#20: Yasmin Hernandez @yasminhernandezart #afrolatinastoknow *** This morning I wake wanting to shout out a beautiful spirit!Brooklyn-born and raised artist Yasmin Hernandez' work is rooted in struggles for personal, political and spiritual liberation. She explores these themes through her paintings and mixed-media works, portraits primarily, that weave storytelling through layered images, text and calligraphy. Of course we met at a museum. The day we met she taught me about Pedro Pietri and his significant role and contributions to the #Nuyorican movement. I had the distinct honor of interviewing her ten years ago for my story on Afrolatinos and have loved her and watched her soar ever since. This incredible mother of two decided it was time to plant her roots back home, she has since returned to her beloved Puerto Rico and is doing amazing work on the island. Of her work some of my favorites are the “Soul Rebels” series which exhibited at el Museo el Barrrio and her amazing mural of Frida Kahlo y Julia de Burgos, the “Soldaderas” mural can be found in Spanish Harlem, East Harlem, at the Modesto Flores Community Garden. Today I am sending prayers to my sister who lives in Moca, Puerto Rico. I pray for her people. I pray she is safe. I pray that she and those struggling get all the help they need. Yo check out her work! Support the arts! Buy a piece! Artists like Yasmin are the ones helping to preserve and celebrate our people, our history and our legacy! 👊🏽🙏🏾🌊🌪⚔️🇵🇷 *** #afroboricua #brooklyn #afropuertorican #artist #painter #eastharlem #visualarts #yasminhernandez #afrolatinasrock #iamlatina #afrolatina #afrolatinx #idpad #ourstoriesmatter #unapologeticallyblack #myblackisbeautiful #africandiaspora #afrolatinos #latinoheritagemonth #afrolatinosfilm #caribbeanwomen #afrolatinadiary #womanist #mujerindigena #guerrerastriunfadoras #guerrera

#19: Christy Martinez #AFROLATINASTOKNOW *** Her resistance to white-washed feminist rhetoric in academia is just one of the things I love about her! Several years ago we worked together for an organization that serves girls in the Bronx. I was the elder in a space filled with brilliant twenty somethings... I will not call her a millennial because I feel like folks use certain terms to be dismissive, condescending and just plain fucking ageist. What I learned from this womyn, 20+ year’s my minor I am eternally grateful for. She’s a seer. A healer. She saw some things. Things she didn’t like and voiced her opinions OFTEN! One day after being fed up of seeing how our urban youth were being used, invisibilized and exploited for photo opps with the “cute brown and black kids!” Christy bounced. She was done. And I soon followed. Let’s not sleep on these young feminist/womanist coming up they are brilliant and forces to be reckoned with. Please check her out at AfrolatinaDivina.com @thechristyx this WOC is absolutely beautiful, a gifted writer and someone to watch! I love her dearly. #mytribe *** #negra #dominicana #afrodominican #writer #blogger #harlem #afrolatinadivina #christymartinez #afrolatinasrock #iamlatina #afrolatina #afrolatinx #idpad #ourstoriesmatter #unapologeticallyblack #myblackisbeautiful #africandiaspora #afrolatinos #latinoheritagemonth #afrolatinosfilm #caribbeanwomen #caribbeanwriters #afrolatinadiary #womanist

#12: ISABELLE MAMADOU ~ #AFROLATINASTOKNOW *** Isabelle was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo to a Spanish mother and a father from the Central African Republic, Isabelle and her family moved to Spain in the 1990s. The Rwanda genocide as well as armed conflicts in the DRC shaped her interest in human rights. Remember the name Isabelle Mamadou!!! She will absolutely be famous in the world of activism, social justice and human rights. Isabelle has dedicated her life to defending the rights of people of African descent. She is the first Spanish woman selected to participate in the United Nations Fellowship Program for People of African Descent. She is responsible for organizing the first ever, Dia Internacional de la Mujer Afrodescendiente, International Day for Women of African Descent, which I had the honor of delivering the keynote and had the distinct pleasure of screening the Afrolatinos documentary in Valencia, Spain where Isabelle lives. Most days you can find her working for the NGO, Movimiento por la Paz (Movement for Peace). Isabelle is passionate about advocating for the rights of African migrants in her country, she coordinates the organization’s programs for immigrants and ethnic minorities, specifically in the areas of humanitarian aid, education, awareness, citizen participation, legal advice, employment integration and gender-based violence prevention. Aside from all the incredible work she does everyday, she is a beautiful human being. I am grateful to call her sister and friend. @isabellemamadou *** #Isabellemamadou #movimientoporlapaz #Daughtersofimmigrants #Spain #espanola #african #congo #mujernegra #activist #unitednations #afrolatina #afrolatinx #idpad #ourstoriesmatter #unapologeticallyblack #africandiaspora #afrolatinos #latinoheritagemonth #afrolatinosfilm #caribbeanwomen #afrolatinadiary

#11: YOSARA TRUJILLO ~ #AFROLATINASTOKNOW *** I met this woman at a river. She’s one of those blessings #ochun sends you as a spirit guide on this earth. How does an attorney become an entrepreneur? I remember sitting with her at a diner when she told me she would be opening up her own studio and that she call it the Sweet Water Dance and Yoga Studio. She’s a mother, a healer, an afrolatina with tremendous vision who named it and then made it happen. She has mastered / is mastering the art of reinvention. It is not easy opening up a business and keeping it open… and we are talking about keeping a studio open in the Bronx! She’s a medicine woman… healing our communities through, wellness, dance and exercise. Her doors are open to fathers and daughters, women healing sexual trauma, and her justice work is through movement. WE MUST KEEP MOVING! And so today I choose Yosara because we need to support more women of color owned businesses. Get your pole dancing on! Get your namaste on! Get your salsa on! Let’s support our people! Yosara te adoro <3 thank you for the work you do. Maferefun #OGGUN! #8: AMARA “LA NEGRA” #AFROLATINASTOKNOW *** When I decided to share my list of #afrolatinastoknow I did so because it was important for me that our little black and brown girls, high school girls, college girls see themselves reflected.
