Or rather the whole thing about making art for yourself, I used to get a lot of attention for being good at art from other ppl and I'm not sure how to connect it back to myself again

I'm also contending with the Autism "It needs to be done in this way" and the ADHD "I can't focus for shit"

Also please don't worry if you don't know what to say, I'm just trying to get a variety of opinions to try and untangle my brain

i think a good way to get back into creating *for yourself* whether its to come out of a dry spell or just to get back to creating things that you like, is what i call 'backtracking' (bearing in mind that my particular methods may only work for me! im lucky ive never struggled with focus when it comes to drawing things, but maybe some of these things will help as my main goal when drawing is to entertain myself!)

also before i move on this i think is valuable: you gotta draw things that you aren't gonna post sometimes. it's fun and fulfilling to make art for an audience, and wanting attention is not shameful (ITS HUMAN!) but also we live in panopticon times and i think its good to train your "i am alone doing something for myself and no one has to see it" muscles.

backtracking is a couple different things:

look back to when you were really young. what kinds of drawings were the most fun to do? what did you spend time on or get really into? for me, this was a few things! tracing cartoons, drawing up elaborate scenes of lots of little creatures doing a thing, and designing little characters as paper dolls and making their houses and little furniture and accessories and such to cut out and play with. also getting paint all over my hands (i still paint my whole hand whenever im done doing something with acrylics before i wash up! its stimming)! backtracking here is when you try to take those things and make use of them now. try to find that old joy and use it in a way that makes you happy today, even if it's something small or silly or embarrassing. it can really help you rediscover what parts of art make YOU happy!

if you're regularly drawing and in a slump, backtracking for me is stepping back and doing either more exercises and practising the things you feel like you already know how to draw (ie. studying angles of the face or pulling up imgs of rooms on pinterest to see how normal people arrange furniture etc.), or simplifying your drawings to a level that feels more relaxing and less stressful. (ie. chibis instead of more detailed characters etc.) i find i kind of fall back to chibis when i feel lost, and then sort of rebuild from there. its fun to let my style change as i grow!

ALSO! im telling your autism this for your adhd's sake (this is useful for anyone i think): if there is a part of art that you do not enjoy doing or find boring but you feel it is an important or necessary step in the process? the secret is it isnt! art is made up. if you hate lining, dont do it! if youre a digital artist and get caught up picking a brush every time because you feel like you need the perfect one? switch to mspaint for a bit to get the nerves out. it can be really freeing!

art is for having fun and fulfilling our need to create. the rules are all made up and not real. perfectionism is the little death that something something i forget. yeah

Final Campaign Showcase

It's time! With our campaign concluded, and our energy replenished, let's do a final campaign tally and look at all the amazing contributors that helped make this fundraiser an astounding success. Hold on to your seats, we're going for a ride! For obvious reasons, this is going under the cut 👇 If you're curious about what this is all about, check out our (now concluded) BackerKit campaign here!

First of all, the final numbers: as you know, we raised $9,258 from 170 backers, 309% of our goal for an average of more than $50(!!!) per person. Our most backed tier was "Mandarin Seed" with 41, followed by Lime at 34. (hope you enjoyed all the citrus-y references 🌱)

For the high level tiers, we got 4(!!) Bronze Fujin backers at $250+ and 1 Gold Fujin at $1,000. There are no words to quantify our gratitude for this amount of support. But there's a sponsor wall on which we'll soon showcase our generous patrons' names (or not, as they wish)!

For add-ons, the winner is "Additional Sticker Set" (SO glad you love them as much as we do), followed by the "Shipping on Company Time–AO3 edition" sticker. This was our "target audience"-bait stretch goal, so we're glad to see it worked! FujoBoards are also ever-popular.

And speaking of stickers... let's talk about our sticker sets and the people who made them! We didn't get to shout out our artists quite as often as we wanted to during the campaign (the rapid pace of “all that needs doing” made it hard), so it's time to put names to the art!

Our Brand Sticker Pack mostly features graphics and art like the logo and raccoon) by anonymous collaborators who 💜 their privacy! The stickers themselves were designed by @essential-randomness, and the brilliant "fujin inside" joke was a last-minute stroke of genius by @enigmalea.

For the slogan pack, "Boba-tan's Big Integers" features art by @moksutinn, the "be gay commit code crimes" chibi are by @ikam177, and office lady Boba-tan is by @ymkse–all long-term collaborators! Once again they were assembled by @essential-randomness with help from our community

Next is the amazing "fujin/sickos" parody by Ererifan (as sticker and shirt/tote), and our 88x31 badges by Goblin. And don't forget the anonymous artist for our teasers!

They too had already collaborated with us in previous initiatives! As they say, "the gang is all here".

Even here, a lot of long-term collaborators, some in their first foray with git!

For the art (once again, have you tried moving the browser windows on the site?), we have two amazing artists to thank: @brokemycrown, our FujoGuide KS art director, created the "web" trio pics, while the rest is the work of @ymkse, with us since the very first Boba-tan art!

As you know, more goes into a project than coding and art. Between writing, proof-reading, alt-texting, cat-herding, pep-talking, and "running around getting things done" so many community contributors pitched in! We're still confirming who wants public credit, but here's a few:

@enigmalea, without whom so many of our projects wouldn't exist in their current form, did a bit of everything: from styling, to design, to wording, to typing... not even technical difficulties can keep her down!

VCat, without whom our website wouldn't have shipped in time

@starfieldcanvas, at their first big projects with us, gets the credit of "first volunteer to write a @bobaboard retrospective" (rather than founder @essential-randomness), which alone would be an incredible feat. However, Dove did a lot more, handling all our newsletters through the lead up to the campaign, thus making it possible for the team to make everything that needed happening actually happen. She also helped with design, FujoVerse copy, and even picked up coding (!) and GitHub (!!) to help update things here and there!

@elendraug picked up everything that needed picking up! From the humongous task of adding all our collaborators to @fujowebdev, to writing most of our alt text, to proofreading, to helping with drafts...

@xieliansbignaturals who took care of alt text, proofreading and cheerleading

@tarantasina, who kept the team on track and delighted us all with their Signature High-Spirit Emotional Encouragement™

@thebiballerina, who gave us social media wisdom, help with proofreading and wordsmithing, and other invaluable support

...and then me, @essential-randomness, who has written most of the posts delighting your days, manned an inordinate amount of social accounts, did everything-not-done-by-others, and somehow managed to get a company started on the wings of being a fujoshi–the highest of achievements.

With all of this said, the plan for the future: this campaign took us months to prepare on top of working on our other projects. We're now going to take a deserved couple of weeks to rest, then regroup to discuss next steps and priorities.

Formalizing all this into a company won't always be straightforward, and there will be decisions to make we haven’t even encountered yet. Our first priorities will be finishing FujoGuide Issue 2 and producing + shipping the rewards for this campaign.

Alongside this, we'll start contacting the lawyers you all recommended (seriously, thank you) so we can begin hiring with confidence, and continue the work making @bobaboard's governance independent so we can finally onboard more volunteers and push the project forward.

There's a lot to do (as you can see), and it will take time to realize the full potential of what you've helped us launch. We're incredibly excited to get to work, even more so now that we have some seed (money) to help lighten the load. And with this, we say (a temporary) goodbye.

Q & A for Volunteers

Do we need to submit a portfolio of our work to sign up?

Nope, since this is a volunteer event we won’t be restricting anyone from participating based on their skill level

Is there a word count/ level of detail required for completing each prompt?

The minimum requirement for writers is to write at least a 100 words for your prompts, while for artists the minimum requirement is for you to submit a sketch for your prompt (this can also be chibi styled).

Can we work on more than one prompt?

Yes if you have the time and energy to contribute more to the event you can. However we ask that you must complete your current prompt before another prompt is assigned to you.

How will we be contacted about participating?

I will be emailing everyone who signed up to volunteer, so please check your inbox during this time.

Something came up and I’m not able to complete my prompt, what do I do?

If that happens, please let us know as soon as possible so we can reassign your prompt to another volunteer

Can I change the prompt I get?

Yes however please keep in mind that it might take some time to find another prompt for you to fill. So to prevent too many requests to change prompts, we ask that when you fill out the Volunteer Form to be clear on what you are comfortable creating.

If I sign up do I have to post the work under my personal account?

No, you can send your work privately to the donator, or you can ask us to post your work anonymously

Is there a deadline for when we should complete our prompts?

Yes, the predicted deadline for all the prompts to be completed will be sometime in August. (2 Months post the end of the Donation Period-however, this might be subject to change depending on the number of donations received)

I will be sending out a checking in email to our volunteers about every two weeks to see how they are progressing and to make sure we are on track. However, if a volunteer ignores these check-in emails two times in a row and refuses to communicate with us, we will have to reassign their prompt to another volunteer. left and right! i always have a hell of a time making things symmetrical, so my default (like most artists tbh) is to make them face one way or the other.

🙊: share your latest silly doodle with no context

🐻: your go-to things to draw when you need comfort? 

honestly varies depending on the day/mood/current fandom fixation. for now i'll say it's either chibi narry doodles or gaster, but that's something that will proooobably change if/when we shift gears.

✏️: do you prefer traditional art or digital to relax?   

i really enjoy traditional art (specifically watercolor). but! digital art is more easily accessible + i can explore a bunch of ideas all at once and maybe on the same canvas. so i guess for now i'll say digital, even tho watercolor will always be a soothing process ;;

🌈: do you use more warm or cold colors? (the emoji is different but this is the closest i could get!)

no surprises here, but warm! i tend to really like warm colors bc it lends itself to lighting better, but i've been meaning to experiment for a while once i get the chance. one day i'll conquer other color schemes... one day.

OKAY, FINALLY, THE MOMENT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!! Welcome, my Grills, Dills, and Nonbinary Eels, to my pride art event!

This is how its all gonna go down! Im going to be doing a pride drawing, of my Oc Ameryllis. Due to some of you wanting to help out in some way, I'll be accepting your OWN drawings of him.

This will go up untill the 18th, which gives you all about a week to submit them.

All references I have of Ameryllis will be posted below, along with text descriptions because my handwriting is shit lmao. You do NOT have to participate if you dont want to.

Also, drawing your own ocs with him is welcome! I dont care what your drawings are, as long as they involve my fruity child. Feel free to ask any questions if needed!!! Also, buckle up, this is a long post. Alrighty *cracks fingers one at a time* Here we go!

A small description of Ameryllis to help get into his character: He was orginally my dolortale metta. Hes long since became his own character(though i may still use him as his orginal role), and i have unfortunately lost his metta design.

Anywho, Ameryllis represents the stage of acceptance in the stages of grief, hence the flowers hes named after. He has a GREAT love for theater, and uses this to help the undergound cope. He might seem stuck up and arrogant at glance, but this isnt the case. Though its incredibly hard to crack open his shell and see the real him. At first, hes a little cold, and hardly ever smiles, this making him hard to read as his emotions are very subtle, though his smug and dramatic demeanor shines through anyhow. Once you get to know him better, you'll find him showing that ever so slight smile more often, and youll see that hes really a total sweetheart, even if he has trouble showing it.( TSUNDERE). Even so hes very much a bitch, one that takes pride in how he dresses, and knows how to appreciate himself. ENOUGH OF THAT, BACK TO THE REFFS!!!!

And if you still need art for the countdown, what's the deadline for those pieces? And do you have any requirements for the quality aka full illustrations or can it just be some cute chibis?

Urusei Yatsura Art Book Review!

Before I get into the review, I want to gush about how much I adore this book, the series as a whole, and its characters! I started watching the 2022 anime, after seeing a clip of it. The art style is so cute and very colorful!

Prepare for a long read!

I've been keeping up with this series a lot lately, I recommend it if you like slice-of-life mixed with some silliness (and great animation)! Recently, I started watching the original series, which is just as amazing as this one- there's also things that weren't shown (yet?) in the 2022 version of the series. I would like to read the original manga soon, too!

Time for the book review! Please note that I'm not showing things in any particular order, and that I'm mainly going to be talking about how cool stuff is lol. I got the book from Ebay (that's what I use the most), and it arrived safe and sound a few weeks later.

The cover art is really cute, especially with the two chibis on the bottom left! I really love how they went about shading Lum's hair in this iteration of the character. I don't have any translations for anything in this book, unfortunately, but we can still appreciate the art!

Upon opening the book, there is a poster that unfolds- above is the front:

And here is the back! The art on both sides is really charming, and the backgrounds are absolutely stunning, especially in that front image. There's just something about it that I really like, from Ataru and Lum's interaction, and the lighting: it works together so well!

On the flipside, all of the characters running is really fun to look at- each character is running (or flying) in a different way, it's subtle, but it shows a small piece of their personality, in a sense.

This is the page before the character design section of the book, which is absolutely stunning: The artists use a lot of patterns and shapes, and I'm all here for it!

Here are some snippets from the character design portion:

One thing I really enjoy about character design is the expressions, and the various outfits the characters are drawn in. Each character has their own unique sense of fashion! I like Ataru's clothing choice, it's stuff that I could see myself wearing- comfy long sleeved tops and simple, cute button downs!

The expressions are so cutesy and cartoonish, I can't get enough of it! As a character artist myself, these pages are great references on how to go about fleshing out my own characters.

Here is Lum's character sheet, as well as the expression part of Mendo's- his expressions are extra silly so I added them!

This art for the Highlight and Staff Interviews are super cute! Lum's outfit with the suspenders is adorable- and the fact Ataru's outfit is coordinated makes it all the more cute!

The visuals for the opening and endings are stunning- I have to sit and watch them each time, plus the music that accompanies it makes it even better! I need to go back and watch it frame by frame, its a masterpiece~ I can't get over the use of color in this series, it's amazing!!! Take a closer look at the visuals here, it's worth it!

And check out the channel I got these from (UruYatsu Sensei), they've got full episodes of another series by the same creator, Maison Ikkoku, and a few Urusei Yatsura episodes as well. I appreciate them uploading these, because all the other ones were those interpolated 60 FPS nonsense (ugh).

I just wanna say I hope you have happier days with other fandoms and heal from the damage that 19 days fandom have done.

From afar, I could tell that you gave us (fans from the 19 days fandom) several warnings that there was so much toxicness coming from it.

1. The stress you had to deal with some fans uploading your work as in mistaking it with the original 19 days and how you had to reach out to make the necessary corrections multiple times

2. The fans who took advantage of your kindness and spread false rumors about you

I personally wasn’t surprise that you left or taking a “break” from 19 days-honestly I kinda am too with the pace of the story atm since you had deactivated ur ig account multiple times and yet fans of that fandom still didn’t treat you well. I want to apologize for the way this fandom treated you and how we didn’t show you the support that you needed as an artist and whether you come back to it or not. I just hope you can heal from the damaged that this fandom has done-I’ve noticed that you even took down a few artworks that you did like the chibi styles. But again wishing you better and happier fandoms with better fans💕💕💕

But yes, I took down my 19 Days arts on Instagram because some people were very rude in my MDZS posts, saying stuff like I abandoned 19 Days for an inferior series and such. That was Instagram specific (I don’t know why haha) so I nuked my Insta.

Hehe. There were negative things but all I can to do is to move on. There are more lovely people and I don’t wanna miss out on the real friendships. 🙏

I am still connected with lovely people who still stayed with me and I have fun conversing and playing games with friends!!! 😂 Fun!! No thoughts, just enjoying hehe.

I also got to know new people in MDZS fandom and got to collaborate in events and books (upcoming) 🥹 which is also fun!!

I hope you are also enjoying your stay in fandom, even if sometimes media can get frustrating! Especially long running series. I think that’s definitely valid and normal and sometimes it feels comforting if you have someone else who feels the same way. Bighit is such a bitter environment tbh and by bighit I mean both the company and the members. Beyond the constant sabotage the way they try to limit jimin to this 'he's only cute' narrative as if to control even the way he's viewed and not recognize his talents. Yet out of all members he's continuously proven to be one of the most artistically driven and showed with his solo debut that his talents cover so much from dancing/performing to making music. The fact that he's also very smart and athletic is often ignored bc they're intent on trying to not acknowledge any of the things he excels at. It's also just getting lame now because at some point even this idea won't stick like trying to limit a 28 years old adult to just cuteness is lame. And not saying he isn't cute but still trying to make it seem like that's all he is in 2024 is ridiculous and it will be even more as time passes so they need to wrap up this nonsense.

That’s literally it. And it’s crazy because there’s been a point where people have reduced every member down to one singular overplayed trait but they consistently got on anybody who did that because they could recognize how annoying and sometimes demeaning it was.

Like joon with him being clumsy, jin being known as the “mom.” etc. And yes jimin being referred to as cute is not a negative, but people do that in effort dilute how smart/talented he is because they do not take him seriously as an artist. Even looking at armys responses now to getting called out it’s just “free yoongi.” and “y’all are over reacting”. There was a time where some yoongi stans hated that he was just known as the “savage” member because they knew that that wasn’t all he was and had more to offer than just writing diss tracks, yet we can’t get mad at people constantly writing jimin off as a human chibi despite his depth of skill?

Why are we the ones being looked at as dramatic cause we’re the only people who want to acknowledge how strange it is that jimin’s the only member who’s denied the space to be multi faceted?
