My Thoughts On Imogen
I tried to like Imogen, but after the middle of The Runaway King (Book 2), I just can’t stand her, and the romance with Jaron feels so forced. I loved her bravery going to the pirates’ camp, but then she gets captured in the end of book 2 like some damsel-in-distress, and that “we are not friends” line felt like a cheap setup for love. In The Shadow Throne (Book 3),suddenly all his friends are asking him if he love Imogen and also Jaron’s lovesick while rescuing her (wanting to kiss her during war?!) is out of character for Sage. They’ve barely spent time together—maybe a month total across Books 1-2, with months apart before Book 3. How does Vargan even know she’s important to Jaron? I can even summarize the timeline:
Book 1: 2 weeks, Imogen in Farthenwood playing mute and just helping jaron at times with very less interactions.
Gap after Book 1: few weeks, so not even a month, Jaron is king but he is mostly alone in his gardens, room as he said in book 2 and also he is still getting over what has happenedin book 1 especially the death of his family, so it is obvious he had minimal contact with Imogen.
Book 2:Takes place within 10 days, Imogen is there in pirates camp to help Jaron but they are doing their own things mostly and have only few interactions. Imogen in the pirates is the only time I thought I might like her but in the end she got caught forcing Jaron to reveal himself.
Gap after Book 2: ~2 months, Imogen in Libeth,Jaron is in Castle recovering from injuries but his other friends are there in the castle while later Imogen gets kidnapped.
In Book 3 it is mentioned the events start ~3 weeks later.
In The False Prince, Imogen was a kind servant with potential (her mute act was intriguing) and at the end of Book 1 she was talking about like their is a huge difference between her and Jaron now and mentioned her inability to repay Jaron for releasing her from her debts, which I did not see as love. But in book 2 she stays at the castle despite being free to leave (as told in the ending of Book 1 she can go home whenever she want) and suddenly claims closeness to Jaron in Book 2, despite their distance in Book 1’s ending. The romance lacks buildup—no chemistry, just friendship at best. Jaron’s breakdown over her “death” in Book 3 could’ve been grief (like with Mott), not love, and I think her staying dead would’ve let Jaron grow without forcing a romance and maybe if she had remained dead I could have seen the romance but she was brought back in the end after being absent for like most of the book. Also Jaron’s so young like fifteen at the end of war before epilogue so —an open-ended ending would’ve been better. The later books did not help me in liking the romance either as their was always conflicts between them and Jaron keeping secrets from Imogen is really an issue now? Does not Imogen know Jaron by now (I think Jaron was very reasonable in keeping secrets).
By The Shattered Castle (Book 5)(I did not want to read it because I heard the plot was the wedding but still read it because I like Jaron as a character a lot),Imogen’s contributions (like her speech) felt overhyped as Jaron was literally taking risks and carrying the story on his own mostly, and her plan to make it seem like she was cheating on Jaron was cruel and unlike Jaron’s secretive cunning schemes. Their constant conflict over secrets is tiring, and the resolution feels rushed. I don’t get her as a character or love interest—she’s flat compared to Jaron’s spark(maybe that is because of the story being told from Jaron's pov but still I think the other characters have more personality than Imogen in the series). Also every character in the series had a goal of their own or dreams of their own but what was Imogen's goal or dream?I didn't get it .She felt like a plot device to cause drama mostly at times. Does anyone else find Imogen disappointing or the romance unconvincing?

Imogen: what is the proper way to deal with someone that annoys you?
Tobias: a knife.
Imogen: No!
Roden and Jaron at the same time: two knives?
Imogen: No!
Conner: you guys are savages. The proper way is untraceable poison.
Imogen: you're all insane!

Another meme that I'm hoping no one has already done again:
Mott: If you took a shot for every time you made a bad decision, how drunk would you be? Imogen: A little tipsy Tobias: Drunk Roden: Wasted Jaron: Dead

Just imagine this...
What if Jaron accidentally called Rulon Harlowe Dad, in front of the whole gang.
I would cry...
and they would never let him forget it.
And then I hope Harlowe would adopt him.

Review of Ascendance Series books(Ascendance Trilogy Series by Jennifer Nielsen)
Book 1(The False Prince)
This is the best book of the series and after reading the other books even though the book that I liked mostly after this was book 2 ,this first book is better as a standalone book because book 2 is good but ends with a cliffhanger .Though you can end reading book 2 ignoring the cliffhanger and just end there. After book 2 the series goes downhill.First book remains the most unique book in the series and this made me love Sage/Jaron character especially during the ending. Everything in book 1 is perfect and the backstory makes me emotional and also like Sage/Jaron's comments, they are so entertaining and it is again better reading it knowing the plot-twist because you can see the hints before it happens .Book 2 also makes me like his character more so I do recommend it but not the other three because the plot is a mess in the later books after book 2 .
Book 2(The Runaway King)
This as good as the 1st book to me though the first book remains best in many ways this one is unique as we see Jaron's life as king . He mostly doing things on his own in this book without the involvement of the known characters much from the previous book but since the story is in jaron's pov it works with the plot . People blame him for his recklessness but when I think it Jaron did not have any other option. True he could have asked for help but he does not share that trust with anyone much because the time gap between the 1st and 2nd book is very small, only of few weeks. Anyway this is the book that particularly made in fall in love with Jaron as a character as in the previous book he was acting as Sage. Also the dispute with Roden got settled in this book so I liked it. One thing I did not like is that the book did not have to end on cliffhanger. It could have ended with Jaron being declared and hailed as Ascendant King. I also think Imogen's character was at the peak in this book though in the next books later on she lost that spark for me in this series being reduced to a love-interest . I felt Imogen had a personality and had her own story to tell in this book but got disappointed in how she acted in the ending and how she got kidnapped. Besides that I liked Fink,Harlowe and even Erick in the end . Princess Amarinda at the end looked cool considering how she knew what was going on with Gregor which was a surprise though I wanted to see more of her.
Book 3(The Shadow Throne)
The first book was the best.Liked the second one dealing with politics and pirates and liked how Jaron and Roden became friends in the ending with Jaron gaining the trust of his people in the end. This one was really bad .Bad because war started with the kidnapping of the main love-interest Imogen who always looked like some damsel-in-distress needing saving. What she did in last two books were likable but felt like she right now only existed to be the protagonist's love-interest. Princess Amarinda was much more likable in this than Imogen .Honestly this would have been better if Imogen had remained dead because it would have looked interesting then for Jaron to overcome it but the war ended with no loss seemed too weird. Jaron had already lost his parents so it is good that he did not lose Mott so I am happy about that. Also consideringly his age he should not be thinking about marriage and also not in the middle of war though .If finding love was the key to win the war it was not needed to be romantic love as love can exist in other forms.I do not know but since the series was of three books only that confession felt not at all normal and rushed though. I liked Imogen and Jaron as friends in the previous books and it should have remained like that .On the other hand Jaron's thoughts and monologue about his father was emotional and relatable considering his situation which I liked . His friendship and interactions with Roden were good and showed the development especially when Jaron was encouraging Roden by sharing his past .I also liked the selfish side Jaron showed when he was not wanting to let roden know for some time about his real father being alive because it made sense and was relatable .As for the reckless plans he used well, it is Jaron and I like his personality so we know he will always be reckless but somehow make his plans work though this time he took help from his friends at times which showed development.
Book 4(The Captive Kingdom)
This book is not at all good. I felt the series went downhill after book 2. I would rather end the series where Jaron becomes the Ascendant king at the end of book 2 gaining the trust of people. Book 3 was rushed and the romance felt too undeveloped and sudden like the pace was fine in the first two books but book 3 made me not like the romance because the confession and proposal seemed rushed a lot and book 4 did not help either . I am not into them being betrothed so soon and would have rather had them in relationship at least .Also why Jaron is so out of character when he is with Imogen at times? I mean he has been out of character many times in this book but really a lot with imogen. I cannot imagine Jaron being love-struck simp whenever he is with Imogen since he was not like that in the first two books.
Besides that Jaron's character is always what made me kept on reading the books and I like how in this book we got more glimpses of Jaron's past life with his brother . I always loved whenever Jaron talked of his past in the series and felt so emotional. Maybe a prologue book before the false prince would have been better than continuing the series I think now considering how interesting and emotional it is whenever we hear of Jaron's past.
Darius was not the one I thought he was and honestly I do not get why he would suspect Jaron would do such a thing as committing murder as Darius knew Jaron a lot and considering what we had been told previously of him . It sounds too stupid no . I will just ignore the fact that he ever believed that or acted so meanly like how he did at a time in this book. I am happy Darius is alive as jaron needed a family member with whom he grew up and really wanted this book to show a good sibling relationship which only happened in the last few chapters and yes I did like those moments in the ending between Darius and jaron .They made me more emotional than whatever else happened in this book between other characters. Also I do not like the idea of Darius being adopted especially being Conner's son as it was never mentioned before (it should have been mentioned in the first book itself ) and it felt forced like it was done to let Jaron to keep the throne when it could have been Darius giving up the throne on his own for Jaron in the end without the twist because Jaron has proved himself to be a worthy ruler by now already. The plot twist makes zero sense because Eckbert loved Darius a lot and wanted him to be king . Hence I will ignore the Darius being adopted plot twist as well.
Book 5(The Shattered Castle)
This book has like a cheap soap opera plot centering on marriage issue as a main plot when the series was supposed to be an adventure series . Reading this book makes feel as to why Imogen and Jaron would never work cause seriously after the four books Imogen despite knowing Jaron will argue and be upset with him for keeping a secret which he did for the good of everyone's sake. Also she did not have to do that kiss in front of Jaron with Castor even though they made it seem like it was part of her plan. What was she doing honestly? Cause most of the work in this book was done by Jaron only and he was taking greater risks to save the day .Imogen do not deserve as much credit as everyone is giving her. Also Imogen and Jaron are like distant cousins though very very distant, that fact is used to justify that Imogen is royalty so do not know what to think of it .
The only good part was the treasure hunting part with the scope in this book. Also everyone else from the previous books were absent for most of the part of the book which I did not like either. Did not like the plot twist of Jaron being the cause of Imogen being a servant either like where did that come from . Like the first book previously mentioned Jaron as Sage used to steal not just for himself but for the orphans sake with whom he lived back then.
Still liked those little scenes of Darius and Jaron at the end and their interactions . Also Jaron thinking of his parents scenes always make me emotional so I loved those parts .Jaron and Tobias in the prison was good scene or rather entertaining as well but Roden was absent mostly throughout the book. Since the story began with the trio I expected to see much more of them together .Also Jaron being sassy like usual in the beginning of this book made me laugh though.

Chapters: 5/? Fandom: The Ascendance Series - Jennifer A. In the year following our wedding, Imogen and I found ourselves at odds, our love tested by the weight of crowns and choices. Her brilliance shone in decisions like reorganizing Drylliad’s grain stores or planning a festival to lift spirits, but others—like a risky trade deal or reducing border patrols—faltered, leaving me to mend the fallout. She acted alone, hating to be guided, while I kept secrets, my reckless nature unchanged despite my efforts to explain myself. Arguments grew, sharp and frequent, over her choices and my silence. I covered her mistakes, she challenged my walls, and the space between us widened. Friends like Roden and Mott noticed, their concern heavy, as I wondered if we could keep standing together—or if we were meant to stand apart.

I'm reading book 3 of the ascendance series and I cannot take Jaron seriously. I just finished chapter 10 and like he's in enemy territory and he's all like "wow I really want to kiss Imogen and brush her hair through my fingers." BITCH you need to be worrying about not DYING.
Like maybe it's because I'm ace but I cannot handle one more instance of him going "you need to stay away from me Imogen it's too dangerous" and then the next chapter she's kidnapped and is used against him anyway even though she was sent away. At this point keep her close with guards.
Tobias never gets in these situations I wonder why? Maybe it's because he's at the castle with VIGILS.
Also, I don't think she's died even though she just got shot, it's too early in the book but if she does I might celebrate. Don't get me wrong I actually like her, but I just don't like reading romance. Like I did not think they were going to be romantic at all.
Like I got blindsided when in book 2 Jaron was like "I can't be in love with her I need to marry Amarinda for the good of Carthya." Not that it meant anything since he said she could marry whomever she liked anyways lol.
Also, he's kind of dumb like when he made Roden Captain of the Guard and one of the soldiers was like "you can't expect us to trust him as you do" and in his inner monologue he's like "Yeah lol I kind of did" Like dumbass he literally tried to kill you a few months ago. Sure, he didn't think he could have actually killed you, but THEY don't know that. He was literally working for the enemy. You cannot expect them to just forget that lol. YOUR THE KING.
Also, he keeps going on missions like by himself instead of sending someone else, and the one time he does send someone else to do that (so far) it's a trap. I do not think he will learn any useful lesson in this besides that if he want's something done, he should do it himself. Like no. Maybe don't send some of your most trusted confidants into enemy territory. Like I know it's because he didn't trust anyone else besides Mott to be able to rescue Imogen but still.
