Chapter 1.
Tumblr media
"You do not lock the goddamn doors in this fucking house."
The sentence was thick with a growl, one that if I was born correctly wouldn't have mattered in the slightest. Just hearing the sharp hit of his words, my insides clenched and coiled, dying to listen and make sure that he wouldn't be mad at me again.
"Sorry," I whispered softly, looking down at my bare toes that curled awkwardly under my gaze.
"You need to put on your scent blocker and try a little bit harder to fit in here. You're making all your brothers crazy with that fucking smell."
Swallowing thickly, I grabbed the bottle from him with a nod.
If my scent made my brothers crazy, they made me out of my fucking mind with sickness. Every one of them smells like acidic garbage with a hint of overpowering sweetness, y'know, like the way too fake soaps or body lotions you find in those hoity toity stores.
"You're a fucking Pangborn. Please act like it," my father grumbled, wrinkling his nose at the smell of my nervousness. "Jesus Christ. I can't believe your mother made you."
His words were a low blow but nothing I wasn't used to hearing now. Nothing any of the pack said got to me as bad as it used it.
Liar.
Okay, a lot of it hurt but I tried not to think of it all the time. It was my fault, really. I wasn't born right.
To be a Pangborn in Cypress City, you have to be an alpha. The Pangborns breed for one purpose and one purpose only, to give the city more alphas then they know what to do with.
Every Pangborn is expected to be a boy, to be an alpha and to take on the numerous betas that are practically beating down the door for them to be let in. So when I was born, disappointment was ripe in the air. It still is.
A small female omega with no qualities and no purpose.
I'm nothing.
Oh that's fun, what a great thought to have. Even if it hurts, it's true.
Since I was born I've been kept hidden like a secret. There's no fairytale here, there's no pack of alpha princes waiting at the bottom of my incredibly sterile, sad tower. There's no one that cares. Well, maybe Brady and MacKenzie but they pretend I don't exist half the time.
Looking down at the bottle of scent blocker, a sob threatened to well up in my throat.
"Weak omega bullshit." That's what my father would say.
It's so fucking annoying to be different. It's so painful. But the hope that one day I'd be accepted never ceased to creep into my thoughts.
So I sprayed the spray on even though it makes me feel sick.
I could smell him before my door opened. His alpha pheromones were bleeding throughout the long hallway that lead to my room.
He smelled of garbage, lemon juice and the slightest hint of boysenberry. Although the boysenberry is not his own smell. It's a betas.
"Oy!" MacKenzie booms, shoving open the door.
His bright red hair and forest green eyes searched the mostly barren room until he found me in the corner.
"He cornered you again?" he asked softly, stepping into the room like he's witnessing a hurt animal.
"It's okay!" I tried to beam a smile for him but it fell flat into some kind of grimace.
MacKenzie wasn't really my brother, he hailed from the Alban Pangborns so he's more like my very distant cousin but he's pack and that makes him my authority regardless. If he barked at me, I'd end up doing his bidding. Just like all my other brothers do. I'm grateful he doesn't do it but he still could nonetheless.
"You sprayed on the right amount," Kenz praised, giving me a small smile.
The praise made me want to preen, made me want to jump and shout for joy that I did something right but I kept it locked tight within me.
"You'll be pleased to know that your father and some of the others are going on a business trip soon. It'll just be some of us left in the house. You won't have to smell all this alpha shite around, you ken?"
His thick accent made me smile then. When he first came over from Alba I had not a fucking clue what he was talking about but now it almost feels like a secret language we speak.
"I ken," I nodded, setting the spray down on my dresser.
"Just wait a while to come down to get your dinner. The boys and I have been having a beta fucking feast," he wiggled his eyebrows and left the doorway without so much as a goodbye.
I wish I was a beta.
No, actually, I wished I was an alpha. I wished I was born an alpha so that I didn't have to be a disappointment and left out of everything.
Sitting down on my bed, I fluffed the uncomfortable comforter around me to no avail and since I know I'm alone I let out the most pitiful of whines. Whining wasn't allowed. My father told me that alphas hate whining more than anything.
Once I whined during dinner with the Landons and their alpha son looked like he wanted to tackle me from across the table. It was the one and only time I was able to go to dinner with my family. They never let me go again.
I apparently ruined their business merger dinner.
My family made a fuck ton of money. Too much money to count on your fingers, not that I'd ever see a cent. I wasn't worth a dollar to them. They own a vast majority of land across the globe, mostly farms or patches of free wilderness that people are begging to buy from them.
If only those vast patches of land would be able to buy me a soft comfortable comforter. This one is rough and itchy and I don't like it. I don't know much about being an omega but I do know that I don't like the blankets I own.
You see, omegas are rare. Like one in one hundred is an omega rare. Somewhere in history omegas just became a rarity and as such they're terribly hated.
Whenever I tried to ask the pack any questions they all shut me down with a growl and told me to go back to my room.
"Y/N!"
My father's bark was sharp and I tightened my terribly uncomfortable blanket over my shoulders at the noise.
If they are having a beta party downstairs I most certainly wouldn't be welcome to interrupt it. All the beta females that came into the house hated me. I tried to be friendly and smile, tried to make friends with other girls but they didn't want anything to do with me.
Probably feeding into the whole hate omega-kind thing, huh?
When my father shouted my name again, I had no choice but to get up. It was an alpha command now, filled with bite and fury.
If I saw one bare tit I was going to lose my goddamn mind. I'd been having these awful urges these past couple of months. It felt like something was boiling in my gut and itching beneath my skin, just begging to get out of me. What it was, I wasn't sure but it feels fucking awful and devastating just the same.
When I was starting to run a fever, my father would give me a few pills and lock me up in my room until the fever had passed and I was able to carry on with my chores.
My feet took me without thinking. The large home I lived in with the twelve others in the pack passed by in a blur. I tried not to look up from the wooden floorboards, I really didn't want to see anyone mating out in the open like I know my brothers loved to do.
I could hear the audible moans of the betas, probably in various states of undress all around me as I made my way to my father's office.
This had always been my home but I'd always felt like a stranger here. It's not just because my family wasn't welcoming, it just felt wrong. Nothing in this place is where it should be. The pictures on the cabin-like wooden walls weren't at all in the right order, the couches in the sitting room weren't staged properly, even the wood that goes into the fireplace smells horrendous.
Everything about this place made me feel sick.
That includes my father's office.
Once I stepped inside I was immediately smacked with pheromones, ones that made my stomach roll with nausea. I wonder if that's how everyone felt. I wonder if betas got nauseous with their families too.
My eyes scanned the room which was terribly out of order and then they caught on the one picture that sat on my father's desk.
It was her.
My mother. Whom of which I've never met. She was a beta that my father never bonded with but got pregnant anyway. He loved her…I think. But when she had me and I was an omega she was disappointed and left me here. She left me here alone. With these people.
Family.
She left me here with my family.
I hadn't realized I whined until my father cracked his hand down on his desk with a fierceness. "What did I say about that shit?!"
"I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking."
"Not that she ever does, eh?" my brother Riley laughed, elbowing me in the ribs as he passed.
Riley was an interesting case of smells. There's the cedar which makes sense because he spends a lot of time outdoors, there's the sharpness of spearmint like a powerful gum that makes your nostrils burn and…boysenberry?
He and MacKenzie have been sharing again. Definitely not uncommon for those two.
"Close the doors. She's gonna scare all the betas away. I'm not waiting another round for Hunter to have an alpha son of his own."
"Keep the lineage alive." That's the pack motto. What a terrible fucking bumper sticker that would be.
I stood there, looking down at my toes as my father and Riley talked and laughed with one another. Probably forgetting I was even in the room. Which happens sometimes.
"Alright, little O?" Kenz cheered, entering the office.
"Don't call her that," my father snapped, finally remembering I was around.
MacKenzie held his hands up in a gesture to soothe any frayed nerves and he sat down with a groan on the couch closest to father's desk.
"Y/N," my father began, not even offering the kindness to look at me. "Your brothers and I are going on a business trip outside of the city. Some of your brothers, like MacKenzie, are staying back because they have a dinner meeting at the house while I'm away."
My head lifts in surprise. Will I be allowed to go?! Can I eat dinner with my brothers?!
"There's many alphas in the pack, we can kill two birds with one stone. This business meeting is incredibly important for us."
My smile was megawatt and I nodded instantly. "Sure, of course! I can–"
"You can," my father interrupted with a sneer. "Make sure you stay in your room, take your pills and keep your scent blocker applied when the Euphoria Pack comes to the meeting. This contract will be our biggest one so far and I will not have your omega bullshit fuck it up for the rest of us. Do you understand?"
The disappointment and sorrow that swirled through me almost knocked me off my feet. "Oh, I see… I understand."
"See that you do. I won't stand for losing this deal because you couldn't handle yourself."
God, I wanted to curl up and die. I'm so pitiful. What a fucking waste. I wish I was never born an omega.
Trying to bury whines and suffering hurt sometimes and in this instance it felt like a red hot poker was shoved down my throat.
"She stinks like sadness," Riley chuckled, shaking out his long brown hair and looking me over with disdain dripping from every pore.
"Lighten up, brother. She's only human," Kenz laughed, stepping in front of me and waving his hand behind his back.
Get out.
That's what he was telling me.
"Dinner will be brought up to you. If you're feeling hot then take your pills. We're leaving in the morning and we won't be back for a few weeks."
Oh, thank God, I could do without seeing my father and half of my brothers for weeks on end. Maybe finally I would be able to walk around without getting yelled at.
Tumblr media
Three days of the freedom I thought I would be acquiring went by too fast. I'd been left with my brothers that were the easiest to deal with. Brady, Ronan, MacKenzie, Dash and Hunter were, of course, the easiest to deal with because they never nagged me and they were always too busy fucking betas to really give a shit what I was doing.
The house stunk of sex and carefree fun but more importantly it smelled of my freedom. I was able to go out in the garden to read, to sunbathe, to smell something that wasn't garbage. It was heavenly.
I'd seen flowers I've never seen before, ones that weren't there the last time I was in the gardens. Apparently Leticia, one of the pack chasers, suggested sprucing things up. When I suggested it to my father I got sent up to my room with no dinner and pills because I was acting 'out of order.' I'm a person not a goddamn machine. How could I possibly be out of order?
But now with the three days of freedom gone, I'm once again left up in my room without a single thing to do. Defiance curled in my bones and I narrowed my eyes at the white little pills on my bedside table.
My father wasn't here, he wouldn't know if I took them or not. I'd rather get a fever then take them and feel even sicker than before. Those pills made me nauseous and I felt like reality was so far out of touch that I'd never get back to it. I did end up spraying the scent blocker, though. Just one little spritz, just enough to save the visiting alphas downstairs from my monstrous odor.
They shouldn't be subjected to a disgusting omega. An embarrassment to the family.
Tumblr media
The sprawling cabin estate was large before our eyes but it pales in comparison to the mansion we just created on the outskirts of the state.
"I don't like the smell," Jin murmured to us.
The smell was honestly horrific. These alphas seemed to stew in the scents of sex and their own pheromones. You could smell the female betas like they were throwing out a wide casting net to repulse everyone around them.
"Why the fuck did we agree to this?" Taehyung grumbled, folding his arms.
"Because although they're disgusting, they're rich as fuck and they have the land we need to start up the center," Namjoon replied evenly, fixing his tie.
I couldn't seem to take my eyes off the enlarged wooden cabin in front of us. That's exactly what it was: a large, gigantic wooden house. It would be almost comical if it wasn't very real.
"I don't even wanna touch the door," Hoseok hissed, taking to kicking the front door insead.
Even in this day and age everyone lives with the one soul purpose of finding their person, their omega but this pack didn't seem to care about finding one. Not with the way their lodgings smelled.
Now, of course, finding an omega that's right for your pack is like finding a unicorn or finding gold at the end of a rainbow but packs do it. Not all the time but enough to keep packs hopeful, at least.
Once the door swung open, a red headed alpha before us smiled widely. "Gents, welcome! The Pangborn Pack is happy to have you!"
Namjoon gave him his typical killer smile and the alpha seemed to relax at it. Our pack leader was all killer charm and easy going… until you fuck with his pack.
The seven of us have only had each other for quite a few years now and our family depends on one another more than most.
"Thank you for having us," Jimin smiled, stepping into the home first.
His eyes bounced around the interior before nodding. Once I stepped into the entryway behind him, the need to look at the inside faded. In the air, apart from the alpha scents were the scents of dinner and something so deliciously sweet that it made my mouth water.
Fuck! What is that smell?!
"Made us dessert?" Namjoon inquired with a laugh.
So he can smell that too.
The scent was warm and sugary like a fresh out of the oven sugar cookie with vanilla ice cream slowly melting on top.
Why the fuck was I about to nut over dessert?
Casting my eyes to Taehyung, I could see him tugging at the collar of his expensive dress shirt.
It was getting increasingly hot in here, that I could guarantee.
The scent was so thick and practically viscous I could feel it wrapping around my cock and tugging sensuously. My knot was two seconds from expanding and the desire to rut until I was sated was pressing indecently on my brain.
"No dessert here, lads. The betas can barely cook a steak without it burning! We ordered out for dinner tonight! Dinnae ken billionaires like you would be opposed to that, eh?"
"Dinnae ken means didn't think," another alpha offered, slipping in beside the redhead. His hair was long and brown, shaggy even with a boyish smile that could probably charm anyone he laid his eyes on.
"That sounds great," Jin replied, unbuttoning his suit jacket and cracking his neck.
Whatever that fucking scent is, it has us all by the balls.
Namjoon gripped his hand into a fist, eyes glazing over all of us. "To the dining room, then?"
"Getting right down to business! I love that! We have betas to look after anyway," Red chortled, wiggling his eyebrows at us.
When the group of us moved with the two other alphas, my heart started to hammer as the smell became stronger.
I tried to temper my growl that wormed its way up my throat but Joon caught it. "I don't know what it is but fuck, I want it so bad," he agreed.
"Alright there, lads?"
"Just have to use the restroom. Would you mind sending me in the right direction?" I inquired, needing to find the words through a thick haze of want.
"Bathroom on the first floor is occupied for the betas. Second floor up that staircase there," Red pointed to the staircase from where the scent is strongest. "Fifth door on the right."
With a nod, I set off trying not to falter and stumble from the exquisite smell.
"We'll be waiting in the dining room. The pack is excited to make this merger," the brown haired man smiled.
Once they were out of sight I took the stairs two at a time, eyes searching for any indication of where the scent came from.
I let my senses guide me. Following the smell took me past the bathroom and past any rooms that smelt of the alphas. Stopping at the end of the hallway, the door before me was completely different from the others. It was metal, almost sterile in a sense. But the scent was there, it was so heady and present that my cock stood to attention.
"Oh fuck," I grunted, shoving open the door and barreling up the stairs.
The hallway I rushed down was bare of anything home-y and it looks like some sort of clinical hospital ward.
The door at the other end suddenly opened in a flourish and the sweetest little thing I'd ever seen stepped out with curious, glazed eyes.
"Omega," I groaned long and low, stepping toward her.
She was the maddening scent. She was what my pack was going crazy over.
"Oh! I'm so… I've never–" the sweet thing whispered, looking me over with hunger.
The perfect woman. Right before my fucking eyes. Those lips, those sweet eyes, that adorable, if not a little scared smile, that fucking body. Built just for me and my other pack brothers.
Mine, mine, mine! Every cell in my body screamed it with frantic need.
"Why do you smell so good?" she whimpered, lifting a hand as if she wanted to touch me.
Please fucking touch me. Holy shit, I was going out of my fucking mind from this perfect little thing.
"What do I smell like, sweetness?" I inquired, stepping closer.
"Like warm hot chocolate and marshmallows. Not like garbage at all!" she gasped, looking up with wide, innocent eyes.
A laugh tumbled past my lips. What an innocent creature.
"Does everyone smell like garbage to you, sweetness?"
"I just want to…" she groaned, a whimper slipping past her lips.
A purr started in my chest, rattling my bones with how thick and heavy it was. Oh fuck, I'd never purred for anyone before.
"What do you want?" I asked softly, holding my hands up to show her I mean no harm.
She gripped my wrist with a dainty hand probably thinking it had a fierceness she didn't embody. She lifted my hand to her soft cheek and my purr started up once more.
"I'm so sorry," she apologized, not taking her eyes off mine. "I know omegas are disgusting. I shouldn't bother you."
The sweet purr she pulled from me turned to a growl in an instant. "You could never be disgusting. Omegas are precious. Didn't your alphas teach you that?"
She stared up at me, eyes starting to brim with tears.
Oh my God, she was everything I could have ever wanted. My pants were so fucking tight, my heart feels like it was gonna combust and I'm pretty damn sure I just met my fucking mate.
"They're not really my alphas," she whispered softly, keeping my wrist close to her nose.
I wanted to take this gorgeous woman and lock her away where no one but the pack can find her. Holy shit, my brain was turning to fucking mush.
"What are they then if not your alphas?" I asked, stepping closer.
When my chest brushed against hers, she perfumed the air for me and another purr ripped from my chest like it was an instrument being played purely for her.
"Brothers, father," she mumbled, lost in a haze of our own making.
"So you don't have a pack of your own, sweetness?" I whispered, coursing my thumb over her cheek.
"No one would want me. I'm useless," the omega replied so softly I might not have heard her if not for her keeping my attention ensnared.
"I highly doubt that, pretty girl. What's your name?"
"Y/N…"
Beautiful.
"I'm Jeongguk. It's nice to meet you, sweetness."
"I can't take it. I can't take it. I can't take it!" Jimin chanted, rushing into the hallway.
The omegas gasp was loud and frightened for only a moment until she laid eyes on the other alpha. I purred for her, watching her instantly relax at the noise.
"This is Jimin. He's a part of my pack. The Euphoria Pack."
"Oh no, I've…I've ruined dinner. My father will be so upset with me," she groaned, sounding not as upset as she probably would be if I wasn't purring up a fucking storm.
"Scent sympathetic. I thought it was like a fucking myth for people like us," Jimin laughed, stepping up beside me.
He didn't seem jealous or upset at all that my hands were on her. We've never tried for an omega, not really. Unfortunately, most omegas wanted us for our money and not for the connection. Not to mention most of the omegas we met smelled so cloyingly sweet that it gave us headaches for weeks. Most omegas wanted just some of us but not all of us and that doesn't bode well for a pack.
"You smell like calming tea and blueberries," Y/N breathed, blinking up at him.
"And you smell like a yummy dessert, sweetheart. How's such a pretty omega like you hidden up here away from everything?"
"Why are you being so nice to me? I'm just an omega," she whimpered, looking between us.
"'Just an omega'? Don't you know your worth, pretty girl?" I scoffed, tilting my head.
She opened her mouth to reply, only to shut it and furrow her eyebrows.
"I want to introduce her to the pack. I think this is it. I think we found our girl," Jimin beamed at me, allowing her to pull him closer.
She seemed to be a needy little thing. One we certainly wouldn't mind doting on. She also seemed completely out of touch with reality and it wasn't just because she was obsessed with our scents.
"Do you have a nest, sweetness? Would you care to show us?"
A nest is very sacred to omegas, it's one of the only places they can find comfort during heats and in times of stress. It was incredibly forward for me to ask but I wanted to know what she liked. I knew my hopes might be high but I wanted to set up the nest in the new mansion how she would like it. Because she was mine. She was ours. She belonged with us.
"I– What's a nest?" Y/N asked, eyebrows pinching innocently.
"Do not fucking tell me you're kept in the dark up here," Jimin growled deeply, his scent turning acidic.
Instead of turning tail and running, she started to… climb him?
She climbed him like a fucking tree. And the good looking bastard was all for it.
One arm snaked around her waist to keep her up and the other ran up and down her back in soothing motions.
She nuzzled his cheek and neck, whimpering and begging for his scent to be all over her.
"Good girl," Jimin cooed, purring for her. "Take what you want, sweetheart. We'll gladly give it."
There were rules to getting an omega, courting before mating and making sure your omega was happy and well looked after. In some cities omegas even went to Help Centers to find their perfect pack but Cypress City had no such thing. That was what we were trying to change. That was why we needed this deal with this pack.
"I don't know what's happening! I'm so sorry! I just feel so…"
"Overwhelmed?" Jimin offered, pulling back to look at her.
She nodded, whimpering and tucking her face into the crook of his neck.
"We need to talk to the pack," I told him, pressing my chest to her back and purring. I drifted the back of my hand over her bare arm and she seemed to thrive on not only praise but physical affection.
"I can't leave her," Jimin hissed over her shoulder, hugging her tighter at the thought of having to part.
"I don't want you to go! Please! I'm so tired of being alone! Please don't go!" she sobbed into his neck.
A growl ripped from my chest at her sadness and I was storming off before I even knew what was happening.
She's mine. She's mine. She's mine.
"Guk!" Jimin called but I was already barreling down the stairs with a fierceness building in my chest.
They kept that precious omega in a sterile fucking ward like she was some sort of disease. She didn't even know what a nest was! It was a disgrace! She'd been abused without even understanding anything!
She's mine!
If one more sob of hers entered my ears, I thought I might burn their oversized camp cabin down and dance on the embers.
Shoving open the dining room doors, I glowered at the pack that sat high and mighty at the end of the long dining room table. Once they saw me and smelled me, they all stood.
"Been wandering around our home, have you?" Red asked with the tilt of his head.
"Stupid girl can't do anything but get herself in trouble!" one of them sneered.
The insult made a growl rip from my throat and they all stared long and hard at me. I wouldn't stand for this. I couldn't stand for this.
"She doesn't even know what a fucking nest is. How dare you all treat an omega like this! This is abuse!" I boomed, widening my eyes at them.
My packs jaws fell open in shock and suddenly they were standing to surround me, to have my back.
"She's scent sympathetic with us," Jimin assured, entering the room with her still cradled to him.
I was happy she liked him. He's far more easy going and carefree then most of us and she'd enjoy his company.
My pack stepped toward her and she cried sweetly at all of their scents. They purred for her and my heart expanded. No one was left out and she locked eyes with all of them. She jumped ship from Jimin to Namjoon and he nuzzled her hair. He wrapped her legs around him like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Would you like to leave this place, pet?" he inquired.
“She'll do no such thing!" Red boomed.
When she whimpered at the alpha bite, we growled in defiance.
"You think your bark is bad? Mine was given to me by the devil. If I have to force you to obey, I fucking will. It's the omegas choice. You can't keep her here like a fucking prisoner!" Joon boomed.
"She's not a part of the deal," one of the Pangborn's hissed through his teeth.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry," she gasped repeatedly, trying to set herself down.
"Do you want to get down, pet?" Namjoon asked, tilting her jaw to look up at him.
She reluctantly shook her head, burying her face back into his neck.
Oh fuck, she's so perfect and sweet.
"Then you stay exactly where you are," the pack leader whispered, giving her his wrist to be able to tilt his head and glower at the Pangborn pack.
"You expect me to pay? For a person?! Are you out of your small alpha minds?" Namjoon bit out, sneering at her brothers.
"MacKenzie… Dad is gonna flip," one of them breathed.
"I'm tired of always having to sneak Juliet around. Just be rid of her. Omegas are nothing but trouble."
Hoseok growled so loudly, something he never does, that it almost made my chest rattle.
"I know you don't know us very well," Seokjin breathed slowly as the other pack continued to argue. "But if you feel safe with us we'd like to take you somewhere you can be yourself and be happy. How does that sound, princess? You deserve much better than this shithole."
"I won't feel sick?" she inquired, looking up at him with hopeful eyes.
Oh, she's killing me here.
"Do you feel sick in this house?" Yoongi growled, narrowing his eyes at the other pack.
Her nod was slow and sad.
"I'm getting her out of here. Now!" Namjoon boomed, pressing her face into the scent gland of his neck.
She seemed to love being held. We could do that for her. We could give her anything and everything she wants. We could be good for her.
"Give us a million!" Red or MacKenzie called back but Namjoon was already heading for the door.
"Get fucked!" our pack leader growled.
"Wh-Where are we going?" Y/N asked, taking a deep breath of fresh air.
"Home, sweetness," I promised. "We're going home."

Summary:Mackenzie walks back into Will’s newsroom and life but bringing with her not just memories of their past. She brings a two-year-old on her hip without a father.
She wished he would take them into his office, or that she knew where her office was.
“I tried to get in touch with you when you were on vacation. No one could seem to get in touch with you. Or at least they weren’t willing to say.” She was rambling, she hated when she did that. It announced how nervous she was. He was silent. “Actually, I’ve tried to get in touch with you a lot of times over the last three years. Did you get those e-mails?”
“Yeah.” Shit.
“And what did you think?”
“I didn’t read them.” Well, that was one question Mac had answered. Things were going to be more complicated than she anticipated. He didn’t know. Still more silence. “Okay this could work.” She said, trying to convince herself more than him. “In fact, it’s going to work great! I asked my agent to arrange a three-year contact. You know me I think that’s the…”
“It’s not a three-year contract anymore.”
“I’m sorry.” She asked in confusion.
“it’s not a three-year contract anymore. In fact, it’s a 156-week contract that gives me the opportunity to fire you 155 times at the end of each week. We’ll wait a few months to make sure it’s not a story that Will Carter can shove up my ass. We’ll do it then.” As he spoke, voice dripping with distain and arrogance, she felt the rage begin to form in her stomach. God he could be so spiteful! He had no idea what effect he was having on her life.
“How did you get my contract changed?” she asked coldly.
“I gave the network some money back off my salary.”
“How much?” “A million dollars a year.”
“You gave back a million dollars to be able to fire me whenever you want!”
“Three million dollars and not whenever I want. At the end of each week.” He stared at her with such contempt and bitterness she practically tasted the bile that rose in his throat from seeing her. But this wasn’t about her anymore. She needed this job; she needed a steady income. She sighed trying to still her nerves. “I get you doing this to me. But you can’t do this to them.”
“Who?”
“People followed me here you ass!”  Well, there goes calm. “They’re in the process of moving! They’ve put down deposits, found flat mates…”
“Yeah, they fucked up Mac! They trusted you!” He screamed in retort.
“Mac?” Their shouting match was interrupted when Jim returned to the Newsroom. Mac’s eyes went wide with fear before she even turned around. She saw the quizzical look on Will’s brow. Shit. She knew what she was turning around to. “I’m sorry but he wouldn’t stop crying for you.”

"Chin, I'm really fine." You try to convince your platonic older brother when he finally stops in front of your apartment complex.
In disbelief, he scoffs. "Y/N, you went into an extraction mission alone, completely outnumbered, and as a result, you were nearly killed."
"Okay, technically I didn't go alone. I had Kono on standby, ready to call backup if anything went sideways." You argued.
He deadpans at you. "Yeah, exactly, stand by. While you went in to save Steve by yourself."
"What were you thinking?!"
You sigh, looking away. "Getting McGarrett back... They were going to torture him further if I haven't broken him out, and it was my fault anyways!"
"You could've called me or Danny- or better yet, all of us to help you! You shouldn't have gone by yourself Y/N, you could've died!"
"They could've killed McGarrett if I haven't got there! And they weren't going to kill me, I had it under control... kind of." You mumbled the last part.
Chin exhales deeply. "You're lucky Kono called us in time and not having been far from your location."
You hesitated, realizing he was correct. You were a bit foolish to go on your now not-so-secret rescue mission into enemy territory without the proper support and guns. But they had to realize that you were growing impatient and that every second and minute that passed without getting any closer to saving Steve meant losing him to you bit by bit, something you couldn't have. You knew they wanted him back as much as you did, but with your worst fears overwhelming you, you made the impulsive choice to get McGarrett, leaving yourself exposed.
"Look, I know you want to protect all of us and do everything you can to help us when we're in trouble, but you need to understand that you can't do it all on your own. Sometimes you simply have to accept that some things aren't meant to be done alone; you need people, a team, and a family, and that's what we're here for. Second, you can't blame yourself for something beyond your control. You can't shield everyone from danger as much as you want because it can and will happen, either way. It will be difficult, but you have to accept it." He explains tenderly, looking at you with gentle eyes.
You trail your eyes up at him. "I know... I'm sorry, Chin..."
"Thank you for being there for me when I needed it."
He softly smiles. "Of course, you know I love you, right?"
"I know, I love you too." You nod returning the smile.
"Ohana mau loa." [Hawaiian Translation: Family forever]
"Ohana mau loa." You whispered as Chin pulled your foreheads together.
You stay together for a few more seconds until Chin separates. "Well, I hope you're ready for when you enter your apartment."
"Why would I need to be prepared?" Your brow furrows.
"Oh, you don't know? You'll see what I mean." He says this with a sly smile as he gets out of the car and walks up to your side.
He swings open your door and puts his arm under your armpits, hoisting you out of the car. "I can walk up to my door, thank you very much."
"Oh really?" He raises his brows. "Okay, fine, try taking another step without me."
He lets you go, and you try to regain your balance while hobbling with your sprained left ankle and clutching your aching side. You take another stride, certain that you can walk on your own, only to stumble and nearly fall, but quickly recover stability by gripping Chin's car.
From behind you, you could feel his smug grin. And when you slowly turn to face him, you scowl at the mocking expression on his face.
"Say it." His obnoxious smirk never faltered.
You continue to glare at him. "I need your help to get to the door..."
His smile widens. "What's the magic word?"
"What are you, five?" You squint at him.
"Actually, thirty-four. Twelve years older than you, so show some respect and say it." He replies.
You snort. "Old man. But a brain of a child."
"Oh, so you want me to leave you here. Fine by me." He takes a step back to the driver's seat.
"No-! Wait!" You briefly grumble under your breath. "Can you please take me up to my door?"
"Now was that so hard?" He then approaches you, throwing your arm across his shoulders.
"Shut up."
Despite Chin's persistence to assist you to your apartment door, you did your best to lessen the weight and carry your own instead.
"You realize that the whole point of me helping you is to relieve you of the burden of doing all of the work yourself. Yet, you keep at it. He calls you out.
You drew your lips into a line. "I know... It's a habit, you know I'm not used to this."
"Yeah, but why don't you try to break that habit, like I said, you have people who care about you for a reason." He reminds you.
You nod. "I'll try."
Fortunately, your apartment building had elevators, so getting you to the third floor wasn't too problematic. Chin leads you two down the balcony, passing several of your neighbors' doors, to your front door.
You and Chin both notice the lights still on from the windows as you reach your apartment entrance. "Why are they still up? It's half past eleven."
Chin chuckles. "You're really asking that?"
You scrunch your brows. "Yes? Is that wrong?"
"Oh, dear Y/N, you have so much to learn, you're so oblivious." He laughs.
You grimace at his taunts. "What are you talking about? No, I'm not. And what are you doing?"
You interrupt Chin as he has his fist raised against the door. "What does it look like I'm doing? I'm going to knock on the door."
"I have the key."
"You're not going to walk in by yourself, also it's better this way." He says.
"What do you mean 'better this way'? You don't have to bother them, Chin."
"Trust me, Y/N. They'd want to come to the front door for this." His mischievous smile returns.
You narrow your eyes. "I don't like this."
He ignores you and proceeds to noisily bang on your front door, making you cringe. "Did you have to knock that loud? They're hybrids, they have heightened hearing."
"You never know." He sings songs cheekily, causing you to roll your eyes.
And within just two minutes the door opens, revealing a particularly happy bear-hybrid.
Tumblr media
"Hey, what time is it? It's pretty late, isn't Y/N supposed to be home now?" Jimin peeks into the living room where Namjoon, Jungkook, and Taehyung sat on the long couch.
Jimin pouted as all three of the hybrids shrugged in response to their mate's question. He then enters the kitchen, where the three oldest were, Jin and Hoseok busy cleaning dishes, and Yoongi is seated at the island dining table, where all eight plates full of food were becoming colder by the minute, concentrating on his cell phone doing knows what.
"Does anyone realize how late it is now? Y/N isn't home yet." If you were there, you could have heard the pout in Jimin's words.
Upon hearing the maned wolf hybrid's voice, the three oldest turn their heads. "It is kind of late, it's already eleven-thirty."
"And the food is cold." Yoongi says, almost monotonously.
Jimin whines. "I miss her already. She should be home now, what if something happened to her? She did mention she had an important case today."
Hoseok's ears flatten; the wolverine hybrid was terrified of being hurt, or worse, having anyone close to him hurt. Being trapped in the fighting ring for so many years had its toll on him; he was never really a fighter in the first place, but rather a lover, as the saying goes.
"D-don't say that. I-I'm sure Y/N's okay. She was most likely caught up with paperwork at their office." He reassures Jimin, but if he were being truly honest, he mostly just meant to comfort himself more as the idea of it scares him.
"I'm sorry Hobi-hyung, you're probably right, I'm just overreacting." Jimin's face softens.
"Would you guys feel better if we called her?" Jin proposed, and Hoseok and Jimin nodded in agreement.
Jin shifts his gaze to Yoongi, who is still clutching his phone, almost as if he's talking to him telepathically to make the call. But before Yoongi could place his finger on your contact, a loud knock echoed throughout the apartment, alerting all seven hybrids.
Their ears twitch at the sudden sound, and all three of them hurry out of the kitchen to the living room, where Namjoon, Jungkook, and Taehyung were still sitting, albeit with puzzled expressions.
"Is that Y/N at the door? Doesn't she usually have the keys?" Jungkook questions.
"Yeah, she does. Taehyung, could you open the door?" Namjoon responds, and Taehyung rises from the couch and walks up to the front door.
His nose twitches slightly as he picks up your faint scent, confirming that you're behind the door. He then grips the knob, with his boxy smile across his face, swinging the door open.
But the moment he sets his gaze on you, his smile fades almost instantly. It takes him a brief second, but he notices your bruised face and slouched posture against your male colleague. And, although he could detect your scent, he could also sense the overpowering scent of the man who was so so close to you. He tries to suppress the urge to growl in his throat, making a silent decision to scent you later on.
"Hey, Tae." You croaked, flashing a lopsided smile.
"Y/N..." He stutters at your appearance.
"May we come in?" Chin stares between you two.
Taehyung snaps out of his daze and walks aside. "Y-yes, of course."
Chin assists you in entering your apartment, as Taehyung watches you limping against the older man. A joyful voice greets you as soon as you come into view of the last six hybrids in the living room. "Y/N! I was beginning to worry that you—"
The cheerfulness vanished as soon as they laid eyes on you, causing him to frown along with the others; this doesn't go missed by you. "Hey, guys..."
"Y/N, what happened?" Jimin approaches you with worried eyes.
You beam him the smile that they all adore, unknowingly leaving a blooming feeling in all of their hearts. "Nothing wrong, Chimmy, I'm okay."
Chin rolls his eyes at your remark. "And by 'I'm okay,' she means a sprained ankle, fractured ribs, and a minor stab wound in the gut."
You whack Chin's shoulder as their eyes widen at the last words. "They didn't need to know that!"
You return your gaze to your seven roommates. "Ignore him, he's being dramatic."
"Sure I am." He suddenly releases you, causing you to stagger in your stance.
"Well, go on." He smiles, finally realizing what he's doing, which makes you scowl mentally.
You give them a nervous grin as they stare you down, waiting for you to move so they can see how serious your injuries are. You gulped and stood up straight without cupping your painful ribs, you took a tentative step, and as you put your weight down, your legs buckled and almost fell to the floor.
"Y/N!" Namjoon and Jungkook quickly sprang off the couch as they all exclaimed. Jin and Yoongi rushed forward as Jimin and Taehyung followed suit being the closest, extending their hands forward to catch you.
"You're not okay!" Jimin grips your right arm, while Taehyung does the same with the other.
"That's what I've been trying to say. And so did the doctor, you know, the medical professional whose life's work is to treat and diagnose all that is wrong with the human body." Chin snides obviously intended at you.
"Alright, I get it. But believe me when I say I'll be okay; all I need is a good night's sleep and I'll be back at work tomorrow."
"You're insane if you think you'll be able to go back to work like this." Jin scowls.
"But Jinnie..." You nearly whine.
"No, he's right Y/N. You're not going back to work tomorrow; instead, you're staying at home. Taking a week off, as instructed by the doctor." Chin cuts you off.
Your eyes widened. "A week?! But what about work?!"
He chuckles. "As for work, you'll be doing file reorganization. I'll drop over the materials tomorrow morning."
"You're going to make me do paperwork. Are you serious?" You stare at him in disbelief.
"Yes, I am. Steve's words, not mine. Which you will hear an earful from him, I should warn you." He responded.
You groan. "I know, I'm dreading it."
He puts up his hands in surrender. "You asked for it when you infiltrated enemy territory alone and severely outnumbered."
"WHAT?!" You winced at their reaction as they all shrieked out once again. "Chin, seriously, leave."
"Okay, okay I'm leaving. But you're staying at home, L/N, that's an order." Once Chin used your last name, the deal was sealed; there was no more room for debate.
You huff in defeat. "Yes, Lieutenant Kelly."
"Good." He next turns his attention to your seven housemates. "Make certain she doesn't do anything dumb and leaves the house."
Everyone curtly nods. "Don't worry, she's not going anywhere anytime soon."
"I'll take my leave then, see you tomorrow Y/N." As he leaves your apartment, you gave him a wave in return.
When the door closes, silence fills the air as you wait for the seven hybrids to speak. But, to your surprise, Jimin scoops you up and carries you bridal-style, making you squeal. "Jimin!"
"Taehyung prepare a bath for her. Make sure it's warm." Jimin orders the bear hybrid, who nods and walks ahead of the pair of you.
"Jimin, you don't need to carry me, put me down."
"No."
You pout. "Jiminnnn—"
"You heard Chin, Y/N- how could you say you're okay when you're seriously injured! You even have a stab wound!" He scolds you.
"Well- he said it's minor!"
"Doesn't make it any better." He scrutinizes you.
"Once you're finished with your bath, you have a lot of explaining to do, Missy." You heard Jin behind you two as Jimin enters your room.
Tumblr media
You carefully exited your warm bath and drained the soap-filled water when you finished your bath. You notice the folded clean clothing on your sink counter and smile at how thoughtful the boys are about your well-being. You leave the bathroom and enter your room, where you are welcomed by Taehyung, who appeared to be waiting for you just outside your bathroom door.
"Taehy-" You squeak once again as Taehyung sweeps you up and carries you bridal-style, just as Jimin had done previously.
"You almost missed dinner." Taehyung says as he carries you out of your room and into the living room.
"If I'm supposed to have dinner, why are we heading to the living room?" You asked.
"So we can watch you and cuddle you." He responds, making you snort and smile.
"Oh, something amusing to you?" He arches his brow.
With a smirk still on your lips, you shook your head. "It's just the way you said, it was a little funny."
"I'm funny to you?"
"No, you're cute when you try to be mad at me." You stifle another chuckle.
He scoffs. "Glad you find it amusing." Well, you were right. Even if he tried, he could never be upset at you. After all, you were his mate, and even if you didn't even know it, his animal part and human counterpart won't allow any negative feelings about you to fester for long.
He eventually places you on the couch, between Jin and Yoongi, while the others gather on the floor, around the coffee and the seven plates of food.
"Now that you're here, you need to tell us what happened. But first, you need to eat; you almost missed dinner since you came home late." Jin demands, holding a plate and a fork.
You nod, and as you reach for a dish on the coffee table, your hand is swatted away, and you turn to look at the person who slapped your hand, Jin. "What?"
"I'm feeding you."
"Jinnie, I think I can feed myself. I'm injured but my arms and hands are still functional." You laugh.
"Your ribs are fractured, and you were stabbed. You should limit movement that can affect those areas." Jin said. "I know you hate feeling dependant, but please allow us to help you, Y/N."
Your eyes were drawn to his puppy-like eyes as he awaited your approval. You pause for a bit before sighing softly and nodding. "Okay, just for you guys."
He grins with his lips, displaying his adorable bread cheeks, which makes everyone else smile. He then picks up several pieces of your food and begins feeding them to you. "Now, explain Missy."
So you proceeded to tell how you received an anonymous message detailing Steve's location with the order to come alone. And, even though you knew it was most likely a trap, you weren't about to disregard what may be a lead to rescuing your boss. But you also weren't stupid, so you let Kono come along but remain hidden and strictly listened to your word. When you finally breached the location, you anticipated being surrounded, but you weren't prepared for the number of men that would face you.
Seriously, a dozen men for a lone girl? Do they really think you're that much of a threat? It was a precarious situation, but you had to admit that it stroked your ego a little to be regarded as so dangerous that you needed so many people against you. And from there, it was obvious how the story unfolded, which led to you being hurt to the point of unconsciousness and returning home late with the help of Chin.
When you finished telling the incident, the room became quiet for what seemed like hours as the seven of them processed the information until a raspy voice pierced the void. "Ya, are you crazy?"
You jerked your head, finding Yoongi staring at you, and you responded with a guilty smile. "Maybe?"
"Who are they anyway?" Asked Namjoon.
You sigh. "I don't know, that's what we've been trying to figure out the entire time but we got nothing. The only reasonable conclusion we have been able to come to so far is that they are the same people we dealt with in the Nakama and Sulgi case, which led us to Korea."
"But it wouldn't make sense for them to come all this way for that." You stated.
"What if they're the same ones that are looking for us?" Jungkook questions.
You shook your head. "No, I highly doubt that. If it were true, they would have come long ago. I don't think those people even know you've left the country."
You then notice the mix of doubtful and concerned expressions on their faces. "Hey- Hey, guys, it's okay. You guys are safe. They're not after you. It's me they want, I was the one who killed a lot of their men, anyway."
"They just want revenge."
"And that's exactly what we're worried about." Jin glanced at you with the same worried doe-eyes as Jimin had when you came in earlier.
"Oh, Jinnie, you don't have to be worried about me—" You attempt to reassure him.
"But that's the thing, we care about you, so much Y/N. We will be worried for you, I mean, just look at you!" Taehyung exasperates. "You can hardly walk, and it's obvious that you were nearly beaten to death!"
"But I wasn't! I'm not dead, I'm still here!" You yelled back, but the minute you realized you raised your voice at them, you felt regretful. You knew they only wanted you to be safe; being a cop and dealing with serious crimes on a regular basis isn't exactly the safest job. There will be occasions when you are confronted with the most gruesome scenes, pushed into life-threatening situations, or forced to make difficult decisions that will affect not only you but everyone else involved.
Despite Jin's protests, you rose from the couch and approached Taehyung. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell."
"I know you were all terrified when you saw me walk through the door. But I promise you that I'm not leaving anytime soon." You tenderly cup his face, staring at him with the most sparkling, purest eyes he's ever seen, making it impossible for him to break away.
You both locked gazes until he drew you into him, and wrapped his arms around you. "You better not. I don't- I mean, we don't know what we would do without you."
You chuckle in his chest. "Don't say that, you guys will still have each other."
"But it will never be the same without you." Hoseok says, making you to release Taehyung from the hug which causes him to whine.
"Y/N, c-can we see?" Jimin sweetly asks, catching your attention, and you nod in reply.
"Come back to the couch, first. I don't want you standing for too long." Jin orders, and you giggle at his attitude. "Yes, Jinnie."
You return to the couch, but before you can sit down, you're dragged by your elbow into the lap of a certain snow leopard hybrid. You yelp, as you land on Yoongi's lap, eliciting a low growl from Jin. "Ya! Be careful with her, she's hurt, for god sake."
"You smell." Yoongi says flatly, making blood rush to your cheeks in embarrassment.
"But I just had a bath." You muttered as Yoongi's cheek rubbed against your head.
"He's not talking about that. It just- you were... How should I put this...?" Taehyung struggles to explain.
"You reek of that man from earlier." Yoongi states, monotonously once again.
"O-oh... Does it make you feel better if you scented me?" You queried bewildered.
"Yes, but seems like Yoongi is already doing it." Jin answers while glaring at the snow leopard, who ignores him. "Is it alright with you?"
"Of course, whatever makes you guys feel better." You confirm, then you suddenly hear purring from behind you.
"Okay, that's enough—sorry, Yoongi goes a little too far at times." Jin apologized, and you shook your head. "No need to apologize; it's perfectly fine with me. You don't have to stop if you don't want to Yoongs."
"I actually like it, and the purring is relaxing." And with that, you've inadvertently caused another major spark in their hearts. Unbeknownst to you, they've mentally decided to scent you as much as possible now that they've been given the green light.
"So, can we..." Jungkook spoke out, drawing your focus away from Yoongi's actions. "O-oh, yeah. Just don't freak out, okay?"
"Well, we can try, but we can't guarantee anything." Jimin replies.
You mumbled an 'okay,' then began lifting the hems of your shirt, revealing your horribly bruised abdomen with a small size gauze pasted your epigastric area. You can see their breath hitch as it comes into full view for them, and you can feel Yoongi's grip on you tighten slightly.
"Jesus, Y/N... This is- this is bad." Namjoon whispers. "Is that where your stab wound is?"
You nod, and their frowns deepen even further. "That's too close to your artery."
"Well, their aiming sucks." You made a joke, but their lack of smiles caused you to pout. "Too soon?"
Jin leans forward. "Can I see it?" Without saying anything, you start to peel away the medical tape, slowly exposing the blood-red slender wound, the one that was far too close to your heart. Upon seeing it, you hear several low growls.
Then Jungkook advances toward you and takes your hands. "We'll find out who did this, Y/N, and they'll be sorry." They hurt you, and they hurt you real bad. If it had been an inch higher, it could have pierced your heart, and then what?  You would have died.
And that thought infuriates them, enrages them even, but they try hard to conceal such emotions in front of you. Nobody ever hurts their mate and gets away with it. It hasn't been a long time, but you've become such an important person in their lives that they aren't going to let you go for a while.
"Thank you, Kook, unfortunately, we won't be catching them anytime soon, but I'll give you first dibs when we do." You give him a cheeky smile.
"From this night on, you will be resting. We'll take care of you for the next seven days." Namjoon asserts. "No ifs and buts, okay?"
You huff and cross your arms like a child, which they find endearing. "Okay."

Venom Rewrite - Epilogue
Lol, posting with my eyes shut bc i’m very aware tonight is new TBirds Day and I won’t get to watch the new ep today, but also!!! I present to you an epilogue :D I just needed to give Scott a tiny bit more closure than he got..... is it fixed, nope, is it marginally better, yeah.
Anyway, thanks for being here for this crazy week! I’ve enjoyed the journey and @ everyone who left a comment or like I see you all and love you dearly for your support :DDD
Read Previous Parts: [1] | [2] | [3] | [4]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Virgil spent a total of sixteen hours in the hospital where Kayo and Gordon had landed. He’d been poked and prodded by any number of specialists in that time, taking great care to ensure the antivenom had done its job and that he wasn’t about to deteriorate the second he walked out of their doors. He’d been lectured extensively about the signs of serum sickness which could develop at any point in time over the next two weeks and given strict instructions to stay on a reduced workload until the danger had passed. Scott had seized the literature the doctors had liberally handed out and Virgil suspected he had forwarded a copy to everyone in the family.
Gordon and Kayo had left in Two, volunteering to drop Dr Furnier off as soon as he had been cleared in the post rescue check-up. Virgil had been semi-conscious when they said their goodbyes, and he had a vague impression of hushed voices and a roar of green outside his window as they left.
But now, Virgil had been cleared to return home and his heart lifted at the sight of Thunderbird One gleaming in the late afternoon sun. Scott hovered as Virgil settled himself in for the journey home, only leaving to prepare for take off when he was certain Virgil was comfortable. Virgil suspected that even then, a few security cameras would be trained on him.
Within half an hour, the auto-pilot had been set and Scott returned to stare at him with anxious eyes.
“I’m fine, Scott,” said Virgil, trying to push away the twinge of irritation he felt at Scott’s insistent proximity. He knew his brother had been scared badly by the whole incident and Gordon had quietly talked to him about how Scott had reacted once he was fully awake, his worry evident even over comms.
“I know,” said Scott, leaning against the doorframe.
“Are we travelling sub-sonic?” asked Virgil, gesturing out the small window at the land passing beneath them.
“Yeah,” said Scott. “I just wanted to be sure you were okay.”
“You realise Kayo hauled ass to the hospital going at least Mach 6, right?”
“That was different,” said Scott with a scowl. “That was an emergency.”
“I just meant I’m not going to break,” said Virgil.
Scott grunted in response. Virgil eyed him carefully, considering his next move. Manipulating Scott into sharing his troubles was never a production to be taken lightly.
“I’m sorry,” said Scott, eventually.
Virgil raised an eyebrow. “Sorry as in a general ‘sorry this happened’ or sorry as in ‘every shit thing that I can’t prevent is my personal responsibility’?”
Scott glared at him. “I should never have sent you out there.”
“You didn’t, John did,” said Virgil with an exasperated look on his face. “And he’s not taking on blame that belongs to a literal spider.”
“You think John sent you out there?”
Virgil’s expression morphed into one of incredulity.
“Who else?”
“It wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for me!”
“How do you figure that?” demanded Virgil. “Explain it to me, Scott, because I’m not seeing the connection here.”
Scott scrubbed at his face and collapsed in the chair next to Virgil, staring past him with awful, haunted eyes.
“It’s just ever since Braman, ever since we found out, it’s been playing over and over in my mind. What I chose to do, what we could have done instead.”
“Scott,” said Virgil, his heart aching. “We couldn’t have known. Dad’s not going to blame you for not acting sooner.”
“No, I know, that’s not… Virgil, that’s not the issue, that was never the issue.” Scott shook his head and let out a hollow laugh. “No, I can’t help thinking about how I was so desperate to keep a piece of Dad alive, to keep his legacy going that I never once stopped to think about how it would affect you all. How it would change me.”
Virgil’s eyes widened, but he stayed silent at his brother’s side.
“Do you really think Dad would have wanted all this? God Virg, I was so eager, I never even thought about any of you.”
“We made our choices too,” said Virgil quietly. “It’s not like you forced us.”
“No? I put Alan in a rocket when he was, what? Fourteen? What fourteen year old is going to say ‘no thanks, I think I’ll do my algebra homework instead’? Come on, not even John would have done that, I practically bribed the kid to start his training.”
“Would you prefer the alternative?” asked Virgil. “All those families with lost loved ones? Do you really think any of us could have sat by knowing we had the machines and the skillset to save them? Do you think Dad could have?”
“No, of course not, it’s just…” Scott dropped his head in his hands. “This used to be so much easier.”
“What was?”
“Letting you all go.”
“What changed?”
“What do you think? Dad’s out there, Virg. He’s out there, for real, and we have a chance at getting him back.”
Scott sighed. “It’s been getting harder for a while though,” he admitted. “It used to be really easy, we were just doing what we’d always done. And then it got harder, because I had to accept the consequences that came with the responsibility of choosing to continue, of choosing to command. I was okay with that because, even after John nearly died, I thought we were nearly invincible. But then the Hood made it all the way to Mateo. And then the Mechanic arrived. And then the Chaos Crew too. Then Gordon lying in a hospital, Alan and Kayo nearly killed trying to secure our ticket to Dad, you all but dying in front of me. Virgil, that was literally yesterday. None of you look so invincible anymore.”
Virgil looked away, staring instead at the small bump on his hand. It was still red and a little inflamed although the pain had long since faded and the swelling was no more. From this side of the emergency, it was hard to believe there had been any kind of narrow escape.
“What will you do now?” he finally asked.
“Now?” Scott was silent for a moment. “Now, I have to account for the choices I made while in command.”
He shook himself and gave Virgil an unconvincing smile.
“How about you, you’re still okay?”
Virgil knew he wouldn’t get anything more from Scott that day. None of the guilt he was feeling for continuing to send them all into danger, none of the fear of their Dad rejecting him for failing at a task no one had ever expected him to complete. He wouldn’t hear any of it. Scott wouldn’t betray how helpless he felt watching Virgil laid out on a stretcher in front of him, just like Virgil wouldn’t tell him how helpless they all felt watching their eldest brother tear himself into pieces over a worn and tattered hope that was struggling to see the light of day.
He gave Scott a tired smile, and rested his head on his brother’s shoulder. “Yeah, I’m okay now.”
It was enough that he was still there.

Washington.
The two texted back and forth over the week. Mostly randomness with a splash of real life. A friendship was blooming with the text conversation but what else could come of it? Neither one seemed to want to touch the subject. Kenzie wasn't even sure what to make of the attention from Nate. She threw herself into work as she normally would.
MacKenzie spent a few days in Colorado Springs for work but took advantage of her time off by hiking the Garden of the Gods. She was was halfway through Palmers trail when she feels her phone and decides to stop for water and take in the view plus check her phone thinking it was work. She laughs to herself realizing it was in fact not work.
Nate: how’s Colorado Springs?
She snaps a picture of her view and sends it.
Kenzie: gorgeous as always
Nate: holy shit are you hiking alone?
Kenzie snaps a selfie where you can see she’s alone and sends it.
Kenzie: don’t worry not anything too dangerous today. Lol
Nate: ok… not worried. Anyways, thought maybe dinner could be in DC since we will both be there next week.
Kenzie thinks about it and starts walking again. She realizes dinner out of town may in fact make things less awkward.
Kenzie: depends on my schedule but that should work
Nate: good. Enjoy the rest of your hike.
MacKenzie did just that. One thing most people knew about her was she loved adventures and trying new things. She rarely goes to the same vacation spot twice. Always wanting to try new restaurants and really only frequents Gus’s place in Denver. She liked to be free which drove her mother insanely crazy but MacKenzie didn’t seem to care. Her dad was her biggest supporter. Constantly sending her wanderlust Instagram posts after she taught him how. At least her mom had home in Kenzie’s brother, Cameron. Cam was doing everything he was expected to do including recently proposing to his high school sweetheart which Kenzie thought was dumb as seniors in college. His life was his life that was for sure, well and maybe their mother's life too. She couldn't control Kenzie which meant Cam got all of her energy.
The flight to D.C. was a breeze but busy would be an understatement as MacKenzie met her client at the end of the week. The demands were insane in the time frame. She spent almost all weekend in her hotel room working and talking with her team back in Colorado.
Nate: would you want to come to the game? I have tickets.
Kenzie: I would love to but I don’t even know if I can do dinner I’m so swamped
Nate: you need to eat right?
Kenzie: I mean, yeah. I’ll order in
Nate: how about you come to my hotel, we have an amazing restaurant here. You can work and eat
MacKenzie thought it over as she looked out her window. Walking the block and a half to Nathan’s hotel tomorrow night seemed doable. He had a point that she needed to eat and could work while they ate. It would complete their wager from the card game in the same instance. Wondered if Gabe or one of the other players would be around to ensure the dinner happened. MacKenzie thought she wouldn’t have the awkwardness of it feeling like a date this way. Plus, she wanted to try the restaurant out since last time she was in town and another client mentioned it. Mosi was all for the dinner when she called ensuring Kenzie her condo's mail was indeed checked. She thought this was the perfect arrangement and MacKenzie couldn’t find a reason to say no. Thinking Nate would already be at the arena for the game she sent a text.
Kenzie: Yes, to dinner at your hotel if you are still up to it after the game
She starts typing away again and laughs when the ping is almost immediate.
Nate: Perfect. I'll text you when we are back on the bus.
MacKenzie decided to turn the game on while she worked. She normally would have something on as background noise while she worked. She knows she can get lost in work and wanted to make sure she knew to pack up her laptop and such waiting for Nathan's call. She hears his name and looks up to see him score with less than a minute left. The Avalanche was already been leading but that goal ensured their win. She decided to change then couldn’t decide if she should pack up her work yet. “How sure how much time would he take between the game and the bus?” Kenzie asked her reflection. She texted him nice game to see if he would respond. He did a few moments later so she packed up slowly. Kenzie walks down to the street turning to head over to his hotel, humming to herself trying to not over think this very simple dinner. She slows down as she sees the charter bus in front of the hotel. Fuck.
"MAAAAC! Good to see you!" Gabe's voice comes booming out of the bus with some others chiming in as the stepped off the bus. MacKenzie awkwardly smiles at the team and then catches Nathan out the side of her eye. He’s staring at her as he walks down the step.
"Did you walk?" Nathan looks down at MacKenzie puzzled.
"Well, hello. Nice game. And yes. Just two blocks." MacKenzie pulls at her loose curl and then slides her finger down her messenger bag.
"Ready for dinner? I see you brought your work." Nathan taps her bag with his knuckle. MacKenzie nods and follows Nathan into the hotel. She awkwardly stops and he realizes it. “Whatcha doin’ there?” Nate walked back so he was standing in front of Kenzie.
“Isn’t the restaurant that way?” She points in the direction of the sign she stopped next to.
“Yes but they deliver to the room and I’d rather change into sweats and let you work in comfort.” He pulls at his tie. “Less eyes too. Come on.” Nathan placed his hand briefly on MacKenzie’s lower back to lead her to the elevator.
“I normally take the stairs.” MacKenzie looks around Nate for the steps.
“My room is on floor 12 and I just had over 20 minutes of ice time. Can we please take the elevator?” Nathan looked into MacKenzie’s questioning eyes.
“Fine. You have a point.” She smiles but gets lost calculating if that time is high or low for him.
They make their way to Nathan’s room. MacKenzie is surprised how nice it is. She’s not sure what she expected but it wasn’t this. Nathan’s suits neatly hanging up. Sweats sitting in his open luggage next to the closet. She realizes he hasn’t moved from behind her.
“Everything okay?” He moves to grab a pair of shorts and shirt.
“Yeah. Just not what I was expecting. You literally live out of suitcase don’t ya?” She watches him take off his suit coat and gulps at how his shirt is sticking to him.
“Some trips it feels like that. This one we won’t be home until the 26th… then a home stand with a few games on the road… and I’m boring you. Set up wherever you want and I’m gonna go change then will be right back.” He heads to the bathroom shut the door softly.
MacKenzie stares at the uncomfortable looking desk chair in a moment of indecision wanting to be set up so she’s working when Nate returns, she decides the bed was a better option for her to sit. Getting out her laptop Kenzie starts typing as soon as she hears Nate opening the door. He smirks when he sees Kenzie on the bed and moves to the desk to find the menu. She cannot help watching him. His muscles easily seen in the shirt and shorts he picked. He hikes up his pant leg exposing his thigh. Kenzie coughs focusing back on her work again.
"Here it is." Nathan turns around and walks towards MacKenzie handing her the menu. She stares at the menu then her finger lands on a cheeseburger and fries. Nathan moves to the other side of the bed, sitting to call in the order. He hangs up and starts to move.
"You can stay here. That chair is horrible looking." MacKenzie looks over at Nathan and he stops moving then looks down at his feet before swinging them up and adjusting to sit on the bed.
"Thanks." He looks over at her screen. "So what exactly do you do?"
"Simple description... I am a social media consultant." MacKenzie giggles. "Speaking of... your social media..." "Is non-existent." Nathan finishes her statement.
"Yeah, only two posts. That’s shocking for someone your age. Nate, do you know how you could amplify your earnings post career?" MacKenzie moves her computer and shift so look at him. He rubs the back of his neck and rotates on his hip to look at her better.
"Yeah. No, yeah. I get it. Just not my thing but you looked at my socials?" He bites his lip.
"I did after we ran into you at the bar post-game. Would've felt funny giving you my number if you had a girlfriend." MacKenzie admits.
"No girlfriend. So did you say you watched the game?" Nate changes the subject which Kenzie made a mental note of.
"Background noise while working. You can turn the tv on now or just talk to me. You scored." Kenzie looks over at Nathan.
"Empty netter but yeah. Nice win." Nathan says softly. The knock on the door stops their conversation. "Oh, dinner!" Nathan pops up and answers the door.
Dinner was delicious. The two shared backgrounds such as where they were from, college for MacKenzie, boarding school and early days of hockey for Nathan. They were laughing at each other's stories which lead to both laying on their stomachs watching a video for MacKenzie's work on her laptop.
"Kenz... Kenzie. Wake up!" Nathan whispers and MacKenzie's groggy self pops up and lands on Nathan's naked torso.
"Holy fuck!" She yells out. Nathan's hands steady her.
"Hey." Nathan backs up and bends to look her in face. Panic written all over her face. "You okay? We fell asleep talking." He looks at her.
"Why didn't you wake me? What time is it? Fuck. Sorry. I'm on a schedule." MacKenzie pulls away and looks for her bag realizing Nathan plugged her computer in at some point.
"It's 6:30. We just slept. I sleep shirtless and, uh, must've taken it off in my sleep. Sorry, should've put in on before I woke you. Hold on." Nathan moves to the other side of the bed and throws his shirt back on. "Let me call you an uber." He grabs his phone.
"I can walk. I don't have a meeting until noon so I'm fine. Thank you." MacKenzie points to the bathroom and Nathan nods.
She stands in front of the mirror for way too long just looking at herself. Pinches her cheeks and starts ranking her fingers through their loose blonde curls making them manageable enough to put up in a high ponytail. She grabs Nathan’s toothpaste and brushes her teeth with her finger.
“Well, Mac. This will have to do.” She bobs on the balls of her feet to psych herself up. Returning to the room she notices that Nathan had changed and slipped on some shoes. “Whatcha doin’ Nate?”
“I’ll walk with you. I wanted to grab coffee from down the street before we leave for the airport.” He grabs his wallet.
“You don’t have to.” Kenzie whispers as she heads to her bag.
“I don’t, but I wanna.” Nate smiles at her. She notices those soft eyes again. Almost gray but then again blue.
They head out of room to the steps. MacKenzie took a deep breath not realizing she was holding it until they got to the door.
“Why good morning you two!” Gabe’s voice comes from around the corner with a bag and coffee in hand.
“Mornin’” Nate answers and pushes the cross walk button.
“Glad to see you Kenzie.” Gabe nods and starts whistling while heading back to the hotel.
“Don’t mind him.” Nate breaks the silence after crossing the street.
“I’m assuming he’s thinking you got lucky last night.” MacKenzie tries to control her racing heart.
“I’ll talk to him.” Nathan assures her. She stops and looks up at him.
“Did you want to?” She puts her hand on her head not sure she really said it out loud.
“What?” Nathan stops and looks at her confused.
“Did you want to sleep with me?” She looks to see if anyone could hear her.
“No. Well… damnit. Hi. Let me start over.” Nathan looks deep in her eyes and cups her face.
“Go ahead.” She’s not sure if the words actually could be heard or not.
“I like you. You are easy to talk to. In the short time I’ve known you I’m constantly wanting to know more. I’m just bad at dating.”
“Why do you say that?” She moves closer to him without thinking.
“I’m not romantic. Plus my job isn’t the easiest for most of the year to maintain a healthy relationship. Plus, there is those who just want me for what I could give them.” He drops his hand to her hip. She sees his chest rise and fall.
“Who says you aren’t romantic?” MacKenzie questions.
“Every girl I’ve dated.” Nathan grumbles. This makes Kenzie laugh. “Well, they have.”
“I like you too, Nate. You intrigue me.” She feels the heat in her cheeks.
“So to answer your original question, yes. I would very much like to be physical with you but I also want to date you. Like not to fuck it up by…” She stops him by pushing herself to her tip toes to softly kiss his cheek.
“Well, saying all that is a start in how not to fuck it up.” She smiles at him. “Let’s get me back to my hotel then we can visit this whole dating thing when you return to Denver.” She starts walking and he quickly grabs her hand to walk with her.
“Here we are.” He stops at the doors of her hotel. “So, I’ll see you in two weeks, Kenzie.” Nathan drags out the two while contorting his face.
“It’s not that long plus you will be busy and I have this plus another project to finish before then.” She rubs the back of his hand with her thumb realizing how large his hand was in comparison which could crush her hand if he wanted. “Thanks for dinner Nate.”
“Can I?” He starts and gulps. MacKenzie watches his Adam’s apple bob. “Can I kiss you?” He asks with a quiver in his voice. She nods her head yes. Nate brings his hands up to her jaw holding her face up while he leans in pressing his lips to hers. Kenzie kisses him back and cannot remember a first kiss quiet like that. He releases while sucking in a deep breath.
“I…” Kenzie touches her lips.
“Well, see you soon Kenzie.” He kisses her forehead then turns quickly to head back down the street leaving Kenzie wanting more.

Happy New Year, everybody! I know that Literally no one cares or will read this, but I have to rate and talk about what I’ve read this year and this is my page, so deal with it.
2020 may have been a dumpster fire of a year, but I did read so me pretty good books. I didn’t get to read as many books as I wanted (like always), but that’s life. If you couldn’t tell, I do have a preference for romance novels, and these selections are very... 🌈 and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Here we go:
- Lies we Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley (4/10)
- I think I could write a dissertation about why I have a problem with this book, but I think I can just stop with “a white lady writing an interracial queer romance in the 1960s where the lead white character is literally a racist” should about cover it. Absolutely disappointed.
- Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (10/10)
- Oh my god does Casey McQuiston know how to write a book. Classic enemies to lovers, my favorite trope. This is my comfort novel that I use as a form of escapism, and probably the reason I didn’t read many new books, as I reread it about five times. It’s my comfort novel, and I come back to it every time I need to feel happy. I’ve made three of my friends read this book, and I recommend it to everyone
- These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling (8/10)
- It’s sapphic, it has witches, and it’s adorable; what more could you possibly want? The ending left me wanting more. I was finally able to buy the sequel and I can’t wait to get into it.
- Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan (7/10)
- I think this book is sort of a classic when it comes to gay YA. This was a pretty good book, but it took me awhile to get into it.
- Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins (9/10)
- What did I say about enemies to lovers? HRH was regarded as sapphic Red, White, and Royal Blue, which I think is all you need to know to be interested. This book and short, sweet, and to the point. It’s an easy read (I read it twice, both times in one day). I think there could’ve been some more character building, but it’s so adorable I literally do not care. When I say I want more cute gay romcoms, they should use HRH as the blueprint.
- It’s Not Like It’s a Secret by Misa Sugiura (7/10)
- A cute, interracial sapphic love story where no white people are involved (the main character is Japanese American and her love interest is Mexican American). This coming of age story deals with acceptance, cultural differences, racism, and coming out. I think some of the points it was trying to delve into were too much on the nose at some times, but I really enjoyed this book.
- The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee (9/10)
- A fun romp set some time in the 1700s with a chaotic bi as the main lead? Count me in! I read this whole series this year, including the novella (the gentleman’s guide to getting lucky), and I loved every second of it. It’s an adventure series with some romance sprinkled in (a hella slow burn, but definitely worth it). The whole series has gay, bi, lesbian, and ace aro representation, and I was in love the entire time.
- You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson (8/10)
- The black sapphic book I needed. Liz Lighty decides she wants to leave her hometown and go to college, but after losing the financial aid she was counting on, she remembers the scholarship that prom queen gets every year, and decides to run. Sprinkle in a cute love story, and I’m hooked.
- The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (10/10)
- I... cannot put into words how this book made me feel. When I finished TSOA, I cried all night trying to recover. Beautifully written, and I still can’t get over Achilles and Patroclus. One of my favorite books this year.
- Sorry Not Sorry by Naya Rivera
- After Naya’s tragic passing in July, I struggled to find her autobiography anywhere. However, I was finally able to get my hands on it, and am so glad that I did. Naya Rivera was just as genuinely funny and carefree as her previous costars have said, and I wish the world could’ve gotten more of her.
Not pictured:
- Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst (9/10)
- Sapphic love story about a princess who has been betrothed to a prince from a nearby country her whole life who instead falls in love with his sister. The main character, Denna, also possesses magical powers, which is forbidden in their land. One of my favorite things about this book is that it’s set in medieval times, but no one cares about queer relationships. The only problem with Denna falling in love with the princess is that she’s betrothed to her brother and nothing else. I recently bought the sequel to this book as well, and I’m excited to read it
- The After Series (books 1-2) by Anna Todd (-400/10)
- I was curious about this series because of how terrible the movies are, and needed to read them myself. I apologize to myself every day that I every even wasted my time on these two books. If I ever see Anna Todd, it’s on sight immediately. Not only is the writing terrible, but the romanticization of abusive relationships is absolutely unacceptable. I think I could take less issue with these books if the author wrote them as a “what to look for in men you should never date” rule book, but it isn’t. I could actually write an essay on why these books are more harmful than entertaining and how I genuinely think this series should have never been published. Also, Harry Styles did not deserve this.
I also discovered WEBTOON this year, and here are some of my favorites that I have read:
- Always Human by creator walkingnorth, a finished WLW story which was absolutely beautiful to look at and delightful to read.
- Lore Olympus by creator Rachel Smythe. I don’t think you can find too many people who haven’t heard of this story, but it’s a retelling of the Hades and Persephone mythology, and I adore it.
- Novae by creators KaixJu. A historical, queer and paranormal romance about a necromancer who falls for an astronomer.
- My Lady Artemisia by creator rimarza. This WEBTOON is a little bit newer with fewer episodes, about a knight tasked with guarding the princess, which starts to prove difficult once she starts to gain feelings for the princess, and an impending threat might cause her to past to come to the surface.
Of course, I’ve also spent a lot of my time on A03. I know I’ve read more, but here are the ones I bookmarked and have come back to this year:
- kiss me (if you mean it) by nerdybutpunk
- Carry On fanfic, short but sweet, absolute fluff
- Camp Llwynywermod by bleedingballroomfloor
- Red, White, and Royal Blue AUwhere Henry and Alex are camp counselors. It’s so good and I find myself waiting every wed and sat for the updates.
I read more this year than I have in a long time, and I enjoyed it most of the time. My goal for 2021 is to read at least two books a month and to expand my horizons to something that isn’t YA and isn’t romance. Also to find Anna Todd and tell her off. Hopefully we can accomplish some of that.

A Sky Full of Stars

Fastening the laces on her boots Mackenzie tried to figure out if tonight counted as a first date or if it was just her and Gavin picking up where they'd left off 15 years ago. The butterflies in her stomach certainly made it feel like a first date but then Gavin had always had that ability to make her knees feel weak. He only had to flash that boyish smile at her. Mac had anticipated the possibility that Gavin would ask her out and she’d prepared speech, which she had rehearsed countless times in her head that covered all the key points. That it wasn’t a good idea to retread old ground, it would ruin the friendship they’d built since her return to Millhaven and that she was still hurting from the separation with James.
But when Gavin had come swaggering into the office as she looked over his business accounts, seemingly self-assured and asked if he could take her out on a date she found her body betraying her rational mind, her cheeks blushed and her heart beat faster as she said yes, she’d love to. Her heart had swelled at the relief which flickered across his face. Mac knew that an awful lot of Gavin's bravado was built on shaky ground that he was constantly looking for reassurance and validation.
A knock at the door startled Mac from her meditations. Jumping up from the bottom of the stairs she dove for the door in eagerness, resting her hand on the doorknob she took a calming breath as she opened the door and greeted Gavin. The soft glow of the hallway light cast across his face framing him beautifully. “Hey.” She breathed, caught a little off guard.
“Hey.” He smiled. “You ready?”
“Er yeah just give me one sec let me just say goodnight to Jessica.”
“Sure.” Gavin nodded.
Turning to head to the living room Mac rolled her eyes and chastised herself. Get a grip, she thought, you should be used to the sight of his face.
Mac made her way over to Jessica who was sitting on the floor by the coffee table playing chess with Casey, her babysitter. Mac leaned down and placed a soft kiss on Jessica’s forehead.
“Okay sweetheart,” Mac cooed, “you can stay up till 9, no later alright.”
“Yes, mom.” Jessica’s eyes remained fixed on the board trying to work out her next move
“Casey if there are any issues just call Grace and feel free to help yourself to anything in the fridge.”
“Thanks, Mrs. Stephens.” Mac had learned not to let the use of her married name cut her anymore.
“See you in the morning,” Mac said as she gave Jessica another kiss before whispering. “Knight to...” But Jessica cut her off.
“Mom no, that’s cheating, let me figure it out.”
Mac stood up straight, hands up in mock surrender. “Okay, okay just wanted to help.” She said as he backed out of the living room laughing quietly to herself.
“Everything okay?” Gavin asked as Mac closed the door behind her and they made their way to his truck.
“Yeah, Jessica found an old chessboard of mine so I’ve been teaching her, but we’re at the stage where I’m no longer allowed to help. Apparently.”
Gavin made his way over to the driver’s side. “Ah. Yeah, Nate is very much at that stage as well. Has been since she was about 5.”
Both climbed into the truck and Gavin turned the ignition.
Gavin hadn’t told Mac where they were going, he simply advised her to wrap up warm. Making their way down the road they sat in silence for a while before Gavin pointed to the glove compartment.
“Do me a favor and grab a tape out of there. Be nice to have some music.”
“Sure.” Mac thought nothing of it till she opened the compartment and saw there was only one tape in there, her mouth dropped when she recognized her handwriting on the case. Gavin was watching her from the corner of his eye.
“Oh my God Gavin is this,” Mac snatched up the cassette, turning it over in her hands, her careful and clear script showing the song and artists and her artwork as a cover. “I can’t believe you kept this.”
“Of course I kept it.” He glanced at her smiling. “Most thoughtful gift I’ve ever had.”
Mac could feel tears prick in the corner of her eyes. Leaning across the cab she placed an arm across Gavin’s shoulders as she gave a peck on the cheek, his stubble rough but not unpleasant against her soft lips. They glanced nervously at one another, the atmosphere in the cab becoming thick and heavy with anticipation. Sitting back in her seat, Mac opened the cassette box and put the tape in the deck. She smiled with glee when the soft sounds of Blackbird by The Beatles wafted from the speakers.
“You always had the best taste in music.”
Mac leaned back in the seat and smiled at Gavin. “I think I know where you're taking me.”
***
Gavin parked the truck and cut the engine so that the music would keep playing. Mac moved to open the door but Gavin laid a hand on her shoulder. “Just wait a sec, let me get everything sorted.”
Mac nodded and Gavin hopped out. Mac felt the truck move slightly as he lowered the tailgate as he stepped into the back. Looking through the window she watched as Gavin moved the plastic covering revealing blankets, cushions, and a picnic basket and set about rearranging everything. When he was done he looked through the window at Mac, smiling and beckoning for her to come out. Mac turned up the volume on the music and stepped out of the truck.
Gavin held his hands out to Mac who took hold of them for support as she put one foot onto the wheel and pushed herself up, swinging her other leg over the side of the truck and stepped into the flatbed. She stood staring out across the view before her, the view of the valley with Millhaven off in the distance and the forest stretching far and wide. The night air littered with bright stars. For the time in a long time, she felt like she was home. Mac cupped her hands together, bringing them to her mouth blowing hot air into them to warm them.
“You know the first time we did this it was summer.”
Gavin gestured for her to sit down. “Don’t worry I’ll keep you warm.” He said as he knelt to grab something from the picnic basket. “Hot chocolate.” He grinned, shaking the flask as he picked up two mugs.
Handing the mugs to Mac he sat down beside her, pulling a blanket over them before opening the flask. He poured them each a small portion of hot cocoa before closing the flask and laying it beside him as he took a mug from Mac, he held it out to toast. “To second chances?”
They clinked mugs. “Second chances.”, Mac whispered before taking a small sip, watching Gavin. She brushed her hair away from her face, “I remember for our other first here we had champagne.”
Gavin looked at her over his mug as he drank, gathering his thoughts. “Do you remember that first with fondness?”
Mac reached out a hand, caressing his cheek with her palm, “Of course I do.”
Gavin looked away, somewhat embarrassed gathering his feelings before he looked at her again. “It’s just, you know it wasn’t my finest hour our break-up and I was worried that might have tarnished any memory you had of me.”
Mac dropped her hand. “I can’t lie. It did for a little while, you accusing me like that in front of all my friends. But as time went on,” she shrugged. “I realized I hadn’t put a lot of work into us when I was at college. I let you carry that load a little too much.”
“So you forgive me?”
Mac smiled warmly at him and leaned forward to give a chaste kiss on the lips. “Yes.” She said as she pulled apart, his hazel eyes seemed to ignite with a desire she hadn’t seen nor felt in a long time.
Finishing her cocoa Mac placed her mug on top of the roof of the cabin before shuffling down to lie on her back to look up at the stars. Gavin drained his mug, placing it alongside hers before also moving to lie on his back beside her. Silence fell between them again, the sounds of the forest mingling with the music from her mixed tape.
“Any chance of spotting a shooting star do you think?” She asked as she looked over at Gavin he was watching her intently.
“Possibly. Although it’s been a while since I did some stargazing.”
“I assume then you’re still hopeless with the constellations and their names.”
Gavin looked to the night sky, pointing to random clusters of stars. “Oh yeah, the erm, the skid bucket, and the onion.”
Giggling Mac turned on her side, sitting up one arm as she took hold of Gavin’s hand, drawing out the constellations. “You mean Cetus and Orion.” She looked down at him, her long auburn hair falling around her face, there’s eyes locked on one another as she let go of his hand. “Guess I wasn’t a very good teacher.”
Gavin moved to mirror her position, reaching out to brush her hair from her face, his palm resting against her cheek, his voice was low and husky when he spoke “No. I was just distracted by something else."
Mac's breath hitched, closing her eyes when Gavin lightly ran his thumb across her lips before his hand shifted to rest at the nape of her neck. His hot breath tickled her lips before he laid his mouth on hers. The sharpness of his stubble against her skin was in stark contrast to how soft and tender his kiss was as if he was asking for permission to deepen it. Mac's answer came in the form of her hand fisting his jacket, pulling him closer. It was all the invitation Gavin needed as he rolled her onto her back, conscious to straddle her hips to keep his weight off her.
The feeling of Gavin on top of her caused Mac to moan into his mouth. It had been so long since she felt desired like this and if she could engage her rational mind, to tell herself why this was too much too fast she would have ignored it. Unzipping his jacket she pushed it from his shoulders and they broke apart, panting as he sat up to remove the item, while she worked on removing her own. Gavin’s mouth was on her again in an instance as his hand slipped under her shirt, she gasped at his cold touch against her warm skin.
“Sorry.”
“‘S okay,” Mac mumbled in pleasure. “Don’t stop. But the first time we did this it was also summer.” They smiled at one another, sharing the joke as the memory of that night shone brightly in their eyes. Gavin returned his lips to hers, his tongue sweeping into her mouth as his hand under her shirt drifted upwards.
When he ran the pad of his thumb over the delicate lace of her bra, teasing her sensitive bud, Mac grabbed his thick lush hair, running her slender fingers through it. It felt so good to have him close to her, him touching her like this but she wanted more of him. Letting go of his hair she ran her hands down the length of his muscular and toned body, stopping when she reached his belt buckle.
Taking the hint Gavin pulled his hand out from her shirt and sat up slightly as he worked on unbuttoning Mac’s pants. Without being told Mac lifted her hips to make it easier for him to pull down her pants and underwear and when he slid a finger into her folds, his thumb massaging her clit, Mac let out a soft groan at his touch. She knew it wouldn't take much to bring her to the edge, she honestly couldn't remember the last time she'd been touched like this, with care and love.
"Gavin." She pleaded as she pushed his jeans off his hips.
Not needing to be told twice Gavin removed his fingers from inside her and rested his weight on his arms, placing them either side of Mac's head, they looked intently into one another's eyes with Mac holding his length as she helped guide him into her. She was tight and wet and Gavin buried his face into her neck muffling his groans.
Wrapping her arms around his neck, her mouth close to his ear Mac whispered. "It's been a while." She suddenly felt self-conscious.
Lifting his head to look at her Gavin spoke quietly. “We don’t have to...”
But Mac covered his mouth with her hand, silencing him. “Just be gentle, okay.”
He nodded, smiling kindly which made his eyes sparkle, and his cheeks dimple. Mac realized for the first time how much she’d missed him. Falling for him came so easily to her, he always was the most handsome man she’d ever known.
Gavin shifted his weight slightly, so he could lean more on one side to free up a hand. Taking hold of Mac’s hand he kissed her fingers tenderly as he slowly rolled his hips back and forward. “Whatever you need.” He whispered, letting go of her hand so he could once mare slip his own underneath her shirt, his fingers dancing across her skin before he began palming her breasts.
Mac’s eyes rolled back in her head and she arched into him. “Fuck. Gavin.” She panted, she was suddenly desperate to touch him, to feel his skin against her fingers, reaching down she slipped her hands into his jeans, grabbing at his ass. Gavin let out a groan.
“You always had the best bum of all the boys.” Mac smiled when soft chuckles shook Gavin’s body at her confession. Pressing her lips to his ear, her voice laced with desire as she spoke. “I used to love watching you play baseball, your ass in those tight, white trousers, bent over the plate, so pert. Mmm. Could just take a bite” She whispers, taking his lobe between her teeth.
Gavin hissed, his head resting against her shoulder. “Jesus Mac.” He panted as he increased his pace. “Fuck. Mac. You feel so good.”
Moving his hand from her breast, sliding it down her torso he slipped his fingers between her legs and started massaging her clit, Mac let out a strangled cry. Smiling to himself Gavin covered her mouth with his, kissing her like he wanted to devour her, capturing her moans and mews as she reached the climax of her orgasm. His own soon followed and he collapsed on top of her, both panting heavily. Gavin enjoyed the feeling of being held in Mac’s arms as they calmed their breathing.
Stroking his hair, Mac placed a kiss on his cheek, breathing in the scent of him, pine cones, and soap. Looking up at the night sky her vision slowly came back into focus as she watched the stars, she smiled as she saw a shooting star pass overhead, closing her eyes she made a wish.
Mac gently nudged Gavin to rouse him. "Hey. You missed it."
"Certainly didn't sound like I missed it."
Mac burst into fits of laughter. "I mean a shooting star, you idiot."
“Oh.” Gavin lifted himself and smiled down at Mac, slowly pulling himself out of her. “Nice to know I still have it.” He bragged, tucking himself back into his underwear, and redoing his jeans.
“God.” Mac cried out with mock exasperation as she pulled up her pants and underwear. “You’re such a bloke sometimes.”
“With a fine ass though.” Gavin picked up a blanket and as he laid down on his side next to Mac covering them both with it as he continued poking fun at Mac. “Have you been ogling me the whole time you’ve been back then.”
“Obviously,” Mac said grinning, turning to face him. “I hate seeing you go, but boy, do I love watching you leave.”
“Well, now I feel all self-conscious.” Gavin jokes. “Every time I’m around you from now on, all I will be thinking about is you checking out my ass. And what happens if you find another ass you like more.”
Giggling Mac pushed Gavin onto his back, kissing him to shut him up. “Yours has always been the ass for me.” She said when she broke the kiss.
“Promise?” Gavin asked smiling, as he slid an arm around Mac’s waist.
“Promise.” She whispered as he rested her head on his shoulder, making sure they were both covered with the blanket.
Gavin placed a kiss to Mac’s temple as she snuggled closer to him. As silence fell over them, for the first time they noticed the music was no longer playing, the only sound was the forest and their soft breathing. And as they lay there in one another's arms, happy to have found each other again, a second shooting star passed by overhead.

┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ⋞ 〈 ⏣ 〉 ⋟ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈
You were sitting at lunch, minding your own business, listening in on conversations. The cafeteria is buzzing like usual, people walking to tables, shouting across the room, and making disgusting combinations that you wouldn’t want to try.
Looking over to your right you see the popular squad. More of the cringy teens you’d find nowadays. They were laughing and shouting, the smell of spice and way to much cologne filled the air. You gag a bit at the intense smell.
As you were looking at the table, one of the boys caught on a winked at you, in response, you looked away, disgusted. You continue to eat you’re lunch, talking to your friends.
“Hey, did you do something to the boys over there?” Mackenzie asks, glancing over at the group of boys. You look over and see them all staring at you, with a mischievous look except one.
The boy had black hair, spiked up a bit. He had a nose piercing. He was looking away, with a blush on his face, messing with his food or the necklace he was wearing. His name is as Blaze Bowden.
You turn back to Mackenzie and shrug. “I didn’t do anything, I don’t understand their problem.” She looks back at them, lifting her eyebrow a bit. They all turn away in unison, going back to cracking jokes. Mackenzie rolls her eyes and takes a bite of her brownie, with a minor scowl on her face. You continue to eat your lunch, with the feeling of curiosity itching you.
After finishing your last class of the day, you leave the building exhausted. You yawn a big yawn, and suddenly. Bump. “Are you okay?” You hear someone say. The voice was deep but not too deep, it was calming but energetic at the same time. You couldn’t pinpoint who it was, however. You look up and was met with the same boy from the cafeteria.
He was holding out his hand for you to take. You stand up. “Oh, thank you, Sorry abo it bumping into you,” “Ah, it’s fine, I was acatully looking for you, ironically.” He finger guns and you and plasters a fake smile on his face. “Oh, what do you need,” you giggle looking at him.
Blaze looks to the side, his face slowly turning red. “Well, just follow me.” He takes your hand and leads you to a more private place. “You’re not going to murder me, are you?”
“Why would I do that, I’m to hot to be a murder.” “Most murders tend to be attractive,” “ha ha.”
Blaze leads you to a spot next to one of the biggest trees in the school yard. The school itself is about a mile and a half away. The tree is surrounded by flowers, animals, and a small bench.
“So, what do you need to ask?” You question, as the two of you sit down. Blaze puts his hand behind his neck and glances over to the side. After a minute, he sighs and looks back over at you.
“I have something to tell you,” “That is?” “I like you y/n.” Blaze coves his face with his hand and looks up at the schi, you can see the reflection in his eyes. You can feel yourself heat up, platter listening to his confession. “I don’t know what to say,” you stutter out, unable to comprehend words.
While, you two haven’t spoken much, you have somehow fallen for the loud mouthed boy, but never expected him to like you, he flirted with many people after all. “So, you don’t like me?” He looks down at you, tensed. You can see the hurt in his eyes. The despair. The sadness. The embarrassment. However, that’s not the case
“No, I like you too,” When I tell you, the boy’s eyes lit up. He looked over at you, in surprise. He grabbed your arm and stared into your eyes, smiling ear to ear. “Really? You do?!” He yelled, standing up and spinning in a circle, laughing. “Let’s go, I got a lover!”
You giggle at his exaggerated reaction, and he pulls you up and starts spinning you around, after spinning for a minute, you both get dizzy and stop, laughing at your dumb antics. He looks into your eyes, and you look into his. “Can I kiss you?” You stare at his shell shock for a bit as he looks at you determined. You gave in and nodded and you two kissed.
The kiss was like a firework, even from a simple touch, it felt amazing. He pulled you closer to him and put his arm around your waist, you put your arms on his neck. In that moment, you forgot where you were, how you look, and other people’s opinions. The kiss lasted for only a couple seconds but it felt like years. After it ended, he pulled you into a hug and started spinning around with you.
The two of you spin, laugh and crack jokes until, you both get picked up from school.
The next day of school, Blaze stayed outside waiting for you and the two of you walk inside together. Confident. Happy. You can feel the stared from your peers but for some reason, you feel very confident. The two of you separate and sit down at your usual tables.
“Wow, wtf happened yesterday?” Mackenzie asked, looking between you and Blaze. You laugh. “We just had a conversation is all.” “Conversation, what kind of conversation?” “Oh you know, taking about how we were going to start dat-“ you were cut of by a person yelling, “You’re dating!?!?”
You two look over and see a boy yelling at blaze, who is sitting there not paying attention, he looks like he’s in euphoria. The boy yelling at him wasn’t paying attention. His brown hair bounced as he was yelling and his brackets jingled ever so often from his exaggerated hand movements.
“Calm down Jack, why are you so angry.” “I’m not angry, I’m just surprised you got a girlfriend/boyfriend before me!” This made blaze snicker.
You turn back and look at Mackenzie, who is analyzing you. “You seem happier and calmer then normal. Did blaze really impact you that much?” “Yeah, he did. I’m glad he’s my boyfriend.” Mackenzie analyzes you one more time, and gives you a smirk. “Okay have fun with your .....” She pauses turning back to Blaze, “what do I call him?” You think for a moment, and hit the perfect nickname did him, “Yeah, I’ll definitely have fun with my sunshine.”

paths crossed (Fitz x Mack)
AN ~ “Mack helps a stranded Fitz”, prompted by @agentmanatee for my @mcukinkbingo “Fitz x Mack” square. No actual smut, this time just a meetcute to enjoy! (although, if you were hoping for something smuttier, there’s plenty of prompts left to choose from!)
Relationship / Prompt: Leo Fitz x Alphonso Mackenzie Rating: G Tags: Meetcute, Fluff, Crush
Read on AO3 (~1200wd)
paths crossed
All in all, it had been a pretty average day for Mack, and the frankly miserable amount of traffic that stood between him and his next instalment of Die Hard was not making things any better, but at least he had his classic rock station… and a front row seat to some poor guy who was having an even worse day than he was.
The stranger was a sort of weedy-looking young man. He wore a checked shirt hanging open over a lightly grease-stained tank, and he was currently agonising over the contents of the bonnet of his car – a faded red number, something early-2000s and boxy. The brand plate had long since fallen off, which was always a good sign. Mack screwed up his face in sympathy as the stranger kicked emphatically at the tire and visibly regretted it.
“Oh, mate,” he chuckled, sucking air through his teeth. The stranger must have been by the side of the road for a while. It was warm out, his forehead was so sweaty his curls were starting to stick, and he gave up on cursing within a few seconds with a pantomime-scale sigh. Bracing his arms on the front of the car, he frowned into its depths – only to jump back a moment later, when something popped and black smoke bloomed up into the air.
Mack grimaced. There was nothing else for it, he knew, but to put his thoughts of kicking back with a cold beer and last night’s barbecue leftovers on hold. He indicated out of the traffic, and pulled up just in front of the broken-down car. The gratitude on the stranger’s face was all he needed to see to make it worthwhile though – especially when he pulled a bottle of water from under the dashboard. For a few seconds, it was all the poor man could do to skull it down until he ran out of breath to drink with.
Panting, the stranger finally let the precious bottle down from his lips, wiped his forehead again, and eyed the man who had come to his rescue.
“Sorry,” he breathed. “It’s been a long day.”
For a moment, Mack was struck by the unusual accent.
“Scottish?”
“Fitz,” the man replied, which served to answer well enough, as he offered a hand for the shaking.
“I like a man who keeps it short and sweet,” Mack said with a smile, shaking Fitz’s hand briefly but firmly. “You can call me Mack.”
“Short and sweet.” Fitz nodded, smiling back now. “Don’t s’pose you’ve got any jumper cables?”
Mack laughed, and nodded at the smoking junker. “I think you’re a bit beyond that, Turbo.”
“Okay,” Fitz conceded. “Got a spare engine in that trunk then?”
“Let me take a look – I’m a mechanic. There’s a servo down the road; we can probably get you what you need.”
Fitz grimaced. “Like what, a new car?”
Mack chuckled, grabbed a grease rag, and began his examination.
--
Unfortunately for Fitz, the repair job was a little more than Mack could manage on his own by the side of the road. Fortunately, he knew a guy with a tow truck who had agreed to come and meet them, so now there was nothing to do but wait. Fitz wasn’t sure how he felt about that. He hated to keep Mack from whatever he must have been heading toward when he had pulled over to help, but at the same time, something kept him from verbalising an offer for him to leave.
“It could be a while,” Mack said.
“You go on home, then,” Fitz felt like he should have responded. “I’ll wait. Thanks, you’ve been very helpful, but I can take it from here.”
Instead, he asked; “So… going anywhere special? I mean, before I interrupted?”
“Nah,” Mack assured him. “Just a night in with a movie and some leftovers. You?”
“Same, probably. What movie?”
“Die Hard. I’m up to the second one, this time ‘round.”
“Good choice. Classic. The first two are the best, though. Same for most franchises I s’pose, isn’t it?”
Gradually, the evening air started to cool around them. They sat leaning on the bonnet of Mack’s car, discussing the merits and pitfalls of all their favourite franchises, throwing pins all over the map, whether they be blockbusters or cult films or trashy personal favourites or the ones that hit hard regardless of who had heard of them. Fitz was gesticulating wildly through a rant about the reveal that Rey was related to Emperor Palpatine when the tow truck finally arrived, and his hands dropped back to his side and he let the words die in his throat, suddenly reminded of reality and the passing of time, and how much of Mack’s he had been taking up.
(Mack, for his part, felt unusually disheartened when Fitz fell silent. It was strange to think how long – or rather, how little – such a passionate presence had been in his life).
--
Crowded together, they sat in silence in the tow truck cabin. It was only a little way down the road to the mechanics’, but both were suddenly hyperconscious of how easily time had passed between them just before, and now…
Fitz tried to study himself in the window out of the corner of his eye, and adjust his hair without moving his arm too much, because he didn’t want Mack to notice that he wanted Mack to notice. Worst of all was the all-too-common struggle with his tongue, resisting the urge to add ‘and another thing-‘ or ‘you know what you should watch–‘ or ‘I’ve never met someone who gets it the way that you do.’
Meanwhile, Mack studied his own hands, trying not to think about Fitz’s and the passion they exuded. Trying not to imagine the utter relief of coming home to someone who somehow held his rhythm so easily. Fleetingly, he entertained the possibility of letting his hand fall open into the dip between their pressed-together legs. Maybe Fitz would know what that meant, maybe he would take it. Maybe, maybe -
But it was too late.
They pulled into the mechanics, and there was a moment of stagnant silence after the engine cut. Neither quite had the guts to salvage it, so instead they climbed out of their separate doors. They helped Mack’s friend haul Fitz’s car into the shop, booked it in, stuffed the contents of the car into a mismatched collection of bags they’d dredged up so it wouldn’t be trapped inside overnight. They farewelled Mack’s friend at the kerbside. And then, it was over.
(Unless..?)
Fitz hung up the payphone more reluctantly than he would have thought possible. Uncomfortable, inescapable reality was upon them.
“I called a cab,” he said. “Shouldn’t be too long.”
You can leave, if you want. He didn’t say it.
I’ll leave you to it then. Mack didn’t either.
“I’ll wait with you,” Mack said instead.
“No,” Fitz objected at last, “It’s alright – I mean, I couldn’t –“
“It’s no trouble,” Mack interrupted, and smiled. “Come on. It’s been a long day, and this place does killer sausage rolls.”
“Sounds good,” Fitz agreed. “My shout?”

Knock, Knock. Chapter 29.
Tumblr media
Chapter Summary: The parents have arrived. Also, how do people see so much detail in such a little picture?
Pairing: (single) Jensen x Reader
Warnings: Cussing, Fluff.
Word Count: 3100+
Series Masterlist
A/N: Ok this gif has nothing to do with this chapter other than the parents, (aka Mom and Dad) but I came across this gif and had to do it. I mean look at him. Is that allowed???
Part 29:
Mackenzie and you had already stopped at a few stores getting items for your school. Conversation seemed to flow extremely easily for two people who had just met. She was telling you about her life, and you were telling her about how you came to meet Jensen. Then you explained about your ex-fiance and all the trouble of having to move out. You told her how you were close with the Padaleckis and how they took you in at the beginning. Needless to say after hearing your stories of your ex, she was definitely on your side. Then you let her in on how her brother and you came to be roommates.
“So teaching? What made you want to be in that career field?” she asked as you headed to get groceries at your last stop.
“Umm, I’m not sure really. I guess I’ve always had a heart for it. When I got to college, and was helping mentor younger girls in my church, I realized counseling was a major part of my life. So after graduating with my bachelors, I hopped right back into school to get my masters.” you smiled looking at her then back at the road.
“That’s so sweet.” she gushed. “Also extremely brave.” she laughed.
“How so?” you laughed with her.
“I know I couldn't handle all that drama and work. It takes a special someone who can sit down with younger kids and listen to their problems. I feel like I wouldn’t have any good advice to give.”
“Well, you’re not wrong by saying a majority is just drama. Especially since I work with younger kids, but I get my fair share of more intense things family wise. Plus, sometimes it’s not just about giving advice. Sometimes they just want to be heard, and allowed to have a voice.” you shrugged like it was that easy.
“Hmmm, never really thought of it that way.” she processed.
“A lot of people don’t, but the more people you tell? The more people will be able to help.”
She turned to you while you were focused on the road. A grin formed on her lips. She liked you. You were a good fit for her brother. The world needed more people as calming and understanding as you.
“Ok, we’re here.” you said pulling in a parking spot at the farmers market. “I like to get the fresh stuff here. Anything else we need, we can get at the grocery store.” you smiled taking off your seatbelt, and grabbing your purse.
“Farmers market? Oh my God! I didn’t know there was this close to Jay’s house!” she said getting out and walking around the front of the car meet you.
“Yeah, it’s great isn’t it?” you smiled as you both started making your rounds around the stands.
You were about 10 minutes into your shopping when you noticed a group of teenagers staring and talking to each other.
You slightly nudged Mackenzie as you picked up a fruit and fake examined it.
“Hey at my 3 o’clock. Does that group of kids look like they’re studying us?” you whispered.
She secretly moved her head just enough to check it out.
“Yeah, actually.” she answered picking up a fruit with you and looking at it too. “You think we got spotted?”
“Not sure. Could just be teenagers being teenagers. I don’t know exactly what they could have spotted. My face still isn’t in any tabloids that I know of.” you said moving on to a new fruit. “You don’t think they could possibly recognize me even with the sunglasses do you?”
“There’s no telling with people. Some people get so into it and really pay attention to detail. But hey. If you want to head back to the car, I can grab a few more things and check out and meet you there.”
“No, no. It’s fine. I’m sure I’m just in my own head.” you said taking a deep breath and looking back at the group of teenagers. “Let’s just grab the last couple of things, and head out.” you said putting an uneasy smile on your face.
“Ok, sounds good. But if we need to go any sooner. Let me know.”
You continued your walk around the market trying to ignore people's eyes. You were paranoid that someone was going to say something, when really you had seen half of these people every weekend for the past 2 months. All the owners of stands practically knew you like a friend with how often you came. This was one of your safe places. Hopefully that wouldn’t be taken from you.
As you were both headed back to the car, you thought your were in the home stretch of not getting caught. Then a teenage girl, and her friend approached you and Mackenzie just as you were loading up the food.
“Hey, I hope we aren’t bothering you two, but we just had to ask.” the shorter red head said.
“Yeah, our families own some of the booths so we usually just hang around here. We noticed you two and you both look kinda familiar.” the taller blonde one added.
“Well, I come here almost every weekend, but that’s about all that I think you would recognize me from.” you said simply hoping they would move on and not ask any more questions.
“I thought I had seen you around. It’s just... something else stood out to me though.” the redhead said furrowing her eyebrows.
“Wait a minute.” the other said making your heart skip a beat. “You.” she said pointing to Mackenzie. “Are you Jensen Ackles sister?” she said with excitement.
“Umm,” Mackenzie laughed. “Yeah, yeah that’s me.” she said kinda unsure of how to approach it. Clearly though the girl knew, so denying it was no help.
“OMG! Wait, if you’re his sister…” you could see them mental tally up all the facts. “You look a whole lot like the girl that was in all those news reports about Jensen maybe having a girlfriend!” she said a little louder than you wanted her to.
“I’m sorry girls, but you have the wrong person. I’m just one of Mackenzie's friends that lives in town.” you said quickly lying.
“But you have the same hair, and looks! You have to be-”
“There are a lot of girls with Y/H/C hair, and looks like me. I mean the world is a big place.” you shrugged going to open your front door.
“But the coincidence-”
“Hey girls. I promise this isn’t the girl in all the pictures. She hasn’t even met my brother before.” Mackenzie said stepping in to defend you. “She’s just an old friend that I’m meeting back up with. Now if you’ll excuse us we have to run some more errands.” she smiled opening her door as well. “It was nice meeting you two, and I hope your families booths do well.” she waved as she got in the car that you quickly put into reverse and drove out of the parking lot of.
“That was close.” you breathed out once you were a ways away. “Do you get noticed that often?”
She shrugged. “No. Maybe once every month or so, but other than that no one really knows who I am. Except the really big fans of my brother. The ones who dig deep I guess.”
“Interesting. Well sorry about that. I didn’t even think about-”
“What are you apologizing for? It’s not like you asked them to come over and interrogate us.” she laughed.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
“Plus, you handled it really well. I’m happy to see you aren’t dating my brother just for the stardom.”
“About that. Jensen mentioned that too. How many people have used him for that?” you asked.
“Well, you would be surprised. Even already famous people have used it against him. Danneel being one.”
“Danneel? Isn’t that his most recent ex?”
“Yeah, she had us all fooled. I mean she was sweet, and loving and everything you want for your sibling to have, but then one day… She flipped a switch. Told him she was only doing it for screen time, and the press. He found her later-” she cut herself of when she noticed she was spilling all the secrets of Jensen’s love life. “You know what? That’s not my story to tell. I’m sure you and Jensen will talk about it soon enough. I mean you’re what? Couple of months into the relationship?” she asked turning to you.
You let out a short laugh.
“Actually, about just a little under 24 hours into the relationship…”
“What?” she shouted. “But the way- I thought that- How-”
“I know. I know. Like I said before. We we were roommates first, then I brought him home for Christmas since your family was celebrating later, and then feelings were eventually shared. It took us a while, but we finally put a label to it.” you chuckled under your breath.
“Well, you could’ve fooled me. By the way he looked at you, I wouldn’t have been surprise if you had been hiding your relationship for years.”
“Really?” you said turning to her shocked.
“Oh yeah. He has the look.” she said looking straight ahead at the road.
“What look?”
“Oh you know, ‘the one’. But I shouldn’t say anything. I’m just picking up context clues here and there.” she shrugged with a cheeky smile on her face.
“You’re sneaky.” you said throwing her a smirk. “I like that.”
She raised her shoulders like she didn’t know what you were talking about, and then you both broke into laughter, and talked small talk the rest of your ride home.
__
You came in laughing about something you and Mackenzie were talking about, so you didn’t notice the new people that were standing at the island with Jensen.
“You’re kidding.” you laughed, as you turned the corner with multiple bags in hand.
“Dead serious.” Mackenzie answered before looking behind you.
You followed her stare, and saw Jensen’s parents. He had showed you pictures so you knew exactly who they were.
“Oh, hi!” you smiled.
“Y/N, these are my parents Donna and Alan.” he smiled motioning to them.
“Oh my gosh. It’s so nice to meet you two.” you walked over going to shake their hands, but realizing you didn’t have any open hands to do so.
Jensen was quick though and picked up on the struggle, and rushed to your side.
“Here. Let me get those.” he smiled taking them with ease and going to relocate them.
“Thanks Jay.” you smiled before turning back to his parents. “Sorry about that. I’m Y/N.” you said offering your hand once again. Jensen’s dad taking it first and giving you a sturdy handshake which you reciprocated.
“Nice to meet you Y/N. Jensen’s been telling us all about you since we got here.” he said with a friendly smile which eased your nerves a little.
“All good things I hope.”
“All good things.” he chuckled. Jensen definitely got his looks from his father. They had the same structure and everything. Of course his dad just more aged.
You moved over to his mom, and she already had this huge smile from ear to ear on.
“Hi Donna, it’s nice to finally meet you.” you greeted.
“The pleasures all mine darling. Jensen can’t seem to stop talking about you, and I must say you are even more beautiful than he’s said.”
“Mom-” Jensen said joining back with you guys and standing close to you embarrassed.
“Thank you so much. Truly you’re too kind.” you said hugging Jensen from the side and placing a hand on his chest to ease his embarrassment.
“So lunch?” Mackenzie interjected coming around the two of you. “Mom wanna help make some pasta? Y/N and I went to the farmers market to get some fresh ingredients.”
“Yeah, for sure! Whatcha got to make?” she asked.
“While you guys figure that all out, I’m going to pull Jensen away for a second.” Alan said putting a hand on his son’s shoulder. “We’ll be back in a second.” he said sending you a reassuring smile.
As they walked out Jensen shot you a thumbs up and a wink. You were nervous, but his family had a calming presence, so you weren’t as scared as you normally would be. You turned back to the women in the room and patted your legs.
“Well I wasn’t sure what you guys would want, so I just kinda stocked up on a lot of things. I can work on the vegetables and sides, if you want to do the main course.” You said going to the grocery bags. “Mackenzie said you make a mean chicken pesto pasta.”
“She’s not wrong there.” Donna smiled going over to the bags to help unload. “You sure you don’t want any help with the sides?”
“No, no! I got that. I feel bad already asking you to make the pasta. Mackenzie just insisted that you make it since it’s supposedly taste like heaven.” you chuckled seeing Mackenzie grin as she ducked her head away. “I don’t want to ask you to do it all. You are the guest after all.”
“Of course Mackenzie asked you to buy stuff for this meal.” Donna smiled while rolling her eyes. “It’s her favorite, and she only eats it when I make it.” she said nudging your shoulder playfully as she got the ingredients out. “Besides, usually when we come here we cook anyways. It’s no biggie.”
“Well then, let me join in on the tradition. I would love to help where I can.” you smiled taking out some pots and pans before turning to Donna with a friendly grin.
“I would love that sweetheart.” she grinned back. “Mackenzie you’re in charge of boiling the pasta.”
__
“What’s up dad?” Jensen asked his father as they got situated on the back porch on the nice sunny day.
“So listen son. I was just wanting to check in with you.” he smiled.
“If this is about-”
“It’s not. I’m just wanting to see how this is going.”
Jensen gave his father a look. One saying he didn’t really want to get into the whole Danneel thing.
“Dad it’s not like that-”
“Call it a father looking out for his son.”  Alan said putting his hands up in surrender before looking back at his son. “You didn’t think it was like that with Danneel and look what happened there. She broke your heart, and you were a mess.”
“I know, but trust me when I say this. Y/N is not like that. She doesn’t care about the fame aspect of this relationship.” Jensen said slumping onto the banister on the steps. “She-she’s different. I know it.”
“What makes you think that?” Jensen shot him another look. “I’m just trying to get the facts. Don’t hate me for asking.”
Jensen sighed as he looked out onto the yard.
“Where to begin?” he said with a soft smile as he thought about you. “For one, she’s known Jared and Gen for longer than me almost, and she has always been down to earth with them. Never once tried to jump in the spotlight with them. Only in it for the friendship.”
“Ok. Good start.”
“Then she was even hesitant to move in with me. Most girls would jump at the opportunity for exactly the reasons you’re worried about, but she actually took almost a week just to decide on it. The deciding factor being she didn’t want to live off of Gen and Jared anymore. Hell, she was even looking at apartments while living here so that she wouldn’t be in ‘my way’ as he put it.” he chuckled lightly.
“Hmm mmm.” Alan said thinking it out, but Jensen kept going.
“Then when she invited me to her family’s place, she-she-” he stopped and smiled thinking back to it. “The first things she said to her family was, ‘He is a normal man. Who just wants to have a normal time. Treat him like the human being he is.’” he started playing with his hands as he smiled thinking about you. His father catching on. “She was constantly putting her family in check, and making sure that I was just like them. Not famous, not any different from them. It was humbling. It was nice for a change.”
“I see.” Alan said bringing his son’s attention back from the dream land he had escaped to. “So you love her?”
That definitely made Jensen snap his head to his father.
“L-Love?”
“Yeah, love. It’s not that hard of a word.”
“I wouldn’t say love just yet-”
“You don’t have to say it. You’re showing it.” Alan smirked. Jensen just gave him confused eyes. “Listen, at first when you mentioned her I immediately went into defense mode, and was ready to think of all the worst possible outcomes. But… After seeing you talk about her, and look at her.” a small grin pulled at Jensen’s lip. “This isn’t like other girls Jensen. This one seems different.”
“Thanks dad.”
“Don’t thank me. Thank whatever person brought her into your life. Gen I’m assuming?” he said standing from their spots and Jensen following.
“By complete accident.”
“Well accidents can be a miracle in disguise.” he said patting his son’s back before pointing to the house. “Wanna see what they decided on cooking? I think I already smell something good.”
“Sure. Y/N’s a great cook too, so I wouldn’t be surprised.”
“Add it to the list of reasons I already like her.” Alan smiled as they walked back in.
When they came in, you three girls were laughing all together over something the boys didn’t know, but apparently it was hilarious the way you were leaning on the counter for support.
It was like time froze. You were smiling so big, and it was like a glow was surrounding you. The laughter that was coming out of your mouth was angelic sounds sent straight from heaven from Castiel himself. The way your hair had fallen just a bit more from the long day so far was capturing your natural beauty just right with how the light was filtering into the room.
You slowed your laughing when you noticed Jensen walk in the room, and he watched as your smile turned to a soft one when you looked to him. It showed you were content, confident, and happy where you were. All the nerves that were there the night before weren’t showing at all now. You were breathtaking while in your element. Everything about you was.
Maybe this was love. And if it was, he never wanted the feeling to leave.

Hhhhhhhh idk 55 & 77? Acting attorney? i eat your stories w/ my eyes friendo
AW! That’s so sweet, thanks! I’m glad you like my stuff! Sorry this took so long, I really struggled with it, and this week got busier than I anticipated. This…could be considered an installment in my Married!Acting Attorney AU, but before they actually become a couple, I suppose.
55.  “I’m not going anywhere.”
77.  “We’re meant for each other.”
Oo00oO
Sometimes Mark will look at his law student friend andwonder.
Wonder if he’s imagining the way they look at him when theythink he’s not paying attention, if they are too far out of his league, if this…stirring is really all that differentfrom all his past temporary infatuations.
But he knows the answer to that last one: this feeling is very different from whatever he felt for Mackenzie the buxom cheerleader in high school.
He’s never been willing to actually study with anyone else before.
Speaking of studying…
Mark stares down at his most recent grade report with utterdisappointment. He is this close tofailing, and…
Honestly, he’s now wondering if college just isn’t for him. Shouldhe just leave the University behind and pursue his acting career in full, especially with his grades in such a dismal state?
When he says as much to Damien and the law student whilethey’re all relaxing at Amy’s Planet, his comment is received with mixedresults.
Damien nods in sympathy. But the law student has grownstill.
“…I put that forward so I could have some feedback.”
“Oh!” Damien clears his throat. “Well…I don’t know, Mark. It’sultimately your decision.”
“Gee, that’s helpful, thanks,” Mark grumbles. He switcheshis attention to the law student. “What about you?”
“Uuuuuummm…”
Why do they look like a deer caught in headlights?
They grab their still-steaming mug of coffee and down itlike water, choking a minute later at the heat. Mark and Damien hurry to offernapkins for any accidental dribble.
After a few more coughs, they finally choke out, “I thinkyou should do whatever you think is best. Oh, look at the time!” They glance attheir wrist for half of a second. “I need to get to work. Bye!”
Mark and Damien stare after the law student long after theyrush out the door.
“They don’t have a watch,” Mark eventually says.
“I know that,”Damien agrees with a groan.
“So what was that all about?”
Damien sighs. “I would hazard to guess that they don’t likethe idea of you dropping out because that would mean they won’t get to see youas often.”
Mark’s brow furrows. “That’s ridiculous. I’d still come tosee them on campus.”
“They…may not think that.”
“What? Why wouldn’t they?”
“They’re under the impression that any day now you’ll decidethey aren’t worth your time.”
The idea is utterly baffling to Mark. How could hisdearest friend ever believe he would abandon them?
But then he remembers their past experiences at home with a certain intolerant family member, their “off-handed”comments about Mark’s wealth…
“…I’ll need to give this more thought.”
Oo00oO
It was ridiculous, sure, to base so much of his decision offof how his friend would feel.
Still, Mark finds himself taking it into account. He’ssurprised by how much the idea of disappointing his friend affects him.
He finds them at home the next day, after their classesfinish up for the afternoon. They’re in the kitchen making tea, and offer tomake him a cup to. He accepts.
When he brings up the subject again, they are far more composed.
“Do you want my honest opinion or my blindly supportiveopinion?”
“Honest, please.”
“I think you’re giving up way too easily.”
Mark blinks. He expected nothing less from them, but to haveit phrased like that?
“Care to elaborate?”
“Mark, know that I say this with love.” They start steepingtheir tea. “You’re an adequate student on your best day—”
“Gee, thanks.
“—which is unfortunate, because you’re one of the smartestpeople I know.”
Mark couldn’t have been more surprised if a pig suddenlycrashed through the window. This is the same person who witnessed him eat two habanero peppers in a row with no milk in the refrigerator.
“I—really?”
“Yes. You may not always pay attention, but you retaininformation and I honestly think if you just…listened a little more, you wouldpass without a problem.” They roll their eyes. “I realize making decent grades goesagainst the rich playboy front you like to put up, but no one has to know thenumbers your getting on your tests.”
Mark crosses his arms, his tea abandoned on the counter. “…Flatteredas I am that you think I’m one of the smartest people I know—and believe me, Iwon’t be letting you forget that anytime soon—is that the only reason you think I should stay in school?”
They stop steeping, gaze dropping to the swirling water intheir cup. A sigh, and then, “Okay, fine. Maybe I don’t want you to go. Butthis isn’t about me. Like Damien said the other day, this is your decision inthe end.”
I don’t want you togo.
Mark smiles. He hadn’t realized until now, but…maybe thatwas all he needed to hear.
“No worries then.” He tucks his fingers under their chin andlifted until they met his eyes. “I’m not going anywhere.”
The relief in their eyes is palpable, but he still sees ahint of insecurity. “You sure?”
“Absolutely. I’d hate to lose my status as one of thesmartest and most handsome people you know.”
They groan and pull away from his grasp. “I said nothingabout you being handsome.”
“I read the subtext.”
“Do you even know what ‘subtext’ means?”
“…shut up.”
Oo00oO
“So you’re not dropping out?”
It’s later in the week, and Mark and Damien are waiting at the campus fountain for thelaw student to arrive. Mark is surprised at the renewed energy coursing throughhim.
“Nope! Decided I should stick it out for a little longer, atleast.”
Damien’s eyebrow lifts. “And what brought about this suddenchange of heart?”
“Let’s just say…I have a little more faith in myself than Idid a few days ago.”
“And this wouldn’t have anything to do with your littlecrush on our law student friend?”
“What would you say if it did?”
Damien shrugs. “Nothing. It’s none of my business why youmake your choice.”
“Thanks.”
“I would just ask…well, are you sure?”
Mark looks towards the University entrance gates, where thelaw student is heading their way. Their mismatched brightly colored clothes arefaded and rumpled and their eyes are frantically wide, but still Mark smiles atthe flutter in his chest.
“I’m sure. Besides…” he turns back to Damien and nods hishead in the direction of the still rushing law student, “it’ll all work out.”
“What makes you say that?”
“We’re meant for each other. I can feel it.”
And now he had the nerve to try to make it happen.

Christmas Stockings
A/N; This is for Steph’s Winter with Dean/Jensen Challenge, my first ever challenge. I think I failed the 1,000 word limit tho, sorry Steph I just kept one with ideas. I hope you like it, it’s my very first one ever. (Bites nails) thank you @secretlyfurrydragon for beta’ing this for me, all other mistakes are my own.  My mom passed away in 1998 with Multiple Myloma Cancer that part in the story is true, and for me. I stayed in my room for two weeks before I faced the world again, she was my best friend and we done everything together as if we were sisters. She protected me from my abusive father until the day he decided to turn on her, I took matters into my own hands. the van con package the reader gets, its only a dream that i wish to go. only my mothers cancer is truth in this. but here I said it was four years ago, but in reality it was 20 years ago this week on Thanksgiving that I lost her. I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving. #winterwithdeanchallenge (Thank you Steph for letting me participate)
Warnings: Angst, Fluff, scared reader, pregnancy news, mom’s memories Mentions of Cancer
Tumblr media
Here you are sitting in the living room with your husband’s family on Christmas day, you had some news to tell them but at the same time you were scared out of your wits. Your left leg was bouncing like crazy, and your palms were sweaty. Your heart was racing, and you bit your bottom lip so hard you knew it would be bruised tomorrow. You were scared to tell them, because you haven’t even told Jensen, so there’s no telling how he was going to react.
You decided to wait to tell them, since you’ll be together, as you would have backup just in case Jensen wasn’t happy. You knew he would be but in the back of your mind you still had your doubts. You really haven’t thought about having babies right away after only being married a year, however, things changed and now you’re pregnant.
You had been down all day, but you had your own reasons why. You lost your Mom on Thanksgiving day four years ago, and things haven’t been the same for you. She was your best friend and you done pretty much everything together. She even helped you with meeting Jensen, and that will be a day you won’t never forget. Her death took a part of your heart when she passed of cancer as you stayed in your room for days ignoring the world.
You received a package in the mail soon after and you let it sitting there for least two days before you had the forced yourself to open it, seeing it was from your Mom. Tears fell down your cheeks as your hands were shaking while opening it. You didn’t know what could be in it but you knew your Mom always had ways of surprising you. Once opened, your eyes grew so wide it was unbelieveable. She had managed to get you Gold tickets and all the photo ops imaginable to Vancouver Convention with Jensen and Jared. She had arranged you to also spend a day on set.
And that’s how you met and fell in love with Jensen Ackles who is now your husband. You loved and missed your Mom so much, that a day doesn’t go by you wish you could see her for five more minutes. She was the first to know about you being pregnant as you went to her gravesite to tell her. You miss her so much it hurts every day, but you know she is no longer in pain and you’re glad she’s not. Your thankful for everything she has done for you, even from above.
You remember the day you found out, it was November. It was Thanksgiving day actually, you were at the Ackles home in Texas and certain smells you normally loved, made you nauseous. Jensen’s Mom Donna came over to you when she found you leaning up against the wall.
“You ok Y/N?” she placed her hand on your shoulder for comfort.
“Yes, thank you. Just a little tired, we have been working a lot lately. Plus the jet lag and time zone changes.” You assured her that had to be it, and she left it at that. But she kept her eye on you.
“Ok, you let me know if there is anything wrong alright?” She looked at you with that mother look that you missed so much.
“I will, thank you.” She smiled at you and went to tend the to the turkey.
You shook your head out of your thoughts after Jensen came to sit next to you and placing his arm around you. “Babe, are you ok? You look a bit nervous about something.”
You swallowed hard, “Um, no. I’m fine, just tired.” You shook your head nonchalantly.
He let you snuggle up to him while you watch the children open their presents, you felt nervous but you knew you couldn’t wait to tell them. You tried so many different ways to tell them but nothing seemed to go as planned. So you decided the next best thing, as the closer the adults got to opening their  presents, you were a nervous wreck. Jensen noticed and looked at you.
“Babe? You’re not alright, what’s wrong, please tell me?” He stood by your side.
You pursed your lips together to gather your senses and moved yourself away from Jensen long enough to get the presents you had been hiding. “I um have my own presents I need to give to you, and your Mom and Dad.” You came out with a box all equal sizes, nicely wrapped with Santa on them.
“Babe, you didn’t have to do that.” Jensen looked at you with love.
“It’s ok, I think you’re going to love this present. I hope?” You let out a deep breath you had been holding.
Donna comes over to you, “Y/N, no matter what I’m sure it’s amazing. You’re already our gift as you love our son with all your heart. That there is always a mother’s dream,” she pulls you into a hug.
You smiled knowing you made the right decision, “Ok, um I need you three, Jensen, Mom and Dad to open yours together at the same time. No peeking Dad,” you look over at Jensen’s Dad who was trying to do just that.
“What? I wasn’t doing nothing.” He tried his best to hide the guilty look on his face by looking down at the present in his lap.
“I’m watching you Dad,” as he lifted his head you winked at him.
The rest of the family members looked at you, Mackenzie had that look in her eye as she looked at you from afar. Josh watched on. Jensen opened his box to see a Christmas stocking with his name and year on it inside filled with something, and took out the items one by one. His face grew wide seeing everything in pink wondering why you were giving him baby items, needless to say he was shocked more when he saw the ultrasound.
“Um, babe?” he wanted to act confused but even through his happiness he couldn’t do it. “Does this mean what I think it means?” You could tell he was surprised.
You nod your head as you looked at him and his parents who had also opened theirs with the same reaction. “Oh my,Y/N!!” Donna yelled with excitement as she ran to hug you followed by Alan. “Do you realize how happy we are to hear this sweetheart?” Donna told you with tears in her eyes.
You swallowed so thankful that they were happy to hear this, “Thank you, I was so scared.” You hugged them both, and they let you go when you saw your husband.
“Jensen?” You look over at him still staring down at the ultrasound. “Babe?” You broke free from the hugs and also from Mackenzie and Josh congratulating you, then walked over to Jensen. You stood between his legs “Jay, baby say something please, you’re scaring me.”
Before you knew it, Jensen had stood up and wrapped you in a hug kissing you everywhere with tears in his eyes. “Thank you baby, the best Christmas stocking ever.” He kisses you again, and you wrap your arms around him as he twirls you around.
“Merry Christmas Jensen,” You say as you look at him.
“Merry Christmas Y/N, I love you so much.” As he kisses you.
“I love you to Daddy.” You wrap him in your arms and you thank him for giving you the greatest gift ever.

I'm in desperate need of fluff and things outside this ridiculous shit going on in the world! Would one of or all of you amazing writers PLEASE write a fluff piece? Baby Fraser's? Baby MacKenzie's? Just something happy and not in the least bit tainted with the destruction of our actual reality. Thanks!
Murtagh on the Ridge AU
“Sorry,” Roger apologized as he shifted Jem down from his arms and hiked the empty game sack higher over his shoulder. He touched the knife at his belt and the bag with their midday meal slung over his other shoulder before nodding to himself, his mental checklist complete. “Bree just wanted to––”
“Aye,” Jamie interrupted with a raised hand. “It’s the lad’s first time on the hunt––”
Murtagh scoffed but Jamie ignored him.
“––I ken why ye’re late. Let’s no waste any more time or we’ll no be reaching home again till dark.”
“If we were goin’ a proper hunt it wouldna be an issue,” Murtagh muttered. He adored Jem in small doses but spending an entire day with the three-year-old without his mother to pass him off to when he got fussy wasn’t Murtagh’s idea of a productive way to spend the day.
“It’s how you and Da started me and Willie,” Jamie reminded Murtagh. “Or do ye no stand by yer own methods?”
“I wasna so old then as I am now. I had all the time in the world to waste on yer blatherin’ about the woods and scarin’ off the worthwhile game. Now…” he sighed as the ground began to tilt beneath their feet, the incline getting sharper and his breath coming dearer. “Now I should prefer an easier hunt––home in time for luncheon and an easy afternoon cleaning and butchering followed by a nice bit of fresh roasted meat for supper.” He practically smacked his lips at the thought.
“That being so, checking the snare line isna exactly a difficult task though it can be as tedious as waiting for a decent size stag to come along. Can yield more meat than a poor day’s hunting too, and ye ken that well,” Jamie teased.
“I wan Grandda carry me,” Jem complained already bored with walking.
“Now Jemmy,” Roger began to lecture but Murtagh interrupted.
“Jamie, carry the wee lad or we’ll ne’er catch nothing.”
Jamie beckoned for Jem to toddle over then got down on his knees and lowered his voice. “Tell me what ye see wee man.” He swept his hand and his eyes around the undergrowth. Jem’s eyes watched his grandfather intently then he got down to his knees and mimicked the movements at a much faster rate.
“Do ye see where our path lies?”
Jem screwed up his mouth and narrowed his eyes before pointing in a random direction. “Tha way.”
Jamie took the little hand and drew it a few inches to the left. “Do ye see the way through the trees there?” he asked. “Tha’s the way our line of snares is set.” Rising to his feet once more, Jamie surprised Jem by taking hold of him under the arms, swinging him up over his head, and finally settling the lad on his shoulders. Jem laughed loudly while Murtagh rolled his eyes and continued along their route, muttering under his breath. “Might be easier for ye to see it from up there,” Jamie said with a firm hold on Jem’s feet, keeping him safely in place.
Jem’s fingers wormed their way through Jamie’s hair clutching large clumps and treating them like reins. “Go, Grandda,” he instructed, pulling hard and making Jamie cry out. Murtagh laughed and Roger scolded.
“Go easy on him, Jemmy. Grandda’ll no let ye ride there again if ye pull his hair out at the roots.”
“What sorts of game to ye think we’ll find in our snares?” Jamie asked. They were making better time to the first trap and despite his head start, Jamie and Jem soon passed Murtagh on their way.
“A stag!” Jem exclaimed. “Like a one ye caught when it was before it rained that time.”
“Well, I caught that one wi’ a bullet from my gun, no a snare,” Jamie explained. “A stag would have little trouble getting free of a wee snare bein’ so big. What sorts of stews and pies do yer mam and gran usually make when I’ve come back from the snare run?”
Jem draped himself over Jamie’s head trying to peer down into his grandfather’s face. Jamie had to stop walking to look up at him, laughing. “Rabbit an’ squirrel an’ peasant an’––”
“Aye,” Roger cut him off, chuckling. “And those are the sorts of animals we’re like to catch today.”
“If we’re lucky,” Murtagh muttered. “Now hush. We’re comin’ up on the first trap and ye dinna want to make matters worse if ye’ve got a scared or injured animal tha’s got nothin’ to lose.”
“Why?” Jem whispered loudly in Jamie’s ear.
“Just because a creature’s caught, doesna mean he’ll no fight ye,” Jamie whispered back. “When ye play wi’ Germain and the lasses and one of ‘em catches ye, do ye no try to get away again and keep playing?”
“Isa animal gonna bite ye like Joanie bit Germain when he pulled her hair?”
“It’ll probably try,” Roger informed Jem.
Murtagh was inching closer to where the snare had been set, a stick in his hand pushing back some of the surrounding brush to see if he could find it. He finally looked up shaking his head.
“Tripped it but didna catch the wee fiend,” he told them as Jamie set Jem down and they got closer.
“Do ye ken what we do now?” Jamie asked Jem.
“Go the next one?”
“First, we need to set this one again. Now, I’m going to take it slow so ye can watch but ye’re no to touch. When we get back to the house we’ll see if yer grannie can spare some of her string for ye to practice yer knots with so next time ye can help set one yerself.” Jamie’s hands moved with practiced ease even as he tried to go slow.
Roger clapped Jamie on the shoulder before joining Murtagh and offering him a bit of cheese from the pack he carried. When the snare was just about finished, Murtagh and Roger started off ahead of Jamie and Jem.
“Jemmy, what say we see if we can track the way they go?” Jamie suggested.
“But they goin’ tha way,” he pointed.
“Aye, but we’re no goin’ to look at them,” he remarked taking his hand and using it to direct the lad’s head to the ground. “Look there––do ye see that? See the shape there? Who do ye think left that?”
“Da! There’s nother one,” he exclaimed following the footprints Roger had left in the soft loamy forest floor.
“And here––see how this is broken here? Tha’s Murtagh’s doing. He’s doin’ it to mark the way we come through so we can find our way back easily if somethin’ happens.”
Roger and Murtagh had stopped up ahead suggesting that this second snare had succeeded in catching something.
Jamie held a finger to his lips and Jem covered his mouth to suppress a laugh. They crept up on Murtagh and Roger but Jem’s giggling gave them away. Roger pretended to be surprised but Murtagh just frowned at Jamie then went back to staring at the creature rustling behind a huckleberry bush. It hadn’t given up trying to free itself so it had probably be caught recently. They saw flashes of black fur but couldn’t make out what it was.
“Seems bigger’n a hare,” Murtagh commented, his arms crossed over his chest. “Bit of fight in it too.”
“He’s stuck,” Jem observed sadly.
Jamie took up a long stick to try and poke at the huckleberry bush and get a better look at the creature they’d caught. “We need to take care. What’s the one Claire said ye should be wary of when it’s out in the day?”
“The one wears a mask,” Murtagh nodded.
“Raccoon,” Roger confirmed. “Could be one of them.”
“I’ma let him go,” Jem declared rushing towards the bush.
“No!” the three adults hollered as Jem struggled to push the branches of the bush out of his way and they got a better view of the squat black and white body of the creature who suddenly felt threatened.
“You guys are back earlier than––Mother of God, what’s that smell?” Brianna called as she pulled her arm from the laundry tub and buried her nose in the crook of her wet elbow.
“I don’t think we need to ask you what you caught,” Claire remarked, blinking away tears as the smell made her eyes water. “The real question is how many of you did it get?”
“Jem bore the brunt of it, I’m afraid,” Roger said apologetically. Jem was curled up against his chest, his clothes and hair still wet from an attempt to wash the smell away in the river. “We all tried a wash but I dinna think it’s done any good.”
“There’s not much that does help, I’m afraid.” Claire approached Jamie warily, her nose wrinkling as she got closer. “You’re sure Jem got the worst of it?”
“I was closest to him and tried to get him away,” Jamie explained.
Claire moved on to Murtagh. “You’re not too bad.”
“Jamie makes a fine barricade to hide behind,” he responded in much better spirits than the others now that they were finally home. “Is there naught ye can do for the stink on the wee lad?”
Jem had clearly cried enough to thoroughly exhaust himself yet still looked close to tears. Brianna inched closer and Jem opened his arms, eager to be taken and comforted by his mother.
“Bonjour Monsieur Le Pew,” Brianna greeted him as she took him from Roger and cradled him against her chest. With Jem’s face safely nuzzled against her neck, she started making faces at Roger, wrinkling her nose and trying to breathe through her mouth before mouthing to her mother, I can taste it, ugh.
“Monsieur Le Pew?” Jamie asked Claire quietly.
“I’ll explain later,” she whispered back.
“Didn’t they say that when a dog gets sprayed by a skunk you’re supposed to bathe them in tomato juice?” There was a hopeful note in her voice as her eyes slid from Claire to her vegetable garden by the side of the house.
“It’s an old wives tale that we’re not going to bother with,” Claire put her foot down. “We’re not wasting the tomatoes. All it does is mask the odor for a while but there’s no getting rid of it I’m afraid. Only time will help with that.”
“Time and a good airing out,” Jamie amended reaching over to take Jem from his mother’s arms. “Well, Jemmy, I think we’re goin’ to be sleeping outside tonight. Dinna want to be bringing the skunk smell indoors do we.”
“But whatta ‘bout the animals?” he asked warily.
“They’ll no want to get too close wi’ us smellin’ like we do. Yer da and I’ll show ye how to make a proper camp and sleep under yer plaid and the stars.”
“And if it’s all right wi’ you, Claire, I’ll sleep in my proper bed tonight,” Murtagh made his appeal.
Claire sniffed at him again and frowned. “You’ll have to stay in your room and keep the window open.”
