The first time Steve sees Eddie outside of school, the man has a broken glass bottle to his neck, sweat and dirt all over his face, lips trembling, eyes focused, aimed and dangerous.

He's scared for his life, swearing on Dustin's mother that he was a good guy. That he wasn't what Eddie thought he was anymore. That he wouldn't hurt him.

The second time Steve sees Eddie outside of school, the man jumps out from somewhere behind him, snatches Dustin and picks him up, spinning. The little butthead is fighting giggles as he demands to be put down. Eddie refuses to ever let go. That is until he spots Steve standing in the background, awkward and silent. Eddie seems to withdraw, but Steve quickly gives him a reassuring nod. One that was a promise that he was okay with that. Go on. I'm not going to hurt you.

The next time Steve sees Eddie outside of school, the man is curled up on dirty wooden floors, devouring cereal from a half-empty box. His eyes snap from left to right, his constant awareness of his surroundings making Max and Dustin look at Steve, almost expecting. Steve stands still.

Eventually Robin can take it anymore and something inside her breaks - she kneels next to Eddie and wraps an arm around his shoulders. He's hesitant at first, but he eventually leans into the touch, the tension slowly escaping his body with slow, deep exhales led by Robin's calming whispers.

Eddie, much calmer, looks up and only then Steve realises he's been staring. Both Eddie and Robin give him a questioning look. He only tilts his chin and smiles quickly, before his head turns away from the two.

"He's not going to hurt you," Robin whispers with a short sigh as Eddie pops some more cereal into his mouth.

Today, as Steve sees Eddie outside of school, Eddie's in his living room, staring at the ceiling blankly. The amount of painkillers he's on leaves him zoned out and reserved. Almost... Absent. Steve sighs as he puts the damp cloth over Eddie's abdomen, soaking it with rubbing alcohol. Eddie's flinch and wince makes Steve's free hand fly up to the boy's shoulder, squeezing it.

Eddie opens his eyes and looks at Steve, lips trembling, the sight taking Steve back to the night they met.

"I-" He begins, but Eddie cuts him off with a faint smile.

"I know you won't hurt me, Stevie..."
