Saw idol!Kaiba on my dash recently, so I needed to share this.

This song has been eating my brain for over a month as an idol!Kaiba song. Not just because of the lyrics, though trust me, they have strong Kaiba vibes, but also because of the very obvious DANCING WITH A HOLOGRAM. Because even as an idol, you can't keep this boy away from his tech.

Jou would be super hot in a rock or punk band. 😍 I'm not sure my heart can take it. I always loved the idea of him being someone who could sing, probably because his Japanese VA also had a minor singing career. Great AUs for hot and raunchy post-shows/gig hookups too hahaha. (I have a one-tracked mind.)

There's a lovely post-canon fic (WIP) called Idolized by Lafeae and MistressArafax that covers the scenario you mentioned where Jou has become an idol and Kaiba finds himself unwittingly a fan. Might be time to re-read that one.

Haha, it's true, Kaiba as a character, especially as he's often depicted in fandom, fits the actor niche very well--a tall, attractive man gunning for lead dramatic roles. Someone who cares about The Craft. He'd be terrible at a lot of other parts of the job, though, like doing promo or generally rubbing elbows and getting along with the cast and crew. But people will forgive a pretty face for a lot. And we should just count ourselves lucky that he's not overtly abrasive/abusive as he could be.

Pairing 1: Twistedshipping (Shadi/Maximillon Pegasus | Pegasus J. Crawford)

Propaganda: Shadi is a grief stricken spirit with no one to talk to and Pegasus is a lonely rich boy with time & money but no one to share it with. They've both suffered heavy loss and mad terrible decisions as a result. They've hurt people and are both people who are hurting. But they wear it differently; no one can see Shadi unless he allows it but Pegasus is a public figure. He must be seen, though no one can get close without his permission. The roles they play are so important to the people who the roles serve and yet they're always at a distance from the comfort of the people. All that to say, they should get to hug and be happy. Also the fan art is just beautiful. | Pegasus lamented how his heart was like the empty canvas he toted around half the world longing to fill, then immediately painted a portrait of Shadi and hung it up next to the portrait of his deceased wife. Pegasus clearly idolized Shadi for giving him the Millennium Eye, even though Shadi showed little regard for him, probably thinking of Pegasus as just another necessary step in moving fate along. I think it’s immensely interesting to explore how they both might grow around each other, and how they might recontextualize their shared past after spending more time together. Pegasus would start to see Shadi with something other than blinding adoration, and Shadi would recognize and appreciate Pegasus as a person and not a pawn. The ship has plenty of angst, but room for hurt/comfort and character exploration. And they both at some point, in Yugioh R and Dark Side of Dimensions, adopted a bunch of orphans and took on the role of a father figure; so there’s more fluffy AU potential, too.

I have an AU idea, based on an idea that I have.

So, we all know that in dark side of dimensions, Kaiba made a hologram of Atem. What if, somehow, someway. His spirit was able to hack into the hologram, and use it as a kind of secondary body?

And if that were to work, what would happen when his puzzle was rediscovered and solved in the virtual world by a newer duelist who happens to use the virtual world as an escape from the real world?

Only to end up releasing a world wide virus on accident, which can only be stopped by gathering the seven millennium items in the virtual world in order for the virus to stop.

I call it:

Yu-gi-oh: pharaoh’s Virus.

Yeah yeah, kinda cringe idea. But hey, who doesn’t want to see the beloved pharaoh return to the future and have to deal with not only a world wide virus and deal with the modern age of toxic masculinity, idol worshipping, problematic politics, and searching for a way to have a body of his own to protect his new friend..? I WOULD. I’d love to see atem confront one of those toxic masculinity sigma dudes and call him out on all his bullshit! :]

But also, you can put your own character into the spin of it! It can be a story of romance, angst, adventure, or of one’s identity! (Just PLEASE make sure if you’re going to do romance, make sure it’s a legal relationship. Do your research before you do anything!)

watching repo the genetic opera with @kaijous and reposting my silly ygo au idea:

kaiba sibs as successors to geneco really play into that sibling rivalry and backstabbing. i’m doing away with the whole father-daughter storyline (there aren’t any decent parents in yugioh anyway) and now it’s serenity up in her tower with her electronic eyes and the repoman’s a-coming. her mom keeps her locked up for her own safety, but she sneaks in and runs into her grave robbing brother joey and his two delinquent friends yugi and tristan while being hunted by the villainous repoman in the form of ryou bakura (who is maybe also their friend for the ~drama~). cue a run through the city to escape the repoman with the help of idol-turned-stooge tea and possibly seto kaiba, who fantasizes about burning geneco to the ground anyway. gozaburo would have to function as rotti in this, but the obsession with immortality, gathering of wealth, and abject selfishness to the point of legalizing murder for his own gain is so maximillion pegasus i don’t know what else to do about it. like in the show there probably isn’t really a happy ending here, but a promise of newfound freedom. also, they sing a lot of opera.

Well, it’s the end of the year, and I’ve already posted my last fic for the year, so let’s do my little recap now! According to Ao3, I wrote 227,293 words this year. I did try to write more original fiction this year, so that's not included in this count, but I think that's pretty good anyway!

Favorite fic written this year: I think this year it's my JJK Choso/Sukuna piece it'll probably end badly, but baby, give me your bad romance , because this was the first time I wrote a darker romance, and it was pretty fun! (Also, love a good rarepair).

Hardest thing to write: Hm, so One more time (and maybe you'll get it right this time) was pretty hard since it I had to do a time loop from the non-looping person's perspective, but also I think Adventures in Adoption and Falling into Throuples had its own set of difficulties, because I hadn't written a fic where the main pairing was a throuple before, and I also had to balance Chong Ming bonding with tiny Li Jinglong as well.

Most self-indulgent fic written this year: You would think that maybe it's My Idol Noticed Me and We Started Dating! since it features BOTH anime conventions and my favorite complicated boba tea store, but in the end Love is a Grumpy Hedgehog and a Sunshine Gege has to win out since I specifically took one of my favorite WTA side characters and gave him both a Shangde Peak boyfriend and a happy ending.

Original Work published this year: The Mage and the Forest Prince was published in OFIC Issue #1, and The Green was published on Trembling with Fear! (I may or may not have another piece as well that was accepted, I still haven't gotten the contract yet, so we'll have to wait and see)

Fic Plans for Next Year: Well, I'm in the midst of a Schoolmance AU 2ha Xue Meng/Mei HanXue fic that I hope to finish the beginning of next year, along with a draft of a Yugi/Kaiba piece! After that, I want to do that Gaara/Naruto I Ship My Adversary x Me AU piece I've been talking about for awhile, and then after that, who knows! Maybe finally start posting that Actor AU 79 fic I have parts of. Oh, and I of course have some more WTA fic and Tianbao fic saved up for next year as well.

Enstars AUs, 1-5

Okay so I signed up for a 5k AU fic challenge, and I've got 17 enstars AUs to sort through and figure out which one I want to write.

The Non-Idol AUs

[Because Enstars is Enstars, this is not quite the same as a mundane AU. Things are still just as set-up in canon, there's just no idol industry or idol activities involved]

Valkyrie, Non-Idol AU. - For this, Shu is an installation/multimedia/theatre artist who puts on big walk through shows, Mika does weird found art about recontextualizing the cute as grotesque and things that would be tossed out and rubbish as things of value. Meanwhile, Nazuna was Shu's high school muse and he resents himself for not having his own artistic voice but loving the praise he gets for working with Shu and knowing his technical chops are good and his knowledge of motion, music, sound, and mass-appeal are good but he doesn't have a vision of his own. He ends up having a complex towards Shu, where he simultaneously wants to split from him and fails to do so because of his fears of his own inadequacy and follows him to university instead where he has to find his own voice as an artist. Pros: I can write all of valkyrie pretty well, their voices are easy, even in AU their motivations are simple to grasp. It would be easy to write in under 5k words and wouldn't require a ton of set-up. Cons: Research

Fishcult, Non-idol AU. - If the cast hadn't gone to idol school Kanata wouldn't have gotten out which makes all the fish cult stuff go pretty different as compared to canon. I need to decide a POV character, but I'm leaning towards Kanata due to how limited his POV is, with his knowledge base being really small it's easy to write the world widening around him. Madara and Souma are good foils, in that Madara and Souma are both devoted to Kanata, but Madara thinks the whole God thing is full of shit and Kanata should get to live a human life, while Souma doesn't see the issue with what he was raised to think. Pros: interesting, weird, definitely very canon divergent while exploring canon's set-up in a different way, works with the word limit. Cons: I need to read Stella Maris and the lookback story where Kanata's mom tried to have him kidnapped. I'm behind on fishcult canon, and I should read at least one thing to brush up on Souma's voice. I also haven't written for any of the fishcult before.

Rich kids, Non-idol AU - By the Rich Kids, I mean the ones that are known to run in the same circles before going to Yumenosaki together, so at the very least that brings us Eichi, Hiyori, Tori, and Tsukasa. Rich brat politics and policies. I think the thing to figure out here is what Eichi would want to do with his influence if he didn't get super into idols like he did in canon. I keep thinking about his stupid suicide theme park and I'm like maybe he is just early canon Seto Kaiba in this AU. But setting aside Eichi, these are all characters that are to some degree characterized by isolation. Tori and Tsukasa's social difficulties are because they weren't well-socialized as children. Hiyori is the most socially adept of the bunch when he's not intentionally being awful, but his tendency towards picking up strays feels kind of like it could come from that sort of lack. As Hiyori is the frivolous second son who has decided to be useless so his brother is the clear pick for heir and is kind of supporting him in that way, it'd be funny if stuck in insular rich kid land he ends up getting attached to another one of the canon rich kids, since Tsukasa and Tori are canonically like really in eEichi's corner and Hiyori can't stand Eichi. Is he able to wear them down? Is it a sort of rivalry in which Hiyori is trying to win over their affection but instead the younger two are stuck idolizing Eichi who is what they should want to be while Hiyori is more genuinely personable and enjoyable to be around when they're not at very public social functions? I feel I'd pivot the whole thing on the Hiyori-Eichi relationship and divide. Pros: I love Hiyori, and I can write a pretty good Eichi. Cons: I think I need a better idea of where to go with this. At least a better idea of what exactly Eichi is up to.

Sakuma Ritsu + Mao, Non-idol AU - the vampire-centric au!! My real motivation here is figuring out a way to make Mao interesting to me. Like in canon he's easily the most boring member of the cast but that's because like, he's Trickstar's people person. He's the one who knows how to be a properly socialized human being. but it doesn't really present interpersonal strife for him other than he is so tired, so overshadowed, and so overworked. But it's not a conflict so much as a difficulty, if that makes sense. Because so much of the Yumenosaki student body is really fucking weird, there's not a ton of pressure on Mao to divorce his weird friends. Mao, who wants ultimately to be liked and is sort of a people pleaser. He's very go with the flow, and will sacrifice himself to maintain social harmony. In canon, with Trickstar, this makes him a pretty good tsukkomi to comedic effect, but it's not dramatic. But non-idol AU. Ritsu, a vampire. In a more mundane piece of the enstars world, I can see that being an actual piece of conflict in the social fabric. Usually Mao's refusal to acknowledge the vampire thing because "Ritsu is human" is a statement not about Ritsu's physically not being a vampire with a weakness to sunlight and all that, but rather a statement about Ritsu being a person. But if the rest of the people were more >( about Ritsu being "chuuni" while Ritsu is actually suffering because of his physical condition, to what degree can Mao actually cover for that? Basically, I want to put more pressure on the gears of that relationship. Early in canon in the... band event? the student festival one in ES! there's some conflict around this, but it feels like more of a misunderstanding from Ritsu than any genuine pressure being placed upon Mao. Mao is a rock in canon. Solid. I want to see that shaken, at least a little! I also thought a bit about Sakuma Rei and Keito in this AU but honestly everything I want from them is covered by the Crossroads + Vampire Shogun events so I'm chill. This would be for the younger Sakuma brother! Pros: Vampires. Cons: Mao

Twins + Organized Crime Non-Idol AU. And by organized crime I mean Ibara, because if the Godfather and Gatekeeper stuff wasn't idol stuff it would still be crime stuff! But we've got a pair of homeless kids on the street who are both smart and survivable and codependent and canonically the twins glom onto Ibara for their own advantage and to annoy Ibara and it's great. If we take them out of the idol industry and have them do this anyway, CONGRATS TWINS, YOU'RE NOW CRIMINALS. I think this would be fun because Yuuta's got his like, I want Hinata to feel despair at other people because then we'll be the same again! He'll prioritize us over all others because he'll realize he can't depend on others! This AU gives Yuuta a leg up on Hinata in terms of their dueling world-views, and Hinata more to grapple with in terms of his brother's grudge and malice against the world. Especially if we assume the Hinata suicide attempt still happened in this world. But they've also got Ibara who had a similarly terrible childhood in their corner, and while Ibara plays the villain he tends to actually default to selfish altruism. We'll provide these services so people think better of us. :) He's the cynic but he is playing the part as much as it is true. I think it'd be a really fun fic for just really dissecting the three of their different world views. While also getting to write about fun crimes. Let the twins do crimes! Yuuta can enjoy it for real and Hinata can have so much internal screaming about it! How much sabotage to his brother can he get away with to protect his brother from himself! Pros: I love the twins and Ibara. Cons: I have never written any of them before.

About the idol Kaiba Rivalship AU

like I think after that first concert, Yugi’s becoming a fan. He thinks he’s having a crush, but others would also have celebrity crushes too right?? He thinks it’s weird having this kind of Feeling to someone who would never know or even care he existed, but he’s content with just watching Kaiba on stage, like a good fan would, he supported his works. Kaiba has become an Inspiration to him, someone he admired (also, like- he’s Hot too so hhHHH)

He MAY have Noticed how they would lock eyes- or how Kaiba would point to his direction longer than usual, maintaining his Gaze just long enough- Yugi *wonders* but he would Never Ever Dream of it- Is that Kaiba Noticing Him?? Nah, never, it’s probably the fanservice! His general direction was just the Lucky Ones! ...right? RIGHT??

L: what’s the weirdest AU you’ve come up with?

Somehow I feel like we could be here all day with this one. If there’s an AU, I’ve probably thought of it at least once, unless it was crossover, and even then, I did a very strange crossover waaaaaay back when.

There’s actually a toss-up: one is a Yu-Gi-Oh crossover I did with House M.D.

Plot: Kaiba is a wealthy benefactor to Princeton-Plainsboro hospital because House was able to diagnose Mokuba with an ataxia syndrome. While he’s there, he has a seizure and the team has to find out what’s wrong with him. I don’t recall what sort of disease he had, but at one point they thought it was Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, what is commonly called Mad-Cow Disease. It wasn’t that, that was the ‘scary’ diagnosis before they found out the real reason. Unfortunately, I don’t know what the real disease was.

This story is a beautiful combination of my nerdy fandoms, and if I was actually a doctor, I might have been able to write it convincingly.

Second: An Inuyasha stockcar/NASCAR AU

Plot: Sesshomaru is a driver who gets into a really bad accident on the track and ends up paralysed (I think?) and the power of love and hope from Rin helps him heal, and also there’s a big battle on the racetrack with Naraku at the end because there’s also magic still in this world, but I don’t remember anything other than what I told you. I was 13/14. It was not good.

K: Whats the angstiest plot you’ve come up with?

One that wasn’t shared and I exclusively kept in a notebook when I was a moody teenager ~16.

Kaiba is also an edgy teenager, he’s dealing with his literal internal self still talking to him. It was a very amateur look at depression and how e vis ourselves that more or less climaxed with him having a chess match with himself, and every wrong move he made, a corrosive goo was eating? him, threatening to let the “bad” version takeover. I think now I might be able to manage the plot about like….self-consuming depression and how it reflects on the outside better, but really it was an edg-y version of depression, self-hate, suicidal overtones with no actual plot other than suffering. Nothing like…tying it up.

It did spawn a poem I still remember:

Q: Any discarded plot lines/scenes/stories?

I had a whole ass story idea with three different chapters or so, set in Edo Perios Japan, wherein that Jounouchi is possibly a supernatural entity of some sort, but he’s thrown into a daimyo’s castle jail because he’s an unwanted foreigner possibly spreading Christianity which was very…unwanted at the time. They also barely let in any foreigners besides the Dutch.

The truth of the plot was that he knew a Hyakki Yagyō—a ghost parade in Japanese folklore—was due to pass through the town with the castle. He was something like a witch who could sense these things, perhaps even a half-demon (hadn’t decided), but his rambling just came off as crazy. So eventually, he was going to get just Kaiba and Mokuba out of the castle before it caught fire, mostly because he can convince the brothers and become a little enamoured with Kaiba, but also because Kaiba and Mokuba are under rather brutal conditions from Gozaburo, the daimyo of the castle, who pretty much would feed his sons to the wolves for a shred of power from the shogun.

So yeah.

Alternate Universe of Choice:

Cardfight!! Vanguard

Premise:

Cardfight!! Vanguard is a card game anime, a less dangerous version of Yu-Gi-Oh!. There are no supernatural abilities except for psyquallia and alien invasion.

There are several versions of the anime: Original series, G series (the direct sequel), V-series (the reboot), IF (a magical girl AU), Shinemon Arc (prequel to V-series), and Overdress (new generation).

I'll be focusing on the Original Series because that's what I'm the most familiar with.

I'll be transporting two characters: Lynette and Kiara, since they are sort of connected and rivalshipping can be a thing in sports animes so anyway

Lynette Mitchell

For starter. The Mitchell family is unfortunately no longer a myth or murders. But they are a family of card fighters in this AU. Their family restaurant has a corner for card fighting and Lynette would often play with the customer if requested.

Instead of fox ears, she wears her hair in twintails. Lynette would mostly be the same except she won't be having any powers...at least from the public knowledge. In truth, she has a power: psyquallia, the ability to 'see' the future of the duel. When Lynette uses that power she's the most sadistic person you'll ever meet. But this power can only be activated during a card duel. (This is her Doom or Death Flag)

So. In Vanguard, there are several clans that you can choose from. And I think that Lynette would be great using Oracle Think Tank.

Since her nine-tail fox origin is related to Japanese mythology, so surely there's a connection with Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi.

Oracle Think Tank users are build-up strategists and focus on stacking. Some cards allowed you to take a peak the card on top of your deck for advantages, an amount number of cards in your hand and can give your power boost. This can reflect on Lynette's yandere mode, she's sweet like the card designs, but with a flick of a switch, she'll destroy you with all her builds up.

Kiara Winston

The Winston family in this universe is a game developer ala Kaiba Corp. Their main goal is to develop a system that can have the player experience card duel in the greatest level of entertainment, like a virtual reality where the players can fight side by side with their card units.

Kiara is mostly the same. She's the heir to the cooperation, putting her higher than the rest of her peers. She originally studies in a private school before making an agreement with her parents to attend public school, coincidentally, the same school where Lynette goes. Because of her wealth, she's more popular than Lynette, but still being kind and not a mean girl.

For her clan of choice, she would be perfect using Bermuda Triangle.

Her siren theme match with the clan mermaid pop idol theme. Plus, this is my favorite clan design-wise.

Bermuda Triangle gameplay is like an idol: calling and pulling them back on the stage. Some units get power when they are summoned back to the field. I think this can reflect Kiara of how even though she's from a higher rank family, she's willing to step out and sing her heart out loud.

Personality- megan is a very kind but fiery person who has strong opinions and can be very protective of her freinds. She has a temper and it tends to get the better of her. She sometimes can be abit more on the harsh side sometimes, unlike jaden who tries to handle things peacefully. She secretly gets selfconsious about being the darker twin but tends to push it down.

Dislikes- crowler (who doesnt), rude obelisks who look down on slifers
