Imogen and Killian had a lot of computers in their house. They had their "personal" computers (the computers they used while "under cover" that wouldn't show anything out of the ordinary if they were hacked). Then they had their work computer (the ones they used to spy on their targets, and they were so heavily guarded that they were nearly impossible to hack into). Plus a few more that Immy used for her own hacking side quests.

Tonight Immy was using Killian's under cover personal computer for some online shopping. She would've used hers, but it was upstairs charging and she didn't feel like going to get it. This computer was only encrypted with the basic spy protection software. The type of software that was easily penetrated by hackers who knew what they were doing. It hadn't happened yet, but considering the type of shady people they were dealing with, they could get hacked at any time. Imogen just hadn't anticipated that "any time" would be a random Wednesday evening while Killian was making them dinner.

"Woah…" She said, raising her hands from the keyboard when her screen suddenly went black. "Oh fuck, somethings happening…" Killian turned the stove down low so their food wouldn't burn and hurried around the island to look at the screen.

Imogen recognized the coding on the screen but it probably looked like gibberish to most people. But she could see that someone had accessed this computer through the wifi connection and had easily broken through the firewalls (as predicted). She read through the coding, growing more confused by the second. Whoever was on the other side of this wasn't looking for anything.

They kept watching as more code came up and then, after almost a minute, the outline of a rubber duck appeared on the screen followed by the words "Duck… duck… duck…" Imogen was just as confused as ever but Killian was laughing.

"What is this?" She asked, moving to the side when Killian reached over to start typing. He typed out the word "Goose" and hit enter.

"It's Tobias…" He said. "My brother." Immy raised a brow at him. "His nickname is Ducky." They both looked back at the screen to see what else Tobias had to say. The words appeared in Hungarian and Imogen had never been happier to know the language. She hadn't seen Killian interact with his family much besides Ambrose.

Hi. Call mom. Said tonight at dinner it had been too long. Also. Why are you shopping for women's shoes? …….

Killian reached over again and typed "Imogen is shopping", chuckling again.

Oh. Okay. Bye, then.

They waited for a few long moments, both just staring at the screen. Before, finally, more words appeared.

Love you. Miss you.

A few more code sequences followed before the screen went black again. A few seconds later the website that Imogen had been browsing popped up again as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Killian chuckled one last time before returning to their dinner.

"Tobias has never heard of texting?" Imogen asked.

"He's impossible to text," Killian replied, shaking his head. "He hardly ever replies. Hacking into a computer is way easier for him." Imogen nodded. She kept watching Killian as he prepared their food and couldn't help but smile each time a little grin graced his face. He clearly loved and missed his brother, too.

"You should call your mom after dinner," Immy mused after she found the shoes she wanted. Unfortunately, they had to limit calls to their family (or, well, Killian's family since Imogen wasn't calling anyone from hers) and it had been a few weeks since he'd called home. From what Imogen knew about his mother, she was the type who liked to talk to her boys often.

"Oh, no doubt," Killian agreed. "I've been meaning to anyway." He took the food off the stove and Imogen grabbed some plates. Killian took her arm when she passed and she looked up at him. "We can Facetime her, she'd love to see you, too." Immy smiled shyly and nodded. Even if they weren't technically and legally married, it was nice to feel included in family chats. She found it was easier to keep up the act that way.

"I'm bored... lets go out and do something." Imogen to Killian

Killian wasn’t sure if anyone could’ve prepared him for this. Nobody in his family had gone on a mission quite like this. Not only was it rather extended, but he was pretending to be someone’s husband. There was a level of difficultly to this job he was flattered he was trusted with, but he wasn’t sure he could honestly handle.

Part of the whole charade, but also a necessity to getting acclimated with each other, was them moving in nearly two weeks before they were expected to start their field work. There was a pre-planned barbecue at the end of the month they had to be sure they were invited to. Their optics of charming newlyweds were supposed to help. So far, Killian and Imogen had spent the last five days building up a repertoire with one another while also concocting the perfect fake relationship for others. People thought that was light work, but fuck - it wasn’t.

Earlier that day they took some (because he assumed it wasn’t all) photos they would hang around their home. They agreed that was plenty of work for the day. Of course, their little shot ended a little after noon, and it was now only two. If he was the kind of person who took naps, he wouldn’t opted to do that, but he felt like twiddling his thumbs. He needed to go out and buy himself some books.

Killian chewed on his lower lip. “Wanna grab something to eat?” He offered, shooting a pointed look to their empty fridge. Grocery shopping was another thing they needed to do. “Maybe by or at that little mall we keep passing by? And then we can check it out? I know you said no more work, but we could probably get stuff to furnish place more if you’d like…”

Sky wielders AU

Part 1 | Art ... Part 14 / Part 15 / Part 16

Hello, people who somehow made it this far into this random au. Sorry for the impromptu hiatus, but I finally graduated from high school and it's been pretty wild.

Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to get the last 2-3 parts done in a reasonable timeframe, but in the meantime beware spoilers for the Empyrean series and enjoy!

Cliffsbane was buzzing with a constant stream of activity as the Battalion was making repairs and fortifying the place. Killian and Violet were going over the runes for the new wardstone on the edge of a cliff overlooking the academy as a few irids were digging a new cavern the serve as a ward chamber. Violet was fascinated by the way the irids were embracing the new tails and how they really took "you get to decide what tail you have" to heart. They didn't care about what other dragons considered the only options, instead they just shifted to filt their needs. The fintails were the first who thought outside the box, but soon enough driltails joined them. These irids were a broader group, not all of them having the exact same tail. Some had a shovel like end, while others had spikes resembling pickaxes. What united them was their imesurable love for digging. Maybe these irids where the reason there were so many tunnel systems on the Continent, their ancestors sharing a similar passion before leaving everything behind.

Killian: How the first six got the wards to work with such rudimentary runework is beyond me.

Violet: I know right! I told Naolin I could do so much better, but he didn't let me at the time. Now that I'm here though, I can definitely help with some better runes.

Killian: You will have to go back soon, but I suppose you could ask you blue friend to get you back and forth and I could help with the runes here and there.

Violet: Not a bad idea, but I don't want to have my memories erased everytime I leave...

Killian: Why would the be the case?

Violet: To protect the Battalion? I can't imagine you want Navarre knowing where you are and what you're doing.

Killian: Violet... We asked Imogen to erase you memories to protect you. They would've done horrible things to you had you known what we were planning or that you helped. It had nothing to do with our safety, but rather everything to do with yours.

Violet: I can take care of myself.

Killian: I know that and I think everyone else does as well, but no one will say no to an overprotective Xaden Riorson.

Violet just chuckle and brushed her fingers over the swirling patterns they've been mapping out for the wardstone. Once Killian laid eyes on the runes from Aretia and the swirls on Violet's hands, he immediately pulled her aside so they could make their own rune patterns. Naolin looked like a kicked puppy at the prospect of his work being in vain, but Killian promised they could make a wardstone with classic runes as well. While working with Violet, Killian admitted he was fascinated with the winding marks on Liam's and Xaden's hands and even more so by the ones on Violet's. At one point he showed her his barely stained fingers, adorned with vine-like marks. They formed the first time he ever channeled from the earth, just like Violet's. They quickly bonded over it and they both matched each other's unhinged energy when it came to magic.

As the two worked in relative peace the dragons seemed to have finished digging out the chamber. A younger looking feathertail jumped towards them and look positively delighted to nudge them towards the hole. The chamber was round with a slight dip in the middle where the wardstone would go. The hole provided light from above and another opening on the side of the cliff offered a view of the academy. Violet could already imagine the iron flame licking at the roughly carved walls.

Killian: Looks good! Now all we have to do is carve up the runes and we're good to go!

The Battalion was able to dig out a large enough obsidian to serve their purpose, but getting it from the Hearth to Zolya would take a day and multiple dragons and wyverns so they decide to call it a day.

Most fliers and a few riders decided to stay stationed at Zolya so Ari had a far easier time getting everyone across the Continent. Neither Violet nor Xaden were happy at being split up again, but considering they'd just see each other again tomorrow they were far more willing to part ways. As Violet settled in her saddle Liam gave her a salute, promising to take his royal squad duty seriously and take care of the Duke. Neither Xaden nor Owen were impressed at his willingness to put himself in danger, but they didn't comment on it.

Basgiath was still an absolute mess once the crew returned, but at least it looked like Lilith was done with the professors bullshit and started cleaning up the board of traitors. It didn't take long for Violet to get swarmed by cadets or the Senarium, but Dain and Aaric made quick work of both. She was pleased to see the two have grown to be great leaders in her little group. Violet was sure Sloane also appreciated both of them quite a lot, but for entirely different reasons. She hopped the two would be able to convince Sloane to help them in imbuing the stones. (Syphoning is way faster than normal imbuing)

That night Violet decided to spend with her sky wielders. It's been a while since it's been just her and her gremlins. She genuinely missed messing around with them and figuring out the secrets of magic. Just for this night they forgot about the war and on the river banks they return to their roots, to harmless fun and rediscovering magic.

Violet: Ari, you dirty cheater! You can't just shadow travel behind to tag me!

Ari: All is fair out here, dear Maven!

Tag is a bit of an unusual activity in Basgiath, but then again the sky wielders never cared much about fitting into the mold.

Violet was determined to catch the little cheater. She was lightning quick, the magic curling around her and her wielders, but every time she got close Ari would just slip away. She was so close, so close to tagging him, but the shadows started wrapping around him in preparation for another jump. In sheer desperation, forgetting she wasn't Xaden like when she's dreamwalking, Violet reached out her hand, willing the shadows to coil around the sky wielder.

Ari still got away, but the tendrils of shadow were still wrapped around the empty air, dutifully follow Violet's silent orders.

Dallas: What the...?

Kate: ... Ok, two signets I can understand, but three?

Violet: I... I don't think this is a third signet. This is my signet from Tairn, but... I don't understand.

Owen: You're not a lighting wielders, Maven, you're a power wielder!

Tairn: The Shield is right Silver One. Lightning is just the easiest way for your signet to manifest, but not the only way.

Hence, general shenanigans ensue. The sky wielders were up until sunrise while Violet tested out the shadows. She was extatic and the shadows were matching her energy ten fold.

As the first rays of the sun reflected off the river the sky wielders finally realized they'll be late for formation. Violet (despite being sleep deprived) more than eagerly snatched her friends with her new shadows and Ari took them behind one of the statues is the courtyard

Once in formation the silver lining of their uniforms made the Royal Squad stand out against the sea of black. The squad was at the front of fourth wing, under the heavy stare of leadership and Violet could feel her shadows coil in every nook and crevice of the courtyard. She was taking in every whisper and every gesture in the entire formation and she knew her sky wielders could feel the thrum of power pulsing around them through every tendril of darkness. Violet knew that the shadows were nothing like her lightning, whereas one was just the release of raw unfiltered power, the other was action and reaction, like the instinctual flow of sky magic. She guessed her mother caught the occasional flicker of a shadow by the pointed look she sent Violet's way and after formation was over, she found herself and her squad in the general's office.

Lilith: Status report. Go!

Violet: We made good progress in mapping out the ward runes-

Lilith: Let me clarify. Status on Zolya.

Violet: I don't-

Lilith: Do not lie to me, Violet Riorson, the lightning sightings were off the charts.

Owen: 🙄 The Duke helped the Battalion with their foolish plan, the blue devil didn't like it and then we eliminated the enemy. The fliers are currently renovating. How's that for a status report.

Lilith: Raw, but gets the point across. Thank you, cadet McCarthy.

Mira: Right, so, we still need leave to deal with actually raising the wards.

Lilith: Consider it granted, you'll have plenty of time anyway with war games suspended. I assume the Battalion can't fight the dark wielders all on their own in the east, correct?

Violet: Yes, while they hold their own pretty well we would need help once we finally start pushing them north.

Lilith: Noted. I'll talk with Melgren and see that we have a taskforce ready to help by then. How long do you think it'll take?

Violet: Maybe two weeks to raise the wards and see if they're working and another two or three to set up the other wards properly for full coverage.

Lilith: Very well. Also, you might wanna keep your husband better hidden. The shadows were a dead giveaway.

Violet: Hmm? Oh, Xaden isn't here, the shadows were mine!

Lilith: ... Gods help us all... Dismissed.

(Lilith is not paid enough to question her daughter's bullshit, especially when magic is involved)

The next few weeks were filled with painstakingly carving the runes into the three stones that were prepared. They carved up the one in Zolya first, leveling Liam and battalion members that could channel to imbue it while Violet, Killian and the Royal Squad made their way north.

One stone was place in a small Battalion settlement, hidden away into a mesa canyon, and the other stone was at the wyvern nest, Xaden and Liam visited weeks prior. While there, Violet took the opportunity to learn from the carvers there and ended up carving her own runestone from the Barren obsidian Killian gave them way back when they were going to the lsles. (With a few obligatory modifications because she couldn't help herself)

Once setting up the wardstones was done, the crew returned to Zolya just as its stone was fully imbued. Aretian dragons were gathered around the roof opening waiting for the go ahead to fire the wards. Dionadair was towering over the other dragons, iridescent red scales shining in the sunset light. On his left there were Molvic and Teine and on his right there were Deigh, Glane and Aotrom.

Killian: I really hope this will work.

Xaden: We worked too hard for it not to work. I'll fight the Gods myself if it doesn't work!

Liam: Please don't tempt fate like that...

Violet: Yes, it would be really inconvenient to meet Malek after all that effort.

As flames engulfed the wardstone the air started to shift and they could all feel the wards settling into place and expanding outwards. The irids were quick to race the wards north as Tairn ans Sgaeyl picked up their riders. Killian was ready to bolt for his wyvern as well what Dionadair lowered to his level.

Dionadair: Hop on, Ancient One, we have a riot to catch up to!

Closed starter for: Florian @eigenaardigheid Where: their appartement Timeline: flashback, the day Killian moved in

Killian had been eyeing the cornelia street apartments for a while, mainly because Imogen was begging him to live closer to her as well as living closer to work. So eventually he had given in and applied for one, being lucky enough to get one. Having a roommate he didn't know was both exciting and terrifying though, who knows who he could end up living with. But Killian was an easy to get to know person, who usually had his mind set on being best friends with everyone. So surely not a lot could go wrong right?

He was moving his boxes inside of his room, having glanced around for a moment to see if he could catch a glimps of his new roommate. Though he didn't seem to find them yet. So instead of awkwardly waiting they had decided to start unpacking a little bit. Bringing some of his stuff into the kitchen area and opening the cupboards to see where it could all fit. As he turned around he saw a figure, bright smile lining his face. "Oh hey-- you must be my new roommate. I'm Killian!"

"Well, yeah, I'm going! I want to know what the big secret is, too!" Imogen to Killian

Considering Imogen was giving him a look, he threw one back to her with equal incredulousness. Yeah, he was asking, but he was just double checking. It wasn’t like he doubted her or anything. He quite literally assumed she would be joining him, which was why he asked to confirm.

“Sorry, I just went to make sure I should be booking a ticket for you as well right now.” Killian retorted back, forcing an innocent tone. As if he didn’t already pay for his tickets. He has asked at the very last second of booking flights, when the browser was already loading to the confirmation page.

This wasn’t the first time Killian would be taking Imogen back home, but he was way more excited this time around. He was a little nervous over whatever the hell Ambrose could be sharing - he didn’t like how he didn’t already know - but this otherwise felt right. His family had taken to her quite well over Christmas. His mother kept pestering him to bring her back over at the next opportunity. Well, here they were.

“We leave Friday morning.” He mused, making his way toward her. The second she was within arms length, he pressed his lips to her forehead. “We can’t stay longer than weekend, but I booked us tickets to leave late Sunday. Assuming Ambrose isn’t going to give me a heart attack, I’d like to stay as long as possible if that’s alright with you.”

"I'm glad you are enjoying my suffering." Killian whined, shaking his head. "So you do secretly hate me huh? Wow glad to find out now I wish I could run but sadly I have contorted my body in such abnormal ways I doubt I'm able to move for another hour so." he whined, letting his head drop for a moment before looking back up at the screen. He let out an exhausted sigh as he sat down, completely giving up.

"I doubt it is, my body is aching in ways I didn't expect it to ache-- at least not now. Maybe once I hit like-- 70." he whined, laying down on the floor, spreading himself out like a starfish. "That's it I'm done-- I'm on strike. I'm-- I'm revolting against yoga." he sighed. "Hey I sleep just-- okay thank you very much, I get like.. a good... 4 hours at least." he joked. "Oh I think you overestimate the power of white women Imogen, they would listen to it-- because it's yoga. Yoga and crime? We got a hit there."

         imogen snorted as she listened to the other's grumbling, trying her best not to break the pose to laugh at her friend. "you're doing great, killie." she said in answer to the other, moving to watch the screen before mimicking the pose the instructor was showing.

"besides, this is supposed to be good for you." she explained, slowly moving with the instructor on screen as she continued. "something about better sleep and less stress, both of which you could use, by the way." she said, looking up her arm, flexing her hand a couple times at the way too bright light. "and we are definitely not doing to do a podcast on yoga, nobody would listen to that."
