i moved and it’s been the worst three days of my life.
the new flat is kinda a lot worse than i expected. there’s a dodgy cupboard that smells awful and gives me sinus issues, one of the neighbours apparently chain smokes indoors (evidence of which was missing when viewing the place), i can’t get my router to work AT ALL, none of the lamps i have work with whatever 1950s bullshittery is going on in the ceiling (neither the pluggable NOR the old sokeripala style work) and i’ve had a lot of trouble with managing everything by myself.
honestly counting days to when i can gtfo of here without losing my deposit.
(note to self: next time you move you need help the days prior to the move (packing) and with the final cleanup of the old place)

I've had to do a few "computer things" recently (installing UI tweaks to Windows 11 to add back some functionality that Microsoft removed from previous versions; installing an SSD to replace the HDD in my desktop, which made everything perform better than new; run the old HDD as a pluggable external drive; other things I can't remember).
...and it reminds me of the 90s when upgrades were all commonplace through hacks or even legitimate means, instead of just buying a new computer every 5 years. it was like driving a sports car with standard instead of a boring sedan with an automatic transmission. I love the hands-on feel to it. I love remembering how to be knowledgeable about this kind of thing.

SO many great med students literally crash and burn once they reach clinicals because they have zero empathy or emotion and are just in it for money or privilege. i truly think an all-in-all GOOD medical professional can’t ever be substituted by Ai because 99% of patients are just looking for a Human to talk to.

I think C actually needs only rather simple surgical improvements to make huge strides in modern usefulness and best practices, and to regain and increase its position as "portable assembly" while becoming a much better "high level language" for writing bigger and more complex code:
Minimal structured concurrency primitives. Modern computers are highly parallel and out-of-order. Compilers can often convert code into SIMD instructions, and generally transparent parallel execution pairs well with things like loop unrolling, but the compiler can't always deduce this, and C code has no way of explicitly communicating it.
Minimal structured allocation primitives. If you are given dynamically allocated resources, you should be able to hang it on the allocation tree along with its deallocator function, and then never think about cleaning up any resources other than branches of the allocation tree.
Minimal "error tree" or "multi error" primitives - a clean way to accumulate multiple concurrent or sequential-but-not-fatal errors.
A standard pattern for "cross-cutting concern" objects for passing configuration and behavior of ubiquitous cross-cutting concerns like timeouts, cancellation, logging, metrics, and so on, which lower level code has to actually drive, but top level code ought to ultimately control.
Standardize a way to plug arbitrary things into the standard I/O interfaces - for example, code that takes a file handle should be able to take a pseudo file handle which just writes to an array in memory.

None of these have to involve changing the language itself - all of them can be done at the library level - although if the compiler can assume standardized semantics for those libraries, it can do more to generate optimal code.
