⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 24/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ Caccuri is classified as one of Calabria's – and Italy's – most beautiful villages.⁣ ⁣ The name of this secluded medieval village derives from the Greek 'Cacumen' meaning 'summit' — quite a fitting name given that Caccuri is perched on the spur of a protruding spot between the Lepre and Lese, two affluents of the River Neto.⁣ ⁣ Narrow cobbled streets, interwoven with steep climbs and descents, await you in Caccuri. But the herculean effort that it takes to make it to the historical centre at the top is really worthwhile—not only for its ancient monuments, but also for the vast views that can be enjoyed of the beautiful, bumpy landscape that is nothing short of amazing.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Catch a bus with 'Autolinee Romano' from Crotone bus station heading for San Giovanni in Fiore or Cosenza. The nearest stop to Caccuri is at the 'bivio' (junction) at the bottom of the hill near the 'Autoto Noce' service station. ⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 02/03/2019.⁣ ⁣ #Throwbackthursday takes us to San Biagio della Cima, situated on the 'Riviera dei Fiori' ('Riviera of Flowers') in the Verbone Valley, just a few kilometres from the sea.⁣ ⁣ The village was part of the Roman district of Albmtimilium, with the toponym being 'Villa Martis' as testified by the discovery of ancient tombs and coins. However, the first documents mentioning San Biagio della Cima only date back to 1260.⁣ ⁣ San Biagio della Cima remained under the dominion of the County of Ventimiglia until 1686, the year in which, together with seven other villages in the area – Bordighera, Borghetto San Nicolò, Camporosso, Sasso di Bordighera, Soldano, Vallebona and Vallecrosia – proclaimed itself an independent republic, thereby establishing 'la Magnifica Comunità degli Otto Luoghi' ('the Magnificent Community of the Eight Places'). This unity then dissolved in 1797 by Napoleon who brought them into the Ligurian Republic.⁣ ⁣ Like other villages in the Western Ligurian valleys, San Biagio della Cima seems to be stuck in a time warp — but that's precisely what I liked about it. The only more modern elements that have been added to this ancient village are evocative paintings and Dutch-inspired wooden shoes filled with plants, all hanging on the stone walls. ⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 30/05/2020.⁣ ⁣ The town of Bra lies among the Roero hills and is well known for its cultural, historical and gastronomical specialities. ⁣ ⁣ Walking through the historic centre of the town, which I'm glad to say is pedestrianised, I was able to admire some masterpieces of Baroque-style architecture such as the rounded façade of the town hall (see photo 2) and the 18th-century church of Santa Chiara (see the last 4 photos) which definitely stands out with its original four-lobed plan and its soft Baroque forms outlined in brick exterior. ⁣ ⁣ In addition to the 18th-century churches of Santa Maria degli Angeli and that of Sant'Antonino – other fine examples of Baroque architecture – it is worth visiting 'la Zizzola' (see photo 4) which has become the symbol of Bra and now hosts a multimedia museum called 'Casa dei Braidesi' ('the House of Braidesi'). ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 20mm | 1/100s | f/5.6 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 16/02/2021.⁣ ⁣ Sizzano is a lovely small town, located about 80km northeast of Turin and around 20km northwest of Novara, surrounded by rice fields with a wide-angle view of the Alps.⁣ ⁣ The nucleus of this broadly bypassed town is the 'Ricetto Medievale', an old fortification first attested in the 12th century as a means to protect the inhabitants from invaders or thieves as well as to preserve an important site such as a church; in the case of Sizzano, it's San Vittore around which the fortification was built.⁣ ⁣ The ancient architecture here is visually appealing: the masonry is formed by streams of pebbles in a herringbone pattern, alternating with horizontal rows of bricks.
