Notes: not quite as Susie-heavy as promised but that’s because I initially didn’t intend to write this specific in-between fic, except as I was prepping for the next one which IS Susie-heavy I felt I needed to set it up more, so here we are. Anyway this one will have Susie POV (chapter 3) as well as Imogene POV finally (chapter 2)…

So I love the tv show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. There are moral issues that I disagree with (the constant swearing and in front of children, nudity, casual attitudes towards prostitution and stripping, cross dressing, one night stands, a character getting an abortion) but I still watch the show and enjoy it. The left controls Hollywood so their biases are obviously going to show up and because they believe the majority of people support them they don’t feel the need to write any counterpoints or write characters that disagree with these views that aren’t strawmen parodies of conservative values.

What I do like about it is it’s positive portrayal of traditional femininity. Midge, Rose, and Imogene love being wives and mothers and take pride in being homemakers. They are smart, educated women but knew that raising children and supporting their husbands was the best thing they could do for their families. They are proud to be feminine and femininity is encouraged. In the world of the show, femininity and elegance is what is expected from women and in turn, the ladies are happy to do their best, no one is bitter over having to wear a dress or curl their hair. Even the extras in the background are dressed as girly and fashionable as Midge. In any other show these women would be the mean girl villains and portrayed as vapid, frivolous idiots who just don’t understand that traditionally feminine pursuits are actually wastes of time but this show celebrates it. Even after the ladies have their careers they still maintain their femininity. Rose and Imogene get jobs that are either associated with women or value traditional roles (Imogene becomes a secretary and Rose becomes a matchmaker). Midge enters a male dominated field but refuses to apologize for being a woman. She doesn’t change her appearance or writings to blend in with men. She refuses to be bullied out of the business by men and demands to be accepted for who she is and the value her point of view brings.

So I don’t understand why a show this dedicated to showing that feminine women are intelligent, ambitious and nuanced human beings would dedicate an episode to vilifying Phyllis Schlafly, another ambitious, feminine woman.

In 3x07 Midge gets an offer to do a radio commercial for a female politician and she’s initially excited about it but then backs out at the last minute after learning that the politician is antisemitic and racist. That would be completely understandable, if Phyllis Schlafly actually was any of those things, but she wasn’t.

I said earlier that the left can’t write conservative characters who aren’t strawmen and that’s exactly what the writers made Phyllis Schlafly. The episode portrayed her as antisemitic because she said “kingmakers in New York” are the ones who actually pick the President but this myth that Schlafly was antisemitic has been debunked for decades. In Schlafly’s own book A Choice, Not an Echo, everyone she describes as being a “kingmaker” like Rockefeller, is Protestant. The episode could’ve easily said that instead of implying she was talking about Jewish people, but then again if they were honest, they’d have to admit their arguments are based on false information and they only hate Phyllis because she’s conservative.

Also the commercial that Phyllis wrote that Midge backs out of has the line “I also believe certain minorities don’t deserve rights” which is beyond stupid. Phyllis never said that. No one has ever said that. No racist talks like that or else everyone would know they are awful people. But of course in Hollywood, all conservatives are stupid and racist. They can’t outsmart Phyllis so they dumb her down.

Midge’s father tells her that when you have a voice you have to be careful what you’re supporting. In that same episode Midge does a commercial that implies women are too stupid to do math, she does another that promotes cocaine as a weight loss drug and another that is implied to be underage porn. So she’s totally ok with the consequences of using her voice to support these commercial but suddenly a conservative female politician who supports family values is the worst thing in the world and something she has to take a stand against even though she loved being a wife and mother and many women in her life are homemakers. Ohhhh but it’s different because Midge is liberal which makes her opinions on womanhood ok and Phyllis is conservative which makes her opinions on womanhood a threat, ok great I got it now.

Midge / Lenny

It has been, to put it mildly, a bit of a day.

As Lenny will tell anyone who will listen, being an icon of free speech is not all it's cracked up to be. It's lawyers' meetings, and jail cells, and research, and more meetings, and more research, and maybe, if he's very lucky, he'll find time to tell a few jokes that don't get him arrested.

Today has been one of those days where everything seems to be more complicated than it needs to be. The Lenny of a couple of years ago (hell, the Lenny of less than a year ago) would have dealt with it by finding the nearest dealer, heading home, and giving himself over to a sweet and terrible numbness sent through his veins. The Lenny of today, however, smokes a few cigarettes (and not even the fun kind) with Alan and Jo-Jo, bitches a bit, and then drags himself to an Upper West Side apartment to serve as a sounding board for Midge as she works through some new material.

He's recently been entrusted with a key to Midge's apartment ("just let yourself in, it's easier and you can avoid Zelda's critiques of your pants"), so he uses it and lets himself in. Midge, in her very Midge way, has been encouraging him to feel more at home in her home, so he hangs up his suit jacket and rolls up his sleeves.

As he turns away from the coat rack, he hears another voice, definitely not Midge, emerging from the den.

"And, bend over!" comes a familiar and all-too-perky female voice. Lenny follows the sound into the other room, where he leans against the doorframe, hand resting over his mouth to hide the fast-forming smirk.

Midge and Imogene stand in the center of the room, in a space they've cleared by pushing furniture to the side. Lenny's attention is mostly focused on the outfit Midge is wearing - one he's never seen: a fitted, blue, striped top and a coordinating pair of little blue shorts, which are on full display, given that she is currently bent nearly in half, like Imogene next to her.

"Just when a man thinks he's seen everything, the world sees fit to surprise him," he quips. He's rewarded with a startled squeak as both women jump and stand up.

"Lenny!" Midge says quickly, patting at the stray hairs escaping her headband. "I didn't think you'd be over until -"

"Meeting ended early," he says, taking a few steps into the room. "And what a good thing, because otherwise I'd have missed ... what would I have missed?"

"Midge missed our last class," Imogene says primly. "So I memorized everything the instructor said, wrote it down, and came over so that Midge wouldn't be behind." She gestures to a little, lilac-colored notebook lying on the floor, filled with scribbles that, at a glance, seem to be a list of exercise movements.

"But now that you're here, I guess she's got better things to do," Imogene finishes. Lenny bites his tongue at the three different responses that immediately pop into his head. He likes Imogene, in her all her weird and terrifying glory, and he'd rather not offend her with a joke that veers too blue for the UWS. Instead, he just steps to the side and waves to her as she exits, Midge at her side.

A moment later, Midge returns, now alone. This time, Lenny doesn't even bother hiding the smirk as he pushes himself off the wall and towards her.

"Don't," she warns him, even as a sheepish smile turns up the corners of her mouth.

"I said nothing! Innocent as the day I was born," he protests.

"Yeah, but you thought it. I can hear the jokes from here," and she's right, of course.

"I am just ... very interested in this whole situation," he says, reaching for her waist. She lets him pull her closer, looping her arms around his neck. "These shorts, for instance," he adds, running his hand down the garment in question in a thoroughly indecent manner before sliding one hand down and beneath the waistband. "I don't think I've ever seen you wear something like this before."

"No one has, outside of class," she admits, working to keep her breathing steady even as his hands continue their lazy exploration.

"And these classes, are they ... for you, or ...?" He lets the question hang in the air, allowing Midge to take it as seriously or not as she chooses. He's known her long enough to know what body talk does sometimes.

"They weren't, at first," she admits, her own hand now on its own lazy path, tangling through his curls. "And maybe, sometimes, I still go back to that place. But mostly ... it's just fun. With Imogene, and the other girls, and focusing on the physical so my brain can have a break. Do not even," she adds without missing a beat, foreseeing his reaction but grinning broadly by now.

"Focusing on the physical, eh? You don't need a class for that," he murmurs in her ear, letting his lips descend to that spot where her neck meets her shoulder. "Or this admittedly adorable outfit, for that matter."

"Oh, don't I?" she says, and there's a challenge in the glint of her eyes that sends a little shock of thrill through Lenny. He takes her hand and begins walking them down the hall to her bedroom.

"Now, I did interrupt your workout, and I'm very sorry," he says as the door closes behind them. "What was that last thing you were supposed to do? Oh, yeah," he says with that damn smirk reaching all the way to his eyes. "Bend over."

It's a tie.

Archie is 100% the best life partner Joel has ever had. They should be together. In fact, Shirley thinks they ARE together and is totally fine with it because she already has grandchildren so at this point, Joel can just be happy with his new husband.

Imogene is wild. She is completely feral. Marching into the Button club, writing the kids' names on the fucking wall for Archie to remember. All chipper as she points out that Midge is being a dick about Susie taking on more clients without even having to tell her she's being a dick. Imogene is the literal best.

I love them both.
