Jika saat ini kita sedang menikmati indahnya bertilawah atau menghafal Al Qur'an. Maka dari sahabat inilah kita patut memberikan rasa terima kasih kita. Penulisan, pengurutan dan pengumpulan Al Qur'an dalam satu mushaf tidak akan terpisahkan dari sahanat Rasulullah Zaid bin Tsabit Ra.

Ia termasuk kaum Anshar. Ketika Rasulullah pertama kali di Madinah, Zaid bin Tsabit masih berusia 11 tahun.

Allah telah menolong umat ini melalui kecemerlangan intelektual Zaid bin Tsabit. Namun, mungkin tidak banyak umat Islam yang tahu, bahwa dibalik kecemerlangan Zaid bin Tsabit r.a. terdapat peran cerdas seorang ibu. An-Nawwar binti Malik r.a., adalah ibunda dari Zaid bin Tsabit. Beliau seorang diri mengasuh Zaid karena suaminya meninggal dalam suatu peperangan ketika Zaid bin Tsabit masih berusia enam tahun. Meskipun demikian beliau mampu mengantarkan putranya tersebut ke derajat yang sangat mulia, sehingga Rasulullah Saw, Abu Bakar ra, Umar bin khattab ra dan Utsman bin affan ra mengangkatnya menjadi sekretaris pribadi sekaligus menggantikan mereka melaksanakan tugas kenegaraan ketika sedang berhalangan.

Kisahnya menjadi sangat menarik untuk ditelaah dan dipetik hikmahnya serta dijadikan uswah ketika muncul banyak fenomena dimana keluarga mengesampingkan peran utamanya dalam mendidik anak. Pendidikan disubkontrakkan pada satu lembaga dan berharap keshalihan dan kecermelangan anak muncul dari lembaga tersebut bukan dari rumah, dari tangan kedua orangtuanya terutama ibu yang menjadi sekolah pertama dan utama bagi anaknya.

Kisah itu dimulai pada suatu hari ketika langit Madinah dipenuhi oleh ghirah juang para mujahidin, Rasulullah Saw dan para sahabat tengah bersiap-siap menuju medan perang Badar. Zaid bin Tsabit ketika itu masih berumur tiga belas tahun, namun ia tidak mau ketinggalan dalam membela agama Allah, maka ia pun mengambil pedang sang ayah yang telah meninggal dan menghadap Rasulullah hendak mendaftarkan diri bergabung dengan pasukan. Dengan menyeret pedangnya yang berat, dan pedang itu jauh lebih tinggi dari Zaid bin Tsabit saat itu, dengan penuh semangat Zaid menghampiri Rasulullah, meski tidak sanggup mengangkat pedangnya, semangatnya sungguh tinggi. Akan tetapi, di dalam peperangan yang sesungguhnya semangat saja tidak cukup, postur tubuh Zaid serta usianya yang masih terlalu belia membuat Rasulullah Saw tidak bisa menerimanya untuk bergabung dengan pasukan perang Badar.

Mendapati dirinya ditolak masuk ke dalam barisan mujahidin, Zaid muda menjadi sangat sedih. Harapannya untuk bisa berkontribusi bagi tegaknya agama Allah dan keberlangsungan negara Madinah yang baru dirintis pupus sudah, ia pun pulang ke rumahnya dengan berlinang air mata. Sesampai di rumah, ia menemui ibundanya tercinta an-Nawar binti Malik dan berkata, “Rasulullah saw melarangku berjihad.”

An-Nawar binti Malik adalah seorang ibu yang bijaksana, ia paham betul bahwa di dalam jiwa anaknya sedang berkobar semangat untuk bisa memberikan sesuatu bagi agamanya, ia tahu dengan pasti bahwa putranya sangat ingin mengabdi demi tegaknya Agama Allah. Namun sahabiyah yang mulia itu juga mengerti dengan jelas penolakan Rasulullah terhadap anaknya. Zaid jelas masih terlalu belia untuk terjun ke dalam suatu peperangan. Lalu apa yang dilakukan ibu yang bijaksana itu? Simaklah jawabannya kepada sang anak,

“Jangan bersedih, engkau bisa membela Islam dengan cara lain. Jika tidak mungkin dengan jihad ke medan perang, cobalah berjihad melalui lisan atau tulisan.”

Ibu yang baik tentu tahu kualitas, potensi, bakat dan keunggulan anaknya. Begitulah an-Nawar binti Malik, ia tahu bahwa putranya memiliki potensi intelektual yang menjanjikan. Zaid bin Tsabit adalah seorang anak yang cerdas. Oleh karena itu, ia mengarahkan anaknya untuk lebih mengembangkan potensinya sekaligus sebagai hiburan bagi anaknya yang tengah kecewa karena belum diizinkan bergabung di dalam sebuah peperangan. Negara Madinah tentu membutuhkan orang-orang yang cakap beretorika dan lihai bernegosiasi, belum lagi kemampuan baca-tulis masih merupakan barang langka waktu itu. An-Nawar binti Malik tahu bahwa putranya sangat mungkin menguasai kedua kemampuan penting itu. Ia lalu meyakinkan putranya seraya berkata,

“Engkau menguasai Al Qur’an dengan sempurna juga bisa menuliskannya, ini jarang terjadi pada saat ini. Engkau telah banyak menghafal Al Qur’an dengan hafalan yang baik. Oleh karena itu, mari kita pergi kepada Rasulullah Saw dan kita akan melihat bagaimana kita bisa menentukan potensi-potensi ini untuk membela Islam dan kaum muslimin.”

Tidak hanya memberikan motivasi, pada hari yang telah ditentukan bersama beberapa orang dari kabilahnya, an-Nawar binti Malik mengantarkan Zaid untuk bertemu Rasulullah Saw untuk melihat apa yang bisa dilakukan anak itu dengan potensi yang dimilikinya. Mereka berkata,

“Ya Rasul, anak kami Zaid bin Tsabit ini hafal 17 surah dari Al Qur’an dan dia membacanya dengan benar sebagaimana ketika wahyu itu diturunkan kepadamu. Terlebih lagi, ia pandai membaca dan menulis. Ia ingin agar dengan kemampuannya tersebut ia bisa dekat dan menetap denganmu. Jika engkau mau, simaklah bacaannya.”

Rasulullah Saw pun mempersilakan Zaid menunjukan kemampuannya, setelah mendengarnya beliau Saw terpukau dan mengakui kehebatan hafalan Zaid. Tidak cuma itu, beliau juga sangat menghargai kecakapan baca-tulis yang dimiliki remaja belasan tahun itu. Tanpa mempermasalahkan lagi umurnya yang belia, Rasulullah Saw kemudian memberikan amanah pertama kepada Zaid, amanah yang menjadi tonggak jihad pena yang tetap dia laksanakan bahkan setelah Rasulullah Saw wafat. Rasulullah Saw bersabda kepadanya,

“Wahai Zaid, pelajarilah kitab Yahudi untukku karena aku tidak bisa membuat mereka beriman kepada apa yang aku katakan kepada mereka.”

Tugas mempelajari kitab Yahudi yang diberikan kepada pemuda itu bukan hanya berarti ia harus berjibaku dengan diskursus perbandingan agama, ia juga harus mempelajari bahasa Ibrani, sebuah bahasa yang sangat penting ketika itu. Misi mendalami ideologi dan bahasa kaum Yahudi itu dilaksanakan dengan baik oleh Zaid bin Tsabit ketika ia berusia 13 tahun. Dalam waktu singkat, Zaid bin Tsabit berhasil menyempurnakan misi tersebut, bahkan ia mampu berbicara, membaca, dan menulis dalam bahasa Ibrani seperti penutur aslinya.

Potensi yang dimiliki Zaid yang diperkenalkan oleh ibundanya mampu dibaca dan dimanfaatkan sebaik-baiknya oleh Rasulullah Saw. Para sejarawan mencatat bahwa Zaid diperintahkan oleh Rasulullah untuk mempelajari bahasa Suryani. Bahasa ini termasuk bahasa yang populer pada zaman itu. Bahasa Suryani dapat dikuasai oleh Zaid kurang dari dua puluh hari. Sejak saat itu Zaid bin Tsabit aktif sebagai penerjemah bagi pemerintahan Islam Madinah, penulis wahyu, penulis surat, peserta perundingan antara kabilah-kabilah atau negara asing dengan negara Islam Madinah. Sekali lagi, semua itu mulai dia lakukan ketika ia berusia 13 tahun. Beliau tetap tekun melaksanakan semua amanah itu hingga masa kenabian berakhir, beralih kepada masa Khulafa Rasyidin. Bukan hanya handal di dalam bidang di atas, Zaid bin Tsabit juga dikenal sebagai sahabat yang ahli dalamfaraidh dan imam fikih penduduk Madinah.

Peran an-Nawar binti Malik di dalam kegemilangan karir, amal, dan jihad intelektual Zaid bin Tsabit tentu sangatlah besar. An-Nawar lah yang mampu membaca potensi anaknya, mengarahkannya dan mendukung anaknya semaksimal mungkin. Ia bahkan mengajak beberapa anggota kabilahnya menghadapkan anaknya kepada Nabi Muhammad Saw, seorang kepala negara, pemimpin ummat untuk menunjukan kemampuan anaknya. Tentu hal itu membangkitkan kepercayaan diri putranya. An-Nawar binti Malik adalah seorang single parent, tetapi itu tidak menjadi alasan baginya untuk berjuang membesarkan putranya dengan prestasi gemilang dari tangan sang ibunda.
