I want to assume that ppl celebrating the verdict of That court case are just uninformed and don't just plain old hate women but man... I feel like if u know enough to know who won how do u not also know that both courts found that he literally Did abuse her and what kind of fucked up precedent this sets for any other female abuse victims who try to speak up about it?? Also I'm going to be honest here I thought we all knew by now that anytime the far right is shitting their pants with excitement over something it's probably NOT a good thing like that alone should have tipped people off
#I know that she is far from a perfect victim and she has also done shitty things but my god she IS a victim#this loss for her is a loss for ALL women who are victims whether you like it or not whether you like her or not#I don't care if you love that man's movies if they raised you it is a literal fact that he abused his wife#now we have a PRECEDENT for it literally being defamation for women to tell their stories and speak up about being abused#DO YOU GET HOW FUCKED UP THAT IS#like she didn't even NAME him in that piece#if you are worried about roe v wade (which everyone should be) then you should be worried about this too!!#men in power are systematically stripping women of their rights and people are CELEBRATING this???#anyway this was prompted by me seeing someone I follow on here celebrating the verdict which RATTLED me because they seemed normal#ofc we need to support male victims too but this was not a situation of supporting a male victim this was about oppressing women#there's nuance to every situation obviously but this one had an unquestionably unfavorable outcome for every woman who has or may be abused#also just the amount of pure hatred and vitriol that has been directed towards her is actually insane considering she's the victim#that man's press team really brainwashed ppl who love his movies into thinking hes their friend from TV not an abuser (Which Is What He Is)#even if you dont like either of them and didn't think either of them should win this outcome still should bother you because that man WON#he got free publicity public opinion on his side again and mass hate for the woman who he abused and then dared to speak up about it#+ the court literally acknowledging that he DID ABUSE her & somehow still ruling that it was defamation for her to write about it

So I won't be voting for biden in November. I'm trans and live in a red state. I very familiar with the harm a trump presidency will do both to the country and me personally. I think most people refusing to vote for biden are aware of what trump will do.
But the democrats have presented this same choice in every election I've ever had the opportunity to vote in. And every time I gritted my teeth and voted for them because of supposed harm reduction they failed to protect my rights. And then only moved the party further to the right in the next election.
The genocide in gaza is just a breaking point for many of us after years of failure and broken promises by the democratic party. The harm against my community has continued under bidens presidency and he has made his priorities funding genocide and dragging us into another pointless war. Why would I continue to support him? The hopelessness you see voting 3rd party is how we see voting for biden.
I don't necessarily think a 3rd party candidate will win in 2024. But the democrats have destroyed any hope I once had in them. I have to try something different. And withdrawing support from the democrats is the only thing I can think to do.
Yea I don't think you're wrong at all, I'm exhausted with the Democrats and really, really don't want to vote for Joe Biden. I also live in a red state, in a super rural area that I know for a fact will go Trump during the election.
It's not that I see voting for a third party candidate as useless, I just wish there was a candidate we could all rally behind that would even have somewhat of a fair shot against the two party system. I feel like there's enough anger that we could get there but it doesn't seem like anyone can agree (or maybe they do and I'm just uninformed) even just to take enough of the votes away from the Dems that it would scare them into changing. but as we've seen in past elections, that would need to be a massive chunk and for this election it feels like the left is so unorganized that they're not going to get the message through.
Which is not me telling anyone they should vote, obviously it's a losing game all around. Reading Trump's plan just really, really scared me if I'm being honest, it seems that attacking the rights of everyone except white male gun owners is the main goal of his entire campaign. And I honestly am worried that he'll double down on supporting Israel, which is not to say Biden isn't towing that line, but the conservatives I live around are SO pro-Israel and Trump will do anything to get approval from his base. And after Roe v Wade I totally believe Trump has enough support in government to come through on some of these promises he's talking about.
Idk the right thing to do if there is one, I'm mostly just scared.

Can I ask what you mean by “men’s rights?” I know men face issues because of the patriarchy, but could you explain to me how misandry effects men’s rights? Don’t men live in a privileged position, say for example, not having to worry about things like the debate for bodily autonomy that Roe v. Wade brings up? And I’m not talking about trans men that are included within that conversation, I’m talking cishet white men who don’t face oppression. What does the phrase “men’s rights” mean in that lens? How can cishet white men be oppressed by misandry?
I actually have an ask about this, asking me what I mean by men's rights from April that I haven't answered yet. I've started working on it though and stopped because of school and it's just been in my drafts for the time being. However, I'll get it out sometime before August , hopefully. I won't go into detail here because as I said, I have that ask.  If you want, and you're not already following this blog, you can message me and I'll message you when it's finished or something like that.
> but could you explain to me how misandry effects men’s rights?
I don’t understand what you mean by that. Misandry is:  dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against men (i.e. the male sex)
Similarly to feminism fighting against misogyny, men’s rights fights against misandry
> Don’t men live in a privileged position, say for example, not having to worry about things like the debate for bodily autonomy that Roe v. Wade brings up?
I don’t believe men are privileged and I think that kind of talk (and I’m not saying this a some sort of accusation or something against you) leads to less compassion for men’s issues. That may not be the way everyone who believes that feels, but some do and it can slowly come to that over time. Those people will start looking at men as though they have it easy or easier and that is incorrect. Both men and women have their own problems.
As for bodily anatomy, circumcision falls under that.
> What does the phrase “men’s rights” mean in that lens? How can cishet white men be oppressed by misandry?
Respectfully, it doesn’t matter. Them being white or straight or not trans doesn’t mean they’re not going to feel the consequences of misandry. One such example is rape. men, as a whole, don’t really get recognized as rape victims. That is one of the big problems men face. It’s not even just with the regular people--it’s the laws set in place. The laws are excluding them and I’ll show you two examples from the response I have for that ask:
This is Georgia 's law (From the US)
As mandated by O.C.G.A. § 16-6-1, the offense of rape occurs when there is any penetration of the female sex organ by the male sex organ of:
a female forcibly and against her will, or
a female who is less than ten years of age.
This is from Switzerland:
Any person who forces a person of the female sex by threats or violence, psychological pressure or by being made incapable of resistance to submit to sexual intercourse is liable to a custodial sentence of from one to ten years.
That’s a problem, as I said. Every rape victim should be recognized and given help and justice. But how is that supposed to happen in situations like this? Then you have the regular people; the people who who laugh and make jokes and all. That’s not cool and especially not on someone’s mental health. And I acknowledge that there are men doing it as well which is wrong. But there are also plenty of women who don’t take the notion of male victims seriously either.
Anyway, the answer to the ask that I will get done eventually, will go into much more detail. It will feature other topics like homelessness, how  men are treated with their mental health differently and a lack of resources, the discrimination within the legal system, etc etc

Also thank you for the ask!

Let’s open this can of worms, pro life versus pro abortion.
So did you catch the phrasing, some will say pro choice versus anti abortion. The way it is phrased automatically shows which side you fall on the debate. Or at the very least it is an interesting tell.
Everyone has an opinion and of late I am struggling with many others’ opinions. I recently read a piece by Amanda Marcotte titled: “Keep her legs closed!” Republicans are mad one of them said the quiet part out loud.
Her opening is that Republicans definitely want to punish women for having sex- but they don’t want voters to figure that out. And then ties her argument to the Dobbs v Jackson decision overturning Roe v Wade and then ties all this to the idea that all Republicans have a long standing dream of using forced child birth to punish women for having sex.
I seriously struggle with this over handed reach as to why people are against abortion. Could there be a few Republicans who fit her description? Probably, but to lump all people who believe that life begins at conception and many of us truly believe all life should be protected is definitely reaching. The actual definition of pro life is the respect and dignity of life from conception to natural death. And yes there are some politicians who are pro life for political expediency, not because they have true understanding or belief in what it means to be pro life. Yet for Ms. Marcotte to espouse this monstrous definition that all of us want to punish women for having sex is absurd. And as always I do need to say I am not a Republican, but an independent conservative, but for her purposes I do not think she worries about that difference.
We have too much extremism in this country as it is, so to lump everybody in one category to brand everyone sex haters to me is an extreme position. And I am being a bit short on purpose.
The pro life pro choice argument is one of the most difficult discussions to have in this country. So her choosing the verbiage “…punish women for having sex” or me calling her opinion monstrous does not do the debate any favors. Yet we, as humans, all fall into this emotional trap when we try to discuss topics we have hard opinions. And this debate is top of the list in this country for rousing our deepest angers.
I truly believe that life begins at conception so I struggle with the concept of pro choice. Yet I am not here to say women or men cannot have sex. I wouldn’t be here without it. And should it be considered that if we believe in the dignity of life from conception to natural death, where do we draw the line at natural death? Is a women suffering in child birth a reason to have an abortion to save her life? That is a damn good and difficult question to answer. The choice between saving one of two lives is a struggle for mankind in general much less for one doctor that has about thirty seconds to make a decision. So I believe we should not condemn any one for making that choice either way.
Yet where do the nuances become an easier choice? Well, that depends if you say, pro life or pro choice. So that leads back to the circular arguments that each side will make to justify their decision. And most of us tend to be birds of a feather that flock together. The vast majority of my friends are pro life so I would tend to use our arguments in a discussion with someone who is pro choice. And I will say unequivocally we are right. Life begins at conception. So how do you explain dignity of life until natural death and for the unborn child that dignity exists and it is up to us to protect their life since they cannot.
Some will argue that since an unborn child cannot exist outside the womb that allowing a woman to choose to make decisions regarding her body preempts the life argument. And honestly I may have missed the exact argument there so if you want to clarify it, please do in the comments, just be respectful to the debate and not use emotions.
And Ms. Marcotte’s article does not immediately reference a religion argument, yet she heavily attacks the general concept that all or most Republicans (again not the verbiage pro lifers, but Republicans, I am curious as to why) and specifically calls out a State Senator in New Jersey, Sen. Durr who apparently said “a women does have a choice, keep her legs closed” which seems to have set her head on fire and inspired her to write her piece. And apparently this State Senator had liked some other anti woman phrasing. Yet if she really wants to make headway this anger fueled post is not going to change any minds. And as I said earlier this national debate is one we struggle with mightily with entrenched opinions And we all know how difficult it can be to change an opinion. I once wrote a short story to try and create a way around the debate and to change people’s hearts. For true pro lifers we know that this is not a debate, but an understanding of the value of life and to get people to understand this we need to change what is in the heart. And yes we struggle when people who call themselves pro lifers stick their foot in their mouth ie the above referenced Senator. Yet I feel that Ms. Marcotte needs to be called out for lumping the entire pro life debate into a false narrative to vent her anger with one person or a few people who truly do not represent what it means to be pro life.
We know we are human and have faults. And maybe all our are arguments aren’t perfect, but we believe that people should be engaged with each other, believe women have the right to choose who their partners are and to engage with them sexually. We know that saying keep your legs closed is not the answer. We were or are young. We know we can make mistakes, yet to vilify us for I think reasons not stated is beyond the pale.
In the Gospels there is the story of the woman about to be stoned due to accusations of adultery. Jesus steps in and calls out everyone there, saying those who have not sinned cast the first stone. And then they all leave and I love this part, starting with the elders.
Not one of us is perfect, but that is one of the main reasons to be pro life. We need to treat each other with dignity and respect until our natural death. Sure our politicians could do better in helping with adoption laws, better healthcare programs for young and old, leading by example and not denigrating each other, and so much more, but to arbitrarily attack a group of people using labels because a few people present a false front is not an answer to solving this debate or more hopefully to a change of heart. Until then as pro lifers we need to remember we are not perfect and cannot lecture or berate especially us elders. That will do more for the change of heart for people who call themselves pro choice than any argument. Maybe one day Ms. Marcotte will be able to see beyond what is fueling her anger to get to the real answer.

July 13th
Hey y’all! Okay wednesday was super fun- maybe my favorite day? It was pretty packed, and we didn’t even leave campus. There were 4 speakers, all super interesting and engaging!
First Eric Lee, a photojournalist who focuses on Asian American identity in his photos (also, I got his permission to cite an article of his in a paper which is awesome).
Then, we heard from Alan Byrd, the Dean of Admissions at George Mason University about the college application process, which is always important to know at the level we’re all at here.
Next was breakout rooms with a lot less people seeing one speaker. Personally, I was able to listen to Anna (Rose) Layden, and she was so cool!! I say this everytime, but she was my favorite. Honestly, everyone we hear from is awesome in so many different ways it’s part of what makes this conference and journalism itself so amazing.
I got a photo with her and everything, and she went to a college I really want to go to so I’m definitely gonna ask her about it. Her perspective was super interesting, because she was really fresh out of college, graduated last year, and she’s still in the sort of honeymoon phase of photojournalism.
She still genuinely enjoys at, has nothing bad to say, goes out every day… it’s really nice to have a perspective like that after all the more experienced journalists having more negative experiences (which obviously isn’t a bad thing- just a factual one). Also her work is so awesome she’s worked hard to crest a unique style and it definitely shows- I 1000% recommend looking it up, she’s going places.
Our final speaker of the day was Tom Jackman. I was worried, because it was 9 pm and I was so worried I would be too tired to pay attention- but he was amazing. Think Brian Lamb style of presentation, but somehow more engaging. He’s a really interesting guy on his own, definitely check him out- what he did with us, is that he wrote a story after he interviewed some of us.
He asked us our opinions about the media coverage of the Roe v. Wade decision, and there was so many different ideas people had, it was amazing. He then used peoples comments to write an article (while he did that, a group member and I had a really fun conversation about books we love from school). Definitely really interesting and different.
Other than speakers, yesterday we also did a simulation thing. We were in groups or alone, I worked alone (like I wanted to be), and assigned a story. We had the story we needed to work on and a bit of background on our character kinda, and our goal was to pitch the idea to 2 editors (2 of our group mates assigned that role) to get it on the front page.
It was so fun! I really enjoyed it- I had a story about rising opioid addiction (not a real scenario) and my paper mentioned my cousin had died due to that, so I wrote it from the angle of community and talking to people affected to comfort them kinda deal. It was a local news thing.
I wrote a really detailed why I should be on the front page, specific people I had talked to, I had a real statistic… I had a ton of fun. I won, too! Both my roommates group and I made the front page news (well, in the roleplay) and I’m very proud of us. It was definitely a fun way to see the different angles people can take on a story! I could write about it for ages but unfortunately this blog can’t be TOO long, ha.
As you can tell, yesterday was amazing, and my suitemates and I were so awake at 10:30 we hung out and watched part of My Big Fat Greek Wedding… so fun.
If you couldn’t tell, I’m trying to sprinkle in some more fun little moments I had. Not all of them, still saving some for me, but it’s definitely important that I’ve had such an amazing time here. And sorry if this blog hasn’t shown that.
That said! Thanks for reading again, check the instagram (toby_wjmc22) for a post soon, and we’ll be seeing you!

People will say Islam is an Arab religion without knowing the context of when Islam came and why the message of Islam came to the Arabs in the first place.
In a hadith mentioned in Sahih Bukhari, Heraclius had called upon Abu Sufyan to enquire about the Prophet Muhammad (saw) after Heraclius was satisfied with what he had heard about the Prophet (saw) he told Abu Sufyan in regards to the Prophet "I knew it (from the scriptures) that he was going to appear but I did not know that he would be from amongst you".
Why did he say this?
Well, at the time the Arabs were looked down upon. Before Islam, Arabs would bury their daughters alive because they believed having a daughter was disgraceful, they would view women as objects of sextual pleasures only with no rights at all amongst other things.
So Islam was not first sent down to the Arabs because Arabs were the God chosen race but because they were a people who were lost and in most need of guidance during the time. It is important to remember that islam was brought down for all mankind as Allah says in the Quran “And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a giver of glad tidings and a warner to all mankind, but most men know not.” [34:28]
In a narrations in sahih Al Bukhari, there was a man who was always depressed and sad when he was around the Prophet (saw), the Prophet (saw) then asked him "why are you always sad?" the man replied "O Rasulullah! I committed such a sin during the days of ignorance, I fear that Allah will not forgive me even after accepting Islam!" When asked about the sin the man told the Prophet of how he had buried his daughter alive during his day's of ignorance and his daughter's last words were “Don’t lose your trust!” which she repeated over and over again until the sand was filled to the point he couldn't hear her voice, after he had finished he looked up to find everyone including the Prophet (saw) crying to which the Prophet (saw) then said to him "If I had been allowed to punish a person for his crimes before embracing Islam, I would have punished you.”
The whole point of this is now we are seeing the way women are treated in this society and I'm not gonna go into Roe v. Wade but my focus is more within the so called "Muslim world" of today where daily we hear of men killing and harassing women for rejecting them and asking for divorce, basically going back to the jahiliyyah days.
In another narration in sahih Al Bukhari, a woman named Khansa Bint Khidam went over to the house of the Prophet (saw) and did not find him there so Aisha (ra) told her to wait for him, when the Prophet returned Khansa complained that her father had forced her to marry a man she didn't want, the Prophet (saw) then informed her that fathers have no right to marry off their daughters to men their daughters did not want and then he went on to tell her "your marriage is invalid, go marry whomever you want."
There are two important things we should take from this hadith. The first being the fact that the Prophet (saw) constantly affirmed women's rights even when that meant going against their families and the second is that in Islam among all the other rights of women is that they have the right to refuse marriage and I know this is a basic right but I am pointing this out so we do not confuse the "Arab culture" with Islam.
Today we have ignorant, misinformed, small minded non-Muslim men that know absolutely nothing about Islam praising Islam because in their pea size brain they think Islam aligns with their misogynistic views and to see Muslim men feed into these people's egos not only infuriates me but worries me at the same time not only for myself and every other woman out there but more so for my nieces and every girl growing up in this messed up world right now. As parents we need to do better with how we raise our sons.

ok so...I need to get this off my chest....about what's been going on in my life and how I feel about Roe V Wade overturning...and not gonna lie I was gonna just keep everything to myself and not mention anything but-in light of roe v wade , I want to be honest with you guys here & especially my followers.
I'm pro choice & pro abortion.
not really a surprise if you've seen my likes on twitter & tumblr but there ya go.
as for how I feel about roe v wade overturning? its surreal. Its....nightmarish and I'm not even sure if I have it in me to cry as it feels like this year has gotten worse & worse for me and everyone...like I don't even think I have the tears even if I wanted to...as I just feel so emotionally exhausted and trapped.
Tumblr media
As for what's been going on in my life?...too much. just too much to be honest. A week ago I was diagnosed with ocd which was also sureal...so I've been going through cbt & exposure therapy for it-which already feels like im climbing a mountain -but so far this type of treatment looks promising.
besides going to my cbt & exposure therapy I've been making appointments with my gynecologist to get my tubes removed. It's something I've been planning on doing since I was little as I've never wanted kids.
I didn't want to say anything to my followers or write here about it -as I was worried what others would think in light of roe v wade but honestly...I dont think I should feel shame in my choice of not wanting kids.
Tumblr media
Already my family hasn't really taken to the idea and seem a bit uncomfortable about my choice but honestly...I don't want my uterus to define me, my life or my marriage.
I've never felt that maternal extinct and in light of roe v wade overturning and being told by the government you have no say over your body..
Tumblr media
...it just feels comforting knowing once my tubes are cut out I dont belong to them or anyone.
To me sex isn't something bad or lewd and a baby shouldn't have to be the end result consequence of it. children should never be seen as a consequence.
Tumblr media
Everyone has the right to express their love to their partner and every couple has that right to decide whether they want to start a family.
and as of now my husband and I are making plans to move to a blue state that wont dehumanize us-yes we'll take a financial hit but to us it's worth it. Already I've been hearing republicans excitedly discuss 'whats next?' and so far on their list its getting rid of gay marriage, trans rights, and interracial marriage. My husband and I are an interracial couple.
So moving away seems best.
and while I'd love to stay here and fight...I don't see any sense in voting in a red state that's just going to suppress my vote. As well as paying tax money to a state that finds dehumanizing others morally right. I certainly don't want my money going to my governor just so he can continue stuffing his face with cake and flying his private jet to go spout off hate to news crews.
right now finding somewhere safe is my main goal for now.

“But what about the icky nasty kinksters 🥺” bitch, women are literally going to die because of abortion bans and all you can think about is moral grandstanding. “If you don’t agree with me ur not a feminist cause that means your prokink 😡” I don’t have the time or energy to give a single rip about imaginary freaks right now because I LIVE SOMEWHERE WHERE IM ABOUT TO HAVE LESS BODILY AUTONOMY THAN A CORPSE! My state already has shit abortion laws and it’s about to get infinitely worse. You don’t even live here. I don’t care what county you “meant” to be talking about, abortion conversations got a whole lot more busy in the past two days because SCOTUS decided that women do not have the right to their own internal organs. You are distracting from the conversation. I don’t want to hear anti-abortion sentiments from some cunt who lives in a country who has abortion rights. Omfg, you live somewhere with better abortion laws than my state has EVER had. The sheer amount of privilege your shit take comes from is fucking unbelievable. You have the privilege to worry about stupid stuff like imaginary kinksters. Most women don’t!! THERE ARENT EVEN EXCEPTIONS FOR RAPE OR INCEST, WHICH ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO PROVE ANYWAY AND UTTERLY USELESS. I can have literally everything taken away from me if some scrote decides to rape me. I could fucking die if that happened and it wouldn’t matter. There are politicians advocating for not even aborting when the pregnancy is ectopic. You can be arrested and charged for miscarrying!!! And all you care about are freaks on reddit????? I never want to hear this shit from another “feminist” ever again. You can take your opinion and shove it up your ass. This is literally the worst take I’ve seen from radblr. It’s sick and disgusting that you thought this was a good thing to post in the first place and even worse that you keep defending your wholly anti-feminist take. Jesus christ, what a lack of empathy or compassion for other women. It’s so fucking selfish. And I haven’t even acknowledged that most of the reproductive rights we have at all could be rolled back, including all birth control which btw is the only thing keeping me from bleeding out once a month, because they hinge on roe v. wade and all the privacy laws that influenced. It’s not even just womens rights, since I know you don’t care about those! Roe v. wade has so much resting on it and they are just taking it away like it’s nothing. We didn’t even get to elect these people and we have no way to influence them. This is shit that started before I was even born. They know what they are about to do is unpopular with the majority of the American public but they don’t care. We are losing +50 years of progress in a second and you only care about the “wrong” kind of woman getting an abortion. There is no hope here. I hope a meteor takes out my entire country tomorrow. I want it all wiped off the face of the earth. I’d be happier if everyone here was dead. I’d be happier dead. I hope the entire SCOTUS spontaneously drops dead. We’re all going to let this happen and no one will care. I don’t want to hear another stupid take about abortion and I wish everyone who disagrees with me would die. I’m so fucking tired. An old high school classmate messaged me saying he wants to rape me because I was vocally pro-choice and he wants to punish me. I’m sure other women here are getting the same kinds of threats. These are my internal organs!! I should have the right to my internal organs!!! Always! Idc even if a woman had consensual sex and got pregnant, she still has the rights to her own insides!!! If you have nothing useful to say then just stay quiet. No one asked you about how you felt about the “morality” of abortion. What a stupid thing to try and answer in the first place. No one wanted your dog-shit opinion.
Anon please get help. I'm not even saying this for snarky Internet clout. I really do believe you need professional help

I know we are concerned about trump rolling back many rights such as Roe v Wade and gay marriage etc, and if there was ever a time it would be done it would be now with the court the way it is but I wonder sometimes if those two issues are kinda like carrots dangling in front of a horse. A major issue we have is the left has nothing to unite them there are so many ideas about what needs to be done and it's impossible to have everyone be represented by one person. (1)

the right seems to push most everything to the side for the issues of abortion and gay marriage, and I guess guns and money. To me it feels like there would be benefits to stringing them along in order to get their votes year after year. Fighting to keep a law doesn’t give the same fire as fighting to change something as seen by how many on the left are willing to not vote cause Biden is exactly like trump despite the very real threat of the loss of these rights. I don’t mean like there is no reason to worry/vote cause it won’t happen, I think the threat the most serious its ever been but I wondered your thoughts on how much these issues are used to keep the GOP votes rolling in or if you think they’d struggle once those issues were gone or am I totally wrong, ha. It’s frustrating as a christian (or was idk anymore its turned so ugly) to watch others give up their morals for something they might not get just cause they are so simple to manipulate imo
I won’t lie to you, anon, this was... hard to make sense of, so let me open by restating what I think you’re trying to say? it seems like maybe you’re arguing that abortion and gay marriage are hot button issues that generate a controversial polarity where everyone is driven to vote based on their position on those issues, so if those issues were no longer on the table there would be nothing to keep people actively participating. it also seems like maybe you resent this because you’d like to vote your morals, but based on these controversial social issues you’re being forced to take a political position you don’t align with fully.
here’s what I think you’re right about: the american two-party system forces a polarity that favors centrism, or has up to this point. yes, the left is a collection of extremely variant positions that are forced further and further center-right as a party as a result of the right becoming increasingly fundamentalist. this is arguably the greatest flaw in american policy construction: the founders did not believe that anyone after george washington would ever garner 51% of the popular vote, meaning that there would always be a tie and then the senate, representing the states, would choose the next president. basically, they set up a system much more like the british bicameral legislature than what we have now, where the states would select the next president from among themselves. but because the federalists and democratic republicans mobilized the way they did, we have the system we have now, where every issue is essentially black and white; either yes or no.
dichotomies are inherently problematic, and while I do not agree that the left lacks unity in their policies, you’re correct that a “true” left does not exist in the united states; aka bernie and even warren should not be democrats if biden is also a democrat. that’s fair, or would be, if we did not have only two ideologies to choose from.
I do think there are some flaws with your premise (? as I interpret it) that these specific social issues are “hot” and/or controversial enough to drive people to the polls vs. being the actual, true defining issues for each party. I disagree. the politics of abortion are not about the value of human life, but the autonomy of women. the politics of marriage are not about whether homosexuality is morally reprehensible, but about whether the state should allow faith-based policy to control how two consenting individuals choose to live. in my mind, these positions are consistent with the concept that government should interfere against systemic prejudices, especially where it’s necessary to maintain our foundational separation of church and state.
the fact is also that the right is a mess. a true conservative party in this country would oppose ALL government regulation; they should be anti-gun regulation AND pro-choice, and essentially pro-everything that isn’t government interference. the fact that the republican party doesn’t fall within these theoretical lines is a flaw as a result of who holds power in that party: white christian men. in order to maintain their social power, they bend their political agenda wherever necessary to ensure that women and minorities do not gain autonomy where they have always maintained control. this is what unites the right, which means that the “left,” which is really more center AND everything left of center, supports politics that do dignify minorities.
would this be the case if we had multiple political parties? probably not, so your frustration is shared by many. you’ve probably heard this many times, but essentially the argument for biden, even by those who know he will not provide them the policies their consciences dictate, is that he has already shown he—and the party—can be pushed further left. he did not sign on with concepts of the green new deal until bernie and liz warren’s campaigns dictated that politically he needed to, at which point AOC signed on to help him build his own. so is he perfect? no. but if biden wins, there is room to keep fighting for what we want from democratic policy; he is responsive to public pressure. if 45 wins, we lose, end of story. fascism cannot be pushed.
morals are difficult to argue when it comes to politics. for example, the very popular but nonsensical “socially liberal but fiscally conservative” dichotomy is an untenable paradox that a person can only hold as a beneficiary of the existing system. when only one group of people has maintained generational/inherited wealth that allows them to benefit from a lack of social programs and government intervention, of course there is no such thing as having only one foot in the water. the overlap between the christian agenda and white supremacy is also difficult to separate, because while theologically christianity should promote certain values, christianity as an institution was born from imperialism, forced conversion, and a doctrine of constant proselytization. I say this as a catholic; I don’t dislike religious beliefs. but the way religion motivates political decisions is fundamentally flawed.
if your argument (or the argument of those around you) is that the problem with this election is that the left is a collection of ideologies lumped together in order to oppose some very narrow policy decisions, yes, you’re right. but if we pushed even remotely left from where we are now, we might be closer to the center, and then we can continue to push left. I would argue not that this is a time to abandon your principles just to win the presidency, but to at least be unselfish enough to realize that institutional change must be affected incrementally; to recognize that even if your life is not severely affected by 45 and the republican party winning over biden and the centrist-dems, far-right or alt-right policies do undoubtedly cause damage to countless others. you may not get everything you want from biden, but the opportunity to continue to achieve policy decisions you support is there.
try not to allow others around you to create a false dichotomy where this is somehow a choice between two evils; it isn’t. it’s a choice between a closed door and an open one, and even a baby step is a step.

Call your representatives
I’ve been meaning to post about these abortion bans for awhile now. I’ve just needed some time to truly digest everything and do a little research. But now that I have done that, I wanted to use this time to really get the word across. Let everyone know what their choices are.
For starters, let’s talk about the motives behind all of these bans. Now, keep in mind that I use the word ban not bill. Because all of these pieces of legislation are, in fact, BANS, and they are near-complete bans on all abortions. So, I implore all of you to use the word ban when talking about these legislations because it emphasizes the true negativity they hold, and it begins to invoke the sense of false narration they all have.
Besides that, the reason these bans have been passed is not because of pro-life. This has nothing to do with pro-life. In fact, if these lawmakers wanted to save lives, they would worry about all of the children that live below the federal poverty threshold. They would worry about all the children that go hungry every single day. Or they would worry about the education of children. Or the ones that currently do not have health insurance. Or they would worry about the increasing infant mortality rate. If these politicians truly cared about life, these are the things that should be worrying about, and so much more. Except they’re not. So, this leaves the true reason why these bans are being passed.
Control.
For all of history, men have tried to control women in anyway they can. With Brett Kavanaugh now as a justice on the Supreme Court, there is a true threat to Roe v. Wade. These politicians know that. They also know that their bans will directly violate Roe v. Wade, which “affirmed that access to safe and legal abortion is a constitutional right,” according to Planned Parenthood. By violating this constitutional right, they know there will be judicial action taken against them. And there is a potential that all of this will be appealed to the Supreme Court. With Kavanaugh as a justice, there is a real threat of Roe v. Wade being overturned. So, no. These men are not trying to save lives. They are not pro-life. Because these men that are making these laws are the same men that have spoken horrifically about rape and rape victims. They are the same men that supported this country when they locked children in cages. These men do not care about any life. They are merely trying to take away women’s (and people that are able to get pregnant’s) control of their own bodies.
Also, let’s take a second to discuss the false narration behind Georgia’s ban. I currently live in Atlanta, and I knew the second that Brian Kemp elected this would happen. This ban is so incredibly dangerous because it perpetrates this false narrative of a “fetal heartbeat.” This ban criminalizes women that decide to have an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, when doctors can detect a “heartbeat.” At six weeks, there is no heart that beats. In fact, what doctors can hear is activity within a 4-millimeter wide growth which is called a fetal pole. They use the word heartbeat, knowing full well it is not a heart that is beating, to invoke a false image. To cast a negative light on women that pursue abortions. To make them seem like monsters for “killing” what is perceived to be a fully realized person, though at six weeks, the fetus is no bigger than a grain of rice. At six weeks, many women do not even know they are pregnant. Most doctors do not schedule appointments with women until their eighth week of pregnancy. This is a ban on abortions.
Now, let’s talk about Alabama’s ban. Alabama’s new ban does not criminalize the women that get abortions but the doctors and midwives that carry out the abortions during any stage of pregnancy. And the worst part, it does not take rape or incest into account. Meaning this ban now FORCES a woman to carry her rapist’s baby with no regards to the trauma she will have to undergo. Our justice system has been historically forgiving to men that rape, and the victims of these rapists continue to suffer because of that. Now, this country places laws into effect that will only further damage these victims. It is truly unjust.
After all of this, please keep in mind these laws do not go into effect until January 2020. Call your representatives. Call them. Email them. Do whatever you need to do to tell them that this is not okay, and you will not stand by this. We have to fight before it is too late. We need these people to know that we will not stand for our reproductive rights being taken away. North Carolina is trying to legally redefine the meaning of consent, and by doing so, they are trying to redefine what it means to be raped. And if rape is redefined, then those that can seek an abortion because they were raped is redefined. We cannot stand for this. There was a GOP lawmaker that used the term “consensual rape” when discussing abortion. This is the day in age we are living in. Our bodies are trying to be stripped from us. And this does not only affect cisgendered women. It affects other minorities that are able to get pregnant. Trans men and non-binary people can also be affected by this. And we must fight to protect them as well because they have a part in this narrative. That needs to be recognized.
Call your representatives. Do it before it is too late. Because there will come a time where it is. If conservative politicians get their way, there will be a time when it is too late.
In the great words of Rachel Green, herself, “No uterus, no opinion.”

You want to take away safe abortions? Let’s talk about this logically. Roe v. Wade is a case in which women had a breakthrough in history.  Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113, was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides a fundamental "right to privacy" that protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose whether or not to have an abortion. Women are the ones who give birth. They give life. Why would we oppress the rights of our mothers, daughters, granddaughters, neighbors, friends, and anyone else? Is it because we don’t all agree with the procedure because of our beliefs? This Directly violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Then let me ask you why is it okay for States to go and change their laws based on what GOD or they believe should be allowed? You are not protecting women you are harming them more than you could ever imagine. This is where the rights we all grew up learning are coming into jeopardy, and unfortunately, there is so much wrong going on with our country that the president isn’t doing anything to help protect the rights of these women. As everyone knows, he has little compassion or respect for women to begin with. Why should we as women need to be fighting this hard again for our rights that our ancestors already fought so hard to get for us? We as Americans are taking a step backward in history and it will cause arising issues and trust of women in our country, and if it is not safe for women they will leave and find somewhere safe to live. Women turning on each other is getting worse, and the fact that it was left to women to decide if other women should go to jail if she has a miscarriage and or has an abortion just shows you how broken we are becoming as a nation, or that a little girl or women were raped was GODS “silver lining” . How can you say that this wasn’t a decision that was influenced by religion? Women are going to be afraid of getting pregnant, and birthing rates are going to be at an all-time low if we continue to proceed the way we are. In my opinion, in all this, the worst thing in all this is that these are going to be innocent women who are going to suffer the most when we live in a sexist society to where a man who rapes a 12-year-old girl and gets custody of her child and the fact that we have the means to allow this 12-year-old girl to not have to go through a life-changing event at all and allow her to heal from what has happened to her. Or the fact that miscarriages are just a natural cause and you know sometimes things just happen. Or already make women like me who have trouble getting pregnant to need to worry if something goes wrong am I going to be arrested for something that just was out of my control. But let's be honest, we have the worst treatment of mothers in this nation. Where a mother isn’t entitled to paid time off to spend it with her baby, or where a mother could give birth with very little help from the government because there just isn’t the funding to take care of all these babies being born. It’s time we stop moving backward and we all start moving forward not just as human beings but as a country and not let history repeat its self.

The Softcore Thomas Friedman
So please share this Cialis discount with anyone you know who may need it. About the effectiveness and the quality of results they provide, both generic Zocor and generic Lipitor can offer what individuals need. Rather, it is termed as the weekender pill by men who have used them and have had positive results with it. Men can easily get cured with help of proper medication and treatment. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an extremely common problem which many men still do not feel comfortable talking about with either their loved ones or with medical professionals. Your online consultation will establish what other medical problems you may have and what medicines you might be taking for these and if these are compatible with taking CIALIS. Generic medicines are thought a very good option these days as they give the same impact as there labeled counterpart but at very smaller cost worth . Something as simple as a 10-minute walk can give the brain a needed jolt. Nonetheless, both drugs are safe for general use, and can provide health advantages that outweigh the more minor side effects. Cialis (Tadalafil) have some possible and fewer side effects, but not everyone who takes Cialis will experience side effects. A generic version of Cialis® (Eli Lilly) tadalafil tablets (2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg) for the United States market has been annouced by Teva Pharmaceuticals, in a first-to-file launch. The truth is a generic type of any medicine is one of the finest substances that is used during a drugs production . These drugs do not require prescription; it can be purchased directly from online stores. You can be ready to engage in sexual activity in no time. Take a dose as soon as you remember if you plan to engage in sexual activity on that day. If you missed a dose of Generic Cialis, there is no need to get worried. Licensed pharmacies. Many information on cialis, take cialis exactly as directed. You can save money on Cialis 20 mg using online pharmacies. There is well-documented information about drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis and the side effects they can cause. Alpha-blockers can be used to treat high blood pressure. Cipla make medications to treat arthritis, depression, obesity and many other health conditions and it sell its products in more than 190 countries worldwide. ◦Medicines called nitrates. Nitrates are commonly used to treat chest pain, which is a symptom of heart disease. Nitrates and Tadalafil don't tend to get a long very well. TORONTO, July 18, 2016 /CNW/ - Lilly Canada has reduced the price of Cialis® (tadalafil) tablets for all available doses, effective immediately. HOUSE PASSES ANTI-ABORTION BILL ON ANNIVERSARY OF ROE V. WADE The bill would limit federal funding through Medicaid for abortions and is a “watered-down” version of the original offering that the GOP thought might alienate moderates. The difference lies in the fact that generics are more economical than the original. The odds are overwhelmingly against that happening in fact. Often, these companies will say that they are based in Canada, but in reality are based thousands of miles away in Africa or India. There is hardly any girl that would say "no", because you are giving her a chance and just asking her number to reach at. Not to mention all those "natural" ingredients on the label, which are untested, unstudied, online pharmacy and definitely not FDA-approved. In hindsight this is too strong a criticism of Lyns comments and opinions which are based on many unfortunate and sad years of direct involvement in and around PCa. There are a lot of issues to work through because of the history of personal experience that you have. The reason is not the inefficiency or ineffective drug but the lack of knowledge people often have about it and its origin. The information and facts available even so, is not at all times very clear and does not constantly let you know what cialis is utilized for and the reason why you may require it . Patients should also understand that if they decide to begin taking the daily option, the effects may not be immediate.

Roe v. Wade and its Impact on Youth and the Latinx Community
Tumblr media
By: Sayuri Toribio, Youth of COLOR Fellow The Supreme Court decision of 1973, Roe vs. Wade, will be celebrating its 49th anniversary on January 22nd - and it may very well be its last. And while I may only be 19 years young, I have known that Roe has been an integral part of history that I didn’t need to question or worry about disappearing. But after what I watched happen last year with the over 90 restrictions across the country, I became scared about what it would mean to me and other youth if we were to lose Roe. Access to legal abortion, coupled with access to birth control, has had a powerful and positive impact on the health and livelihood of young people who have grown up with Roe v. Wade. And just as it is important to recognize the work that has been done to keep Roe, I also think a lot about how Roe has been the floor, not the ceiling. I know that while abortion may be legal, access is not always equitable for everyone. Roe has not ensured that all those who need abortion are actually able to obtain one. There are so many topics that go unspoken, and are considered taboo to talk about with our parents, friends, or community such as safe sex, contraception, healthy relationships, sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), and abortion. Even when I ask my friends if they know what reproductive justice means, many of them do not know what such framework exists at all. And it shouldn’t be this way. There should be no shame or stigma to talk about safe sex or contraception; there should be no shame or stigma about what it means to have access to reproductive health, and what abortions may be. On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must recognize that there’s a right every one of our community members deserves - and that’s access to a safe and legal abortion. Which is why I believe that the future of Roe must begin with: having conversations about reproductive healthcare, understanding that abortion rights are human rights, and recognizing that when our community thrives, we all do as well. COLOR’s reproductive justice tenets have allowed us to have a lens that incorporates race, gender, class, immigrant status, and sexual orientation into our work. And at the center of it all, our comunidad. Regardless of what the Supreme Court decides as the future for abortion rights, we will no longer compromise. Access to abortion will be safe, legal, and accessible. In order to get this work done, we know we will need to continue to build a movement that is local, grassroots, intersectional, and focused on decentralizing power and resources and instead investing it with those who have been and will be most affected by repealing close to 50 years of precedent – our Latinx community. Here are some ways you can join us in this cause to protect abortion access and lead with reproductive justice values:
Share your abortion story or support your local clinics
Support the Reproductive Health Equity Act by signing our petition so that abortion acces is protected in the state of Colorado. Read our story here via Ms. Mayhem magazine.

BLOG POST #2: MEDIA ASSESSMENT OF ISSUE
1.     Conservative: https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/march-for-life-why-pro-life-and-pro-woman-go-hand-in-hand
Liberal: http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/the-more-abortion-rights-are-threatened-the-more-americans-support-them
Objective: https://time.com/5809556/texas-ohio-abortion-coronavirus/
2.   Conservative:
SUBJECT The main point of this article is to make people aware that not only does the baby in the womb die but so does the connection that baby has with the mother. This source is trying to convey that abortion is not pro-woman at all. The central message of the document is that all children deserve the right to live and women shouldn’t be robbed of the connection that they have with the child in the womb.  AUTHOR Jeanne Mancini is the president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund and directs the organization’s commitment to restoring a culture of life in the United States, most notably through the annual March for Life event in Washington, D.C. She worked with the Family Research Council (FRC), where she focused on issues related to the inherent dignity of the human person, and for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Office of the Secretary. CONTEXT This article was published in 2016 right before the 43rd March for Life in Washinton D.C. which has an impact on this article because it could possibly be written in hopes to persuade people and try and get them to join the pro-life side for a larger turn out at the March for Life; which, in turn, leads to more backing of the cause.  AUDIENCE This source was created for people going to the March for Life and people who are on the fence about abortion. It is targeted toward people who believe that being pro-life disregards the mother and her feelings. Thus, it could be trying to persuade people in to believing that abortion is also killing the mother-child bond. PERSPECTIVE This article is one sided and it is making people aware that not only does the baby in the womb die but so does the connection that baby has with the mother. I agree with this statement because I believe that the bond between mother and child is unbreakable and it should never be broken. I also believe that abortion is killing an innocent life and taking opportunities away from the child.
SIGNIFICANCE The facts of this article are that a woman and her child are “unity of 2 persons” and over 57 million lives have aborted and taken since the start of Roe v. Wade. They also explain that human rights are indivisible, including unborn.
Liberal:
SUBJECT The point of this article is to persuade people into believing that if you deny people the right to abort their children, the more Americans will support abortion. The message of this article is that the right to abort children is a human right and should never be taken away because that would be unconstitutional.  AUTHOR Steve Benen is an American political writer and blogger, an MSNBC contributor, and an Emmy award-winning producer for The Rachel Maddow Show. He is very liberal and believes that Republicans quit governing and seized American politics which affects the way he rights about controversial issues. This affects his writing in this article because he makes this topic very politically controversial and he basically states that Republicans are taking away human rights.  CONTEXT This article was published in 2019 after a reporter asked Trump whether woman should be concerned about the future of Roe v. Wade. This is a bias question assuming that all woman should be concerned with that taking away the right to abortion will cause issues. This question influenced this article and was the reason the article was written.  AUDIENCE This source was written with the intent of having woman as the audience and trying to make woman become worried about the right to abortion being taken away. The authors views and his audience create bias and he is using the fear method of propaganda. PERSPECTIVE This article is one sided because it only addresses the fact that taking away the right to abort will cause problems. I disagree with this article because I don’t believe that taking away the right to abort is taking away women’s right and I believe that abortion is killing an innocent life and breaking the bond with the mother and her child.
SIGNIFICANCE The evidence used in this document states that “support for legal abortion stands at its highest level in more than two decades according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, even as numerous states adopt restrictions that challenge the breadth of rights established by the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision” and that the results from the Washington Post/ABC News poll are roughly in line with an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released last month, which also found a growing majority of Americans concluding that abortion should be legal or legal most of the time
Objective:
SUBJECT The main point of this article is to explain that states have ordered abortions to be delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak and explains what several of the states did in response to abortions during Corona. It explains that some states deemed abortion as an unessential surgery while other states claim that it is essential to healthcare.  AUTHOR Katie Reilly is a reporter for TIME magazine in New York City, where she covers national news and education issues. She previously covered general news for Reuters, state politics for the Raleigh News & Observer and social trends for Pew Research Center. She is in favor of abortions and believes that being denied an abortion can lead to financial turmoil. Her views on this topic cause her writing to be somewhat bias, but, regardless, it is still factually based and mostly objective.  CONTEXT This article was written in March 2020 during the beginning of the outbreak of COVID-19 which affected the article because it was new and their were many changes going on during that time, including changes with abortion.  AUDIENCE This source was published for everyone curious about abortions during COVID-19 and how the virus affected abortions. The audience does not affect the reliability of the source because it is simply stating the facts about having an abortion during COVID-19.  PERSPECTIVE This article is objective and the two competing sides on this article include deeming abortion an unnecessary surgery during COVID-19 or deeming it to be necessary because it is a right that people have. I believe that it is a surgery that should never even happen in the first place and I believe that saving the lives of COVID-19 patients is far more important than taking the life of an innocent child.
SIGNIFICANCE Some evidence used to support this claim is that Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost also ordered clinics to stop performing abortions, defining non-essential abortions as “those that can be delayed without undue risk to the current or future health of a patient” and that the leaders of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region have pushed back, calling abortion an “essential, time-sensitive medical procedure.”
3.     What are the similarities and differences between these three accounts of your issue?
The similarities between these articles are that they all address the right to abort whether it is against it, for it or just stating the facts. They also all focus on woman and how abortions affect the mothers of the aborted children. The differences between these articles are that the liberal article stands in favor of aborting children and believes that taking away the right to abort will lead to more abortions, while the conservative article, explains that the unborn don’t deserve to have their life taken and their mothers don’t deserve to loose the bond they have with their child in the woman. The objective article states the facts about what is going on regarding abortions during COVID-19 and explains that states are delaying abortions during this rough time.
4.     Finally, which source do identify with most and why?
I identify with the conservative article because I believe that a woman and her child in the womb have a unbreakable bond that no one should ever be able to break. I believe that aborting a child is taking a life and taking the opportunities away from an innocent human being that does not yet have a voice. I believe that being pro-life not only means that you are fighting for the life of the unborn child but that you are fighting for the mother and the intense bond that she has with the human being flourishing inside of her. I don’t believe that it is fair to rob the child of the opportunities and beauty of life; no one deserves to have their life ended early, not even the unborn.

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
Welcome to FiveThirtyEight’s politics chat. The transcript below has been lightly edited.
sarah (Sarah Frostenson, politics editor): President Trump may still not be out of the woods with his coronavirus diagnosis — he is back at the White House now after three days at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and still receiving treatment — but the vice presidential debate is moving ahead as planned.
There are a number of new precautions in place for the debate, too, given the renewed focus on the coronavirus, including a hotly disputed plexiglass barrier to separate the candidates and no handshakes upon arrival.
We have less of an idea this time around about which topics Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris will debate, but without a doubt the coronavirus will be front and center — in fact, it might be hard for other topics to break through in the 90 minutes they have.
So let’s start there.
We know from our poll with Ipsos before the last presidential debate that the coronavirus is the most important issue to voters here in 2020, and that most voters think Biden is better on the issue.
On COVID-19, almost everyone prefers Biden
Share of people who named each issue as the most important one facing the U.S., and whether they think Trump or Biden would handle that issue better, according to a FiveThirtyEight/Ipsos poll

Respondents who didn’t name a top issue are not shown.
Data comes from polling done by Ipsos for FiveThirtyEight, using Ipsos’s KnowledgePanel, a probability-based online panel that is recruited to be representative of the U.S. population. The poll was conducted Sept. 21-28 among a general population sample of adults, with 3,133 respondents and a margin of error of +/- 1.9 percentage points.
How do you see the conversation around the coronavirus playing out tonight? What will be Harris’s stance? Pence’s? This will be the issue tonight, right?
meredithconroy (Meredith Conroy, political science professor at California State University, San Bernardino, and FiveThirtyEight contributor): Yeah, Sarah, there’s little doubt that coronavirus will be the issue tonight. After months of Trump trying to downplay the virus, Pence will be forced to grapple with it more directly, given the president’s recent diagnosis.
nrakich (Nathaniel Rakich, elections analyst): I would be shocked if the debate doesn’t kick off with the coronavirus and spend a substantial amount of time on it. And I am really curious to see whether the share of Americans who say that the coronavirus is the most important issue to them rises in our Ipsos poll. I haven’t seen the new data yet, but it will be available to you, dear reader, on the live blog tonight!
Specifically, I’m curious to see whether the share of voters who back Trump and prioritize the coronavirus rises. There was a big partisan split on the issue last time, with Democrats far more likely to say it was their top issue.
meredithconroy: That will be interesting to see. I think it’s possible it is still below the economy for Republicans in the poll, though. The administration hasn’t really changed its tune on the severity of the virus, despite the president’s diagnosis, right? In fact, you could argue their messaging is even more reckless?
nrakich: Right — in fact, the president has downplayed the severity of the virus in the last couple days, tweeting “don’t be afraid of Covid” and taking off his mask when he returned to the White House.
sarah: Does Pence lean into that messaging, then?
nrakich: I kind of think he will try to walk it back. Pence is kind of the ticket’s “what the president meant to say was …” ambassador.
meredithconroy: Right. And Pence comes at this from a somewhat different position than Trump — he is charged with leading the White House Coronavirus Task Force. I’m not sure that means he echoes guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or corrects his boss’s recent tweets and messages, though.
In fact, perhaps foreshadowing what to expect, Pence’s spokesperson, Katie Miller, already chided Harris’s camp for asking for more precautions at the debate, saying, “If Sen. Harris wants to use a fortress around herself, have at it.”
nrakich: A more interesting question might be, how hard does Harris attack Trump for this? She has a lot of material to work with (e.g., not wearing a mask, not taking the proper precautions to prevent spread among White House staffers), but will it come off in bad taste?
perry (Perry Bacon Jr., senior writer): Doesn’t seem too hard for Harris to say, “I wish the president good health,” but then harp on his failures in dealing with the virus.
And I don’t expect Pence to walk back a ton of what Trump has said or done. The kind of non-Trump Republican position on the coronavirus has been: “We can’t shut down the country in fear of this virus, kids need to go to school, our economy can’t be closed,” and I assume Pence will say versions of that throughout the debate. It’s a more polite version of what Trump says, but not necessarily all that different.
meredithconroy: Yeah. I think you’re right, Perry.
nrakich: I don’t know about that, Perry. The polls suggest people are really turned off by Trump’s blasé attitude toward the virus.
I think Pence will want to counter the perception that Trump isn’t taking it seriously — which by definition I think involves telling people to, well, “worry about Covid” (though of course not in those exact words).
meredithconroy: I think it’s possible they’re past that now, Nathaniel, given that Trump is doubling down on downplaying the seriousness of the virus.
sarah: If anything, Pence might want to actively pivot away from conversation on the coronavirus as much as he can, because this is something Trump has consistently gotten poor marks on:
Tumblr media
nrakich: That would kind of be the strategy we saw at the Republican National Convention? Try to change the subject to something like the pre-pandemic roaring economy or democratic socialism. It’s harder to do in a debate, though.
meredithconroy: Yes. I think Harris would want to keep the focus on the coronavirus and those most affected by it. Plus, she’s a good messenger for that. More women than men are facing job losses, and Black communities account for a disproportionate number of deaths.
sarah: But if you’re Pence, maybe pivot to something like talk around an upcoming vaccine, or the upcoming Supreme Court nomination?
meredithconroy: Speaking of messengers … Pence is a great spokesperson for the SCOTUS nomination, as a religious liberty conservative.
perry: A debate with a lot of focus on COVID-19 will be bad for Trump-Pence. So I would assume the moderator, to show balance, will harp on some subject that is designed to make Harris look bad. My assumption is this will be about abolishing/defunding the police. Also, Biden kind of non-answered on abolishing the filibuster and adding seats to the Supreme Court in the last debate, so I would assume that is a subject that Harris will be pushed on, too.
sarah: That’s a good point, Perry. And I can see how a debate around the Supreme Court could possibly back Harris into a corner, too, if Pence is adamant about the GOP’s timeline to confirm Amy Coney Barrett before the election, which might push Harris into saying something about increasing the number of justices on the court.
nrakich: Harris is also on the Senate Judiciary Committee and was a big Brett Kavanaugh opponent. Pence may try to accuse her of obstructing Republican-appointed judges out of hand.
But again, the polls are not on Republicans’ side here. Most Americans think the Senate should wait until after the election to confirm a replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
perry: Only 32 percent of Americans support adding justices to the Supreme Court, compared to 54 percent opposed, in a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll. At the same time, a 6-3 court might strike down Biden’s entire legislative agenda. So I would assume Harris wants to stay vague on that issue, as Biden has.
nrakich: Why do you think they are being coy on that, Perry? I don’t really get it.
Even in a dream Democratic scenario, there won’t be enough votes in the Senate to pack the court anyway. And as Perry said, polling shows most people are opposed to it. So saying “we oppose court packing” seems like the politically expedient answer.
perry: Because I think a 6-3 court will be open to striking down any Democratic legislation even on the flimsiest of grounds, so I think they have to keep the idea open.
nrakich: That’s fair. And I don’t think court packing is high on voters’ radar. I just thought it was a weird unforced error by Biden to dodge the question at the last debate.
perry: The Democrats’ actual position is probably closer to: “A Supreme Court that strikes down Obamacare, Roe v. Wade and the Voting Rights Act with Barrett and Gorsuch in the majority is illegitimate, in our view, and we would take action to address that.” I just don’t know if Harris can say that right now.
sarah: I’m surprised either candidate got in anything substantive in the last debate with all the interruptions. But speaking of debates … even though we’re pretty skeptical that debates move the needle all that much (although we did see a slight uptick for Biden following the first debate), do you think this debate might have more of an effect just given the uncertainty around the last two debates actually happening?
Trump has said he plans to debate next week, but is it possible the debate commission won’t let him because of his diagnosis?
nrakich: I don’t see next week’s debate happening as planned. If Trump insists on going, I don’t think Biden will go.
I do think that makes today’s debate more important than a vice-presidential debate usually is (which is not very important).
Also, I think Trump’s diagnosis has highlighted, erm, shall I say, the fragility of both presidential candidates, which might have voters taking a closer look at their No. 2s.
perry: I am really skeptical the debate commission stops the sitting president from debating. The people in charge of these debates didn’t force his staff to wear masks or stop him from interrupting every 10 seconds in the last debate.
sarah: But at the very least, they’ll make him take a COVID-19 test and if it comes back positive … I think they’d have to stop him, or at least that’s what their guidelines seem to suggest.
perry: I don’t think they have the power to make the sitting president take a COVID-19 test and reveal the results. I might be wrong. But this is a really interesting test of power.
And I think Trump will not back down.
meredithconroy: I don’t want to speculate, but depending on Trump’s health, he may hope they do cancel the debate. We’ll just have to wait and see.
But another reason this debate might be more important than a typical VP debate is simply that more people are paying attention right now, right?
sarah: Or more seriously considering who is in the No. 2 role?
nrakich: Not sure about that, Meredith. The TV ratings for the first debate were down from 2016, just like they were for the conventions. (Insert obligatory caveat about how TV ratings are falling across the board and it’s possible people just switched from watching the debate on TV to streaming it online.)
perry: So focusing on this debate, I actually think this debate matters electorally. Some of these polls have Trump in the low 40s, down by double digits. I assume that means some GOP-leaning voters are undecided right now. So if Pence kind of reminds those people that they really hate the Democrats, even if they aren’t that into Trump, that is helpful for the GOP side.
meredithconroy: Yeah, I think that’s a possibility, Perry. I think a lot of people — maybe more moderate people or the less politically engaged — came away from that first debate saying “Wow that was chaos, and American politics is a mess,” but not necessarily attributing the chaos to the instigator (Trump). If Pence can assuage those feelings, I think people on the fence might, for now, stay on the fence instead of deciding to stay home or vote for Biden.
sarah: Trump’s approval rating has slowly been ticking back up, too, even though his standing in the national polls hasn’t improved …
Tumblr media
How do you take into account Trump’s approval rating when thinking about his standing in the horse race? Is this some of the upside Pence could possibly tap into tonight?
nrakich: We at FiveThirtyEight are skeptical about weighting polls by partisanship, but it’s at least possible there’s a touch of nonresponse bias (i.e., demoralized Republicans don’t want to take polls right now) in the polls immediately following the first debate.
Do you hear that sound? It’s the partisan non-response alarm going off https://t.co/0ENKBW2kov

So a more, er, conventional performance by Pence could correct that.
But I wouldn’t read too much into Trump’s approval rating. We’re less than a month until the election; head-to-head polls have fully come into their predictive power. Plus, it’s not like Trump’s approval rating has improved to 50 percent or even 45 percent. It’s at 43 percent — right around where it’s been for most of his term.
sarah: OK, to wrap. Tonight we see the other half of the ticket. What case does Harris need to make for Biden-Harris? And what case does Pence need to make for Trump-Pence?
perry: Biden is winning. Harris’s job is to do no harm. To me, Pence can’t fully explain away Trump’s handling of COVID-19. So he needs to hammer other issues (the police, the Supreme Court, taxes) where Republicans are stronger.
nrakich: I don’t think voters decide who to vote for based on the bottom half of the ticket. So I think Pence and Harris need to successfully argue that their running mates are the best choice for the country.
But voters already know Trump and Biden so well — very, very few have no opinion of them in polls — that I’m not sure the candidates can say anything to change their minds. Honestly, maybe what Pence needs to do is create some highly newsworthy moment that distracts from what is frankly a terrible news cycle right now for Trump.
meredithconroy: Ha! Interesting theory, Nathaniel. But has Pence ever driven the news cycle?
I anticipate that Pence will use the debate to tie Harris to the “far/radical left,” like Trump attempted to do to Biden in the debate last week. And I am going to risk being very wrong and speculate that Pence also doubles down on Trump’s recent messages around the coronavirus and tries to play down its seriousness.
nrakich: “But has Pence ever driven the news cycle?” –> No.
And that’s the ballgame.
