#if we applied the same standards in the home as we do in commercial/industrial environments we'd have a lot more serious issues

Okay, how ridiculous are the comments on food shorts on FB? Literally any time a girl with false nails is making something, half the comments are about how gross she is. For...making food with long nails???
Or the people who tell girls (even without false nails) to wear gloves when they're cooking. If they don't they're disgusting and nobody should ever eat their food. Literal 🤮emojis.
Who in the actual fuck wears gloves to cook at home? How do they think women with false nails eat or feed their families? Gloves and short, polish-free nails are only necessary if you're working in a commercial/industrial environment. Because you're exposed to a wide variety of germs, you're preparing food for a longer period of time, there's a much greater risk of cross contamination and you don't want to endanger the public.
Are there actual people these days who legit put on gloves to cook for themselves in their own homes???

How to Use House Washing Cleaner
Keeping your home clean is important for the overall beauty and value of your property. Dirty surfaces attract fungus, mold, mildew, and other contaminants that can cause damage to your house. These materials can also be very difficult to remove with regular cleaning methods, such as scrubbing or hosing down. Fortunately, professional exterior cleaning can eliminate these contaminants and leave your home looking new again.
House washing cleaner involves an environment-friendly chemical process that destroys bacteria and debris. This can safely remove biological elements from your house without damaging the surfaces of your home, and it is safe to use around children, pets, and plants. This type of cleaning can also be more effective than traditional pressure washing because it removes dirt and debris that has been buried in the surface of your siding or gutters for a long time.
Unlike standard pressure washing, which uses high-pressure water to blast away surfaces, house washing is conducted at much lower pressures, below 500 PSI. In addition to the lower pressure, soft washing includes a salt based cleaning product that does most of the work, cutting through grime and leaving your surfaces bright and shiny. These products can be used by hand or with a power washer, and they should be applied in the correct manner to achieve optimal results.
Before you start the wash, prepare the area to be cleaned by relocating any potted plants and other items. Remove or cover any outdoor light fixtures, spigots, or air conditioning units that may be in the spray path. You should also close any windows or doors and put away your shoes, doormats, or anything else that could get bleached or wet. Finally, you should turn off any electricity to any areas that will be sprayed.
Once you’ve prepared the area, apply the House Washing Cleaner through the venturi system on your water blaster using the chemical nozzle attached to the end of the gun. Start at the bottom of your house and move your way up, working on one section at a time. Doing this will help prevent soap and debris from running down to areas that are still dry, which can cause streaking.
After you’ve finished the first section, apply a second application of your cleaning solution and continue with the same procedure. Rinse with a moderate volume of water from the bottom of the house, moving up and down to ensure even coverage. Rinsing the entire surface of your home is very important, as it can remove any remaining chemical and soap residue and make it easier to see any spots that need attention.
The low-pressure cleaning process is also very effective for removing moss and other stubborn bioaccumulative substances from the roof of your home. This can help extend the life of your shingles and protect them from future damage. Moreover, the special formula used in these cleaners can kill mold and mildew, and it prevents them from regrowing for months, giving your home extra protection against the elements.

Journal: Final Reflection
Tumblr media
The fashion industry has complex links to many other sectors, including manufacturing, advertising, raw material processing, transport, and retailing. The immense profits to be gained in the retail industry give rise to the desire to engage in unethical practices. When suppliers, distributors, designers, or customers are exploited or treated unfairly, fashion industry executives have an ethical duty to improve the situation.
Within Fashion Ethics and Culture course, we were given the opportunity to explore the breadth of creative, aesthetic, and social/cultural expression of design through the lens of ethical and historic considerations – as it is and how it needs to change, the role of the MENA region and its relationship to fashion media.
Tumblr media
As a student of DIDI, I felt the same link and inspiration between the Fashion Ethics and Culture course and my vision of how I want to be as a future designer and how I should change the current fashion industry status quo with my future career path. The course creates a creative paradigm for learning ethical fashion design through the lens of ethical and historic considerations. Students are introduced to fashion history, cultural criticism, contemporary culture, and the diversity of representation including ethical considerations and perspectives.
In my opinion, this course plays as a moderator between all other fashion courses we study and extend to other courses with depth like sociology and design histories and theories to link and emphasis all courses material in a dynamic way. We covered various subjects relating to Body Image Problems, Fur Trade Issues, Cultural Hegemony and Appropriation, Consumer Over-consumption, Environmental Effects, and Concerns, Advertisement Conflicts, Brand Name Forgery, Sweat Shop Working Conditions, and Exclusiveness and Injustice Issues; that simultaneously vary from micro to macro scale through lectures, group activities, open discussions in class, and individual presentations.

I enjoyed the above-listed topics and guest lecture discussions we had this semester, but certain to a whole new way of perceiving the world. I would love to deepen and expand my knowledge on the technology and circularity of the fashion industry future as well as focus on modest fashion and ethical practices and success and failure aspects of the Modist business experience. Whether through merging my learning outcome within this semester to my nest fashion studio or final thesis.
Here's my list of the most meaningful subjects for me and some of the highlights of my recent blogs on these topics:
Tumblr media
ATCAC-Disrupting the Fashion System
ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Atacac is a Swedish fashion studio that Jimmy Herdberg and Rickard Lindqvist created in 2016. Atacac is designed to disrupt the current fashion system. Atacac is like a laboratory for developing ideas and principles. Then they work as consultants sharing that with other brands to improve their design. The other way they work with other designers is what they call Share-wear. When they release a new product in their online store, they also offer the 2D pattern and the 3D model of the garment for free download. This builds a community of home sellers and independent brands that use their patterns and designs. In certain terms, you can do whatever you want. There is a Credit Common Licence connected to the Share-wear which means you can use it commercially in any way you like, and you can make improvements to it, But you need to give credit back to Atacac if you use it commercially and market the product. You also need to make your development available for other people to keep developing further.
For me ATCAC is a brilliant business module example that is trying to blow the entire system to the ground, I loved how I saw ATCAC embodying every principle, I have been learning for the past 3 years. This blog post and the investigation behind it gave me hope that I can succeed in doing something different with my future dream brand.
Tumblr media
Innovative Fashion Marketing
Stretchy Kids’ Clothes Petit Pli gets a growing identity
A sustainable fashion design example that offers apparel that evolves as the wearer grows older has an innovative branding that sounds like “more human” and “less professional." The idea is to reduce the waste of apparel and save parents’ money as children progress up a range of sizes in the first three years of their lives.
It needs time and education to promote meaningful behavioral change. We assume that we are too late for much of our generation. We assume, though, that we are just in time for the next era of LittleHumans. The brilliance of the brand strategy is in anchoring on the opportunity where new parents and young children are more open to improvement and learning than any other part of our community. They do everything not only to promote constructive behavioral improvement but also to make it as seamless as possible.
Marketing as a term became cliché of how much brands are using it without actually making the right –positive impact on their users, within this blog post example of how marketing approach could be current, supportive and extending the brand value to further stage where the client loyalty will be granted due to that extended value, this reminded me of applying the product-service systems methodology, where it's not only the brand responsibility to produce and market a product but they innovate different approaches to extended their after-sale services and product value to emotionally engage their clients.
Tumblr media
Empathic Design Process
Empathy is the core of the entire process of Design Thinking. Putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes reinforces our ability to interpret information, and lets us understand how other humans perceive the world around us.
The realm of fashion design is shifting from an external focus on the industry, or an internal focus on integrating technology, to an empathetic focus on people. While it’s not too difficult to rally people around this general idea, it can be hard at first to understand how to translate it into tactics.
I ask myself as a designer, how do we make a good connection between a fashion worker and a customer? My solution to this question is to make fashion employees the hero of the story, create brand ideals around them. Plan company modules to be a win-win for staff and stakeholders. As designers, we should reconfigure how the framework is giving back to the societies through which we work. I expect, as a future fashion designer, to build a secure working environment that will help better the lives of single mothers in Egypt. By offering comprehensive educational opportunities and curating future working talents. The Empathy Concept process will be incorporated not only to understand the consumers but also most critically, to understand the true needs of the heroes behind my future brand.
Tumblr media
Technology & future of Circular Fashion
Fashion has always been a major hub for innovation — from the invention of the sewing machine to the rise of e-commerce. As technology, fashion is both forward-looking and cyclical. At $2.2 T, the apparel industry is now one of the top sectors in the global economy. Nowadays, apparel technology is rising more than ever. From robots that sew and cut clothing to AI algorithms that anticipate style patterns, to VR mirrors in dressing rooms, technology automates, customizes, and speeds up every aspect of fashion.
In the optimistic scenario, the future will be led by innovators and collaborators, the industry will leap forward in developing digital passports for clothing that carries an internationally recognized digital asset trigger that could be accessed by designers, retailers, recyclers, and customers alike. This type of standardized infrastructure and labeling approach means that not every brand or approach provider has its own patented approaches, leaving customers stuck in the sea of things to consider. In this way, the future of fashion technologies could truly unify the industry around common practices that would make circularity more visible to everyone.

How "Plant" Is Designing The Future Of Food And Education
CONTENT SOURCED FROM FORBES
Karim Giscombe is one of those quiet revolutionaries. Meeting him in the exclusive Spring Place members club in Tribeca in NYC, he cuts an unassuming figure, stylish and low key. He speaks with a measured intensity, his eyes watching you to see if you’ve understood the full gravitas of what he is attempting to do.
This former Bank of America Merrill Lynch director (his LinkedIn Profile calls himself a ‘reformed capitalist’) has embarked via his new venture Plant on a crusade to feed the world (using the power of schools, technology and branding) and create a new category which he dubs ‘Agriculture as a Service.' When asked why he’s doing it, his response is simply, “Everybody’s gotta eat.”
Tumblr media
Karim Giscombe
First some context: The global demand for food is rising exponentially and will reach all-time highs by 2050 as the population approaches 10 billion people - and agriculture is not prepared for that. There are many efforts underway aimed at potential solutions and Controlled Environment Agriculture (indoor farming as it most commonly labeled) is taking center stage because of the many benefits of this growing process. If the goal is to find the balance between resources and production, right now it seems clear that the future of food must be indoor, local, energy efficient and infinitely scalable.
The business of food is changing and forcing the incumbents to respond to the new dynamic.  Amazon acquired Whole Foods, while in Europe Tesco and Carrefour have launched a NATO-style alliance to increase purchasing power, Dell Computer has partnered with vertical farm operator AeroFarms to better understand crop data, and Wendy’s recently announced plans to only purchase greenhouse grown tomatoes beginning in 2019. Other notable mentions include moves by industry leaders such as Tyson Foods, Bayer, Hormel, and Nestle.
Investment has also gained momentum seeing the opportunities, with names like SoftBank, Google Ventures, and KKR placing big bets on the future of agriculture. William Blair & Co. has dubbed it “the AgTech Revolution” and Goldman Sachs has said the growing market may be worth $240 billion by 2050.
Giscombe and the team at Plant are taking an innovative approach looking at under utilized land in and near city centers and applying cutting-edge technology to modernizing food production and distribution - while re-imagining public education at the same time. This first-of-its-kind Public/Private Partnership model is a combination of equally ambitious Infrastructure Development and Social Design projects that have the potential to change many narratives.
“Plant is a platform solution.  A service provider operating high-tech greenhouses that can produce and deliver a wide range of fresh, post-organic fruits and vegetables at competitive price points, locally.  We’re unconstrained by land availability in most geographies and even with a starting footprint of 6 million sq. ft. per market, we’re just scratching the surface. Solving the production problem is only a part of the challenge; there are numerous improvements needed to the supply-chain itself.  This is our focus. It’s the holy grail of retail known as the “Last Mile” and this is where we believe we can have the most impact. This is what On-Demand Agriculture is all about. This is what consumers want. There is no reason to limit our thinking,” Giscombe states. "It’s about resources, balance, and most importantly- people.  We believe in building systems for people, not around them.”
Plant’s operation is carbon neutral and more environmentally sustainable, using concentrated solar power and hydroponic systems to refine a process that already out-performs traditional agriculture.  Nutrients are delivered through a treated water system and there is no use of agri-chemicals such as pesticides or insecticides and food safety measures control who and what enters facilities, reducing the risks of contamination and food-borne illness.
Proximity to urban centers makes it possible for them to optimize produce for quality and taste in lieu of shelf life and providing year-round access to fresh produce.
It's not just the hardware - but the software that’s taking the game to a whole new level. Giscombe says “It’s not widely understood that Big Data is now an integral part of agriculture and that the two will be inextricably connected going forward.  When we tell people we’re in the data business there’s this look of confusion at first, but after a while they get it. To be the best at our core service business, we made the decision to partner with the best in component providers early on. One of our key partners is iUNU out of Seattle.  Their crop management and analysis system LUNA, uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to monitor the health and progress of all crops under cultivation allowing us to detect growth down to the millimeter and create 3D models of plants to improve growing recipes — the light, water, temperature, and nutrients — with each new planting.  In other words, we’re collecting and synthesizing a lot of data.”
What may be the most exciting element of the work Giscombe and his team are doing though, is Plant for Tomorrow, #P4TMRW, the not-for-profit research and development initiative the company has launched to collaborate with School Districts and educational institutions. Starting with middle-school grades, the initiative provides access to relevant and in-demand skills (technical and humanities-based) for more students at the peak of their developmental curiosity.  There is no cost to the schools as the initiative has been designed to be self-sustaining.
Plant-operated commercial farms on district-owned land (up to 1 million sq. ft.) generate revenue from produce sold to distributors within the predetermined local service area. “It’s not really a solution if we can’t reach everybody. Outside of school, there’s still a community that needs to eat. Our produce makes its way to commercial and residential kitchens giving us greater reach and making a greater impact. We’re starting with Broward County Public Schools because this is home. They’re also the sixth-largest in the country, serving a highly diverse population,” Giscombe says.
Tumblr media
The Plant4Tomorrow Prototype.
And what’s the secret sauce? “Design. We literally started with the design.  We needed to create an experience that would grab our audience (the kids), while seamlessly integrating into the civic landscape and N55 made that possible,” Giscombe says, referring to the partnership with the Denmark-based group (architect Anne Romme, artist Ion Sørvin and engineer Anne Bagger) to create the eye-catching structures.
The Plant for Tomorrow mission is to foster lifelong learning for all, through active education transforming schools into more expansive learning hubs for the broader community.  It’s a quadruple bottom-line idea in terms of producing social value and an economic development catalyst as the initiative also creates a significant number of jobs.
“One of our guiding principles at Broward County Public Schools is applied learning, where we seek to create opportunities for students to apply what they are learning to real-world scenarios. This innovative Public/Private Partnership with Plant for Tomorrow will deliver on this goal; giving our students a unique educational experience while addressing major agriculture/food issues. This partnership will also generate funding for in-school programs and ensure the sustainability of this initiative. This is a win for our students, it’s a win for public and private partners, and it’s a win for the environment.”
— Robert Runcie, Superintendent, Broward County Public Schools
Tumblr media
Plantation Middle School, the site for the first Plant4Tomorrow.
Giscombe, a father himself, is passionate when he says “Our kids are far ahead of us when it comes to processing power, yet we continue to empower them to blindly follow old paths.  In case you haven't heard, they’re hip to that- and have not-so-politely declined. Their voices today, sound a lot like we once did. And though we willingly set aside the aspirations of our youth, this generation won’t be silenced, and we couldn't if we tried.  Everything is connected today, and how we engage our kid's factors into their view of what's next, and more importantly, what they choose to do about it.”
Now if you’re thinking this seems like an enormous undertaking all around, you’re right.  To create the kind of runway necessary to commit to and see through what will take years to fully deploy, the company is partnering with leading boutique investment bank, B.C. Ziegler, to lead the issue of tax-exempt revenue bonds for the bulk of the financing across the U.S. markets in which the company is establishing operations.
The bonds are expected to be available in the market before year-end, with further international expansion on the cards, though the company is tight-lipped about which ones specifically. Plant and Plant for Tomorrow are also open to working with brands, especially those who have an interest in helping innovate across the food and education systems, to partner in scalable and sustainable ways.
Beyond the technology and the business opportunity, what gets Giscombe really energized is the potential for whole scale transformation of the social contract between people and their food. He speaks passionately about this new era.
“It’s a new relationship, plain and simple," he explains. "Around the world, social systems are failing, people aren’t interested in new rhetoric and instead opt for new approaches to old and new challenges.  The new standard to which government, industry, and business at-large are being held accountable, is purpose. The new kids on the block are taking over the conversation, bringing new solutions to the table announcing a new paradigm; now we’re bringing the people to the table; through food."
"If it wasn’t a movement before, we’re taking responsibility for making it one."

#1yrago Theresa May wants to ban crypto: here's what that would cost, and here's why it won't work anyway
Tumblr media
Aaron Swartz once said, "It's no longer OK not to understand how the Internet works."
He was talking to law-makers, policy-makers and power-brokers, people who were, at best, half-smart about technology -- just smart enough to understand that in a connected world, every problem society has involves computers, and just stupid enough to demand that computers be altered to solve those problems.
Paging Theresa May.
Theresa May says that last night's London terror attacks mean that the internet cannot be allowed to provide a "safe space" for terrorists and therefore working cryptography must be banned in the UK.
This is a golden oldie, a classic piece of foolish political grandstanding. May's predecessor, David Cameron, repeatedly campaigned on this one, and every time he did, I wrote a long piece rebutting him. Rather than writing a new one for May, I thought I'd just dust off a pair of my Cameron-era pieces (1, 2), since every single word still applies.
Theresa May says there should be no "means of communication" which "we cannot read" -- and no doubt many in her party will agree with her, politically. But if they understood the technology, they would be shocked to their boots.
It’s impossible to overstate how bonkers the idea of sabotaging cryptography is to people who understand information security. If you want to secure your sensitive data either at rest – on your hard drive, in the cloud, on that phone you left on the train last week and never saw again – or on the wire, when you’re sending it to your doctor or your bank or to your work colleagues, you have to use good cryptography. Use deliberately compromised cryptography, that has a back door that only the “good guys” are supposed to have the keys to, and you have effectively no security. You might as well skywrite it as encrypt it with pre-broken, sabotaged encryption.
There are two reasons why this is so. First, there is the question of whether encryption can be made secure while still maintaining a “master key” for the authorities’ use. As lawyer/computer scientist Jonathan Mayer explained, adding the complexity of master keys to our technology will “introduce unquantifiable security risks”. It’s hard enough getting the security systems that protect our homes, finances, health and privacy to be airtight – making them airtight except when the authorities don’t want them to be is impossible.
What Theresa May thinks she's saying is, "We will command all the software creators we can reach to introduce back-doors into their tools for us." There are enormous problems with this: there's no back door that only lets good guys go through it. If your Whatsapp or Google Hangouts has a deliberately introduced flaw in it, then foreign spies, criminals, crooked police (like those who fed sensitive information to the tabloids who were implicated in the hacking scandal -- and like the high-level police who secretly worked for organised crime for years), and criminals will eventually discover this vulnerability. They -- and not just the security services -- will be able to use it to intercept all of our communications. That includes things like the pictures of your kids in your bath that you send to your parents to the trade secrets you send to your co-workers.
But this is just for starters. Theresa May doesn't understand technology very well, so she doesn't actually know what she's asking for.
For Theresa May's proposal to work, she will need to stop Britons from installing software that comes from software creators who are out of her jurisdiction. The very best in secure communications are already free/open source projects, maintained by thousands of independent programmers around the world. They are widely available, and thanks to things like cryptographic signing, it is possible to download these packages from any server in the world (not just big ones like Github) and verify, with a very high degree of confidence, that the software you've downloaded hasn't been tampered with.
May is not alone here. The regime she proposes is already in place in countries like Syria, Russia, and Iran (for the record, none of these countries have had much luck with it). There are two means by which authoritarian governments have attempted to restrict the use of secure technology: by network filtering and by technology mandates.
Theresa May has already shown that she believes she can order the nation's ISPs to block access to certain websites (again, for the record, this hasn't worked very well). The next step is to order Chinese-style filtering using deep packet inspection, to try and distinguish traffic and block forbidden programs. This is a formidable technical challenge. Intrinsic to core Internet protocols like IPv4/6, TCP and UDP is the potential to "tunnel" one protocol inside another. This makes the project of figuring out whether a given packet is on the white-list or the black-list transcendentally hard, especially if you want to minimise the number of "good" sessions you accidentally blackhole.
More ambitious is a mandate over which code operating systems in the UK are allowed to execute. This is very hard. We do have, in Apple's Ios platform and various games consoles, a regime where a single company uses countermeasures to ensure that only software it has blessed can run on the devices it sells to us. These companies could, indeed, be compelled (by an act of Parliament) to block secure software. Even there, you'd have to contend with the fact that other EU states and countries like the USA are unlikely to follow suit, and that means that anyone who bought her Iphone in Paris or New York could come to the UK with all their secure software intact and send messages "we cannot read."
But there is the problem of more open platforms, like GNU/Linux variants, BSD and other unixes, Mac OS X, and all the non-mobile versions of Windows. All of these operating systems are already designed to allow users to execute any code they want to run. The commercial operators -- Apple and Microsoft -- might conceivably be compelled by Parliament to change their operating systems to block secure software in the future, but that doesn't do anything to stop people from using all the PCs now in existence to run code that the PM wants to ban.
More difficult is the world of free/open operating systems like GNU/Linux and BSD. These operating systems are the gold standard for servers, and widely used on desktop computers (especially by the engineers and administrators who run the nation's IT). There is no legal or technical mechanism by which code that is designed to be modified by its users can co-exist with a rule that says that code must treat its users as adversaries and seek to prevent them from running prohibited code.
This, then, is what Theresa May is proposing:
* All Britons' communications must be easy for criminals, voyeurs and foreign spies to intercept
* Any firms within reach of the UK government must be banned from producing secure software
* All major code repositories, such as Github and Sourceforge, must be blocked
* Search engines must not answer queries about web-pages that carry secure software
* Virtually all academic security work in the UK must cease -- security research must only take place in proprietary research environments where there is no onus to publish one's findings, such as industry R&D and the security services
* All packets in and out of the country, and within the country, must be subject to Chinese-style deep-packet inspection and any packets that appear to originate from secure software must be dropped
* Existing walled gardens (like Ios and games consoles) must be ordered to ban their users from installing secure software
* Anyone visiting the country from abroad must have their smartphones held at the border until they leave
* Proprietary operating system vendors (Microsoft and Apple) must be ordered to redesign their operating systems as walled gardens that only allow users to run software from an app store, which will not sell or give secure software to Britons
* Free/open source operating systems -- that power the energy, banking, ecommerce, and infrastructure sectors -- must be banned outright
Theresa May will say that she doesn't want to do any of this. She'll say that she can implement weaker versions of it -- say, only blocking some "notorious" sites that carry secure software. But anything less than the programme above will have no material effect on the ability of criminals to carry on perfectly secret conversations that "we cannot read". If any commodity PC or jailbroken phone can run any of the world's most popular communications applications, then "bad guys" will just use them. Jailbreaking an OS isn't hard. Downloading an app isn't hard. Stopping people from running code they want to run is -- and what's more, it puts the whole nation -- individuals and industry -- in terrible jeopardy.
That’s a technical argument, and it’s a good one, but you don’t have to be a cryptographer to understand the second problem with back doors: the security services are really bad at overseeing their own behaviour.
Once these same people have a back door that gives them access to everything that encryption protects, from the digital locks on your home or office to the information needed to clean out your bank account or read all your email, there will be lots more people who’ll want to subvert the vast cohort that is authorised to use the back door, and the incentives for betraying our trust will be much more lavish than anything a tabloid reporter could afford.
If you want a preview of what a back door looks like, just look at the US Transportation Security Administration’s “master keys” for the locks on our luggage. Since 2003, the TSA has required all locked baggage travelling within, or transiting through, the USA to be equipped with Travelsentry locks, which have been designed to allow anyone with a widely held master key to open them.
What happened after Travelsentry went into effect? Stuff started going missing from bags. Lots and lots of stuff. A CNN investigation into thefts from bags checked in US airports found thousands of incidents of theft committed by TSA workers and baggage handlers. And though “aggressive investigation work” has cut back on theft at some airports, insider thieves are still operating with impunity throughout the country, even managing to smuggle stolen goods off the airfield in airports where all employees are searched on their way in and out of their work areas.
The US system is rigged to create a halo of buck-passing unaccountability. When my family picked up our bags from our Easter holiday in the US, we discovered that the TSA had smashed the locks off my nearly new, unlocked, Travelsentry-approved bag, taping it shut after confirming it had nothing dangerous in it, and leaving it “completely destroyed” in the words of the official BA damage report. British Airways has sensibly declared the damage to be not their problem, as they had nothing to do with destroying the bag. The TSA directed me to a form that generated an illiterate reply from a government subcontractor, sent from a do-not-reply email address, advising that “TSA is not liable for any damage to locks or bags that are required to be opened by force for security purposes” (the same note had an appendix warning me that I should treat this communication as confidential). I’ve yet to have any other communications from the TSA.
Making it possible for the state to open your locks in secret means that anyone who works for the state, or anyone who can bribe or coerce anyone who works for the state, can have the run of your life. Cryptographic locks don’t just protect our mundane communications: cryptography is the reason why thieves can’t impersonate your fob to your car’s keyless ignition system; it’s the reason you can bank online; and it’s the basis for all trust and security in the 21st century.
In her Dimbleby lecture, Martha Lane Fox recalled Aaron Swartz’s words: “It’s not OK not to understand the internet anymore.” That goes double for cryptography: any politician caught spouting off about back doors is unfit for office anywhere but Hogwarts, which is also the only educational institution whose computer science department believes in “golden keys” that only let the right sort of people break your encryption.

WHAT IS LED LINEAR LIGHTING?
LED Linear is a phrase we often hear in the realms of commercial interior design, but what exactly does it mean and how do we use it? This article aims to ‘de-mystify’ commercial LED Linear lighting and give you an insight into how and where to use it, to effortlessly turn cool offices into exceptional ones!
Firstly let’s talk about LEDs. An LED is short for ‘Light Emitting Diode’, which is a highly efficient long-lasting source of light which uses a semiconductor to convert electricity into light. When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with ‘electron holes’ within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons (light). The colour of the light is determined by the energy band of the semiconductor.
Right, that’s enough of the techy stuff, lets take a look at how the LED came to be.
The LED appeared as early on 1962, and were used as practical components in electric items, such as warning lights. The early LEDs were limited to low-intensity infrared light such as those still used in remote controls, and do you remember those first LED watches with a black screen and red numbers appeared when you pressed a button? The first visible light LEDs were also low intensity and limited to red, but modern LEDs are now available across the visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths and can be extremely bright.
SO WHAT IS LED LINEAR
LED Linear Lighting is simply the use of many ‘Light emitting diodes’ packaged together in a long, narrow housing to create a strip of light. This simple concept revolutionised the way we light spaces.
Before the conception of LED Linear, lighting long commercial spaces such as offices, warehouses and retail situations was notoriously tricky. Such spaces were lit with large, industrial incandescent bulbs. Linear lighting started evolving in the 1950s with fluorescent tubes, mainly used in industrial spaces. By the 1970s this technology was being used in homes, garages and workshops, and retail spaces. This further created a need for lower cost, better-looking fittings. Creating a continuous uninterrupted line of light wasn’t possible before LED because the fluorescent tubes had to stop and start leaving a black or dark spot.
The improved looks didn’t happen until the early 2000’s when the early version of commercial LED Linear as we know it was made. The demand for LED Linear lighting is now huge and continues to grow. The difference now is that linear architectural lighting and LED technology has broadened the applications of commercial LED linear fixtures. The industry continues to evolve with improvements in aesthetics and performance, moving away from the old, traditional housings, utilising materials in a better way and incorporating more advanced technology.
LED LINEAR REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS
There’s a couple of key things that Synergy’s clients like to know about standards and regulations around commercial lighting, particularly for use in public and work spaces; just ask and we can advise!
One of the main regulations is regarding glare from commercial lighting. Excessive glare from lights, such as LED highbay light can cause eyestrain and headaches, so it’s important to reduce direct glare and reflected glare within an office environment. Unified Glare Rating (UGR) is used as a measure of glare and is calculated by the glare from all visible lamps divided by the background lamination of the room. In an office environment, a UGR of less than 19 is considered acceptable for best concentration. Want to find out more about UGR19?
Lux levels are important too. This is essentially the light level in a space, usually measured from a specified height (such as desk height in an office). CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) specify recommended lux levels for different areas in the commercial building sector.
WHY COMMERCIAL LED LINEAR?
Our clients appreciate a host of benefits boasted by commercial LED Linear lighting, including;
Aesthetics – if looks are important to you, then LED Linear has a pretty strong offering. It provides a massive amount of versatility for creating unique and eye-catching designs. Bespoke angles, curves and customised RAL colour powder coating are just a few of the options available that make LED Linear an easy choice.
Directional light – LEDs are directional, reducing the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light.
Colour temperature – LED Linear lights offer a large range of colour temperatures, which affect the way the eye interprets the light. From cool white to warm white, different temperatures can be used to create mood and atmosphere in a space. Neutral white, or 4000 kelvin to use its technical name, is recommended for offices and retail areas which provides the most comfortable environment.
Cost effective – an obvious advantage, LED Linear is extremely efficient to run due to its low energy usage, and also its inherent longevity; an LED will typically last many times longer than a fluorescent tube.
Once you’ve made the decision to use commercial LED Linear lighting for your space, there are a bewildering array of options, so we’ve broken it down into some of the key factors for you to consider:
LED LIGHT TYPE
The three main types of LED Linear are pendant, surface mounted or recessed.
LED Linear Pendant lighting use suspension wires to hang from the ceiling, and are most suited to rooms with generous ceiling height. These are also ideal for creating stunning accent lighting – think about hanging over reception desks, stairways or atriums. Surface Mounted LED tri proof light are mounted onto the surface of the and are suited to situations where pendant lights could be too low due to ceiling height. Recessed LED linear are recessed into a surface, be it a ceiling, wall or . This offers clean, uninterrupted lines.
LED LINEAR PROFILE
LED Linear lights with LED lichtband system can be straight or shaped to create dramatic sculptures for ultimate effect.
Straight profiles will typically create a subtler effect, but can also be used to create eye catching geometric style designs. Curved profiles will typically help to create flow in a space and give a feeling of movement. Round profiles are often used to help divide space into zones, particularly in open plan spaces. For example LED rings suspended lower than surrounding lighting over collaborative zones creates a sense of focus.
LED LINEAR APPLICATIONS
LED linear is very versatile and can be used for a number of commercial lighting applications, such as LED sport light.
General lighting – this is the high level lighting that provides that background light in a space. Care should be taken that light is distributed evenly and glare is avoided. Task lighting – this is focused light for specific tasks, such as a low hung LED ring over a collaborative area. Accent – light used for aesthetic effect, such as to highlight or mirror the shape of a distinctive architectural feature or give a sense of height to a room. Our recessed LED Linear lights are perfect for this. Let your imagination run wild and the results can be stunning!
Here are the top 4 reasons why LED Emergency Lights are better:
Efficiency — LEDs use a process called electroluminescence, meaning that electrons are combined with electron holes when switched on. Incandescent bulbs have a filament that burns to create light, which means energy is being used to create heat. There is no filament used in LEDs, so heat is not a major issue. LEDs are thinner and lighter, which makes them more economical and efficient. Low-temperature performance, ability to be controlled digitally, and the robust nature of the bulbs make LED lights more efficient than others. Overall, LED lights typically produce a 30% energy savings compared to normal bulbs, and solar light might be a more eco-friendly product.
Lifespan — The lifespan of an LED bulb is about 50x longer than standard incandescent bulbs. The burning filament inside of an incandescent bulb wears out very quickly, which results in the bulb needing replaced. LED lights do not have a burning filament, which allow them to last approximately 50,000 more hours than a standard incandescent bulb.
Brightness — Brightness is extremely important when it comes to an emergency light. Emergency lights are used to illuminate the path for evacuation of the building in the event of an emergency. LED lights are some of the brightest types of bulbs available. They are much brighter than incandescent bulbs of the same wattage. LED lights are the best choice for brightness in an emergency light.
Maintenance — Inspections and testing are required for all emergency lights; LEDs are no exception. However, the extended lifespan makes replacement less likely. Constant replacement of non-LED bulbs can get costly. Emergency lights with LED bulbs can save your facility money in the long run.

If you’re an essential business still operating at this time, keeping your workplace safe and free from infection is likely a primary concern. This is true both to prevent illness in the facility and to preserve peace of mind for all occupants, so they know all steps are being taken to keep them safe. The CDC’s guidelines call for every essential business to “clean and disinfect all areas…routinely.” Additionally, at this point it is clear that individuals can be asymptomatic and still transmit COVID-19 (more data here), resulting in necessary actions being taken across every organization that has its doors open.
As a result, many organizations are taking steps to keep their facilities sanitized, such as wiping down areas with disinfecting wipes and cleaning more regularly than normal. We believe that these steps are important but not sufficient to maintain a safe work environment in the midst of an epidemic. We strongly recommend professionally disinfecting your facility as a way to keep your employees and occupants safe and to keep essential personnel working in this time of crisis. Here are three of the reasons why:    Professional sanitizing can reach all corners of the facility. By applying disinfectant using a combination of techniques—including fogging, surface wiping, and spraying—areas of the building are addressed that would otherwise be missed by ordinary cleaning. A brief overview of these methods (more details here):    Fogging—Technique that uses a fine spray to deliver disinfectant so that it reaches all interior spaces. Can be done in interior spaces as well as in air duct systems.    Surface wiping—Wiping down all surfaces with industrial-grade disinfectant. The solution is applied wet, allowed to dwell, then wiped for maximum effectiveness.    Spraying—Applying a “wet” spray to completely coat a surface in sanitizing solution. After the solution is applied, it is allowed to dry to ensure effectiveness. You’ve probably seen footage of this on the news, as cities have been wet-spraying public spaces. Via these techniques, every nook and cranny of the facility—from high-touch surfaces to the interior of the air duct system—can be sanitized.    Professional cleaning utilizes a different quality of sanitizing product. Off-the-shelf products can be effective at addressing coronavirus, but they will not have the efficacy of a higher-strength disinfectant. A couple of notes about disinfecting products:    The EPA maintains a list of products for use against COVID-19—found here—that includes both professional-strength and off-the-shelf products. We are using only the products found on this list and would recommend all others do the same.    You hear products being promoted as “hospital grade” or “industrial grade.” These are purely marketing terms and don’t represent anything about the quality of the product. That said, there is a distinction between professional-strength cleaning products such as the ones that WICHITA CLEANING COMPANY uses and off-the-shelf products you would buy at the store. By using a company like WICHITA CLEANING COMPANY that employs professional-strength cleaning products included on the EPA list to fight coronavirus, you are receiving the highest-quality sanitation and maximizing your likelihood of eliminating any virus.    By not using your employees or staff to clean and disinfect the premises, you are keeping them safe and out of harm’s way. Professional crews such as ours are trained to wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and clean in such a way as to minimize risk to themselves. If you are using your own staff to wipe down and clean areas, they may not know how to properly protect themselves.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT COVID-19 FOR FACILITIES SERVICE AND CLEANING STAFF: This guidance is based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Facility. How does COVID-19 spread? The virus that causes COVID-19 is spread through close contact from person to person in respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Although not as common, you could get COVID-19 if you touch an object or a surface that has the virus on it, and then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. That's why washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is so important for protecting yourself and slowing the spread. How long does the virus live on objects and surfaces? We are still learning how long the virus lives outside of a person. A recent study found that the virus can live up to 4 hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard, and up to 2 to 3 days on hard surfaces like plastic and stainless steel. We don't know yet what effect different conditions, such heat, cold, or exposure to sunlight have on the virus, which could make those times shorter. You can protect yourself and others from COVID-19 by washing your hands and cleaning frequently used objects and frequently touched surfaces (like door knobs, railings, drinking fountains, and counters). Should I wear gloves while cleaning? Yes, you should wear disposable gloves while cleaning, but remember not to touch your face with your gloves. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after removing your gloves. What should I do with my work clothing after I'm done cleaning?
Wash your clothes as you normally would. No special detergent is needed. Consider bringing a change of clothes to work and changing before you leave. Put your work clothes in a plastic bag until you can get home and wash them. I'm worried about bringing germs home to my family. How can I protect them? Follow basic prevention measures such as washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when you are done cleaning (and wash them again when you get home). In addition, consider changing your clothing before you leave work and putting them in the wash before you interact with your children and family members.

A missing ingredient in COVID oversight: Equity

A missing ingredient in COVID oversight: Equity
Tumblr media
By Joseph Foti, Norman Eisen The response to COVID-19 is not just record-level spending and borrowing. It may already constitute a wealth reallocation of historic proportions. The implications for equity, future growth, and climate are tremendous. The health and economic crises – and in some cases, the government response to them – have not only been felt more acutely in particular businesses and industries. They have also disproportionately hurt black- and minority-owned businesses and the communities they serve. As experts at watchdog organizations as well as our own respective organizations have pointed out, transparency and oversight are essential to ensuring a fair recovery that meets the needs of those who are struggling the most. The 20th century transparency toolkit will not be enough by itself. Moving forward, the “holy trinity” of transparency and anti-corruption reform – fighting against waste, fraud, and abuse – needs a fourth element: striving for equity. The case for this approach remains fundamental; more efficient spending means money for other programs or lower taxes that benefit the average citizen. To capture the differential impacts of federal actions, oversight institutions must ask and answer the right questions as a matter of racial, social and economic justice. They must be able to gather and generate the data they need and guide implementation at agencies. This will help inform citizens about who received the money, why, and who benefited from it. Critics on the left and the right, as well as non-partisan observers have raised questions of distributional appropriateness in stimulus spending. The concern, then should not be partisan, but rather a basic element of policy analysis. Examples from the CARES Act (Pub.L. 116-136) show why we need to better prioritize considerations about equity.
Bond buying rejuvenated financial markets, but left citizens and small businesses behind. The CARES Act directs the Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) to buy bonds to support markets and employment. The Fed projects holding $9T in assets by the end of the year, a four-fold increase over the decade. The Fed began large capital bond buying well before it began supporting small and mid-sized companies. This came shortly on the heels of a regulatory process exempted from the Administrative Procedures Act seen by some to have favored large capital and the oil industry. This bears particular relevance to minority-owned businesses: according to McKinsey, because these businesses are smaller and have less access to traditional banks, they were considerably less able to access capital.
Tax refunds allowed executives to profit from the crisis. The problem of inequality is not only that smaller or minority-owned businesses get less access to relief. The problem is also the disproportionate and sometimes questionable relief at the top. A legal, but questionable, example stands out. The CARES Act authorized oil companies to obtain tax refunds on net operating losses from prior years. As a result of this, Diamond Offshore Drilling, already in bankruptcy proceedings, saw an immediate benefit of $9.7M in tax rebates. Shortly thereafter, the company asked the bankruptcy judge to permit a coincident $9.7M bonus to nine executives. This was discovered through Securities and Exchange Commission Proprietorships or other legal vehicles are not subject to the same requirements of non-profits or publicly traded companies.
Without accountability for misuse of funds, some companies applied for and received Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans despite having ready access to ample capital. The fiscal elements of stimulus ($2.6 trillion) include loans, grants and direct assistance to individuals and organizations. Intended recipients of PPP funding are those companies that, without federal assistance, would be unable to retain their workforces. However, some businesses that received hefty credit extensions or additional loans shortly before the pandemic hit also received a federal loan. For example, Legacy Housing, a Texas-based manufacturer of pre-built homes, announced on April 1 its access to $25 million in credit. On April 10, it received an additional $6.5 million S.B.A loan from the federal government. (In response to reporting, Legacy returned the $6.5 million in federal assistance, according to the company’s executive chairman. The chairman added that “Legacy is a highly leveraged company without cash on hand. Here was a way to get a cash infusion.”)
Black and minority-owned businesses struggled to get relief under the CARES Act. While lawmakers intended for the program to prioritize “underserved” markets and business owners of color, independent analyses indicate that counties with higher ratios of black-owned businesses tended to have lower rates of PPP allocation.
Reducing operational barriers for companies creates health, safety, and environmental risks for vulnerable groups. According to a recent cross-national comparison, the US has been found to have had one of the least green stimulus packages— with serious environmental justice and generational consequences. While a detailed list of tax expenditures is not available, a worldwide survey showed they include foregone revenue, subsidies, waivers of regulation, participation, and oversight, and weakened safety or environmental liability. These non-financial elements of stimulus are estimated at $298 billion and may disproportionately benefit industries which do significant damage to the environment and human health. Evidence shows that such environmental damage is most severe in communities of color.
Another questionable tax expenditure: the rate of depreciation for most commercial real estate was lowered from 39 to 15 years. It is unclear how this will affect federal coffers, how this addresses the effects of COVID-19 and whether such generous changes in tax code will sunset after time.
Despite strong work by some reporters, think tanks, and some legislators, no official agency is tasked with identifying whether money reached those individuals, businesses, and communities hardest hit by the pandemic and its economic effects. It is not enough to have non-profits and the media sector ask questions about who benefits from record spending. It requires big data and the stamp of official, impartial review, and clear guidance for civil servants making policy. The Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PRAC) has taken some positive steps in tracking who received major sources of spending. (See figure below for their reporting.) While a good start, many of the categories leave questions about whether these benefitted the most affected or the most connected. FIGURE: A promising start: PRAC reporting on the destination of US Stimulus Money Various reforms could be undertaken to monitor the distributional impacts of the recovery.
Create or adapt oversight institutions: This could require a new institution (an “Office of Distributional Impacts”) or modifying an existing institutional mandate (such as OMB or the PRAC), not necessarily requiring legislation.
Track costs and benefits for minority communities: A core aspect of these institutions’ mandates would be public reporting on distribution of costs and benefits of federal actions across race, class, gender, generation, geographic region, and size of enterprise. A variety of tools and methods could be used, whether integrated into existing informational assessments (environmental or cost-benefit analysis) or as standalone documents.
Develop new standards of adequacy: Early stages of reporting might focus only on whether benefits went to communities with the greatest COVID-19 impacts. A more complex process might report on whether costs and benefits change depending on the discount rate. Over time, standards of adequacy and quality would develop.
None of this would predetermine whether a program should be undertaken. Rather, like other forms of impact assessment, this would be a set of responsibilities and processes to identify, predict, evaluate, and potentially mitigate the distributional effects of an action or major decision. Americans deserve transparency about whether their money was leveraged effectively. While many have done yeoman’s work of researching these difficult issues, it should not primarily remain the work of non-governmental actors alone to ask basic questions about whether tax dollars are driving people together or apart. Joseph Foti is the Chief Research Officer of the Open Government Partnership. He leads the Analytics and Insights team which is responsible for major research initiatives, managing OGP’s significant data resources, and ensuring the highest quality of analysis and relevance in OGP publications. Ambassador Norman Eisen (ret.) is a senior fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings and an expert on law, ethics, and anti-corruption.

Here are three of the reasons why:
Professional sanitizing can reach all corners of the facility. By applying disinfectant using a combination of techniques—including fogging, surface wiping, and spraying—areas of the building are addressed that would otherwise be missed by ordinary cleaning.
A brief overview of these methods (more details here):
Fogging—Technique that uses a fine spray to deliver disinfectant so that it reaches all interior spaces.
A couple of notes about disinfecting products:
The EPA maintains a list of products for use against COVID-19—found here—that includes both professional-strength and off-the-shelf products. We are using only the products found on this list and would recommend all others do the same.
You hear products being promoted as “hospital grade” or “industrial grade.” These are purely marketing terms and don’t represent anything about the quality of the product. That said, there is a distinction between professional-strength cleaning products such as the ones that MGM HOUSEHOLD SERVICES uses and off-the-shelf products you would buy at the store.
By using a company like MGM HOUSEHOLD SERVICES that employs professional-strength cleaning products included on the EPA list to fight coronavirus, you are receiving the highest-quality sanitation and maximizing your likelihood of eliminating any virus.
In addition, companies such as MGM HOUSEHOLD SERVICES can schedule after-hours work to avoid contact with your occupants and eliminate any person-to-person interaction. This is much safer than having staff clean during regular business hours. (If it is not possible to schedule after-hours work—as in the case of facilities that are open 24 hours a day—companies like ours can work with you to identify a solution.)
For each of the reasons above, we believe that every essential business should be regularly conducting professional cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. When the time comes to have sanitizing work done, we have several recommendations, found here.

Follow basic prevention measures such as washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when you are done cleaning (and wash them again when you get home). In addition, consider changing your clothing before you leave work and putting them in the wash before you interact with your children and family members.

CORONAVIRUS CLEANING SERVICES MCALLEN, TX RGV Cleaning Company Virus Prevention Services McAllen, TX We offer deep cleaning and infection prevention control to Residential Homes, Apartments and Commercial Hospitals, Ambulances, Dentists, Schools, Council Buildings, Restaurants, Nightclubs, Offices and Commercial Buildings. At RGV Cleaning Company we perform a deep cleaning service to prevent any chance of Coronavirus spreading. We will ensure that any common areas that germs could spread will be cleaned. We carry out deep cleaning on site, then focus on the high risk regular touch points of the building. These areas are cleaned with either a viricidal and bactericidal, bleach based disinfectants, or superheated steam, as recommended by the center for disease control.
EMERGENCY CORONAVIRUS FOGGING CLEANING SERVICES MCALLEN, TX As you may imagine our coronavirus deep cleaning services are currently in high demand. We are striving to offer our services as efficiently as ever, and we also have an emergency 24 hour coronavirus cleaning service in place. We are committed to provide you with rapid emergency response on a 24/7 basis throughout the McAllen, TX, as your peace of mind matters to us. Call us today!
That said, there is a distinction between professional-strength cleaning products such as the ones that RGV Cleaning Company uses and off-the-shelf products you would buy at the store.
By using a company like RGV Cleaning Company that employs professional-strength cleaning products included on the EPA list to fight coronavirus, you are receiving the highest-quality sanitation and maximizing your likelihood of eliminating any virus.
In addition, companies such as RGV Cleaning Company can schedule after-hours work to avoid contact with your occupants and eliminate any person-to-person interaction. This is much safer than having staff clean during regular business hours. (If it is not possible to schedule after-hours work—as in the case of facilities that are open 24 hours a day—companies like ours can work with you to identify a solution.) For each of the reasons above, we believe that every essential business should be regularly conducting professional cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. When the time comes to have sanitizing work done, we have several recommendations, found here.
And of course, whenever you decide to clean, sanitize, and disinfect, RGV Cleaning Company is here for you and happy to help. RGV Cleaning Company is the industry leader in infectious disease and biohazard remediation, including coronavirus (COVID-19) disinfection, and delivers the highest professional standards possible. RGV CLEANING COMPANY uses a 3-step cleaning process to help protect your property and provide a safer environment for employees and patrons.

STEP # 2 - PROTECTION After surfaces are thoroughly cleaned with the disinfect, RGV Cleaning Company applies the BIOPROTECT™ RTU Antimicrobial Surface Protectant BIOPROTECT™ RTU is an EPA-registered, water-based formula that forms an antimicrobial shield which provides persistent, continuous, antimicrobial protection against a broad range of microbes. While the virus is termed coronavirus, the sickness that results after infection has been termed COVID-19. COVID-19 has now been declared a pandemic, which is a global outbreak of a disease.   Specialized Products The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the RGV Cleaning Company product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

In addition, consider changing your clothing before you leave work and putting them in the wash before you interact with your children and family members.

Brian Minter: Sustainable farming is our future
Tumblr media
In our hearts, we all know that growing food and plants organically is the best way forward to ensure a healthy future for ourselves and the planet, but learning how to grow organically and how to handle the challenges, often results in us slipping back to using more conventional methods.
A few weeks ago, I met a gentleman, Shahzad Nazir Khan, who has a very interesting philosophy on this topic. Currently, Khan is the sales manager of TerraLink Horticulture’s division of organic and organic-based products. Located in Abbotsford, TerraLink is one of B.C.’s largest farm supply companies.
Born in Pakistan into a farming family, Khan graduated with a Master of Science Agronomy degree from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.  In 2006 he immigrated to Canada and took a position with the BioFert Company, which was subsequently purchased by TerraLink.
In Pakistan, in the semi-arid area of Dera Ghazi Khan district where Khan’s maternal family farmed, there was always a shortage of water, which often led to less use of conventional fertilizers and pest controls because water is essential to the application of these products. Surprisingly, the wheat, sorghum, millet and chickpea they grew seemed to have a better flavour because of this. His mother, in particular, noticed this difference.
“Today, there are over 185 countries in the world growing organically, equating to about 175 million acres of organic production. Unfortunately, this is only about 1.4 per cent of the agricultural land,” explained Khan. “Organics is a process, and it’s our job in the organic industry to educate the farming community on how growing more organically can create a more sustainable growing environment.”

Khan believes the best approach is to promote the advantages of sustainable farming. The idea is to produce more with less of an impact on the environment
One of the greatest challenges the world will face in the future is the ability to feed an ever-increasing global population as it balloons from seven billion to ten billion people. To manage this growth, Khan points out that economists estimate that food production needs to at least double. He is very proud of the fact that his company is advocating for more sustainable farming by taking the “middle ground.”
They have developed several new products which have been branded as EarthLink. These organic-based products allow both the farming community and the home garden sector to transition into more sustainable growing. The idea is to shift the emphasis from ‘feeding the crops’ to ‘feeding the soil.’
“The key concept of this “middle ground” approach is to take advantage of the synergy that comes with organic-based products and not to concentrate exclusively on conventional farming or strictly use only organic inputs. In the near future, as the industry provides for the use of more things like beneficial micro-organisms, bio-stimulants and bio-pest controls, the organic-based farmer will definitely have advantages in sustainability, economics and marketing that conventional farmers may not have.”
Further, he suggests that “the best practice for crop producers is to get the best of both worlds. Conventional agriculture has all the power of modern fertilizers and crop inputs. Organic agriculture has a deep understanding of how to build a super-soil that is alive with living organisms and beneficial microbes and has plenty of organic acids. The resulting good soil tilth and health will unlock the true potential of crop lands. The cocktail of these two farming approaches will be the future of farming that has a truly sustainable foundation.”
Tumblr media
Khan said that the interest level in the various farming communities has been excellent. He cited some of the problems that local berry farmers were experiencing with standard practices and by introducing this new approach, they are now seeing slow but encouraging changes. The combined effects of feeding the crops and nourishing the soil at the same time are making a positive difference.
As the summer garden season winds down, I asked Khan what he would suggest home gardeners do to the soil for the fall and winter.
Without missing a beat, he suggested adding both humic acids and kelp. As we move into the rainy seasons, humic acid will help decrease salinity and increase water retention, as well as boost microbial activity in the soil. Kelp will aid plants deal with any kind of abiotic stress and will also encourage the establishment of a better bud set for next year, especially in perennials.
Heavy rains also affect the pH levels in our soils. In our area, applying calcium in the form of lime is an important step, but we need an accurate pH reading.
When new information comes our way to help us improve any current practice, we would be wise to weigh the benefits. We should consider transitioning to more organic growing, or more importantly, sustainable gardening, and now may be the best time to make those changes.
I’m very appreciative of Shahzad Khan and TerraLink for guiding both the home gardener and the farming community towards more sustainable growing practices. For commercial growers, their organic and organic-based products, under the banner of EarthLink, are available at their Abbotsford and Delta locations and through their distributors across the province. For home gardeners, they can find their organic products at garden stores under the brand name Orgunique.

Retail technology news and analysis for omnichannel retailers
Tumblr media
RTIH: Tell us about OneDash
RP: OneDash provides interactive technology to help brands make an instant return on their content investments. By directly connecting the point of inspiration and transaction, the platform creates faster, easier, and more valuable shopping experiences from every perspective.
Consumers can immediately access what they want; going straight from initial product interest to browsing and buying, in just one click. For retailers, the ability to simply monetise media and increase interactivity drives better results.
As well as boosting engagement, cutting out extra steps such as re-directs to external sites helps to shorten journeys and reduce the risk of drop-offs. In the long-term, that means higher sales, greater brand loyalty, and a sharper edge over competitors.
RTIH: What was the inspiration behind setting the company up?
RP: Succeeding in the online retail environment isn’t easy. Not only do today’s consumers have an endless range of content to choose from, but the number of brands vying for their attention and spend is constantly multiplying.
Several years ago, I came up against these issues myself and this experience is what formed the foundation for OneDash. Keen to move on from the oil and gas sector, I sold my business and focused on fashion.
But after launching in Singapore, I realised how hard it can be to enter new markets. It became clear there was a wider need for efficient and affordable technology to help companies in the same position, which is exactly what I decided to build.
OneDash started life as an interactive solution for fashion brands – used to add shoppable ‘hotspots’ in fashion show content and live streams – but it has expanded rapidly.
The power of interactive video to enhance cut through and fuel action makes it a vital tool for any company, and our reach has grown to cover multiple industries. In the near future, our aim is to explore further opportunities, looking beyond video to make all forms of media more interactive and effective.
RTIH: What has been the industry reaction thus far?
RP: At the start of 2020, the increasing appeal and maturity of shoppable video had already taken us to the point of daily conversations with major media and direct-to-consumer clients. But with the global Covid-19 situation has come an exponential surge of interest in both the advantages it offers and our streamlined solution.
Businesses are recognising that providing real-time interaction and purchase options is vital to meet the rising consumer need for close brand connection and instant gratification. As a result, they are shifting from consultation to action at speed – with some large agencies accelerating discussions from weeks to days – and setting their sights on multi-faceted implementation.
For instance, recent months have seen a sizeable uptick in demand for interactive video that runs across both native channels and social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
At an internal level, the influx of new and diverse enquiries has also helped improve our insight into business requirements across sectors; enabling us to better identify how OneDash’s tech can be reshaped to meet specific needs and deliver more value.
“Many bricks and mortar retailers are heading for deep attrition, especially those with big investments in physical restaurants and commercial property. To sustain their businesses, it will be more crucial than ever to support high street outlets with stronger online activity”
RTIH: What has been your biggest challenge/setback?
RP: Recent trends have worked in favour of interactive video, but we are still a new company that is working to revolutionise shoppable media and that is our greatest ongoing challenge. While appreciation of the need for change is growing, there is still some way to go before we reach mass global adoption and establish a new standard for sophisticated video advertising.
This mix of positive and negative also applies to many other obstacles. Because our work is about enriching digital content, we have been affected by the pandemic-driven disruption to media budgets and planning; with declining content production causing a knock-on effect.
Yet the ability to monetise pre-existing video has also meant companies struggling can use OneDash to bolster ROI across social, programmatic, and native environments.
Personally, I have also had the challenge of an unplanned stay in London. Just when lockdown came into force, I happened to be stopping over after unveiling OneDash tech at DX3 in Canada, meaning the changeover turned into four months away from my family and home.
This time in the UK, however, had beneficial outcomes; allowing me to dial up local sales activity and focus more energy on building client relationships.
RTIH: What are the biggest challenges facing the online retail sector right now?
RP: Many bricks and mortar retailers are heading for deep attrition, especially those with big investments in physical restaurants and commercial property. To sustain their businesses, it will be more crucial than ever to support high street outlets with stronger online activity.
Of course, this brings difficulties of its own. Key among the problems with the digital segment is that consumers tend to be loyal to convenience first, in addition to what they already know.
This means that simply dialling up their online presence isn’t enough; retailers must master the basics of seamless online service – from financial fulfilment to last mile delivery – and rapidly give shoppers what they want.
There are varied tactics retailers can deploy to deliver the smooth and speedy shopping experience consumers expect, but one of the most impactful is going interactive. By adding clickable elements to videos and leveraging advanced direct in-cart integration they can satisfy consumer needs and present them with relevant products, before their competitors do.
RTIH: What’s the best questions about your company or the market asked of you recently by a) an investor and b) a customer?
RP: A San Francisco-based investor recently asked us: “what are the potential artificial intelligence (AI) applications for AB testing and content recommendations before a creative is released?”
This query wasn’t just important because it had a critical bearing on their willingness to invest; it also opened up new avenues for OneDash. The idea of using AI to give a content creator simulated feedback on a creative before serving it aligns perfectly with our emphasis on innovation and cost saving. What’s more, we also have the data collection and behavioural analytics necessary to make it happen.
Improving data evaluation is a rising priority for customers too. One question from a client about how to find the optimal channel for video ads has also led to developments in our analytical capabilities.
Where we had previously enabled clients to track creative performance across channels, introducing unique tags has made it possible to collate and compare data in a more granular way.
For instance, clients can now use smart algorithms to assess data in real-time and determine how their ‘master’ ad should be adapted for different channels and markets, such as cutting it to 30 seconds for display or 15 seconds for social.
RTIH: What can we expect to see from OneDash over the next 12 months?
RP: In short, branching. We’ve made considerable headway with driving the transition to truly interactive video, now OneDash is ready for the next phase of shoppable progress.
The release of our branching module will allow companies to tell an array of amazing stories via any distribution channel. With segmented video they can enable individuals to pick their preferred narrative, giving them greater control over how they interact with content and an even more tailored experience.
The added bonus being that it has the capacity to increase personalisation while keeping spend at a minimum; instead of building numerous creatives, brand marketers can showcase their entire product range in a single video and let the viewer decide which ones they would like to discover more about.
Alongside several other projects for improving multi-team collaboration and centralised creative management, this branching solution is set to make for an exciting 2021; for our clients and OneDash.
