Allow me to put on my clown makeup lol. So I didn't realize JLH was supposed to be with Eddie. But now that conversation she has with Buck in 4 makes so much more sense when she pushes him into Carlas direction because she points out how people like herself (Maddie) understand the system.

Ergo of course Evan Buckley became the nurturing love interest for Eddie, not Maddie. It's science!!!! Plus it allowed them to bring Carla back.

Hi Nonnie! I'm happy to bring up this stuff! XD I always find it fascinating to consider how things are put together behind the scenes of a show...

And yes, I absolutely think that as soon as they realized they weren't bringing Eddie in as a Love Interest for Maddie, they needed to tie him to someone else on the team in a way that would make him meaningful to the audience. And I guess they decided, well, if Eddie can't win the heart of one Buckley, then... ;D No, but for real, that conversation in 206 where Maddie says, "he is so cute" and Buck immediately thinks she's talking about Eddie, but it turns out he was mistaken, that she was referencing Chim, but in the process Buck exposes himself as the guy who think Eddie is so cute? I 100% think that was the writer, Juan Carlos Coto, winking at the whole process they went through with switching up who Eddie's emotional anchor on the show is going to be... ;)
