Hy, i always love your colour things and i was watching young royals s2 and i noticed some colours there too like orange and purple was constantly there...so you have any idea about it...
Sorry @alecnamjooing, I just want to make sure I understand the question you're asking is if I have any ideas about color-coded boys in love in a specific piece of queer media?
Ummmm....yeah, I might say that I have a few thoughts about Young Royals. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I would say that. Yeah. *trying to act normal*
Tumblr media
I might have an idea about our Yellow/Orange Oddity and Blue Boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know, since they ARE a Yellow/Orange Oddity and Blue Boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I might have thought about Wilhelm being a Blue Boy who is stable, loyal, sensitive, cold, and also very sad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I might have some ideas about Simon being a Yellow/Orange Oddity who is creative, energetic, optimistic, warm, and, of course, cautious. He has some Green Guy qualities as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I've thought a bit about how they wear their colors with each other all the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I might have an idea about how Wilhelm wears their colors often before realizing he loves Simon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Wilhelm is missing Simon, he wears Simon's orange. Even his scarf incorporates their colors, and Simon's hat is blue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, and the texts swap their colors, because they are in love.
Tumblr media
So why the Purple Pair? Purple is royalty, which Wilhelm is, but he has never felt like being the prince he is meant to be. No matter how much Simon is an escape from that, Wilhelm's royalty is constantly present, and Simon LOVES his royal guy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the second season begins, neither one is wearing the other's color because, well *loud sob*... and Wilhelm is rarely wearing his color at all because *louder sob*. Wilhelm's scarf is blue and red now instead of blue and orange, but he tries to make amends with Simon; however, Simon is not open to forgiving Wilhelm, so Wilhelm tries to wear Simon's color BUT takes it off and leaves it behind. *loudest sob*
Tumblr media
Wilhelm is falling deeper into a depression and after his snow globe/paper weight breaks *peep the yellow getting all over him*
Tumblr media
He has to see this guy. *peep his colors*
Tumblr media
With his therapist's help, Wilhelm starts trying again with Simon. But Simon is always reminding Wilhelm who he is and what came between them because, even though he doesn't want to be, Simon is very much still in love with his royal guy. Note that Simon's sister, Sara, is also a Purple Person (with yellow luggage! such siblings!) and subtly reminds August of his allegiance and misdeed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Wilhelm figures it out and kisses Simon wearing both of their colors.
Tumblr media
And they find their way back to each other and their colors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've also thought about how the first time Wilhelm tried to rebel in the first season wearing red casual clothes with Simon subtly reminding him of who he is in purple, his world fell apart.
Tumblr media
But this time in the second season, standing in his red uniform, he fully embraces his rebellion against tradition while looking at his guy.
Tumblr media
So, yeah, I would say I have a few ideas about the color-coded boys in love in Young Royals, but until we get that third and final season, they're just ideas and could all mean absolutely nothing. hehe *smiles manically*
It means something! The colors ALWAYS mean something. I've thought A LOT about this because how can anyone ignore the COLORS?! Wilhelm's entire family is freaking blue! We saw that when they were sitting on the couch for the interview at the very beginning! And why would Wilhelm randomly wear an orange sweater in season two when he has NEVER worn that color if he weren't trying to get back into Simon's heart?!
Yeah. Yeah. I HAVE SOME IDEAS!
Thanks for asking.

young royals rewatch
episode 6
i love this opening montage so much
right until the credits come up over wille screaming
wish we got that scream scene without the credits for edits tho
the little girl looks at simon as if she personally has seen the video
it must be so weird to see your face on a magazine cover. i wonder what the article says
he's wearing purple (in solidarity with simon)
you have nothing to apologize for wille baby
did simon go to the police tho?
love the little detail of clothes we seen on the show already laying folded up on the washing machine
is the floor of the library so clean that they can lie and sit on it? aren't there any chairs?
august just listening to the theories like the little bitch he is
I'm calling the cops if you don't leave
i love stellas clothing style so much
sara putting 1 and 2 together
rosh and ayub are back!!!
i have not seen kim ks sex tape and i don't intend to watch it
I really hope simon doesn't change schools in s2. I'm with rosh on that one
why is the sky so yellow? light pollution?
willes pajama pants from ep 2 are back
august you little shit stop spitting live lessons and spill the truth
fish scene flashback
the looney tunes shirt is back
first kiss fit
yellow tshirt, yellow shirt, yellow backpack. i know you're the center of willes universe but do you really have to look like the sun?
footsies
wille matches the blue background but simon sticks out like a sore thumb
this scene is so poweful even without a kiss
oh no i know what's coming
sara pls don't do this
she's wearing purple (in solidarity with simon)
wilhelm doesn't have everything he has nothing you piece of shit
and he will lose simon because of you too
oh doobidoo i wanna be like you u u
why does sara look kinda sad when august kisses her neck tho?
as someone who rarely sits at the dining table for dinner and watches tv during 99% of meals i relate to simon and his mom
how does felice dress fit sara so well tho?
simon you are not her father
linda you are her mother. pls act like that more often or i will have to rewoke your best mom card
the star behind simons head looks very pretty
simon saying annan and dum in this conversation makes me think of certain songs by a certain artist
sara and wilhelm both called simon fin
why do felice and maddie have their own bathroom and wille the crown prince has to share with the other guys on his floor?
the mirror shot of them on the floor
i don't think simon really believes wille will tell the truth
it's their last kiss and it breaks my heart
the sad scarf is back
why do the subtitles say how do you do??? simon says good day. that is way more formal than how do you do! simon isn't joey from friends
this car conversation is so frustratingly sad
love how many words i understand bc they sound so similar to the german word in this conversation
let wille and simon have sex in his royal bed in s2 petition
willes tie looks very yellow (simon anyone?)
why is rosh never included in eriksson family time?
poor simon
(love his sweater tho)
who put the name joakim for willes second bodyguard out there? is it canon?
i hate this scene so much
simon did the right thing even though it breaks his (and willes AND MY) heart
hemlighet
love how we see simon leaving blurry in the background
felice being the best detective
also she calls the guy she asks where willes room is edvin
why isn't there a bodyguard in front of willes room?
willes little flinch when he sees simon on the screen
yes the confrontation scene!!!
august is working out again. of course.
why didn't wille mention erik in this scene tho? something like erik told me i could trust you
edvins acting is so good in this scene. rising star award winner indeed.
this phone call hurts so much
love how him hanging up stops the background music and we are left with silence until the match strikes and the choir begins singing
wille and simon are wearing so much more hair product than they did during the whole rest of the season
god jul
the sad scarf is back again
is simon talking with sime choir kids?
falling
we are falling now
förlåt
jag älskar dig
hoppas du fan en fin jul
tack simon
running with a crown on your head
he wants to run bad so badly
city's on fire but it's beautiful
chills literal chills
i hope they continue with the 4th wall breaks in s2
i love this show
i hate this show

Paige/Henry - any (or all) season that isn't 8
going from the beginning and assuming this all happens off screen one second i have to google how old paige would be in season one. 21. meaning she's theoretically starting her 3rd year of college bc protip to all those w august babies its best to have them be the oldest of their year rather that the youngest <3 we don't know how old henry is, but idk i'd say he's probably like 3 years older that her
s1: paige is in her studious era, & has dreams of becoming a social worker, but is still interested in art. she's also into astrology and other witchy things, as we know from her friend/coworker in season 4. paige goes with all of her artsy friends to some sort of gallery/art show/party/something. henry is Also there with his best friend bc his best friend's girlfriend at the time has like some art showing there or something idk some skin in the game. but henry is like. So Out Of His Depth. really trying to stick to the walls like avoiding all the artsy fartsy folk dropping names he's never heard of until he hears one voice cut out from the rest because it's just so genuine and so unpretentious unlike everyone else here who seems to be talking out of their ass this girl no she's real. blah blah blah they have a conversation they hit it off paige reads henry's palm and we lay in some foreshadowing someone snaps a polaroid of them paige gives it to henry it's cute. and it looks like we're going to tee up a date or something where henry gets a call from work one of his parolees was just arrested for idk possession of a knife or something so henry leaves and paige is unsure of where he went. they don't get the others name, and there's this kind of feeling of i hope i'll run into you again, but it's a big city, so probably not.
s2: eclipse viewing party!! glen even made it into town for this and paige & him are in one of the more will they ish stages of the will they won't they. they're at an old high school classmate's rooftop get together and they've all made special glasses. from the roof, paige swears she sees that guy oh my god no that's that guy from the party and she wants to call out his name but she doesn't know it she wants to call out to him she's calling out to him but she has no words to say it with. later that day, she reaches into her pocket and pulls out the polaroid from season one. how did that get there (telekinetic orbing lol uwu 😛)
s3: she's started her job at social services. about halfway/ two thirds in she gets idk one of henry's parolees as like. idk something she's doing i really don't know stuff about things. henry's there. paige maybe has the polaroid pinned up in her cubicle. they meet! it's a it's you moment. they go out on a date. it's great. they go out on a second date. also a success. and a third, and a fourth. mm, but now it's kind of going really well. which is actually kind of a bad thing. as it turns out, neither of them have been in a committed relationship bc they always end up bolting. things start to fall apart. and it's bitter for both of them bc they were kind of a figment that lived in the other's head for so long that surely this had to be something but now it's kind of just collapsing and neither of them is really working to fix it are we really just gonna watch this fall apart? no!! dramatic rain love confession. we can do this!
s4: paige is a witch. ruh roh. hmm. can we do this? henry can feel her pulling away and was like woah didn't we already dedicate 3b to this are we really doing this again? but piper and phoebe are like ooh hmm human boyfriend like um. how much do u really like him? bc um. they don't really like usually like. last hella long around here. specially if they know about the craft. so now paige is torn because like she likes henry she really does but she can't have his death on her hands. but as the halliwells start to fall apart when phoebe goes full dark side paige ends up falling back into henry's arms bc he always makes her feels better feel safe feel at home. end s w the i'm a witch confession
s5: we're doing the simon marks bit bc i love henry in that episode. i forget the main plots in s5. henry probably clocks cole at least once for trying to kill paige and cole almost like barbecues him. we could also potentially go the other direction (or do both just spread over time) when cole's trying to be good him going to henry bc he's like hey you help like. fucked up people not make the same mistakes. and henry's like. sure? paige and henry move in together by the end of s5.
s6: chris is there! chris is weirdly close with henry (because well leo kinda wasn't there so hello surrogate father figure. henry, who had no father figure, is like hey what's going on). we take this season to unpack both paige and henry's relationships to their own childhoods and their families and how they were raised and how they would want to raise their family.
s7: we're skipping over the avatars bc that plot was weak tho idk could offer some interesting leo/henry bonding as henry's kinda like his brother in law. but idk we're going zankou. and paige runs magic school. henry's in his housewife era and like cooks dinner for paige who you know like works herself to death piper henry bonding over cooking henry does almost everything like kinda wrong because he's self taught but the end results are always good. henry also like reads books from magic school to you know better learn things like astrology or spellwriting to best support paige. paige realizes how much henry means to her and how much she means to him. paige proposes. henry says yes <3

Furuba Thought Post - S2 E12 SPOILERS!
Hey all! This thought post came out later than usual this week, and next week’s likely will too, since I start Summer Classes tomorrow for the juku I work at. Since I work at a Japanese juku in the States, the summer months (end of June, July, and August) are super busy for my juku (since the kids don’t have regular classes). The prep work has been keeping me busy lately as well (which is why I have a huge backup of likes that I need to get around to reblogging - whoops!). But, I wanted to get a something up this week!
I love both Hatori and Mayuko as individual characters, but the relationship is one that I’ve always been largely indifferent about. I thought maybe their moments being animated might make me less indifferent to them, and that did happen a bit, but I’m not a really bigger shipper of the two of them. That being said, I do like and appreciate their relationship, I just feel like it never gets developed enough for me to really latch onto it. Here we only see the beginnings of it really, and mostly just from Mayuko’s POV, but then after this we really don’t get much. The reboot still might rectify this a bit, but it might not either.
I do have to say though, that even though I have some issues with some of the sub translations in this episode sounding awkward, I think the translation did a better job of capturing the "blossoming" aspect of Mayu and Hatori's relationship. The fact that it is a very new relationship. I also think that the episode and translation did a good job of showing how Mayu's affection for Hatori grew over the time she spent, rather than feeling like another case of love at first sight like it did in the manga.
Regardless of all that though, there is a lot of really great stuff that gets touched on in this episode. As someone who is in her 30s and a teacher, I really feel like I can relate to Mayuko. Though, thankfully, neither of my parents push the whole “get married, have kids, settle down” stuff on me. Though, that could also be because I’m the youngest of my siblings. But when Mayuko was like, “Teachers are still pretty busy in the summer too!” I felt that, lol.
Really in this post I’m just going to focus on a few key moments and phrases that really stuck out to me (and speaking of phrases...the translation...this episode didn’t have any glaring mistranslations from what I could see, but there was a LOT of really awkward wording and phrasing). Moving along from that complaint though and on to the actual content:
- As a general overall statement on this episode - all of the humor hit perfectly and the dramatic/sad moments either really emotionally got to me and/or made me cry. So all of those moments and scenes are A++. Also, in general, the animators really went 120% with making sure everyone looked beautiful and hot this episode! (Outside of the old maid, bleh!) Nice!
- Shigure’s line of “Why don’t you just steal him away?” really speaks volumes about his character. Not in the sense that Shigure would actually do that ("steal" someone away, that is), but the fact that his first thought is to do something underhanded just...yeah. And, I just...Shitgure making a return! That moment really stands out in an episode like this one, where Shigure is (by and large) helping out his friend. But yeah, that line really does make me think about all the drama surrounding him and Akito and Kureno, and this is just a really great, subtle setup to all of that.
- Speaking of subtle, I really do love how Furuba relies a lot on character body language. We don’t see enough of that in anime in general, tbh. The scene with Mayuko watching Hatori and Kana from the window and then trying to replicate that action of intimacy (reaching out and touching Shigure’s arm), but then getting nothing back in response (and the hesitant way she did it) was excellent. It highlighted how closed off (emotionally) she still was, how much of a wall existed between her and Shigure, and how empty their relationship really was.
- Mayuko and Shigure’s relationship is really realistic, especially for the age group they were at the time. Early to mid 20s is really when you see people get into relationships “just because.” Those periods are very transitional and uncertain, and it is a easy period in time to feel lost in, so engaging in relationships because of loneliness or boredom is really fitting. Though, Shigure also likely did it to stir things up and such too.
- This is a small thing, but I adore that Mayu calls Ayame “Aya-kun.” He’s the only one of the Mabudachi Trio that she does this with, and it shows how close they are and how they seem to just click as friends. It’s so odd, because when you first think about it, it seems odd that Mayuko would befriend Ayame, but then when you think about how she can see straight through Shigure’s BS, it makes more sense. Ayame may be a bit self-focused, but he is also extremely honest. He’ll say what he thinks and often has good intentions that are just executed horribly. So I think Mayuko appreciates the honesty.
Also, Ayame is likely well read too, but while Shigure would probably be one of those a-holes that you see on the internet playing “devil’s advocate,” Ayame would likely just enthusiastically discuss literature and stuff with Mayuko. So I could see her connecting with him on that.
- The scene with the old maid and the child crying...This is actually an issue in Japan that's come up a number of times before in the news. Situations like the elderly complaining about nursery schools/day cares and such being "too loud." Japan Times has a good article on this, but Tumblr gets weird with links, so just look up "nursery school too loud Japan" in Google and you'll be able to find them. I definitely remember reading about some other examples of this too a few years ago.
In Japan there is an expectation that children will be loud, since they are still learning the ins and outs of society, but this whole idea, and what we see with the maid, kinda goes against this. Though the child that was shown in the episode is on the older side, getting to a point where loud, outbursts would be more frowned upon. Also, Japan has more elderly than young people nowadays, and that was even true back when Furuba was first published/coming out, so I feel it is likely connected to all of that as well.
- Anyway, I feel I personally relate better to the idea of suppressing your emotions now that I'm older. I just get it more. Though, I've always been a bit more of a guarded person, the older you are, the more you try to respond to something with raw or pure emotions, the more you are looked down upon. Though we know that Mayuko cried for Hatori, I feel it only started out that way. At first she was crying for him, but then I think she started crying for Kana, and herself, and that awful, failed relationship with Shigure - and just everything.
Takaya-sensei making Mayuko a teacher is also a pretty interesting job choice, since teachers in Japan are expected to act appropriately, to be remodels and do exhibit "do as I do" type of behavior (rather than "do as I say, not as I do" behavior). This was something that they drilled into us during my AET training in Japan. It's why teachers can get into serious trouble if they are caught with a side job, especially one that is "shady" in any way, shape, or form (like simply being a bartender). So, Mayuko has a profession that kind of reinforces suppression, model behavior, restricting oneself, self discipline, and etc.
- Then we have Hatori, who has a similar situation with his profession. He's a doctor. Being a doctor requires being very self controlled over your emotions and feelings. The fact that he lost both of his parents when he was still kinda young and that he holds a lot of weight and responsibility on his shoulders because of the memory suppression technique and how he has had to use it over the years...and he likely had to grow up really fast. It makes you wonder if Hatori was ever really allowed to just openly and unabashedly cry, even as a kid.
- Of course, lastly, we have Hatori's clothes. He switches out of the restrictive, suit and tie combo and ends the episode in a loose white dress shirt that has the top buttons undone. This symbolizes Hatori's opening up to himself, his feelings, and to Mayuko. :)
There were a lot of really great shots in this episode. The way they transitioned from Kana being happy, to her being so broken up inside over what happened to Hatori, to her being happy post-memory suppression was very nicely done. And some of the imagery that they used for Shigure's comedic moments were excellent, haha.

Rewatching Once Upon A Time. I only watched if for the first time last year but got really into it. I knew it was flawed and have seen a lot of comments on it. On the rewatch I would say
S1 - Excellent
S2 - pretty good
S3 - part 1 - pretty good.
S3 - Part 2 - pretty rubbish - really? Flying monkeys and Zelena. Neal - I want to see my family so I’m going to do something really stupid that gets me killed but everyone will call me a hero. Better off being a coward than a hero if people are that idiotic. Also, why did Neal and August go back to the EF? They weren’t in the curse. OK I’m beginning to see how many plot holes this series has now.
S4 - part 1 - dull, dull, dull and inconsistent - Frozen story dull and oh right Ingrid brought up Emma. Really? And a Sorceres hat to remove the dark one reliance on the dagger? This is all getting a bit silly now. Rumplestiltskin now a pantomime villain after world domination even when he never did that in the Enchanted Forest. I know he’s probably got PTSD but seriously....
S4 - part 2 - much better than I remembered. Queens of Darkness start off very good. Also more logic to villains bad deeds than in part 1. I love Cruella De Ville.
Just got to S5 - part 1 - complete tosh - this is beginning to get preposterous and annoy me now.
I remember thinking S5 part 2 was awful when I first watched it so not looking forward to that.
S6 - part 1 - pretty rubbish - lots of inconsistent behaviour from main characters - I remember being ballistic at the uncharecteristic behaviour of Rumpelstiltskin and abusive behaviour pretty much his defining characteristic is that he doesn’t care about anyone bet Belle and Baelfire but both of them could literally stomp all over him and he would take it without going back, I know he feels rejected but really - also should be callled the land of really dull stories
S6 - part 2 much better not a bad ending
S7 - I’m not going to rewatch that. Struggled on the first time and the last episode connecting all the realms was just stupid.
My favourite characters are Rumpelstiltskin and Belle but I like lots of the characters from the first 2 seasons. Hook starts off really well but as he gets ‘good’ he starts to look more seedy just as Emma gets more frumpy.

Thank you!!!!
OUAT
Favorite character: Emma & Alice
Least Favorite character: Gothel
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): CS, curious archer, rumbelle, snowing, outlaw and dragon queen (im cheating lol)
Character I find most attractive: Regina
Character I would marry: Emma or Belle
Character I would be best friends with: also belle lol but also charming
a random thought: alice and robin had like an actual ouat style royal wedding, everyone showed up and it was just so big and they looked super regal and gah i have a lot of opinions on that
An unpopular opinion: i think jefferson had a pretty complete story??? the last time we see him he reunited with his kid so i dont feel like his story needed more closure as compared to other characters
My Canon OTP: CS or curious archer (their both tied for me lol)
My Non-canon OTP: Dragon queen
Most Badass Character: Alice “the guardian” jones or Emma “product of true love” swan
Most Epic Villain: pan or zelena (i like her as a regular character but she was a lit villian)
Pairing I am not a fan of: lolllll sw@nfire but also $q but i really tried to like them for a long time but long story short both ships……not it lmao
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): august tbh, he existed in the first season as a friend of emmas and someone who was young and could not live up to his dads expectations and then they retconned the shit out of him and he helped send her to jail at 16/17 and he so rarely gets mentioned again, hes a boy and then a man but also the “one real friend” emma had??? even tho he was barely a friend to her lol, i really did like him and the actor who played him was amazing and ya…..wasted potential
Favourite Friendship: huh i ship like all my fav friendships lol but frozen swan or captain charming
Character I most identify with: ALICE!!! or killian (mainly the original version)
Character I wish I could be: idk charming??? he has a great wife and then i could protect emma with my life idk i think being him would be cool
CS
When I started shipping them: ive been watching the show live since like mid season 2 but i was hella dumb when i watched 2x06 and im the only cs shipper who didnt see how obvious the set up was lol but ngl i just……hated ne@l and it lead me into the anti tag where i read so many meta posts about how killian was the “anti” ne@l and how he would be good for her and i just remember i was like “well anything’s better than her ending up with him” but when 2x22 aired and hook turned his ship around for her i was like oh shit oh shit
My thoughts: they’re everything???? true love lost souls who find home in each other (which is the BEST kind of trope) excellence. they were both so BROKEN when we met them and when they met??? and they helped HEAL each other and learn to love again??? their so powerful and i adored them with my whole heart; no show ever did with another ship what this show did with them
What makes me happy about them: thinking about 2x06 and how closed off they were and then they found each other and got a FAMILY and someone who loved them unconditionally and they both DESERVE it
What makes me sad about them: huhhhh i just miss them. i do wish jen stayed for s6 but im not like angry or resentful
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: ooffff uhm??? i dont wanna say anything too specific fanfic writers are AMAZING. but ive always been more on the swan believer deserves better side which is really just that idk ive read fics where sometimes emma came off as a bad mom so killian could be the “hero” dad and it always feels hella heteronormative (it exists with a LOT of m/f mom/dad fics *cough cough* bellarke) and it bugs me a lot it always comes across as icky
Things I look for in fanfic: i absolutely adored cs neighbours fics idk why??? it fits them so well but also enchanted forest aus are so good especially bc given canon we have so many of those aus and them as kids is really great: it takes away a lot of their individual pain so its always a fun au
My wishlist: we were so spoiled so im not gonna like beg for more but let me just say; in 4x12 when she was putting his heart back the “ive never done this before” “held my heart; believe me you have for much longer” lines SHOULD NOT have been cut
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: uhm killian with milah and emma with elsa
My happily ever after for them: i have different ideas of their jobs but pretty much got everything i wanted for them and more??? they have a home and two kid(s) as well as amazing friends/family and theyre living their happy beginning as they SHOULD
Ruby Lucas
How I feel about this character: a BISEXUAL legend; thank you for ur service we all thank you. shes amazing and we deserved to see her again for the final season and her storyline in season 2 was so important to me??? her episode where she was all “i choose me” to her mom and she realized she wasnt the monster was all so good i loved her
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: SHES SO SHIPPABBLE lol; snow, belle, charming ( as like an ot3 with snow), mulan, dorothy
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: well her and snow were never romantic so ya snow??? their scenes were probs some of my fav in like the entire show ngl but also granny
My unpopular opinion about this character: huh some people shipped her with victor and i never really saw it??? they were insanely popular in s2 and they had like a nice scene together but i just didnt feel much at all. also red snow >>>> red beauty (but l like them as well)
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: she STUCK AROUND!!!! and met more disney princesses
Favorite friendship for this character: maybe her and emma??? i could never get into them as a ship either just cause i remember this one fic where she told emma that snowing were gonna make her godmother and i realized how true that probably was but i like them as friends and i wish we got more
My crossover ship: idkkk uhm (i wish she got to meet elsa and killian tho)  and they could lead emma defence squad but maybe rebbekah from tvd i feel like theyd be bisexual queenns together lol

Peter Zumthor and Mari Lending - A Feeling of History
Tumblr media
Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum in Sauda - Peter Zumthor
As a child I rarely took the tube. But when I did, I found it a hostile environment; the artificial light, or better said the lack of natural light, the unrealistic fear of falling on the train tracks, the lack of anything to do while waiting. As I grew up I had to start taking the metro in Bucharest. I remember going to drawing lessons from school, and in winter, when I was coming back, it was right at that time of day when the light is dimming. 5 minute wait, 12 minute ride, 4 stations, and when I’m out its pitch dark. I find it the closest mean of transport to teleportation.
Imagine yourself in a city where you’ve never been before in an underground station. Remove from your mental image the station sign, the clock (including the line monitor) and the posters. Now you find yourself in any station of that city, at any time of the day, at any time of the year, in any year since the station was build; it’s a feeling of atemporality and a-spatiality. Most underground stations are quite sterile spaces, they are utility constructions that are guided by the laws of efficiency. The materials used are durable and don’t show signs of weathering - glazed tiles, metal or plastic seats, rubbery paint; they are materials that don’t absorb any memories, except of their initial moment(from station to station they vary slightly in fashion according to the time they were built).
Berlin underground stations closely respects this morphology (I will be referring as underground stations to both U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations that are in the underground). Built at the beginning of the 20th century, with a rapid growth up until the Second World War, and further, after the separation of the city, Berlin underground system(and overground) was and is an ever changing fingerprint of the city. From the lines’ web to the specific sign and lettering it is a system, or better said the circulation of the city’s body particular for Berlin and only for Berlin. Even though it respects the guidelines on which a metro is built, it can only tell the story of Berlin. One distinctive aspect to be noted about German underground stations is that you don’t have any form of physical barriers when accessing the platform; in this way I would argue that the stations become extensions of the streets and the ‘no questions asked’ public space. It acts primarily as part of the transport scheme, but auxiliary it undertakes non-direct characteristics of shelters, meeting spaces and shortcuts in the urban scape.
As a downfall, Berlin underground stations develop as more than shady places. For instance, the film ‘Christiane F. - Wir kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo’ - 1981 (Christiane F. - Us children from Bahnhof Zoo) focuses on a group of West Berlin teenagers who get addicted to heroin. They’re place of hangout is an U-Bahn station around which are depicted scenes of drug dealing, violence and prostitution. Another example, is set in East Berlin in the film ‘Coming out’ focused on the LGBT community in an oppressive regime(the film first airs publicly the night Berlin wall fell). One of the scenes shows a man being beaten up by a group of people in a tube station for looking distinctive.
Tumblr media
From ‘Christiane F. - Wir kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo’
From a historic point of view, Berlin underground bears marks and tears, nowadays mostly concealed or erased, of the city’s life. In WW2 part of the tube stations served as air-raid shelters and  housed military wounded in trains on underground sidings. In the final Battle of Berlin, on 2 May 1945, the Nord-Süd-Bahn tunnel (a major service line) gets flooded, leaving behind an unknown number of casualties, making it paradoxically a safe space and a death trap.
The night commencing the 13th of August 1961, underground passengers were the first to experience the division of the city. The late-night trains started stopping at the boundary between sectors, travellers were brought to the side they belonged to, and outside there was the wall. In the following years to come, the whole metro system got separated, cut in two, being another form of disruption. Bearing this in mind, it had its blind spots, small inaccuracies given by the complexity of the rail system, both physical and political.
Certain lines(U6, U8 and S2), primarily in the West were still running under sections of Eastern ground. This services were not interrupted, but it was decided to continue working without stopping in Eastern stations. They become ‘ghost stations’; on western maps they are crossed out, while on eastern maps they disappear all together, access being sealed and guards permanently surveying them from newly built concrete booths. In 1989, shortly after Berlin wall fell, Max Gold films one of the ghost stations(Potsdamer Platz). In the video you can see the station, in a form of weathering and decay through lack of use, but at the same time it is frozen in time in 1961. There are not many differences to any other station in Berlin, besides the old posters and the guard booth, but it is covered in thick dust and tiles are falling off the wall. In 1992, Potsdamer Platz S-Bahn station is the last ghost station to reopen, after the restoration of the Nord-Süd-Bahn tunnel. The station looks awfully a lot as it looks in the 1989 footage, even the white tiles covering the concrete columns are kept the same, making it almost impossible to distinguish if you’re in 1961 or 1992 or 2019.

I’ve set as a direction for ‘Traces’ the insertion or change of an element in the Potsdamer Platz S-Bahn station that gives it a sense of temporality and spatial distinction, while alluding to its memory, without reconstructing it in any forward manner. By decomposing the station into component parts I focused on identifying the bit that interacts with the largest amount of people, that realistically, is touched, directly or indirectly, by anybody who passes through the space; and that would be the pavement/flooring. What I would find as being the three pieces characteristic for a metro station flooring are the general waiting area, the delimitation strip (for example the yellow line in London) and the space between the delimitation line and the track lines, where you are not allowed to step if the train isn’t in the station. This structure triggered my interest, as it creates a visual and tactile language that communicates to you through changes in colour and texture.
 Materiality, Form and Sizing
Tumblr media
After watching Adrian Forty’s lecture on his book ‘Concrete and culture’ I have reinforced my idea of concrete as a suited material for my endeavour. He argues for the multiple dualities of concrete; natural-artificial, historic-unhistoric, universal-local, memory-amnesia etc. Moreover, I took as inspiration Rachel Whiteread’s approach on concrete as a material that can embed the memory of an object, while creating an identity of its own. Through experiments, I have tested how different compositions of concrete get set or altered by the use of textiles. The indentations are generally made by using my fingertips not only to show how concrete can be easily manipulated, emphasising the antithesis between solidity and fragility, but also to give a scale for the striations that are meant to be felt while not being dangerous(if you’re not wearing stilettos). The patterns create shadows that give relief to the station, moving it away from a 2D register of materials.
The pavement is able to store information such as the weather outside, or the time of year, while being quite durable and easy to maintain. It might resemble to the eye the side of a river where there used to be water, suggesting the tunnel’s flooding (Potsdamer Platz was and is part of the  Nord-Süd-Bahn tunnel). The liminal bit is rougher making a visual statement of danger and brittleness, while the demarcation strip is set in wood and stuck in using mortar, talking about an old ‘doorstep’, that was hard to place, but effortlessly removed. The model is 40cm x 64cm so it can be tested. The liminal bit and the strip will rarely be stepped on as they have a width of 24cm while an average step from heel to heel is 76cm, leaving an untouched space.

do you think the show is going to just have all the kids in the same grade next season? they have to be a grade older by now right? i kind of feel like a lot of people say jonah is a year older than the GHC but i don’t even remember like where we got that information? do you think they’d show jonah going to high school while the rest of them are in middle school? the only sign that we’ve gotten that he’ll be in high school was the new frisbee team i feel like...
Jonah will be in high school but TJ and Marty are up in the air. We know that TJ and Marty are in the same grade but it was never established if they were in 7th or 8th grade in S2. And we don’t know Walker’s age either but it’s less relevant since he never went to the same school.
I know most people assume TJ was in 8th grade in S2 but there’s contradictory evidence. It’s true that it would make sense that he’d be in 8th grade if he’s captain but Buffy had no problem taking over the team as a 7th grader when TJ was benched. There’s also the fact that it would have been much harder for TJ to keep his math grades up in both grade 6 and 7 before failing in 8. As he tells Buffy after helping Cyrus get the Muffin, he needs at least a C+ in math it would make more sense if he barely got a C+ in grade 6 before failing in grade 7. And yes Buffy’s in advance math but if TJ went through a bunch of 8th grade tutors and none worked out I don’t see why Mr. Coleman would then look to a 7th grader no matter how smart she is. Sure TJ had a job which would point to him being older but there’s no way that a 7th or 8th grade kid would have the type of job he has; even if it’s his family’s gym he’d never be left alone with a bunch of little kids, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. We also have the fact that Jonah left for frisbee camp when the GHC and TJ still had school. It might be the case that 8th graders got out a little earlier but then why is TJ still in school?
I don’t think it really matters either way but I don’t think the writers actually decided in S2 which grade TJ and Marty were meant to be in. One thing that shouldn’t be overlooked is that Disney might well make the writers have TJ and Cyrus both be 14 and in 8th grade in S3 to avoid any whiff of scandal surrounding their first canon gay relationship. There is precedent for this, in the promo articles released shortly before Cyrus came out in 2x01, they made sure to state that Cyrus was 13 just like Andi and Buffy.
The actors are less than 3 months apart in age and that’s definitely by design. Since they’re the oldest of the cast and almost the exact same age Disney can avoid any complaints that they’re ‘corrupting’ child actors or forcing them into ‘mature’ story lines. And since there’s no age gap there’s no excuse other than homophobia to say that the characters holding hands or hugging is uncomfortable to watch, which could have been the case if one actor was 16 and one 14 for example. If TJ is in high school in S3 I think they’ll find a way to make him captain of some junior team or make sure to mention that he’s the star player of his new team. I think  part of what drew Terri to creating a character like TJ and got Disney to approve Tyrus is that TJ shatters a lot of gay stereotypes and I think they’ll want to keep him being a leader or star athlete to further that.
On Luke’s first day back on set for episode 5, Josh posted a photo of himself, Luke, and Sofia in front of the school which was very similar to the photo he posted on the last day of filming for S2 which was the Tyrus look back. Presumably that scene will lead into another Tyrus moment but that they filmed at the school rather than the spoon or another location suggests that TJ could still be going to middle school. One more data point is that Marty’s return scene was also filmed at the school and the scene includes Buffy and Cyrus. Also on set that day were Peyton and Luke. If they’re filming Marty’s return at the school it could well be because he still goes there.
Asher has also been scene at the school but much less since August as once the school year begins they only tend to film on Fridays and Saturdays and school holidays at the school (this also seems to accommodate his busy schedule which has him flying back to LA many weekends to work on music). It certainly would make sense to keep as many of the kids in the same grade as possible. When Josh mentioned that the original S2 order was just 13 eps I think that provides a clue as to why Jonah was established as older all the way back in S1. Partly it was to make him more of a cooler unattainable figure for Andi and Cyrus to crush on but if Terri and Disney were originally conceiving Andi Mack as a sort of HBO style mini series with only 13 eps a season then they very likely could have ended after 3 seasons and 39 eps with the GHC just finishing 7th grade so they’d never have to worry about Jonah not being in the same school as them.
As an aside, this would also explain many of the problems with Cyrus’ story line. If the series only has 39 eps it’s much easier to avoid dealing with Cyrus’ sexuality too much and they can avoid having to give him a boyfriend until the very end of the series. As Disney may have originally planned, they could get the good press but also not have to show very many gay scenes. S1 originally ended with Cyrus coming out, S2 would have ended with him coming out to Andi at the bash-mitzvah and getting to know TJ after the muffin and swing set scene, and presumably a 13 ep S3 would have largely followed 2b, Cyrus gets over his crush on Jonah and grows closer to TJ and the series finale ends with them confessing their feelings but without Disney having to show a gay relationship. It’s pretty clear that when Disney doubled the episode order for S2 they didn’t also double the number of gay moments they were willing to allow. And now that the series will end up with around 65 eps they’ll have to show Cyrus getting a boyfriend even though they probably wanted to avoid doing so.

The 100 rewatch: 1x05 Twilight’s Last Gleaming
I’m a new fan of The 100, who first binged it last year, August to November. This is my first full rewatch of the show. I was planning to start it anyway and finish it before the season 6 premiere on April 30, and when I saw that Fox Serbia was airing a rerun (Monday to Friday, 40 min. after midnight, with repeats the next day), starting on 1st February, it was a great opportunity to start my rewatch in HDTV on my beautiful new TV. I decided to do write-ups and tag other fans on SpoilerTV website, as I did when I was first watching the show. But my posts turned into full blown essays. So, finally, after over a week, I’ve realized: Why don’t I post them on my Tumblr blog, too? I’ll copy my write-ups of the first 7 episodes, and then I’ll post my rewatch posts after I watch each episode. (The next one, 1x08, is on Monday’Tuesday.)
Spoilers below for all 5 seasons of the show. I go of on a tangents and make a lot of references to future events.
Rating: 8.5/10
This episode really shocked me and emotionally affected me back when I first watched, and it's when I first realized the show didn't pull punches.
Killing individual characters for shock value - that's nothing new, but killing a bunch of innocent people like that, having the audience expect throughout the episode for them to be saved at the last moment, and then instead they die anyway, when it could have been stopped... I really wasn't expecting that. Now it's far less shocking after you've seen The 100 use mass murder as a plot device multiple times. Well, this is not a murder, technically, since the people eventually volunteered for it to saved their loved ones. But before Abby decided to be seriously badass and show Jake's video to everyone and tell them the truth about the Ark dying, the 100 being sent to the ground, and the upcoming culling, the Council was planning to straight up murder 320 people and then lie about it, claiming it was an accident. And, as Clarke points out to Bellamy in this episode, it's certain that those would have been working class people rather than the Ark elite. The class issues the show keeps stressing is of those things that keep it from justifying the Ark leadership for their actions on the grounds of survival, tough choices, blah blah blah, and I'm glad for it. Jaha was here planning to be one of the people who died (but I bet a large part of the reason was because he thought his son was dead... which he was, just not for the reasons he thought), until Kane convinced him not to. They had a back and forth about who's the better leader, with Jaha arguing Kane had the strength to make tough choices, and Kane arguing later that Jaha was able to inspire people. And they were both kind of right, but not in the way they thought. Kane has changed a lot during the show, from pragmatist to idealist, from pessimist to optimist, but he's always been a guy who 100% believes in whatever course of action he's chosen, thinks it's right and throws himself into it, in a way that often comes off as a bit naive. But he does suck at winning the popular vote, going by the fact that he was never elected Chancellor and that he lost to Pike in S3. While Jaha somehow managed to get elected, bull&s.hits really well in a speech in episode 1x07, and in S4 we see him give speeches to the people for the benefit of Clarke and Bellamy that show how good he can be at swaying people, even when he's not in power. But S2-3 also showed the most awful version of his messianic complex and influence. Something else that has always bothered me about the culling is, we see people sacrifice themselves for their children (like Tor Lemkin for his daughter Reese) or their romantic partners (the guy who wants to do it for his wife), which is something we see multiple times in the show. But we don't see how their loved ones feel about it, whether they tried to stop them (Tor's daughter Reese didn't realize what was going on, but the adults did). How will Reese will about losing her father when she learns what he did, and that he did it for her? In the next episode, we see the husband of one of the victims in the culling in 1x07, and in S5 we learn Kara Cooper's father was one of the 320. I wonder how many of the people from the Ark that lost there loved ones are even alive by S6? This is also the episode that made me feel better about the Clarke/Finn/Raven love triangle, because it was dealt with much better than I expected. Another reason why this was a turning point when I was really on board with the show. Speaking of that love triangle - this show really loves the scenes where Clarke is shocked and hurt to find out someone has a girlfriend by seeing him reunite with her and kiss her. They did the exact same thing in S5. And both times the camera zooms on Clarke's face rather than on the couple, though in this case, they didn't go as far as to blur Finn and Raven out of focus. But these are two very different situations, of course. Among other things, because in S5, it was no one's fault, while this situation is fully Finn's fault. I've loved the way Clarke dealt with learning Finn had a girlfriend, absolutely not doing the "being catty and fighting over a guy" thing, but the exact opposite. She's heartbroken, but she immediately bottles it up. She clearly hates being the 'other woman' and her instinct when feeling unwanted is to completely withdraw. You know who definitely isn't dealing with it well? Finn. He's clearly uncomfortable as he wasn't expecting Raven to come, and then he goes to indicate to Clarke that he would like to continue a relationship with her, which she refuses... so he then goes back to Raven and acts like everything is fine, because if Clarke doesn't want him, why not stick with Raven, and has no intention of telling Raven that he slept with someone else, or that he's in love with Clarke or that he would like to be with Clarke. Just like he never thought it would be right to tell Clarke that he has a long-term girlfriend on the Ark. Speaking of relationships, but in this case, not very serious ones, one of Bellamy's friends with benefits we see him in bed with in this episode, Bree (the blonde one), is the same girl who came onto him and presumably had sex with him in season 4, while partying as one of Jasper's end-of-the-world suicide group, and who went on to be one of those who killed themselves. But I'd be lying if I said I would make that connection if I didn't see it on The 100 wiki. The other girl, Roma, ends up killed by the Grounders in 1x07. This was still the time when Bellamy was often acting in a very frustrating way - due to his narrow focus on just Octavia and himself and not yet the group as a whole or people in general - and massively screwing up things, and never more than in this episode, by stealing Raven's radio and throwing it in the water, so Jaha couldn't come down to execute him. Now, he did know about the Ark being on its last legs, but had no idea about the culling before Raven told everyone. I predicted at the time that we'll see Bellamy feeling super guilty later, since he doesn't outwardly show it much in this episode, and boy, did we see that in 1x08. (Much more than we ever did from Jaha, who was actually directly responsible for it, but that's what Jaha is like, always justifying his actions as necessary.). Here, Finn, Clarke and Raven confront Bellamy about the radio, and the former two learn about Bellamy shooting Jaha, while Bellamy learns Jaha survived, but with a massive difference between how Finn and Raven confront him and how Clarke does. The former two are basically like "You're the worst" and Finn calls him selfish, while Clarke - already at this point - seems to understand him better and have a much better opinion of him: "You're not a murderer. All you have done is to protect your sister", though she then gets angry at him a bit later, asking if he even cares that he caused the deaths of 320 people. It's so weird that the flares the 100 use to signal the Ark won't help at all (the Ark leaders, aside from Abby, will just dismiss them), but will end up burning a Grounder village and cause more conflict with the Grounders. Which is so consistent with Murphy's Law - not the episode or John Murphy, but actual Murphy's Law - whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. But just to be clear, the Grounders using that to justify their war was utter bullcrap. There's no way anyone intelligent could consider the 100 an invading force (LOL) after seeing what they were like (and we know they did: Lincoln was spying on them and making notes) and anyone who's not a small child knows that people can't be considered guilty for causing things by complete accident, which they never could have predicted happening. (I just had to have that mini-rant because people who try to portray both sides as equally responsible, or even demonize the Delinquents and/or excuse the Grounders, get on my nerves, a lot.) A minor-running theme in this episode: at the beginning of the episode, when Clarke and Finn are lying together in the afterglow, before their super-brief relationship came came to a crushing end after Raven came back, Finn - always the one saying romantic things - mentioned a falling star and making a wish, which Clarke was initially confused by, since she just thought of meteors in real world terms and didn't know about that old superstition, while Finn said he had read about it. At the end of episode (in a moment I've seen in a few Tumblr gifsets!), when everyone is watching the flares, Clarke and Bellamy are looking at them together and she asks "What would you wish on a falling star" and then assumes Bellamy wouldn't understand what she's talking about. But she obviously does (the guy has read a lot), since he says "I don't even know what I would wish for". Which is probably true, and sad - I imagine that he had never given any serious thought to what he actually wanted out of life, beyond "Protect Octavia - make sure she is not discovered." Of course, the scene was also an occasion to show Clarke looking sadly at Finn and Raven, so we'll know she's actually really heartbroken and pining. There's more pining from Clarke in the next couple of episodes, and after that, IIRC, fortunately barely any. BTW, let's just take in the fact that Clarke, in all 5 seasons, has never actually properly dated anyone, or specifically, she had one friend with benefit with no stronger feelings involved, and she had the two romantic relationships (with people she had known for a few weeks. and who both relentlessly pursued her romantically and made the first moves) which lasted a few hours each and consisted of having sex exactly once, but were portrayed as epic romances, where 95% of the overall relationship, in both cases, consisted of not dating, but a lot of angst, betrayal, and ended in death, and Clarke getting traumatized and feeling guilty (without actually it being her fault). It's amazing how similar overall her relationships with Finn and Lexa are, including in how much they lasted and how much focus they had on screen and for how long, but one is almost completely forgotten and ignored by the fandom now, while the other one is over-hyped.

Trying to break the cancellation issue down: Week 2
Okay, so tonight I posted an entirely-too-long tweet thread on this issue, in which I recapped a lot of what I laid out in my post last week, as well some things I mentioned in response to an ask yesterday, and also new questions, information, and supposition. I thought I would try to lay it out here in a slightly more coherent issue.
First, however, I’m going to put it behind a cut. Because then if I have to edit any of this information, all the reblogs will link to the edited version instead of reblogging the incorrect/out-of-date version. Then I won’t have to make any future new posts on this subject.
Please keep in mind that this is all educated guessing. None of us know what’s really going on.
To recap what I laid out last week:
@freeform doesn’t own Shadowhunters. Freeform merely “leases” the domestic distribution rights from Constantin Film, who holds the adaptation rights.
(ETA 6/16/18) Freeform, however, has exclusive rights to this show indefinitely and it goes no where unless Freeform chooses to give them up. (this is a correction as I was mistaken before in believing the distribution rights would revert to Constantin after Freeform turned down Season 4)
@netflix doesn’t own Shadowhunters either. Netflix “leases” the international distribution rights from Freeform.
The money Netflix and Freeform pay Constantin for those rights funds production of the show.
Itunes, Amazon Video and Hulu all have domestic streaming of the show as well as Freeform.
Hulu likely acquires its streaming arrangement from Freeform, as the show carries the Freeform logo on Hulu. This makes sense; Disney owns part Hulu and all of Freeform.
I don’t know if Amazon and Itunes carry SH internationally, and I don’t know if they have their domestic streaming agreement from Freeform or from Constantin. I DO know they have a different streaming format than Freeform; you buy the episodes individually or the season entirely, rather than paying for a subscription service (I don’t think the show is on Amazon Prime as part of their subscription package, but I could be wrong.)
Something to keep in mind going forward:
Freeform is a business, and it’s going to be more helpful to us to regard this stance on the issue in terms of cost/benefit analysis, rather than assuming pettiness or malice or vindictiveness. I know having a villain in this scenario fires us up and keeps us raring for the fight, and we need that energy, but ultimately it’s not helpful in drilling down to the core issues and finding solutions.
Stupidity and tone-deafness are definitely sins we could probably fairly lay at their door, however. They have clearly underestimate both the passion of their audience and the importance of this show on a societal level, and those are tragic, foolish mistakes.
Shadowhunters and Freeform: A History:
As anyone who has ever looked at leasing versus buying a car or apartment will tell you, there are certain benefits to both arrangements, but usually in the long run it costs less to own something rather than to lease it. Which means that Freeform isn’t making as much money off SH as it is off the shows that are actually Freeform originals.
Why did Freeform acquire the distribution rights, then?
Well, ABC Family was intending to rebrand as Freeform and go after the millennial crowd, and it needed some new, edgier, more adult, more diverse, less family-oriented shows than The Fosters or whatever.
They also wanted to break into the streaming market instead of going with a live-airing-only model.
A show like Shadowhunters, based off a series of books their target audience enjoyed growing up, was obviously a good bet. Especially since that audience is largely comprised of binge-watching cord-cutters.
The goal, then, was to use Shadowhunters to draw the new audience in and to have it “shepherd” less established, Freeform-original franchises by hoping the SH viewers would stick around to watch whatever was in the 9pm time slot. And that worked well for them.
But once Freeform had a number of other, original shows doing somewhat well, the “benefit” side of the cost/benefit ratio began to decrease. It’s an expensive show to produce that isn’t performing well in live ratings and whatever money they’re making off it, they have to give a hefty portion of that to Constantin Film.
The cost (at least in terms of lost potential revenue) was further compounded by the fact that Shadowhunters was occupying a very coveted time-slot, 8PM, for 20 weeks of the year. That is a massive piece of prime-time real estate to give to a show that is no longer really needed to perform the functions they once required from it.
Malec_Immortal over on Twitter posted a pretty astute (if somewhat vitriolic) series of tweets about how you can identify the timeframe when Freeform made the decision to stop investing so heavily in Shadowhunters. YouTuber Trini did a side-by-side comparison of the effort the Freeform Twitter put into promoting s2 and the effort they put into promoting s3 and it couldn’t really be more blatant.) Now, maybe they might have continued with the show had season 3 performed better in the live ratings, but it’s obvious they were all about reducing their cost while trying to glean what dwindling benefit they could from it.
I think it’s clear that Freeform was still promoting the show up through August, at least, because the cast’s appearance at SDCC was an obvious investment that doesn’t appear to have been used to promote any other Freeform properties (though perhaps a few Disney ones) but by NYCC in October, it’s obvious that they had slotted SH into the role of mentor/veteran show whose primary purpose was to pull in viewers for Freeform’s other, wholly owned properties.
Perhaps if SH had performed well enough in live-airing views to justify a continued investment, Freeform wouldn’t have wanted to reduce their episode order for season 4, but that didn’t happen. At that point, the cost of continuing with a full 20-episode season outweighed the benefit. They tried to negotiate for a reduced season order, Netflix wasn’t happy with that, and now here we are.
Where does that leave us?
Freeform got the drop on everyone in terms of setting the narrative for this whole thing. They blamed it on Netflix for yanking out of their distribution deal and leaving Freeform holding the bag. In truth, however, it appears the only reason Netflix pulled out is because Freeform violated an agreement by demanding a shorter season for s4.
Which makes sense. Of course Netflix would want more and Freeform would want less; this show has always performed better on streaming and internationally than it has on live television.
I think it’s clear that somewhere along the way, Freeform (while not abandoning its streaming emphasis) has reverted to considering live-viewing ratings in its considerations. An obvious example is Beyond. Beyond performed well enough in its first season (shepherded, as it were, by Shadowhunters) to get a second season, but a large part of its success was the fact that it was dropped all at once for streaming-on-demand. For whatever reason, Freeform decided that wasn’t profitable and went to a different model for season 2, and Beyond performed abysmally and got the axe.
Unfortunately for us, they’ve been applying the Beyond-season2 model all along, which means Shadowhunters hasn’t been performing as well either by their calculations (though a great deal of that is down to reduced marketing and just using the show as a vehicle to promote other, Freeform-original properties.
For all that they claimed it wasn’t about the ratings and was “purely economical” you can’t divorce the economics of a show from the ratings if you’re using a live-air-viewing model. They needed that coveted 8pm timeslot for something that would be more profitable. They could have moved SH to a less valuable time slot, but then it wouldn’t make them enough money to earn back what they were spending on the distribution license (which funds production.)
Yeah yeah yeah, but what does this mean for the show getting picked up?
To put it frankly, our biggest obstacle here on multiple fronts is season 3b. Specifically, it’s the fact that Freeform has pushed 3b back to Spring of 2019. That is screwing our efforts over, big time.
These are episodes that are already in the can. The final cut of 3x20 has been produced, according to Todd Slavkin. And these are episodes that Freeform owns and still hasn’t aired.
No one is going to want to acquire this show until 3b has aired. (Assuming Freeform is willing to let anyone acquire it.) Which means no one is going to want to acquire it until Summer of 2019. And we probably wouldn’t get season 4 until spring of 2020 at the earliest.
I can’t think of a single other show that has been canceled with half the season still month away from being aired like this. And if it has happened, it probably wasn’t picked up by anyone else (if at all) until after the season was done.
Look at it this way. It’s obvious from their CEO’s tweets that Constantin would love to see the distribution rights pass to someone else (probably Netflix.) Netflix may even be willing to pick them up (if Freeform is willing to sell,) considering that who Constantin’s CEO tagged in his tweets.
But what happens to those 10 episodes that are in the can? Whoever picks the show up has to wait until Freeform is done airing those eps before they can begin marketing, and probably even filming.
Maybe someone would be willing to pay Freeform for those eps, but that’s highly unlikely. What new network wants to start a show mid-season like that? And would they even be willing to pay enough for Freeform to recoup their losses on production AND potential losses on advertising? A new network will want the story to be in a place where new viewers who have never seen it before will be able to tune in and quickly pick up on what is going on, and considering the cliffhanger S3a left off on, that’s...not something anyone EXCEPT Netflix (or maybe Hulu or Amazon, who already have the previous episodes in their libraries) would want to pick up. That pretty much rules out...every other network.
Furthermore, again, the show has always done best streaming. Odds are good that ONLY a streaming service is going to want the show.
Some questions we need to ask:
Will whoever acquires the show be paying Freeform to “adopt” their distribution license, or will Freeform’s distribution license lapse and a new license need to be negotiated with Constantin? (ETA 6/16/18: we appear to have an answer on that.)
Also, CAN Freeform even get out of the plan to film/air the 2-hour finale at this point? The contract has probably already been negotiated. Unless they somehow have an option to back out of it, they’re committed.
So, it may be that they HAVE to make that episode. Which probably won’t begin filming until season 4 would have begun filming, probably around August.  Which probably means the earliest they could air the season/episode is in January and we would HAVE to wait until spring/summer of 2019 before anyone else can pick up this show. IF they’re willing to pick up this show. If potential buyers see interest has waned because of the long wait and general frustration and disgust, they’re not going to want the show.
Will potential buyers even be interested if the show has run out of book-based material? The 2-hour finale is supposed to wrap up the final book of the series, and while our main concern is that 2 hours won’t be enough to do all that material justice (especially with any non-book-based plotlines also needing to be resolved.) Any future seasons would, in essence, be a spin-off using the same characters. Can Constantin even do that with the adaptation rights?
So what do we do?
I’m not saying we should stop fighting, not at all, but I’m saying we need to conserve our energy because this is going to be a very long haul. It’s a situation that is messy and complicated beyond any other show that I’ve ever heard of being cancelled and picked up by another network. We very likely won’t see any fruit from our labors until after 3b and the finale air, whenever that may happen. I think with the negative publicity we’re generating, Freeform may find it useful to get us out of their hair sooner rather than later, but the time required to produce the finale ep is an issue there.
We really need more answers to know how to most effectively apply pressure to get the show renewed. Our best bet for getting those answers is the same place we’ve gotten the information we have so far; interviews and articles. Some media outlets are already latching onto this story (and largely supporting us, or reporting that we’re not going away) but we need to keep making this A STORY in order to get them to report on it (and hopefully use their access to get more answers than we have.)
HOWEVER I could be wrong about any or all of this. OUR BEST BET IS TO CONTINUE BEING LOUD. DO NOT STOP TRYING TO GET THE SHOW PICKED UP.

Boku No Hero Academia Light Novel Vol. 3 -- Unofficial English Translation -- Chapter 2: “Dramatic Makeover”
T/N: Here’s a Chinese > English translation for the second chapter of BNHA Light Novel Vol.3. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a lot of banter, honestly. I really enjoyed the teachers’ interactions in the first chapter.
I’m hoping to see a proper Japanese > English translation at some point, especially to see Chapter 1 fully fleshed-out.  At least for this chapter, the Chinese translator expressed that they like Todoroki a lot and paraphrased less on his parts.
Disclaimers
Some parts were paraphrased by the Chinese translator. // ‘Quirk’ and ‘personality’ are the same, so there might be mix-ups. // It’s difficult to handle verb tense in Chinese. Hopefully I didn’t mess up the order of events too much. / Names. Honorifics don’t translate well. The Chinese characters were weird. “why is he talking about rice fields” “nvm that’s Iida”

Chapter 2: Dramatic Makeover
Yaoyorozu, who’d grown up utterly pampered in a palace-like home, was now packing for life in the dorms.
Her mother eyes the ten packing boxes with some trepidation. “Are you sure you’ve packed enough?” she hedges. “Did you bring a proper tea set? Make sure you have enough to serve the entire class – it’d be terribly awkward if you ran out of cups.” Then, “You did bring some formal attire, I suppose?”
None of this was necessary for learning at school, so Yaoyorozu obviously had not. “Better safe than sorry!” her mother insists. The house servant agrees, suggesting a few more packing boxes to fill with various luxury items.
Yaoyorozu contemplates it for a while, but eventually refuses, thanking her mother for her consideration.
“My daughter is growing up,” cries her mother.
Yaoyorozu is plied with a dozen boxes of fancy books and bookshelves, a gift from her father. Books are her absolute favorite. Yaoyorozu brushes away the tears that well up. It was time to move forwards to dorm life.
In mid-August, the students of Class 1-A assemble in front of their brand new home.
The atmosphere is heavy as they file into the dormitory, Aizawa-sensei’s lecture weighing on everyone’s minds**.
** See chapter 98 or wiki page for context
Tumblr media
Once Aizawa-sensei has finished the building tour and everyone’s received their room assignments, it’s time for the students to unpack and decorate their new rooms. But as Yaoyorozu waits at the elevators with everyone, Aizawa-sensei calls out to her. “Oi, these rooms are too small to fit more than five or six boxes of stuff. Pick out what’s most important and send the rest back.”
 “Eh, really?” Yaoyorozu flounders.
Meanwhile, the elevator dings at the 5th floor. Todoroki emerges and advances to his new room – only to halt. A small “ah” escapes him, then silence. Finally, in barely a whisper, “No… no tatami?”
Todoroki had already seen from the earlier tour that the rooms were Western in style. But having been raised in a traditional Japanese house, he couldn’t shake the feeling that his living quarters should be the same. Since students weren’t required to use the standard dorm furniture, Todoroki had brought his own.
“…” After rearranging his furniture for a while, Todoroki peers around the room with a grimace. No matter how he looks at it, the Western room and Japanese furnishings clash horribly. And the veranda… Sure, he’d gotten used to the verandas at school, but to have one in his own room seems terribly wrong. The cloth curtains (in lieu of shoji screens) also make him a bit uneasy.
Todoroki quickly finishes unpacking his sparse belongings. With nothing left to do, he flops onto the (strange Western) bed. He just can’t get used to any of this.
“From now on, I’ll be falling asleep and waking up here,” Todoroki declares to the room.
He’d been waiting to escape the ‘care’ of his damned father for years, but hadn’t expected the day to come so soon. The thought of his father brings a stormy expression to Todoroki’s face. He sits up on the bed, shaking his head as if he can forcefully eject his negative thoughts.
To try to alleviate his sore mood with a bit of fresh air, he opens the window and takes a deep breath. A vast forest stretches out beyond his vision, interspersed with the occasional UA building. But even the magnificent view from the top floor can’t dispel Todoroki’s unhappiness. He turns back to his new room and retrieves a dusty photo album. He tugs out a single faded photograph – his mother, beaming at the unmarred baby Shouto cradled in her arms.
Before, when Todoroki looked at this photo, he’d be hit with a wave of regret and fear that his mother would never smile the same way again. But no more. Now he knows that his mother is still full of laughter**. The picture soothes his troubled heart.
** See wiki page on Todoroki’s mother
Todoroki is beginning to feel much better when a gust of wind snatches the photo from his hands. The photo drifts out into the forest.
He rushes out of the dorm. How will he find a single photo in such a huge forest? He scours the ground, the trees, the UA buildings. “Where the hell did it go,” he mutters, a frown etching itself back onto his face. In the distance, he suddenly hears a mechanical clanging.
“?!” Out of nowhere, a small object comes hurtling into Todoroki’s (hastily-raised) wall of ice and falls to the ground with a thunk. It appears to be a large fist-sized gadget of sorts. “The hell is this?”
“That’s my baby!” a feminine voice retorts back. Ah, it’s the inventor girl from the Department of Support. Her performance in the UA Sports Festival had certainly been something. Not wanting to face the same fate as Iida, he offers the handful of machinery back to her.
 **bold = originally in English
** See wiki page for Hatsume Mei
Hatsume thanks him with a brilliant smile. She’s about to go off on one of her advertising spiels when one of her inventions zips by. A few others zigzag about in the distance.
“My baby! Wait up!” In the blink of an eye, Hatsume vanishes from view to chase down her precious machines.
“Hold up, there’s one over there too,” Todoroki points out. It’s finally dawned on him that she’s referring to her inventions.
“Help me catch it!” Hatsume yells over her shoulder.
“… Hah? Oi!” But his cries are lost to the wind. Todoroki flounders a bit, stunned.
Your machinery may be very important to you, but I’m also looking for something precious to me, Todoroki gripes. An especially strong gust sends a flurry of leaves up. His anxiety spirals up as well. In the time he’d wasted just now, the photo could have flown off even further.
He sends a wall of ice in the direction of the machines to freeze them in place. That settles that. He heads off to resume looking for the photo.
But more clanging and whirring reaches his ears. Are there more gadgets out there? Todoroki is at a loss.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, Todoroki recalls Iida’s response to the Bakugou Rescue Squad. Though Iida hadn’t agreed with the group’s reasoning, he’d joined to make sure he could watch over and protect everyone.**
** See Hideout Raid arc – Summary – Infiltration Preparation
Iida is a serious student and responsible class president. Had Iida been placed in this position, he wouldn’t hesitate to lend a helping hand. And as a prospective hero, Todoroki obviously can’t turn down a person in need. He turns back towards the machine whirring. Though the lost photo is dear to him, he take the time to freeze the other gadgets.
(Oblivious to the events outside, Iida is in his room, organizing his book collection.)
Finally, Todoroki captures the last gadget. Some belated introductions are exchanged. Hatsume sheepishly admits that she’d tripped and triggered the power switch for the gadgets earlier, when she’d been unpacking her own room.
“Did you really make all of these?” Todoroki is rather awed. “Amazing!”
Fluffed up with pride, Hatsume restarts her earlier spiel on her inventions.
Todoroki listens with half an ear. “Is this all of the machines?” he suddenly interrupts.
It turns out they’re missing one. This particular invention is barely the size of a prune, but weighs a ton. It’s designed to latch onto villains so they can’t escape under the added weight, Hatsume explains.
“Well, if it’s that heavy it can’t have gone far, right?” Todoroki offers hopefully.
“I’ll look around, then!” Hatsume agrees. “My quirk is ‘Zoom’, so I can see objects up to 5 kilometers away!”
“I’ll check any blind spots,” Todoroki decides. He heads off. Then he backtracks. “Hey, if you see a photograph with that ‘Zoom’ of yours, can you let me know?”
“A photo? Ah,” Hatsume’s eyes light up in understanding. “So you were looking for something! Sure!”
A voice suddenly cuts into their conversation. “Hey, what are you youngsters doing out here? Shouldn’t you be unpacking right now?” It’s Recovery Girl, who’s out for a stroll.
Hatsume explains the situation, and Recovery Girl offers to look over Hatsume’s blind spots with Todoroki. But after they peer into the nearby nooks and crannies and decide to move on, Recovery Girl trips over some tree roots. Todoroki rushes to catch her, but she rights herself.
Noticing Todoroki’s outstretched arms, she smiles warmly at him. “You wanted to help me? Thank you, young man!” She adds, good-naturedly, “I trip rather often anyways though, since I’m getting old.”
Recovery Girl considers Todoroki for a moment. “Really, Endeavor’s son is already this grown up!”
“Ah…” Todoroki scowls at the mention of his father’s name. This goes unnoticed by Recovery Girl, who begins rambling about the Endeavor as a student, and his aspirations to be the greatest hero.
But all Todoroki could hear was that terrible, hated rumbling voice, “In my place, to fulfill my dreams, you will surpass All Might to become the greatest hero.”
“I don’t want to hear about that guy,” Todoroki cuts in. Recovery Girl is immediately apologetic.
An alarm goes off, coming from the direction of the road. Recovery Girl heads over to assess the situation, while Todoroki heads deeper into the forest.
He stumbles over something. It’s a prune-sized machine. Todoroki gives it a tentative tug. It’s quite heavy. Well, this is definitely the right one.
Todoroki yells out that he’s found the gadget. The sound is buried under a sudden cacophony of mechanical clanging.
It appears that one of the gadgets has captured Recovery Girl in some steel rope. Hatsume speculates that some of the circuitry must have been damaged when the gadget fell, and it mistakenly set Recovery Girl as a target.
Recovery Girl had tried to evade the machine earlier, but she’d tripped again, allowing the rope to snag her.
Todoroki valiantly attempts to free her. Unfortunately, he gets tied up as well. Now dangling together with Recovery Girl, escape attempt thoroughly botched, he apologizes profusely.
(read Aitai’s Japanese > English translation of the following scene here and here)
Kirishima Eijiro. Todoroki hadn’t ever really spoken to the boy before they’d teamed up to save Bakugou. But they’d shared the frustration of having the League of Villains snatch away Bakugou in front of their noses. For Kirishima to have his dear friend whisked away, without getting the chance to do anything about it – well, Todoroki could certainly empathize. This frustration was what drove the students to form the Bakugou Rescue Squad, anyways.
In the current situation? Kirishima would probably act according to instinct, complete with a ‘manly’ desire to help others…
As it turns out, Kirishima is presently on the 4th floor, helping his next-door-neighbor Bakugou unpack. One of Bakugou’s boxes had gotten mixed in with Kirishima’s luggage earlier. When Kirishima dropped off the box, he’d decided he might as well help out.
“Hey Bakugou, what’s this stick?” Kirishima inquires. “Some weapon?”
“That’s for mountain climbing, dumbass.” Bakugou snaps. “Why are you such a pain in the ass? Go the hell back to your own room.”
At Bakugou’s scrunched-up scowl, Kirishima just laughs, unfazed. “Hey now. Two is better than one, right? When we’re done with your room, let’s head over to sort out my room too!”
“I bet, you lazy ass! You’re just slowing me down!” Bakugou doesn’t put any real weight behind his harsh words.
Rescuer and the rescued. The breeze drifting in through their new home scatters the vestiges of unfamiliarity between the two.
Todoroki attempts to break the ropes. Unfortunately, the more he struggles against the unyielding steel, the higher he and Recovery Girl get hoisted up by the ropes. Hatsume’s remote control isn’t working either.
“Damn… in a time like this… if only Yaoyorozu was around!”
Like Iida, Yaoyorozu had also disapproved of the Bakugou Rescue Squad, but had joined them to make sure no one would engage in combat.
With her ability to stay cool-headed in any situation and her superior knowledge and strategizing – if it was Yaoyorozu, she’d definitely be able to come up with a solution!
Meanwhile, Yaoyorozu is still on the 1st floor trying to cut down on her luggage.
 “Silverware… it can go.”
“For paintings, just one will suffice.”
“Shoes… three pairs is enough, right? Ah, but I really need a pair of heels. There’s just no room! I’ll just have to go with the bare minimum for everything. Screw it, one pair of shoes it is.”
Todoroki racks his brain for ideas. He could possibly use either side of his quirk to deal with the rope, but Recovery Girl could get seriously hurt in the crossfire.
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to dismantle the machine,” Hatsume finally says, defeated. “I’ll go fetch some tools from the workshop!” But as she turns to leave, the two captured begin flailing about violently.
The offending machine – unwilling passengers and all – begins to roll away, along the road. Hatsume makes to send her other gadgets after it, which is totally ineffective and nearly gets her caught as well.
“Oi, don’t mess around,” warns Todoroki.
“Go call a teacher,” Recovery Girl decides. Meanwhile, Todoroki’s getting swung about. He eyes something ahead with trepidation. The gadget is approaching a large, deep pit, one that was used by the second-years for practice. And now they’re on track to go tumbling into a bottomless chasm. If they fall in with the huge machine, it can only end in tragedy.
Todoroki can no longer conceal his anxiety. The machine is still making for the pit with speed. There’s no time to call for help. Should he take a chance with his quirk? No, but… What to do?
As he becomes increasingly panicked, the face of his friend comes to mind. Even in a life-or-death situation like this, Midoriya would never give up! Todoroki recalls when they’d tried to save Bakugou while All Might and All for One were fighting.  Though there had seemed to be no way to get to Bakugou, Midoriya had come up with a way to succeed.
Todoroki regrets that his own deep-seated, long-standing hatred against his father had caused him to lash out at Midoriya, his friend.
On the 2nd floor, Midoriya is quite upset. Over what? The order of his All Might figurines, of course. Disregarding daily necessities, All Might paraphernalia had taken up a good half of Izuku’s luggage. Position, order, and angle all must be considered…
Todoroki is still desperately trying to figure out what Midoriya would do in this situation. Finally, he comes up with something. He yells out to Hatsume, “Toss the heavy prune gadget to me!”
“Hah?” Though confused, Hatsume retrieves the small gadget. “Wait! Do you really want me to throw this over?!”
“Yes,” Todoroki confirms. “Aim for my mouth!”
Using ‘Zoom’, Hatsume lines up and (nervously) sends the gadget sailing over.
Todoroki catches it with his teeth and swings his body to the side. The altered center of gravity makes one end of the machine lift up. The machine attempts to advance with a single set of wheels and eventually topples over, precariously close to the edge of the pit. Todoroki dives under Recovery Girl to cushion her fall onto the road.
 “Whew, that was close!”
Todoroki just winces at the weight in his mouth, still pinned under Recovery Girl.
The runaway machine finally shuts down after some loud clattering and Hatsume rushes over to check over the finally freed hostages. Todoroki finally spits out the small gadget and confirms that he’s fine.
“I’m okay as well,” Recovery Girl concedes.
“Great!” Hatsume beams. “And using the weight of the heavy prune gadget to unbalance the runaway machine was brilliant! What valuable data!”
“Can we get these ropes off first?” Todoroki asks dryly.
So Hatsume runs off to the workshop to fetch some tools, returning with Power Loader. Finally, they sever the steel ropes and free Todoroki and Recovery Girl. Power Loader immediately begins chastising Hatsume.
** See wiki page on Power Loader
“Oh right!” Hatsume, who had been quietly been nodding along to Power Loader’s berating, suddenly reaches into her pocket. “I found this in a tree on my way back. Is this what you were looking for?”
It’s the photograph of Todoroki and his mother. A brilliant smile stretches across his face, and he thanks Hatsume profusely. She rummages in her pile of machinery until she emerges, triumphant.
She offers a strangely familiar basketball-sized barrel as a gift to Todoroki. “Let me know what you think after you’ve played with your friends!” Hatsume and Power Loader then start on the task of moving away all the machinery.
Recovery Girl is about to address Todoroki when she notices a gash on his cheek. When Todoroki had dived under Recovery Girl to cushion her fall, he’d ended up scraping his face on the ground.
She fixes him up with her quirk and pulls out some candy. “Here’s some soft candy, eat up! Thank you for saving me. Hard-working children get more rewards!”
“It’s nothing.” Todoroki ducks his head, accepting the considerable pile of candy. “Any of my friends would have done the same.”
Todoroki startles a bit. Just a while ago, these sorts of thoughts would have never entered his mind. But he acknowledges and accepts the changes to his mindset as personal growth.
Coming to UA had been really good for him.
At Todoroki’s gentle expression, Recovery Girl cheerfully responds, “True, true. You and all your classmates are working hard. It’s true now, and it was true in the past. Not a single person is slacking off. But to occasionally recognize and applaud your own efforts? That’s perfectly okay!”
“Okay.” Todoroki puts a piece of the candy into his mouth. … Did my father also work hard at UA? He shakes his head to banish the thought.
Recovery Girl asks how moving into the dorms is going. Todoroki recalls his strange new room. He just can’t seem to get used to it.
Upon hearing this, Recovery Girl drags him off to the off-campus junkyard. “I think I have just the thing for you!”
When they get there, Todoroki’s eyes light up. In the corner are some apparently brand-new tatami mats, shoji, and traditional furniture!
“Even though these were used for a class, no one will mind if you take them. I’ll contact the teacher to let them know,” Recovery Girl reassures.
“You have my heartfelt thanks.” Todoroki bows and sees Recovery Girl off, then returns to the dorms. What a day. He lets a deep sigh of relief escape him.
He’s opening the brand new doors to his dorm room – in a brand new chapter of his life. Though there are some things he won’t be used to, Todoroki is certain it’ll be okay if it’s at UA.
Now, time to start remodeling! He rolls up his sleeves.

Chapter 3, Part One
tl;dr   “Yes,” Todoroki confirms. “Aim for my mouth!”

S2: RSI Tournament - A Memoir (Part 4)
Part 1 HERE Part 3 HERE
10. Ready, Set, Ink! Facts
There were a total of 12 teams and 58 cephalopods that registered for this tournament.
Tumblr media
Using Challonge, the 12 teams were divided into groups of 2 (6 teams per group). Tofu team ended up in Group A.
Tumblr media
The tournament ran in round-robin format, meaning every teams were required to face each other within their group like so:
Tumblr media
Team captains were required to contact each other and arrange a time for battle. All battles have to be completed before 28th July. It was not necessary to fight teams in round sequence; in fact, the rounds were merely to determine the ranked mode sequence:
Round 1 Splat Zones Tower Control Rainmaker Clam Blitz Turf War
Round 2 Tower Control Clam Blitz Splat Zones Rainmaker Turf War
Round 3 Rainmaker Splat Zones Clam Blitz Tower Control Turf War
Round 4 Clam Blitz Rainmaker Tower Control Splat Zones Turf War
Round 5 Rainmaker Tower Control Splat Zones Clam Blitz Turf War
A total of 8 teams (top 4 each group) would be qualified for Knock-Off round held on 4th August 2018.
11. Qualifying Rounds
The current tournament setting allows some flexibility under a pretty tensed deadline.
It was fun to see how other team worked: Team 7 arranged that most of their battles could be complete in a day; Maws arranged their battles on a whim; Sukalu spaced their battles to allow more training in between; ViolentlyPangoro provides a an organised availability schedule during discussions; Squidsbeak Splat Tim is only available after 12.30am.
louhai wanted to pull a Team 7, but we vehemently rejected it in consideration of our members’ battle condition. He would later (briefly) passed the leadership mantle to me in order for me to facilitate battle time between teams; poor guy was stressed out from juggling family time and team’s time arrangement-- particularly with SST.
Ideally, I wanted to finish all battles within the first few days of the week to allow some time for rest and practice; SST’s availability put a damper on my plans. I pushed the match to Friday night to control the damage on my team’s status.
a) vs YOLO (2pm, Sunday)
YOLO was a team formed by single registrants, mostly of fresh cephalopods. I had the opportunity to face them in a practice match they held with a couple of community members. The result was me doing 18 kills with a Hydra Splatling at first time usage.
(Looking back, the above experience may have contributed to me picking Heavy Splatling later.)
Aria was a concerning factor; she tends to boast a little on her network with US Spla2n players and often plays with Fito (a Malaysian Spla2n vet). She improved pretty swiftly as well in terms of ranked.
JKLAUS and Joel were assault players, but they were still very fresh.
500K was their notable long range support, I was often disturbed by her Jet Squelcher.
It seemed that my concerns were for naught, as the resulting matches were pretty one-sided. All in all, it was a curb-stomp battle with nothing notable to write of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
b) vs LMoU (Last Minute of Us) (10pm, Sunday)
LMoU is an all girls team.
Their leader, Maiki, used to participate Ink Your Heart Out! as team Avengers. It was touching to see her again, taking a more active role to boot.
Sapphire was a member of Avengers too. Other than being a popular Splatoon artist, she is also a S ranker who masterfully wields NZap ‘85.
Mogu is a new face, but she eventually becomes more familiar as she hangs out in Splatoon 2′s Messenger group chat.
hikk is also a new face. Not much is known about her, except that she uses long range weapons like Splat Charger and Dualie Squelchers.
The day before tournament started, we actually bumped into them in League. We never really had a fair battle due to the constant stream of disconnects, but the impression obtained was that they are manageable.
Splat Zones
There were two internet hiccups in the beginning, which caused an incident within the runners. Nevertheless, in ended with me hosting the match (surprisingly without any disconnects).
Splat Zones in Shellendorf Institute carries a special place in my heart because it’s where we had one of our rare victory against [ ].
For this match, slap and I started by perching on the roof. Sapphire had attempted to ambush us, but my toxic mist slowed her for a second, enough for slap to splat her with his Dynamo. We then did most of out defending below, with Kuniki and louhai flanking and ambushing.
The highlight of the moment for me was when three of LMoU members fell under my RBP. Sapphire got me in the end as if out of heroic vengeance, though she was quickly taken out by slap.
All in all, I netted a lot of good kills on this one:
Tumblr media
Tower Control
If slap ever doubted himself, this was the battle data I would use to motivate him and remind him of his worth.
This was a particularly memorable battle where everyone moves like a clockwork. I could still remember how everyone sync’d: while the original plan was to have me on the tower, slap as the backliner/support, with Kuniki and Furi flanking together... there came a point where our roles were switched, that Furi was on tower and I was returning to the skirmish spot. Upon seeing me, slap took on the role and joined Kuniki in flanking towards the enemy base while I stood carefully at the back, pressuring enemy with my range and AoE hits. Each and everyone of us switching into different roles seamlessly, adapting towards the situation.
Tumblr media
Rainmaker
This was a very quick run, with Furi carrying the Rainmaker towards the base. Three of us got splatted except Kuniki.
The match ended very impressively because Kuniki carried the Rainmaker to the pedestal.
Kuniki, who used to refuse to carry, carried the Rainmaker to the pedestal.
“POTG MVP!” commented Rezi on the Live Stream of this match. Yup, he certainly was for this match.
Tumblr media
Overall, it was a good one.
c) vs Violently Pangoro (8.30pm, Tuesday)
Anticipating the fight with VP unnerves me because, unlike most teams which I had some form of data, I had nothing on them. Nada, zilch, zero.
Their battles were postponed quite often, so we ended up being their first opponents.
After a few connection issues, we managed to get onto the match:
Tower Control
Swift match, I reckon the opponents are unfamiliar with the map. We won this one without much fuss.
Tumblr media
Clam Blitz
It is unsure whether if we let our guard down, or our opponents are adapting. We had a few easy net breaks in the beginning before they gathered themselves and defend their net well.
Nick and vp-keron were quite notable in my memory. We managed to KO bonus.
Tumblr media
Splat Zones
They actually put up a better fight in this one! I was quite impressed considering how fresh they looked, but they really done their best.
Despite us having the KO bonus, it was wrung out of them with some difficulties.
Tumblr media
Despite being one of the newer teams, I respect their adaptability. In terms of skill and experience, they were perhaps on par with YOLO. In fact, I was looking forward to see the battle results between them and YOLO.
(It was unfortunate that both teams ended up not fighting each other due to a feud born out of miscommunication and poor time management.)
d) vs Unclesotongs (9.30pm, Wednesday)
Unclesotongs was another old face from Ink Your Heart Out. Back then, they were known as littlesotongs. It seems that the little one has evolved into an uncle. Come next tournament, would they name themselves Grandpasotongs?
Nevertheless, my team was pretty relaxed when facing them... and that perhaps was what made the battle difficult.
Clam Blitz
Briefly recalled there was some struggle in the beginning, close calls in the middle. Ultimately, they still managed a KO bonus. slap especially guarded well.
Tumblr media
Rainmaker
Rainmaker’s loss was mainly due to map unfamiliarity. I would pin the blame on myself for leading them on the roof when we would later learn that left and middle are more viable options.  All in all, it was a painful match.
Tumblr media
Tower Control
It was my disconnect that caused a loss on our end, but the match being really painful to play. Star was particularly good at ambushing with his roller that my hand can’t help but twitched restlessly (if only I had tri-slosher). The ground was filled by their turf, making it hard to traverse.
Tumblr media
Splat Zones
A match that was too close for its own good. The difficulties were mostly due to the lack of range, but Tofu managed to came through after a series of zone exchanges.
Tumblr media
Turf War
A fairly balance match, only to be thrown off due to SotongZero disconnecting.
Tumblr media
While Tofu had won this match, it had been a wake-up call for us to not take things too easy. There were simply a lot to reflect; had we grown tardy? Was it weapon range? Why were we having difficulties with them?
12. Reflection, Splatlings and Atomic-senpai
louhai and jp_BoomSS would later have an exchange in which we would learn that UncleSotongs’ strategy was inspired by Harapan. Their curiosity on how Harapan gave us a hard time made them watch for their weapons and tactics.
The information made me sick to the stomach; it is undeniable that range and turf was one of the issues, and despite our victory, I hated on how it felt like our weakness was being exploited. I hated that I could not prevent that weakness from being exploited, that I wasn’t playing my role well enough to stop them... that I couldn’t do my job well enough as a Long Range support... all in all, I went through a quiet emo phase because I felt that I had let my team down.
Still, considering that turfing was an issue, I decided to switch to the Splatling family which would at least have both range and turfing capabilities as well as allowing me to defend myself better against melee/short range assaulter.
It was Friday evening when I started farming chunks for a Splatling set, just hours before our final match with SST. Wanting to see a familiar face (or at least attempt to be social), I randomly joined a Friend for Turf War.
Said friend happened to Atomic.
Atomic was a member of Yaoika (now Diamantia), an Oceanink Division 1 team. Thanks to our connection with Rezi, Tofu became a little more acquainted with Nameless members and few Yaoika members (namely Atomic and Goizord).
I hopped in without much expectations, just looking forward to a chill turf time; what I did not expect was me getting toyedchased around by a highly skilled player.
In fact, I would never forget that moment: I was so far off the middle of Blackbelly Skate Park when Atomic spotted me and made a beeline towards me for a kill! We danced in our base before I splatted him with a partial charge. It was an exhilarating feeling, it was like looking at Death in the eyes and survived!
Of course, the subsequent matches against him was almost impossible, but getting every splat on him was a satisfaction.
(Upon knowing that I was farming for chunks, he actually allowed me to win a few games when we’re opponents. Regardless, the gap of skill was clearly felt as he zipped towards our base in mere seconds in the beginning, and was able to hide and ambushed/squid danced at a small ink patch. If he were serious, I would probably have die a thousand deaths already.)
e) vs Squidbeak Splat Tim (12.30am, Saturday)
The original plan was to let louhai and Furi rest as they have work on Saturday, but everyone agreed in wanting to see the match ‘til the end together. At this, I was proud of Tofu’s spirit.
SST was one of the top dogs in Group A, winning most of their matches. Our match was something a few people looked forward to because it would be between two teams who had not lose a single battle.
Their team leader, Fito, is a well-known veteran who uses Splat Roller. He was the one that everyone was quite wary of (skills for others, attitude for moi).
Agent 8 (a.k.a Nao Raine) was an Ink Brush user. louhai was pretty happy when he know of this fellow Ink Brush user’s existence that he overhyped his skills.
HahA_xDD and Bryanwolol were really fresh squids who uses Tri-Slosher and Splattershot respectively.
As we roughly knew their weapons on this one, I decided to stick to Tri-slosher Noveau.
Rainmaker
There was a disconnect in the beginning on SST’s end, but my overall thoughts gathered from the battle was “Is that it?”.
Agent 8 could never beat me if we were to go face to face (yay for Tri range), and Fito wasn’t that hard to handle. I could not help but wonder if my face-off against Atomic earlier had made the battle seemed easier.
All in all, Rainmaker was a pretty smooth trip with me carrying the pedestal under Furi’s protection.
Tumblr media
Splat Zones
Another quick one. The key was really to take out Fito and Agent 8; Kuniki went all out with that one while I turf as best as I could.
Tumblr media
Clam Blitz
I swapped louhai to play in this one so that he would not stay up late in vain.
Furi was really familiar with this map, to the point that Kuniki called Sturgeon Shipyard Furi’s map. It showed, considering that she broke their net most of the time.
In this match, it was also clear that Fito was the one doing most of the hard work... but alas, Splatoon 2 is a team’s game, not a One Person Glory’s game.
Tumblr media
The whole match resulted Tofu team in being the Top Dog for Group A.
The Qualifying Rounds ended, and we entered a week of break before Knock Off rounds.

DUNGEON  ON  THE  MIND-STAGE ?
________________________________________________________________
Musings on the 'Serbian-Scene' in TEH and playing with it on a metaphorical level
Sherlock chained to the walls of this dungeon, beaten with a metal bar by a brute and Mycroft sitting by ... watching calmly .... it never felt right to me. And a lot of other things contradict themselves in this scene as well.
Tumblr media
More under the cut ....
Why has Mycroft to visit that prison himself ... 'smuggling his way into their ranks'. Does he not have a lot of experts at his command, trained exactly for this sort of action? Also .... this must have taken a lot of time. Who replaced the 'british government' in London while Mycroft was away, doing the much despised 'legwork'?
Maybe Mycroft wanted to go himself because it was about Sherlock, his little brother, whom he always worries about so much? Then why doesn't he show his concern in any way?
Maybe Mycroft couldn't use words because there was the risk of being overheard? Sure, the first few sentences are wispered but the last words - and very revealing words by the way ('Back to Baker Street, Sherlock Homes') - aren't wispered at all.
Besides, there isn't the slightest hint that someone is watching this interrogation somewhere from the outside - unlike the one of Jim Moriarty at the end of THOB. There is no quick shot of a little camera lens in a dark corner, nor a tiny red laser light to clarify the possibility of being watched or overheard. No one is monitoring that scene from a different room. On the contrary, it is explicitly shown that the soldier outside the door wears earplugs and listens to music ... he's not interested at all in what happens behind him in that dungeon.
Maybe Mycroft can't express his worry and concern with words because ... he simply doesn't do things that way? Very plausible .... but ... There is no concern or worry or empathy in his eyes either. Nothing! Just sarcasm, scorn and cynicism. And I wont even start about the hair pulling or comparing torture to 'holidays'.
In fact, Mycroft seems much more concerned to get Sherlock back to London in time to ward off a possible terror attack, then he is about his bleeding and tortured little brother. Which reminds me a lot of Eurus in Sherrinford and her special 'utility':
'There is, in this facility, a prisoner whose intellectual abilities are of occasional use to the British government.'
Mycroft seems to have a certain tendency to free his siblings from prisons when he needs their extraordinary talents for his own purposes.
Tumblr media
So, my friend. Now it’s just you and me. You have no idea the trouble it took to find you. Now listen to me. There’s an underground terrorist network active in London and a massive attack is imminent. Sorry, but the holiday is over, brother dear. Back to Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes.
Tumblr media
"I got you out."  .......  "No – I got me out."
There is clearly something in Sherlock's hand and it looks a lot like a key.
Tumblr media
Question is ... how was Sherlock able to get hold of a key? Had it been already in his hands before he got chained up in that room? Then why didn't the torturer notice it? I heavily doubt anyone - even Sherlock Holmes - is able to pinch something while chained from wall to wall with outstreched arms. The next thing I also heavily doubt is that Sherlock would be able to use that key to free himself. The hinge of the shackle is clearly on the underside ... therefore the keyhole must be on the back of the hand. Seems very, very impossible for Sherlock to 'get himself out'.
Well .... and that's the next thing which reminds me of Eurus in Sherrinford ... behind Elephant Glass.
Tumblr media
Two prisoners - under normal circumstances - unable to free themselves by their own power - and yet ... neither a high tech security prison, equipped with elephant glass ... nor shackles and heavy chains forged of iron, can keep them inside.
Eurus apparently is able to walk through elephant glass every time she wants to break free.
Sherlock holds the key to his bonds in his own hands, ready to get himself out when he wants to.
By the way ... apparently Jim and Ajay can't be held in captivity as well. They too walk away from torture and prison under dubious circumstances. Not sure about Alex, but it's always suspicious when a charachter dies off stage. And Gabriel ... except for the name there's not the slightest bit of information about that guy. So, who knows ....
Taken as a 'real life scene' Sherlock's captivity and torture in this prison in Serbia ... ordered by a man who is called 'Baron Maupertius' ...  appears to be at least a bit dubious. (I know Baron Maupertius is canon but still .... a Baron in the 21st century in Serbia???) Could it be that this whole scene has the distinct flair of someone who loves to be .... dramatic? Anyway, I dare to doubt ... and therefore:
A metaphorical reading of the dungeon scene in Serbia
Based on the assumption that Sherlock is already investigating and deducing on his Mind-Stage at the beginning of 'The Empty Hearse' ... with
Mycroft representing the BRAIN
Sherlock the SOUL
London equating Sherlock's BODY
Terrorists .... being synonymous with EMOTIONS
... what would that scene look like?
So, my friend. Now it’s just you and me. You have no idea the trouble it took to find you. Now listen to me. There’s an underground terrorist network active in London and a massive attack is imminent. Sorry, but the holiday is over, brother dear. Back to Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes.
Tumblr media
BRAIN:  "Ok, SOUL ... I watched you torture yourself long enough. Stop this nonsense and put yourself together! You are severly needed by your BODY. Return at once because very soon EMOTIONS will rise and attack again. Get ready for it. Find and defuse all the 'danger points' (explosives) ... unless of course, you want to become a prisoner of your own meat! ... You had enouth time to catch your breath! Get up! The game is on again!"
Torture yourself? .... let's take a closer look at the torturer then
TORTURER: He said that I used to work in the navy, where I had an unhappy love affair ... that the electricity isn’t working in my bathroom; and that my wife is sleeping with our next door neighbour! The coffin maker! ... If I go home now, I’ll catch them at it! I knew it! I knew there was something going on!
Tumblr media
The torturer worked in the navy .... a sailor then? Interesting. Serbia is a country without access to the sea. But then, the man (who speaks Serbian) could have been a mercenary in some other army. Who knows? A mercenary in the navy .... maybe he even was a .... PIRATE?
Unhappy love affair ..... the sailor/pirate once loved someone, but it went wrong. And then he gave up his profession as a 'pirate'? Because of a broken heart? Well, well ....
Electricity not working.... if it's not working then there is no light ... then it is rather DARK. Which impairs the sight considerably. A bit like 'shortsightedness'?
In the bathroom .... the bathroom is definitely the one room in a house/flat which has the strongest connection to ... WATER. A lot of water in a bathroom. A lot of 'dark water' ...... if the electricitiy isn't working .....
The wife is cheating with a coffin maker .... someones life partner is cheating with a person who creates sort of 'closets/cupboards for dead people' .... who puts dead people into narrow boxes .....
If the torturer goes home at once, he will chatch them cheating .... hm, maybe if the 'former pirate' returns to London immediately, he will arrive just in time to be present for ... an engagement?
There is even a little bit of additional information hiding in plain sight regarding this 'torturer'. He wears a Tattoo. Nothing unusual for a former sailor or a mercenary one might say. In combination though this tattoo becomes very interesting because it is Mary who also wears a 'secret tattoo'. Sharing more than 30 similarities makes her a major mirror for Sherlock. Therefore I wouldn't be much surprised if somewhere on Sherlock's body waits a tattoo to be discovered as well.  :)))))
It really looks like - on a metaphorical level -  this torturer is no one else than Sherlock who is torturing himself in the solitude of his mind.
Conclusion
Something happens in S2 TRF and Sherlock ... panicks. My humble guess: Jim happens. Oozing sexuality and darkness like never before, threatening Sherlock to break into every corner of his being, to occupy even the most secure and heavily locked places ... 'the man with the key is king and honey you should see me in a crown' ... no place of power, no prison is secure enough to keep him out ... not even the crown jewels are safe anymore. : )))
Sherlock tries to get rid of Jim, then fakes his own death (just to be safe) and goes on a mental hiatus to find his former equilibrium again. Only ... it doesn't work. It turns out that being away from BODY and HEART doesn't change anything. On the contrary ... the distance becomes torture, unbearable suffering. At last Sherock's own BRAIN - logic and reason - tells him to stop that misery and go back to where he belongs. Sherlock has to find either a way to defeat/delete his emotions entirely or .... lose the war and surrender to that powerful 'underground network'.  And we know already how this battle ends .......  :)))
Bonus-Pics ________________________________________
Obviously the torturer doesn't use a tyre lever to beat Sherlck. It's propably some piece of a water pipe ... but .... well .... the look of it ....
I mean, they could have easily chosen a club or some straight piece of metal ....?
Tumblr media
Sherlock holding the key to his chains in his own hand?
How does a rainbow get into a dungeon .....
Tumblr media
I leave you to your own deductions. Thanks @callie-ariane for the scripts.
