into what pyschologists wear or whatever. We know they have many painful anniversaries, and how do they spend them? We know Sam must be going through something major right now - that God he prayed to his whole life? a fraud - the archangel who whispered to him every night for years? still around, and I’ll never believe Sam can’t feel his presence somehow - the people who burned him with a blowtorch? working with his mother - but it’s been weeks and weeks and Sam is just peachy. And we know a lot about Dean too - in fact, we know so much I won’t bore you with it.

Now, the problem is - some of it may be marketing, and other things are down to narrative choices (for instance, we’ve seen what Sam becomes when Lucifer climbs inside his mind: do we really need to see that again?*), but it’s still bizarre to watch a show like this one, which is 90% subtext and silences. Because they talk and talk about ‘going where the story leads them’ or whatever - they don’t. They insist in going in circles, because that’s the format of the show: drive somewhere, talk to people, drink bad beer, gank vampire, drive off. But stories change, and characters grow. I remember people bitching because there was no Quidditch in HP7 - and, I mean, are you for real? The Dark Lord’s taken over - there’s what amount to a military dictatorship over half of Britain - Muggleborns are being rounded up, their wands snapped in half - and you think that, what, Harry can stay at Hogwarts and play Quidditch? So here, what you’ve got is a format which used to work well with two angry young men who saw no need to talk to each other, but now - now they’re grown-ups, for fuck’s sake. And their lives actually depend on adapting their strategy around new enemies, which brings me back to Crowley.

What Buckleming did to Crowley last week is a flashing billboard of why you can’t stick to your format no matter what. Because at this point I’m pretty sure they’re planning to have Crowley betray them in some major way, again, and the problem is that good writing leads you into complicated situations you should really adjust to? Like - I may be completely off the mark, but - in Stuck in the Middle (With Me) they needed Crowley, so they wrote him in. And then it made sense that he was the only one to know about the Lance (I still think Cas is bizarelly oblivious about a lot of things concerning Heaven, but whatever), and therefore he was the only one who knew to break it. Great, done, beautiful scene, huge bit of character development. And next those two idiots have to steer the story in the ‘right’ direction again - ie, the general arc that’s been decided for the season - which means Crowley must be given a reason to be bad again or something, so they go and write that - a confusing, OOC episode full of plot holes whose only point is to give Crowley a reason to hate the Winchesters. And I’m not saying you can’t write him that way, but the problem is - that episode made me hate the Winchesters as well, because, come on - all those times they’ve gone back and forward in time and come back to life and somehow that’s not a problem, but suddenly poor wee Gavin does it and you absolutely need to kill him? And what if that had been Sam, uh? Would Dean have sent Sam back to a doomed ship without so much as a shrug? Nope, because when it’s about them, they find another way. And the fact they didn’t allow Crowley so much as a goodbye - the fact they trust Rowena over Crowley - people who spend a solid twenty minutes every episode harping on and on about family - that’s -

(That’s exactly what happened with Charlie, by the way: they needed a reason to have Dean snap, and took a shortcut. An extremely unbelievable, OOC and badly written shortcut.)

Anyway.

I don’t know what to tell you. I think my Dean, the Dean I write about, would never have been so cavalier about destroying an innocent person and someone Crowley cared about so much (the one line I liked about that episode: “In your own lizard way, I know you cared for him.”). In fact, the Dean I know would have acknowledged the huge debt he now has with Crowley - would have bought him a beer, at the very least.

(Then again, the Sam I know was affected by Lucifer’s presence - my Sam would have had some kind of faith crisis over last year’s events, and he wouldn’t have been so whatever about being locked away not once, but twice already, and he would probably have debilitating nightmares and still, despite everything, he would be sympathetic to the BMoL’s proposals because that’s who he is, or who he thinks he is: a Means and Ends kind of guy.

I think we need to accept this show has a format, and that format doesn’t leave a lot of room for plot coherence and character development, which means a lot of the actualy story will stay in the subtext and sometimes we’ll be left to explain away illogical points and general weirdness. Luckily, most of the writers seem to know what they’re doing and they’re able to fit a lot even into a MoTW episode, but other things are just wrong, and that’s why we have fanfiction.

*Just to be clear: I would love to hear more about Sam and Lucifer, and I’m convinced it could be written in a new way, and I know they’ve got the right people to work on that - my God, just look at what Berens and Dabb were able to do with a couple of werewolves - look at what Yockey’s doing with nothing at all.

[Sorry for the rant. I mostly like this show - a lot - but as I’ve said before, its inconsistency is occasionally very hard to bear. Every other show I watch, I know exactly what I can expect - in terms of quality, that is - and here - here I’m thinking they could have something that’s critically acclaimed, as well as fiercely loved, and instead they throw it away - and for what?]

Who are you and what business did you start?Hi, my name is Paul Chittenden, and I am the Founder of Bad Ass Work Gear. Our goal is to make work gear that lasts. Well, at least longer than our competitors. Let’s face it, the people we sell to are hard on their gear!Our flagship product is a very tough, heavy duty duffel bag specifically developed for the oil and gas industry, but also used by the Army, firefighters, hunters, and quite a few more creative uses.The oil and gas industry has its ups and downs. We were riding high when oil prices were up and companies were spending money on their employees. We dropped about 80% of revenue in the last downturn. 2018 and 2019 have been leveling off with more retail orders than corporate orders, averaging about $15,000 per month.imageWhat's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?I was born in Houma, Louisiana - a small town about an hour Southwest of New Orleans. I grew up wrestling alligators, fishing and hunting, drinking beer in sugarcane fields, and of course speaking with a funny Cajun accent.“I didn’t have any clue what I wanted to be when I grew up after graduation. Both my mom and dad worked in the oilfield.When I was 9, my dad got me a camouflaged bag for my hunting gear. He bought it from a little shop that specialized in heavy duty vinyl bags for offshore oilfield workers. It was tough as nails.Years later, I graduated from college with a degree in Business Management from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Our mascot is a Cayenne Pepper, and we’re called the Ragin’ Cajuns. This is probably not relevant to the story at all, but it is important to note.Now, I didn’t have any clue what I wanted to be when I grew up after graduation. However, I did know I wanted to be an entrepreneur. That was clear. I also knew that whatever I did, I didn’t want to go into the oil and gas industry.About a month after graduation, I took a job with Schlumerger, one of the largest oilfield services companies in the world. I would work offshore on oil platforms and make a ton of money. But wait, didn’t I say that was the one thing I didn’t want to do? Yep. What the hell?Anyway, I figured I could save up all the money I made to start a business. I heard a story about the founder of Raising Cane’s working in Alaska fishing salmon to raise the startup capital for his first restaurant. I could suck it up for a year or two.Working for Schlumberger, they sent me to the same little shop that I got my first hunting bag from to get my first oilfield bag. It wasn’t until I started working offshore that I realized how tough these bags really were.The bag was pretty large, because you have to stuff a ton of stuff in there since you’ll be gone for a week or more at a time: boots, coveralls, underwear, hard hat, etc. I also packed a 12-pack of gloves (one pair per day), jeans for travel days, my own pillow (because I’m a weirdo), snacks, and protein powder.I’d have a driver haul me to the coast. Then I’d take my bag and throw in on the gravel while I grab all my other gear, a tool box, a hand pump, and some other miscellaneous tooling. Then, I grab everything and head to a supply vessel. I’d dump all of my gear on the back deck of the boat for the 6-20 hour ride out to the platform. Sometimes it would storm and the bag would get rained on and splashed from the high seas. Most times, it stayed dry and baked in the heat.Once we’d reach the drilling rig or platform, I’d have to throw all my gear into a personnel basket, and be lifted 150 feet from the vessel into the air up onto the drilling rig or platform deck. It looked something like this:imageThen, once again, I’d take all my gear and throw it out the basket onto the grating of the platform. The pic above is a drilling rig, so at least here the deck is steel plate and not too rough.Long story short, traditional bags didn’t hold up long to this abuse, but these heavy duty vinyl bags did.I was making good money, but the time away from family and friends was taking its toll. I missed holidays, birthday parties, and family gatherings. I took all the money I made and invested it in the stock market, hoping to make my money grow. Instead, I invested just before the stock crash and lost half of it. So much for that stockpile.In 2008, I took a job with GE in their Oil and Gas division in Houston, Texas. Things were good. I was making less money than my offshore salary, but I was in decent shape. I got to travel, and manage some interesting projects. I picked up a book called the 4HWW and decided to bootstrap something since my savings was still all in the stock market.I don’t know why, but the bag thing was my first good idea. There was nothing like it in Houston or in the emerging land based oilfield hot spots.I threw together a quick website with Wordpress. I used Elance (now UpWork) to hire someone to make some product renderings. Once everything was up, orders slowly started rolling in.Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.Okay, maybe I lied. Orders didn’t really roll in. I didn’t have a way to take payments, so it was really just product inquiries. But, my product was validated.The problem was, I didn’t have a product. I scrambled to find a manufacturer because of course, I had no idea how to sew a button back on a pair of pants, much less sew a frickin’ bag.First, I hit ThomasNet and searched for manufacturers. Then I sent them my own bags (by this time I had several) for prototyping, and I had a few mark-ups of my product renderings for slight changes to the design.imageFinding a good manufacturer was a pain in the ass.Most manufacturers wanted a minimum run of 1000 bags per color, per size, per style. I wanted to offer 3 sizes, 2 styles and at least 4 colors. Impossible.Every company wants the color of their bag to match their uniform. So standardizing color wasn’t going to be possible, and I was at a major roadblock.I had to go custom and made to order. It was the only way.I was willing to invest $500 on this project. I couldn’t buy an industrial sewing machine for that.Eventually, I settled on Craigslist. Houston has a ton of sewing talent so I posted a job on Craiglist. There was a lot of noise, but I also had a few hits from some industrial sewing workers looking for some side work. I worked out a deal to pay per piece, and started testing sewing contractors. It took a while to get the quality and craftsmanship to the desired level, but it worked out quite well. They were sewing from home. After a while, one of my seamstresses got tired of having me stop by the house to pick up orders. She was willing to ship them out for me if I bought her a label maker. Done deal. After that, I did this with the other sewing contractors as well.Now, I don’t have to touch product. I'm a sales, marketing, and customer service.Describe the process of launching the business.I built the website myself using a Wordpress theme. This probably took the longest because I had no idea what I was doing. Though, it was simple enough to learn.I made my first logo in Microsoft Word. Take a look at that bad boy!imageIt took about 8 weeks from my first inquiry to the time that I had manufacturing figured out. I invested $500 in vinyl, industrial webbing, zippers, and sewing materials for my team to start manufacturing.I had a product page up with my mock-up images. Instead of taking the customer to a payment page, it redirected them to a contact form so I could collect their email address. I had a few dozen emails on my waiting list so the next step was to contact them and let them know we were open for business.I got my first bulk order, selling 200 bags to a oil and gas contractor for their employees, in my 2nd month of operation. We have been profitable ever since.The biggest lesson here is to just start.There is a good quote from Richard Branson, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes - then learn how to do it later.”Get started, be determined, and persistent.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?Branding has been our key differentiator. I wanted to think of something really manly, tough, and something that would resonate with blue collar workers. Something Bad Ass.Bad Ass Work Bags stood out to me. Here’s one of our earlier slider images.imageWe later re-branded to Bad Ass Work Gear.Our initial growth was driven by word of mouth. Guys wanted a “Bad Ass Work Bag.”Since I was in the oilfield, I started hearing people talking about these new indestructible bags. There were similar, less Bad Ass bags out there. I’d hear stories from friends and family in the field saying that guys were joking around with people with these “inferior” bags that theirs was Bad Ass!We included Bad Ass Work Gear stickers in all our orders. I had friends sending me photos of our stickers in galleys and drill shacks from remote places such as Alaska and North Dakota.Best of all was when I started seeing my bags in airports where oilfield workers frequent.Eventually, our SEO efforts started taking hold, we started receiving a steady stream of organic traffic. We really dialed in on our initial keyword research, and built some initial links. Unfortunately, the tactics we used back in 2013 won’t work today!All our vinyl duffel bags are made right here in the good ‘ole USA. Unfortunately, that means our margins are pretty slim compared to some of our competitors outsourcing to low cost Asian manufacturers.The low margins made our attempts at paid ads unprofitable. We still haven’t figured this one out.Customer service is critical. People recommend us because we offer “Bad Ass” customer service. I’ve had one truly unhappy customer in seven years that we couldn’t rectify. Other than that, our customer service turns even upset customers into raving fans.How are you doing today and what does the future look like?2018 was our best year yet, and we are currently on track to beat last year’s numbers.In 2015 - 2017, the downturn in oil prices put a serious damper on our growth. Companies stopped buying bags, oilfield gloves, and other extras for their employees and our revenues dropped by 80%. The price of oil is pretty cyclical, and we can expect to see these drops every few years.We saw a big need for diversification in our business, and we began researching other occupations which are in need of tough gear. We didn’t have to do a lot of researching. I mean, the answer was already right in our face. Firefighters were already buying our gear bags even though they weren’t specifically made for that purpose.We spent the better part of 2018 designing a new line of firefighter bags. It’s been a slower process than I had hoped, but we plan to release the first five designs before the end of August.Product photos are finished, and the next step is to simply load them on the website.Our plans are to continue diversifying our product lines and build a stronger company.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?We were definitely blindsided by the downturn in oil and gas.We were having record growth every year until things dropped off. I wish I would have seen the need for diversification sooner so that we could have planned for it. Luckily, our lean structure helped with weathering the downturn as our competitors folded.We learned the importance of brand. Our customers do not flinch at paying more for a high quality, made in the good ‘ole USA, Bad Ass Work Bag - even when competing bags are half the price.Our name speaks for itself. Of course, the quality HAS to live up to the name. I could only imagine if our product was crap, how fast people would be making fun of us everywhere. Our bags are tough, like our customers. We constantly get emails thanking us and some great stories (bags flying out trucks with only a some scuffed vinyl).We utilized product reviews for social proof. When people see all the positive reviews from fellow oilfield workers, it's a no brainer to purchase from us.Our reorder rate is awfully low when compared with other businesses. With such positive reviews and excitement around our product, it took me a while to figure out what was going on.Our product is very niche.Our product lasts a long time.I can run through a bag in a year, but evidently others aren’t as hard on their bags as I am. In fact, I got an email from my very first customer 5 years after his first purchase. It said,“After you read the below messages from way back when, and revel in how quick five years flew by like I did, I want you to know that I am STILL running the same bag and have never had a lick of trouble with it. Impeccable quality, unrivaled toughness, and a true,top-notch, BAD ASS bag.”Our products are lasting too long! I see why the electronics industry invented planned obsolescence.If I started a new ecommerce company today, I would pick a broader niche and choose a consumable product so that I could increase our customer lifetime value.What platform/tools do you use for your business?We use Wordpress with Woocommerce for our shopping cart. We have AppSumo to help capture emails which in turn are added to our Mailchimp ecommerce flows. After a purchase, our email flows end in a review request utilizing Stamped.io.We’re a big fan of Sumo to capture leads and then utilize Mailchimpfor our ecommerce email flows.For SEO, we have a subscription to AHREFs.We’ve hired for various services with UpWork for larger tasks (blog writing,etc.) and Fiver for smaller tasks (image editing, etc.).What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris - This is the book that made me make the jump to start Bad Ass Work Gear. I’ve also designed it to be low workload. I can literally run Bad Ass Work Gear in 4 hours per week, but I typically put in more because it is fun.Ezra Firestone - Simply get on Ezra or SmartMarketer’s email list. You’ll learn a ton about ecommerce and how to scale your online store just from their free material.Ecommerce Influence Podcast - Great content on e-commerce here as well.Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?A lot of new entrepreneurs are looking to make a quick buck. I think the most important thing is finding something that interests you. Maybe follow your passion, or find something that interests you enough that it has the potential to turn into your passion.Starting a business is hard work. Often, it is lonely work. You have to be persistent. A lot of people give up, just before their business is about to take the next step. Working around your passion will keep you interested longer and set you up for success.Find a mentor. A mentor isn’t necessarily an old rich guy willing to take you under his wing. Books, podcasts, masterminds, Facebook groups, can all be good mentoring opportunities. Some of my best mentors are people I’ve never had the chance to meet. Will i be double paying for house insurance?

I have had a 3 year personal loan on my house with a balloon payment on the end, and i am Re-financing the house to include my taxes/insurance with a conventional 30 year note. I have already paid my 2010 property Tax, and my 2011 house insurance is due March 21st. I am going to the bank today, will i actually have to pay my insurance come March 21st or is that something the bank does?

[SF] The wires tell me to do things

Growing up, I always dreamed of having a large parcel of land in the country. I didn’t necessarily want to be a farmer, I just liked the idea of a rural buffer zone between me and my nearest neighbors. I enjoy walks in the woods and exploring nature. After saving for a number of years, I accumulated what I hoped would be a decent down payment on some property. I was in for a real surprise at how little my hard-earned money would buy in the financial boom of the past few years. Everyone was relocating to the countryside and land was selling at a premium.

It was a punch in the gut. Once I decided to start looking, I suppose I had my mind made up. I wanted to buy a new home and property now. The thought of having to wait five or ten more years before fulfilling my dream was a crushing blow. It led to a humbling reduction in my personal standards and forced me to widen my search area of consideration. All of a sudden, I was looking at far less desirable properties which had swamps or unsightly cell towers. It was depressing to realize what was available in my price range but I was done waiting.

One day my real estate agent sent me to look at a good sized property a couple miles outside my preferred travel radius. I didn’t want to drive long distances to my job but this was just 4 more miles than I had considered before. At first I couldn’t believe it. It was so much nicer than the pitiful dregs I had considered in the past month. It was almost twice the land and had a nice house and great view of the nearby mountains. There was a large creek in the back I could kayak in, and despite being very remote, it was close to a major road. That meant I could make up for the longer drive to work with less weaving on small country highways.

The catch? Oh, there’s always a catch and this one was significant. The property has high tension power lines running across part of it. Besides killing the scenery and view for a significant portion of the land, those wires have been reported to cause cancer. I’d had a brutal reality check for the past month. Because of that, my resistance to settling for less than I wanted was worn down.

I was tired of looking and dealing with constant disappointment. After a few days to absorb the idea, I told my agent I was ready to sign the paperwork. The rest of the property was beautiful and exactly what I wanted. I hoped I could overlook those unsightly wires over time and move past the singular blight. My loan and closing date went without a hitch. All of a sudden it was for real. I was the property holder.

Country living took some getting used to. In place of road noises and the sounds of civilization, there were numerous wild animal and nature sounds. There were birds chattering all night. Trees swayed in the breeze and cracked from flexing. Sound carries for miles in the open night air. I found it difficult to sleep at times. My transition to country living was also hampered by odd buzzing noises I heard at times. The sound was like a monotone whisper or a nest of angry bees.

One night I was so baffled by it that I got dressed and walked around the back of my property in the dark. With a little searching, I tracked down the source of the strange buzzing sound. It was coming from the high tension power lines. The ‘chattering’ and buzzing was apparently just raw voltage coursing through the thick electrical wires overhead. Who knows how much raw power flows through the miles of heavy copper line? Initially I was relieved there was an explanation but over time I grew troubled again.

As I lay in bed at night, the constant ‘electrical symphony’ kept me up. The longer I listened, the less it seemed random. I tried to drown it out but the vibrating patterns gave way to recognizable syllables. It was almost like hearing a human conversation, just out of earshot. First there would be a ‘word’ or two which stood out among the electronic gibberish, then entire English ‘phrases’ became clear. The ‘spirit’ of electrical power was ‘talking’ to me! Initially I hoped I was dreaming. Only that could explain why I was hearing words in the normal transfer of voltage from one place to another.

The words I picked out at first were innocuous and unrelated. ‘Seize’, ‘strike’, ‘zephyr’, ‘certified’, and ‘pull’. Odd phrases like that. It made no sense in the random context of unrelated things but I kept listening. It was incredibly hypnotic and fascinating. Once the sun came up, birds and other nature sounds drowned it out. From then it was impossible to follow any longer. After a few more sleepless nights, my level of comprehension and understanding grew exponentially. I was picking out entire phrases and whole sentences. My ears learned how to translate the dull, monotone pulses and buzzing into words. I was finally in tune with the mysterious electrical entity and how it delivered its cryptic message.

Naturally my employment suffered greatly. I missed a lot of work. I tried to sleep a little bit during the day, just so I could listen to what it was saying when the environment was most clear. I felt compelled to know the wire’s secret wisdom; whatever that might be. I alone was privy to an incredible opportunity and didn’t want to squander it. In the end I did whatever seemed necessary to communicate with the mysterious entity which sought to bridge a relationship with humanity.

In time, the phrases and sentences took on a confusing narrative. They exhorted me to do ‘things’. These controversial actions would be highly illegal but the electrical voice explained why it was imperative that I do them anyway. Frankly, I still resisted. Fiercely. I had grave concerns about the chilling things it demanded I do. Killing people is obviously wrong and no amount of justification could ordinarily sway me to go through with such things but the power was relentlessly persuasive. It slowly wore away my resistance.

The electrical entity behind the dark orders was insistent. It demanded I follow through with the violence, without question. The more I tried to reason against the decree, the more it dug in. I hadn’t slept for days. I was hyper-focused on everything which was said. The more it repeated itself, the more I came to accept the mission. I had to do it. There was no other way. Only then would it let me sleep and share a deeper level of truth with me. I’d long since lost my job and hadn’t paid any bills in months. My savings were almost exhausted. The high tension power lines promised great financial rewards and highly sought answers to the secrets of the universe. All I had to do was comply in full. There was no more resistance left within me. I was completely on board.

I went to gather the supplies it said I would need to fulfill the mission but my credit card was declined. Part of me was secretly relieved. I knew killing was wrong but the wires told me how to get around my financial woes. It directed me to an ATM in town and sent some sort of charged pulse directly into the machine. After a few seconds the overloaded circuitry started spitting out hundred dollar bills! I no longer had an excuse. I took the money and bought the equipment for the next phase of the plan. The wires assured me, my image wouldn’t be caught on the ATM cameras. It took care of that too.

Once I had the supplies and knew the plan, I reluctantly had to keep my end of the agreement. I was just an instrument of this non corporeal entity. I hoped it’s motives were pure and beneficial to mankind in ways I still couldn’t yet see. The electric deity made several other key things happen to facilitate the process. Any doubts I had about it’s incredible power or determination were quashed after witnessing the drawbridge lower by itself onto the passing oil tanker, and when the locks of the dam opened up and flooded the entire valley. I had nothing to do with any of that. The power in the power lines did all of it.

“You can’t be serious with all of this, buddy. We know it was you who robbed the ATM.”; The detective sneered. “How did you do that? How did you make it release all that cash and how did you cause that bridge to lower on the ship? Did you have help from a foreign government? Thousands of people could have died from that forced dam release. We will find out who your accomplices are and there will be terrorism charges for all of you!”

At that moment, the lights went out in the interrogation room. Detective Daniels stood up to find out what was going on but the suspect suggested he stop.

“I wouldn’t touch that door knob if I were you.”; The man offered calmly. “The entity told me I’d be captured for a brief time but the mission isn’t complete. This is part of the plan. If you try to open that electrified security door, you will be electrocuted. Mark my words.”
