so i wanna talk about this

in case you’re wondering, these are all tags pulled off of one anti-klance (and apparently anti-lance) post. and this isn’t even all of them. and these are mostly left by sheith shippers. 

frankly i think this speaks for itself, especially because this seems eerily similar to the nonsense that antis have thrown at me for shipping shiro with the other paladins. and before anyone says “yeah but at least we’re not sending death threats and doxxing users,” stop setting the bar for your behavior so low. just because you’re not doxxing and sending death threats doesn’t mean you’re not being an asshole. and that up there is called being an asshole to your fellow voltron fans. so let’s talk. 

i’m a multishipper. without any exaggeration, i have been driven out of sheith servers because i dared say that shitting on klance is mean and unnecessary. i have joined entire servers that were created specifically for getting away from sheith shippers who love to spend inordinate amounts of time talking about how klance is abusive, klance is unhealthy, klance is shit, klance shippers are shit, sheith is better than klance, people are delusional if they like klance better than sheith, and so on and so forth. i’ve had to start blocking anti-shaladins and anti-klancers because this is starting to get so bad. and based on the posts that are starting to crop up, people are noticing and getting fed up. 

once upon a time, sheith shippers demanded that klance shippers stand up for the sheith fandom and hold other problematic klance shippers accountable for their rude behavior. right now, i want other sheith shippers to stand up for the non-anti klance fandom and hold problematic sheith shippers accountable for their rude behavior. this bullying, bad mouthing, ship bashing, character bashing crap is running people out of this fandom and frankly it’s embarrassing. 

i don’t care if you don’t like klance, but don’t you dare start creating posts and spewing salt about how i and all other shippers are apparently deluded, idiotic, suspicious, and worthy of breaking a friendship with because they dare like a ship. especially as you simultaneously demand that people respect your ship in return. there is no hierarchy of oppression when it comes to fandom ships. it’s just shipping. there’s a very simple rule: don’t like, don’t interact. ship and let ship. treat others the way you want to be treated. they teach you this shit in kindergarten, and some of you are in your late 20s acting like goddamn children. if you spew hate, i have a problem with you. pure and simple. 

i really hope sheith shippers start speaking up about this because frankly it’s getting to the point where there are very few people in this fandom i feel i can speak to. and a lot of klance shippers and multishippers are feeling this way as well. if you cared about our comfort, you’d say something and fix your behavior.

Just saw season 8 of Voltron! Gonna be spoiling some things in this post so, uh, don’t read if you don’t want spoilers?

I had fun watching it and it’s definitely still one of my favorite shows. Of course I’m sad about the lack of a certain ship (of course I’m talking about Sheith), but I’ve kind of always been braced for it not being canon. So I’m not too surprised. Sad, yes, but not surprised.

I’m also sad about the lack of any big Shiro&Keith interactions. Cuz, like, what? You guys were so in each other’s business the last 7 seasons and this season, just… nothing? I’m confused. Maybe I missed them? I’m gonna have to do a rewatch at some point here.

I’m happy Allurance became canon! Even if it didn’t stick around. (I am salty they didn’t pull a “surprise! We only need to sacrifice one person to restore the realities, Allura, go back to your boyfriend” like they could have. Why didn’t this happen? I might write a few alternate canon fics after this.) Episode 1 was really cute and so was episode 7 (Day 47) and I’m not a big hetero shipper but all the Allurance was really cute.

I loved pretty much all the episodes - the first… 10? Up to the Knights of Light 2-parter, whatever episodes those were. I liked this. And Clear Day. Sorry, I binged the whole season just now and I have no awareness of what episodes are which. Actually, I think I liked them all except the last half of the last episode.

Episodes 6, 7, and 8 were my peek favorites, I think. That was an intense episode followed by two fun episodes. Episode 7 made me laugh so much, and I really liked how real the battle seemed? It was the lack of cinematic shots and music and it made it feel more real? I dunno, I really like that sort of thing.

The last 3 episodes were really intense and I was really into them and it was so emotional at times - god, I loved them. I also made the mistake of reading some Tumblr discourse before writing this so my memories of my emotions during those episodes are a bit damaged. Cuz everyone’s hating on this?

Like, I get it. It wasn’t perfect. But nothing ever is. Real life is never perfect. I don’t know what reality you’re living in that things are perfect but it’s not the real one. Everything felt accurate, like this was how these people would actually react. No, some people didn’t make the right or the best choices. But who ever does? When you’re in the moment and faced with a choice you have to make in a second - you don’t always get it right. This show did that and it felt real.

Stop putting Voltron on a pedestal. It’s about war and life and mistakes and living the best life you can. And I feel like it did a good job showing that. Even if we don’t like how some things turned out. That’s life.

And now back to me talking about the season. I never watched the trailer for this season, but I did see quite a few screencaps on Tumblr. I got excited every time I saw a scene I recognized in the show. Like, you would not believe. I was grinning and laughing and crying at times during the whole ~6 hours I spent watching this season.

(I watched the first 3 episodes from 7 am til 8.20 am, then episode 4 over the course of a couple hours because my mom kept trying to talk to me. Then she left (yay) and I watched 5 through 13 from 11 am til 4 pm. So this was an entire day thing for me even though the season was a total of 6 hours.)

I was really crying those last 5 episodes, it was really intense and insane and wow, I just really loved it. 

Allura’s sacrifice was super emotional, god, why did she do that - but I got a smile out of Lance’s new Altean markings. Very cool! I like that they included those. The “one year later” flash forward was not a cool move tho. Shame on you guys. But it gives us fanfiction writers the ability to fill in the blanks! Yay for Coran and Allurance angst!

Another not cool thing: the flash forward to... I want to say it was probably 10 years? Maybe 5. Something like that. The final time skip. Not cool. I want to know how all those things happened! I want to see how the relationships changed! Fanon and Headcanons are great and all but I want to know the real canon events!

Tying into that, I’m really disappointed that we didn’t get endgame Sheith. But the show isn’t about us, doesn’t have to include everything that we want. It belongs to the characters, and while Shiro didn’t end up with Keith (like he should have) he did get a happy ending! Even if I don’t know who the hell his husband is. That was a major achievement! A real homosexual kiss! Yay! LGBT rep! and all that. I wish we got more focus on this guy tho, so it didn’t feel so random. 

Here’s a new game. The Where’s Waldo version of Voltron season 8: Spot Curtis.

(Because apparently his name is Curtis. He shows up a lot? Apparently? But there’s literally no focus on him and how were we supposed to know he was important?)

(I image Shiro got to know him a lot more during the cut to the “1 year later” scenes, and also over the next 5-10 years to when we get those epilogue shots. They just never showed it and I’m salty about it. Who the hell is Curtis??)

(Also, this shows that Shiro definitely has a Type.)

Anyway. I love this show and, overall, I’m happy with this season. Of course I’m going to be reading Sheith fanfics for the rest of time, but I’m also going to be trying to get to know this new guy (whothehelliscurtis) and I’ll probably add... whatever the hell their ship name is to my list of ships, just like I did with Adashi. I ship Shiro with Happiness and if he gets that with Adam or Keith or Curtis, then I’m happy.

(Seriously, what is their ship name? I’ve seen Curo and Chiro but nothing seems set in stone? Of course it’s only been like 12 hours since anyone would have seen the wedding scene. Ship name possibilities: Takatis? Shurtis? Shirtis? Curashi? Cushi? Why is this guy named Curtis, there are no good options when merging Curtis with Shiro or Takashi.)

Oh! And speaking of the final time skip: it’s probably 10 years. Which means 11 years since the final battle. The fact that Shiro is still alive and well means his disease is gone! He’s going to live! Yay!

Also! To everyone complaining about the career choices of the characters in the end credits: It’s been like 10 years! It’s the future! I’m sure they stayed as pilots for a lot of those years! I’m sure they did other things before settling on what they did in the credits! And they have a lot of years after this to do other things! It’s just a snapshot of their lives! Calm down!

Ok, that’s all. This has been my super long rant about Voltron Season 8. 

Now, I’m going to avoid discourse like I did with season 7, and if anyone complains to me I’m going to play Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” at max volume.

TL;DR: I liked season 8 and believe its flaws reflect real life and how humans work during times of war. I still like this show and always will. I’m sad my OTP isn’t canon but that’s what fanfiction is for. I’m happy for Shiro and hope he lives a long happy life. Thank you JDS and LM for giving us this amazing show!

Regarding Allurance

Soooo since many people are confused, and even angry, about Allurance, I wanted to do a breakdown about the past and possible outcomes on what appears to be Lance and Allura’s relationship!

As far as it goes right now, literally EVERY SINGLE SHIP has gotten a moment. Plance has had the hand holds, ‘Don’t you touch her!’ and ‘Lance/Pidge, No!”. Klance has had the entire episode of when Sendak’s crystal corrupted the Castle of Lions, Lance almost stepping down as the Red Paladin, and Lance trying to bolster Keith’s confidence as a leader. Kallura has had the entire Taujeer episode, and the arc of Allura coming to terms with the fact that Galra does not come hand in hand with evil. Shallura (even tho Shiro has been confirmed gay, therefore, Shallura might be dead) has had Shiro and Allura being the actual parents of the daycare that is Voltron. Sheith has had literally Keith and Shiro’s entire relationship, especially Keith telling Shiro he’s like a brother to him, and he loves him. Punk has had Pidge and Hunk geeking out over nerdism. Alluratt (is that it?) literally gives Matt an entire anime as f sequence declaring his love to Allura. Hunay is self-explanatory. And so on and so forth. The point is, is that finding ‘proof’ for ships doesn’t work much anymore. There is proof on all sides, and at this point, and just focusing on proof, we’d end up with a ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ ending where they all just end up dating each other. But we know this is not going to be the case, because we’ve only gotten two confirmed LGBTQ+ characters in Voltron, and the managers would definitely red light a huge polyamory relationship. And I highly doubt the majority of Voltron’s target audience would be would be happy with that.  Also, sorry about a long paragraph on all ships, this post is supposed to be about Allurance.

So, my point is that all relationships have been explored to some extent, and by purely looking at what the showrunners have given us, we have an impasse with over 12 different forks in the road as to who could end up together. Focusing on the current content might not work anymore for any ship, except for Allurance.

It is very clear that Allura has started to reciprocate feelings for Lance, due to the self-explanatory blushing on both sides in season 7. Plus Veronica teasing Lance about it, even if it is extremely cliché and a dead giveaway to what the writers are hinting at. Not to ignore Lance dying for Allura, and her bringing him back to life.

The writers are making explicitly clear that they aren’t ‘just friends’ anymore. However, as they explore this road, the end game could be a lot more complicated than we thought.

So, here are my thoughts:

1. You’ve probably heard this a million times, but many people are complaining that Lance is Allura’s rebound. Which I totally see.

2. Lance has not has his own ‘moment’ in the show yet. Pidge has had it with her family, Keith has had it with Leadership, Shiro has had stepping up as the pilot of the Atlas+ literally the entire show (because he is a tortured soul), Allura has had many episodes to show getting over the loss of her father+Altea, and Hunk has had an arc throughout season 7 where he really steps up to the plate as the glue of the team. Lance has not had a serious arc yet, but it has been heavily hinted at in season 2 where he describes his teammates. He goes off on a tangent, and says. “Maybe I don’t have a thing. I mean, the team wouldn’t have me stick around if I didn’t contribute, right?” He’s also had his moment of almost quitting Voltron through feeling like he is a replaceable cog in the wheel. + possible foreshadowing in the Voltron book.This kind of characterization and the growth required to overcome this personal issue is much more than a ‘and the moral of the story is: ___” episode. So, we know Lance hasn’t tackled this arc in his story yet. So we only have season 8 left for this!

Which brings me to my next point.

3. Lance will become aware that he is, in fact, comparable to Allura’s rebound. And with his whole inferiority complex, that would hit hard. His entire flirty and cocky nature is about making himself feel less inadequate. He is basically walking insecurity. This is doubled, by being constantly compared and reminded of Keith back at the Garrison. Knowing that, to someone he loves, he is only the second choice, would really force his confidence issue to light. It would probably take up an entire 1-2 episodes to cover this topic. By forcing the hand of his insecurities using Allurance as a part of the driving force, we could deduct that Allurance has a possibility of not working out because of this, and it could only exist for the sake of plot and Lance’s road to maturity and true confidence.

4. A bonus point I would like to make is the possibility of Lance not getting with anyone at all. Lance’s whole thing at the beginning of the series and throughout it is impressing the ladies. A big part of his characterization, would either be finally going after someone he really cares about, or stepping away from dating all together. I mean, what an arc that would be, amirite?

5. So, if Allurance is purely a plot point in Lance’s character arc, we have the possibility of it not being the end game. The whole purpose of Allurance could be giving Lance confidence after the issue of being ‘second best’ comes up.

6. Another complaint I’ve been seeing is that Allurance’s relationship is only now beginning to develop, in the second to last, if not last, season. Many people are like: “So, are you kidding me??? When it comes to relationships, it is always developed from early on, not rushed! This is forced!” And while I agree, the Voltron crew are pro-fess-ion-als. They write for a living. They have lovingly created the characters that we adore on screen. We can talk all we want about Voltron’s writing ‘weak points’, but at the end of the day, this is a kids show. Some points are going to be weaker. But, my point is, if they want to genuinely develop Allurance in season 8, they are going to do a fantastic job of it. Can you imagine them delving deep into the two’s relationship in the last season? And getting attached to Allurance as a pairing? It gets me excited thinking about the possibility of a nicely developed relationship.

I mean, except for if they go forward with Kacxa. In which case, all hope is lost. But that is a whole other topic.

In conclusion, Allurance is going to be a thing. At least for a couple of episodes. Whether it stays or not is going to be the big question. And if it’s canon, great! It was already hinted at (but not developed!) at the beginning. If not, great! It’s part of further developing our Cuban Boy’s character.

What do you guys think? Please keep negativity to a minimum. I know that shipping can be controversial in the Voltron fandom, but I’m only hear to get my thoughts out. Not to fight anyone, and not to diss/kill someone else’s ship.

A little salt, A lot of Sheith Meta

Alright... So there’s just a lot of things that have been on my mind since the big reveal. (Updated with even more meta!)

Beware there are some s7 spoilers under the cut. (And since I wrote this instead of the prompt for sheith month today I’ll use this as my entry instead @sheithmonth​ if it is considered appropriate / next)

So as probably most everyone in this fandom knows by now, Shiro has been confirmed gay with the release of the first episode of season seven. As I explained in a previous post, Shiro being confirmed queer has made me beyond excited, simply on the basis of what incredible representation this is. 

However, once again I have heard a bunch of people (honestly... probably not actual sheith shippers) yelling “Sheith is dead” because of Shiro’s ex-boyfriend. Well, first of all, it is an ex-boyfriend according to the vld staff. And, while I will admit I have not seen the full episode nor will I seek out any more spoilers, I can still say with full confidence that Sheith is not dead. Which, honestly, I think most Sheith shippers would agree.

(Also, side point: a ship cannot even “die” like... the point of shipping is looking at two characters and thinking they would be interesting together regardless of canon.)

Anyways, I’m just going to go ahead and break down exactly why I actually believe Sheith to be closer to canon than ever before.

I usually never have hope for a canonically queer ship, mostly because I’ve learned to not expect it. Voltron, however, has amazingly made me hope again. And I even dare to hope that the canonically queer ship will also be my otp.

However, my bias aside, there is plenty of evidence pointing to canon sheith. Starting with the entirety of season 6.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I was shipping Sheith from seasons 1-5 too. Keith’s very first scene in the show is his rescuing Shiro, followed by tenderly touching his face while saying his first word of the show: “Shiro?” Following this scene we see how Shiro and Keith have the deepest bond of the group and are consistently looking out for each other. In season two we have Shiro trusting Keith to succeed him as leader and the Blade of Mamora trials with the famous “Your friend desperately wants to see you.” Since then we’ve gotten hugs, tender looks, and promises of: I’ll save you “As many times as it takes.”

Despite all of this I still doubted they would become canon, but then season 6 came along. 

First of all this post which is not mine but goes in to all of this a lot, talks about how many of the romantic scenes expected for other ships happened for Sheith instead. Things like: Sheith’s bond being the focus of the season, Keith’s mom picking out Shiro because Keith told her so much about him, backstory, sacrificing themselves for one another, and even an emotional confession of “I love you.” Honestly, if we were looking at any sort of heterosexual ship, they would already be considered a couple by now.

Additionally we have seen some incredible parallels for Sheith as well. Both with Sheith and Keith’s parents and with Zaggar. On one hand we have the very similarly animated rescue scene between Keith’s dad and Krolia vs Keith rescuing Shiro in episode one. On the other hand, we have the very telling jaw-dropped reaction of Shiro with Keith and Zarkon with Honerva.

And now, with the new information from season 7, it adds a whole other layer to Shiro’s reaction. We were joking about his stuttering and complete focus on Keith during that scene was him being a gay disaster. But the truth is he is a confirmed gay disaster. Literally, how else do you explain that scene? Plus, while I know the 2 year jump wasn’t some move by the showrunners to address the “too big of an age gap” claims, I still think it’s an important moment for Shiro. Shiro has never treated Keith like a kid in the series, and they have been shown to be best friends and reliant on each other since the beginning. But I genuinely believe that this moment was when Shiro realized that Keith really has gotten older/more mature/(hotter). “You really have changed,” Shiro said. 

And, if we take the parallels a step further (and while some people may call it a stretch, I personally really enjoy this one). We all know how Lauren and Joaquim also worked on Legend of Korra, another show that pushed for lgbt rep and that ended with canon Korrasami  The ending scene of which had a very visually similar theme repeated in Voltron. A pillar of light between the two queer characters.

But, regardless of all the observed parallels and incredibly heartfelt moments, we now have an interesting problem(?) on our hands: the introduction of Shiro’s ex-boyfriend Adam. I will reiterate that I have not actually seen the new episode in full (and correct me if I’m wrong), but a lot of the episode’s focus is on pre-Kerberos backstory.

Within this backstory we meet Adam, someone Shiro loves and cares for deeply, to the point that they were practically (if not actually?) fiances. However, as Shiro deals with a chronic illness and pursues his dream of piloting in space anyways, Adam leaves Shiro and tells Shiro that he will not wait for him.

Now, from this information alone I immediately believe that Adam is meant to foil Keith. Where Adam (for whatever reasons, good or bad) could not stand by Shiro through everything, Keith has repeatedly proven he will do anything to protect Shiro and stay by his side.

Additionally, from a narrative standpoint, it really wouldn’t make sense to make Shadam endgame. Now it is true that anything is possible in 26 episodes. It could turn out that Shiro will have his reconciliation with Adam on Earth and they will get back together. In the event that this happens, (and if it happens in a way that is healthy and is good for Shiro), I hope everyone will support the relationship regardless of ships. Because that will still be amazing representation!

However, I doubt that would happen. Simply because we have never heard of Adam before. If the vld staff was shooting for this big queer couple for a while, why only mention him in the last 26 episodes? Especially since a majority of the episodes of season 7 (I assume) will be them just trying to get to Earth, leaving very few to flesh out a Shiro/Adam story. From a story-telling standpoint Shiro should have been talking about or mentioning Adam from the start to more easily introduce this couple to the audience. However, Adam only gets brought up when Shiro has to face the reality that he is making it back to Earth and there is a chance he will see Adam again.

[Edit: Plus, just think of how much has changed since Shiro left. He has been imprisoned for a year by the Galra and forced to fight, had his arm replaced with a robotic prosthetic, been experimented on, has become part of a universe-defending team fighting in an intergalactic war, literally died, spent who knows how long as just a consciousness in a giant robot space cat, and then revived and given the memories of a cloned version of himself. He’s been through a lot. And who knows what Shiro’s gone through better than Keith?

Adam, on the other hand, has most likely had no idea what happened. If I assume this correctly, for this entire time Shiro’s been gone, Adam has believed Shiro to not only be dead, but responsible for the Kerberos mission’s failure. I would assume when the mission was called Pilot Error, Adam would have had his fears confirmed: by taking the Kerberos mission despite being ill, Shiro put his life and the crew’s lives in danger. I honestly cannot even imagine how Adam must have reacted when he heard the news. I honestly can’t wait to see how he reacts to Shiro being alive. 

After everything they’ve gone through, will they really be able to rekindle that old flame so easily?]

Additionally, we can argue that season 6 was one of the biggest Sheith seasons of the series. We got that two year age jump with Keith that has Shiro reacting like the disaster gay he is. Plus, Shiro’s reaction to Keith saying “I love you” (while not reacting to the “you’re my brother” line) still sticks with me, along with Keith refusing to let go and accepting to fall to his death with Shiro. We got Keith astral projecting himself by screaming Shiro’s name and then cradling Shiro in his arms in the last five minutes of the season. And to now immediately follow up that season (that was so focused on Shiro and Keith’s bond) with a confirmation that Shiro is gay? I really don’t think that’s a coincidence.

[Edit: Not to mention how I’ve seen multiple posts going around talking about the different dubs. One being the German dub’s ich liebe dich, which is apparently for a stronger/more profound love than ich habe dich lieb. And of course, the Japanese dub’s aishiteru which is also much deeper than the more commonly used daisuki. Like, if you’ve ever watched subbed anime, confession scenes will almost never use aishiteru. Aishiteru is rarely used because it denotes a deeper love akin to saying “I am in love with you from the bottom of my heart.” It is almost exclusively used between romantic partners, and rarely (if ever!) used between family/friends. The choice of aishiteru over suki/daisuki is honestly incredible.]

[Edit: Also, something I wanted to add before but couldn’t find a source at first: I found this article by DenofGeek from this past February very intriguing. It said that quote: 

“Montgomery adds, ‘When we set out to make this show we wanted to make one where no one character was solely defined by being in a relationship.’ She’s quick to clarify that the Avatar and Korra characters were of course incredible and fully formed characters themselves but, ‘when we really looked at what was at stake with this show (Voltron) the relationship or romance aspect of it just didn’t feel as important as the work that they were doing to save their universe.’ Both showrunners don’t rule out the possibility of it happening down the line, but only if it happens naturally within the story. ‘We’re not going to try to just put it in there for the sake of needing romance in the story,’ Montgomery explains.”

The parts I bolded were what stood out to me from this article/interview. The showrunners have never wanted the focus to be just on relationships. The focus has, and always will be, on these characters defending the universe together. However, they will include romance if it happens naturally within the story. I really believe that if we were looking for a naturally developing relationship in the show it would be Sheith, and not between Shiro and some brand new guy (or at least new to the audience). In order to truly convince us Shadam is a good ship, the showrunners would have to focus on it a lot in the remaining two seasons. Why go through that effort when they could instead develop the relationship Keith and Shiro already have in the show?]

Not to mention, despite the introduction of Adam in the episode, the episode’s main focus was still on Shiro and Keith. The new episode has yet another Sheith hug, Keith worrying over Shiro in a pod, and many pre-Kerberos scenes (without Adam) that feature Keith and Shiro’s history. (Oh and I just got spoiled this next screenshot, there is apparently a rainbow above Keith and Shiro in one scene?! Also, it’s yet another example of a sunset as a romantic backdrop between them.) In other words, I really believe that Shiro will ultimately have his reconciliation with Adam, but they won’t get back together. Shiro will probably end up having feelings for Keith instead. 

Although, I can’t know that for sure and anything could happen. But then, I can’t help but go to stuff outside of the show as well. 

The staff have repeatedly shown support for Sheith or at least the bond between them. We have the famous “Shiro Loves you Baby #he’s looking at Keith” from Chris Palmer:

The staff’s support of the ship, in both fanart and interviews has been incredible. This post has an entire masterlist of the support the staff has given Sheith or their strong bond.

But, anyways. Overall, regardless of where the story heads I will always ship Sheith. If the staff decides that Shadam is the way to go for positive representation I’ll happily take it, but it doesn’t end my love for Sheith.

Honestly though, I think Sheith’s chances of becoming canon are better than ever before and I’m so excited to see how these last two seasons play out.

Klance fandom and Sheith fandom tearing into each other right now is the inevitability a lot of us have been saying since Day 1: You can’t fight toxicity with more toxicity. Using “Oppression” Olympics mindset to justify bashing other ships and hurting other shippers has not and never will be a step toward making this fandom a better, more positive space.

“It’s just venting.” Venting does not take a considerable amount of effort to make a high quality gifset to paint a ship in a very specific, unhealthy light for the sole purpose of being spread around to piss people off. And even if it was just venting, it got spread around, and it hurt a lot of people. Have we not been constantly saying on this hellsite that “intent doesn’t matter, if you hurt someone, you apologize?”

I’ve said this on Twitter but many “sensible” Klance fans are multishippers. We have absolutely received the brunt of antis’ abuse over ships. Even Sheith fans have constantly thrown Shidge and sometimes even Shance under the bus to make Sheith look better when arguing against antis for the past two years. Klance fans who stood up against antis received death threats for being “nasty shallies” and “pedophile apologists” and even put on blacklists despite not being into Shiro ships at all. Ex-antis who use their voices to speak out against anti behavior are stalked and doxed by the people who used to be their friends and know personal information about them. So you could say “sensible” Klance fans/multishippers have been caught in the crossfire of this shipwar for the past two years.

Even now, some people I’m following who are basically saying the same things here have received death threats and abusive anons. Just for asking fandom to be nicer to each other and calling out this Klance ship bashing for the hypocrisy that it is. So thanks for proving our point??

What good has that gifset done? What good has bashing Klance done? Stick it to antis? Honey, antis don’t give a shit what you think and they never had. If they did, they would’ve backed off a long, long time ago. If they cared about what anyone else thinks, we wouldn’t be having this problem in the first place. The only people getting upset are people who are just trying to enjoy their ship in peace just like Sheith shippers. Again, what good are you doing? All this is doing is just taking your frustrations out on fans who’ve done nothing to you but, actually, a lot times, tried to support you. That’s toxic. And hypocritical. Listen, I understand the frustration against Klantis, I really, really do. They’ve done extremely horrific things. I’m a Shidge shipper if that says anything. And I ship Kallura. ALL of my Kallura art has unnecessary comments from Klantis. Hell, one of my stores was taken down over a report because it featured Kallura art.

And I ship Sheith. More and more by the day. I love making Sheith content and I think it’s a really fun ship (just right now, Allurance has the forefront of my attention thanks to this zine). I adore the relationship between Shiro and Keith, and I think canon is setting it up to be something beautiful if not heartbreaking (gimme that sweet, sweet pain). And before I got into Sheith, I stood up for Sheith fans time and time again as redrobokitty. Because how Sheith was being treated was so incredibly wrong and unfair.

Sorry that sensible Klance fans don’t have much of a platform in this fandom. When we speak out against antis, we don’t get a whole of notes or gain a lot of traction. When you’re blocked by Klantis on one side, and blocked by everyone else because of your unapologetic love for Klance on the other, doesn’t really leave a lot of room for a post to get very far does it? Also, lbr, people in this fandom would rather reblog drama and wank than someone saying “hey how about we not do this?” But it’s not for a lack of fucking trying, I can tell you that much. We are trying. We just don’t have the platform like BNFs and anti-antis do. No one listens to us. And they turn around and dismiss us for not “speaking up”.

Instead of getting all defensive, can we just recognize that asshole behavior exists in all fandom circles, and maybe like not spread it further? You can’t fight toxicity by being toxic yourself. And you don’t have to be an anti to be a toxic person. The bar for treating your fellow fans with decency and respect is a lot higher than doxing and death threats.

Ah my sweet anon, as much as I want to understand humanity, let alone the social interactions of the microcosm that is fandom, I would tell you.

I cannot claim to know but my speculation/theory is that sheith shippers are abandoning the ship because it simply no longer interests them and if Adam and Shiro interests them more simply because it was formerly canon and they want to play with the idea that they get back together then more power to them they can have fun with that. As far as I’ve seen, staff has been pretty consistent that they were broken up and that relationship has reached it’s end, otherwise I’d like to see the multiple sources that claim from staff that it has not reached its end in which case it creates confusion in the current written narrative with how little Adam is actually on Shiro’s mind compared to Keith. There’s also the Voltron tweet that can be misleading about “meeting Shiro’s significant other” if you weren’t at SDCC to see the episode yourself (I wasn’t but I follow ppl on twitter that were there to see the episode). But with the context we have, that’s over and it was nice while it lasted. 

Is it sad that they’re leaving the ship? Maybe but I don’t have any mutuals that left sheith for Adam and Shiro and the people in my circle generally dislike, but do not hate and understand Adam for the ultimatum that he set for Shiro but we’ve known Shiro for 6 seasons and Adam for roughly 30 seconds and if we’re supposed to love Shiro for everything else like his leadership, his compassion while knowing the fact that his sexuality is a facet of the greater gem he is, then Adam is just a little facet of what makes his story and the narrative is that we sympathize with him more than Adam and in my experience, I usually side with my best friend I’ve known the longest in a break up, not the person they’re breaking up with that I’ve known for a few seconds.

Think of it this way in this interesting mirroring metaphor: Some of those sheith shippers going to adashi/shadam whatever they’re calling it have decided they’re going their separate ways from those of us sticking with it the way Shiro and Adam have, following their own paths and dreams they want to go after. In the end it’s sad but you’ll be happier just doing what makes you happy, Adam is probably happy doing whatever he’s doing, and Shiro is happy and fulfilled his dream and more and has a best friend to support that the way Adam could not and refused to.

Voltron Fandom Rant( long)

The Voltron Fandom. A fandom that in just a little more than a year, has become a heaping cesspool of hate, one of the shittiest and most vile fandoms, leaving other past problematic fandoms like Homestuck, Steven Universe, and Undertale in the dust (at this rate). Full of people yelling and screaming the words “pedophiles!”, telling others to harm or kill themselves, just constant back and forth bickering. And all over one thing, something that isnt even an important factor of the show, barely 5%. Shipping.

Every fandom has their ship wars, but nothing like this. In all the years I’ve been in fandoms, I’ve never seen anything as terrible as this. When you meet other Voltron fans outside the internet, you honestly dont know if they are gonna like you or judge you completely, cause you might ship something they hate. So far, being in the cosplay fandom, I’ve met mostly really chill and nice fans, luckily not running into one anti.

Just the other day, we got confirmed ages of the characters, something I thought from the creators we weren’t going to ever get. And tbh, I wish we didnt.

As much as I’m happy for the Keith x Shiro fans with Keith being confirmed 18 (tho some antis are finding ways around that to still claim its illegal or some shit), what about the others? Especially the Shidge fans. The Shidge fans now, from what I’ve been confronted with, are distraught, terrified, nervous, and we barely are getting consolation or support from the Sheith (Shance and Shunk too) fans that we supported against the antis. And I think thats a shame. Our ship is as valid, as according to the creators, even if Pidge is 15. As I’ve claimed several times before, look at ErenxLevi, and how much that ship is popular with twice an age gap. And even if the age gap makes you uncomfortable, you can always ship it in timeskip, AU, or aging up terms. Thats completely fine and okay, because they are fictional and not real.

I don’t care for Sheith, but I will stick up for any Sheith fan against the antis anyday. Because thats what we do, we stick up for each other even if we don’t like the ship..

I wish they never released the ages. Imo the only good thing that came out of those leaked pages was Pidge being Italian.

Anyway, moving away from that, you antis. I...don’t know even where to start with you bastards, You ARE the ones who have made this fandom such a vile and disgusting place, you ARE the ones who make people scared and bully those who don’t agree with you, you ARE the GALRA. Fandoms are supposed to be enjoyable, supposed to be a haven where you can happily share and talk to others that share the same love of something you do...but not like this. This isn’t fun. You shouldn’t be scared or be sad in a fandom over other fans treating you horribly and making you feel bad over something in the fandom that brings you joy. Shaladin shippers, ARENT PEDOPHILES. Sheith, Shidge, Shance, ALL OF THEM. ALL SHIPS ARE VALID, AS CLAIMED BY DIRECTORS LAUREN MONTGOMERY AND JAOQUIM DOS SANTOS.

Let this discourse end. Its going nowhere. But what am I, just one person in this crazy fandom. Maybe things will calm down as the show progresses, maybe another thing will come along that the antis will jump onto. But I just had to get this off my chest.

this whole season felt different, the tone was off, every episode had a different vibe. it was messy. the writing left a lot of holes. Altean Lance was fuckin weird. Keith... is supposed to have grown to enjoy having company but this whole season his attitude was completely changed around in terms of hanging out with everyone. Ok, well don't say I didn't warn you. A couple terms first: * Shipping - Derived from "relationship." Imagining two characters being romantic. This is usually accompanied by producing fanworks that depict those characters in a romantic situation. The relationship can be canonical or not, and the fan works can be everything from PG handholding to XXX vore. (If someone ships Kylo Ren/Rey it means they like to think of them in a romantic/sexual relationship.) The pairing itself is called a ship. * Shipwar - When shippers of two different ships attack each other over their ships. * Wank - common fandom term for drama * Antis - People who invest energy in attacking shippers of a particular ship, and employ arguments of morality of social justice to do so. * Fandom in this case refers to a particular subset of fandom that is traditionally female oriented, focuses a lot of male/male pairings, and often chooses fanfiction as its primary output. There are 2 big things to remember as you read this. 1) Some people are SUPER SERIOUS about fictional characters getting it on together, and 2) they will use any means at their disposal to stop people from doing it wrong. Imagine the ridiculousness of PS vs. Nintendo fanboys ratcheted up to 11 and you get an idea of how some fans approach shipping. Generic ship wars have been happening for a very long time. If you thought Harry Potter deserved to fall in love with Draco Malfoy and Ginny was the devil you were in good company and would gather together to get those dirty Ginny fans run out of the internet. Bad actors have always been around to exploit this, either to troll, or to worm their way into popular or rarefied circles. [The Ms. Scribe Story](http://web.archive.org/web/20140401225619/http://www.peeep.us/0418dc98) is a good example of what the old school shipwars could produce as far as wank was concerned. And in it you see the seed of what would become the modern "Anti" mentality, which is framing yourself as a victim of bigots to win sympathy points, all for the purpose of forwarding your preference of who bangs who. This portion of fandom has always been closely linked with genre fiction, since many people in the latter are engaged in the former. Genre fiction had and still has some issues concerning race, sexism, and homophobia, which is par for the course in almost all media everywhere. In 2009 those issues came into contact with some MASSIVE WANKERS, leading to what continues to be known as [Race Fail '09](https://fanlore.org/wiki/RaceFail_%2709). A lot of people don't know this, but the term Social Justice Warrior started to pick up usage around this time, to define some very particular, very caustic people who were destroying communities by claiming the moral high ground and attacking anyone who had an opinion even slightly different from them. A few of them are listed at that link. It quickly became apparent that pointing the finger and claiming -ism! was an efficient method of silencing certain people. Fandom, however, remained relatively insulated from this fail, which was spreading mostly in certain websites and in professional circles at the time. In '09 the internet was still relatively decentralized, and fandom was dispersed among various livejournals, archives, webforums, and so on. This limited the damage one movement could do, because just because Winterfox was shitting up one site didn't mean there was another that hadn't escaped unscathed. Enter web 2.0, and specifically, Tumblr. As the internet began to coalesce into platforms that aimed to monopolize user engagement, the separation between communities grew more and more difficult. Before, if you wanted to see Kylo Ren and General Hux having kinky tentacle sex you went to a community specifically for that and didn't have to worry about those people who had their own community for Rey and Finn. But now, all the shippers were converging into a single pot, a pot that had no filters, no privacy functions, and actively wanted everything to be shared as widely as possible. Another massive change that happened about this time is that the attitude towards kids in fandom had shifted. Back in the good old days a 13 year old understood that lying about their age was the price you paid to get your porn. The kids these days no longer have that mentality. They don't think twice about declaring themselves children on the internet. This will come into play later. Ok, as we near the present here's a quick review. * Ship wars are serious business to some people. * Screaming about social justice is a proven method of getting people to shut up. * There are some crazy people out there who will do anything to manipulate themselves into a position of infamy. * Everyone has slowly been squeezed into the same fandom spaces, adding pressure. * Children are fucking everywhere. When you combine all those elements what you get is this, some really loud ass motherfuckers who think that whoever can claim oppression and bigotry the loudest is the one who deserves to ship things the way they want, and there can be only one. There have been some reaaaaaallly bad fandoms for this, but since the OP is specifically about the age issue, I'm going to stick to that and not get into some of the ridiculous racism angles this has also taken. A lot of shows that fans like to ship for are cartoons, or shows that are ostensibly aimed towards younger audiences, but adults often are a big portion of the fandom. Ponybros are the more infamous version of this, but they are a bit of an outlier as they don't run in the same fandom circles as the old lj>tumblr fandom that is the source of this particular wank. Big targets of these conflicts include Welcome to Nightvale, Homestuck, Steven Universe, and the new Voltron series. When Voltron came out it got super popular among fandom. A lot of fic was written, and a lot of art was drawn. Since it's a show with a team cast, people were shipping a lot of pairings that shared a member, which is often where the worst of the ship wars happen. For example, two of the biggest ships were Shiro/Keith, and Keith/Lance. Now if you're a kid who ships Keith/Lance and haaaates Shiro/Keith, and you need to stop people from producing things involving Shiro/Keith, and you know accusing people of moral crimes is an effective tactic for this, it turns out your best option is to use pedophilia as a weapon. So people started insisting that Shiro had to be at least 20, and Keith had to be a minor, and shipping these two meant that you were a pedophile. No, it doesn't make any sense, but the people who do this are dead serious about this. They called themselves anti-Sheith (the pairing's "smushname") and went so far as harassing the showrunners for the exact ages of all the characters and tattling on professional artists for indicating a fondness for the ship to their employers. And if people push back and say you're being an idiot, you can throw that back in their face by saying that they are adults abusing minors while simultaneously endorsing abuse and pedophilia! 20 year olds started calling themselves children so they could position themselves in a place to abuse 22 year olds. Teens started declaring 30 the age in which all women should get off the internet and stop having hobbies. And all this was done because they didn't like a fictional pairing. This is by far not the only instance in which pedophilia was brought up as a massive reach to support attacking shippers of the wrong ship. One of the most absurd instances was spearheaded by a 30-something woman named graceebooks, a member of The Johnlock Conspiracy (another very deep rabbit hole) who actually harassed a rape survivor to tears, in public, because she preferred to have Sherlock topping John rather than John topping Sherlock, and even though these people share the same ship, and the SAME FICTIONAL CHARACTERS ARE INVOLVED, the TJLCers actually had the balls to make the claim that Sherlock topping John = pedophilia because John was being infantalized or something, IDEK. Both Voltron fandom and TJLC share this absurd notion that their "gay babies" will become a canon couple too. That's a whoooole other ball of crazy, but it explains why some people go insane over this. They genuinely believe that if they fight off the rival ships in fandom space the showrunners will reward them by making their faves kiss on the show. So that's the context. What then happened is that these idiotic arguments that were being used for ship wars were then adopted by young, stupid children who did not understand or care about the context, and saw only the arguments themselves, and took them as reasonable and good arguments, and believe in them completely. While most of the initial wankers were just cynically throwing shit at the wall and hoping something stuck to drive out rival ships, there are now a large number of people who believe in a moral code that came out of that. It's like watching a religion form sometimes. The end result is OP, who has bought into a convoluted logic process developed to legitimize the harassment of shippers, and is now trying to apply it to the actual real world, with predictable results.
