1. song of the year
silver springs !! you will truly literally never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you (im the woman im the one who will never get away i contain multitudes)
2. album of the year
ijaazat (1987) original soundtrack album. lots of gulzar and burman da. literally felt myself aging into my dad while listening to mera kuch samaan
3. favourite musical artist / group you started listening to this year
leonard cohen !! omg i never got the old white man genre music until i listened to new skin for the old ceremony this year & wow... i get it now.......
4. movie of the year
ohh this is difficult but i will have to say joyland (2022) dir. saim sadiq. ive seen quite a lot of queer cinema in my day but none that reached the absolute brilliance & heartfelt closeness of joyland. vividly remember the setting & surroundings within which i watched every scene. i think it was queer in such a true & gutteral sense of the word. queer as peripheral existence. queer as mosquitoes that die kyunki mohabbat ka anjaam maut hai. queer as fireflies that weren't meant for the city.
it is a film that is laced with empathy. i have never seen such narrative gentleness in the face of overt violence. it's breathtaking & it's absolutely incredible. literally recommend everyone to watch it even more so because of the dearth of south asian films in the queer world cinema canon.
5. tv show of the year
oh man i literally do not watch tv.... T_T ig ill have to say gulzar's mirza ghalib tv series tho because i found almost all episodes on youtube & it was literally so good !!
6. episode of tv or webisode that defined the year for you
once again same answer unfortunately don't watch a whole lot of tv but ig ill tell you about my favourite youtube series of sorts that i binge-watched! not even sure which tv show it is that they have re-uploaded recordings of but i absolutely listened to spivak in debates on postmodernism (1984) on repeat for weeks

Price: [price_with_discount] (as of [price_update_date] - Details) [ad_1] By the time Gulzar made Ijaazat (1987), action-packed potboilers had replaced the genteel romanticism of yore, leaving few takers for a film about lost love and a broken marriage. And yet, three decades later, Ijaazat is a film that has endured. Gulzar's interpretation of a love triangle in Ijaazat - an evocative exploration of the strength and fragility of human relationships - was years ahead of its time. This book examines that interpretation to show how, thematically, the film was possibly Gulzar's most daring. It highlights how his skill as a storyteller - at once romantic and realistic - is exemplified by his complex characters. Contributing to that understanding is how the film's power also derived hugely from its sublime musical score by R.D. Burman. Drawing on Gulzar's recollections of the making of the film, Mira Hashmi''s book embraces the memory of the 'love' that for the poet wasn't always the answer, but a part of the question. Just watched an episode of Off the cuff by Shekhar Gupta with Gulzar. And realized that I’m so fucking disappointed with popular media around me these days. Hindi Cinema, Bengali cinema, movies in general, Tellywood, even books, I barely find something that I like. The only Hindi movie I liked this year was Raazi. Bong cinema is a little better, but not much.
Even books are disappointing. I’m reading old favorites for the nth time. The only new fiction I liked was Dan Brown’s Origin, but I gotta admit that it was way below his usual level, except for the meta.
Sab bakvaas hai aaj kal! Like I’m not asking for Ijaazat (Gulzar’s film) level stuff, but nowadays the movies are really sad. Okay, I accept that we are venturing into newer kind of films, more female oriented films, and thats good. But what about movies which focus on human relationships? Which just....tell a story? Not everything has to be about an issue or social message or trying hard to bring a change or revolution. I’m so tired of this “agenda” genre of films.
I miss movies like Chupke Chupke (1975), Khoobsurat (1980), Ijaazat (1987) or even if we go years later then something like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994). Movies which just tell a story, and tell it reasonably well. Nowadays movies seem to be of two kinds; either “pathbreaking” or “record-breaking”. What about those films which were made only to entertain the audience and engage their hearts? Woh kaha gayi?
This drought in movies has forced me to recede into Tellywood. But lets face it, Tellywood isn’t much better. Jahaan dekho waha AYM ML. The only show where the AYM is normal, is fucking Naagin 3, and Silsila Badalte Rishton ka. Matlab insaan ke paas choice kya hai? Apart from Bepannaah, there is nothing emotionally compelling on TV rn.
I’m so sick of everything! I wish I could develop a taste for kdramas and Western shows, but nahi mujhe toh drama bhi chahiye. Ugh!
P.S. I just re-read the Hunger Games trilogy this weekend so expect a lot of spamming.

The beginning of a new year brings a lot of positivity and hope, and also ushers in the awards season. However, 2021 might be an exception in this regard. The Coronavirus pandemic has led to a lot of change in the status quo of all fields and Bollywood is no exception. With the disease still not in control, the battle against the virus will continue in 2021 as well. And this would mean the awards ceremony, televised to a million viewers globally, might not happen at all.
A source claims, “The major award shows like Filmfare Awards, Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards etc might not take place in 2021. These ceremonies involve celebrities from all walks of lives congregating in huge numbers at a particular venue. In times of social distancing, that won’t be a practical thing to do. And most importantly, there have hardly been any releases in 2020. After March 13, there has been no major release in the post-lockdown period. Only Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari released in this season and a couple of small films are expected in December. That’s it. You can’t hold awards for a handful of films in a year like Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior, Chhapaak, Street Dancer, Panga, Malang, Thappad, Angrezi Medium etc.”
However another source says, “The award shows might still happen as it’s a good source of revenue. These awards also get huge ratings on satellite. Hence, most probably, the award ceremonies will happen but without an audience. The stars would perform at an earlier date and it would be later televised to the TV audience. The award-giving ceremony will happen online. Also, it might be largely restricted to OTT content.” This source adds, “The organizers are also thinking of clubbing 2020 and 2021 ceremony together, in early 2022. What it means, the awards would consider the films released in both 2020 as well as 2021. They will soon take a call on this in a few weeks.”
Interestingly, this won’t be the first time that Filmfare Awards won’t take place. In the late 80s, the Filmfare Awards did not take place in 1986 because of the film industry’s tussle with the government of Maharashtra. The ceremony was hence pushed to next year, on January 28, 1987. Meanwhile, the ceremony did not take place for the next two years, reportedly due to internal issues in the Times Group. Hence, some of the prominent and memorable films that released in 1986 like Karma, Nagina, Aakhree Raasta, Naam, Chameli Ki Shaadi, Ankush, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, New Delhi Times etc and the films which released in 1987 like Mr India, Hukumat, Ijaazat, Jalwa, Mirch Masala etc never won a single Black Lady despite being worthy of winning.
